The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day honors the late, great Jane Russell!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!

Today’s photo was supposed to be slightly more nerdy, but with the death of one of the hottest women to ever seduce an audience from the silver screen I felt a replacement was in order.

Jane Russell was famous for the controversy surrounding her bust, which was the big selling point of Howard Hughes’ The Outlaw. The censor board held the film up for years before relenting to Hughes’ pressure.

She wasn’t very prolific, but she made a huge impact on film, appearing in films alongside such talents as Marilyn Monroe, Robert Mitchum, Vincent Price, Glenn Ford, Rod Taylor and William Smith.

My personal favorite underseen Jane Russell flick is 1970’s DARKER THAN AMBER, which is also her last film role. The film’s based on a John D. MacDonald novel and features a lunatic performance from the great William Smith.

The most known and widely regarded of her work, though, is her co-starring role of Dorothy Shaw in GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES. As iconic as Marilyn Monroe is in that picture it’s a great tribute to Russell’s talent that she held her own.

Today’s pic comes from the making of a film called The French Line, which I have not seen. But it features Russell and the great director Lloyd Bacon, who came out of retirement to direct this picture. Bacon was known for musicals like 42nd Street, Footlight Parade, Wonder Bar and Gold Diggers of 1937, but he also directed some solid gangster pictures, like Brother Orchid.

Bacon is the guy on the right and it’s hard to miss Jane Russell. I’m going to include one of the more beautiful glamour shots of her and a great photo of her and Monroe making their mark in front of the Chinese theater as well. Why not?

Thanks for the years of entertainment, Ms. Russell. My thoughts are with your friends, family and fans.

Tomorrow’s Behind the Scenes Pic returns to our regularly scheduled nerd pic!

This is an obit talkback and you're acting like 12 year olds. I suppose it's because you all have the equivalent mental age of a 12 year old, no matter how much you protest. RIP Jane Russell, you'll be missed by those who truly appreciated your work.

Too bad some talkbackers cant be respectful. I wonder if AICN will take the proper actions against the offensive posts. Talkbackers like D.Vader were suspended for way less than what i´ve seen here today.

    Yes, let's be more respectful.

    RIP Mrs Russell

    by KilliK

  • This amazing lady went toe to toe with Hughes, and won. She was smart and not afraid to use her natural assets to further her career and to do it her way. It is to her credit that she turns cynical fanboys into drooling 12 year olds. She was a Goddamn goddess, she could act, she was smart, and man she knew she was a major hottie..

His Kind of Woman with Robert Mitchum. A veritable grab bag of clashing genres, plotlines moods and character types that didn't make much sense, but damn if it isn't fun as all-git-out.

    by maxjohnson1971

reminds me of the SNL skit where Aykroyd played Hughes and was wearing the bra he designed for her. It had airplane props on it. Funny shit. And Russell was hot as a two dollar pistol. Man, I wish they'd let women with some meat on them be in movies again.

Seriously. Such awesome, classy pacing. It would be cheap to produce, and everybody would have fun and look great, and it will never happen. On account of the lack of spotlights, douchebag hosts, dramatic pauses that draw a 15 minute game out over 5 commercial breaks, stars flogging crap, and a lack of tears.

    A talent for comedy

    by Bindweed

Thanks, Quint, for comemmorating her passing. I was beginning to think AICN had slipped up big time. Jane Russell was an enormously influential woman as far as this young man was concerned... I don't think I can underestimate the impact that those legs had on my formative mind when she appeared, out of the blue, at the end of Road to Bali. Some of my personal favourites among her work were the two Paleface comedies she made with Bob Hope and the much under-seen His Kind of Woman with Bob Mitchum. His Kind of Woman is a real riot, and Vincent Price is a hoot, practically sending up the screen persona he'd eventually adopt as horror king. And Russell is, of course, a natural femme fatale - both she and Mitchum perfectly at home playing with their tongue in cheek. Her stature after such a comparitively low number of movies is testament enough. They certainly don't make 'em like that very often any more.

    by DVaderRIP

Another golden age legend passes on. You will be missed. As for the boobies, I think she was quite comfortable with the place her gigantic jubblies had in the formation of her legacy. As long as you see her as far more than just a life support machine for a pair of tits, I think she'd be alright with it.

  • March 2, 2011, 7:48 a.m. CST

As a kid the only thing I knew about Jane Russell

    by Grammaton Cleric Binks

was she was in the commercials for some bra line. I think it was the Cross Your Heart bra. I had no idea who she was except for the lady from these commercials. It was only later I realized she was an actress. But yeah, as someone pointed out, bashing, or at least making funny comments in an obit here is perfectly acceptable if the person is a born-again Christian conservative. Try that when some liberal dies, gay, straight, or otherwise, and you'll be banned.

Wait...Brother Orchid? A "solid gangster film"?

by Damned if I can login

Quint...Quint....not even. Now don't get me wrong, I *love* Brother Orchid, which is a COMEDY that revolves around a gangster theme. Although it does seem to have some serious moments, such as Bogart trying to rub out EGR and thus EGR ends up at the monastary. And there were great performances from EGR, Bogie, Ralph Bellamy (his character was a hoot), and Ann Sothern. But a "solid gangster film" would be White Heat. Or Little Ceaser. Or Angels with Dirty Faces.

    by eustisclay

..for years. Been waiting for it and another Robert Cluse film. Golden Needles to hit dvd. Guess I didn't realize it was Russells last film. I always thought that her last was The Born Losers, the first Billy Jack film. She played a trashy mother in it, was quite good, and from what I've read about her, was the opposite of her in real life. But I agree with the above, you just don't see women(or men like Mitchum) like that in movies anymore. Our loss.
