More DUMB & DUMBER??

Published at: Feb. 28, 2011, 12:46 p.m. CST

Merrick here...

Bob Farrelly, one half of "The Farrelly Brothers" writing/directing team (HALL PASS, SHALLOW HAL, THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY and ME, MYSELF & IRENE)  is hinting that a sequel to the siblings' 1994 Jim Carrey/Jeff Daniels comedy DUMB & DUMBER is kinda/sort being mulled.

“[Dumb and Dumber] has run a bunch of times on TV in the states, and kids will come up and they’ll be able to quote lines from that – lines that I’ve long forgotten. If we could get those two guys back together, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels that might be a worthwhile sequel – and that ball is in motion. We’re starting to think about what those two dimwits would be doing twenty-years later in life, and hopefully we’ll be able to come up with something worthy of a sequel.”

A non-Farrelly DUMB AND DUMBERER: WHEN HARRY MET LLOYD project was released in 2003 - that picture was a prequel, whereas it sounds like the Farrellys are looking at a follow-up/sequel  - returning Daniels and Carrey to their roles (the prequel recast their parts).

Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels were funny as hell in this. I still chuckle when I think of Lloyd (in his dream) lunging toward Lauren Holly's husband, popping off shots and shouting "Die!" This movie was sick, twisted and awesome. I would definitely see a sequel, as I think would every fan of the original.

    by emeraldboy

was to me the funniest comedian I ever saw. when it came to pure slapstick. nobody better carrey. but as time as gone on, I have found carrey to be less funny or something. I have been a huge fan of his since I saw Ace Ventura with a school pal. that was so funny back then. it made me physically sick. I stopped enjoying jim carrey around Me, Myslef and Irene. Liar, Liar was carrey at his very best, I felt.

    by ScreamingPenis

It did gross the best, but that dog has been beat to death ever since. Movies have taken it farther and grosser. There are a couple of great character performances in Dumb and Dumber that can be re-done, but that's really not enough.

As much as I love the first one...NOOOO!!!

    by David Ortiz

I've never laughed harder in a theatre than when I saw Dumb and Dumber. Jim Carrey was pure genius and in his prime and Jeff Daniels' snowball fight with Lauren Holly was worth the price of admission alone. And therein lies the issue: Bad sequels can tarnish the memory of a great movie (MIB comes to mind), and I don't want that to happen to my favorite comedy. And let's face it - Jim Carrey can no longer bring it like he did back then. Is he still funny? Of course. But take a look at the film again and you can see the pure manic energy it must have taken to pull off what he did. And I just can't see him doing that again. So please Farrelly's, leave my memory of the funniest movie I've ever seen intact.

    by ChickenStu

Seriously, google it. Carrey is famous for it. He was so dissapointed with "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls" he vowed he'd never do a sequel to anything ever again ("Batman Forever" doesn't count, cause the character he played was exclusive to that installment). Seriously, the evidence is there. Sequels to "The Mask", "Dumb and Dumber" (a prequel in that case), "Bruce Almighty"... all been done, and all without Carrey. He won't do this on general principle.

    by James_Camera_On

Carrey seems to be going the Bill Murray route: bitter about never getting an Oscar, bitter about his career quietly failing, bored with comedic roles, marriages that aren't working. I agree with the above posters. Carrey with D&D II and Murray with GB III are in the same place. It is not going to happen which is sad because this sequel might work.

    by Cobb05

I don't think this will work at all. Jim and Jeff are getting a little too old to pull this off. I mean how sad would it be that you have Harry and Lloyd in their 50's, with no families or money or anything. So unless somehow we find them starting off being rich or something, it would be a sad movie to have them start off the same way they were in the first movie and end up the same way.

Sure, the odds of it being any good are looooong, but you've gotta figure that one of these way-later sequels will turn out well (and I don't see Ghostbusters 3 being the one). I never get tired of the original. The Sea Bass scene at the diner, the Gas Man's death-by-hamburger/rat-poison, "our pet's HEADS are FALLING OFF!"..., "You're Alive! And a terrible shot!" Right up there with Blazing Saddles and Arthur as movies that never fail to make me laugh.

Don't remake the original...change the dynamic.

    by firewhale

Make it more like a dark comedy. Harry and Lloyd have gone absolutely nowhere thanks to their idiocy and they have the alcohol addictions and credit card debt to prove it. Thanks to mortgaging 130% of their condo's value before the sub-prime meltdown and blowing the extra money on strippers and porn site subscriptions, they're forced onto the streets and begin dealing meth and squatting at an abandoned toilet factory. Things seem bleak until they find a roll of toilet paper with a mysterious coded message on it, apparently promising millions from the toilet scam that shut the factory down. Can they decipher the clues before the cops and/or their meth suppliers track them down? Turns out the message on the toilet paper just ends up being a bunch of shit smeared on the paper, leading to nothing. As all hope seems lost, the duo is saved by a fellow squatter seeing the image of Jesus in the shit-stained toilet paper and Harry and Lloyd make a killing duping gullible Christians into paying a dollar to see the holy toilet paper shit-Christ. The end. Oh, and they bang a hot nun, too.

Dumb and Dumber is one of my favourite comedies ever

    by Super Joker

But comedy sequels lose their edginess by virtue of returning to established characters. Comedy is a genre where it only seems to work effectively when its raw and on the edge; something you've never really seen before. The act of refinement and repetition are part and parcel of the sequel, and those things often counteract comedy. We're not looking for complex character arcs, here. It's also hard to please everybody. You could split the audience right down the middle between the fans who want to see the characters riffing on stuff from the original, and fans who want to see something as punchy and new as the first time. You can't have both. Sometimes its better to leave it and move on, no matter how appealing it initially sounds. And that's not taking into account disastrous variables such as executive interference. Modern studio risk-aversion is a guaranteed buzz-kill.

OK korkie70, Jim Carrey doesn't REPRISE roles... BUT

    by ChickenStu

The Dead Pool was made when Carrey was just starting out, and it was no more than a glorified it part. He was credited as "James Carrey" and it was good few years before his career took off. I doubt back then he would have turned down being in a sequel, cause he probably had rent to pay. And in Batman Forever, it was something he hadn't done before. I'n not sure if that came before "Ace Ventura 2" or not. But something about "Ace Ventura 2" made him swear off sequels forever.

I'd see it, but I doubt it'll happen.

    by Kyle

Didn't Jim Carrey go on some huge rant where he was all "Blah blah blah i'm too good of an actor to go back and reprise characters i've allready played blah blah blah!" Like he's done anything worthwhile as of late... I'd love for a follow up to Dumb and Dumber, but on the same hand, I really doubt they can top the first one...but if they've got good ideas floating in their heads...AND they can get both Jim Carrey, and Jeff Daniels on board, it could work...could work...

    D&D Was not funny..

    by MST3KPIMP

It was actually quite desperate and forced. It's success seemed to have ushered in the crop of low stadard comedies featuring mentally handicapped protagonists. Seriously overated.

    True, it was funny.

    by catlettuce4

But to answer the earlier question, I honestly remember laughing more when I saw the original Austin Powers movie. Still, why not do this if the idea is a good one and they all have the desire to come back for it? If it sucks, ignore it.

Well said, I think you got it completely right. Too bad, but I can't think of a comedy sequel that really goes against what you are saying there.

Sorry, but Dumb & Dumber is absolutely fucking hilarious...

That bit where Lloyd goes to get on the plane, but it's not there! That noise he makes whilst he's lying on the ground in agony is just priceless.

"hey lloyd how was your day"

    by REBEL_SKUM

"not too bad... fell of a jetway again" i love how that wasn't the first time supposedly! i think i've seen dumb and dumber more times than any other movie. when i was in university a bunch of us were finatics and would constantly quote the movie (and this was 10 years after it had come out). I honestly feel that the acting job by carrey and daniels in this movie is very underated. For example watch the movie and take notice of the character who is not speaking, so many times the other guy is in complete character reacting in ways that is almost as funny as any of the countless memorable lines in the movie... my all time favorite example of this is when lloyd pulls the whole "you'll have to excuse my friend he's a little slow" at the end, look at Jeff Daniels he gives a smile and waive as if to indicate "that's me" my other favorite thing about the writing/acting/directing, is that the characters exhibit different levels of stupidity and stay true to their character, lloyd is actually stupid in a life skills kind of way, whereas harry is for the most part a simpleton who loses it over dick and fart joke kind of humor
