Honey! C’mon over here, Sugar-Buns! This Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day just called me an asshole!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!
I unapologetically love Stephen King’s Maximum Overdrive. Granted, I saw it as a kid and loved the shit out of it and I’m also a giant Stephen King fan, but come on. It’s a silly movie about all motorized machines gaining life where a truck that has a giant Green Goblin head leads an assault on a small southern truck stop.
I mean, a soda machine kills a coach and a steamroller crushes little leaguers to death. How can anybody hate this movie?
Okay, I can see how someone can hate this movie, but I can’t. Call it nostalgia, call it fanboyism of the highest order, but fuck it. I love this movie.
Below you’ll see Stephen King working out one of the world-gone-awry sequences with his crew. Enjoy and click for the bigger version!

Tomorrow’s behind the scenes pic is no match for a good blaster at your side!

weird.
-
the non coked-out-of-his-tree version would have been a lot less fun.
-
As a 14 y.o. I wanted to see this in theaters, but I was overruled by my friends and we saw Top Gun instead. Not sure if that's why I've always hated Top Gun. But I never turn off Maximum Overdrive when it comes on!
-
or is it just me? could be me

... is a regional soft drink here in the Carolinas. Parts of M.O. were filmed here in NC. (Sundrop goes national in February and, no, I'm not promoting it)

best thing that came out of Maximum Overdrive was the AC/DC soundtrack
by Stifler's Mom
wish Iron Man 2 had lived up to its promise and gone all AC/DC.
-
It did for me. But prior to that, every time I clicked it, it put me back at the top of the page.
-
Just imagine it: the vehicles in 'Cars' come to life, kill people, and then they just stuff the interiors full of the dead bodies, and paint over the side windows with grey paint. Think about it...it makes perfect sense how in the world of 'Cars' there's some things that seem human-like.
-
i'm in winston-salem. bring it, stalkers.

I read somewhere that King put a huge bag of fake blood under the steam roller that runs over the little league kid. So when the kid gets squished, his head goes up in a huuuuuge explosion. King loved it and wanted to use it, but everyone on the set found it too disturbing and convinced him to cut it. I wonder if that footage exhists?
-
but the short story was really cool. The bit where the narrator imagines the whole world being paved by the machines so they can get everywhere is chilling. I love vintage King. If only they'd make a film of that awesome short story 'Dolan's Cadillac', i'd be as happy as a pig in shi - oh, wait..

maybe SK is one of the greatest writers of all time, but as a director he should be sent to the execution squad.
-
Wasn't there another movie almost just like this? Where the vehicles come alive and wreak havoc?
-
Who Made Who! The band should have done more songs for films!
-
...and great B-movie fun. if you don't get it, I can't help you.

'Duel' and 'Trucks' are similar, 'Trucks' is based on the same story.

This was the closest thing to a Spider-man movie in the 80's
by MST3KPIMP
Seeing Gobby's head on a truck was cool but also frustrating as it was a reminder that we still did'nt have a Spidey movie to watch.
-
All those stupid cars and that sun-drop can thing. What is that mountain dew?? How stupid is that? Anybody who likes this picture is dumb and also probly likes firefly and alien3
-

and HATED it. Thought it was complete crap. Not crazy bad enough to be funny, and not funny, and not scary, its just nothing. And so was the King tv version of The Shining! He needs to stay away from the cameras. Well except for Creepshow. He did directly write that screenplay, and I love it. He's fun as an actor in that too... I love Creepshow.
-
remember they used to play it almost nightly on TNT back in the 90's? I watched it on there as a kid, but I also rented the VHS once and watching the movie again years later I noticed a bunch of posters of nude women on the wall in one scene, something I never noticed as a kid lol (or maybe you couldn't make them out due to it being VHS?)
-
This is the behind-the-scenes pic where the first AD and the line producer were frantically trying to shoot the actual scene while a coked-up King, his dealer and some grip who "liked to party" were nearby playing with some toy trucks and pretending they were making MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE.

Be grateful that this was the only property King decided to take a drugged-up piss all over; in later interviews, he expressed that, if Rob Reiner hadn't decided to direct MISERY, he was planning on doing that one himself, too.
-
What the hell is Daley Thompson doing on set? Get him the hell out of here I'm trying to make a crappy movie!
-
We've had 3 Spider-Man movies and still haven't gotten a proper Green Goblin. Marc Webb better fucking deliver damn it.

that is all.

Maximum Overdrive might not be "Citizen Kane" but so what? It was a silly, but cool "B" movie. Yes it was a silly premise, but it is still better than any shit movie Sci-Fy puts out.
-
That was some funny shit! Been a reader for some time but have never bothered to reply to any talkbackers. Your post sir made me laugh out loud!
-
But remembered that's sugar tits.

as a PA. Stephen King signed the book Christine for a friend of mine. The African American guy with a mustache is a stuntman that also worked on Return of the Jedi. Stephen King is the guy in the red hat. THe blonde guy with the sundrop can in front of him is Rod Schumacher, brother of Martha Schumacher who ran DEG studios. Every day at 5:30, Stephen KIng would tell his assistant Stephanie that it was "beer 30" and she would bring him a tall glass of beer. The real director of this movie, in the technical aspect of it was 1st assistant director Tony Lucibello. Great guy. His son Grant works as an AD in a lot of movies now.
-
you jive motherfuckaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!
-
...but hated it in the theater. The short story was great, this wasn't. But one good thing about it, I saw it on a double feature with manhunter, which I knew nothing about. After the King flick, I almost left but decided to stick around a few minutes. Well, now I'm glad, because if the King film had been good, I may not have stuck around and missed my favorite of the hannibal Lector films. I recently bought MO on a double feature disc. Since I didn't have the high expectations I had the first time, I kinda enjoyed it.

Glad to see that it's getting some love here. Glad we wasted a behind the scenes pic of the day with this one. I watched this movie as a kid too and even it couldn't hold my attention on a Sunday afternoon with nothing to do. Love King, but...
-
member king saying that in the ads? great pic
-
I just imagine Stephen King reading these talkbacks, then going off to cry in a huge bag of money somewhere.

By the way, there is absolutely no defense for this movie whatsoever, but I refer to my above paragraph for anyone who thinks 25 years of critics and the numerous filmmakers who caught hell for 'fucking up" King's manuscripts prior to MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE jumping all over it like it was a flaming bag of cocaine and dogshit on their collective porch actually matters. King did not give a fuck. In fact, if there was a BTS shot of King sitting behind the camera in a pair of 30-day-old underpants, holding a loaded Colt .45 in one hand and a fistful of Emilio Estevez's hair in the other while forcing him to call up his brother's drug dealer for an oildrum full of blow and dead hookers, I would have said "Well, that figures."
-
The ice cream truck, the remote control car vs. dog, the soda machine, the Green Goblin Truck....this movie was awesome. I read King's bio. He said he's direct, but told producers or whoever that if they thought he sucked, or if he thought he sucked he'd get to back out, and they would have someone else finish this. Yeah, best commercial ever. As someone said "I'm going to scare the hell out of you."

There was a made for tv remake of this starring
by Grammaton Cleric Binks
Timothy Busfield. I didn't catch more than five minutes, so I've got nothing.
-
The made-for-Sci Fi (pre-"Syfy") remake had the small benefit of not being on drugs. Unfortunately, being on drugs was King's greatest asset on MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE, so, unless you're a die-hard Timothy Busfield fan, you thought "The Shining" miniseries by Mick Garris was superior to Kubrick's version or you always wondered what two hours of homicidal automobiles killing people looked like in a way that somehow makes them as boring as physically possible, you might wanna just give that one a pass.

Plus in Trucks the copter at the end is "good"
by Grammaton Cleric Binks
whereas in Maximum Overdrive based on King's short story "Trucks" all machines are evil.
-
Love this fucking movie. Gold with a capital B Grammaton, i don't know about that. There's a scene early on when miss lisa simpson and curtis (if you saw the movie AT ALL you remember his name thanks to her) are driving passed a bunch of broken down cars and they were flashing their lights. For some reason I always got the impression they were trying to give a warning.
-
I would assume that to mean that even he knew it was a piece of shit. Trucks was the worst story in that collection imho
-
Man, would I love to see that big fat dude munching down that lawn!!
-
assumption destroyed.
