Mondo Tees' New Poster Can Whistle 'Turkey In The Straw' while Eating Cheese!

Hey folks, Harry here...

Got an email from the Drafthouse / Mondo Tees team last night asking if I would like to debut their next print, I automatically said yes - before I even knew what it was... but once I heard the subject matter - the geek in me squealed with delight.

Yesterday was indeed an extraordinary day.   I've begun to become independently mobile.   The legs can get me to a standing position independently of anybody's aid...   My producing projects, all 4 of the ones in a state of development took the next step yesterday.   (I'll share at some point soon) and then... the big one...  I pulled my own pants up, ala Dick Powell in MURDER MY SWEET...    BUT - this poster - hints at possible things to come...

The idea of MONDO teaming up with Walt Disney to create posters, which of course HAS to start with the Cartoon below...   But - who knows what the future may hold, but man...   the potential with MONDO and DISNEY...  my god - 20,000 LEAGUES, CHERNABOG...  the artists in their roster...  whew.

Yup - STEAMBOAT WILLIE - that brilliant debut of Mickey Mouse (the first released, but technically not the first animated) that was animated by UB Iwerks and featuring the voice of Walt Disney as Mickey Mouse himself.   Walt decided to debut Mickey with the advent of sound - and that sly decision resulted in pure brilliance.  Almost instantly Mickey Mouse became a world wide sensation.

When I responded to the email  - I stated I wanted to see the poster immediately as I'm a huge fan of Iwerks & Disney...  and when I saw Iwerks properly credited upon the poster - my love of Mondo expanded.  That it was a satiric rip on the great Buster Keaton's STEAMBOAT BILL JR, further enhances my love of this first Mickey cartoon.

So his eyes became his forehead?

    by Drath

It's always weird to me to recognize classic Mickey's eyes are what is now his forehead. This is one strange choice to change that, even though it is the way I and everyone sees him now. Beautiful poster BTW, makes me sad to think of how far Disney has drifted from classical animation though.

Disagree about Epic Mickey...damn good game

    by FeralAngel

So, it's not as extreme as rumored, big deal. It's still one of the oddest, most lavish, most amazing-looking games ever created. The storyline kicks ass and is better than most actual Disney films of recent memory. You actually CARE about Mickey and his long-lost "brother" Oswald the Lucky Rabbit as characters, not just as vg icons that piss you off if they fall off cliffs because that means *you* lose a life or a star or something. You care about the journey so much that it kills you when "Mickey" dies. Seriously. And the game's soundtrack is effing amazing. John Williams would drool listening to it. Yeah, the camera can be challenging (to put it mildly) at first, but once you get the hang of it it's gravy. I hope there's a sequel. Next to Kirby's Epic Yarn, the best game of 2010.

  • Feb. 27, 2011, 3:41 p.m. CST

Early Mickey was typical of the silent-cartoon era

    by FeralAngel

Meaning, he could be a mean little shit. Sometime after the Steamboat Willie release, Uncle Walt decided to tone down Mickey a tad, making him more of a put-upon underdog rather than a sadist looking for trouble (a similar path taken by the creators of Bugs Bunny, by the way). Once he was "modernized" (given whites in his eyes and more conservative clothing) he lost the last vestige of his scrappy demeanor. Fortunately, Epic Mickey goes a long way towards restoring it. If you ask me, the new Walt Disney isn't John Lasseter, it's Warren Spector.
