Shut up, Crime! The trailer for James Gunn's SUPER is here!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here.

You know how there are those movies that feel like they were made just for you, that play to your tastes and sense of humor? From everything I've seen of James Gunn's SUPER I think this film may be one of those for me.

I like sick, dark humor like nobody's business and from what I understand what we've seen is just the tip of the iceberg and this movie is fucking filthy... especially Ellen Page, she's supposed to be crazy in the movie. Like certifiably crazy.

The flick plays at SXSW and I will be there with bells on! Also, keep an eye out for a pretty spectacular contest (with some celebrity judges no less) we'll be running for this flick in the near future.

Enjoy the trailer!

How is this different from Kick-Ass and Defendor, exactly?

After "Slither," James Gunn is my homeboy.

    by WriteForTheEdit

I'm all over this like white on rice. Plus, how fucking hot is Liv Tyler looking?! Plus, despite all the gay rumors, I want Ellen Page. Badly.

  • March 4, 2011, 3:24 p.m. CST

    This looks

    by DrunkyMcLush

    fucking stupid.

  • March 4, 2011, 3:26 p.m. CST

    Ellen Page

    by HansBubi

So, is Ellen Page's character like a slightly older Hit Girl? Seems somewhat normal but then drops f-bombs, viciously kills people, and reveals a crazy side that goes against her young and innocent image? I'm curious if this movie will more openly sexualize her character because Ellen Page is obviously older than Chloe Moretz.

  • March 4, 2011, 3:28 p.m. CST

And so the Hollywood variation on a current trend continues..

    by CeejayNightwing

this time with a few better known faces than its predecessors to hopefully guarantee some butts on seats. Can't blame them for trying in this current climate, can't be any worse than Green Hornet and probably cost a tenth of that flick too by the looks of it.

  • March 4, 2011, 3:29 p.m. CST

    Nathan Fillion! Hooray!

    by ltgalloway

Everything he does is magic. Even without him it looks good. Looking forward to it.

He made a superhero movie already AND IT WAS SHIT.

    by ROBRAM89

Don't know what to think here.

I like it. I like the quirky look it has.

  • March 4, 2011, 3:46 p.m. CST

    Just looks cheap

    by Downboy

Everything about this seems to scream of a weaker Kick-Ass. They will try and one up Kick-Ass with the violence and language and it will be a worse movie because of it. Seems like a rental. Actually this screams of something that should be straight to dvd.

  • March 4, 2011, 3:48 p.m. CST

So Gunn said he didn't see Night of the Creeps before he made Slither.

    by Zombieflicker

So... he didn't see Kick-Ass before he made this?

  • March 4, 2011, 3:50 p.m. CST

    by dopepope

concept is done to death and the trailer looks pretty ordinary to me. I'll check it tho. Hopefully the movie works as a whole.

    Looks better than Kick Ass

    by Judge Dredds Dirty Undies

ie funny. Satire was sorely lacking in Kick Ass, which made me seriously question the presence of Hit Girl.

Great except for that "indy" look and feel

    by Papa CaveDweller

  • I got this movie confused with Defendor. Seriously, for a long time I thought it was Woody Harrelson and Ellen Page who were in a lower budget "costumed heroes in real life" movie. But yeah, like Defendor, Super looks like it will simply be released direct-to-DVD (or these days, we probably should say "direct-to-Netflix/Redbox"). This concept is absolutely dated now, and I think people would rather see a Kick Ass sequel. (Speaking of which, Mark Millar: you're taking an awfully long time to get the second issue of the Kick Ass 2 comic out!) I mean, for cryin' out, Chloe Moretz was 10 when they shot Kick Ass. She recently turned 14.

This is a full on movie?! Definitely seems redundant after Kick-Ass, but the presence of both Kevin Bacon AND Nathan Fillion will always give pause to anger. If only it wasn't Rainn Wilson. Not a fan.

Primarily because it doesn't have its powerless nerd protaganists kicking the bajeezus out of rooms full of 250-lb mobsters. They're still just nerds who run away when people point guns at them, and generally have to cheat in order to win a fight. Which actually makes it funny. :)

    by MARCEL_THE_NEGRO_PROJECTIONIST

Yeah, sure, it was filmed about the same time as Kick-Ass and got derailed by the bigger film, but, again, how is this not Kick-Ass? I mean, I love me some Ellen Page in green tights, she's the shit, but we've already seen this.

It's not kick-ass because it's a different visual style, a different storyline, a different skill-set by the characters (see that: 0 skill-set) and difference sense of reality. "How is Armageddon not Deep Impact?" "How is Goodfellas not Casino?" "How is Marcel not a fool?"

The only thing KICK-ASS made redundant

    by blackwood

was the possibility of more KICK-ASS. That film was wall-to-wall garbage, with Big Daddy and Hit Girl making it nearly watchable in spots. This looks better by far. Leaps and bounds.

  • March 6, 2011, 11:50 a.m. CST

    Meh.

    by NightArrows

I liked Kick Ass for the most part. But it should have either gone Kill Bill bananas (or Scott Pilgrim) or stayed in the "real". It walked a weird line crossing both worlds which hurt it IMO. This looks firmly planted in the "real" and looks low budget and really not all that funny or good. And I'm really burnt out on Ellen Page. I'll wait for rental, if at all.

  • March 6, 2011, 1:15 p.m. CST

    KICK-ASS

    by Rupee88

Yeah maybe this one got cheated out of being first or whatever...but Kick Ass wasn't even good and this looks worse. And Ellen Page is pretty but doesn't seem that fuckable..I mean naked she probably would be, but she is not a sexy chick otherwise.

  • March 7, 2011, 1:32 a.m. CST

I was at the panel for Super, a few questions answered.

    by Blindside462

So this looks great. The question was asked ... How is this different from kick ass? Well first, it is a very low budget film, made in the very low millions, the actors were paid in the thousands.. Basically volunteering their time. The only real similarity, as the director said, is that a normal guy is putting on a super hero outfit. The costume he puts on is like gravy and doesn't change who he is, it's more about the personal journey about the character finding himself. He doesn't know any special moves.. Just a normal guy that can maybe swing a ratchet or just pull the trigger on a gun. Anyway, this is what I remember about the differences.

  • March 7, 2011, 7:37 a.m. CST

    Oh dear where to begin.

    by Dolmes

    1) You're all wrong, Kick-Ass WAS good. The studios passed on it multiple times when trying to get funding because it was too edgy and near the knuckle. However, studios aren't stupid and they realise that the actual nerdy superhero plot is a good idea and decide to make Defender because Woddy Harrelson is suddenly popular again thanks to the Shaun of the Dead inspired Zombieland. Kick-Ass does some business at the box office so they decide to give the greenlight to this rip off. 2) "Shut up crime!" Check this link out, I wonder where they got the inspiration from? http://fat-pie.com/burntfaceman/index.html UK= Duh WINNING! ;)

I don't see anything particularly new or interesting here, just riffing on the same already-worn theme.
