CAPTAIN AMERICA Throws His Shield!!

Merrick here...

Seems a full-length trailer for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER will premiere on Entertainment Tonight tonight.

THIS piece at SuperHeroHype notes that ET's teaser for said trailer has gone online via YouTube, offering our first glimpse at Cap throwing his shield (no, that's not a euphemism).

I believe a few other shots in this preview may be fresh as well, although I've yet to compare it to the Super Bowl spot we saw a while back.

Utilize the "Show Finder" function at the bottom of THIS page to find where/when/if Entertainment Tonight broadcasts in your area.

    Fingers crossed on this one...

by the dolphins are in the jacuzzi

Action looks amazing, Cap's costume is near-perfect, and that photo a few weeks back of the Red Skull sent shivers. The only thing I'm worried about is the element of camp humor that raised its head in the Super Bowl trailer ("The shield works," or something like that). Hopefully, the humor will only be occasional, as in Iron Man, and this movie will be another Marvel classic. Man, I'm looking forward to this.

  • March 22, 2011, 11:38 a.m. CST

Thanks but I'll wait until the trailer they are referencing

    by jim

comes out on its own. I have no desire to watch snippets of said trailer with ET's lame voiceovers and self-promotion: "we're great because we are giving you this. Look at this as we tell you how great we are. Doesn't this movie look great? You know what else is great? Us. We are great. ET is great because we are so great. We could go on and on about how great we are but the section of the trailer we had to show you is done now so you'll just have to take our word for it how great we are."

Forget about the set designs (if you can). The acting is what really looks bad. I mean, Chris Hemsworth delivers his lines like Keanu Reeves on Prozac. I've seen less lifeless eyes in mo-cap.

I remember on rottentomatoes they said that they were already looking into making a sequel (to Captain America) despite the movie obviously not out yet. They implied that the "suits" liked what they have seen thus far, but that this doesn't bode well for Thor which they're not looking into making into a sequel yet also hasn't come out yet, implying that the same suits don't have as much faith in what they've seen of Thor. That goes to show how $ driven hollywood is, nothing new. Personally I hope both do well but if not we have a nice home library of movies here.

    Any Captain America fans

    by cushing1967

Know the name of the miniseries from about 18 - 20 years ago that was a retelling of his origins and ended up in a giant gladiatorial arena with a fight between Captain America and the Red Skull - I think that half the arena was made up of allied POW's (or even people from Concentration camps) and they were forced to watch what the Nazi's thought would be the defeat of 'hope' That is literally all I remember about it so thought I'd ask if anyone knew what this was. I do remember really liking it. Thanks in advance

  • March 22, 2011, 12:07 p.m. CST

    Oh yeah

    by cushing1967

If this film has a WWII pulp vibe and it seems to do then I'll be as happy as a pig in shit.

  • That's because they know they have a stinker. Joe Johnston has never made anything EPIC, and he's not about to start now. And please, don't sound surprised once this gets 21% on Rotten Tomatoes.

aka Steroids. Captain America looks like a walking advertisement for them. After all, no way Chris Evans got that bulked up that quickly without them. Steroids are pretty much the go-to solution for most actors looking to bulk up for roles. Arnold, Sly, Christain Bale, Hugh Jackman, all trailblazers.

    Not sure why

    by ThurstonOne

There are all these conspiracy theories about the lack of trailer and it being a failure and all that. I suppose with a few reshoots going on, that can fuel the fire, but considering its later release date maybe *gasp* they've been focusing more of their marketing efforts on Thor so people actually bother to go see that one.

  • Now that Thor is a month away from premiering, there's less worry that really starting the ball rolling on Captain America will cause people to look past Thor altogether. Plus, there was the backlash that Green Lantern received for its first trailer and the shaky SFX in it. I'm sure no executive wants to hurry up and put an early trailer in front of the bloodthirsty mob that are geek fans these days. So no, I don't really find it suspicious that they haven't had a full trailer yet. The movie isn't out for another 4 months. "Harry Potter/Hallows pt. 2" just put out their first full trailer, and that one comes out the week before Cap.

    by Lemure_v2

And feel free to comment, Batman swore to uphold justice and fight crime, so he spent years training himself mentally and physically. Captain America just took drugs...?

  • ...for international purposes as there is hostile sentiment towards America abroad. (Somewhat thanks to the Bush administration.LOL) And to have a film titled Captain America in say..Europe or otherwise may "offend" certain foreign countries. Ergo it's more likely to be released internationally as "The First Avenger". That's just my 5 cents.

    Worried about Thor..

    by jack Bauer

I worry that its going to be 'hammy' and I also worry that its going to be too much of a chic flick / love interest thing. Branagh is a true Thespian at heart, he's a lovey who likes to explore characters so Thor will have to as seen have a love interest and you know he's going to have to save her while saving the day. Sorry but that's going to make me puke, same as the Transformers constant use of Megan Fox, sorry but she's an awful actress just stuck there for eye candy. Thankfully she was ditched this time around, shame they didn't recast Sam's role as I'm fed up with wooden Shia. Bring on Cap tho, looking strong at the mo...

Our current Prez on the other hand is a gifted speaker, but is in way over his head. So sure, Bush made some of the world think we were bullies, but Obama is making the entire world think we're a rosy-cheeked sissy-boy that likes to bow and kiss hands. Give me a friggin' break.

    Cap vs Batman

    by 80826

Yeah, he got the serum (which, incidentally, was filtered out of his system in the 90's), but the cool thing about Cap was he didn't have his parents killed or any dramatic story leading him to a vengeance quest. He simply saw something wrong in the world and wanted to help, even though he was scrawny. He was a pacifist, but thought what the Nazi's were doing was so atrocious, that he had to do something. I really hope they keep the scenes where he was constatly rejected by the army, but kept showing up to enlist day after day.

lemure_v2: Bats is one of the few self-made heroes.

    by Chewtoy

...So that's a high standard to hold other characters to, and even then it really, really, really helps that his parents left him billions. Cap so wanted to serve his country despite being sickly that he voluntarily underwent an experimental procedure to make him the ultimate human specimen... and really, that's the only difference between him and Batman in regards to being self-made. Batman had the genetics already to allow him to hone himself into top physical shape, Captain America didn't. Experience and training-wise, though, they both worked at those like motherfuckers to be the best. There are only a handful of hero characters who weren't born with some advantage, be it wealth, strength, massive intellect, etc, or had some abilities randomly thrust upon them from a spider-bite, or gamma radiation, or alien technology.

    by Astronut

... the scene where Cap leads everyone busting into that place! They changed the coloration of the entire background "sky" behind them. Before, it was orange/pink and fake looking. Now it is a more realistic dark blue. I had a dislike for this scene because of that awful CG looking sky but now it's fixed! Cool

    by toby

Cap's world was in a time of war and they were getting their asses kicked, so the allies probably didn't have the luxury of time to let their soldiers to go on soul searching, vision quests. It's easy to think Steve Rogers took the easy way out with drugs, but volunteering for experimental drug programs where you are the guinea pig and you're betting your life with no guarantees of what the outcome will be takes guts. In other circumstances I would agree, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

    by HarryKnowlesNonExistentInceptionReview

...Steve Rogers hated the Nazis and wanted to serve his country so he enlisted, but was rejected as a 4F due to his sickliness. However, Dr. Reinstein needed just such a case to test his super soldier serum. Despite the risks involved, Rogers gladly agreed to be the guinea pig and fortunately, the experiment was a success. Steve Rogers was quite heroic from the very start. Now, if you want a case of a drug-using hero, look no further than the original Hourman, who popped a pill once an hour to gain super strength and even, in later retellings, became addicted to his "Miraclo" pills.

Choppah made a good point about "epic."

by the dolphins are in the jacuzzi

The word is overused and abused these days to the point of absurdity. A geek asks a hot chick out, gets turned down, and his friends will no doubt call it an "epic fail." But something truly epic has scope and sweep that sets it apart from the standard. Very few superhero movies would really qualify as "epic." Were Spider-Man 1 & 2 epic movies? No, although 2 tried to be and ended up being merely a bit preachy and self-important in places. Was Iron Man an epic. No. The Hellboy movies? Not really. X-Men 1 & 2? No, although 2 came closer than most. Blade 1 & 2. Badass, but not epic. Maybe the Crow. Maybe. But the only truly unarguably epic superhero moves of the modern age, in my opinion (like 'em or not) are Nolan's Batman movies. Does that mean that the others I listed aren't great movies? Of course not. They're some of my favorite movies of the last few decades. But they're not epics. They come from pulp fiction, and most pulp fiction doesn't really lend itself to epic adaptation. So, Captain America probably won't be epic. But will it be good? The studios have already greenlit a sequel, which is more than can be said for Thor or Green Lantern. Me, I've got no horse in this race. I'm a liberal, so I don't automatically embrace the implied jingoistic patriotic baggage that comes along with Captain America. But I love a good superhero movie, and so far, this one looks like one of the better ones. Epic or not.

    Said it before...

    by Lemure_v2

Captain America should be good, but X-Men First Class will be the best superhero film this year - if Fox can kick some ass in the marketing dept. Most of the characters are already known in cinema and it has the best director/writer/cast combination. Green Lantern is unknown to Joe Public - and will be a tough sell unless the film is exceptional. Thor looks really silly and has an unknown lead. Captain America stands a good chance as it's an interesting character, but it'll struggle overseas if it doesn't pay homage to the allies. The flag waving can be a turn-off too.

  • Admittedly, they're all people close to Marvel so you have to take any opinion they give with a grain of salt... but then many of them are people who don't seem like they'd be under any obligation to praise or even mention the film, like Bendis who said he loved it and has watched it 4 times already.

Also the director or the Rocketeer - a movie that is sheer and utter fun from start to finish. He also won an oscar for his work on Raiders of the Lost Ark. He directed Honey, ISTK, and Jumanji - both decent family films. Blame the studio for JP3, and whoever wrote it - Johnston was just the yes-man. Unless you're talking about the likes of Solondz, Allen, Herzog (and a few others), you can't judge a movie by the director.

..really??? Captain America was born out of Nazi hating 100% US Troop icon-atry....yes i made that word/hyphen up.... While reading the comics you were supposed to believe this hardcore american soldier would bust the living crap out of every single Nazi and nazi-loving hate filled moron mother f-ers in the world. You were supposed to want to stick your sharp ended american flag pole right up Hitler's ass and let his dying farts make the American dream billow in the wind. Saying you're liberal so you don't want to embrace the go-america baggage of this films means you're a fool. I know America has done some pretty stupid things over the years but none of that has to do with the fact that we finally get a movie about a pure American Nazi-fighting soldier. Nothing is good about Hitler other than he's ability to comb his hair before speeches. Putting in slams against republicans or democrats, liberals,, people need to wake up and realize we just saw Capt America throw his shield and have it return to him and catch it, hopefully after tearing the head off of a Nazi SS beotch and we ALL need to embrace that and cheer. On a side note....Thor has so much fake looking CGI crap it looks worse than Charlies Angels Full Throttle.....Green Lantern will end with the shot of Reynolds in the suit flying at the camera in space saying the "darkest night" line.

Both this and Thor look great, you fools

    by kevred

No, they're not perfect. Yes, there are things about each film that all of us would change. No, most of us probably wouldn't agree on what those changes would be. But look at it: you've got two big-budget Marvel movies with top-shelf talent behind and in front of the camera, you've got a period Cap film with the Red Skull, you've got Thor vs. Loki and The Destroyer. No way either of these films nail everything we love about the characters or their stories. But they both look fun, action-packed, and full of cool things we've only seen in the printed pages of comic books up 'til now. Enjoy the ride, already!

    This actually looks shockingly good....

    by Danjak

I'm amazed they had the balls to do a superhero period piece. Good on them. From the clips I'm seeing so far, this looks far, far better than anything else out there on the horizon (I'm looking at you, Thor and Green Lantern). And yeah, Chris Evans is the man. Even after seven viewings, my wife and I still laugh out loud at his delivery in Scott Pilgrim ("that's actually hilarious...").

Oh and as for the director....

    by vicmackey1268

Rocketeer was two hours of awesome annnnd was about the Nazi's loosing and having the Italian-American Mafia use tommy-guns on Hitler lovers....just the scene where the mafia boss says "I love America" makes me smile. Jurassic Park 3 was not written by Michael Crichton one of the best authors ever, and therefore I refuse to watch it again. The director did what he could with it but having the T-rex get his ass handed to him was the most dissapointing scene in any movie for a while. Still, the rocketeer alone makes me wanna see this film and if its half as much fun it's gonna rock.

Ang Lee's HULK movie is by far the best Hulk movie.I can't understand the fascination some have with the latest Hulk movie. While it has some good elements, compared to the Ang Lee's movie is a dispirited souless job. With Ang Lee's movie i felt i saw Hulk in al his tragic glory. With the newer movie, i just saw some banal green monster shit happening. And the least said about the portuguese spoken by Edward Norton in the mvoie (or the otehr so-caled brazilian chjatacters), the better. As spoken portuguese goes, what Edward Norton did was nothing short of hysterical. To say he murdered the language would be too kind. The audiences in Brazil must have rolled in the floor laughing in riot. I know i did.

by vicmackey1268 not going to comment on the "7 viewings" part cuz i barely made it past 1....but Evans and former Superman were the best parts of the movie by far. The line after "I'm a really big fan"...."Why wouldn't you be?"....was 1 of the handfull of times i actually laughed out loud during that movie... I think Chris Evans has his work cut out for least Reynolds did Buried, a horrible waste of 1.5 hours but still a pure acting experience. Evan's had better not do the Human Torch/Losers/Scott P acting...even tho he's hillarious, especially in Not Another Teen Movie, I don't want 2 hours of sarcastism.

And I, for one, am really hoping Marvel can pull off this totally insane idea of cinematic world-building, and have it WORK and actually be of some quality. Who would have thought, just a decade ago, that a company would attempt to make multiple inter-locking films, all with different stars, writers, directors; all of them leading to a titanic team-up of epic proportions? It boggles. My inner geek is giddy.

Avengers will be Epic, these are not supposed to be.

    by Mandolorian

They should be well made, backstory films that introduce the characters before they all join up. Iron Man was a fairly modest film. I think both Cap and Thor look good. But you can't compare the two because they are completely different. It would be like trying to compare Blade Runner with Star Wars.

  • March 22, 2011, 2:57 p.m. CST

There has only been 30 seconds of footage released so far.

    by Chewtoy

Evans had 2 lines in what's been shown. How much did you want him to say?

  • I think the word "epic" is maybe not the proper word and maybe even over used. I would use a word like classy. Both Blade Runner and Star Wars are classy films in their own distinct ways. But they ooze class. Superman The Movie is another classy film IMO. A lot of newer films — Iron Man and yes even TDK, as much as I *LOVE* that film — are not what I would call "classy." Mid grade is what I would call them. Classy has an extra layer of professionalism, an extra level of shine and integrity applied to it. It's what THOR should be. It should be LORD OF THE RINGS CLASSY. And I don't even give a shit about LOTR. But I still admire it and label it as classy.

    lowdevil speaks for all talkbackers

    by Roger Moon

I’m a fan of ‘Iron Man’ movies, but really? ‘Iron Man,’ a whole franchise of movies, ‘Iron Man 4’? Fair enough, but the fact that we don’t have a ‘Superman’ movie in the midst of this is crazy. It would be like if we were making a movie about all the Greek gods, but no one had made a movie about Zeus because they’re like, ‘I don’t know what to do with him, he’s too awesome.’ We’re at this point where all of these minor Gods have movies and franchises, and it just seems to me that it’s time to fix that… I think ‘Superman’ is broken and needs to be fixed, from a movie stand point. He is the biggest superhero on the planet, the father of every superhero. I’m like really ‘Thor’? Like really? It’s like the world is out of balance. It’s like we lost our mind here people, ‘Come on.’ -- lowdevil,

So CAP risks death so that he can travel abroad to risk getting himself shot and/or blown to hell in the name of liberty. Heroic.

  • if you are so deeply into comics, that any Thor adaptation makes you weak in the knees, well I understand that. But my god, the trailer, with all the pop culture references, and jokes flirtatious teenage chicks, and pathetically delivered dialogue, attempts at humor that fall flatter than Kiera Knightley...I just don't get it. I've watched the trailer like 3 times, and each time I cringe even more. even the effects look mediocre. it looks like a movie made in 1995, both in feel, costume design, everything. it's sad. I honestly think a lot of you that are excited for it are going to be hugely let down. take your blinders off, guys. Captain America, on the other hand, even though we haven't seen that much, is looking better by the minute. Evans was a perfect choice, the supporting cast is great, Weaving's character design is fucking PERFECT, the period stuff looks pretty well-staged. I have a feeling only one of these movies is going to be well-reviewed, and I'll give you a hint, it's not the one with a girl taking pictures of a superhero to put on Facebook.

    by kiwicanuck

Cap chucking the shield always seemed a bit of a risky endeavour, something that worked as a dynamic visual but never made much sense. I mean, it's not a boomerang. He mows down a few people with the shield, but leaves himself a helluva lot more vulnerable to whoever's left standing, especially holding a pistol, while he has to run and retrieve that fucker. Oh, and while JJ's resume contains a couple of grade A turkeys in Jurassic Park 3 and The Wolfman (the latter of which was partcuarly crappy on just about every front but make-up), I remain hopeful after all I've seen about this one.

Still not fully convinced on this. Granted, Rogers wants to do his bit against the Nazis and all credit to him for that. But you show me one army recruit after a year who is weak? Enlisting and training gives you the mental and physical muscle. Sure, Bruce Wayne had billions, but he didn't use them during his training, he shunned his background and lived off his own means (depending on which origin story you read). I still want to see the film, it's just an issue I've always had with the Cap.

    Cap vs. Thundar

    by kiwicanuck

As more footage keeps coming, the distance in quality seems to be getting wider and wider between Captain America and Thor. Green Lantern has left the taste of donkey droppings in my mouth from the first frames I've seen, so it's not even in the same race. I'm seriously surprised by how Johnston and co. APPEAR to have nailed the tone, the period, and the pedal to the metal fun, while Thor appears as some cheap, straight-to-DVD flick more worthy of an adaptation of Thundar the Barbarian and his goddamn sun sword.

To all you miserable EFFING haters out there

    by qjinx

I can remember a time in the late 80's when all we really had to go to in terms of comic book movies was the superman franchise and burton's batman. Now, we live in this glorious time where whoever grew up with comic books finally get to see their favorite characters on screen and all you people can do is bitch about it Spider-man - sure organic web shooters and a goofy looking goblin, yes it should have been Gwen, but guess what? pretty faithful to the books otherwise..spider-man 2 was amazing and spider-man 3 was the studios fault...Raimi did an amazing job with the series and should not take flack blade- took alot of liberites but made an otherwise unpopular comic character badass X-men - takes liberties with the order of events and rogues personality among other things but hey, now the main stream public realizes how freaking cool the concept of mutants and their message of equality is sure, I wasn't completely pleased with x3, but the movies is its whole own universe as far as Im concerned Daredevil - yes...some goofy playground fight, yes in my opinion plot holes galore, but it tried to tell the elektra sage despite the studio's demand for the cliff notes version..MSJ movies can be a little goofy but he's obviously a big fan of the material and if it was his choice, would have the made the movie as close to the miller version as possible...again, blame the studio Ghost rider - (see daredevil)...go back and watch that movie with the sound off. looks pretty cool seeing a ghost rider movie on screen if you can eliminate that awful pro wrestling dialogue nolan bat- movies - fucking entertaining movies singers superman - yeah hes a stalker in this story, but many of the actions scenes were fun to another rom com or stupid drama any day of the week this year I will go see THOR--if any of you actually read the comics like I have, you'll appreciate how faithful they are staying to teh modernization telling of the thor story..turn off your automatic hate buttons and allow yourself to see Thor...THOR on the big screen Green Lantern- again, for any of you whove read GL as long as I have know that Ryan Reynolds IS acting very much the way Hal was portrayed before he got his ring..Hal was an irresponsible jerk...he had just gotten a DUI before getting the ring in his modernized origin in the 80's. Teh responsibility of the ring makes him the hero he becomes....Movie looks fun, fuck all you haters X-MEN FC - you know what? Ive always wanted a hellfire club movie. I thought that is what X3 shouldve been..The real phoenix saga. We get em now in FC, a little changed, a little different, but fuck it, we get to see the hellfire club in a movie!!! Yes get to...YOu people that do nothing but bitch must not remember a time when the thought of this was impossible or remember a time of happiness in your lives...Movie looks fun....its x-men for chrissakes! and finally a Captain America movie set in world war two WITH HYDRA..The howling commandos!!! BUCKY! Cosmic Cube!! wha the fuck is wrong with you people?!?!?! everyday its nothing but bitch bitch bitch bitch nag nagnag everyday on this site nothing but bitching! The talk back should be called "I Aint happy about this news!" I work in hollywood, Raleigh studios where many of the new marvel movies are filmed now, and the fact that these movies exist and trying to remain half way faithful to the characters is a GIFT you ungreatful assholes! Go out and allow yourself to have fun watching characters you obviously love, getting to be on the big screen for once. Its just a fucking movie!

Rocketeer had the rocket pack for less than a week and only ever used it to rescue people. It was an origin story so character came before action. Batman is THE most heroic superhero. He devoted his entire life absolutely to fighting crime. He didn't suddenly have powers and decide to use them for good. He exists solely to wage war on crime WHILE never taking a life. He's given up everything else.

    by Danjak

I'm totally digging the style I've seen so far, and am loving the change of pace of a superhero flick set in the 40s. We all know, however, that at the end of the movie, Cap's got to be frozen so that he can show up in the Avengers. Well, I hope they're smart about this and don't just jump to modern day. I'd like to see the origin story, then a "one year later" line, followed by his ass-kicking conclusion to Red Skull's plans. That "one year later" provides ample room for a few sequels for Cap's later exploits still set in the 40s.

Read that again recently. The first hour is still really good. But I had forgotten how much it descends into a big-budget A-Team episode by the end...rather dull extended shootouts with clunky editing. I guess that marked the moment where smackfu's destiny lay in talkbacks that were more about action than drama, for much of the next decade. Ceejaynightwing was talking about the real ones, you know.. actual comic book films that have source material originating from an actual comic book, not this "marketed as" bullshit. If you consider that kind of stuff the same thing may I suggest you look into this awesome "comic book" show called THE CAPE.

  • March 22, 2011, 5:55 p.m. CST

So now there are trailers...for trailers?? sad, soo sad.

    by Arkhaminmate001

From Joe Johnson the director of classics JP3..........and 20 years ago..The Rocketeer...hopes are not high for this drivel. Captain America costume looks good in a comic but v. stupid on film. you all enjoy the movie, think i'll sit this one out & wait for TDKR & Super 8

"Contradict" is not synonymous with "correct"

Swap those two words out and you've got a sentence that is half correct. Now if you swapped out "pretentious" with the word "pathetic" in the second part, you would have an excellent descriptor of your own useless self. You are the Jar-Jar of AICN. Oh yeah, and I just loved it above when you mentioned Batman saving Gotham from the "Joke" with a "super ass fuck". What kinda comics are you reading anyway?

That's all that needs to be said. My enthusiasm for this cannot be contained. This is going to be THE superhero movie this summer. Sure, Thor and Green Lantern look good, well, Green Lantern looks awesome I think, but this looks like it's gonna kick your fuckin ass and then some!!! I knew when they announced that they would be doing this, that we were in for something. And from what we've seen so far, I think it's safe to say we have been right on this one.

  • March 22, 2011, 6:51 p.m. CST

    Kill Bill?

Poor Drain, are you confusing yourself again? So which is it I a "shithead" or a "bonehead"? And can one be both simultaneously? Why not add a "blockhead" or maybe a "dunderhead" in there as well since you've already used up your at least once per post quota of any of the various terms for feces?

Cap America, Batman, and Braindrain and choppah.

    by Norman Colson

I'm gonna see it, just because it's gonna connect the avengers movie. Also it looks good to see it on the big scene. but i think they could have went with dennis quaid as an older cap. and used cgi to age his face. Choppa and braindrain. God y'all two need to get to vermont, gay marriage is still in effect! lol. And batman trained all his life to protect gotham city. He can kick caps ass because of the martial arts skills and determination, but that's the only edge he got.

The facts: Rocketeer is not a great movie

    by MattmanReturns

But it is a fun, nostalgic one (people around here are always confusing nostalgia with quality). The acting is not particularly impressive (except by Dalton and John Locke), and the lead character is very two dimensional. HOWEVER, it is a good action movie the perfectly captures its time period, with a beautiful score and some fun direction by Johnston. Also, if Jennifer Connelly doesn't give you a boner in that movie, nothing will.

  • March 22, 2011, 8:34 p.m. CST

If Rocketeer had a more charismatic lead

    by MattmanReturns

it would have been an instant classic and made box office gold (see Iron Man). The main actor (fuck, I can't even think of his name) really hurt that movie. With a solid lead, that movie would be much more popular today, and we'd probably have a blu-ray of it.

  • March 22, 2011, 8:35 p.m. CST

And for the record, I LOVE the Rocketeer

    by MattmanReturns

But I would never argue that it's a great movie. It's flawed to say the least. But it has a fond place in my heart. Still, it's a "you had to be there" movie, and a lot of people weren't there.

  • March 22, 2011, 8:37 p.m. CST

    and another thing....

    by qjinx

i forgot FF and Elektra Elektra...saw it opening day, my birthday sure, most of the movie kinda sucks as a whole, but its still elektra. the opening sequence came almost page for page out of Ruckas run. I own that run, and I loved that scene. its Elektra fighting the dont like it, go watch another bullshit buddy cop movie or whatever. Its not the best movie and its not in my top ten superhero flicks but Id put it on in the background while I do other shit. I look up, and see Elektra fighting the hand..and Im happy FF- yep we shouldve seen galactus....yes thing shouldve been bigger...but fuck if chicklis didnt nail the characterization of ben grimm. torch was funny, reed couldve been more confident, but hey...a live action ff vs dr doom fight!! silver surfer looks badass!! wolverine - so many plot holes..but as my argument stands....wolverine and a bunch of mutants we havent seen before duking it out on the big screen = not the worst time ive ever had at the movies Iron Man movies...fucking great..oh no! hes fighting more robots in the sequel!?!? guess what? thats what Iron man does, fights bad guys in other with it i personally have a blast getting to see these characters finally onscreen and you all should too...leave your bitching for real problems

  • March 22, 2011, 8:37 p.m. CST

    by MattmanReturns

I agree it needed a bit more action. Although, I thought the climax was pretty awesome, with the zeppelin exploding. I also loved the way Dalton got taken out... and took the "Land" of "Hollywoodland" with him.

The funny thing is, Iron Man didn't have much action either

    by MattmanReturns

    by MattmanReturns

none of those action scenes last very long. In fact, I think Rocketeer actually had a longer final climax than Iron Man did. Action was neither movie's strong point... but Iron Man surpasses The Rocketeer because of its central character (easily the most important factor in any movie).

Why Batman would never beat Cap by way of his fight with Kingpin

by Dirk_The_Amoeba a lonely, dark, damp, closet, a solitary figure, grunts hard and can be heard saying'673...674...675! Ahhhhhhh!'. Yes, the Batman 'bated, and was immensely satisfied with the result. He had achieved a new level of control. Next goal, 1000 faps before spilling the guano juice. It can be done! Now, having completed his pre fight ritual he ready to face the Kingpin. Kingpin entered first, and although high powered Klieg lights had illuminated the entire squared hexagon, The Batman hunched unseen in the shadows, perched on the upper most link of the cage, with his full body weight supported only by his left little toe. *sssss* 'I can see you up there numbnuts, aint no shadows to hunch in!' The Kingpin bellows. Batman knows this is a trick to get him to reveal himself. He hissses - self-satisfied that he has won the opening gambit. The fight begins. Batman drops to the floor and moves with lightning quickness, striking hard and fast. His blows reign down on the Kingpin from every direction. Kicks and thrusts and squats and kegels too! The Kingpin has never seen this kind of speed before ...Batman muses. 'Yes I have numbnuts, you know you '"muse out loud right?". I have fought Spiderman, you know, that dude that was bitten by a radioactive spider, given superhuman reflexes and strength?' With one prodigious punch, launched from a spinning, flying monkey thrust, of the third movement, of the hyena licks its balls, Kingpin lands a blow on The Batman that knocks him clear across the circle, er square, um hexagon. Batman scrambles to his feet and takes an internal inventory 'liver punctured...spleen ruptured, four ribs swimming freely, yeah this feels good! I have him right where I want him! Come on you rubenesque, cheese eating, fish smelling freak! Time to dance!' 'I can still hear you, you cowl wearing buffoon! And rubenesque refers to a woman!' I know that, The Batman hissed, satisfied that he had scored another psychological blow to the Kingpins manhood *sssss*. Time to end this. He leaps in the air, supremely confident that he has sussed out the enemies weakness, he spins mid-air and attacks from an angle no foe can begin to defend from. The Kingpin steps aside, reaches out and grabs Batman's cape, and throttles him with it. 'What idiot fights wearing a cape that easily be grabbed? No wonder DC sucks.' The Kingpin thinks before leaving a comatose Batman sprawled on the floor, as he hunts for his favorite all night fish taco stand. The End. pee ess ya think Cap wouldn't tie that non-detachable cape into so many bat knots?

JP3s biggest problem was a really pedestrian script

    by Smack_Teddy

Although they spared Billy? who i always thought just got a nasty shitty nihilistic fate in the book, for nastiness and deaths sake. Was young when i read that though The Rocketeer is far from a snoozefest. While Braindrain can be ok, he has like serious add or hits too many high GI or sugary foods, he says this about all kinds of films, to the point ive now become completely desensitised to his snoozefest description of things like Blade Runner up to the Rocketeer etc. I'd take his criticism of The Rocketeer with a grain of salt, perhaps from an inner troll, perhaps honestly not, is what im trying to say

  • March 22, 2011, 8:50 p.m. CST

Would you reets quit comparing Batman and Captain America?

    by Subtitles_Off

Second thought, go ahead. Who cares? Modern comics have turned both into stupid superheroes able to travel through time (granted, this was always Cap's schtick), resurrected from "the dead," replaced by their sidekicks. They're both logos. S#!t, they're pretty much stuck on the same storyline, more or less, for the past six years. Neither is relatively "real-worldish" believable. Neither is remotely a representation of "real men who have accomplished great deeds through their own self-determination." The only difference between the two, really, is the bat-shaped one used to be very cool but isn't anymore, and the other, flag-shaped, one never was.

Plenty of Hydra soldiers are shown carrying them and Dugan fires one off. So... some kind of Tesla style death ray? Alien technology? Did the cosmic cube charge up their tech? I expect a lot of moaning from the people who apparently wanted their Super-Soldier vs. Skull Face movie to stick to the history books. My favorite Cap storyline is Operation: Rebirth by the great Mark Waid and Ron Garney. It's thrilling superheroics done in an intense, no nonsense, Tom Clancy style. Here's the Amazon link: The Brubaker stuff is a little darker, but the quality of his writing is quite good. Probably not what you want if you're in the mood for lighthearted superhero fare, but definitely worth it if you want something a little more serious. The flashback of Bucky slitting nazi throats is awesome!

    Too many super hero movies?

    by u.k. star

I love the way people try to say that because we've gone from 1 or 2 super hero movies every 1 - 3 years to 5 or 6 a year that somehow there are too many? That's not even once a mont. How many romcoms in a month let alone a year? How many horror movies. Hell we've had about 3 romcoms centred around "friends with benefits" in the past few months and we're actually getting another CALLED FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS soon. Yet you think there are too many super hero movies? Please. there's over 130 films out this year in North America about 7 of them involve super heroes, and that's including the mega low budget Super. So if you really dislike super hero movies so much, then I suggest you take your pick from the other 95.5 % of movies released this year and let those of us who have waited years to finally see some of our favourite stories and characters get decent movie treatment, enjoy them. Also the Incredibes isn't a comic book movie because it's a super hero movie based on original, never before used characters and NOT on characters that previously appeared in comic books. The implication that animated movies are somehow not genuine movies is most perplexing.

I don't think the next X-men film can take the summer crown.

    by Chewtoy

The last two have been bad, which tends to hurt the box office of sequels. Plus it has no returning stars, is lacking Wolverine and many other favorites, and even at its best the film series was still well behind the box office of both Iron Man films. That's a lot to overcome. Now it's a longshot that any of this summer's hero films will break out as much as Iron Man did, but the possibility is there. I think one of them will at least beat the $230m that X-men 3 managed at the height of the series, though.

But goddammit if Cap isn't looking more interesting (judging from the trailers) than the other Comic based films. I'm glad that Marvel studios has Sir Anthony Hopkins as Odin and the Destroyer is another plus. I wished that the producers and Kenneth had used Thor's original garb since it is the iconic Kirby design and the more familiar look at that. But hey, at least it's not that shitty costume from the Incredible Hulk returns TV Movie.

The geeks at AICN pick two movies in the same genre to pit against each other, and only one can be good, the other must be crap. Once it was Iron Man and TDK, now it's two Marvel films, Thor and Cap. Honestly, they both look about as good as each other at this point, though I like that Captain America will be set in the WWII era, something we haven't really seen on this scale in a major superhero flick before. If Thor spends 90% of the movie on Earth and without his hammer/powers I will agree it sucked, but until I see it I am assuming it will have some cool comic-book type action as well.

    Thor looks great

    by eman1111

I am a loss as to why people would be more excited about the Cap movie versus Thor. Everything I have seen of Thor looks good. Asgard is gorgeous, it has much better actors than the Cap movie, Thor is a much cooler character, the director is an oscar award winner, writes great dialogue and gets great actors in his movies. The Thor trailers look 10 times better, more action and more fun. The Destroyer looks great, the hammer looks great and it will be much more original than Cap. While I am going to go see Cap so far the trailer was pretty unimpressive, it is set in WWII and I have seen a million WWII movies so there is nothing really original about it. The Red Skull still I saw looks really good and I like Chris Evans. So I will certainly give the movie a chance so far Thor looks much more interesting to me. As far as box office goes Thor will do much better better worldwide as Cap is really an American hero and if you are not from America why would you care about Cap, guess what you won't and in those countries that don't like America, and there are plenty of them out there, Cap will really bomb. So Thor is my first choice for a superhero movie this year.

    Cap and drugs

In the book The Great Gold Steal Steve Rogers underwent a rigorous bulking up process before they actually injected the Super Soldier Serum that involved complex vitamin and food supplements, along with physical training. The serum perfected him gentically, he was already muscled up before that and that telling is what I subscribe to. Besides, someone is actually gonna nit a pick that inconsequential? What anal douchery.

Captain America was wrong during the Civil War!

    by Arafel

People with super-powers are basically carrying concealed weapons, and there is nothing in the Constitution that says the government can't require someone to get their "weapons" registered. It showed just how rightwing Steve Rogers is, because he is probably a proud member of the NRA too. The government has the Constitutional right to provide regulations for arms; the right to bear arms was never meant to be unlimited. A person like Sentry, when he was alive, would be like a normal person carrying around a nuclear bomb in his pocket. That person should be forced to register and be watched closely by the government. I never understood why Captain America was opposed to registration, and by the end of Civil War #7 he realized he was wrong. That was when he changed his mind about his narrow view of the 2nd Amendment.
