Updated!! Donnie Yen in LEGEND OF THE FIST trailer looks awesome!!!
Hey folks, Harry here... with a really killer trailer for the latest Donnie Yen badassery, LEGEND OF THE FIST - which is getting a limited release in April! In particular - it does me proud to see the FANTASTIC FEST logo in on this trailer as well as AICN and former-AICN team player Devin "the madman" Faraci. There's a sequence that kicks off this trailer that once you see - will guarantee your ass in a seat. It has mine. I want to see this... yesterday! So cool looking.
The trailer is up over at APPLE - where they announced the iPad2 today - which must be coming soon to my house. Because - it's just so cool!

Purleeeeaaaase :)

that trailer rocked.

Auto, this isn't related to that film. It's the continuing adventures of Chen Zhen, the character played by Bruce Lee in Fists of Fury (Chinese Connection and by Jet Li in the remake Fist of Legend.) Harry, I'll be reviewing this one soon. I think you will quite enjoy it. Donnie Yen's on an incredible run right now that has shot him (finally) into the upper echelon of asian martial arts stars where Jet Li, Jackie Chan and Tony Jaa reside (Until Tony had his meltdown).

Here's an excerpt from my review of Ong Bak 2 (apologies if this steps on anyone's toes, Harry. This just lets me cut and paste!) "This is also the film that may have ended his career. It’s well publicized that he had a nervous breakdown during the filming and disappeared for several weeks during production. He was running well over budget and the film was running late. He tearfully made his appearance on a radio station to discuss what happened, and Baa Ram Ewe brought in his Ong Bak director Prachya Pinkaew to help edit and finish directing the film. There was so much footage that they shot additional scenes and split the film into two parts. Nevertheless, the damage to Jaa appears to have been done, and it’s easy to see why. Jaa wanted to direct his own films like his idol Jackie Chan, but Jackie cut his teeth behind the camera for years before he stepped in front of it, and did so when there were no expectations of him. Jaa had to be under immense pressure to top his other films, and after watching the fight scenes, it had to be too much, to balance that, the budget, the studio’s demands, and his own lofty standards. Jaa joined the monkhood, and who knows when he will return? It may be a year, two years, ten years. We may have seen the last of Jaa. I hope that’s not the case, but for now we have to consider him lost to cinema history—until he comes back."

Must... see!

...along with the good people at Well Go USA. And I want to remind everyone that, just like we did for IP MAN 2, we are releasing the ORIGINAL Hong Kong version of the film, undubbed and subtitled, with the bone-crushing violence completely intact, not a single frame cut or out of place, and no rap music dubbed in anywhere. Folks showed up for Ip Man 2, and as long as they do, we're going to keep bringing the best Asian action films to US theaters. You could import a DVD, but trust me- you haven't seen these movies until you've seen them on a thirty-foot screen with 12,000 watts of Dolby Digital 7.1 sound ripping your eardrums out of your head. So please- show up, because these are so much fun to work on that we want to keep doing them, and doing them better- with the ultimate goal being releasing them the same day they come out in Hong Kong.
-
Seriously. That's just ridiculous.
-
The character of The Fist looks a lot like Kato from the Green Hornet. Any connection there?
-
Did you ever see the HORRIBLE one where Jackie Chan sort-of played Chen Zhen? It was called New Fist Of Fury, it's from 1976. Chan was only 21, and they REALLY wanted him to be the next Bruce Lee- so much that they changed his name to Sing Lung, which literally means "Becoming the Dragon". Same producer as Fist of Fury/Chinese Connection, but really just insanely bad Brucespolitation. Chan plays a kid who meets Chen Zhen's fiance and somehow becomes his heir apparent. It's awful.

Its one of his worst films. Once it gets to 1925 its slows down to a snails pace
by Larrylongballs
There are better Donnie Yen films out there.
-
Fight scenes were good but a confusing movie over all. The masked super hero thing was silly. Donnie hasn't made a good movie since IP man 1 and Dragon tiger gate.

The beginning is good. And the black mask fight scene shown above
by UGG
the rest is pretty boring unfortunately. Even the end fight I can hardly remember.
-
Cant wait to see this!
-
That was all Lo Wei's idea, and along with a few more films it all tanked for him, but that was the best thing for Jackie, since Lo basically said "screw it" and let Jackie do what he wanted to since he only had a few more films in his contract before he could be released. Thus he got loaned out to do Snake in Eagle's Shadow and then Drunken Master. So embarassing failure turns into mindnumbing success for Jackie. For Lo Wei, not so much.
-
where Chen Zhen doesn't get killed by a firing squad and more. Original title is LEGEND OF FIST: THE RETURN OF CHEN ZHEN
-
better bring the story because this film destroys it in terms of everything else.
-
take my word for it. the poor man's Fist of Legend. sorry Bruce and Jet, Donnie dropped the ball on the Huo Yuen Jia/Chen Zhen saga.
-
Hey Variance, I had some further questions about your HK theatrical releases in regards to screenings. If you type my name into any search engine, you'll easily find my website Kiai-Kick!. Of course the invite is for all, fellow talkbackers, but could you leave me a way to contact you?

Anyone and everyone can reach us by shouting at us on Twitter @variancefilms or shooting us an email to info at variancefilms.com. Should warn you in advance, we curse a lot.
-
That's 100% correct, and the full title for the US release remains LEGEND OF THE FIST: THE RETURN OF CHEN ZHEN. That Donnie Yen series (from 1995) ran thirty episodes, and isn't bad, either, if you can get your hands on it. It's called FIST OF FURY, and it sprung up out of the popularity of Jet Li's FIST OF LEGEND from 1994, which I still think is one of his best (and was Yuen Woo-Ping's intro to the Wachowski Brothers who eventually hired him on Matrix, as a side note).
-
Show the Mid-Atlantic region some love this time. I'd have gone to see IP MAN 2 if it wasn't a multi-day affair to get to the theater and back home.
-
Was at the Hawaii International Film Festival last Fall. Avail' on Hong Kong DVD (not bootleg) already.

Hmm, that trailer is actually better than the film...
by ThePorkChopExpress
It's a good movie, but don't go in expecting a full on kung-fu film that most early reviews might suggest it is. That was my problem and I was sorely disappointed. The opening sequence is grand, however the quick cutting style overshadows the few brilliant moments featured in it - it is also too short. Unfortunately, that can be said about the rest of the action scenes through out the movie. Everything slows down a lot through the middle as well, leaving you wanting more. The story is good, if a little confusing, and it does a good job of keeping you interested by the constant sense of it all building up to big action sequences (and to finally see Donnie Yen kick some serious ass) but it never really comes to fruition. There is a bigger fight at the end and even that is a pretty forgettable - evidently so as I can barely remember it. I took a friend to see this as he hadn't been into Donnie Yen yet and early reviews suggested this had all the staples of a classic Donnie Yen kung-fu film... but alas, it is definitely not! I went home and got out Ip Man 2 which I hadn't seen and it blows Legend of the Fist out of the water I'm afraid. Should have shown my mate those 2 films instead! Yen is still awesome and the movie IS good, but that trailer and the early reviews will have you think it's among Yen's best but it most certainly is NOT.

We're not done with Ip Man 2 yet, have no fear. Alas, the way this works is that people have to keep coming in order for new theaters to come on board, and as we've gotten into smaller cities and the south the grosses have dropped a bit. But we'll keep pressing to any theater that will have us- if you have a local theater that plays cool indie films (and REAL indie theaters are best, not Landmarks or such), give them a shout, ask for the manager, and let them know there's a crowd for Ip 2. You'd be surprised how well that can work.
-
seeing as how I enjoyed Yen's work in Ip Man.
-
at least the version I saw the other week was.

Can't touch Ip Man. Fight scenes are great, but the plot [evil Japanese vs oppressed Chinese] has been done in Ip Man, Fist of Fury [to which this is a loose sequel] and practically every Chinese martial arts film ever. It's certainly good, but not great, and not as action-orientated as you might think. Saying that, Donnie Yen fights like a bastard and is a charming leading man. But his greatest film this ain't.
-
Get them to make a propper Green Hornet.
-
Not great. The film starts out with an incredible action scene but after that the movie just stops. That last days, Curt Cobain movie is an action flick compared to that middle section of Legend of the Fist. When things finally start to move again, it all sort of ends with a sizzle. Very disappointing.

Still, while this may not be "Iron Monkey," it'll be better than "Iron Monkey 2" which I paid good money to see...

Plus having Tim Curry as Hook was awesome. Was perfect as Hook's voice.

My bad.

Do you also complain about all these stupid PG-13 Hollywood superhero movies being ridiculous (e.g., Batman, X-Men, Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, etc., etc., etc.?
