More DUMB & DUMBER??
Merrick here...
Bob Farrelly, one half of "The Farrelly Brothers" writing/directing team (HALL PASS, SHALLOW HAL, THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY and ME, MYSELF & IRENE) is hinting that a sequel to the siblings' 1994 Jim Carrey/Jeff Daniels comedy DUMB & DUMBER is kinda/sort being mulled.
“[Dumb and Dumber] has run a bunch of times on TV in the states, and kids will come up and they’ll be able to quote lines from that – lines that I’ve long forgotten. If we could get those two guys back together, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels that might be a worthwhile sequel – and that ball is in motion. We’re starting to think about what those two dimwits would be doing twenty-years later in life, and hopefully we’ll be able to come up with something worthy of a sequel.”
A non-Farrelly DUMB AND DUMBERER: WHEN HARRY MET LLOYD project was released in 2003 - that picture was a prequel, whereas it sounds like the Farrellys are looking at a follow-up/sequel - returning Daniels and Carrey to their roles (the prequel recast their parts).

A sequel no one wants.
-
Want to hear the most annoying sound in the world? FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRST
-
I'd love to see it, but I think it's a pipe dream.
-
Seriously what movie made you laugh harder? and as said on this site. When you see Jim and Jeff in this you realise that Jim will never be funnier.
-
Get it?
-
Than when I saw the first one. Sure, it is stupid and juvenile, but that didn't make it any less funny. They probably caught lightning in a bottle, but if they can catch the magic again (and not just go for more of a gross-out R-rated comedy) then I am all-game. Bring it!
-
Hey that is actually really good!
-
5 of the first 7 posters want it. Something tells me you don't have a clue as to what people want.
-
You dumbasses . . .

The original really is one of the most gut-bustingly funny movies of all time.
by WriteForTheEdit
And Lauren Holly was such a fox back then...
-
No, 'to' cus they are dumb. Get it? Dumbass..
-
to and too are both wrong. Two (2) would be the right answer.
-
Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels were funny as hell in this. I still chuckle when I think of Lloyd (in his dream) lunging toward Lauren Holly's husband, popping off shots and shouting "Die!" This movie was sick, twisted and awesome. I would definitely see a sequel, as I think would every fan of the original.
-
Dumb and Dumber "To" because it's the most incorrect... Although "Tew" is pretty good too.
-
was to me the funniest comedian I ever saw. when it came to pure slapstick. nobody better carrey. but as time as gone on, I have found carrey to be less funny or something. I have been a huge fan of his since I saw Ace Ventura with a school pal. that was so funny back then. it made me physically sick. I stopped enjoying jim carrey around Me, Myslef and Irene. Liar, Liar was carrey at his very best, I felt.
-
It did gross the best, but that dog has been beat to death ever since. Movies have taken it farther and grosser. There are a couple of great character performances in Dumb and Dumber that can be re-done, but that's really not enough.
-
But I am behind a sequel. Dumb and Dumber is one of the top 5 greatest comedies in the last 20 years.
-
...I'd be on board for a sequel. Dumb and Dumber is the king of dumb comedy. So many great lines.

trying hard to think of a comedy better than dumb and dumber - best comedy of the 90's
by korkie70
and much much better than any of the paul rudd, seth rogan, adam sandler type movies outy there.
-
it's been forever since i've watched it. i thought it would be too juvenile for me now. nope. i still laughed my ass off. but it did mute the diarrhea scene. for fast effective relief
-
i still laugh just thinking about the slinky scene in Ace Ventura 2.
-
With some sort of cliche midget, monkey, kitten and/or bacon sidekick.
-
Come back home Jim! Also Cameron Diaz can wear her botox mask for the sequel!
-
then bring on the further adventures of Harry and Lloyd!

Harry Dunne & The Sequel That'll Never Get Made
by HarryWhereIsYourInceptionReview
-
I've never laughed harder in a theatre than when I saw Dumb and Dumber. Jim Carrey was pure genius and in his prime and Jeff Daniels' snowball fight with Lauren Holly was worth the price of admission alone. And therein lies the issue: Bad sequels can tarnish the memory of a great movie (MIB comes to mind), and I don't want that to happen to my favorite comedy. And let's face it - Jim Carrey can no longer bring it like he did back then. Is he still funny? Of course. But take a look at the film again and you can see the pure manic energy it must have taken to pull off what he did. And I just can't see him doing that again. So please Farrelly's, leave my memory of the funniest movie I've ever seen intact.
-
But I still to this day marvel at how those two kids look and act exactly like Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels.
-
Seriously, google it. Carrey is famous for it. He was so dissapointed with "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls" he vowed he'd never do a sequel to anything ever again ("Batman Forever" doesn't count, cause the character he played was exclusive to that installment). Seriously, the evidence is there. Sequels to "The Mask", "Dumb and Dumber" (a prequel in that case), "Bruce Almighty"... all been done, and all without Carrey. He won't do this on general principle.
-
I'd love a sequel!
-
dead pool batman forever

I`d actually love to see Carrey do another goofball comedy...
by Elgyn6655321
...I miss the old Jim Carrey of "Ace Ventura" and "Dumb & Dumber"...so I say yeah, if the script`s good, do it.
-
Carrey seems to be going the Bill Murray route: bitter about never getting an Oscar, bitter about his career quietly failing, bored with comedic roles, marriages that aren't working. I agree with the above posters. Carrey with D&D II and Murray with GB III are in the same place. It is not going to happen which is sad because this sequel might work.
-
Their career had the same trajectory as M Night Shyamalan's did - started with 3 classics: Dumb & Dumber, Kingpin, Something about Mary, and then nothing but crap since.

Same talkbackers who are always yelling about the lack of original ideas in Hollywood?
by Pop_aristocrat
I really don't want a sequel to this film. The original was great, but the story of these two guys has come to a close. How about some different morons instead?
-
I don't think this will work at all. Jim and Jeff are getting a little too old to pull this off. I mean how sad would it be that you have Harry and Lloyd in their 50's, with no families or money or anything. So unless somehow we find them starting off being rich or something, it would be a sad movie to have them start off the same way they were in the first movie and end up the same way.
-
It's utter bullshit to say they couldn't do it because Carrey and Daniels would be too old. They're not making the SAME movie, you can pick up any charaters' story later on.
-
Again, he wasn't reprising a roll for a sequel in Batman. Its a completely different matter. Is it...THAT hard to understand???
-
If they can get these two back together and if the script is good, this might be a chance to do some really funny stuff...seeing where these two ended up twenty years later. However, it would take some pretty genius comedy writing, and that's hard to find these days.
-

The same deal with The Dead Pool Korkie70. Chickenstu already excludes Batman Forever in his post because his character was not in the other movies.
by MRJONZ72
and of course his JC's character was not in any off the previous Dirty Harry movies.
-
I still haven't seen the original though
-
Does every moderate hit movie from 15 years ago need a sequel now? FFS... NEW IDEAS PLEASE!!!!!!
-
The WORM STORE, WE GOT WORMS!!!!!
-
Sure, the odds of it being any good are looooong, but you've gotta figure that one of these way-later sequels will turn out well (and I don't see Ghostbusters 3 being the one). I never get tired of the original. The Sea Bass scene at the diner, the Gas Man's death-by-hamburger/rat-poison, "our pet's HEADS are FALLING OFF!"..., "You're Alive! And a terrible shot!" Right up there with Blazing Saddles and Arthur as movies that never fail to make me laugh.
-
Make it more like a dark comedy. Harry and Lloyd have gone absolutely nowhere thanks to their idiocy and they have the alcohol addictions and credit card debt to prove it. Thanks to mortgaging 130% of their condo's value before the sub-prime meltdown and blowing the extra money on strippers and porn site subscriptions, they're forced onto the streets and begin dealing meth and squatting at an abandoned toilet factory. Things seem bleak until they find a roll of toilet paper with a mysterious coded message on it, apparently promising millions from the toilet scam that shut the factory down. Can they decipher the clues before the cops and/or their meth suppliers track them down? Turns out the message on the toilet paper just ends up being a bunch of shit smeared on the paper, leading to nothing. As all hope seems lost, the duo is saved by a fellow squatter seeing the image of Jesus in the shit-stained toilet paper and Harry and Lloyd make a killing duping gullible Christians into paying a dollar to see the holy toilet paper shit-Christ. The end. Oh, and they bang a hot nun, too.
-
And then go back into that prequel movie and accidentally kill themselves.
-

@mrjohns72 -Maybe - doesn't reprise roles would have been a better statment
by korkie70
you cannot say that its not being in a sequel if you character is not in the previous movies. q- was jim carey in a batman sequel a- yes q - was jim carey in a dirty harry sequel a- yes. but its ok. have it your way. its important to you
-
They've waited too long. I'd watch it now, yes. But it could have been a big comedy series of films.
-
I really don't think they realize how much money this would make. Ask any dude in college what their favorite comedy is and I GUARANTEE they'll say Dumb and Dumber. I would drag my dick through a mile of glass to hear Llloyd Christmas fart through a walkie-talkie. Please God, let it happen.
-
I will watch it every time I channel surf and it's on. I refuse to watch the prequel but a sequel with Daniels, Carrey, and the Farrelly bros? Hell ya why not?!
-
In my opinion, right up there with Airplane, Vacation and Anchorman. I say do a sequel, ONLY if it's the Bros, Carrey and Daniels.
-
"I don't think this will work at all. Jim and Jeff are getting a little too old to pull this off. I mean how sad would it be that you have Harry and Lloyd in their 50's, with no families or money or anything." I know you were going for pathetic and sad, but that actually sounds hilarious and entertaining to me. Let it happen!
-
Of course it's inferior to Dumb and Dumber, but I caught it in the theatre and I did laugh a few times. I think I went into it really wanting to like it, but at the same time keeping some low expectations, and the fact that it has the kid from Not Another Teen Movie (one of my all time favs) all added up to a decent experience. Oh, it also has one of my favorite lines: "Chicks are for fags."

the interview but see if I can find. I for one kinda hopes Carey would do it. I'm up for old some old school Carey and would like to see what him and Lloyd are up to after all these years. Hopefully the Farley's will be on top of thier game or at least close to it.. And I agree with you it was one of the funniest movies of the 90's.
-
He has a different facial expression every five seconds in this movie. It's incredible.
-
"Our pet's HEADS ARE FALLIN' OFF" (delivered with ultra believable emotional anguish).
-
can we bring that sweet piece of ass back?
-
A lot of great lines in this movie. <br><br> "Just when I think you couldn't get any dumber, you go and do something like this...and totally redeem yourself!" <br><br> "Places like this bring up bad memories." <br> "What's wrong? Did some little filly break your heart?" <br> "No. It was a girl." <br><br> "It's true what they say: old people, while slow and dangerous behind the wheel, can still serve a purpose." <br><br> "You have to excuse my friend. He's a little slow. The town's back that way." <br><br> If they can get Carrey to break his no sequels rule (When Nature Calls is also good. I can't imagine why he'd be disappointed by it.), it sounds like a good idea.
-
Here's an approach you can take. For free. 20 years later, Harry & Lloyd are now film executives living in Hollywood. For years they have greenlit sequel after sequel and remake after remake. And now they have an original idea and they don't know if they should make it or not.
-
There.
-
That's hilarious.
-
Harry and Lloyd are CEO's of major Wall Street financial institutions and preside over the biggest economic collapse since the Great Depression. Oh, you're telling me that actually happened? Hey, go for it anyway.
-
i approve
-
benni_diez's title wins.
-
...from a technical standpoint. Editing issues. Continuity. You name it. And yet it rates as, I think, on, or at the very least near the top of my list of all-time funny films. It's a big, stupid, goofy movie and I LOVE IT! So many lines my wife and I and her brothers STILL quote to this day. "That John Denver's full of shit, man." "Our pets HEADS are falling off!" "You know, old people, while slow and dangerous behind the wheel, can serve a purpose." "I'm getting angry. I almost like it." "HARRY! You're hands are FREEZING!" And so...Many...MORE!!!! Can lightning strike again? I hope so. mt
-
"My hands are getting kinda sweaty." If the script is good enough for the original cast to sign on I would be so down. There's not chance in hell it'll happen though. "nggurkhh" (being strangled to death) "Harry, your hands are freezing!"
-
I almost wet myself..!
-
Dumb & Dumber is still one of the funniest movies of all time. I can still quote it from start to finish. Is it on blu-ray?

But comedy sequels lose their edginess by virtue of returning to established characters. Comedy is a genre where it only seems to work effectively when its raw and on the edge; something you've never really seen before. The act of refinement and repetition are part and parcel of the sequel, and those things often counteract comedy. We're not looking for complex character arcs, here. It's also hard to please everybody. You could split the audience right down the middle between the fans who want to see the characters riffing on stuff from the original, and fans who want to see something as punchy and new as the first time. You can't have both. Sometimes its better to leave it and move on, no matter how appealing it initially sounds. And that's not taking into account disastrous variables such as executive interference. Modern studio risk-aversion is a guaranteed buzz-kill.
-
The Dead Pool was made when Carrey was just starting out, and it was no more than a glorified it part. He was credited as "James Carrey" and it was good few years before his career took off. I doubt back then he would have turned down being in a sequel, cause he probably had rent to pay. And in Batman Forever, it was something he hadn't done before. I'n not sure if that came before "Ace Ventura 2" or not. But something about "Ace Ventura 2" made him swear off sequels forever.
-
Didn't Jim Carrey go on some huge rant where he was all "Blah blah blah i'm too good of an actor to go back and reprise characters i've allready played blah blah blah!" Like he's done anything worthwhile as of late... I'd love for a follow up to Dumb and Dumber, but on the same hand, I really doubt they can top the first one...but if they've got good ideas floating in their heads...AND they can get both Jim Carrey, and Jeff Daniels on board, it could work...could work...
-
Took him 20 yars but he finally found the boys, and he's gonna rape 'em good!
-
It was actually quite desperate and forced. It's success seemed to have ushered in the crop of low stadard comedies featuring mentally handicapped protagonists. Seriously overated.
-
do we really need the farrelly Bros now?
-
But to answer the earlier question, I honestly remember laughing more when I saw the original Austin Powers movie. Still, why not do this if the idea is a good one and they all have the desire to come back for it? If it sucks, ignore it.
-
Well said, I think you got it completely right. Too bad, but I can't think of a comedy sequel that really goes against what you are saying there.
-

Sorry, but Dumb & Dumber is absolutely fucking hilarious...
by ChickenStu
That bit where Lloyd goes to get on the plane, but it's not there! That noise he makes whilst he's lying on the ground in agony is just priceless.
-
"not too bad... fell of a jetway again" i love how that wasn't the first time supposedly! i think i've seen dumb and dumber more times than any other movie. when i was in university a bunch of us were finatics and would constantly quote the movie (and this was 10 years after it had come out). I honestly feel that the acting job by carrey and daniels in this movie is very underated. For example watch the movie and take notice of the character who is not speaking, so many times the other guy is in complete character reacting in ways that is almost as funny as any of the countless memorable lines in the movie... my all time favorite example of this is when lloyd pulls the whole "you'll have to excuse my friend he's a little slow" at the end, look at Jeff Daniels he gives a smile and waive as if to indicate "that's me" my other favorite thing about the writing/acting/directing, is that the characters exhibit different levels of stupidity and stay true to their character, lloyd is actually stupid in a life skills kind of way, whereas harry is for the most part a simpleton who loses it over dick and fart joke kind of humor
-
These two characters in a post-Bush American era....huge potential here.
-
Firewhale, Just when I thought you couldn't possibly be any dumber, you go and do something like this... and totally redeem yourself!
