Updated! Quentin Tarantino's March Programming For The New Beverly Includes KILL BILL: THE WHOLE BLOODY AFFAIR!

Beaks here...

Back in March of 2007, Quentin Tarantino took over the New Beverly Cinema and ran a month's worth of grindhouse delights. THE MACK, THE CHINESE MACK, JOHNNY TOUGH, ROLLING THUNDER, BROTHERHOOD OF DEATH, THE MUTHERS, BARE KNUCKLES... two, maybe three rarely-screened movies a night for $7 a pop. It was a glorious time.

And now it's about to happen all over again.

As was announced last week, Tarantino is programming the entire month of March (and a little bit of April) at The New Beverly. In 2007, the centerpiece was a wild midnight screening of GRINDHOUSE on opening day (possibly the best time I've ever had in a movie theater). This time, the highlight will be a week-long run of KILL BILL: THE WHOLE BLOODY AFFAIR - the full version of Tarantino's revenge epic which fans have been waiting eight long years to see. That wait will finally end when the combined cut receives its U.S. premiere at The New Bev on March 27th.

But let's back up for a moment. The celluloid orgy kicks off on March 1st in appropriately idiosyncratic fashion with a double feature of the unrepentantly scuzzy CRACK HOUSE and the not-to-be-missed hickspolitation classic REDNECK MILLER. This is a one-night-only affair, so clear the fuck out of your schedule, knock back a six of Schlitz (provided you're not driving) and get there. From that point forward, Tarantino plans to scramble your brain with an eclectic mix of... well, I'll just list the titles and let you try to make sense of it.

March 5: SHAME OF THE JUNGLE (Midnight Only)

March 9, 10: Rod Taylor Night featuring DARK OF THE SUN and HELL RIVER (neither of which are available on DVD)

March 12: STONE (Midnight)

March 13, 14: Paul Mazursky Night featuring BOB & CAROL & TED & ALICE and BLUME IN LOVE (Yay!)

March 16, 17: MAN FRIDAY and COOLEY HIGH

March 22: Martial Arts Double Feature with THE HOT, THE COOL AND THE VICIOUS and FEARLESS FIGHTERS

March 25, 26: More Martial Arts! THE AVENGING EAGLE and DUEL OF THE IRON FIST

March 25: FRIDAY (Midnight)

April 1, 2: PULP FICTION (Midnight)

Christ almighty. And according to The New Bev's Phil Blankenship, there are films yet to be announced (which would explain why a few dates have been left open). I can't single out one pairing as being better than the others, but I would urge you to check out ROAD GAMES and THE ANDERSON TAPES if you've never seen them. I'm also a huge Mazursky fan, and would love to see younger viewers give his '70s films a shot; they're not nearly as dated as some suggest. And while I've never seen it, what's not to love about a movie called THE HOT, THE COOL AND THE VICIOUS?

Tickets haven't gone on sale yet, but I'm guessing that there won't be too many immediate sellouts. Given that THE WHOLE BLOODY AFFAIR will be playing for a full week, you should be covered if you don't buy your tickets right away. I've also been told that there probably won't be many special guests turning out for these screenings; the purpose of this series is to watch some cool fucking movies with a theater full of respectful film geeks. If you're down with that, I'll see you there for all of it.

For more info, check out The New Bev's website.

Update 2/25 at 3:26 PM: ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ and I ESCAPED FROM DEVIL'S ISLAND added above. Also, regarding KILL BILL: THE WHOLE BLOODY AFFAIR, Tarantino provided the copy stating that it is "The unrated combined version which has never been seen in the United States".  "It would seem that it it not the Cannes cut that has played the Egyptian & the Alamo," I have been told. If/when I get further clarification, I'll let y'all know.

    KILL BILL...

... is this a theatre-only, one week spectacular? Or is there going to be a re-cut blu release? Because my sister stole my Vol 1 & 2 and will never give them up, so I could buy this and go neener neener.

Thought QT would've released Whole Bloody Affair

    by Jet Jaguar

on DVD/BLU around the time Inglourious Basterds came out. Was beginning to think it would never come out. Here's hoping it's the actual re-edit he's been promising and not just a double feature of Volumes 1 and 2.

    by mrbeaks

Lionsgate recently acquired a good chunk of Miramax's catalogue for DVD/Blu/OnDemand/etc. distribution. I wouldn't be surprised if this unveiling of THE WHOLE BLOODY AFFAIR is priming the pump for a late 2011 home video release. And Tarantino's next project is quietly coming together behind the scenes. Hope to have something to report soon. I predict most people will be very happy with it.

  • Feb. 25, 2011, 2:45 p.m. CST

    Also, Tarantino's next...

    by blackwood

Is he even ramping up for anything? Agree he works slow, but... I don't know. Sally seemed hugely important to his process, right at the beginning -- he wrote thinking of her cuts. I wonder if he'll ever be able to find that kind of chemistry again, if he's looking or even wants to try and replicate it. I've never seen a Tarantino film I didn't like-to-love, so here's hoping he's, you know, doing okay. Also I want him to do sci-fi. Because awesome. Maybe he should hop on a plane and head over to China to help out RZA. Roth is there, but, eh, Roth.

    QT's next flick

    by Jet Jaguar

The oft-repeated rumour is that his next flick'll be a remake of Russ Meyer's "Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!" Although that would make for an entertaining film, it kinda feels like the same territory he was treading with "Death Proof." I'd rather see him tackle a genre he hasn't done yet, like Spy Thriller or pre-Star Wars '70s sci-fi or Superhero. I'd LOVE to see him do something in the vein of "Danger: Diabolik" or "Infra-Man."

  • Feb. 25, 2011, 2:57 p.m. CST

    Okay, so he IS ramping.

    by blackwood

Dear Mr. Beaks, I understand AICN has a relationship with Tarantino, like special friends who give each other handjobs but it's totally not gay because they aren't kissing when they do it, and I know that whatever you know you won't say until you're given the thumbs up, because no kissing, but just want to express my sudden and consuming anger that we will have to deal with another 1.4 years of Nordling posts, titled "RIDLEY SCOTT SNEEZED AND FARTED?! PROMETHEUS IS A PRESEQUEL CONFIRM DENIED!!??!??" and here you sit on something that is Very Relevant To My Interests (that, okay, might be a SNEEZED AND FARTED CONFIRM DENIED in its own right), and whatever happened to spilling beans because there were beans to be spilled, instead of holding on to handjob friends because no kissing means slicked palms for the right people none of whom are me? Yes. I feel better.

God I would BUY a BLURAY player for WHOLE BLOODY AFFAIR

    by AshokForgiven

Dont own a Bluray player. Dont plan on buying one ever. Unless Quentin decides to release that super special Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair and Inglourious Basterds: Directors Cut on BR-Disc, in which case I'll be in line at Best Buy on the double.

    Btw dont forget...

    by AshokForgiven

...QT originally said repeatedly in interviews before IB ever came out that for Whole Bloody Affair, he was gonna go back and film another anime sequence of Gogo's sister, which was in the script but he didnt have time to shoot it originally. Come on QT, I'm still waiting. :D

What is unique about "KB: The Whole Bloody Affair"? Is it recut, or is it not much more than putting the movies together, then...maybe...cutting the "her daughter is alive" spoiler at the end of Part 1?

If you're readin QT, I got talent and I got the time. C'mon, what else are you gonna do? I'm not in the union, so you don't have to worry about that. Plus, from the looks of this schedule, it's not like I'm leaving the New Beverly anytime soon next month, so you know where I'll be. Seriously, what have you got to lose? C'mon, Quentin, hire me!

  • Feb. 25, 2011, 3:50 p.m. CST

citizenchris, Tarantino planned Kill Bill to be one huge film

    by SithMenace

but Miramax made him break it into two films. That most likely required a complete re-structuring to make each film work on it's own. What I'm hoping is that he takes both films and completely re-edits them into the single film he was planning all along, complete with extra footage. But I agree, if he just cuts them together as-is, it would be no different than watching both of them back to back.

  • Feb. 25, 2011, 3:56 p.m. CST

    thanks sithmenace

    by citizenchris099

I knew he was sorta forced to cut it in two. I just didn't realize how much he had to restructure/compromise the original single version in order to do that. I only ever watch the movies back to back (now that I can) I'm extremely leery of double dips so I need there to be a real difference in order to warrant a potential new blu purchase.

I seem to remember that QT had indicated that he was going to tone-down the violence on THE WHOLE BLOODY AFFAIR, starting with the fight between Thurman and Fox. Hopefully, west coast viewers will be able to confirm.

KILL BILL "Hong Kong edit" at the Drafthouse

    by kevrock

I went to the KILL BILL screening QT showed at the original downtown Drafthouse location. QT was in town filming DEATH PROOF - in fact, Kurt Russell attended the screening along with his Stuntman Mike hair. QT talked for maybe 5-10 minutes explaining the differences with this version (see below) then sat down w/ KR and a couple lady friends and ate food and watched the film like the rest of us. The print was exactly what he showed at Cannes, dubbed the "Hong Kong edit" since that's the only other place it screened in this format. It opened w/ the Cannes film fest logo and was subtitled in French for the entire duration. The films played back-to-back without stop and was only missing the couple min B&W driving segway that opens Vol 2. Additional scenes consisted of longer a few minute longer version of the Bride vs Crazy 88s in the House of Blue Leaves. These scene were in FULL color, no B&W, with the camera holding slightly longer on limb severing and arterial sprays. Afterwards, QT and KR hung out for a few minutes, shook some hands, and then walked back to their hotel. Great time. Definitely one of my top Drafthouse experiences ever.

  • Because she deserves her revenge just as much as The Bride deserved hers.

Mr Beaks - differences in cuts

    by golden tribw

I can't give you sources for this, but as someone who's tried every few months to track down any new info on THE WHOLE BLOODY AFFAIR I am confident I've read more than once and from reasonably reputable sources that Tarantino was having new animation done (I forget if it was a new sequence or just an expansion of the Oren Ishii backstory) .... but that definitely didn't exist in 2007 so that would be one difference. If it's an unrated cut it will probably also show the entire House of Blue Leaves fight in color like the Japanese edition did. (I knew before it came out that he wouldn't order hundreds of gallons of the brightest-red-possible fake blood for a scene intended to end up in B&W....)

I've been unable to confirm anything about the a new animated sequence. Guess we'll just have to wait until March 27th to find out. As for Tarantino's next project (should it come together), all I can say is that he has *never* discussed it publicly. And while I understand your frustration, blackwood, and take no offense, I don't want to spill the beans before I know it's a go 'cuz that could complicate shit behind the scenes - and I really want this movie to happen. So please be patient. It's close.

    by AshokForgiven

I know right after IB came out, QT said he was wiiiiiiiiiiide open for his next film project. He always wanted to do James Bond but Barbera Broccoli personally torpedoed that project. He toyed with Pulp Fiction 2: Vega Bros. but decided to can it. Killshot was on the table but QT ended up scrapping the project and selling the rights to John Madden. That only leaves one publicly mentioned project remaining, a southern Western. And if that isn't it --- wow, I have no idea.

    Sequel to Inglorious

    by Shan

A sequel to Inglorious Basterds where they show the consequences of Hitler being killed early could be interesting, especially if the war was still going on after 1945 because Germany's Armed Forces no longer had to be hamstrung by Hitler's increasingly erratic and stupid orders as the war went on.

Just saw Death Proof the other day...

    by Han Cholo

OK first and foremost, the best thing about that film, hell the only good thing about that film was Kurt Russell and the car chase. Everything else absolutely SUCKED!!! <p> Everyone else, including all the girls in the movie were utterly unlikeable. The dialogue was, once again, pointless like it is in EVERY Tarantino film. Not one line in the movie moved the narrative forward. I don't even remember one line from the movie unless it came from Russell. I actually fast forwarded the second part with that blonde stunt chick, that ugly black chick, and Rosario Dawson. <p> I'm gonna do you all a favor and not put a spoiler alert. When it finally got to the action, I actually cheered when all those chicks in the car were killed in grandiose fashion. They were so fucking annoying and had absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Then the second part came on and the other chicks were just as annoying and pointless but they just happened to be stunt women so they're able to turn the tables on Stuntman Mike? Needless to say, the movie is terrible when there's talking and that's pretty much the whole time. If you're gonna see this, see it for Russell. Otherwise don't waste your time, or two hours of your life.

Bloody Affair and Shame of the Jungle

    by Quint

If anyone is in LA and chooses not to watch Shame of the Jungle they fail at life. It's a risque animated film featuring pretty much the entire vocal cast from the early SNL days, including Bill Murray. It's crazy awesome and one of the best audience movies I've ever seen. And Beaks, Ravvy is right. Tarantino screened The Whole Bloody Affair in Austin before the original Alamo Downtown closed. If it's the Cannes cut (which I assume from the "first time screened in the US statement) it played the Alamo. Not that it's not special or badass to get to see it in LA. It's definitely fascinating to watch the two films edited together, although I wouldn't say it's particularly mind-blowingly altered.

    by Tristan

The Bride's little monologue to camera while in the car at the start of KB2. Always makes me cringe. I did hear about the Japanese cinema release that featured both films edited together and without the B&W sequences at the House of Leaves. If that was done to tone down the blood colour content, then the decision was lame and affects the scene badly. Interesting to note that Scorsese had to colour correct the last sequence in Taxi Driver so the blood wasn't so bold in its colour. Some things never change.

Man, them be some awesome films. I read somewhere that KB:TWBA does indeed add an extention to the O-Ren anime sgement, but until it gets a screening, who knows? And QT's new project intrigues...

If you think you like films...

    by AndoSoundsLikeAMong

And you don't own a Blu-Ray player, then you don't actually like films that much. I've had one for years (PS3) and even now I can still put a disc in and be amazed at the quality. I'm not saying buy all your back catalogue stuff again - although I loved the quality, I still didn't buy much for a long time just because there wasn't much around. But all new films now come out on Blu-Ray as well. It's pretty crazy. I've spent a larger chunk of my life in the cinema than most people - 3-4 films per week for 6+ years, at one point - and it has allowed me to develop a skill I call "cinema experience." I'm sure some of you have it too. It is allows you to watch something while not actually being in a cinema, but get a feeling as to what it would be like to do so. With Blu-Ray, this advanced movie lover technique gets such a boost that I may never need to go to the cinema again. Well, it salves the wounds of living in Japan. There's nothing more painful than following US movie scene but living with Japanese release dates. I often get the US BRs for stuff before they have even been on in theatres here. Anyway. Short version. Buy a Blu-Ray player.

Indulgence does not exist in this dojo

    by Cobra--Kai

I've always thought there's a brilliant film within the two KILL BILL's just waiting to be brought out by an editor.<p> As they are... they were simply too indulgent for me. Over long sequences and over blown melodrama, which simply didn't fit in with the core plot's lean mean simple revenge tale. We didn't need six minutes of Daryl Hannah walking down a corridor. We didn't need 4 min 30 of Uma walking across a church.<p> I know some bright spark will say 'yeah but Cobra Sergio Leone did it'. And yes he did, and obviously QT is apeing him, but it simply didn't work in the KILL BILL movies. Daryl Hannah as the eyepatched nurse taking forever to walk down a corridor didnt have a decent pay off, Charles Bronson arriving and killing the guys at the train station did.<p> I would love to see the Weinsteins hold a gun to QT's head and say bring both these movies in at a combined 2 hours. I think the result would be far more kick ass and true to the grindhouse tradition than what we got.

    Cowboy Bebop

    by vadakinX

I know someone else has it, I know Keanu Reeves is set to star in it, but if Tarantino ever wanted to do a sci-fi adaptation of any sort I think Cowboy Bebop would perfectly compliment his sensibilities.

I want QT to make a real, hard-ass Spaghetti Western..

    by kidicarus

Westerns don't take place in the fucking South, that's why they're called Westerns, they take place right here, goddammit. Hell, make it about John Wesley Hardin, one of the cruelest gunslingers who ever lived, who once killed a man for SNORING. Film here in El Paso, I'll volunteer as historical consultant.

  • Feb. 26, 2011, 3:03 p.m. CST

I am writing a HARDIN WESTERN... Along with a 400 - 600 treatment for another WESTERN... At 200 pages of 370 pages I have written.

Doesn't QT have a SCREENPLAY called the SOUTHERNER? I actually am writing 9 WESTERN screenplays must be ROLAND and THE DARK TOWER series in the back of my head.... when I'm done with the current one I'm going to cut a piece of GRANITE and but the SCREENPLAY in it an place it in my GRANDFATHERS grave site....

I'm hoping my 3 - 6 horror screenplays eventually become GRINDHOUSE films... I've been so entrenched in my WESTERNS I haven't got all of my contacts together for my LAWYER yet.

As for the Darryl Hannah tracking shot in the hallway...

    by jimmy rabbitte

It has been widely known that QT was actually "aping" Brian DePalma with that shot. I do agree that, overall, he was definitely sending up Sergio Leone, to a lesser extent in Part I and rather blatantly in Part II.<p>

    I've got a foot fetish...

    by KHjLL

I think I got it working at KINGS INN ON THE LAKE when I worked at the CINEMA the same time FOOT fetish shoe fetish what ever you want to call it.

  • ...and I love it. Unlike my originals, it combines the 2 movies into one, has the terrific full-color Crazy 88 fight (which I only seen in unsatisfying black and white before), has an extended anime scene, and includes the deleted scene of Bill kicking ass. It was released in high quality with a 5.1 soundtrack, and I've never watched the originals since! If a re-cut by Quentin is in fact getting closer to a Blu-ray release, then it's not before time, and I'll certainly be interested to see how it compares to QtheGaijen's edit. In the meantime, it's my definitive version of almost 4 continuous hours of goodness!

"Deathproof" was better than "Jackie Brown".

    by Elgyn6655321

Yeah, that`s right. I said it. "Deathproof" was just like the '70s/early `80s exploitation stuff it was trying to emulate. Yes, the talking scenes were kind of pointless and took up too much time. Yes, it takes way too long to get going......JUST LIKE the movies it was paying tribute to!! The only really good thing about "Jackie Brown" was Pam Grier. Now that movie I feel truly was too talky and took forever to get going.
