Confirmed: Kevin Costner To Play Pa Kent!!

I am Hercules!!

Kevin Costner (“The Company Men”), the closest we’ve come yet to a big-screen Aquaman, is now set to play Superman’s adoptive father.

Zack Snyder’s project, said to be titled "Man of Steel," is rumored to be a kind of “Superman Begins,” following Clark Kent’s travels between Smallville and Metropolis, so there’s a chance we won’t see much of Lois or Lex in this one.

Little-known Henry Cavill (“Stardust,” “The Tudors”) plays the last son of Krypton.

Diane Lane, who starred in the Superman-centric movie "Hollywoodland" and played the mom of a superpowered kid in "Jumper," plays Ma Kent.

Snyder’s prior credits include “Dawn of the Dead,” “300,” “Watchmen,” “Legends of the Guardians” and “Sucker Punch.”

Costner’s other recent credits include “Rumor Has It,” “Mr. Brooks” and “Swing Vote.”  He spent a lot of time hanging around corn in "Field of Dreams."

Do we have to keep listing those as Costner's RECENT film credits?

    by BlackBauer0320

They don't exactly inspire confidence. More importantly, he's done stuff that's more recent and more better than those listed. Yes, more better.

...fucking rocked. After all, it does contain the single best shotgun sound in the movies. I love True Grit but OR was the real deal. Let Costner direct Supes instead of the CGI-infused Hack Shyter. At least it would have a heart and some idea of pacing. And btw I love Field of Dreams... 'Gooooo The Distance'. Who the fuck is that cold as not to love Lancaster, Jones and Liotta in that film.?

That first trailer looked like the ultimate nerdgasm, but that second one looked really bad. Has anyone in the world of AICN *actually* seen it? Like a preview version? And, if so, is it stupid-fun/awesome-cheese or just bad? Just curious, cause I'm all in in terms of the hot-chicks-in-fetish-gear vs. zombie nazi mutants angle.

  • March 17, 2011 9:21 PM CST

I'm on board with Costner playing Pa Kent.

    by Juggernaut125

As much as I do love Reeves as Supes, I'm really looking forward to a fresh run at the Man of Steel that will hopefully coincide with the current Batman movies and, if we are really really lucky, culminate in a 'Word's Finest' that would rock this world.

  • March 17, 2011 9:22 PM CST

More Ma and Pa Kent, less Jor-El and Lara.

    by hank henshaw

I'm all for this approach. I figure that casting Diane Lane and Kevin Costner means Ma and Pa Kent will have something more than a cameo. Hopefully, this also means this Superman movie is inspired by the more modern (Post-1986) take on the character, where he was raised on earth, and actually grew up believing to be human until his powers began to manifest during his teens.

  • His movies are good but too long to bear on the rewatchability scale.

  • March 17, 2011 9:25 PM CST

    by themikejonas

I appreciate that it actually does precede "Jonathan" in Superman lore, but it's been "Jonathan" for about sixty years now. Precedent or not, now they're just screwing with things. It's like if Spock starts calling himself a Vulcanian in the next Trek movie.

This movie should be about Jonathan Kent

    by Roger Moon

His early days, the courtship of Ma Kent, and that one special evening, never to be repeated, when Ma slipped her finger into Jonathan's coal hole while she gave him a Kansas City special. Jonathan never forgot that night and would often relive the wondrous experience as he masturbated in the shower while Ma made breakfast for Clark.

    by Subtitles_Off

And Superman doesn't kill him, but he won't save him either. "It's not what you are inside, Kal-El. It's what you do that counts." "What? That contradicts millennia of human thought." "Well, you know, you either die a hero or you live long enough to become a villain." "Really, Pa? Those are my only choices?" "Once, when I was in Korea, I saw a man with a diamond the size of a tangerine." "Ma! What's the matter with Pa?" "Son, your father is the man we need right now. Not the one we deserve. Or something."

Costner: Once the biggest star in the world

    by kiwicanuck

He really was. When Dances With Wolves hit nobody could touch him - for a couple years anyway. Maybe that's the reason I think he may take me out of this a little - a combination of the baggage and a rather limited range as an actor. In my eyes he's much like Tom Cruise, Harrison Ford and especially Clint Eastwood...they're such strong movie stars/familiar onscreen personalities, that they detract from the entertainment because I no longer quite buy them as "insert character here" and thus they hinder the experience of truly getting caught up in a film. I can see exactly how Costner's going to play it. Low-key, laid back, moralistic but likable, and the bitch of it is that's exactly how Jonathan Kent should be, so I understand the casting choice. It's just that, well, it also means he'll be especially likely to be Kevin Costner first and foremost throughout the film.

Well, it's just a matter of time before this gets snatched away from Snyder after Sucker Punch flops, so hopefully his replacement will actually be able to embue this film with some heart (like Costner always has).

    Costner

    by DeckardB26354

Kevin Costner is a shining example to me on how lame movies became in the 90's. The fact that he is in this and playing Pa Kent smells of suckage of the first order. The fact that a MILF like Diane Lane is playing Martha Kent is also a sign that Snyder doesn't know what the hell he is doing.

  • March 18, 2011 2:43 AM CST

Bad news! One note actor gets job!

    by Reelheed

This is a serious problem as Costner is on my banned list. The Untouchables is his only good movie and do you know why? It's because it's the first film I saw him in. In every movie he gives EXACTLY the same cornball performance. He's about as versatile as Roger Moore's wig.

okay, I guess. but John Schneider owns it

    by mrgray

Say what you want about Smallville, John Schneider was 100% badass as Pa Kent. He and Rosenbaum as young Lex are my favorite versions of those characters.

  • March 18, 2011 3:50 AM CST

    Kevin Costner?

    by Sanyi

That's some cool news, I kinda like Costner. Altough Mr. Brooks was crap (Costner was good but the film itself just a piece of shit). Open Range is my favourite and he was great in The Untouchables. But I doubt he will give us another iconic, great fuckin' performance in the new Superman movie. Under Zack Snyder direction? Come on! I mean I can't wait to see it but I have doubts.

  • March 18, 2011 4:08 AM CST

    I'm OK with this news...

    by ChickenStu

I mean, why not? I think the first movie should be called "Superman Begins", the second one should be called "The Man Of Steel" and the third should be called "The Last Son Of Krypton".

  • March 18, 2011 4:13 AM CST

This film could be my consolation prize

    by psycros

Smallville was a neat idea, but its never made a bloody bit of sense. Between the logistical absurdities of Metropolis being in Kansas, characters who live 3 hrs away in Smallville supposedly having full-time jobs there, dozens of untrustworthy people knowing Clark's true identity, Lex and Lois having known Clark since before Johnathon died, Clark and Lois having a full-blown relationship..its just ridiculous. So if somebody was to do a really good pre-Superman story in a nice two-hr format (or possibly even a trilogy) I'd dig it totally. I'd enjoy a compressed time collage of Clark discovering some of his powers - I'd vote for strength, speed and invulnerability being the ones he has good control over, while he struggles to manage the others (with results both comic and near-tragic). You could have a Ben Parker type scenario where Clark slips up and uses his power in some petty way, maybe to get back at some a-hole classmate..but the unexpected results reinforce the wisdom of his dad's advice about staying off the world's radar. And of course, you gotta have the Lang situation (and I would make Lana her middle name, mentioned only in passing). I'd also hope that the main conflict of the story would draw on character lore, but how deeply would depend on the talents of the writers. For the love of GOD, no Luthors of any kind - please! Maybe a memorable golden age villain could be retooled to menace the American heartland somehow. There's a lot of potential for a win here if the team actually gives a damn about the material and the legacy. Basically, I want something good enough to give the viewing public a full-on "amnesia touch" regarding Superman Returns. If there was a second film, I would have it revolve around Clark discovering his origins, being tormented by strange dreams of an alien world, finally banging that Lang chick, etc.

as an actor. He's been great many times before: No Way Out, Dances With Wolves, Revenge, Bull Durham. He's got the one thing that Pa Kent needs: genuine likeability. Perfect casting.

    by Dr. Egon Spengler

I wish they would go with lesser known actors/actresses for these roles. Unless he completely disappears into the role, I won't buy him as Superman's dad. He'll just be Dances with Wolves to me.

  • March 18, 2011 7:36 AM CST

    Fucking outstanding

    by NightArrows

Glenn Ford, like Chris Reeve, was seemingly born to play the role he did. However, Costner, IMO, is a fantastic choice for this role. Those who dismiss him really don't know what the fuck they are talking about. He is a great actor, and while not all of his movies have been stellar, he still has great acting chops for the right role. And this looks like it's one of those roles. He is extremely likeable on screen and I'm really interested in what he brings to the table in this film. Fuck the naysayers.

  • March 18, 2011 8:23 AM CST

    by tvspace

I am exhausted of seeing "beginnings" of everything. How many roboots of Smallville and Ma and Pa Kent are we going to see?!??! And Brandon Routh wasn't at fault for the poor reaction to the previous reboot. He delivered. He nailed it. He was channeling Christopher Reeve and the spirit of the man of Steel. Okay, not that's out of my system. LET'S GET TO REAL SUPERMAN STORIES! I'm tired of growing up with the guy. Adopted father dies. Adopted mother loses Supes to his higher calling. Whacky adventures in Metropolis ensues. BEEN THERE, DONE THAT... many, many times.

    by Blanket-Man

When I glanced at the headline. That would be an odd choice, huh? Maybe they'll get one of those other aging actor/director types to take over WOLVY, like Eastwood or Redford! They'd be as good a fit as Aronofsky... Heck, if Branagh's directed a comic-book flick, no one's too artsy-fartsy for the genre, right?

Can't believe AICN hasn't done a tribute page to him yet. I mean, what a totally random and inappropriate illustration of Superman's adoptive dad. Has it been confirmed that this will be a "walking the Earth" origin flick? That sounds ridiculous after ten years of Smallville. You're spot on 'cept for JFK. It's such a strong film, that even Costner's bad performance doesn't come close to sinking it. The man is a good actor tho. Delicate, delicate stuff in A Perfect World especially--he's not one note.

  • I particularly enjoyed the illustration of Popeye giving Grape Ape a blumpkin.

I just saw her in the Wonder-Woman costume...

    by Arafel

...and she looks perfect. Physical perfection. Yes, it looks like Wonder-Woman, but can she act and will the show itself suck? More than likely yes, but it can't be as bad as The Cape.

Otherwise, he'll be waiting by the phone for 20 more years until Tarantino calls.

    Someone please explain Eben

I'm not surprised AICN used a weird pic, I am just confused as to the origin of that image. Why does Pa Kent look like Superman with a beard? They aren't biologically related! Is that a fan drawing or some kind of Elseworlds or what?

    SIMPLETONS.

    by Aaron

SMALLVILLE doesn't count for an origin story. Why? Because it's retarded. I don't even know anyone who watches the show in real life except for the cute little porker who sits next to me in class. They want people like my mom, who actually knows who Superman and his supporting cast is / are / be, to go see it. They haven't done a proper, modern origin for the character. I for one am looking forward to it. Although they could've made it happen with Returns, but I shan't digress. Personally, I want to see a Golden Age Superman story. Then fucking go crazy with it and introduce the Multiverse to account for all the different variations of Superman stories. Ah, to dream...

Pretty certain that's fan art. A zoom-in reveals some Spanish (?) text tossed in there as well, leading me to believe it's lifted from some fansite. Either way, Eben != canon Pa Kent. The serial be damned.
