Shane Black to direct IRON MAN 3
-

-
glad to see the man working. (not that it'll get me to see IRON MAN 3, but shane black must consume nutrients)
-
"ya know... because of the echo"
-
These films have lacked a really compelling villain. So enough and just do it for the third film.
-
Black apparently has a rapport with RDJ, but Iron Man 2 was too filled with hipsterish, overwritten dialogue, characters talking over each other, constant interruptions. There was a little of this in Iron Man, but it was balanced with more heart and dread (in the early cave sequence, especially). I am imagining IM3 as being like Spider-Man 3: giggly envelope-pushing as the director and actors throw an endless amount of cutesy hipper-than-thou moments which overpower the story itself. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was a lot of fun, but that doesn't fit Iron Man. I hope Black can adapt.

Looking better and better.
And if Marvel is smart, they'll at LEAST let Black 'touch up' the script.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang validates everything this man does forever
by gautsid
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang completely blew me away when I saw it in theaters; saw it with very little buzz and utterly enjoyed it.
My 2nd favorite movie of the 2000's. -
Metal men fightng is gonna get boring sooner rather than later
-
and correct what fucked up Iron Man 2!
BTW, Harry did you review Iron Man 2??? -
I agree the villain needs to not have a metal suit(Mandarin). But this is great news. IM2 was a big step back but not the abortion most TBers make it out to be. The only thing I wonder about these Marvel sequels is how regular audiences will deal with this with The Avengers coming out. Will they be confused or just accept it. You know what fuck general audiences anyway I'm pumped!
-
It really friggin' DOES, doesn't it? I didn't hate what we'd seen up til now at all, but this new trailer has my attention for sure.
It looks epic and friggin' fun, to boot. Fingers crossed for a good summer movie season, superhero-wise. -
Fin Fang Foom on the big screen!
-
Good choice. He knows his action beats, story and dialogue. Hope he brings them all to the table.
Also hope that a new director means we'll see a change from the Iron Man goes up against another guy in a arc reactor powered metal suit/inventor story and takes the character into new territory (although I'm assuming Joss Whedon's Avengers already will have). -

If by "fantastic" you mean "just like a Saturday night Syfy movie" then,
by subtitles_off
yes, the Yahoo-exclusive trailer for THOR looks like that.
Who is Shane Black? -
Go Black go. And let he write the script.
I agree with Mandarin, Kilmer, and alcoholism.
-
Awesome new trailer, although I think they are showing to much. When you're sitting in the cinema you're going to be thinking "...why do I feel like I've seen this all beThor"
-
ESPECIALLY if he sports his giant dragon shorts!
I'm hopin' Marvel is slowly building to more and more insane things. They've been pretty grounded so far, and Thor's gonna open things up a bit, cosmically speaking.
I think The Avengers is gonna be a pretty good indicator of just how big and crazy they'll want to go. Kree/Skrulls, please.
-
If in doubt, ask yourself "what would gay perry do?".
-
Are we really worried about this guy? His pedigree as a writer:
1987: Lethal Weapon
1987: The Monster Squad
1991: The Last Boy Scout
1993: Last Action Hero
1996: The Long Kiss Goodnight
2005: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Now his directing resume may be short, but Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was visually stylish and had great performances. The action and special effects in Iron Man 3 will largely be driven by fight choreographers and the visual effects teams.
I just hope his visual effects sensibilities lean as far towards realism as did Jon Favreau's.
-

Nobody saw Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.....get over yourselves
by punisherthunder
Val Kilmer hasn't been relevant in anything for at least 20 years.
But Shane Black should be good though. -
How does that Thor trailer look cheap?Compared to what? Everything about it looks better than Captain America or pretty much any of the recent superhero movies. Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins. Great production design. Quality director. Not hyper-edited. No rock music. I don't know a thing about the Thor comic, but this is the best looking comic book trailer in a long time.
-
I am fairly shocked and anticipatory.

any movie that portrays testicular torture, it's just not acceptable.
Particularly since it's always supposed to be funny (whereas the sexual assault of a woman has never been played for laughs in mainstream cinema to my knowledge).
At least Casino Royale made it actually brutal and Bond's jokes were just the last defenses of an agonized individual. -

See this is why I have God issues. His life just corrected itself and in a big way. He was on his way to a life that some can only dream about.
No one would call him worthless or a bum or a junky. He wouldnt have to pan handle for food or fight for shelter to sleep to stay out of the cold or the rain. He wouldnt have to defend his stuff from other homeless people.

I'm happy Shane is the director, but I'm more interested in The Avengers
by aftermath
IMO, Iron Man 2 was so boring and disappointing (except, for the race track scene and the robot battle at the end), that I'd rather want to see The Avengers, before Iron Man 3.
Hopefully, Shane and the writers will make a much more, entertaining and action-packed film, than Iron Man 2.
Keep Cheadle\War Machine and most importantly, MORE scenes with Iron Man! RDJ is fantastic, as Tony Stark, but Iron Man 2 didn't have that many scenes, involving Iron Man and when Iron Man was on screen, the screen-time was so short!
-
This is great news! After the suck-ass Iron Man 2, I have renewed hope in this series (I despise the word franchise).
-
I liked both Iron Man and last year's sequel that everyone seems to hate.
But a new director is not a horrible idea for the third one. As long as he keeps a similar enough style to the first two while adding new elements and ideas, then I say go for it. -
I have no fucking clue who this guy is.
-
This is a Shane Black/Iron Man 3 talkback. And the Golden Voice is not dead. Get it together.
-
Really? I mean I guess it's neat that he's directing, but does anyone really care if he's not also writing?

"Oh, The Mandarin here has forgotten more about dispensing pain than you or I will ever know."
Great news about Shane Black! Now get Alejandro Jodorowsky for "Dr. Strange" and Neil LaBute to reboot "Howard the Duck." -
Please, Shane, give Tony a villain smarter and more powerful than he is, with access to realities that Tony can just barely imagine. Don't do Mandarin as magic, though..go the Thor route, and give us quantum manipulation through a human interface (aka a brain); that's what people want now. And give Tony serious personal problems: Pepper *must* walk out on him this time, and he has to win her back. For laughs, make him rather like the Hulk, rather than mindlessly fight him like the comics. Having to deal with an even bigger baby than himself will be good for Tony, and for the audience.
-
Joss Wheden, Kenneth Branagh, John Favreau, Shane Black... say what you will about these Marvel movies, but you can't accuse them of getting in people that appeal to the lowest common denominator like say Michael Bay and those Transformers/Star Trek hacks.

...and they need to be in THE AVENGERS,as it was written,so shall it be!
-
Anyone know?
-
I don't know if there's been a better combination of director and film in the last decade. This is perfect. KKBB is one of the best films in recent years. It's endlessly watchable and has my favorite performance from Downey Jr. and Kilmer.
-
If the iron man series isn't the epitome of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang philosophy, I'll be downey Jr.'s lonely heroin needle. THE TRUE SEQUEL from the man too good to write sequels to his masterpieces a la Lethal Weapon (just a story credit on 2) and Last Boy Scout!!!! Marvel really doesn't fail to impress with these outside-of-the-box director picks; they are making money by being smart and stepping up to DC and WB's Nolanverse with the talent they surround their films with. If only they were better at NURTURING it. Great news not only of a new Shane Black movie but that it is IRON MAN 3 with his muse DOWNEY

I'm excited for Iron Man 3 though, along with Green Lantern, Batman 3, Avengers, Captain America & Thor. Lots of great stuff coming out, I just hope that it really is good.
-
Black will do good! IM3 will be interesting considering it will follow The Avengers movie. Why not just call your Super Friends if things get tough?
And the Might of Thor* will open up for the Magic of the Mandarin (I bet it will be a mix of science and magic like in Thor).
*Might of Thor as seen in the new awesome trailer.
-
Everything about it misfired. There was the potential of one great scene with the Howard Stark bit, but they even ruined that with a ridiculous gimmick. Terrible film.
And I loved the first Iron Man. It hit every note just right. -
I mean I;ve always loved the guy...but he's feeling sort of...overexposed....same ol' shit all the time....even due date (sucked)...felt like the same old thing from him....chaplin was great...but now it just feels like him playing himself.

the 1st one had a certain fun about it...2 did lack that,,,,but i thought it was ok...it didnt "suck"
-
I'd read that Black was supposed to write the script for (and possibly direct) a new Doc Savage film.
So I guess that's out the window now... We're stuck with the shitty 1975 Doc Savage flick until who knows when.
Damn it. -
as an educated movie fan, I LOVE this decision. I only worry that Black's true R-rated vision will be diluted to PG-13 ala Die Hard 4. Hopefully we get a R rated IRON MAN 3.
-
I liked Kiss Kiss as much as the next asshole talkbacker. And I think Black is a talented dude.
However,I dont think Disney is interested in making a good 3rd. I think they're interested in making another-one-on-the-cheap. -

Then the goddamn director of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang can make Iron Man 3!
What we need from Iron Man is some good old fashioned testosterone. That is what Black is going to bring to the table. Sure, he'll write a script that perfectly focuses Downey's comedy strengths, but it's the bad ass motherfucking action that is what will make Iron Man 3 head and shoulders above the first 2.
I hate to compare Iron Man to Harry Potter, but hiring Black for Iron Man 3 is like hiring Cauron for Harry Potter 3. He's going to finally breath life into a stale franchise that is bursting with potential to be great.

Not that no name commercial director. Why the fuuuuck don't we treat our most beloved action franchise the way it deserves to be treated???????????
-
Me like.
-
"Nah, I'm knee deep in the gold-titanium alloy. I just love the name so much I can't get rid of it."
-
RDJ and Black: a match made in haven.
-
It's because of Black's writing, not his direction. You remember the constant snappy dialogue from that movie, not the brilliantly directed scenes. If he gets to 'tidy up' the screenplay then this could be something special.
-
I think they should have called it "Iron Man: Business As Usual"
It just played like an average week at a large corporation when you have a crazy guy like Tony Stark running it.
It worked really well and I prefered it to the first movie.
The only issue was the under use of Rourke.
-
Excellent news indeed. I'm pretty sure Black, will give Iron Man a shot of fresh energy. Very cool news.
-
That RDJ didn't really move the character any further along. IM1 was a fresh, surprising take on a superhero flick & by IM2 Downey's take already felt old.
-
This is about as absurd as Brian Dennehy playing Kublai Khan in MARCO POLO or the actor who portrayed Charlie Chan in the serials. What retard thought of Kilmer as Mandarin? Go out and beat him now.
-
Now let's get this straight. I don't really understand that Iron Man 2 hatred. In my humble opinion it was much better than the first movie, altough I loved both films. But the second one has more action, better story and better dialogues. What's not to like? Anyway, I love the fact that Shane Black is gonna direct the third one. Shane Black is fuckin' great and KKBB is one of the funniest flick of the last decade.
-
The criminal group in the first movie was called The Ten Rings, the guy that kidnaps Tony Starks even rubs a ring, before he's killed by Stane. I'm sure Favs would've continued this into IM2, but Marvel got all Avengers-mode & raped it of a storyline that would've been Iron Man-only. Marvel & Mr. Black need to correct this, not just have the same bad guy with the same motive in IM3. Justin Hammer=Obidiah Stane, they both wanted Tony's tech, that was about it for motivation......weak!!! They need to go back to the first hour of IM1 and then go from there.
-
But, given when he was created, and the world politics of that day, he'll need to be reworked some to avoid being a cartoon villain in the 21st century. I'll keep paws crossed. Loved IRON MAN 2, but the secondary villain was the weak point of that film. Hammer came across as a petulant, whining brat, rather than the quietly dangerous, behind-the-scenes mastermind the character was in the comics.
-
Simply the best choice. What a great match to material and director. I'm sure RDJ would have had his say on this and I'm pleased for Shane Black.
-
Hokeywood does have a habit of getting the actor wrong for a specific ethnicity. Look at the 1978 DR STRANGE TV movie. It showed potential (Jessica Walters as Morgan le Fey? Lust!) but, come on, Sir John Mills as the Ancient One?! Whose demented idea was that? He's a terrific actor, but a wizened Chinese sage he isn't.
-
I used to be the biggest Marvel fan and still like some of their comics. But fuck their films man. They only seem to care about making their films as cheap as possible. Which is the only reason shane black got the job. The guy has never directed a biog movie before. Hell he has only directed one (fun but overrated)film in his life and that's about the only thing he's done for the last ten years. How is he a perfect choice. But shane black isn't even the problem it's fucking Marvel, every good marvel film like Iron Man(actually come to think of it, that is the only good one so far. Coming from their own studio. And don't give me that crap about Norton's Hulk, that was terrible and not a patch on Ang Lee's film. which was quite flawed in itself) is good despite marvels efforts to ruin everything. I've been mean on Jon Favreau before in these talkbacks. But looking back, the guy's great and it's a miracle what he accomplished with Iron Man. The disaster that was Iron Man 2 would probably have been worse if it wasn't for Favreau. Looking forward Cowboys & aliens, Thor and Cap America, not really.
-
And it really doesn't matter if he writes the script or not. As long as he does a dialogue polish before shooting begins, I think most will be happy. Looking forward to this one.
-
Danny Glover as War Machine.
-
And this has made my day.
Good call, Marvel.
Now, can someone on here PLEASE send me his unproduced LW: PLAY DIRTY script?! -
He just had work done atthe dentist and he still showed up despite being in agony. He was a really nice guy.
-
Helluva screenwriter. I trust his screenplays foreshadow that he has a good eye as a director. Er...but Goyer is a great screenwriter, and his directing sucks...so I don't know. I could be wrong - but it's Shane Fucking Black, yo. The guy is ace in my book.
-
You really have to be a fan of the comics. Oh what the hell, this movie will just plain stink!
The costume looks horrible, too many liberties were taken with the characters and the plot will lurch forward badly.
Here's how it will probably go down: It will basically start out with a few minutes in one place, a few minutes in another, a few more elsewhere, etc. You get the idea, and then all these separate incidents gradually and slowly lead to one single plot. MST3K's Pod People was easier to follow!
Maybe a few good things about this: Robert Downey, Jr. looks enough like Tony Stark should, but will be hampered by the lousy script and implausible plot. The culture shock he has returning home after too many years might be done fairly well, and the possible Mandarin description reminds me of a cross between Freddie Kruger and Jason Voorhees. This movie could have been so much better set entirely in WW2 with the opening scene of Hitler screaming at his generals, "I could make that bellboy a better leader than any of you !" That is from the mythos of the comic book.
After the opening credits, we should see the process of Stark becoming the hero who goes on to fight the Mandarin, who through most of the movie should be spoken of and referred to, but not seen. This movie will need that sort of impact, the indication of the sort of evil the Nazis represented, but as it is, it sounds like one big car wreck. -

Dear GOD. Please, whatever you do, do not let dumb asses talk Marvel or hollywood into adapting the Demon in a bottle storyline as its own film.
by mad_mike
Because it would be fucking depressing and no one wants to see an alcoholic loser of a superhero.
don't believe me?
I would like to enter into evidence the movie HANCOCK.
Seriously, I am glad that you guys can at least cite one storyline of Iron Man but shut the fuck up already. They already covered 75% of the ground from that story in the second film.
Seeing tony as an out of control boozed with self destructive tendancies was not fun. -
I mean let's face it, the guy has only one directing credit to his name...but been in Hollywood long than most of you have been alive.
I am sure that Downey sold them on the idea of Black after working with him on KKBB and maybe even backdoor developed it with him forcing Fatoror out.
I have no issue with the tone of the movies changing because as comic book teams change over...there are tonal shifts in content. Why can't the movies be the same.
Just don't suck. -
Credit to Marvel for making another unexpected (but good) choice for IM director.
-
My only worry is that Tony Stark is not an underdog. He's never been an underdog. I don't know how will RDJ write him. But he'll start out as a disgraced alcoholic who lost his company after Fury put his hands on the Iron Man tech seems like a good bet.
-
That's how all over this I am.
-
Or even parapalegic tony.
-
The Black Panther!
The Mandarin needs a little more cultivation but T'Challa could easily be introduced as a natural part of the story.
-
in getting great directors for these movies, now if only fox would magiclly give up all the crap they hold now...I want a good x-men movie...so much...by whedon...and a good wolverine flick
-
Is Perfect. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang Owned. This Is Gonna Be Great.
-
He played the villain in Shanghai Noon, who stabbed the dude in the throat with an oyster shell. A martial arts badass, who actually looks Chinese, with a decent acting resume.
-
Then Downey flies upside down over his cockpit and flips him the bird.
-
revoked
-
I feel like I'm not watching the same movie as everyone else... I thought it was great. Some of the action at the end was a little cartoonish, but Norton was perfect casting, Liv Tyler was great, and that opening scene in Brazil was, in my opinion, better and more original than almost anything in Iron Man. I loved Iron Man as well, I just thought the ending was underwhelming. I don't know if anyone watched the deleted scenes on the blu-ray, but some of them actually would have went a long way towards making it a more dramatic, serious movie. They were good scenes, some of which should never have been taken out.
