The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day wishes you a Happy Life Day!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!

Okay, fess up. Who thought we were going to jump over to Empire? So sorry, but This shot was at first submitted to me as a Star Wars (A New Hope) picture, but I quickly noticed the TV camera and then saw Harrison Ford’s haircut. “Holiday Special!” I cried. Happy Life Day indeed!

So, yeah. Here’s your look at the making of the Star Wars Holiday Special. I love how fucking cheap this is. So cheap in fact that that Chewy and Han's feet can be seen sticking out from the bottom of the Falcon cockpit!

Sorry no Carrie Fisher doing a line off of Bea Arthur’s back, but maybe I’ll dig that one up later…

Tomorrow’s behind the scenes pic is not made of this crude matter!

    Re: STAR WARS Holiday Special

    by ArmageddonProductions

What, no love for Itchy and/or Lumpy? Little did we realize that Lucas "selling out" for the "STAR WARS Holiday Special" was gonna be about eighty times more entertaining than THE PHANTOM MENACE. Hell, if he did one now, it'd be ninety minutes of Playstation 3 graphics chasing around Justin Beiber during Jar-Jar Binks's prostate exam, featuring Joan Rivers as a sly eighty-year-old nurse and a performance by Aerosmith (and a coked-up Natalie Portman singing a cover of "Bring Me To Life" over a disco version of the "Duel of The Fates" theme).

By the way, before we delve too deep into the Bea Arthur jokes, anybody see Carrie Fisher lately? She looks like she ate a fat suit from BIG MOMMA'S HOUSE.

As a Child, I loved the Star Wars Holiday Special ...

    by MattHooper

As an adult, though, I still cannot believe they had those actors somehow contracted to do that, whether they liked it or not. And I can't remember this clearly, but I remember reading that they never got paid for it. Christ even the Muppet Show paid Mark. It would be very surprising to find out that this fading memory is accurate. Hope it's not. COMING SOON: STAR WARS: EPISODE VII: LAST OF THE JEDI I can dream, can't I ?

    Where was the special filmed?

    by TRON

Curious to know if the original video source was in NTSC or PAL,,,, if they only find the original 400 line 2" master........ come on Lucas, you could give it away to a low budget company and it could be sold on the dollar store DVD rack. That master tape is out there somewhere......... still surprised that a high res source tape hasn't been found anywhere,,,,,yet

  • Jan. 26, 2011, 12:33 p.m. CST

@billyeveryteen: you can find bootleg tapes, etc. all over the place

    by WriteForTheEdit

It really is worth tracking down and watching, just to witness one of the most surreal and wrong-headed things ever filmed. (The animated droid 'toons aren't unspeakably bad, just unexceptional, as I recall. It's the live-action material that will stupify.)

  • Jan. 26, 2011, 12:33 p.m. CST

  • Jan. 26, 2011, 12:36 p.m. CST

That fucking holiday special blew my mind with

    by UltraTron

that cartoon which was so alien to any animation I'd seen on Saturday morning. It was drawn with an actual style which really freaked out my mindless corporate shitheel raised cartoon sensibilities. There were no teenagers and a dog wearing towel capes that were added for no reason- so I remember not knowing what to think. I was suddenly outside the safety net of the corporate mantra of always ruining the source material with added corporate shitheel characters like Zan and Jana that no child in history ever once embraced or accepted. Even though there is that incredible incident that happened at that one base where many government workers met with what they said were not aliens but in fact time travelers. It is proof enough that no one has invented time travel or these horrendous cartoons would not exist. I don't know about you but the first thing I would do with such power is time-assassinate whoever came up with herbie the robot in place of human torch. Maybe we would have lost a couple of unbelieably stupid children to burning death but I think it would have been worth it.

  • Jan. 26, 2011, 12:40 p.m. CST

Re: "...a high res source tape"

    by WriteForTheEdit

That will likely never see the light of day, if such a thing still exists. I understand that Lucas has done everything in his power to ensure that the Holiday Special will never be seen again. And who can blame the guy?

  • Jan. 26, 2011, 12:41 p.m. CST

This was a product of it's time...

    by GeneralKael

I remember seeing this on TV during it's first airing. I was 8 years old and I thought it was awesome. Sadly, I had not seen Star Wars at that point so this was all I could get of it. I still clearly remember my parents discussing taking me to see Star Wars and then deciding not to, but they did buy me a lunch box(which had an X-Wing attacking a TIE fighter which I didn't understand but it sure looked cool). People who remember this time should remember the vast overload of Star Wars at the time - it was everywhere - Disco Star Wars on the Radio, toys, etc. For crying out loud it was the basis of a ShowCase Showdown on The Price is Right(with a winnibego in place of the Falcon) and one of the prizes was the entire line of action figures. Don't get me started on Donnie and Marie... I think the idea was to keep the momentum alive until the next movie, but they may have been limited by what they could show on TV in the timeslot, I dunno.

  • Jan. 26, 2011, 12:43 p.m. CST

Could they have afforded more lighting?

    by bubcus

After the brilliance of the cockpit in Empire Strikes Back, you just can't go back. And agreed, Holiday Special is far worse than the Star Wars prequels. But I didn't spend any money on the Holiday Special. Great pic, by the way.

I saw this in a bar in the pre-Internet days.

    by Royston Lodge

This guy had a VHS copy and there was a screening at Zaphod Beeblebrox (an awesome bar in Ottawa, Canada), along with the "Star Wars episode" of the Donnie & Marie Show. Today, you can just watch the thing via YouTube or download the torrent. Kids these days have no idea how much effort it took to be a complete geek before the Internet came along.

  • Jan. 26, 2011, 1:10 p.m. CST

The cartoon segment deserves some love.

    by Royston Lodge

It was produced by Canada's Nelvana Animation, which went on to do the Ewoks and Droids cartoons, as well as many other "beloved favourites" from the 80s. The Star Wars Holiday Special was their first big gig.

I clinch everytime. Even replaying it in my mind now. Ughh. How can anyone look at that and be fucking retarded enough to post that it's better than the prequels. Your fucking retarded. Art fucking Carney, that's all i gotta say. Prequels are alright enough but god damn the Clone Wars cartoon is just amazing and really does expand the mythology. You get the "cunning worror/great pilot" thing Obi-Wan talks about when describing Anakins character. He's pretty badass in the CGi series. Just watched the first couple seasons after winning the first two seasons in a local radio show contest. Yeah i duno why I bothered giving you background info on how I got them but I just couldn't let anyone think I bought them since giving $$$ to Lucas (or is it Luca$?) is looked down upon round these parts. It was Boba Fett's first appearance...

    by Bill Clay

...and the first appearance of Lucas selling out his movie for merchandising. I remember seeing this "new character who will be in the next movie" while watching the animated segment, then later finding a Boba Fett action figure at the local toy store. Lucas was whoring out Star Wars for toy sales way back in '78, it's not a new phenomenon particular to the prequels.

  • Jan. 26, 2011, 1:44 p.m. CST

I remember halfway watching this thing...

    by HarryKnowlesNonExistentInceptionReview

...Don't know why I didn't see it all the way through, but I was in and out of the living room (back in the day, that was the only place in the house that people kept a TV, and the thing had a wood cabinet and was friggin' HUGE) the entire hour for some reason. Maybe I was so horrified by the awfulness, I only remember it that was, like it was some kind of bad TV-related traumatic stress amnesia.

  • Jan. 26, 2011, 1:44 p.m. CST

    Loved the holiday special.

    by Kontarsky

And yeah, I think it is still better than the prequels. It reminds me of the late 70s. It's still got that obvious dated yet classy feel. ESB still had it and culminated it plus an excellent script and directing to become the best of the trilogy. ROTJ lost it. So yeah, fuck off if you don't like the holiday special. You're probably the same kind of people who complain every prequel was less-than-shit (though I'm seeing some of you like it more than the prequels), when come on, they were poorer in quality, but still better than the majority of sci-fi we've been given in the past 20 years. I'd take the holiday special ANY DAY before shit like that 3d clone wars cartoon, stupid EU novels, and so on. It's a pretty ballsy special. I guess I can see how it annoys the fuck out of fanboys because there's no lightsabers in it, are there? Or if there are, they barely make an appearance. Oh wait, these are the same fanboys who complain sabers were overused in the prequels (or used wrong). George has realised he can't make us happy, which is why he stopped giving a fuck a long time ago. Plus he thinks he is a god, like MadTV's interview revealed to us. All I'd change with the holiday special is make it a bit more serious, take out the Boba Fett cartoon (make it live action instead), add some characters who appear in ESB to help bridge the films, and have Jefferson Starship perform on the Executor instead of in the viewer-thing, because we need to see drunk Imperials at a rock concert. Film could end with them going to Hoth, or just a hinting of "we've found the perfect location for our new base...where the Empire will never think to find us" or some shit.

  • Jan. 26, 2011, 1:46 p.m. CST

I remember when this originally aired.

    by Bubba Gillman

I was one of the original SW geeks in grade school, having been 12 when the original was released. I remember telling the few kids who hadn't seen it how great it was, etc. Anyway, before the holiday special aired I and many others were hyped up for it. The next day in school I had to explain to those few kids who still hadn't seen SW that it was nothing like what had been unleashed on an unsuspecting public the night before.

    by darthwaz1

Putting Vader in full costume & cape for the end of E3. Total fan service/marketing decision. Some borg-looking makeshift suit would've been ideal for that scene. But Lucas had to go the full Vader costume route...becuz we needed that.

    by justmyluck

When this first aired, I was so excited to have "the Star Wars people" showing in my own house, I used the family Polaroid camera to take pictures of the T.V. screen. But, when the 'special' ended, even at my tender age I thought most of it sucked. I found a bootleg DVD of this many moons ago which proved my memories weren't just a bad hallucination. THE HOLIDAY SPECIAL really was a finely-tuned prediction for the Ewoks and Jar Jar Binks, which we should have seen coming after watching this.

    Lucas' own war on drugs

    by MegaBaz

Lucas lives in pointless denial over this. Anyone who wants to see it can see it quite easily, and pretty much everyone has heard of it, so not releasing it now is just pointless. Why not put it out on Bluray and give all the money to charity? It may be one of the most catastrophic tv shows of all time, but it would still sell a shitload. Do something good with it George! And hats off to poster Kontarsky for describing it as 'ballsy', that did make me smile!

  • Jan. 26, 2011, 3:31 p.m. CST

No, its not the same cockpit

    by Geekgasm

Its something thrown together in Century City or beautiful downtown Burbank or wherever they shot the rest of the holiday special. On the cheap. And I certainly enjoyed the Holiday Special more than the prequels. A product of the late 70s era of TV variety show madness, it is so tacky and tasteless that it can't not be entertaining. The prequels I generally find kind of soulless and boring. Incredibly well made technically and great to look at and listen to, but overall just kind of dull. I thnik I have watched the prequels on DVD once each. The Holiday Special gets dusted off at least once a year.

    by proevad

the other night. Hadn't seen it in years. Got 20 minutes in and had to turn it off. Guess I'm officially sick of everything to do with these movies.

Growing up I had vague memories of Chewbacca doing something Christmasy, but I could never quite place it until many years later I found out that this special did indeed exist. I was not making up memories. I saw part of it a couple of years ago and was blown away by how awful it was. I want it on DVD bad.

Make it so I've got the Star Wars Holiday Special on Bootleg Dvd, along with a behind the scenes documentary on ANH. Every Star Wars fan should see it, at least (and believe me, you will) once.

You can find torrents for the holiday special.

    by Bright_Boy

It's horrible. Weird singing and dancing, crude animation with things coloured incorrectly, Disco flavour, Cutesy wookiee characters, all apparently shot in front of old doctor who backdrops. I watch it every christmas, and then fall asleep with a gun in my mouth, my snores interrupted by racking sobs.

    Rifftrax of Holiday "Special"

    by menacingphantom

Like "special" olympics. Watched this when it first came out. I, as a ten year old, immediately recognized how horrible it was - not that that reveals any high level of aesthetic sensitivity on my part. The only way to tolerate this is to watch it with the rifftrax for it. That is truly sublime.
