"Not Just A Soldier, But A Good Man." - CAPTAIN AMERICA Super Bowl Spot is up

Hey folks, Harry here...

And here is where you can see the CAPTAIN AMERICA Super Bowl spot - which I'm trying to download to get a better look at, but it looks pretty damn good, on my tiny Hospital TV...

OK - Here I am again.   I've watched the TV spot, repeatedly...   It's going to be fucking amazing.  I love that we're going to see sickly puny Steve Rogers working to go through Basic Training.  I love that we'll see him and Bucky as friends going through that.   I love - the look of things, and I think it is going to be amazing.

At least this does nothing but reinforce my Captain America mania that I've been going through.   I can not wait!

Here it is

So there is the skull fucking promised from the Thor trailer!

  • Feb. 6, 2011, 7:11 p.m. CST

The original Skull was definitely a mask, restyles

    by rev_skarekroe

Wiki agrees with me: "Dissatisfied with the standard drill instruction his subordinates used to train Schmidt, Hitler took over personally, and trained Schmidt as his right-hand man. Upon completion, Hitler gave Schmidt a unique uniform with a grotesque red skull mask, and he emerged as the Red Skull for the first time. His role was the embodiment of Nazi intimidation, while Hitler could remain the popular leader of Germany. "

A "teaser", "trailer", and "TV Spot" are three different things...

    by Fa_Tass_DinoMolester

THIS is a a TV Spot, usually 30 seconds in length, and aired...on...TV. <p> A "Teaser" or "Teaser Trailer" usually premieres in movie theaters and "teases" a film, not necessarily including any footage from the movie itself. <p> A "Trailer" is a full-blow promotion for a film, again playing in movie theaters and acting as a highly condensed version of the film itself, featuring extensive footage from the film. <p> Not that hard to grasp, really.

    by blackwood

Johnston is hitting the right beats at the right time. It game me a quick glimpse of many things I was curious to see, and they came out pretty much as I had hoped. Even short, there is a vibe, and they vibe is kind of an Amblin vibe, a ROCKETEER vibe, mixed with a bit of War 'berg. Promising. It shows promise.

  • Feb. 6, 2011, 7:30 p.m. CST

    Looks good!

I've never really read the captain america comics except when he guest starred in spiderman or xmen. But this seems promising I like that it has a 'band of brothers' tone to the cinematography.

    Catching Shield

    by RollingBarrelDotCom

Anyone else catch that when he did that roll towards the end of the trailer that he was CATCHING the shield as it flew back to him. I think they nailed the trailer and he looks great in action. I am keeping my hopes high for this movie! Clearly also showed that the shield is indestructible and the PAINT was why it was all chipped up in the other photos.

    Cap with a gun

    by Bobthegrinch

We can see Captain America running round with side arm and shield. Do we think we'll see him abandoning guns in this film or will he be using a gun throughout? I'm not bothered either way, as long as we get some decent shield throwing and hand to hand expertise, but I am curious as to whether he'll just lose his gun or choose to stop carrying one in this or Avengers or whether cinematic Cap will be a gun toter.

Some people just get off on hating things. It fulfills them. Maybe because expressing indifference implies you have high standards, which everything fails to meet, so that means something about the quality of your character, being someone who doesn't put up with threats of mediocrity, which is a bit funny, because they display the same time and again. Or, to quote Einstien: "Great spirits have always faced violent opposition from mediocre minds."

I fear this follow the Iron-Man formula

    by Larrylongballs

of 90 minutes of exposition and suit building followed by a brief action sequence and a climactic fight between hero and villain that will last about three minutes. Fuck, Iron-Man sucked. Say what you will about Bana-Hulk, Spider-Maguire 3 and Singerman Returns at least those films had solid second halves that were loaded with action. These new Marvel films may stick to comic book cannon but am I supposed to care if I haven't spent a lifetime reading comic books? And these new marvel films are light on the action. They are going to have to kick it up a notch and drop of that character development shit if they want my future ticket money.

    Skinny Steve Rogers

    by Dan

According to an article on the MTV website, Chris Evans said they are using CGI to make him look skinny for the pre-transformation scenes. Probably like in X-men 3 when CGI was used to make Xavier and Magneto look young and "wrinkle-less" for the flash-back sequence. Here is an excerpt. And the movie's star, Chris Evans, says that the studio has figured out the perfect way to do it, using technology to shrink him down to play the smaller than Captain America-sized Steve. "They got some great stuff going on right now. Initially they were going to do all body replacement — hire another actor completely and have this skinny body do the scene and do face replacement," Evans told MTV News at Comic-Con in San Diego. "But I guess the first couple tests weren't what they were hoping it would be, and then they decided to go with just shrinking me down. They did a couple tests. It looks fantastic and it's really going to be a big transition."

    Cap's name

    by Dan

Remember the time period this came from. Captain was created and first appeared in a 1941 comic book. He was meant to be a heroic, patriotic figure for the WW2 period. Back then, comic books were more idealistic; not like "realistic", anti-hero comics of today. When Marvel comics brought Cap into the present day by finding him frozen, they had the perfect opportunity to do a "fish out of water" story.

Wolfman was fun- Cap A looks great- Johnston's a good director.

    by ChezKing

The Wolfman had it's flaws but it still managed to be a beautifully shot, highly entertaining action monster movie. Even with all its flaws it's better than most monster flicks. It's an incredibly over-criticized movie. I bought the extended unrated blu ray and it's a blast. It's without question one of my favorite werewolf movies. The look of the Wolfman, the feel and style of the movie as period piece was a rare cinematic treat. Joe Johnston did an awesome job with what he had to work with. He did a great job, and will likely knock Captain America out of the ball park.

I've read Cyborg was supposed to be MOTU2, but I still like MOTU1 better than that movie.

    by Kammich

I know very little of the comic's lore, nor anything of the film's plot... so I won't judge any of that on a 30-second money shot teaser. However, the visuals are incredibly impressive. They nailed the Red Skull design, which was my biggest concern. And the diminutive Rogers is a testament to how far seamless CGI has come(it takes the Winkelvoss effects from "The Social Network" and ramps them up to 11, I'd say). Johnston seems to have nailed the look and tone of the period and action, from what I can discern of 30 seconds of footage. The overall acting and plot remains to be seen, though, so I'll remain cautiously optimistic.

This has already been explained, but let me try one more time to explain what Tallboy is saying to everyone who use The Wolfman to cite Johnsons incompetence: Johnson took over production from the original director 3 WEEKS before shooting. Say what you want about the movie, but what the fuck can you do with only 3 weeks to get ready to film? Locations are already rented, sets are built, actors are there, wardrobe, everything is already set up and paid for to film the script they have and he jumped in and made a decent movie even in spite of this. And youre saying he should have changed the script? Are you kidding? That wasnt his job; his job was to salvage what he could of a trainwreck and i believe he performed admirably in spite of all the shit he had to overcome. Its Alien 3 all over again.

  • I was just thinking the same thing the other day. Since Captain America shakes hands with Bush at the end of The Ultimates #1. Obama is a certified comic geek and I'd bet anything he'd pencil an afternoon in to do an Avengers cameo in a heartbeat. As cheesy as it seems, at the least it would be a great Election plug for him. He'd totally do it.

you're quite right, I shouldn't hate on a trailer. I still didn't like what I saw. I think a character like Captain America is out of date. I can guarantee you that regardless of how good or bad the movie is, it will still come across like military propoganda and "America" once again saving the day. I know it's just a comic book and not knowing much of the history of this character, being set around world war 2 he probably was a character used for propoganda.

    by kevred

Surely "set in WWII with a Nazi villain" didn't exactly sound like cash registers ringing to most studio execs. So kudos to Marvel for doing it this way anyway. It makes perfect sense to comic aficionados, of course, but will be a harder sell to the average schmuck, so I hope it's good and does well. I enjoyed the Thor teaser, too. More cuts than the eye can follow, but did a good job of making the setup and leads appealing. I'm sure Marvel is already gearing up their "starring Academy Award winners Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins" ad campaigns to boost the prestige factor.

Yeah I don't know, I'm bummed I guess.. it gave me the impression of another CGI fest, and nothing real deep or substantial. Then again, I don't know much about Captain America, so this movie is not for me, but I've gotten interested in it from the numerous talkbacks. lol I also got the Indy IV vibe too, like someone above mentioned. As for the scrawny to buff change, um hello, Spiderman anyone? Granted, Maguire is nowhere NEAR the beast that Evans has become. That's great though, so we got: Swinging around warehouse - Indy 4, check Suit - Dark Knight, check Scrawny to buff - Spiderman, check Villian straight out of GI. Joe - check I do like two of those movies, so maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised. "What do you want from us?" "Inception. Is it possible?" "Of course not." *grumbled english* "If you can steal an idea from someone's mind, why can't you plant one der instead?" "Ok, here's me planting an idea in your head. I say to you, don't think about elephants. What are you thinking about?" "Errephants." "Right, but it's not YOUR idea, because you know I gave it to you. The subject's mind can always trace the genesis of the idea. True inspiration is impossible to fake." *whisper* "That's not true."

My eyeballs are bleeding. I was disappointed with this film from the start. I thought it was terrible casting for Cap and I hadn't heard of the director. I thought this was another throwaway comic book movie like Ghost Rider or The Fantastic Four. Then I saw the production stills and thought, "Hey, this could work." The highlight of the Super Bowl tonight was this trailer. I waited and watched a bunch of terrible commercials to see this and was not disappointed. Judging from everything I have seen so far, this will be one of the best superhero movies we have seen yet.

Digitally shot junk with fake anamorphic lense flares!

    by The_Genteel_Gentile

Seriously this looked so digi-cam horrible I just want to punch Joe Johnston in the teath right now. I honestly feel betrayed by what I just saw in that spot. The unrealistic overly saturated skin tones, the airbrushed looking faces...ugh that is so ugly man! It's like Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow, only inexcusably so. I mean Sky Captain was fun for what it was, a purposefully highly stylized mid-budget fantasy flick not really even trying to replicate reality. Then to add insult to injury, trying to mask the the extrremely poor dicision of digital photography with fake anamorphic lense flares...c'mon, give me a break would you? The movie could have looked so good too, the lighting and composition aren't the problem. Hidalgo was a great looking picture also shot by Shelly Johnson for Joe Johnston, but the difference is it was on 35mm anamorphic. As was the movie that I'm sure got Johnston this gig more than any other, The Rocketeer. As was the movie Johnston claims as his major influence for the style of his Captain America; Raiders Of The Lost Ark. Anamorphic 35 not digital garbage! I'm not saying Captain America can't still be good as a movie, story and character, but because of the choice to go digital it will always look wrong to me and I'll never be able to fully enjoy it on an aesthetic level. I'd rather just watch Forever Young again, I mean it had a guy thawing out decades after a military expierement and it didn't offend my eyes with bland digital! Plus Mel Gibson was, is and always will be THE MAN!

Footage looked great. Commercial was cut oddly, though

    by Ash Talon

I like the footage. Red Skull looks good. Love the Howling Commandoes. I think the Cap costume is one of the best realized superhero movie costumes to hit screens. <p> However, the commercial has an odd flow to it. It shouldn't end on testing the shield. We've already seen the shield in action. End it on the Red Skull reveal or an action shot like Cap swinging. <P> For those comparing Cap's costume to Batman's in Dark Knight....what? You're holding onto the DK love a little too tight. I see no similarities worth mentioning. Seriously, DK was a snoozefest as was Inception. It's okay to admit it.

    by templar

I know I really shouldn't be doing this, because I'm basically doing what all the naysayers usually do (in that they dismiss the movie as shit based solely on the trailer). Well I'm doing the opposite. I think the movie looks fantastic. I love the fact that they kept the mythology of Cap (unlike Fox who routinely fucks up the mythos of the character to something almost unrecognizable). Way to go Marvel. Liked the way they did the scrawny Steve Rogers

    No nazis = tough sell

    by Tomarru

I don't get why there are no nazis in this, it's part of the cap mythos, it lends some wieght to the character and places him in our world. Having him fight some organisation that wouldnt be out of place in some kids tv show kinda nullifies the character. Don't get me wrong, some of what has been shown looks cool, but if he's up against villains that wouldnt look out of place in the gi joe movie it's hard to care.

I think you got to be from the US to dig this crap. What a bunch of laughable shite. A guy in a Stars and Stripe Costume to bash NAZIS? Well thats subtle. So it's back to the Propaganda era (the 1940s), where they needed populism to unite the US crowd to march into war. And of course there is your "super hot" female scientist that should not be missing in a movie. I wonder if the peblicans are going to use "Mr Gung-ho" for 2012. Well it seems to work! *chr chr chr* stars and stripes costume...WTF?

    Pathetic haters

    by DannyOcean01

I can understand people suggesting holding off on the geekgasms until we see a full trailer, but crossing your arms in mock-troll rage in the face of said excitement because 'this ain't enough', is pathetic. If this isn't enough to geek out over, it sure as shit ain't enough to hate on the whole film. Johnston's got The Rocketeer, October Sky, Jurassic Park 3 (which, bar the ending, was a lot of fun), and the Wolf Man's failings were down to script, and a rushed production, not direction. Why the hate? Who doesn't want a superhero Band of Brothers?

...that some people still had to bring Obama into it. What do you people do when you are involved in a discussion and you can't think of how to bring the man into it? Start to twitch and sweat? "Hey, do you remember Care Bears?" (after much stammering and drooling, the answer comes) "Care...Bear..Bare...I CAN'T BARE OBAMACARE!!!!" First, if he did meet him in person at some point in the present day, that would make sense because HE IS THE PRESIDENT. Second, In the Ultimates comic, Cap was re-introduced to the world by George W. Bush...why? Because at that time, HE was the president, and even if you disliked the man and is administration, it would have been wrong to not have him as the POTUS. Christ, Bibleman and the rest of you birther fascist ass clowns shut the fuck up and go watch Omega Code. Other than that, what do we have? WWII setting? Ultimates style outfit (btw, that isn't what he will be wearing in the avengers, he will update it with current advancements in our era, so if it ain't your cup of tea, relax) a flawless Kirdy Red Skull, a great cast (I'm willing to give evans a shot here, the man seems committed) and loads of details straight out of the comics? I don't know about others, but I'm content, and think it will deliver.

  • and it looks exactly as the comics. Joe made me a believer (cause THOR looks shit)

    by kabong

Showing that Steve Rogers had the fighting spirit to become . . . Captain America!

  • I wasn't knocking an Obama cameo. I'm actually for it. I'm not some birther, or Fox news watcher. I'm pretty much the exact opposite. And yeah, I got that they had Bush introduce Cap to the world and that would be the main reason they'd use Barack. I was just say that as a 70's Marvel fan who supposedly was huge into Conan The Barbarian, Obama would probably jump at the chance to do the cameo and it would be a funny bit since 2012 is an election year. Of course the idiots at Fox News would probably try to spin it, "President Obama lives in a comic book fantasy world". Meanwhile on the left Ed Schulz will be screaming "Why can't the Avengers Assemble us up some JOBS!".

    by solitaire

Totally didn't mean you, from one 70's fan to another, I'm sorry if you took that as directed at you We are actually pretty much on the same page. The Ultimates comics were created to give a more modern take on classic heroes and villians, while grounding them in reallity as much as possible. I actually thought it was great in the comic when Bush asked him if he thought the current times were "cool or uncool?" because it seemed so in character and just added more life to it. I think we both would be behind an appearance from the current President when Cap awakes. My aggrivation is directed at people who come onto a talkback filled with excited fans who want to share how awesome the movie is looking and troll. If this movie is to succseed, it must convey a feeling of the times it is set in, patriotism, determination and hope, despite the hardships that surrounded us. I think we can all agree on that, and most of us can agree that seems to be the way Johnson is taking it.

    by thot

For years I wondered why in the hell no one had stepped up and produced a Captain America movie. Cap was always one of my favorites, (still have my comic books). So I was thrilled when news of this project came down. I've been encouraged by all the photos we've been getting and was very impressed by the Superbowl trailer. Everything looks right. I really like how they created the skinny Steve Rogers, I was cautiously optimistic about that part. Red Skull looks fantastic and the overall look and feel, for what we get in such a brief trailer, is spot-on. This is one hell of a year for superhero fans! Thor, Captain America and Green Lantern! (ok,...a shout-out to Green Hornet too) Geekgasm indeed :) And next year Batman, Superman, The Avengers and Spiderman!? My heart can barely take it......

    More questions for Albert Pyun

    by Zeno

    1. Was there ever the temptation to ask Matt if his dad could do a polish? 2. You made two movies with Kathy Ireland. Were there ever plans for making a Kathy Ireland trilogy? 3. Not one Chuck Norris movie on your resume. Shame on you. (Not a question, just sayin'.) 4. What is Snoop Dogg's process? Does he spend a lot of time getting into a character's soul, working inside out with sense-memory, etc.? Or does he just get baked? 5. Golan or Globus? 6. Seriously, you've proven yourself to be at the very least a competent director over the years. I'm going to guess that you just haven't been given an opportunity to really fly. Why haven't you done more episodic television as a way of building your resume with mainstream projects? I mean, can't your agent get you a gig on Fringe or something?

Whilst in his original appearance he may have worn a mask, and for some time since, in the current comics Johann Schmidt the Red Skull, suffered one of those tragically-ironic accidents that seem to occur in comics all too often and now his face and skin has indeed morphed into the features of a grotesque red skull. tl;dr it ain't a mask any more.

Of course at some point in the sequels if Jackson bows out or wants too much money they can just have Chris Cooper, Kurt Russell or Tom Berenger pull off a Sam Jackson mask and have it be this joke that everybody knew it was weird that Fury was wearing a Sam Jackson mask and doing an exaggerated over the top impression but didn't say anything about it.

Answers...1) No, we never considered approaching Matt about having his Father take a pass; 2) No to be frank, we never envisioned two Kathy Ireland movies let alone three. It was just through some weird circumstances a second film came into existence; 3) We've tried several times with Chuck. He and I met a number of times to figure out a way to work together but it was always roadblocked by something out of left field; 4) Snoop definitely has his own style and yeah, there was a lot of smoke involved. But he is very professional and a nice, easy going man; 5) No, haven't thought of tv at all. Did one episode of an NBC series called "Fifth Corner" and it didn't really work out well. I tried changing the show's color palette, shooting style and characters, which I guess is a no-no on a network series. The only positive thing I got was a nice thank you letter from NBC and TriStar for coming in way under budget and shooting a 9 day series shoot in 6 days. Thanks for your interest Zeno. Thanks for taking a quick sec to answer my snarky questions. That kind of thing goes a long way towards establishing goodwill with the geek audience. Just ask Kevin Smith. And as a final comment, I have to say that although the question about Matt Salinger's father doing a punch up on Captain America was a joke, the idea of "J.D. Salinger's Captain America, directed by Albert Pyun" is something beyond my mind's ability to actually conceptualize. To think about it too hard is like looking into face of the medusa.

The idea that the 'pinnacle' of what an American hero is (in this instance anyway) basically consists of an ordinary (albeit somewhat small and puny) man, who despite his undoubted willingness and drive to make the world a better place, as an American he cannot simply depend on his natural abilities and become a hero with his own god-given qualities, he has to be 'improved' by science and transformed/stereotyped into a tall, pumped-up, square-jawed jock in order to make any meaningful contribution to his country!!?? No wonder you yanks are all a bunch of steroid-pumped, fake-tanned, platform shoe-wearing fools!! :-D

... and here I thought they were doing away with the wings on the mask. Overall, I feel a little indifferent on this whole trailer. I hate the facial CGI tech that's being used in movies like Tron and now Captain America. It just looks fake and it bothers me. Maybe it was just me too, but I kinda felt like Hugo Weaving's Red Skull looked a bit CGI cartoony ala Yoda in AOTC. I really don't like Joe Johnston so I know I am being rough on this movie for the time being. I just have this vision of Jurassic Park III and then I think back to the Bret Ratner trailer for X-Men III which personally excited me. After that travesty of a film, I vowed not to be fooled by promising trailers coming from weak directors. I feel like if I buy into Cap... I'd be falling into the same trap I fell into with X3. Time will tell.

My only complaint with Captain America is that

    by KilliK

his physical appearance represents of what is considered the master race according to white supremacy.I understand that the character is a product of older times,of a more "white America" and that his design portrays of what was (and still is me thinks) considered the quintessential "American Hero" at that time. But in our modern, more politically correct times, this kind of physical representation of the American Ideals can be perceived in a varying way, from irritating and ridiculous to even offensive and provoking. i remember reading in a newspaper a few years ago, that the black firefighters of a fire station in San Francisco i think, were complaining and demanding for the removal of a poster which was hung in the station and which was showing John Wayne in his classic "cowboy on a horse" pose and having the title: American Hero. the main argument of the black fighters was that they could not accept John Wayne and what he was representing sub textually as an American Hero.America was build with the blood and sweat of black people too. and correct me if i am wrong but something similar was depicted in a scene in the movie Do the Right Thing now imagine how the non-white american audience MIGHT react to this movie and with good reason.thats why i believe that Cap America will prove a modest success in USA but a major hit in the rest of the world,in europe especially. thats my opinion.

I'm amazed that some think this trailer looks "amazing." Well, I'm actually not shocked. It reminded me of a made for tv flick for Starz or Syfy. I understand now why Hollywood cranks out craptastic films regularly.

    Major hit in Europe?

    by Forthesakeofhumanity

Time may prove me wrong, but as a European I really don't know how popular a movie about Captain America will be over here, at least compared to other super heroes. Let's face it, the character was basically intended to provide a mainstream propaganda role-model for American kids of the 1940's. A clean-cut idylic 'boy-scout' with wholesome American values of the time (or at least how many Americans would like to have regarded themselves) and as gleefully patriotic as they come. Even in the Marvel universe the character became an anachronism in an America which had evolved since wartime and the same can be said for the reality today. I don't think a huge proportion of Americans will identify with the character today as someone already stated he doesn't come close to accurately representing the typical American, and I'm pretty sure that the rest of the world will view this movie in the same way we all saw "Team America", but of course without all the intentional humour!!! :-D

    Not impressed

    by Apple Octopus

This trailer had the same feel as the trailer for Roger Corman's Fantastic Four, and may have been less impressive.

    Good points Killik.

    by Stalkeye

However Cap has more credibility among Blacks than say, John Wayne's films. I don't seem recall Wayne ever having a Black partner in any of his the very least, I'm not sure if any Black people played a major part in regards to said Movies either, so yeah, I can understand why some Black Firefighters would be pissed off. And speaking of Do the right thing, during the film's intro there's a song by Public Enemy that actually disses John wayne.I'm sure you are aware of it since you have seen the film. However, Cap's concept cannot and should not be omitted or deemed outdated to suit other countries. He is the fighting spirit of the american dream and to call him "captain planet" is goddamn rediculous. If that's the case, let's get rid of captain Britain altogether before there's a chance of him being made into a film that would offend others.

i think i'm ready for some captain america

    by thesmilingpsycho

isn't anybody else getting tired of all the anti-heros? i'm ready for some good old fashioned good vs. evil. i think now is as good a time as any for a captain america movie. especially with the popularity of call of duty. people will want to see a war time superhero.

    by Forthesakeofhumanity

has to be Dr Manhattan! :-D Why see things in terms of 'good' and 'evil' when you can just view everything on a sub-atomic level instead!? ;-)
