More on the history of the DIRTY DANCING 2 story!
Well, Harry here. Doing a follow up on Father Geek's "DIRTY DANCING 2 at New Line" story. Here's a bit of background on the history of this project (or notable lack thereof). As for all you Talk Backers laying waste to the concept of a sequel to DIRTY DANCING... I just want to say, "SUCK THIS!" I love DIRTY DANCING. I must have watched that damn film (along with FERRIS BUELLER and RED DAWN) about 200 times in my teenage years and had a GIGANTIC Jennifer Grey crush. What happened years later with her and Swayze. Did they try to go to Broadway? Were their dreams crushed, or did they triumph again? Perhaps they opened a dance school? Perhaps they became overbearing parents forcing their children to listen to 'glory stories' about when they were young, before their knees went and they became arthritic ol geezers embittered by their loss of youth? I don't know... BUT I MUST KNOW!!! Bring em back! Bring em back! Now the concept of bringing in Natalie Portman to play a 'Dirty Dancing Debutante part 2'. Well... Natalie is the exact same sort of adolescent wet dream girl that Jennifer Grey was... THOUGH... NOONE WILL REPLACE JENNIFER GREY AND OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN! NOBODY! However, for a new generation (God, I'm nearing 30) I guess this would be cool. But spandex and french cut panties would probably be needed to start the callous hearts of today's horny youths.
Harry, I was over at "Artisian" who owns the rights
to "Dirty Dancing" and witnessed 2 attempts to get DD2 off the ground. I
still have my "Budgets" for the stupid project!
Artisian spent at least a couple of million dollars on a sequel, they had a
script, and set up production offices, and at one point even had "Swayze"
in the sequel. It fell apart like a cheap suit last year. It was the second
attempt with Herbert Ross producing, and writing.
This franchise is done ... "put a fork in it".
If New Line wants it, then they are going to have a lot of development
costs to repay to Artisian ,
and that is alot of fat for such a questionable franchise. I could be
wrong, but with Warner taking so many loses this year, I can't see them
giving New Line the "green light" for this one.
Thanks for a great web site, you can call me ......

I never watch Dirty Dancing so I can't saw if I like the idea or not. Gerenally I hate the idea of non-planned sequals. The only good part twos are planned. The Star Wars stuff. GOdfather and so on. I hate the Idea of Franchise so just live with the lasting images left be the movie.

Harry,
I would like to offer my condolences for the collapse on such an ambitous venture as the DD2 project. After my posting on this subject yesterday I was still too excited to sleep so I got out my rubber Jennifer Grey doll with the hyper extended schnoz and reenacted some of my favorite scenes such as the shimmy on the bridge and the flying eagle lift at the recital finale. Ahh... the memories.
But again, if they were to make a sequel would it be the same without the Jennifer Grey Nose!
I am also shocked to hear Swayze would deny his fans of reprising his role as the dance teacher. I understand he has so many other fine films he must dedicate his time to but honestly Patrick, if you are reading this, think of the fans.
Maybe they could consolidate the budgets of both Ferris Bueller's Day Off 2 and DD2 to one film where Jennifer Grey marries Patrick Swayze. Her brother, Ferris, Could be babysitting their kid and teach him the wily ways of cutting class. There could be a big parade at the end where Ferris and the kid could sing a duet of "I had the time of my life..." while Swayze and Grey could do a dance symbolizing their reconciliation of some petty sub-plot with the childs principal!
I'm telling ya' this would be great! Then again on second thought it would suck. Just like all those brainiac ideas to reprise classic 80's films as sequels. Thanks for the memories!

You're damn right about that, Johnny! Sometimes Harry's excitement is catchy, I swear. Another sequel idea I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole because you can't improve on perfection (Godfather 2 and Toy Story 2 excluded as one in a million hits against one million or so misses), BUT...the thought that the geek king known as Harry is a Dirty Dancing freak is so comforting and makes me feel a bit closer to the fellow. I also think my roommate and I could take him on in a challenge to say EVERY LINE of the movie (plus do a few facial expressions and moves) in "real time." I own one of the two (that I know of) versions of the 10-year Anniversary package that I found at a Cub Foods for 10.99 that replaced my old illegal copy made from a friend's tape. I think we're wearing the cassette out. I also have both soundtracks and know every word to "She's Like the Wind" and when I was younger made up my own interpretive dance. Oh dear, I'm a dork, aren't I? Well, at least I'm in good company.***P.S. Jennifer looks better with the old nose, why did she change it? Sorry to hear her show got cancelled, even though I found it unwatchable save for her.
-
I found Jennifer Grey's TV series unwatchable *because* of her. Well, because I tuned in to see her and instead saw some flat-faced unrecognizable lady who let Hollywood get to her. Sigh. All my guy friends agree that they would rather get MaryAnn than Ginger...Baily over Jennifer. Any time. I wish I knew what made Ms. Grey think that the schnoz-job was worth it. As to Harry's post full of excitement over whether or not the couple ever made it as a dance team and got to Broadway, all I can say is this: "Staying Alive". It actually was an enjoyable bit of movie in it's own way, but fell WAY short of Saturday Night Live and certainly doesn't need to be re-done for the millenium! And as to Harry's other plot about if they had kids and what happened to them...well, if you read my TB to the 1st post you'll know that such a plot for a sequel is my worst nightmare come true. No, Harry: DD should stand alone. Period. I love story continuations in many ways. My favorite authors include David Eddings and Anne McCaffrey, and fans of Fantasy/SF know how many sequels THOSE two write! But some stories just don't need to go on, and this is one of them.

i loved the first eddie and the cruisers....thought it was a great film....and i always wanted to know what happened to eddie after i saw the first film.....and when i saw the second film i wish i hadn't known cause my mind came up with better solutions than the one provided for me in that travesty of a sequel...so i think in all....if there was a dirty dancing 2 to ever happen....it would smear the memory of the first film and not leave it as wonderous as it remains in your mind.

Sorry about the false start--first timer here. In general, I love the site and I love your comments in particular, Harry. You don't seem as consumed with venom and you'll give somebody a break if you think they were trying something even vaguely interesting, which is what criticism should really be about. I even understand the Jennifer grey thing, especially in Ferris. But I have two words for you, young man--Staying Alive. Sometimes you don't want to go back to the well. Trust me.

Ok, gang. Here's the ticket: BRAVEHEART II!!! Wallace gets cloned in the present day from the bloody needlepoint from Murron. This sets the stage for a series of wacky setups. Wallace in the mall, Wallace at the club, etc. Finally, he moves into a trendy SoHo apartment with...a sass talkin' gay roomate played by Chris Tucker. Things don't get easier. In one scene, a gang of kids throw latte in his face, saying "Nice dress, girly man!" Dejected, Wallace wonders what to do. Then, later in the film, he travels to Colonial Williamsburg, where he discovers...THE ENGLISH! He begins hacking away at the redcoats with feverish glee. The film ends with Wallace covered in viscera standing on a pile of dead second-rate actors brandishing his sword. Walter Matthau, as the head of the theme park, shrugs his shoulders and looks at the camera saying, "The Mrs. will NEVER believe this!" Iris out, THE END. I'm seeing MEGATON bucks here, folks. Who's in?
-
If Natalie Portman is an adolescent wet dream and you're damn near thirty, doesn't that break some laws?
-
Are they back? YES! Now I can break out my rubber wrist bracelets (in black and neon green), my Jams and my Members Only jacket with the sleeves pushed up. Oh! And I've got to get my three Swatches (for one wrist) out of mothballs! Crank up the Outfield and Haircut 100, gang!!!
-
Harry, totally agree with you on Olivia. As for Jennifer Grey, I think she actually looks more yummy now than during her Dirty Dancing days.
-
Scritti Politti! Good call! I'm going to put on my oversized "Frankie Says" T-shirt and my venetian blinds sunglasses and go see a double feature of "Last American Virgin" and "Hot Resort"!!!
-
Hey folks-Now here's what I heard...They were going to do a sequel right off the bat after the first Dirty Dancing but the stars HATED each other, so it was a no go. Think about how good it could have been say if it had come out in 89 when both Jennifer and Patrick were still huge? It hurts.
-
'nuff said.

I grew up in England -- not so many pretty boy hair bands more great stuff like Madness, Bad Manners, The Police, Blondie, Queen, etc. -- but you guys had it pretty good. Prince's brilliant Sign of the Times, Thomas Dolby's Aliens Ate My Buick (anyone got the MP3?). You guys mention Scritti Politti as if Cupid and Psyche wasn't a great album! You had teen movies like Pretty in Pink, The Pick-Up Artist and Dirty Dancing and adventure movies like Indiana Jones & Close Encounters. Sure there were some embarrassing things about the 80s, but being a teenager was pretty damn fun.
-
Let's not forget Spandau Ballet, Glass Tiger, The Stray Cats, or Dio, gang. Hey...does anyone remember the video for "The Last in Line" by Dio? Where Meeno Peluce (of "Voyagers" fame) ends up in an elevator to Hell, and only he and Ronnie James Dio can free everyone? Classic. Freaks and Geeks, by the way, is a great show. They play a ton of Rush on that show. Neil Peart rules!
-
Can we please, for the love of god, quit this retro crap before we run out of past? I gotta tell you, I'm really not looking forward to the impending 80s revival. I guess we'll be knee deep in assholes in multi-zippered Beat It jackets before long. Tripping over breakdancers and getting handjobs from girls with really big hair, wide belts, and lace gloves. Actually, come to think of it ....
-
First off, if you really need a "sequel" to an '80s film, go rent GROSSE POINTE BLANK, which nails what became of my generation better than any Breakfast Club or Ferris Bueller 2 ever could. It's been done, let's move on. Of course, DIRTY DANCING wasn't set in the '80s. Maybe we could have Grey and Swayze holding some kind of dance-a-thon to keep the Catskills from being turned into another Wal-Mart strip mall. She's trapped in a loveless marriage, of course, having left him after he developed a heroin problem when they tried to make it on Broadway. And let's get a Little Richard cameo in there before the guy dies. We must maximize the use of this national treasure while we still can!
-
Eddie and the Cruisers I was a very good film, but the sequel was at least as good, if not better! First of all, Eddie II's soundtrack is 10 times better. And in my opinion, the first movie was generally more stale and boring. Basically the two movies had a completely different feel- the first being more like a documentary. So if you want a great rock n roll documentary, see the first one, if you want a great movie with a killer soundtrack, Eddie II is the way to go.
