If there is no bear-claw fight or hall of mirrors finale, I'm going to be very disappointed...

It seems like Ang Lee can really stretch himself as a director. He's gotten an Austen adaptation, Civil War drama, and a period piece about the seventies, and now he's tackling kung-fu movies. Is this perhaps his foray into a higher box office bracket? As for Michelle Yeoh, I love her...I'm still having a hard time figuring out why Lucy Liu is getting all the asian roles today...

Man, I just can not believe they are not getting the infamous Raymond Chow to direct this bad boy, it has his name written all over it. In the meantime there some great old Jackie Chan movie thats been out for awhile, it is hosted by Dolemite. Weird huh? Oh well, go watch The Story of Ricky, now theres a movie that does things right. Me brain no function well at 2:30. Must take Nyquil!

    A true Michelle Yeoh story

    by toby o. notobe

I live in Hong Kong. The other day my buddy was late to meet his girlfriend after a few too many beers. The cab was stuck in traffic so by the time he got there he scooted right past his girlfriend and headed straight to the bathroom. Needless to say, it was occupied. After a minute of so of crossing and uncrossing his legs, he started banging on the door with his fist yelling

so much talent together - i'm looking forward to this one

    by c9751451

This film looks like it has all the elements to be a real gem. I love hong kong action movies but the good ones are pretty few and far between, they are often let down by dumb plots or rushed schedules, but this movie seems to be combining the cream of HK action (Yuen Woo Ping, Yeoh and Fat) with some high class direction (Lee) and as such should be awesome! Great storytelling with great action - I can't wait!

    Chow Yun PHAT!

    by lazarus long

This is just to pre-empt any assholes who might start ripping on Chow for being in Anna and the King. I remember seeing The Killer when it was first in U.S. Art house theatres, and my friends and I were like: "This guy is the most bad ass and charismatic actor we've seen in a while." The thought that an Asian man could possibly become internationally famous, including the USA, was mind-blowing...if he wants to do period dramas (which I believe he's done before, in HK), more power to him. This guy's got more range than 50 Tom Hanks put together, and it's just a matter of time before people start recognizing him as the truly great dramatic/action/comedic thespian that he his. Let's just hope some Hollywood sleazebag agent doesn't convince him to change his name to Chuck Young-Phantom. And also, this movie sounds very cool, although I still would like to see Chow work with Wong-Kar Wei of "Fallen Angels" and "Chungking Express" fame.

    When is it coming out?

    by eegah

The IMDB gives the release date as December 22. I wager that this is slightly off the mark. Anybody know? Personally, I'm excited about this one. After TND, I thought we'd be seeing a lot of Michelle Yeoh. I'm glad to see she was biding her time for the right project. And please let this be the role that brings Chow to the U.S. in grand fashion. "The Replacement Killers" was Chow-worshiping garbage and "The Corruptor" was sloppily directed and unpleasant. Even though "Anna & The King" isn't my kind of movie, I think it may be quite good. One of those grand epic-style movies. Who knows? But either way, this is the movie (hopefully) that will show US audiences what we have known all along: CHOW ROCKS!

    Chow Yun Fat

    by duke

Lazarus, I too remember going to see "The Killer" at an art house in San Antonio with my college buddies at the time. The one moment I'll never forget is that after the truly exhausting and mind-blowing opening sequence Chow Yun Fat walked the young girl to her apartment and the cat jumped out. Someone in the audience yelled "Shoot it" and it was just the tension-breaker everyone needed to burst out laughing and relax and realize that it was "just a movie." I have never been in a theatre since when an actor and director took hold of an audience like that and pulled them in. Obviously the director of "The Killer" is not at issue in this Talk-Back, but I agree with you that Chow Yun Fat Rules!

    Phat Fat

    by red_2

I've liked Chou Yun Fat since I saw The Replacememt Killers. He certainly has a greater range of roles than I would expect. As far as the others the only I can put a face to is Michelle (I forget her last name) from the Bond flick, and I don't remember how her acting was. I couldn't tell from the article, but did it sound to anyone else like this was going to be dubbed to english for release in the states? I really like the story line, it sounds like it could do well here. I haven't seen any of Ang Lee's films, but I've heard good things about him. I'd like to see this one. Peace.

I am in heaven. Hey, isn't Ang Lee the Sense and Sensibility guy? Anyway, CYF is the greatest. Yeoh is pretty good too. She totally upstaged Pierce Brosnan (not like that's difficult or anything. I bet she could break him over her knee!)

Chow Yun Fat reminds me of Cary Grant.

    by dennis

He's got the same sense of style, and the same comedic timing. But as he gets older, I have the feeling he may take more roles like Anna and The King. It just comes with the territory. Not that he can't still be a bad@$$ action star, but you begin to stretch believability. I just hope he gets the opportunity to crossover to the American market, otherwise, us Yankees'll miss out on some real talent.

    Chow Yun Fat

    by niiiice

I can think of two reason why he's getting into more dramatic roles and away from stylistic action vehicles in the U.S: 1.Replacement Killers, 2. The Corruptor. Ah, I long for the days of the God of Gamblers or Hard Boiled....

    Has anyone noticed...

    by dave_f

...that Chow Yun Fat has yet to speak in any of the trailers for Anna and the King? The previews have mostly been visual, I know, but he hasn't said a single line. What's the story on that? It's making me fearful. I want him to succeed, but maybe there's a reason they're not revealing much of him in the ads...
