Verbinski Won't Make A BIOSHOCK Movie Unless It's 'R' Rated, So He Probably Won't Be Making A BIOSHOCK Movie...

Merrick here...

Every time we post any kind of news about Gore Verbinski, someone asks the question "What happened to his BIOSHOCK movie?"

And, it's a fair question.

News of Verbinski's involvement with a big-screen adaptation of the atmospheric video game franchise came to us 'round the same time we learned he would not be returning to direct a fourth PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN film (Rob Marshall is directing the forthcoming ON STRANGER TIDES instead).  Early on, there was much talk of this big-budget BIOSHOCK movie.  Then...nothing.  For a long while.   What the hell?

ComingSoon may've finally gotten an answer to this question.  In THIS conversation with the director, Verbinski discusses the obstacles he faced adapting a hard-R horror game into a visceral cinematic experience.

I couldn't really get past anybody that would spend the money that it would take to do it and keep an R rating," he explained, "Alternately, I wasn't really interested in pursuing a PG-13 version.

[EDIT]

I just wanted to really, really make it a movie where, four days later, you're still shivering and going, "Jesus Christ!"... It's a movie that has to be really, really scary..."

JUMP to the rest of CS' talk with Verbinski.  Essentially, sounds like a BIOSHOCK movie will only come our way if it's beaten into something kinder, gentler, safer, and probably far less interesting than Verbisnki's version would've been.  Which also means it would almost certainly come to us from someone other than Verbinski.

Thoughts?
