Another PERCY JACKSON Movie?? Apparently It May Happen..
Merrick here...
Even though Harry wonders whether PERCY JACKSON's first film, THE LIGHTNING THIEF, may've made young boys cry (details HERE), the movie still pulled down around $226 million globally - that's a shitload of crying kids by my estimation. And, it now seems Fox 2000 may be interested in pushing forward with a big screen franchise.
Like THE LIGHTNING THIEF, the next PERCY JACKSON adaptation would be based on Rick Riordan's literary source material (specifically THE SEA OF MONSTERS). Chris Columbus, who directed the first picture, is not expected to helm this new installment - although he will be around as a producer.
The lead cast members, headed by Logan Lerman as Percy Jackson, will come back, according to the person who was briefed.
...says THIS L.A. Times piece, which also mentions that Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski have already been brought in to write a script. Promisingly, they wrote Tim Burton's magnificent ED WOOD. Alarmingly, they also scripted AGENT CODY BANKS, effectively confounding and neutralizing my enthusiasm for her involvement.
I found myself unmoved by PERCY JACKSON AND THE LAST OLYMPIANS: THE LIGHTNING THIEF, but I know a hot girl who loves it. LOVES it. I'll pass this news onto her in the hopes that she'll jump up and down and squeal.

yeah kind of a lame movie but i can sit through it when its on cable.
-
what?
-
are you drunk?
-
all hated it. None of my nieces, nephews, or cousins kids had anything good to say about it. And none of them said they'd go see another one if it got made. Should be interesting to see what happens when it's released.

Take a promising concept with a lot of shitty writing (a blatant Harry Potter knockoff where they get SWORDS instead of wands, and fight fucking HYDRAS and MEDUSA instead of wizards - sounds cool in theory). Deal with the main problems of the book series (the lead character is a fucking moron; starting the whole thing from 12 is too on-the-nose; the Faun is so fucking Ron Weasley that it hurts), correcting them for the movie (give Percy great instincts and make him realize things himself, age the characters into late high school, make the Faun more of a generic "wacky black sidekick" - only more useful than Ron Weasley, 'cause he can fight). Insert known actors as various gods and mythological creatures (Pierce Brosnan, Sean Bean, Rosario Dawson, etc). Add great musical score and an exciting action climax that the book totally lacks. PROFIT.

My godson really got into the books when the first film was released...
by Chewtoy
...so he might be thrilled to hear that they're doing another one. I'm not sure what he thought of the film once it finally came out.

I got tired of the brooding bullshit and enjoyed Percy thanks to the lack of teen angst. And Clash of the Titans was just like watching a very bad video game.

The first one tried too hard to be a Harry Potter clone, IMO.
by Tarijeno
But don't take my opinion as fact, because I, like most people, didn't see Percy Jackson. The book and it's plot may very well be original and spellbinding, and completely different from Potter, but the advertising campaign relied way too heavily on the Chamber of Secrets.
-
I got about 30 minutes in and I had to turn it off. Pierce Brosnan isn't actually a cripple, he's a centaur hiding his horse-ass in a magical dimension in his wheelchair. Percy's comfortingly ethnic BFF is actually his ancient protector. Fuck this lazy crap, at least I managed to watch Clash of the Titans to the end (in 2D).
-
Still, Clash had a better Medusa. Uma fail.

I'm a teacher and have read all 5 books to my class. The books really are great and I was really looking forward to the movie but I was dissapointed. Many of the major plot details from the book were changed or left out for the movie. <p> I would consider the second book the weakest of the series so I'm not sure how that will work as a movie. I would love to see the fourth and fifth books turned into movies. I doubt they will continue to make movies off of each book though.

I'd definitely be down with a sequel, I'm just very surprised one is being considered because the grosses of the first film were so underwhelming. If anything it barely broke even. Production cost: $95M Marketing/Prints: $45M+ Total Cost: $140M Picture Gross: $226M Studio Share of Gross: $130M So looking at that right there the studio lost $10M but they probably made $50M in home video for a total profit of $30M. That's one razor thin profit margin and considering sequels can frequently do only 50% of the business of the original it could be a costly gamble to greenlight another film.
-
.....who somehow lucked out because so many Americans loved Home Alone and Harry Potter fans were so rabid that they went to see the decidedly average Philosopher's Stone 20 times each and still went about 15 times each to the mind meltingly awful Chamber of Secrets. #my eldest was 10 when she saw that first film, with her 10 year old cousin, they still make jokes about where Pierce Brosnan's Horse body hides when he's in his wheelchair. The incredible stupidity of a group of characters who have allegedly been studying Ancient Greek "history" all their lives was apparent even to young children. Also yet another "pretty" Medusa (do these people not read any Greek Mythology before writing / directing these films?) was even worse than the one in Clash. I'm not sure which is worse, Clash or Percy, but as I have no intention of ever watching either again I shall remain blissfully ignorant of that little fact.

Decent movie. Would have been better if Columbus didn't helm it. Still, decent movie.

I'm in for a sequel with another director. Mythology is fun in movies like this unlike the Titans remake (blew).
-
that what the first movie was to me dramatically. it just didn't do anything for me. It was certainly well made production-wise. But it just felt damn flat.
-
I'm glad the series will continue. My kids liked it and it was one of the few flicks that I, as an easily-bored parent, enjoyed as well.
-
...why doesn't Fox just fix their mistakes and continue on with the Inheritance saga? Of course, it's going to have to be recast...due to the fact Ed Speleers is too old, and Garrett Hedlund's busy doing other stuff...
-
I thought it was funny and cheesy, but it was meant to be that way, with great action. Anyone expecting more than that, just love to complain. A sequel should be fun as well. It's impossible to impress fanboys, geeks, and nerds 24/7.
-
My Mom just died!! How sad. Huh. Oh well. Hey cool summer camp! Oooooh centaurs and stuff! This may have been one of the worst written major movies I've seen (except for GI Joe).
-
the first one is wretched and Im not sure how people who read harry potter before the movies felt but to me at least they got most of the plot right with him. With the Percy they slaughtered the fist book with a rusted fork very little of the book was actually seen in the movie. If they were not trying to follow in harrys footsteps and made an accurate movie of the sea of monsters It would be a compelling and more successful movie if we can get past the first one. and as an added note unlike the author of harry the author of percy has no collaberation with the movies and from what ive read he is unhappy with the mess that disney has made of his work.
-
I read the books. They are strangely PRO WEST RAH RAH -- very surprising. They are also light on their feet and kind of fun. The first film was wrong in many ways -- the books read like (very involved) film treatments, super brisk and snappy, so I was surprised at what they changed for no reason. If it moves forward I hope they hew a bit closer to source. Could be fun if done right, first wasn't so I don't have high hopes.

Is this the first Harry Potter ripoff to actually get a sequel?
by Nasty In The Pasty
I can't think of one other that did.

Complete Harry Potter Rip-Off and NOT a good one!+

I was kinda looking forward to Percy Jackson but after watching it I found it to be incredibly shallow and bland. Which is amazing considering that it is about greek mythology! I'd not read the books but a friend who watched it with me had, so when I mentioned all the problems I had with the film, all the stupid crap that didn't make any sense, he said all that was explained in the book. The thing is, yes there are pleanty of books out there that would make for great family films/franchises that could rival Harry Potter, but it goes without saying that they will be poorly adapted. The Potter films are far from perfect, with, for me at least, books 4,5 and 6 being the worst adaptations. Studios really need to get their act together when it comes to translating books to screen.
