Chris Hemsworth Teases THE AVENGERS Film, Hints At A 'Tangle' Between Thor And...

Published at:  Jan 24, 2011 8:48:52 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

Merrick here...

MTV has a brief chat with Chris Hemsworth about his initial perceptions of Joss Whedon's AVENGERS.  movie, which is now ramping up.  Note that a very minor (POTENTIAL AND UNSURPRISING) SPOILER may be included here.

Paraphrasing...

Hemsworth has read a very early draft of the script and says it's "incredible."

[EDIT]

"Reading the script - it was massive.  Everything about it was like, 'Oh my God'.  And I said to Joss, I said 'I don't know how you're going to shoot thing thing, but I'm excited to be on-board and let's give it a go."

When asked about whether there would be friction amongst The Avengers, and who his Thor characters rubs up against the most, Hemsworth hinted that there's a "heluva lot of friction" between characters in the film, noting that "in the comic books, him and Hulk have their fair share of tangles."

Thor vs. Hulk minus the Avengers Assemble moment, is the only reason to go see this film. Joss had damn well better at least delivery that. I still say Joss does something Buffyeseque like killing Widow or someone for shock value. Hopefully, he makes enough to stop the Buffy reboot.

The problem with the Avengers film...

    by phimseto

is that a. it should be like 2 1/2 hours long at least and b. like the Batman films feature a lot more character interaction and a lot less action. You've hired great actors for the film. The biggest tension in the film is from how they interact (typical men on a mission stuff). Develop a script that gives them that interplay. You could have a whole script based on just getting the Hulk under control and coaxing Iron Man out of retirement (or whatever that hook will be). Unfortunately, what we'll probably get is incessant action because the money counters think that's what people want. What people want is to see a good film and to care about what goes on.

    by kevred

Hopefully with this bunch, it will be, but don't forget to include enough air in the film to let the characters breathe a little, and have some fun with it. It's a comic book. You can give it gravity, but give it the same no-apologies fun that made people love the property in the first place.

And, as phimseto rightfully said, give us characters we care about. It doesn't have to take long. Didn't take long in Predator or Aliens. Take the time to invest us in everyone, and give us a scenario where we care about those involved.

Wait, I thought the Hulk-as-villain rumor was supplanted by the Skrulls-and-possibly-Kree-as-villain rumor. Of course, these movies always have to have multiple villains, so maybe they're chasing both for most of the movie before Banner gets clued in to the alien invasion or SHIELD decides they need the Hulk to smash the Skrulls or blah blah blah. All I know for sure is that the first time we hear "Avengers Assemble!" it'll be Steve and Tony saying it simultaneously, each thinking they're the leader, then breaking off to glare at each other while we pause to give the audience a chance to laugh. Tony is so full of himself!

    by radioflyer

There are just too many "supernatural" elements and lead characters in this to take it seriously as a "film". I imagine that they will focus on one or two of the Avengers (Iron Man and Captain America, I'd bet) and relegate the rest to background.
If not done carefully (I envision a sort of superpowered "Platoon", with one of the younger Heroes joining and becoming disillusioned with the other, more jaded members and creepy vibe of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Otherwise, it will be a two hour version of that Saturday Night Live sketch with John Belushi as Hulk stinking up the bathroom at an Avengers party.

it would be cool, but no loki controlling the hulk since he's a villain that was already defeated by just 1 of the Avengers. they'll need someone new and more threatening so they can use this as part of the plot. putting in Loki for just that one part would be awesome for us comic lovers, but for the general public it would seem odd.

Mistake to make Avengers after these other ones

    by emperor_was_a_jerk

What if people don't like Thor or Captain America? What if kids don't buy the toys? Iron Man 2 left a lot to be desired and they had two strikes with HULK already. What if Thor and Cap do the same or worse? Putting all the heroes of bad movies in ONE movie sounds like a nightmare.

They should do Avengers FIRST, then see what characters break out and are the most interesting to watch on screen then give them their own movie. It may not line up with the linear timeline they are trying to maintain but it would make for better movies I think.

You need the entire Earth in peril

    by voiceofsaruman

Comics history be damned, you don't form the Avengers (and make a movie out of it) just because the Hulk is in a bad mood and needs to be brought down.

The only way the movie will work is with the heavy cosmic stuff - Kree/Skrull, alien invasion...something huge. Something to make the stakes seem uber-high, so that not only do you accept that a Norse god needs to pitch in to help, but you also don't notice that they could only give Bruce Banner 30 seconds of screen time.

If they avoid this alien invasion route, they're screwed. You need the Avengers to take on not only a super-villain but also an army of some kind. Iron Man fighting a bunch of robots didn't thrill in IM2 and shouldn't be tried again. Red Skull and Cosmic Cube have possibilities, but who are Thor and the Hulk going to fight? Nazis?

Sorry kids, it's aliens for the win. An early scene of Thor vs. Hulk? - fine, should be nice fun action and FX, but nobody really cares, there's nothing really at stake there.

In LXG, they spend the start of the movie tracking Mr. Hyde. He changes back into Dr Jekyl after a big scrap, then later in the movie, he transforms again in the interests of helping the team defeat certain failure.

Substitue Mr Hyde for the Hulk, and I think you've got the basis for the opening act of the avengers, as Fury assembles the team to track down a rampaging hulk. Later, Hulk joins in to help the Avengers defeat... whatever. Wasn't the bad guy supposed to be Thanos? Didn't we see the infinity gauntlet at comic con?

    Here is the story:

    by ultratron

A spaceship lands on the white house lawn. It's the classic saucer/illuminati shape shifting demon type designed to fool mankind into thinking demons are just aliens. We see Mephisto in hell saying everything is going according to plan. Just then Galactus begins lowering himself into hell and absorbing it. Hell begins to break apart and pour forth in many dimensions. The silver surfer blasts a hole in the space/time continuum and allows the Kree access to our planet instantly with an invasion force that immediately begins combating the illuminati demon saucers and the geneticly engineered to look like alien occupants that they were gong to fool us with. Meanwhile Deadpool has been abducted by a real race of aliens who simply want to anal probe him. Deadpool escapes by chewing his arm off and beating the entire ship of aliens to death with it. Deadpool then manages to gain control of the alien craft and crashes it into Stark's house to introduce his character for a spinoff series of films. Meanwhile the illuminati have been exposed and defeated. Galactus finishes absorbing hell until Mephisto is just floating free in an empty void. Then the Marvel zombies led by reed richards eat Mephisto and Galactus and turn their sights on Thanos and Lady Death herself. Their insatiable hunger is the only true constant in the universe. The movie ends with Zombie Hulk biting off silver surfer's head like a lead figurine and the marvel zombies absorb the power cosmic and take down Galactus. Yes I said they already ate him but they really eat him this time and then take off on a universal eating frenzy. Meanwhile the poor, hapless humans who have been meat puppets and genetically ass-fucked by Mephisto's evil plot all these years begin to just wish it all away and pretend it doesn't exist because it's a life filled with unnatural bullshit they'll hear nothing more of. The movie ends with Stark screaming demon sounds as he's initiated into the Skull and Bones and we realize Mephisto is still at it. He has a new hell to create and earth is just the place

    by jobacca

Think about it...he's been in every Marvel movie. Watching the heroes. Stalking them. The Avengers should have a moment when they all realize that they've all encountered the same elderly man. Have Stan Lee give the big villain monologue and then morph into The Super Skrull. Greatest.Cameo.Ever!!!!!

    Pretty damn dumb, though.

Way-way up there on the dumbness scale. Or down there. However one measures dumbness.

Somewhere between Batman & Robin and 300.

    by ultratron

language contains the original tone, words and meaning. Additionally the audio contains the highest fidelity because it is the original recording. So if you want them off it's time to learn a new language. Please learn something at least because you would have to have literally shit for brains to think Avatar was a dumb movie. You just called the entire world of moviegoers dumb. It's the #1 movie ever. Avatar is not some amorphous thing with follwers on different sides of a coin. It is simply the #1 with nothing else competing for the spot except another incredible film by the same guy. The people have spoken. Now go get your fucking shine box.

    by goldentribe

I can't believe he is the guy they selected to replace Edward Norton! I don't even hate him, he was ok in Shutter Island, I just think it's a ridiculously bad casting choice and it's going to fuck up the movie. Hopefully Hulk is CGI most of the movie and looks nothing like a big motion-capture Mark Ruffalo.........

    He already said that

    by rahtard

The first half of the film is Thor, Catain America, Hulk, and Iron Man all beating the crap out of each other and the second half is them learning how to become a team. He said it in an interview last week, so obviously when he said that over a week ago, I assumed that Thor and Hulk would trade blows.

Something tells me that these team up fights are going to feel like Fantastic Four. There's no way to make them look good.

theres 3 things that really make me dislike AICN. when there is blatant selling out from the site owner ("GI Joe action figure! I love the movie!"), unwarranted bannings ("dont speak off topic, even though we never said you couldnt"), and lastly, people with multiple handles...

seriously, what is the point of either changing your handle everytime you feel you came up with a "clever" handle?

people having multiple handles takes the fun out of having discussions, because you dont know if youre chatting with the "dumber" version of the saddest person ever to grace the internet.

EVERYONE here likes DVADE because he has been around for a long time. you know who he is and he puts thoughts into his posts. whereas we have Loser Who Shall Not Be Named having conversations with himself, only to hope that he can be revered by strangers?

look, I like having compliments as much as the next TBer, but to go as far as loggin in then loggin out just to compliment myself is VERY SAD

I think I understand when DVADE says braindrain (Im mad I have to call him by his real handle now, seeing as LOSER WHO SHALL NOT BE NAMED decided to make a new handle based off the nickname I gave him) is harmless. he is just a idiot but thats the most trouble he can cause. but at least hes not going around sucking his own dick as different personas.

so... braindrain, I dont wish death upon you anymore. youre just a idiot, and i should just accept it. whereas that loser... wtfuckers.

with that said, Im gonna really watch who I choose to engage on here for now on. I will not give that loser anymore time because if i do, "they" will feel like they won

And if you actually had a clue you'd see Australia has given the world plenty of things in the medical and technological fields.

Well is very nice to see in action to the avengers, but for me with Hulk in the wrong side, you have to do the first number with loki, and in the right side gigant man and the wasp with the cap sticked in.
For me you have to get somebody more menazing like Thanos, Kang or Ultron with a script alike to the infinity gauntlet ( very complex movie, but this is Hollywood, complex) and a plus good boys more interesting like Warbird,( Ms Marvel) Vision and Wanda.
this is a one millon of histories you can do

    Speaking of the banhammer...

    by asimovlives

... why did that happen? I never understood the reasons for what happend that caused the mass banning from last year.

I have some names as vilaisn for THE AVENGERS:

    by asimovlives

Jar Jar Abrams, Bobby Coño Orci and Alex Klutzman. Their superpowers is their turn anything they touch to shit. Only superheroes with superpowers can stand in their way.

    Asi, re banhammer

    by yourstepdaddy

some people were (possibly) rightfully banned for makin crude jokes about Sally Menke. that I can sorta understand.

but then I got banned for doing what I usually do in a non-Sally Menke TB. so, as to why I got banned, I have no idea. I guess Beaks just got banhammer happy

I will say though, some people got banned because they questioned the bannings in the Menke obit AFTER Beaks explicity said, "blah blah blah, off topic posts will be banned". they were given a warning but wanted to challenge the warning which resulted to their banning. I wont say who that was, but I could understand why Beaks felt it was necessary to ban him

if a cop tells you to stop pissing, and you keep pissing and defy his orders, I kinda think you deserve being thrown into the back of a squad car.

    by yourstepdaddy

then a lot of other people got banned for expressing their outrage of us getting banned... but its all in the past now.

    BUT WE WILL NEVER FORGET!

    PS: fuck you Beaks
    PPS: dont ban me Beaks

What can I say? Don't roll with the big boys if you can't handle trouble.

i have a hard time imagining a completely cgi hulk having a cool fight with a real thor. wont look good. and if thor is cgi then that will be ugly as hell. long cgi golden locks and everyone running around like they are weightless, i'm worried
