The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day was exactly like me. A naked sword. It didn't stay in his sheath.
UPDATE: Once again, I've put my foot in my mouth. The picture is not from Seven Samurai, but another Kurosawa Masterpiece... either Sanjuro or Yojimbo. It was represented as Seven Samurai from my source and I stupidly didn't bother to double check.
I mean, that's definitely Toshiro Mifune in samurai garb, just the wrong garb to be from Seven Samurai. Looking at it more closely I'd say that's Sanjuro, but what do I know?
Thanks to eagle-eyed readers Ryan Gallagher and James Marsh for quickly spotting the error. I've edited the article and will now go fall on my sword to make amends.
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!
I am here today both incredibly happy and a little sheepish. Happy because Pee-Wee himself tweeted the link to yesterday’s picture to his (ample) Twitter follwers. Sheepish because the pic I promised yesterday isn’t exactly what you’re getting today.
I hate the smell of cigarette smoke, but guess what? If Toshiro Mifune blew smoke in my face (especially if he was in costume) I’d be nothing but smiles… bright, wide cancer-absorbing smiles.
Hope you guys enjoy the shot!
Tomorrow’s Behind the Scenes Pic will go in, through and beyond!

Forgive me, I know Die Hard has absolutely zero to do with this particular BTS pic, but I already emailed this link to Harry, I'm sure there's a .000001% chance at best he'd actually post it on the site, so I'm putting it in a Talkback. I've been into amateur editing as a hobby for a long time, and just got finished remaking my extended Die Hard trilogy music video (from the original I made back in the late 90's). http://vimeo.com/20176976 I chose to ignore Live Free Or Die Hard. thanks (though I'm sure nobody will be shy in informing me what a piece of shit it is lol)

Was it scanned from a textured paper photograph?

He (Toshiro Mifune) doesn't have the full beard until after Yojimbo (the bodyguard), so this looks like it is Sanjuro (thirty years old going on forty). These are some of the best movies ever made, and show Kurosawa at his best.

Sanjuro is the unsung masterpiece that gets overshadowed by Yojimbo. To be honest Sanjuro may be a better film.

As does everything else in this country arghhh
Judging from the other guy's costume, that's probably Hanbei (Tatsuya Nakadai), and here's a GIF of the famous last scene (spoiler): http://tinyurl.com/6z4ahnm

Normally I'd say cool, way cool; but, I refuse to get my hopes up since Quint has a long history in this column of mis-using the wrong quotes with the wrong movie. I'd give it even odds it'll be a picture from a totally different film and Quint will claim he forgot about the obvious reference.

... in SEVEN SAMURAI, not an actual samurai. Didn't you know that? Basic film school stuff here.

watched it last week
Feb. 21, 2011, 12:36 a.m. CST
Because that's definitely Tatsuya Nakadai. And yes, I agree, Sanjuro is superior to Yojimbo.
Feb. 21, 2011, 12:37 a.m. CST
Look, it's Thomas Edison!
Feb. 21, 2011, 12:39 a.m. CST
Nakadai is still acting. That's so fucking cool. In fact, he's in the new Zatoichi. God, all this talk about Kurosawa makes me want spend the next 12 hours watching his films. If only I weren't 800 miles away from my DVD collection. *sigh*

It's definitely Sanjuro.

Kurasawa was the master. So far I've seen 23 of his 30 films. Still looking for the other 7.

The best thing next to Italian cinema! Either way neither is worth a mention neither is "World CLass" Neither should be up for any American awards ie Globes oscars etc.. If Michael bay Had Optimus Punch Megatron in the jaw and the sound effect came after the fact yous would demand his head...Asians do it it`s first rate action!! Hold all to one level not each to their own! If nothing else at least these people can still make something original.. All we get now is rehashed bs and sequels!
Feb. 21, 2011, 7:04 a.m. CST
Went through unspeakable things in the pacific during the war. He's told me some of what he witnessed. Kurosawa is the reason he didn't die hating the japanese people. That's why he's my favorite filmmaker. His genius helped an old man forgive.

Not only that but considering you posted this with the previous day's BTS picture: "Tomorrow’s Behind the Scenes Pic features one of the best remakes of all time and one of the baddest badasses cinema has ever produced!" even if the photo HAD been from Seven Samurai how would that have fitted with it being "one of the best remakes of all time"???

I had the great honor of working with Mr. Mifune fresh out of high school. He brought me to Japan and gave me my first real professional experience. He was not only a very kind man but very imposing as well. He treated everyone with respect and generosity. I'm actually discussing a project with his son, Shiro, and it involves casting Mr. Mifune's grandson in a key part of my version of "Satomi Hakkenden", a very famous Japanese story. I miss Mr. Mifune and never got a chance to work with him on one of my movies. I did fly to Japan in 1991 to discuss his possibly appearing in my film, Nemesis.
