That J.J. Abrams/Jonathan Nolan Pilot For CBS Turns Out To Be About A Scientist And A CIA Killer Who Team Against Pre-Crime!!

Published at:  Feb 09, 2011 11:53:59 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

Way back on Sept. 17 Vulture reported that CBS was close to greenlighting a mysterious new crime thriller from screenwriter Jonathan Nolan (“The Dark Knight”) and producer J.J. Abrams (“Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol.”

Now CBS has not only confirmed the greenlight for “Persons of Interest,” it has revealed a premise that might remind some a little of Abrams’ “Fringe.” From Entertainment Weekly:

An ex-CIA hitman and a scientist team up to prevent crimes before they happen.

Until “Interest” is greenlit to series, CBS remains the only major network never to air an Abrams series. Abrams had “Felicity” at The WB, “Undercovers” at NBC and “Alias” and “Lost” at ABC, and still has “Fringe” at Fox. Nolan also co-wrote “The Prestige” and wrote the short story on which “Memento” is based.

Find EW’s story on the matter here.

    by mrgray

True, much of what JJ does is retooling. But if the original ideas were any good, wouldn't they have been produced as is? He may not be a genius original creator, but I think calling him a hack isn't really accurate, either.

Now it's nothing like The X-Files and is the best thing on TV.

    by hercvault_double_exclamation_point

I know you like friday night lights, Herc... the series finale was great... if i was teaching a course on writing for TV, i'd have friday night lights as a full semester case study... the writing is phenomenal as well as the acting, the music, the cinematography, the characters and the fact that they NEVER take the easy way out or use cliche characterization and cliche situations... brilliant, brilliant television.

    Investigating pre-crime...

    by storyfirst

Does that not breach every principle of human rights...I mean, the crime has not been committed. Even if you have a machine that tells you that a murder takes place and who does it - it is surely against civil liberties to investigate people before the crime has taken place. So the premise is kind of twisted but I just can't see where they go with this. A CSI dept sitting, twiddling their thumbs until something happens?

My point: If a quality show like Fringe has struggled and fought its way to season three. Surely this won't get past the mid-season break?

  • So many thing we do now leave trails. Our Internet surfing and buying habits, our cellphone calls, and the cellphone itself as a tracking device, the camera systems in place in our cities, the computer chips in our cars that monitor our driving habits and times of operation. Systems that can identify stress levels in our handwriting, and voice conversations over the phone. Which also log keywords said over the phone. Image search engines that actually use images to find images that are similar or exactly the same over the Internet- Letting you trace down the origin of an image if it ever appeared somewhere online. Nearly everything we do is traceable now.

Thsi is becoming reality right now

    by thejudger

Special programs in play to study the retained activity habits of captured criminals. Finding out what they have in common as a collective. Setting up a monitoring system that detects and logs anyone who preforms similar types of activity events.

Dropping these types of people into a watch group. When one of those "watch types" starts looking up words like "Preventing fingerprints by wearing chainmail butchers gloves" It time t go get em! Thereby stopping crime before it happens.

You don't think this is reality, you don't think it wont be fact one day. Ha!

The ideas he's aping WERE made elsewhere. Granted no movie you make is going be 100% original. Everything will remind you of something, but with Abrams as soon as you hear one sentence you go "Oh, so it's Minority Report'. Oh so it's 'True Lies' but on TV. Oh, so he's basically remaking X-Files or E.T. I think his brainstorm sessions are basically like "let's redo this movie cause I like it. Only we'll come up with some kind of cocktease so people don't realize they're just watching something they've already watched.". Genius!

Not that it was a success ...

    by dogrobber

... but didn't the BBC (or was it ITV) try something slightly similar with their 'Paradox' series? Not that this new series will be a copy of anything, just pointing out that there are other ways to create a show that involves preventing future crimes without it being the same as 'Minority Report'.

    by asimovlives

Despiste all my pissing on FRINGE, i really don't care all that much if Jar Jar Abraams and his cronies are fucking around on TV. It's their fucking around on movies that really bothers me, speially when they make dumb down crap versions of former good properties, like Star Trek.

The only way Abrams can piss me off in his Tv work is if he gets his pawns on TV Star Trek or any other classic good TV show and make a whole TV show in the image of his fucking ST movie. Other then that, whatever!
