The GLADIATOR trailer seems to be out there in the world.
Hey folks, I got this in from Pasadena, and I'm dying to see this trailer. I've heard so much great word of mouth on the movie that I'm now really excited about this. Inevitably, the trailer will most likely be going out with GALAXY QUEST here soon. (BTW... to all the folks believing that the movie has been delayed into next year... I'm scheduled to be seeing the movie to discuss the film with Roger Ebert for the Christmas Day show of ROGER EBERT AND THE MOVIES) Hopefully, the trailer will be attached to the print. Folks... keep an eye out for it online, I'm hoping for a great Quicktime big screen trailer.
It's on a print at the UA Old Town Pasadena, CA before The Green Mile. When it
screened the audience was so quiet afterwards, you could hear a pin drop. This
is now my #1 must-see movie. It was just breathtaking - the visuals, the music,
everything. In fact the sequences in the Colliseum with the gladiator battles
(and a few in particular with a tiger) was on the level of awe-inspiring. I
wanted more. I loved Ridley Scott before, but this one doesn't look like
anything else I've seen him do before. I can't say anymore except run to the
theater now to catch it.

I'm a masive sci-fi fan, but i've recently been disheartened by the quality of recent sci-fi "block-busters" It seems that the only justification for a director to have a budget around the $100 million mark, has been in a science fiction premise. Finaly there is a director with the clout and balls to look back apon not only film history, but also human history, and recreate a unique period with the increadible modern film making techniques.
Anyway one more thing, when oh when is someone going to make "consider Phlebas" by Ian M. Banks into the greatest movie ever made????? it's a simple question, why oh why don't I hear the answer? -
He has a wife you know...

The atomsphere Ridley created in Black Rain is superb, underrated film.
-
Fee Fi Fo Fum, i smell the art of an englishman!!!, Grrrr, the tiger will win an academy award!!
See what crack does to you? -
Let's be honest Mr Scott has often sacraficed a cohesive plot for syle. Here's hoping the balance is just right and then we can look forward to all those Italian sword and sandal rip offs like we had back in the early eighties!!! Oh Yeah!
-
I must say that if there is any one director that has had the most impact on me it is Ridley Scott. God, he really knows how to create an atmosphere, how to take you to another place that you never have visited before and probably never will. Blade Runner, Alien took us to futures that we probably could only have conjured up in our most terrifying, most exquisite dreams. Yet his greatness doesn't end there, Thelma and Louise is one of the great movies of this decade. Black Rain, let me tell you right now that Black Rain is one of those movies I could watch again and again just because of the atmosphere there, the feeling of desolate hopelessness you get in that movie, they could as well have been on another planet, although the story was kinda blurred I still love it. He had a couple of misfires with GI Jane and White Squall (both just feel like miscarriages, if you don't mind me saying so). But now, now he has a great script (as far as I've heard), he has the budget, the inspiration, the composer (Ridley Scott and Hans Zimmer can never, NEVER go wrong, I'm telling you this soundtrack will be great, they're a match made in heaven, Thelma and Louise and Black Rain stand as evidence to this), the actors (Bud White has gone from LA to Rome! Its also attatched to the Greenmile print playing at the Mann Bruin. The tag line, "SUMMER, 2000 A.D. elicited some laughs (the good, this is going to be fun type of laugh)

I really am looking forward to this. I think Ridley Scott is one of the best directors working today, I can even forgive him for Legend (Only just mind). Russell Crowe is possibly the best actor working today and really deserves our praise. He is the king of indy art films and combines that with a healthy commercial sucess in a way that Depp can only dream about. Romper Stomper and LA Confidential prove that Crowe can do both with superb talent and ease.

We haven't had a historical epic for way too long. All the good ones - Ben-Hur, The Ten Commandments, Spartacus, Cleopatra (I know that one bombed, but I still like it) - were made thirty years ago. Braveheart just looks shit and insubstantial in comparison. I'm really looking forward to Gladiator, but I hope it has the substance, and not just the running time, of an epic. Oh well, whatever happens I'm sure it'll look great. Remember the most recent version of The Mummy? It wasn't too great a film, but the opening shot of ancient Egypt was exciting in its scale, and shows the kind of things we're now capable of if we mix big sets and CGI. Oh, and Gladiator's Oliver Reed's last film! Oliver Reed is GOD. He is so good. When he died, the former actor Glenda Jackson said 'Drinking problem? Oliver Reed didn't have a problem with drinking - he loved it!'
-
Whoohoo! I'm going to see the Green Mile there anyway!
-
ok, I admit, I'm a newbie, but dang, how the heck does talk back order itself? its almost random....
-
I strongly disagree with Dirtfish, Legend is my favourite movie. If you don't like fairy tale fantasy then steer well clear, but if you want to see the most amazing cinematography ever then this is the one. It's a work of art. I'd love to see it restored to it's full running time

Incontinea...What is so funny!??

Incontinea...Stop it! What is so funny??...

I really want to like this movie, but I don't want to get to excited after seeing a few of Ridley's recent works. Obviously Alien and Blade Runner fill me with hope that he has the ability to make an incredible film. Films like GI Jane and White Squall seem so light weight in compassion. Other dirctors that I have routed for and been hugely disappointed...Coppola, Lucas, DePalma. The ones that have come through lately...Mallick, Spielberg, Weir, Cohen Bros, Scorsese. People change over 20 years. I still wish him the best.
-
Gee, thanks Harry, for deleting the joke. Now, there's only the punchline. Go watch Porco Rosso with the alternate ending.
-
Gee, thanks Harry, the joke is still there. I'm on crack, I guess. Brain cells have malfuctioned like Robby the Robot. Whoops! Sorry, 'bout that! I would like to see that alternate ending of Porco Rosso where he flies into a Farmer John meat factory and is turned into bacon.
-
Amen, Mickey Finn! The epic film is a genre in American cinema that deserves preservation. Yeah, yeah, the acting is usually pretty cheesy, but that's all part of the package! Yul Brynner as Ramses in The Ten Commandments is one of the best performances ever captured on film. Sure it's over the top. That's the point. I can't wait to see if Gladiator can overthrow Spartacus as the best gladiator movie ever made. In my opinion, Spartacus is Kubrick's second best film next to Dr. Strangelove. As long as you can get past Olivier's hambone "I am EVIL!" scenery chewing and Tony Curtis' accent("I love you, Spahdacuss, as I loved my own fadduh..."), and as long as you fast forward through all of the marching, Spartacus is a fantastic flick! Scott's got some big Roman sandals to fill!
-
Alien, Blade Runner, Black Rain and now it sounds as if I can add one more to my favorites list!!!
Too Cool........ -
This and Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? are my 2 most anticipated live action movies of 2000. I love the old style epics, and hope that more are on the way. But I just hope Gladiator doesn't disappoint like The Messenger did. Hey Dirtfish, looked at a box office chart lately? Depp is the one with a commercial hit, while The Insider has bombed in a big way.
-
All I have to say is 1492:Conquest Of Paradise to point out that his last THREE movies sucked big time. I too was a big fan but quoting Janet 'What Have You Done For Me Lately?'. Some directors reach a point where inspiration has left the stadium (colliseum stadium that is).
-
I was totally unprepared and caught off guard. Russel Crowe looks sooooo cool in it. It looks huuuuuge, a real spectacle! The set and costumes look amazing. But for my money, the real draw was Crowe - -HE LOOKS SO BAD-ASS! When my girlfriend saw him, she commented on how strong and muscular he looked! Despite this, I still love him! :)
Can't wait! -
I hope so. Russell Crowe is a great piece of casting and this looks like it could be good. Roman Gladiators........ could the message be as powerful as Bladerunner.....human slavery and all that.
-
After seeing this masterpiece for the 3rd time, I can categorically say that this movie is a masterpiece!!!! So this gladiator thing better be worth the wait. That's all.
-
...then Ridely's track record would be perfect. Yeah, Black Rain hard some problems but, it did have the Yakuza.

Hello all. It was I who sent in the review of this trailer to H
by dennis
You know, I had a really hard time putting into words what I saw on the screen. As an afterthought, I realize I held my breath through most of it. I wish more people had seen it, because I have a couple of questions: 1) I'd like to know if the accompanying music was original, or pilfered from some other movie, because it went so well with the trailer, 2) what kind of film/effect was used in the scene with the tiger in the arena? It looked 3-D, almost Matrix-y without the 360 rotation...I wonder if he's going to apply that technology during those sequences? That would be really different in a period movie... 3) I was surprised there was no Laeticia Kastia (sp?) in the trailer? You'd think they'd try to capitalize on her hot bod. This is by far the best TRAILER of the year, and here's hoping it's one of the best movies.
-
When I was a kid, and I saw those unicorns run through the stream with that soundtrack playing, I thought I would die! Something from my imagination had faithfully come to life before my eyes, something that was pure and beautiful, just as Scott had intended it to be. And Curry's makeup was UNBELIEVABLE! His ugly mug wasn't even recognizable. It was just pure fairytale, and one of the most unbelievably magical movies of all time. I even like the soundtrack, and yes I own it and am not afraid to admit it.
-
In no particular order: 1.) Pearl Harbor 2.) MI2 3.) And an Adam Sandler movie...I saw the trailer for Gladiator, and the tiger looks soooo fake...it needs work.
-
There is another review of this posted on Corona, who says that the scenes with the tigers were CGI and were crap. Now, I picked up the CGI on the exterior of the colliseum, but the tigers did NOT seem CGI to me. Can anyone tell me what they thought? It seemed they used a different type of film speed to shoot the sequence in, but maybe I just didn't pick the FX up...I still think it looked great, though. He also said he couldn't tell if they were tigers or lions, which is pretty moronic, as LIONS DON'T HAVE STRIPES! He sounded like a "studio" reviewer, if you know what I mean -- he didn't even bother to comment on the rest of the trailer, just slammed on the tigers!
-
Hey fellow Pasadenan! I also saw the trailer at the UA before Green Mile on Friday night (9:10 show, was that yours too?)and was tripping out within about a second of realizing what I was seeing. If I remember correctly, the music with the trailer was not original, it's from something else which I placed in the theater and now can't remember. It did work great with the trailer though. I have no idea what they used in those shots with the tiger, but I am dying to know because it looks incredible. My friend, who before was not nearly as psyched for this movie as I am (probably cause he doesn't worship at the altar of Russell Crowe, like me) is now totally excited about it on the basis of those tiger shots alone. I haven't even told him about Laetitia Casta yet. I'm sure they will cut a second trailer in the spring, closer to the film's release, with plenty of shots of Laetitia's ample cleavage for the male demographic out there. god, I hope she's not TOO terrible an actress. Anyway, I have always been a big fan of Ridley Scott's (Blade Runner being one of the greatest movies ever, IMHO, and I even like Legend) but he's certainly had some miscues of late, and don't even get me started on 1492-ugh. I think the planets have finally aligned correctly for this movie though - if that trailer is ANY indication, this movie is going to be one spectacular summer ride. (PS - Hey, did you think that Leo looked like an idiot yelling "I will not be killed today!" in that trailer for The Beach? Yeesh!)
-
Tigers come from India and lions come from Africa last time I remembered. Maybe they used both. The Romans could have established a trade route with India so the tiger is possible.

Nope, I caught the 5:00 PM show on Sunday. You know what? I totally forgot about The Beach trailer! I have to give DiCaprio credit for taking a risk by doing this film. To be honest, the premise is sort of interesting, but seems a bit far-fetched. And the romance seemed a little out of place in what looked very much like a sort of Lord-Of-The-Flies action flik. I also didn't like the MTV-style way in which the trailer was cut. Still, it does seem like a departure from most of the other films coming out this year, so I might give it a shot after I hear some word-of-mouth. Onto GLADIATOR: Well, I'm glad someone liked those tiger shots as well! Russell Crowe looked like such a bad#$$!!! I love Ridley Scott, but admittedly, I've only seen Aliens, Legend, Bladerunner (one of my all time faves! C'mon, lighten up Harry!), G.I. Jane (interesting premise, bad casting and dialogue), and Thelma&Louise. So I haven't seen all the man's films, which is why I VERY CAREFULLY worded my review, to say of all the films I've SEEN, so people couldn't call me on it. I've seen shots of 1492, and I suspected that maybe the lighting from Gladiator may look similar to that film, but I wasn't sure, since his films tend to be dark. Still haven't seen The Insider, but based on what I've heard, it seems Russell Crowe is shaping up to be one hell of an actor! I can't wait to see how he does in this film. I also thought that Joaquin as Commodus was an interesting choice -- the guy looks like he was born to play a tyrant!
-
GLADIATOR played great (the womens love that Russell Crowe!)
The teaser for THE PERFECT STORM got a tremendous reaction and poor little Leo is suffering through TITANIC backlash--THE BEACH got booed off the screen. -
I'm SO jealous of the guy who got to see The Perfect Storm trailer. Damn I'm looking forward to that movie. Anyway, Dennis, that's a good call on the lighting for Gladiator looking like 1492, it didn't occur to me till you said it but I bet you're right. Lots of slanting sunlight, faces in shadow next to blazing fires, that sort of thing. On the subject of the tigers, I personally thought they were CGI but I'm certainly no FX expert either. Unlike the guy at Corona, I thought they were good CGI. I don't know why Joaquin is so attracted to these dark roles - he's supposed to be playing the Inquisitor who tries the Marquis de Sade in Kate Winslet's next movie, Quills. He does have the face for evil though. Yer right about that Beach trailer too - it was like: ok, here's the plot, now all of a sudden here's Leo kissing this hot chick, now we'll return you to the sinister action-adventure trailer already in progress. I think he's a great actor and maybe this role will be a stretch for him, but I think he should stay away from roles that require him to run around half-naked, gorgeous and tan for awhile, or people are going to forget he ever could act. I just saw your Legend post (this talkback order is SOOO screwed up) - I was just wondering if you ever saw the Japanese import laserdisc that had Jerry Goldsmith's original soundtrack on it? No disrespect to Tangerine Dream, but the unicorn scene and the scene where Mia Sara dances with that shadowy figure are even MORE like childhood dreams made real with that music in the background. I think people's big problem with Tim Curry in that movie is that his horns...bounce when he moves his head too vigorously. It's kinda distracting.
-
Saw Gladiator a few months ago and I hope for the final completed trailer, the marketing dept will not give away the whole movie and all it's spectacular images! The less you see from the trailers, the more this movie will rock you! Gladiator totally took me by balls and by the time the movie was done, I was creaming twinkies all over the place! Russell Crowe is so goooood in it! So is the whole cast! I hope they don't cut any of the gore, blood splattering head exploding, skin ripping, eye ball bursting images that made the movie so great! That is what Gladiator will do to us in 2000, make us scream in mercy for more!!!!
-
HAS ANYONE HERE SEEN THE PUKE-INDUCING OH SO CUTESY MAKE ME SICK COVER OF ENTERTAIMENT WEEKEND WITH GWENNIE AND MATT DAMON? GOD, IT MAKES ME WANT TO SEE 'RIPLEY' LESSER AND LESSER AND THE TRAILER FOR THAT IS overkill at this point, I SWEAR WATCHING PETREFIED GWYNETH SHIVERING AND FREAKING OUT IS CAUSING ME TO LAUGH OUT LOUD...
MATT AND GWENIE ARE LIKE THE NEW RICHARD GERE AND CINDY CRAWFORD...UGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH -

This guy is due for quite a comeback. My only question is, how is he going to get big clouds of fog to shine lights through inside the coliseum? No Scott Bros. film would be complete without that. I guess ol' Russell will have to kick up a lot of dust in there. After snagging an Oscar nom and/or victory, this is the perfect film for Crowe to do to make himself the superstar he deserves to be. When was the last time we had an actor who can do demented psycho roles, amazing character acting, real-life impersonations, and be an ass-kicking hulk, and a leading man that the ladies dig? Stallone? Yeah right. Arnold? Never. I really can't think of anyone else here. And to the guy who was whining about Matt & Gwyneth on the magazine cover: Jeez, it's called promotion. I spent about an hour on TalentedMrRipley.com, and there is a TON of cool shit on there about all the location shooting, the choice of music, the costumes. This is going to be a first-rate production and one of the year's best, mark my word. I will say that I hope Jude Law gets to share some of the spotlight. He's awesome. And did anyone see Gwyneth on Letterman last night? Her remark to Dave is the first time I've ever someone get the better of him where he had no good comeback. The audience was going nuts, Dave was blushing, and I soiled my shorts. (For those that didn't see it, this may not come across as funny on paper, but Dave was putting some kind of ear thermometer in Gwyn's ear, and he asked "Is it in yet?", to which she replied "Do you ask that question alot?")

Let's hope this film turns out the way the trailer shows.
It's a long time since we saw any "good" gladiator movies.
And for that matter a good Scott movie.
I hope that Scott returns to form for his next movie, hannibal!?
But until then i am afraid, very afraid.
Any good comments on the book send them : danthe1mancooldude@yahoo.com -
Not interested. What's the point of making a sequel? I heard the book it's based on is a pale imitation of the original. Why mess with a film with characters so widely respected, especially when it's agreed that the source material is not up to par? I agree with you 100% on your comments about The Beach trailer, Dagny-T, and also your comments about the horns in Legends (but I'm willing to overlook that tiny fault). I do hope that Gladiator is everything it looks to be. It's going to invite comparisons to Spartacus, of course, but it's high time Hollywood did a DeMille-style picture again. The last one we had was Prince Of Egypt, and that fell a little short.
-
The music used in the "Gladiator" trailer is from Basil Poledouris' AWESOME score of "Conan The Barbarian." The tigers in the trailer are NOT CGI. They are REAL. They appear to be a little "stroby" because of the way they were shot, most likely due to an unusual shutter angle -- the same camera technique used to energize many shots in "Saving Private Ryan." Having seen the entire movie I myself, I can honestly say that this teaser trailer barely even scratches the surface of how epic and entertaining "Gladiator" really is. I know some skeptics out there think that Ridley is "over the hill" or that he's all about style-over-substance. I truly hope that "Gladiator" surprises them with its wonderful performances (Russell Crowe kicks ass, Joaquin Phoenix is phenomenal and the late Oliver Reed makes a highly memorable swan song) and engaging script. And yes, there are some truly violent and exciting battles in it -- your bloodlust will be quenched. "Gladiator" is everything "The Phantom Menace" wishes it was -- a huge, epic spectacle with political intrigue and heartfelt characters. I can't wait to see it again...but for now, the trailer will do.
-
That sequence did not look CGI to me at all! The only CGI I caught that was obvious was the exterior of the Colliseum. Thanks a lot for the info. Would you mind going to Corona and providing that information, so the bad-mouther that posted their can be shut down once and for all?
-
"Gone in 60 Seconds" rules. I saw it before the Green Mile and people in the theater were applauding afterward. It has enough energy and style for several movies to split.
-
Cmon you people! I cant believe no one who saw the preview knew that was the Basil Poledouris score for Conan the Barbarian! Thats the 1st thing that got me outta my seat when the trailer started was the music, we were all going, wtf? this is conan music!
-
I wish that was the title of Bruckheimer's biography. Instead I'll have to settle for the fact that, undoubtably, the trailer is the best part about this film. Well, if Armageddon is any indication anyway. Anyone heard advanced word on this?
-
I saw the trailer too at the AMC Burbank in front of the Green Mile. And I went from being slightly leery of the whole thing to being hardly able to wait. Now that's a trailer.
But,dear lord, what is this I hear about Laeticia Casta?
Ugh.
-
The trailer is also attached to The Green Mile print (definitely the amphitheater one, not sure about the other)at the AMC 14 in Burbank. Looks kind of...daunting.
-
Zinema, you said ''yes, there are some truly violent and exciting battles in it -- your bloodlust will be quenched. "Gladiator" is everything "The Phantom Menace" wishes it was...''. Come on, you didn't expect Phantom Menace or any future Star Wars movies to be violent at that level. SW does not aspire to be R rated
-
Wonders, I urge you to read more carefully and refrain from quoting me out of context as you did. I didn't say that "Phantom Menace" was supposed to be violent as violent as "Gladiator" -- although it certainly could have benefitted from a more harrowing and graphic depiction of the "millions" of Naboo citizens who were supposedly being slaughtered -- I said that "Gladiator" successfully achieved what "Phantom Menace" failed to: "a huge, epic spectacle with political intrigue and heartfelt characters." The reference I made to it being violent was a completely seperate comment. I'm sorry if you confused the two different concepts. Let me boil it down even more: "Gladiator" GOOD. "Phantom Menace" BAD. Okay? All clear? Cool.
-
Nope... they're real. The unusual shutter angle theory is correct. BTW this film is about two and a half hours of the most stunning Cinematography I have ever seen. Great effects used in the proper way... to help in telling a hell of a great story, visually. Phoenix, Crowe and Reed are brilliant. A trailer that gave this movie away would need to be 150 minutes.

I can't wait!

Haven't seen the trailer yet, but looking forward to it. Somebody mentioned that Ridley's new movie has the look of '1492' (hard shadows, diffusion, coloured filters). The DOP on '1492' and 'Thelma and Louise' was Adrian Biddle (Who also shot 'Aliens'). Are Scott and Biddle back together on this one? Biddle complements Scott like Robert Richardson does with Oliver Stone, in my opinion.
-
John Mathieson is the D.P. on "Gladiator," not Adrian Biddle.
