I usually despise them, but I have to admit that the casting is pretty decent.
-
Trailer for ARTHUR remake is up, compliments of @NordlingAICN ...
-
Too many remakes. Try something new for a change
-
...perfect performances. I have no desire to see any other version of it.
-
GABBA GABBA!
-
Is this a joke or are you retarded, Nordling?
-
I'm getting a different trailer, some Bunny thing, did you embed it correctly?
-
This trailer is for a cartoon called Big Buck Bunny

This is mockery of the Dudley Moore classic.
-
That's what I'd be thinking if I had any affiliation with AICN.
-
Nordling is retarded. He'll fit in perfectly at AICN. Maybe Nordling is Harry's nephew?
-
Arthur to hooker: "You're a prostitute? And I thought I was doing so well with you!" As for remakes, one studio executive said it succinctly: "we'll stop doing remakes when people stop buying tickets for them." The Market has spoken...
-
Looking at it right now. That's the right embed from the trailer link. Not sure why it's playing some other movie. here's the website I got the embed from: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/video/showbiz/film-biz/3404486/Arthur-Exclusive-Trailer.html?aid=3404486

Russell Brand is that rare combination of dirtbag and scumbag
by The Krypton Kid
Just looking at him makes me want to walk slowly through a scolding hot car wash.

A buck is a disassembled car
-
I refreshed the article, and the trailer's playing for me right now. What the hell is Big Buck Bunny?
-
Oh well. Still probably better than the Arthur trailer.
-
The trailer for BBB is probably better than Russell "how the fuck did he get onto a screen" Brand's shittyness anyway.
-
But is suspect the movie will be balls and ass.
-
You may decide for yourselves what I'm referring to.
-
The Sun. That explains the fuckery.
-
And with a hinky embed of the trailer code? Wacky!!!
-
just Buck the Bunny or something.
-
What was Helen Mirren and Luis Guzman thinking?
-
This film will TANK. Absolute pants.

(at work), so no audio. But to the best of my judgement
by openthepodbaydoorshal
it looks like Arthur has been PC'd to become a story about a spoiled rich man-child, who learns to be a man....whoa, how revolutionary.

You can clearly see him drinking at the end of the trailer...
by ArchangelM78
When he is wearing the Batman costume. It looks promising to me.
-
My thoughts exactly
-
Whatever that is, it looks hilarious.
-
Better than Open Range.
-
This is my challenge to Hollywood. Instead of turning gold into dreck, why not take real shit and turn it into something passable if you're so dead set on remaking movies?
-
Feb. 10, 2011, 1:36 p.m. CST
So, it is just me, or does Big Buck Bunny look like...
by WriteForTheEdit
...an affectionate tribute to Harry?
-
Or is it all a lot of loud grunts and squealing?
-
And why is it playing instead of arthur?
-
is the biggest pile of bull shit i have ever seen in my life.
-
Russell brand fighting off Jennifer Garner? Fuck off.
-
... the trailer you have here is for a short made with Blender software. The Arthur remake was a horrible idea to begin with. They should can it before the ruin the value of the original as well.
-
I think it looks pretty decent. I mean there is no way it's better then the original. But as far as remakes go it looks good.

"did they rewrite the film so that Arthur's not a drunk anymore?did they rewrite the film so that Arthur's not a drunk anymore?"

Looks like they rewrote it so that he's a rabbit (possibly a drunk rabbit, not sure, although he does seem a bit surly)

The original is a work of GENIUS! This is crap. I will not be seeing this. I didn't even crack a smile. They completely took every aspect of the original film away that made it what it was. IO had no interest in this before I saw this... now, I would actively campaign for people to NOT see it and FOR a re-release of the Original.
-
oh...you're a HEDGE!!
-
After finding the ARTHUR trailer on Yahoo, I think I prefer the bunny one. Moore's original version is one of my all-time favorite comedies; this looks like dung. For one thing, I couldn't tell the Garner from the Gerwig. In the original, there's a huge difference between Linda and Susan. Neither registers much in this trailer. Mirren as Hobson also looks like a misstep. I am curious to see Nick Nolte as Susan's brutish father. Not curious enough to PAY to see this travesty...
-
...from the original is when Arthur is having dinner with his arranged fiancee Susan. She says it would take a real woman to get his to quit drinking and Arthur says, "It would take a real big woman". I love that movie and like Nording, could quote the whole movie. The movie was well cast too, beyond the main stars, I loved Barney Martin as Minelli's sloppy, money hungry dad(you have my permission to marry him. Loved the scene where Minelli has too console her weeping dad after he learns her and Arthur have broken up. The problem with a lot of remakes is that besides the cast. often iit is the director who makes a film so successful. In this case, it was writer director Steve Gordon who died shortly after. Sadly he never got to make another film, it would've been interesting to see what else he had up his sleeve. The original Arthur had a perfect blend of crude and sophistication(of course, when I say crude, I mean 1981 crude), it's almost like a Blake Edwards film. The new one just doesn't look good at all. I smiled during the Mirren in a Darth Vader mask scene, but that's directly from a better scene in the original with Gielgud wearing a ten gallon hat. Russell Brand has been quoted comparing his film with the original, which he calls, "edgy". Pretty much figured out then that Arthur wouldn't be a drunk. And is this a romantic comedy? Where's the Linda character? The only good thing about this remake is it has pushed Warner's into releasing the original on bluray come April. Comes with the sequel, which is nowhere as good, but would've preferred a single film special edition. Still, it's Arthur, finally in widescreen and in hi-def!
-
But that would leave you with one.
-
moore was easily a man-child brand works too hard at it and i love helen mirren, but she doesnt work at all in the role didnt laugh once
-
This has nothing to do with the original movie's characters or plot, which exception to the name Arthur and the name Bitterman. Corporate have far too much power over what happens to these properties.
-
About how the original was great sacred and this one sucks, I didn't crack a smile are simpletons. The original is undoubtably an hysterical classic but this trailer was very funny and I laughed out loud a few times. This culture of choosing sides and swearing allegiances to "either" "or" is just so primitive. If you honestly didn't laugh at this trailer then fine, that's one thing but if it's because it's a remake then you have psychological problems. Grow up.
-
No Liza Minelli character and a Puerto Rican named Bitterman? WTF? Did this really have to be called Arthur? Why not Silver Spoons The Movie?
-
and this one especially. If there is one actor out there right now who annoys the piss out of me, it's Russel Brand. He's not funny and never will be. I won't be wasting my time seeing this one.
-
Katey, I'll be there in 6 months are less when this sham of a marriage disintegrates.
-
Actually, herpes is funnier.
-
There were some decent chuckles in there... and Helen Mirren is always fun to watch.
-
I like Russell Brand at times, and if you're going to remake Arthur, he seems a good choice on the surface... and I'm not opposed to remakes exactly either. I like how they seem to have altered the story and general makeup of the cast, but after watching the trailer I'm wondering why remake Arthur? This almost seems more like a remake of The Toy.. that movie with Richard Pryor and the spoiled kid. We'll see.
-
That was the ENTIRE point of the first film!
-
No, really. This movie is for pooping on.
-
"...alcoholism isn't 'funny' to women over forty and grandparents. Can we switch the alcoholism so that Arthur has an insatiable appetite for Chile's hamburgers? Cross-promotion synergy!!!"
-
You're the kind of sucker Hollywood loves. Keep laughing at these shitty remakes, and keep feeding them your hard earned dollars. Meanwhile, those of us who have psychological problems, will be watching good cinema.
-
Something odd about that chin aint there?
-
Is this rated G? Well looks heart touching I guess but looks like "hey he's funny wanna catch that on cinemax girlfriend/wife/sex buddy/girl you band on the sid/girl you like who hangs out with you/alone talkin to yourself? unless its free then lets go the movies" ;/
-
Brand Is not funny and looks like Rocky Dennis, I won't see this crap
-
No Christopher Cross theme? Oh well...aside from that, it does, in fact, look terrible. I remember the sheer delight of seeing the original version in the theater back in the 80s...this is another remake that will fail, fail, fail. Dare I say, Arthur 2: On the Rocks, the inept, terrible sequel to the original film will stand up like a proverbial MASTERPIECE compared to this. Should be called "Russell Brand 'comedy' film", NOT "Arthur." It's sad what the studios will end up releasing to trade on our good memories and feelings of original versions. Sad.
-
Ummm. the whole concept behind "Arthur" was an alcoholic learning to grow up in a world that enables his bad behavior. This.........is not that movie. Judging by the trailer, it could just as easily be a "Billy Madison" remake.
-
It's obvious from the trailer that Arthur is no longer a drunk. I cannot believe we live in a world that has become this fucking PC. The Bad News Bears don't curse anymore. Arthur doesn't drink. I imagine Ferris Bueller won't steal the Ferrari and destroy it when they get around to remaking that. He probably won't even cut school. His day off will be a scheduled holiday. This looks like a steaming piece of shit. The original was brilliant with some of the best dialogue and performances you'll see in a standard romantic comedy. I don't know if Brand can open a movie by himself, but the fact that they are calling this Arthur is a slap in the face to the late Mr. Moore and the original film. I fucking hate the studio system. I work in it and I fucking HATE IT. This is what we're up against as filmmakers and film fans. You're up against an entire industry of shit for brains douchebags who have no balls, no conviction, no thoughts in their head and want to sanitize everything you write in the hopes of eeking out an ten cents. I turned in a script to a studio with the word "shit" in it three times, and they told me to go back and remove it. Shit. I hate Kevin Smith movies, but the fat motherfucker is right to take his ball and go home with it and figure out a way to avoid these bloated dim witted assholes. Doing it on your own and keeping a modicum of integrity and vision in his process is worth the struggle. Fuck the studio system. Unless you make Dark Knight and can tell them to go fuck themselves and still get shit made with them, it's a depressing soul crushing industry to work in.

At least this will get us the Blu-Ray of the Original...
by Dursman2000
Pretty much the only good thing that'll come from this. Recasting Arthur as a sober man-child -- good luck with that. Looks like utter crap.

This guy's a joke and a bad one at that.

No? I'll check back in another 15.

Still, I'll be there for the rebound with Katy when Brand sticks his toothpick in some skank

Not sharp or bright or insightful or hilarious. Just nice. Kind of amusing. Like a polite chuckle with some true warmth in it. I don't remember the original at all, so I am not wounded by this. I feel like Brand is playing Brand. Helen Mirren is always perfect. Nordling, I have yet to see you post something without whinging about it in a very tiresome way. Try to editorialize a bit less, or at least a bit more interestingly. You just sound whiney, like that comic book shop guy who nerds out his nose that the world isn't folding itself in half for him. Just... ugh.
-
He's the only thing that made me smile while watching this. Just make a movie with him in a Robin costume. It will be funnier than this movie.
-
I'm surprised.
-
...where is drunk Arthur? That's why he acted like a dick. He was an alcoholic. It was hilarious. If Brand's Arthur is a dick normally, who cares.
-

Russell Brand is a prick - another shit remake of a classic
by Swordfleece
What the fuck is it with Hollywood Dudley Moore brought a certain charm to the role Russell Brand cannot act and is a sleazeball. Listening to him spout filth and head off about who he's shagged makes me vomit. Totally miscast. They should've gone with someone like Ben Stiller or Owen Wilson!! Pass
-
so I doubt i'll ever watch this one. dudley moore's slap-sticky "drunk" in the original was a bit too red skelton-ish for me. not that i don't dig me some red skelton, mind you....
-
He nails Katy Perry every night right? His stand up is pretty funny. I think the dudes who truely hate him are guys in the closet who are furious that Brand kind of walks around with I don't give a shit attitude. People thought he was gay in the US until they found out he was nailing chicks all across Britain and now Perry. I hate remakes so I will avoid it most likely. Frankly though the trailer looks fine and actually has it's moments.
-
I've taken more entertaining shits.
-
I can't speak for everyone, but I personally don't give a fuck about Brands personal life, his beliefs or whatever. He's not funny and he annoys the shit out of me.
-
What a waste of perfectly good celluloid. Two minutes of trailer and not a single laugh! Who wrote this swill? Did they HAVE to take a dump on this project?!?
-
Because why would you not want to bang Jennifer Garner?
-
I thought at least Russel Brand would put his own spin on the character, since his persona is different than Dudley Moore's, but it sounded like he was doing an impression of Moore. So why see it? Im guessing, as with the alcohol, it would puss out like the "Bad News Bear" remake. boo
-
Thanks. That trailer just saved me 8 quid.
-
so I'll be seeing it asap. Not that it matters but the trailer looks quite good. You guys that don't love him are just denying yourselves one of the great pleasures in life. Give in! :D
-
I'm not a big fan, but his appearances on Stern have always been hilarious..he's a quick wit. I haven't liked his stand up much, or his UK TV shows, but I thought he was perfectly cast in Get Him To the Greek...only slightly overshadowed by Rose Byrne's brilliant (and somewhat ironic) take on Britney Spears and um..girls like Katy Perry
-
Is that his bit?
-

Oh and Jennifer Gardner's character loves horses and no jokes about it yet?
by aceattorney
Wow.
-
Marc Bolan biopic, Russell. Look into it.
-
<p>So many AICN TBs are a bunch of elitist self-righteous fuckwits who think the sun rises and falls based on their own wims (despite what Bill O'Reilly says). What you morons need to fucking figure out is that you barely represent less than 1% of the theatre going audiences and the current cultural mass. You may not like Russell Brand, I'm not really that big a fan either, but he is currently extremely popular to everyone else and that's why they made this movie with him in mind. Not because he can act, but because they can produce a pre-existing movie's storyline around Brand's comedic style. If you don't like it. If you think it looks like shit, fine. Don't go see it. Hollywood's not listening to you, they're listening to your wallet.</p> <p>I liked Mirren in this, I liked Guzman as well and the joke about horse shoes. I doubt if I'll go see this in the theatre, but it sure seems like a waste of time to complain about something I won't even see any way.</p>
-
to see if it's up their ass.
-
Are you saying having some taste is a problem?
-
"Do you think he wants some cheese?" I still laugh at that everytime I see it. Brand is not a boil on Moore's ass.
-
Dude looks like a circus clown Dudly was a real man A DURNK but never like this...sad sad
-
Us "nerds" hate Russell Brand because he nails Katy Perry every night. It has nothing to do with, you know, him not being funny. At all. *rolls eyes*
-
Wow, you're fucking brilliant. This is AICN. This is a talkback. This is where we voice our opinions about movies, trailers, movie news, etc. We're just giving our raw opinion. You know, what a "talkback" was intended for. What's your problem again?
-

I think Juggernaut is trying to say that...
by SierraTangoFoxtrotUniform
...you shouldn't complain about anything you don't like. Yes, he's saying this on an AICN talkback. If there's an endeavor in all of human history that is more futile I am not aware of it.

Agree 100% with you Harry.
-
All I keep getting is Russell Brand.
-
So this is the Arthur remake huh? Really? Did the guys that made this even SEE the original movie? I guess not. The only thing we can hope for is that the zombie apocalypse does happen and that Dudley Moore gets his revenge.
-
Because she looks like Steven Tyler, for one reason. (Google him, youngsters. He used to be in a Rolling Stones tribute band. Then, for awhile in the 80s, he was the lead singer for Heart.) For another, Ben Affleck has pubic hairs bigger than you, so quit typing crudely about his wife.
-
Feb. 10, 2011, 10:08 p.m. CST
maybe it was the 90s that Steven Tyler was lead singer for Heart.
by Subtitles_Off
The last thirty years are all kind of a blending of suck. American culture is a shit-flavored smoothie.
-
...is that it prompted the studio to finally release the original Arthur (and its so-so sequel) on blu-ray. The DVD version of Arthur never had an OAR widescreen transfer, but the blu-ray will finally give us the film in its original aspect ratio! Release date is April 5.
-
Why am I a sucker? I loved the original. I happen to think this looks very funny. I can separate this from the original. My psychological remark was aimed at those (you) who constantly choose side "This" against "That" You're attack on me proves my point (thank you) I found this trailer funny, you call me a sucker, so let me return this base behavior...you opinionated fucktard! You go watch you "good" cinema. "Twilight"??? I pity your shallow perspective little boy.
-
Love that movie, and that scene in particular.
-
He's not a drunk and he's not in love. What the hell is this movie about now?? Remakes are pathetic.
-
I didn't laugh during the trailer, they changed Arthur away from being a drunk, and they made some joke about him not being able to make tea. This looks terrible and audiences will not buy this crap. I feel bad for anyone that has their money tied up in the shit storm because heads are gonna roll and people are getting fired. Bombs away....
-
Russell Brand is fine in supporting roles, like in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Get Him to the Greek was not as good. There was too much Brand. And now he remakes Arthur. No. I can see no reason to see this.
-
All you Brans haters and those who didn't laugh at that trailer represent 1% of the population. That percentage seems a little too small even by my estimate but you should realize all your bitching means nothing it will not effect this movie one bit. You have no effect. Pretty sobering isn't carry on with your hate. Sad little creatures.
-
*Brand* not *Brans* Edit button Harry, sigh. After your better that is. Get well.
-
"Pretty sobering isn't "it" carry on.
-
....oh wait. Seriously though, looks shit.
-
that's not a "massive flop" you smell, it's your retched self assured opinion that because you did not laugh it will be a flop. That's some arrogance there, right? See I laughed and found it funny but I'm not a sad little basement gnome that believes my opinion will make this a success. I hope it is but I can't make that prognostication from a trailer. "ass clown".....you aint kidding.
-
He only emerged when Harry went dark.
-
Don't think so! Next you'll be referencing other Dudley Moore 'greats' like Santa Claus The Movie or '10' (yeesh). Let's face it, his best work was 'Not Only But Also'. Nothing else. The trailer? Some of it looked quite good. Not the best of films but far from the worst. Of course in the talkbacks everything IS either the best or the worst. Methinks I'll change to Den Of Geek.....
-
but he did one very serious piece of work uk television and he was a revelation in that. I remember when he did a stint on mtv select and he was hilarious. but he was fired after he appeared on that show as osama bin laden after 9/11. by then everyone knew he was high on drugs. he is a bit like marmite, you either like him or you dont.
-
and potential profits from 80's remakes puzzles me. I guess they are targeting a weird demo of really young people who don't know the originals or seniors who recall the titles but have forgotten the content because of senility? Because anyone who grew up during the 80's watched all of these movies over and over again on cable (unlike today, where I assume the kids only watch something from a rental, netflix, download, torrent, etc. once or twice?). It makes sense that Tweeners and Gen X rail against remakes, because the movies are a part of our mind's landscape, and it doesn't seem quite so long ago that they debuted.
-
Not a chance in hell this will be anything but awful, I'll rewatch the original.
-
I did see him drinking twice...In the scene where his mother cuts him off, he has a drink in his hand, and at the end, in the Batman costume. I would say that for a green band trailer, they can't show him drinking too much, or present it as an affliction in his life... ANd just because he isn't channeling Moore's head bobbing, mush-mouthed depiction of a drunk, doesn't mean he isn't acting intoxicated. There was an interview with Brand about 4 months ago, where the interviewer asked him how hard it was to play a drunk when he has had his own addiction issues, and Brand's answer pretty much confirmed he is a drunk in the movie. (Oh, and don't take my comments about Moore's performance as a slam against him. The original Aurthur was and still is one of my favorite movies.) "Would you like me to come in there and wash your dick, you little shit?"
-
To send a message to Hollywood that we're sick of remakes. SCREW YOU, HOLLYWOOD!
-
...and loved it. Now, I'm hardly a basement dwellar, but I'm not crazy about this. I am not fond of remakes in general, but as I and others have stated above, I do llike the side benefit of a remastering or release of the original. I get tired of the remakes because, if the ones who defend them are really honest, there have been more announced remakes than ever. Every stinking day, if seems there is a remake on the books. While there have always been remakes, they were always a tiny part of the releases each year(and there have probably been years where there wasn't even one!). Hollywood used to be much more original, now it's remakes, sequels superheroes or carbon copies of current hits. But when it becomes apparent that they are doing a remake, I hope for the best. I doubt most people on this site want to watch a bad movie. I think we are expressing our disappointment with this. This looks like a more slapsticky, and sentimental version. That's a problem in current Hollywood. No point of view. Whatever you may think of the first Arthur, Steve Gordon was not a sentimental kind of guy. Sure it was sad when Hobson got ill, and Arthur sobered up for that, but then he went right back to drinking. You know, for all you defenders of this(and by the way, if you think this looks good, well, that's okay, everyone has their opinion, but I worry that if it really is lame, but successful, it just leads into more lame remakes) this looks like they've remade Arthur AND its sequel. Arthur didn't really give up the money for the girl in the first one(okay, he did, veeerrry briefly right at the end and then got the money back). But in the second one, Burt Johnson pulled a fast one and got Arthur's family to cut him off. Then he was adjusting to being broke, and looking for a job, giving up drinking etc. So really, this is more a remake of a lame film, cuz Arthur 2 was not very good. I think if you want to see this take on Arthur, go watch the second one, because I bet it carries more of the flavor of that one. And for the defenders of Brand, I don't think he's that "hip" he's just married to an overrated pop star. I would've preferred a lot of others in this, someone a lot more charming, like Simon Baker, or more grumpy as the previously mentioned Hugh Laurie. I just haven't seen this guy do much that impresses me yet. He's like a less talented Sasha Baron Cohen. He just may be your generations Yahoo Serious, or that guy that was in that really weird "Fred" movie or Carrot Top.

This will flop. Just like Get Him to the Greek. Make no mistake about that. I've never heard none of my non-film geek friends ever once say they liked Brand or ever mention him at all for that matter. I think thecheesegrommit must be Brand himself. So, sad!

The original is one of my all time favorite comedies, and this initially fell into the "why the fuck are they remaking this when there are so many shit movies they could be remaking" category. <p>It's still in that category, but after watching the trailer, and more specifically, seeing the cast they've assembled, it looks like, at the very least, this is not your run-of-the-mill looking for a quick buck kinda remake. At least they're making an effort. <P> Mirren, Guzman, Nolte (someone said that up above, is it true?), these are all people worth watching. Russell is still a question mark in my mind, could go either way. And, really, who would you have cast as Arthur instead of him? Kind of a no-brainer there, given that he is quite popular with large segments of the population.<p> As for the drinking, I have a sneaking suspicion it's still there, just intentionally not called out in the trailer for fear of offending some folks. When he's dressed up as batman at the end, he's holding a drink and seems pretty well sloshed. <p> Finally, I find it beyond ridiculous that they devoted maaaaaaybe 4 seconds of the entire trailer to the Linda character and instead focused on Arthur trying to evade Susan. I get that Garner's the bigger name and all, but I reeeeeaaaallly hope they didn't mostly disregard the Linda plotline from the original in favor of focusing the story on Arthur and his path to "growing up." That would be a HUUUUGE mistake.<p>I'll likely see this, after it's run in the theaters.<p> "Why don't you forget about the moose - for a minute!"

I'm guessing playing a drunk wouldn't be such a good idea.

That was truly awful! Who the hell finds this guy funny and who the hell thought this was a good trailer?
