A tidbit on the DUNE miniseries

Hey folks, Harry here. While I know that some of you are quite aware of this project, I figured I'd go ahead and post this up to fill in the rest of ya. There is a DUNE miniseries that has been underway and... personally I'm quite curious about. I remember when the Lynch film came out, it received the most viscious of treatment from Siskel and Ebert, and as a kid I just could not for the life of me understand it. I thought the film was really really cool. Later... after reading the Herbert novels... I began to see what they meant... but I've always held a soft spot in my heart for Lynch's DUNE, but the miniseries route is... quite honestly the place to tell this story. I just hope they nail it, the work deserves a great adaptation. SO here's ARJ3 and his tidbits...

Hello,

I thought for sure you would have mentioned this on your site (at least in coaxial) But here is the info from the official website for the new book that's out...

The SCI-FI Channel has begun filming the six-hour miniseries adaptation of Frank Herbert's DUNE, which will star Academy-Award-winner William Hurt in the role of Duke Leto Atreides. Production began Monday, November 22, in Prague, Czech Republic (presumably to film the Imperial scenes); desert scenes will be filmed in Tunisia. John Harrison ("Tales from the Darkside: the Movie") has written the scripts, which have been reviewed by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. Harrison will also direct the three-part miniseries. Giancarlo Giannini ("A Walk in the Clouds") is the only other announced star. Three-time oscar-winning cinematographer Vittorio Storaro ("Apolcalypse Now," "The Last Emperor," and "Reds") will be the director of photography, and Theodor Pistek ("Amadeus will be costume director. Special effects will be supervised by Ernest Farino, who did the HBO/Tom Hanks miniseries "From the Earth to the Moon." New Amsterdam Productions has previously done the critically acclaimed miniseries of "Stephen King's THE STAND" and "Merlin." Casting is still underway, although it's been announced that newcomer Alec Newman will play the key role of Paul Atreides. Also, Muriel Baumeister will play Princess Irulan, Uwe Ochsenknecht will play Stilgar, Ian McNeice will star as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, and Barbara Kodetova will take on the role of Chani. Italian screen icon Giancarlo Giannini has been signed to play Emperor Shaddam IV. "Frank Herber''s DUNE" is scheduled to air in October 2000. The project is budgeted at more than $20 million.
