THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Casts Catwoman And Bane!!
Nordling here.
I'll let the press release speak for itself:
Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” She will be starring alongside Christian Bale, who returns in the title role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Christopher Nolan stated, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.”
In addition, Tom Hardy has been set to play Bane. Nolan said, “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.” Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven. “The Dark Knight Rises” is slated for release on July 20, 2012. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
Well, I don't know what this means as far as Nolan's "realistic" take on the Batman mythos, but the fact that they brought Catwoman and Bane in means... well, I don't know what it means. In BATMAN AND ROBIN Bane was a really stupid idea, but knowing Nolan they're likely going for something different, and with Tom Hardy playing him it's sure to be a formidable opponent for Christian Bale. As far as Anne Hathaway playing Catwoman, I wonder how the character will be used in this as well. In one of the comic storylines Kyle was actually related to Falcone (Tom Wilkinson from the first film) and I'm curious if they'll use that angle since they still went with the crime angle in THE DARK KNIGHT.
Pretty big news casting wise. What say you, Talkbackers?
Nordling, out.

Crap villains!
-
Interesting characters for Nolan to choose. Look forward to seeing them in the Nolan-verse.
-
I also heard they changed the title to Batman Finishes.
-
what does your talkback name mean anyway?
-
i didnt see this coming
-
I was middling about the Black Mask but Bane is a really, really terrible idea. Even the Penguin or Riddler is easier to pull off than Bane. Hell, go with Hush even.
-
Knightfall: Now thats a story i want to see
-
I'm not excited...
-
But I put my trust in Nolan. *Assuming this press release is the real deal.
-
That sounds like a horrible idea, but Nolan will undoubtedly make it great. I have 100% confidence in him. I've never read any of the comics. Who is Bane?
-
Did not get ANY of the characters right. Tom Hardy is good news as anyone who saw Bronson knows. Although the mask could hide some of the crazy if they keep it.
-
C'mon the guy is famous for one thing -- breaking Batman's back. so one of two things happens, he doesn't break batman's back, making fanboys implode from rage orrrrr.... This is how Nolan exits the franchise, by snapping Bruce's back at the end. Predictable all around.
-
I am not an Anne Hathaway fan but if they're taking the Catwoman approach, I hope it's her as a cat burglar and NOT what we've seen in the Batman Returns and Catwoman films. As for Bane, a buddy of mine who was a huge Batman fan, freaked out over the portrayal in Batman & Robin. I am told the character is supposed to be smart. I'm not thrilled with the villain choices or casting but I'll have to trust that Nolan knows what he's doing.
-
But hopefully it will be much better..fingers crossed.
-
the return of Ras Al Ghul (sic). Would have liked to have seen Liam in there closing out that storyline....

At least they didn't pick that annoying chick from Juno
by Bobo_Vision
You know, that girl with no range whatsoever. Her.
-
Especially after the "Arkham City" trailer. Still, they could probably do whatever they wanted with Bane. I kind of doubt he's going to get to break Batman's back though. I like Anne Hathaway, but she's pretty far from what I picture for Selina Kyle. Then again, Nolan is such a cold fish that I wasn't really expecting that much raw sex appeal in this Batman film anyway.

Interested in Bane as a physical and intellectual match
by Can_You_Fly_Bobby
against Batman. Would like to see more Batman detective work in DKR. Hopefully the Catwoman storyline will be intruiging.
-
Also, bring on the next wave of "The Dark Knight is my penis" jokes.
-
In Aronofsky's much better vision to be released in about 5 years?
-
Not a Hathoway hater but as CATWOMAN??? Don't know bout that. And Hardy as Hugo. Strange was much more intriguing. Of course Nolan's take on Bane is too, I guess....
-
and catwoman= Emily Blunt
-
Probably the single most poorly drawn splash page in a comics mega-event ever.
-
I knew it
-
Fucking boring ass villian who had his "15 minutes" during the Knightfall saga (Same goes for Doomsday) and should have been long gone from the DCU.Even his appearances on the Animated series and Movies was lackluster. I'm down with Catwoman, but there's got to be a more suitable villian other than Backbreaker Bane. Deadshot perhaps? WTF
-
I thought Riddler would have been the next logical criminal, but hey. Nolan has yet to make a bad film. I trust him.
-

Anybody who thinks Bane is stupid or overly fantastical...
by ROBRAM89
...has a Joel Schumacher movie playing in their head, not a comic book.
-
And it still beats Nuclear Man. But Bane, huh? Weird...
-
I knew I wasn't going to get what I wanted but something about Anne Hathaway puts me off. Although she is a talented girl she just comes across as really grating. Eh.... I really don't know what to think. They could have made a much worse choice I guess. And I will forever admit to thinking Heath Ledger was all wrong for the Joker. So I trust Nolan. I guess I should just be glad it's rolling.</p> <p>But Tom Hardy is one hot motherfucker. So I'm glad he's in it. Who was Bane in the old one? That steroid thing?</p>
-
This is the death of the Batman Franchise. Mark my words!
-
kattie holmes should come back and play door man
-
If used correctly. He's a hulking beast, but with a brain. I have faith that Nolan won't do to Bane, what Raimi did to Venom (the fact that nobody from That 70's Show has been cast yet is a good sign).
-
Could work.
-
inception was boring, so was tdk, don't get the rabid defense of chris nolan's work and yeah bane being in this is just weird
-
Jan. 19, 2011, 12:06 p.m. CST
Well, Bronson was pretty much the "realistic" version of Bane anyway.
by THE_CHOPPAH
-
I could live with the decision to go ahead with Catwoman... but Bane? Dammit, I was just imagining so many cool Hugo Strange scenarios, too. I was willing to plunk down a hundred bucks to the get "Legends of the Dark Knight" Hugo Strange paperback. Freakin' Bane, man? He's hardly what I consider to be old school classic Batman villain. I hope Team Nolan knows what they're doing.
-
well, I don't know. I got that funny feeling too. It's just because these sites pretended to know what was going on and fucked everyone's expectations up because they were so off in their predictions and presumptions about Prey and Hugo Strang. Add to that, the fact that Bane is a character that worked best in a fantasy world and we got a problem. Still, I think it will end up being something cool. Gotta have faith after the first two were so good.
-
Might Hathaway only be playing Selina Kyle and not Catwoman? In Nolan we trust.
-
Jan. 19, 2011, 12:09 p.m. CST
Anne Hathaway? Ha! The only true Catwoman is Julie Newmar, Lee Meriwether or Eartha Kitt..
by Axl Z
And why doesn’t Batman dance anymore.. Remember the Batusi? Seriously thou, looking forward to this. Gonna be a massive year for nerds next year with Avengers, James Bond, and all that other nerdy crap coming out.. Sheldon would be creaming his pants!

I used to be called Chuffy, which was a character on the British comedy`The Armstrong And Miller`show, then changed it to`Chuffster`....then I forgot my password,so had to change it to ChuffsterUK-dull eh?

a combo character. instead of becoming batman
by LookWhosTalkbackingNow
he becomes something similar, but is called bane.
-
At least about Bane (I'm not the guy's biggest fan, but hopefully Nolan will make it work) On the other hand, I can't wait to see Hathaway's Catwoman. It's all very interesting. At least I can safely assume that we won't get a repeat of the 'Batman and Robin' Bane.
-
Out of all the villains in Batman's Rogues Gallery to choose from and you pick Bane??? You want to end your trilogy with a one dimensional character as your villain? Horseface Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, that is another WTF! Emily Blunt or Eva Green would've been waaaay better. I'm not excited about Dark Knight Rises anymore.
-
I'm guessing he'll be a roid raging thug. So many great villains all thrown to the side to accommodate Nolan's "anti-scifi" stance. I have to admit I was really hoping they could shoehorn in Azrael somehow.
-
... a cocktail of PCP and Steroids in this version? Just guessin..
-
That's an official WB press release.
-
I laughed and laughed.
-
pussy...cats
-
I was expecting Hush or Hugo Strange. Bane is an excellent character if done correctly. He's someone who's just as intellegent as Bruce Wayne but has a hell of a lot more brawn. The B&R version was just a complete travesty. I think we'll be seeing a more realistic version of drug abuse with him though and not the green veined, muscle enlarging version we've seen before. Anne Hathaway as Catwoman doesn't really bother me either way but i'm sure she'll do fine. Would have preferred to see Talia al Ghul but i have enough faith in Nolan for him to not totally fuck it up. Looking forward to this.
-
No way was i seeing this. I thought it would be Hugo Strange before and a year ago i thought it would be Riddler for sure. Great casting and looking forward to it. And please cast Anne as Spiderwoman somewhere.
-
Truth.
-
If you're not going to then why the hell post?...I for one can't wait to see it although I would've loved to see Heath Ledger(RIP) play the joker and continue that storyline
-
the speculation this announcement will generate will be entertaining. Can't wait to read all the poorly thought-out (and the handful of clever) theories about what the plot will be.
-
Bane is the best villain in the Batman rogue's gallery who isn't just a second-rate Joker, a la Riddler. Isn't Hardy a bit skinny, though? Still, good characters played by good actors -I think it will work. As for the "Spidey 3" vibe of oo many villains, Nolan did fine with Joker and Two-Face, no? He's earned enough chits to make me excited about the possibilities.
-
Amen. Nolan's films are all filled with faulty logic, made to make unintelligent people feel smart, and center around people who are either boring, reprehensible or both. He's the equivilent of Hitchcock, without a Psycho or the Birds. He should leave the philosphy and psychology to Malick and Aronofsky.
-

I can't wait to here Batman's garbled sweet barks whispered to Catwoman
by _Venkman
But Bane eh? I'll wait and see - at least Nolan has a proven track record.
-
Now if only they could recast the role of The Director with someone other than Nolan.
-
Nobody liked Ledger as Joker. Nobody liked Bale as Batman. Get over it, people. Bane is a perfect 'realistic' villain. We've already seen the issues of chemical enhancement addressed with Scarecrow, so why wouldn't we see Bane as a juicehead impervious to pain and incredibly fast and strong? His backstory fits in with this world. Nolan has carte blanche. And no, we're unlikely to get a trilogy as good as this ever again. There was a reason Aronofsky's vision never got made - it just wasn't very good. In Nolan We Trust.
-
Unlike TDK which introduced Joker in the midst of that brilliantly staged bank heist as - TA DA - the villian of the piece, will we get back story and origins (sooo boring and done-to-death) of Catwoman and Bane? Harvey Dent was an integral character in TDK, and the subplot theme of the movie itself. This just smacks tacking on villians for villains sake...we shall see.
-
This will be the first film of hers I have any interest in seeing though, so I hope her acting is up to snuff. Dunno how Nolan will get either of these characters to work in his universe but I expect the best from him
-
She was fucking DELICIOUS back then. Anne Hathaway....? Cute and has nice boobs, but I'll just have to hope I am pleasantly surprised by her performance as Catwoman. Low expectations. Tom Hardy, however, brings a lot to the table. For gosh sakes GO RENT "BRONSON"!
-
Ah well.
-
Makes my Dark Knight rise. Just sayin'.
-
Jan. 19, 2011, 12:17 p.m. CST
Rent "Bronson" and you will have NO qualms about Tom Hardy in ANY role.
by jawsfan
-
Hathaway's character will be introduced as Selina Kyle and will be eventually revealed as Talia Al Ghul. Nolan, I see the Pledge, you've foreshadowed the Turn, we'll see about the Prestige.
-
I would´ve loved to see Nolan´s version of The Penguin.... oh well, I´m sure he´ll do a great job as always. And I´ll be there opening day.
-
Everyone was up in arms when they chose Heath to portray the Joker. What happened with that? Oh yeah. It wound up being amazing. They haven't even shot the movie yet nor do you know the story line. Calm down. As I have said before, if you think you could do better, GO AHEAD!
-
When I see people hating on the Nolanverse I'm reminded of him.
-
I was hoping it was gonna be him or a couple others, Hardy will make him fucking awesome!...don't even mention Batman & Robin, just go read knightfall. I'm suprised based on the last minute rumours he's not Hugo Strange, but very, very happy. Weird & takes balls in some respects to introduce Bane this early and knowing what he's s'posed to have done in the comics... i lke that alot, this will be the Kraven like bounty hunt to end them all!. <p>Ann Hathaway as Catwoman is one i'm just gonna trust Nolan on, i like her and everything...
-
If you're going to get someone over 40 to play Catwoman, you might as well bring back Michelle Pfeiffer, or Julie Newmar.
-
...and not that lumbering idiot henchman take on Bane from BATMAN AND ROBIN whose only line was "Bomb..." repeated over and over. I can see it now...End of Act One, Bane breaks Batman's back. Act Two, Bruce and Selina track down the cure. Act Three, Batman recovers and kicks Bane's ass.

what happened with Moviemack?
by Lloyd Bonafide the Korean War Veteran
-
so much discontent. it's like people forget that Nolan pretty much only makes great movies. You may not like to choice of villains, but anyone who thinks they won't be handled well hasn't been paying attention.
-
without breaking Batman's back.
-
Jan. 19, 2011, 12:23 p.m. CST
Moviemack? He's the guy that hated Batman Begins, right?
by rev_skarekroe
Because it had things like Scarecrow riding a horse, which for some reason was impossible in his mind. He was the Asimovlives of Nolan's Batman films.
-
If Nolan goes along the comic story line, Bane would escape from prison RELEASING old foes of the Batman. That could be really cool. I have high hopes of this.
-
Hardy is a bit of a pudge, not much of a gladiator body. Much better choice of a villain than the Riddler or Hugo Strange.
-
"Cool Party!"
-
He was this guy who made it his job to hate Batman Begins as soon as it was announced. He predicted utter failure. Constantly.
-
At least last time I saw her in something. If Selina Kyle is going to play a love interest I think she looks a little young for Christian Bale. Eh, what do I know? In Nolan We Trust.
-
He can't stop surprising me.
-
behind "The Hobbit" and "The Avengers" as the most anticipated movies of 2012. Sorry. Kind of let down. I hope its good.

If there's one thing Nolan knows, it's female characters...
by Chewtoy
I mean, Rachel Dawes was such a homerun in both prior Batman films, right? The chemistry between her and Bruce was palpable. Okay, so... no. He's rubbish at male/female relationships and totally about obsessive male/male ones. But at least Selina Kyle will be in this film to assure audiences that Batman is totally not gay.
-
It says she is Kyle. They list Bale as Batman?Bruce Wayne. If she was playing Catwoman, she would be listed the same way....
-
But hey, Nolan is the master of this stuff. I'm sure it will be interesting.
-
I've wanted Bane since the first Nolan Bat-flick. Who gives a fuck about Batman & Robin? Are you kidding me? Read the comics, watch the cartoon. Bane was one of Bats' most formidable villains. I doubt he'll use "Venom" in the Nolan movie...but I'm sure he will be just as brilliant and calculating. Catwoman: Hathaway is probably the best choice. Certainly better than Angelina Jolie or Keira Knightley. Not a villain I preferred, but getting her into the movie was probably unavoidable. I also believe Nolan knows what he's doing. I look forward to this.
-
like Deadshot i know he could seem a bit 2 dimensional or 1 trick, but really if you read Knightfall and think about it in the Nolanverse and likely places to go as a 3rd/final chapter, theres a lot to get out of him, Hardy is the perfect choice to give the raw unrellenting energy, charisma & edge to such a guy. Remeber when Begins went under 'Intimidation Game'? This is gonna be 'Justice is Might' thrown at Bats.
-

Fanboys everywhere are googling Bane/Catwoman comic storylines.
by chadiwack
-
Is Nolan doing an interpretation of Knightfall? Here's hoping, cos Bane is one of the most intelligent villains in Batman's rogues gallery - NOT the hulking simpleton they made him out to be in Batman & Robin!!! I can see that people are already dismissing the film based on this announcement - business as usual then.

This is one of those talkbacks where it's fun to just...
by WriteForTheEdit
...stand back and watch the fur fly, so to speak. (BTW, Anne Hathaway makes my pink, helmeted knight rise...)
-
In Nolan's hands, Bane will be a force who can can overpower Batman physically and match him mentally! This is awesome news!!!!!! Hathaway as Catwoman... not so much.
-
Jan. 19, 2011, 12:29 p.m. CST
People forget that originally Bane wasn't just a muscle man.
by rbatty024
He was able to break Batman's back not because he had a punch of souped up steroids (although I'm sure those helped) but because he first strategically tired Batman out by releasing all the Arkham inmates. At his best, Bane is a shrewd and calculating villain. Of course, he hasn't always been written this way, but he has a ton of potential as Batman's adversary.
-
Anne Hathaway as Catwoman is a joke! She's not sultry or catty in ANY way. And Bane?! What a waste. Second rate character, shoulda gone for Hugo Strange and educated film goers to one of Batman's best villians. Penguin would have been interesting too. Of course Nolan won't know this because he doesn't go on the internet. But maybe WARNER BROTHERS will pay attention to these talkbacks.
-
Maybe Nolan envisions Selina / Catwoman as Julie Newmar and he thinks Hathaway has that look to her. I like the idea of getting back to her as a cat burglar with a heart of gold. She's a shadowy version of Batman, which is what draws the two of them together.
-
Jan. 19, 2011, 12:31 p.m. CST
shut up with the Hugo fucking strange bullshit. seriously. he blows.
by THE_ONE_MAN_GANG
although the character will prob be awesome in arkham asylum 2
-
He's a bit fixated on Scandal Savage even though she plays for the other team, but still a potential force to be reckoned with. I'm curious if Nolan will bring in any of Bane's sense of honor and loyalty that Gail Simone added to the character.
-
...just like George Clowney (sic) did in Robin & Batman. Nothing like a healthy sense of realism in your Nolan Batman film.
-
There is nothing that says Hathaway will play Catwoman. She may simply play Kyle, as Wayne's love interest. You guys are jumping to conclusions...
-
Maybe the plot will involve Bane forcing Batman into some kind of showdown.
-
Looking forward to seeing Nolan's next Bat-flick on OPENING WEEKEND. Everyone else here, too? Good luck getting your ticket. My advice: Show up EARLY.
-
Still one of my favourite Batman comics. He was born in prison, and immediately had to serve a lifetime for his fathers sins. Growing up to be the baddest motherfucker on the block. Tom Hardy has proven he can play a badass prisoner in Bronson and I also have a lot of faith in Anne Hathaway as Catwoman. Wether it's Ella Enchanted or Brokeback Mountain, she consistently gives great performances suiting the character. Nolan's Batman films will be regarded as one of the great trilogies in the years to come. I'm absolutely certain!!!
-
hopefully Nolan will do it better. Although Bane is kind of a coward. He let all the other villians beat Batman down first and then he snuck into Wayne Manor and broke his back when he was unable to even try and defend himself.
-
At least the lot who are crying foul and thinking this will suck just by the news above. Do you honestly think Nolan's going to introduce some one-dimensional, cartoon-ish Bane into this series as he's established it?<p> read the press release, for fuck sake: "...excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies." NEW INTERPRETATION. so Bane is a jumping-off point, it's not gonna be what you saw in B&R, or even in the comics. You can bet it'll be a more realistic take that's in keeping with the universe he's established, and chances are really good he will present a truly formidable opponent for Bats...
-
but hathaway is interesting. i'm VERY surprised they're taking on Catwoman since i don't know how you pull that off exactly. although if she's a burgler who slips through security systems b/c she's wafer thin i guess that could work.
-
Nothing. But. Win. If they actually follow the Long Halloween/Dark Victory arcs, even better but for now - so hot... so hot...
-

Anne Hathaway? Does she start as a cute, bumbling villainess at first?
by impossibledreamers
Then Julie Andrews turns her into a bad ass?
-
HA. Like listening to fanboys made them the BILLIONS off this Nolan franchise.
-
About goddamn time. And Tom Hardy fucking rules
-
the blowy uppy of Rachael Dawes. Still, anyone feel a little underwhelmed?
-
I cannot see her as "that" big of a threat. Bane however, is a whole different story.
-
We've seen Bruce pull of his shirt with bruises and cuts all over... but we've never seen his Batman get the crap *really* kicked out of him. So, he gets in a tussle with Bane here, who probably matches or beats him in skill (if not in strength... Hardy is a little small to do the big hulking Bane). So, what if he hurts Batman so bad, that when they do some x-rays back at the mansion/batcave (which he's sure to trick out with a lot of medical equipment)... they notice a fracture in his spine. He's still walking... but his back has technically been broken. Too much strain, will paralyze him, so he can't continue... (but he must because he's Batman). NOW we get a nice chance to see Batman fight someone using his BRAINS to defeat the enemy. Before, he used the brains to FIND the guy, but used his skill and brawn to take him down. I think it could work nicely... but I'm willing to bet Nolan has something even better in mind up his sleeve. He could cast the Mad Hatter and the freaking TimeKeeper... I'd still trust him to tell a great story. It's Nolan, people... he hasn't made a bad movie yet. And he's hit Batman out of the park twice already. This is no time to suddenly say, "Oh it sucks! What a travesty!" (That's what everyone said about Ledger as the Joker. Then, everyone has eaten those words. Nolan has earned the trust.
-
this version of Bane. Venom is basically a more intense version of a performance enhancing drug. It's not that far removed from Nolan's real world. I don't think we will get the tubes coming out of his neck, but I think Nolan will be able to fit venom somewhere into his story.
-
I wonder if Nolan wouldn't prefer an all-male cast.
-
Anne Hathaway? Bane? WTF Christopher Nolan? The Dark Night was an amazing high point for super hero movies . . . and now . . . ugh, I just threw up in my mouth a little. It tastes like disappointment.
-
Jan. 19, 2011, 12:48 p.m. CST
so spanish hulk is more realistic than penguin or riddler??
by Tarantinos_Forehead
I know. I know. "In Nolan we trust" but when a film maker makes so many great movies they're bound to make some crappy ones. Tim Burton (Mars Attacks) Barry Sonnenfeld (Wild Wild West) Kubrick (Eyes Wide Shut) Tarentino (Kill Bill 2) and so on.
-
I mean COME ON, look at that woman, she would've been perfect. We already know how she looks in skin tight black leather. Not that I wouldn't mind seeing Hathaway in a black bodysuit either, but she just doesn't seem right. Of course many thought Heath wasn't right for The Joker either when his casting was announced, so we'll see I guess.
-
No, the most poorly drawn splash shot in an epic comic is Dan Jurgans' GOD AWFUL Superman and Doomsday tandem punch shot in Superman 75. Fucking so incredibly awful. Jurgans is such a hack, and that shot nailed it home for me. As for this news, I loath Catwoman as a character, and as long as she doesn't have any physical confrontations with Batman (unless he beats the shit out of her, the only realistic end to that fight), I'll be able to see past my dislike for her. Bane on the other hand is an interesting choice. Possibly created by GPD to go after Batman?
-
She will be portrayed as the love interest/female equal, and her role will be more of anti-hero/pseudo-sidekick come act 3. I bet Talia is in the movie, too, and we'll get a big fight between the two of them...
-
if he wants to keep his Batman movies in the world of reality, which he has been able to do, for the most part, with BB and TDK. Will they include the tubes pumping Venom in Banes' head? Will Bane be wearing the wrestling mask? With Catwoman, I hope they just make her a delusional hot chick that is good at gymnastics, and not some sort of resurrected hot chick with super cat powers. I will always give Nolan the benefit of the doubt, and he hasn't let us down yet......but my oh my this is at first read a tough one to swallow. Part of me felt that it would be great to have Lucius Fox set up as the villain in this last film, since he felt Batman went too far in TDK, and maybe in the third one he tries to bring him back.
-
I don't like the idea of Catwoman in the Nolanverse, but I'm fine with Selina Kyle. Not too sure about Bane. Don't really know a great deal about him other than he breaks Batmans back. Hmm. Should be interesting to see how this all plays out. Grab your popcorn.
-
The Great Exalted Lord Nolan has been forsaken! CHOPPED.
-
Jesus read the fucking press release. They name Bane which is the villains name but not Catwoman. Just Selina. They mention Barbara Gordon in The Dark Knight yet we ain't getting Batgirl(albeit she looks 10 years old) so just fucking chill. Maybe there are more announcements conerning villains
-
Bane? Wasn't expecting that, but considering Hardy's work in Bronson, it seems almost unsurprising. My guss is that Nolan seems to changing up TDK's hero/villain dynamic, possibly going for someone to go toe-to-toe with Bats on a physical level. I think the fact Nolan says 'new interpretation' is the most exciting thing. He's clearly not going for a giant mutant roid-freak and something that'll work in his world; perhaps less physically imposing than the comic character but perhaps fuelled in a different way? The Hathaway casting works for me too - Catwoman is the marquee villain so get a biggish name in there but not someone who'll overshadow the whole thing. Hathaway isn't hugely ubiquitous and she's got pretty damn good range so I'm not too worried about it. Now who is this other female character gonna be? And are we getting a new mob boss perhaps?
-
If done right, Bane will be a very good addition. With the darkness of Nolan's movies Bane will be the complete badass he was meant to be. Since Batman cannot beat Bane hand to hand, this is the best chance to show Batman's real skills. Batman's a thinker and this should give Nolan a great chance to show that. Catwoman on the other hand, I'm not too sure about. If it's the same old love/hate thing then I'm not going to like it at all. I guess they had to give him a love interest, so it might as well be Catwoman. The problem is that the character is just not interesting to me at all. I have no idea why she's so popular except for the fact that woman like her. She's not a villan who's capable of killing anyone, and she's basically just a thief in a cool suit.
-
I bet 50 bucks in my friends' Batman Casting Pool that Hardy was playing Tweedledee with a red wig and they were going to cast Carrot Top to be Tweedledum. I didn't see this coming! Shit!
-
Or maybe she just never refers to herself as "Catwoman" in the movie, so they call her Selina Kyle in the press release. That said, I don't think she is one of the "villains" of the movie at all. I think with Rachel out of the way, that makes room for another love interest, one who can take care of herself so Batman doesn't need to constantly worry about her. Rachel might have been a good fit for Bruce Wayne, but Catwoman makes more sense for Batman.
-
I wasn't that excited about this particular Batman installment until this announcement. Tom Hardy and Anne Hathaway! Good choices.

Why bring in Selina Kyle if she's not going to be Catwoman?
by THE_CHOPPAH
This is it for Nolan. Last one. You people screaming that the release says nothing about Catwoman are literal-minded morons.
-
and he was supposed to be South American, not British! Love Tom Hardy in practically everything he's done so hope he can pull of the character without doing a cheesy accent. Don't want that dumb version they did in B&R that's for sure, Bane should be just as good as Batman in almost every department, not just some hulking brute without a working braincell! Anne Hathaway is spot on for a damn fine Catwoman, thank god no Blondes. Anne has devlish eyes and smile to match that booty in leather!

I knew Hardy would be in it, but Bane? Wow. Interesting.
by Mr Nicholas
-
That's all I ask.
-
brilliant! whoda thunk?
-
Anne Hathaway?!?!
-
I'm not doubting Nolan at all. Nor am I conceeding that this movie is going to be screwed, but whenever I think of Bane I think of -- Gulp. BATMAN and ROBIN.. I can't help it. I mean Bane in the comic books didn't impress me either. I thought that Tom Hardy was going to play that Dr. Whats his name..-- I forgot- but thats exactly the reason why I thought it would have been a good idea to cast him as that character. Maybe that Dr. Will be in the Dark Knight, and Bane will once again be a third tier villain in this piece. I'm expecting it to be a crime Drama once again. Worst case scenario is this movie is being influenced by the upcoming Justice League of America Movie just as the Iron Man and other Marvel movies are being effected by the upcoming Avengers movie. I think that would have been a big mistake by Warner Bros/DC. They should learn from the mistakes of Marvel Movies and let these movies be individual pieces unto themselves. Christipher Nolan is a great writer/director. Him and his brother are a great team. I think he's going to find a way to knock this out of the park, but I dont think Bane should be the main bad guy in this movie. Too many great villains in the Batman universe to waste Nolans amazing mind on "Bane"..
-
Nolan can strip the character down to their basic real world interpretation and keep them cool and true to their roots. Don't expect anything we've seen before. Scarecrow is the key to what Bane will be like.
-
How would Batman ever have a legit love interest? He wouldn't have the time! After Wayne Enterprises stuff, Batman stuff, & the daily commute, when in the hell can he find the time for a date?
-
That's what's awesome about Catwoman. She just wants to fuck Batman.
-
Both previous Bat-man films have had 2 bad guys each not even including mafia boss types. So It's not so different. I think Hugo Strange was a bad choice anyway, Nolan wants to go out with a bang not a whimper . No one out side comic fans has heard of Hug strange. He doesnt look interesting , and the dark version on Bat-man would no doubt draw comparrisons with Dark version of Spider-man ( venom) inthe 3rd Spider-man film. Bane is alse a psysical villian , of which we havent really seen that much of in regards to Nolan verse
-
Remember? I think it was Vengeance of Bane II if I am correct (its been a long time). But Bane had impressed Ra's so much that he named Bane his heir. I could completely see this as the direction for the story. Which I think would be really cool! It involved ignoring Bane's back story and changing parts of Knightfall - but that story could never be told in one movie. Bring on Ra's al Ghul's heir... BANE!!
-
Anne Hathaway as Catwoman makes me happy. Easily my favorite female comic book characters. Not sure wtf they're gonna do with Bane, but I'm looking forward to finding out.
-
Would make this the greatest movie of all time. Knightfall nerds UNITE!

In Batman:Legacy story arc, There is a Bane/Ra's al Ghul connection. Read...
by chadiwack
In Rome Bane encounters the League of Assassins and eventually Bane impresses Ra's al Ghul so much that he chooses Bane as his heir (an "honor" he had previously imparted on Batman).
-
i loved his fight with AzBats in issue 500 or whatever it was. never understood the hate for Bane. i guess fanboys wish it had been The Joker who broke the bat. at any rate, Nolan's first 2 Batman movies were awesome and there is no reason to believe this one won't be as well.
-
In almost every trilogy the 3rd is the worst one. Star Wars (Jedi), Godfather (3), Spider-Man (3), X-Men (3), Blade (3), Back To The Future (3), Matrix (3), El Mariachi (Once Upon A time in Mexico), Rush Hour (3), TMNT (3) Need I go on?? . . .
-
I'd love to see her do something that's not so 'goody two shoes' ..if she can pull this off, it would be great for her career..and my penis
-
Considering Nolan's past output (Worst. Joker. Ever), I'll pass on another snoozer Could be funny to watch just to see how much of a soulless expositionfest it'll be...
-
I'm a little worried, since Bane always seemed so cartoon-y even in the comics. But, I have faith in Nolan. In the TDK, burn-victim Two-Face didn't even show up until the last third of the film, but we still saw evidence of his character in the first two-thirds (the temper-tantrum alley scene). I actually think Catwoman will be harder to pull off than Bane. Bane's motivation will be pretty easy, the mob or League of Shadows hires another man to kill the Batman (although this time they go within their own ranks/connections). Catwoman...what's her motivation? the Falcone angle? Is she really Talia or part of the LOS? Does Talia even exist in this universe? The problem will arise if Nolan does any "secret identify" stuff, because what motivation will Bane or Catwoman have to wearing a mask or having a secret identity? Little to none. In TDK, Joker who had no secret identity, because he was the Joker and only the Joker (the great prison scene, "all he has in his pockets are knives and lint"). And Two-Face never had a secret identity, even after his transformation. He just went on a f'n rampage.
-
Nolan sure seems to like dark haired girls!<p> Carrie Ann Moss...<p> Katie Holmes...<p> Maggie Gyllenhall...<p> Ellen Page...<p> Marion Cotillard...<p> and now Ann Hathway.<p> Nolan's been compared to Hitchcock for his movies, but where Hitch famously cast blond's Nolan seems to have gone the polar opposite.
-
We're missing an Azrael. Whos it gonna be?
-
Am I the only one who can't stand giraffe neck?
-
definitely easy to picture Hardy as Bane. Not sure how I feel about Hathaway. But Catwoman has been heavily rumored ever since TDK, and shouldn't be a surprise to any talkbackers, those who at least don't have the attention span of an oyster. I think Nolan's Catwoman will do justice to Burton's horrible take on the character.
-
talia? Like others said above, the press release does not mention CATWOMAN.
-
There are exceptions...The Good, The Bad & The Ugly; The Bourne Ultimatum; Toy Story 3; LOTR: Return of the King... And there are several ongoing franchises in which the third film is superior to the first two: Harry Potter and the POA; Goldfinger; Lone Wolf and Cub 3...
-
Yes, even Nolan can do wrong.
-
And while I agree that such a turning point in Bats' history was "poorly drawn" (as autodidact mentions) . . . it's something that happened. For cripes! Should BE the last scene of this film; the ultimate cliffhanger and all. Instead, gonna be mishandled, mishandled, mishandled. Would we REALLY be p'd off if we met an incapacitated Bats early on or in the middle of the film and, say, an Azrael goes out to do major damage 'gainst Gotham's villains? Will not happen, and THAT's why we'll be p'd. Maybe they'll let this Bane inflate and deflate itself too. Should call this installment "The Dark Knight tool." So, SO not done w/Joker. Yes, YES Depp as the Joker, others, c'mon, man.
-
Yeah, Heath Ledger's a terrible choice for The Joker. Hang on a minute...
-
BB had Ra's Al Ghul, Scarecrow and Mr. Zsasz. In TDK we had The Joker, Two-Face and the Scarecrow again! Nolan is a fine craftsman for handling characters though, he won't five anyone more screentime than they need to deliver in contribution to the overall story. He didn't make a meal out of the Zsaz and Scarecrow cameos in either film which is why most people barely remeber they were in it but he's managed to use these guys to bolster the Bat-universe without making it campy like the previous directors. If he does a Knightfall themed movie, then he'll have even more villains on show and he's the right man to handle that just perfectly!
-
I looked through potential enemies and wow what a lot of silly nonsense....Calendar Man, Actuary, Cluemaster. Not much to choose from if you don't reuse the big baddies. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Batman_Family_enemies
-
Break Batman's Back? And have Selina boink him back to life? :D
-
She'll have a charismatic, confident, defiant front that hides a broken-hearted little girl and self-identity issues. Her humanity will be brought out of her and she and Wayne will both learn something about themselves, behind their respective masks. As will we all. This kind of stuff almost writes itself, no? I'm predicting the Batman version of 'Rachel Getting Married'.
-
And what terrible casting for Selina. Massive loss of interest.
-
You guys do know Selina Kyle is Catwoman, right?
-
It's because you know two things about Bane: Jack and Shit.
-
Bane should be approached as we was initially in the comics. A ex-soldier/mercenary who comes to town to take Batman down. He's a great military strategist. Since Batman is now a fugitive, I see Bane coming to the powers that be in Gotham and offering his services to bring Batman to justice.<p> As for the Venom drug, I would have the backstory being that Bane was introduced to experimental techniques in the military. He suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress and starts to rage out if he doesn't take his medication. Basically a reverse of the existing Venom situation. If Batman can get him to rage out and become unfocuse, he'll be able to defeat him.<p> Catwoman is an obvious choice for Nolan's "grounded" Bat-verse. I just don't see Hathaway as playing someone seductive, which is what Catwoman needs to be. She's too much of a nice girl. Or at least she has been in what I've seen her. Of course, she's an actress, so hopefully she'll surprise me.<p> As for Bane releasing villains to wear Batman down, it was already done in Batman Begins. I don't see them revisting that plot element so soon.
-
Did team up together at one point.
-
This movie is gonna rattle the cages!
-
In Nolan We Trust. Until he goes wrong, which he really hasn't...that is my motto
-
Great casting. 2 very good actors and Nolan / Goyer's take on Bane and Selina Kyle will be very interesting I'm sure
-
Maybe Talia will be cast, too, then. There had been reports that Nolan was looking at actresses for TWO female roles.
-
FUCK IT
-
the title of the film is "the dark knight rises" it makes a great deal more sense for something like bane to break batman's back halfway through the film and then for the dark knight to rise in the third act, redeem himself with gotham, defeat bane and get the girl.
-
Bane is one of the most badass and intelligent villians ever. I'm excited.
-

Mattman has a valid point. They name Selena as Selena - not Catwoman
by impossibledreamers
So, perhaps we are introduced to her in this one with the possibility of her becoming Catwoman later. Only caveat to that - they could have done the same with Harvey Dent. Him becoming Two-Face to me could have waited.
-
Easily my favorite Tim Burton movie.
-
You are deleting balebackers posts???
-
Both of these choices are promising. Does saying so mean I'm not a fanboy, and if so, does it mean I can stop wearing these Underoos? They're very binding.
-
IT'S FUCKING DISTRACTING!!!!!! OH HI ADMIN, DELETE GUY.
-
As someone mentioned, it doesn't specifically mention that she's playing catwoman only the hack that wrote this story is claiming this. It makes more sense that she plays Talia al Ghul. But what do I know?
-
Is a fucking fantastic choice. Anyone who thinks otherwise doesn't know the character as well as they think. This isn't Batman and Robin ("Exit!"). And seriously, this is getting a bit out of control on here. I get annoyed by the constant bitching of this community about films they haven't seen yet, but I can sort of (only sort of) get it when it comes to directors, franchises and characters we have yet to experience on the silver screen... but Nolan has a well established track record with Batman. Can no one on this site give the benefit of the doubt?!
-
Right back to crap Batman movies with crap villains. Shit I'd rather see Clayface and the Ventriloquist.
-
Not Talia. Look up Selina Kyle on wikipedia. Christ, did everyone lose their nerd license overnight? You know Bruce Wayne is Batman, right?
-
Batman: "Talk. Start with your name." Bane: "I am Bane... the last opponent you will ever face." Batman: "Nice mask." Bane: "Defeat me, and I will allow you to remove it." Batman: "I don't fight for sport." Bane: "Then fight for YOUR LIFE!" This dialogue = Best thing that ever came out that of stupid "The Batman" cartoon.
-
Shes just kinda gangly and pale with freckles. Not to mention shes a spaz who gets way too excited about shit. Check her out at Obama speeches. The only thing that makes her ok for this role is she can use her real life craziness to enhance the role. But If she goes too far and is all hammy that'll really suck.
-
Isn't he a little small to play Bane? I guess they'll change up the character or something. I just don't see Tom being able to get "Arnold" huge. So they must be taking a new spin on the character. I trust Nolan and I'm a fan of Hardy, so I'm sure it will turn out great.
-
Hathaway is wildly overrated and awful - not sexy, too Liza-Minelli-ish (big horrible features) and just wrong. Hardy is sort of her British male counterpart. Bleh. I'll be skipping this outing.

Not really eager to see yet another Catwoman but Hathaway has the body for the suit and by the standards of this series can act well, should be interesting.

Very excited about anything Batsy, but ya'll gotta read this Seth Rogan quote about Lucas.
by AzulTool
I'm sure that many of you have read this already. Funnyman Seth Rogen was left stunned by a recent encounter with his moviemaking hero George Lucas - because the Star Wars director spent 20 minutes telling him the world would end in 2012. Rogen was left speechless when Lucas and Steven Spielberg joined a movie meeting he was a part of - but the encounter has left him worried his life will be over next year. He recalls, “George Lucas sits down and seriously proceeds to talk for around 25 minutes about how he thinks the world is gonna end in the year 2012, like, for real. He thinks it. “He’s going on about the tectonic plates and all the time Spielberg is, like, rolling his eyes, like, ’My nerdy friend won’t shut up, I’m sorry...’ “I first thought he (Lucas) was joking... and then I totally realized he was serious and then I started thinking, ’If you’re George Lucas and you actually think the world is gonna end in a year, there’s no way you haven’t built a spaceship for yourself... So I asked him... ’Can I have a seat on it?’ “He claimed he didn’t have a spaceship, but there’s no doubt there’s a Millennium Falcon in a garage somewhere with a pilot just waiting to go... It’s gonna be him and Steven Spielberg and I’ll be blown up like the rest of us.”

Wouldn't that be something, if this was to introduce a NEW Batman?
by JDanielP
You never know where this series might lead...and what Nolan has up his sleeve (so-to-speak). So many possibilities, inspired by comic book history OR NOT. We know that Bale is on his way out, so...what if Batman DOES have his back broken? Will this lead into a new actor/character becoming Batman? And do you know what I love the most about all this??? --I have no idea of what to expect!!! --Bring it, Nolan!!!
-
This is the second casting choice of an actor who was famous for their cute teenager movies but who earned their acting chops in Brokeback Mountain. Replacing Tom Cruise's stepford wife with Jake's sister Maggie?
-
Pure box office gold my friends! Pure box office gold!
-
Bane uses Selina to seduce Bruce Wayne whom they both know is Batman. Selina could manipulate Wayne and Bane could terrorize Batman.
-
A cold, calculating, crime lord hooked on an experimental steroid? Grew up in a prison serving his dad's life sentence. It will be mad cool, you'll see.
-
Either Hathaway or Hardy should die before the movie is released, and you'll get a sure hit that has potential to beat the Avatar record.
-
I'd rather see that Third Rock kid as Riddler - and that's a stretch. I was hoping for an Al Capone-type turn from Bob Hoskins as Penguin, but...oh, well. I just can't get Shumacher's Bane out of my head - yuck.
-
I really like the casting so far and if Nolan continues to perform as he has on the last two Batman films this looks like it will be pretty good. Dark Knight was a film with very dark themes so I hope they do lighten up the mood of the film just a wee bit.
-
Let's all tell him the world is really ending and he needs to hide in a bunker. That way he won't make any more crappy Star Wars prequel or sequel films annnnd stop re-editing the originals every few years. WHO'S WITH ME!?!
-
What the fuck is with fanboys and always wanting direct serialization from their sequels? Ras Al Ghul in Begins was a one note throwaway character, any continuation of that would be a huge mistake.
-
I totally forgot about that. Kyle may run around mugging horribly for a while, but soon she'll put the rubber mask on and we'll be spared the sight of Hathaway's stupid face. And Bane wears a lucha mask! So that's OK. Maybe I'll wait for the Blu-ray and FF through their parts.
-
For months, taking over Gotham, while loose allies (Catwoman?) try to fight the good fight. Then Bruce "rises", kicks Bane's ass and in the end realizes he needs allies, opening the door for the Batfamily, that we'll thankfully never actually see on screen. I'm sure Noland and co will come up with something better, but Bane handled well is an awesome, awesome character.
-
Never would have guessed Bane as a villain in a Nolan Bats flick. What's most shocking, though, is that no one was able to scoop this! That would have been epic...instead of getting beat to the punch by a goddamn WB press release.
-
While searching for the Swiss man in Rome, Bane encounters the League of Assassins and eventually Bane impresses Ra's al Ghul so much that he chooses Bane as his heir (an "honor" he had previously imparted on Batman). That could be a very cool connection to the first film.

I don't know...Anne Hathaway? I wanted an edgier chick to play Selina.
by AzulTool
-
Pardon me for saying so, but her ta-tas aren't big enough to play Catwoman.
-
I second your preference for Emily Blunt as Catwoman.
-
Yeah I'm thinking there's going to be a connection. Great way to bring the trilogy full circle.
-
Love the potential here. I can see Selina Kyle/Catwoman taking the role of Azrael from the Knightfall story arc and becoming Batman's loose cannon of a successor. Anyone doubting Hathaway's strength or potential to be bad-ass should check her out in Rachel Getting Married or in her final scenes of Brokeback. I think we can expect a Catwoman that is both tough and a bit mentally unstable in her pursuit to be Batman's equal. (Assuming that Selina Kyle dons the Cat mask that is...)
-
Since Nolan went right out of the gate with Ra's Al Ghul, it stands to reason that Bane will represent Bruce's replacement in terms of "returning the natural order" to Gotham City. I only say this because, in the comics, Ra's chose Bane in the "Bane of the Demon" and "Contagion" storylines... Curious how they will fit Selina in there...
-
you'll bitch about the casting decisions -- the same way you bitched about ledger being cast as the joker -- until the trailer comes out and you're sucking this movie's balls.
-
The Ventriloquist. Mark my words. ''Gring me Gatman!!''
-
I hope he doesn't break his back and he ends up in a wheel chair that would be shit. Batman needs redemption, not to mention getting laid!
-
That thinks Catwoman is a shitty character?
-
Hell, most talkbackers get more pussy than Batman has. That's sad.
-
i really HATE the 2 villains formula. the fact that it's STALE is only half the problem. it also bears asking WHY you would cast someone with the acting chops of a Heath Ledger or a Tom Hardy if you plan to dilute their performances with a secondary villain. it's like stealing their thunder. ridiculous. all you Nolan jockers need to recognize.
-
They could go either way on that, or take the middle ground, where she has been most comfortable in the comics. Selina is just as complex, if not moreso, than Wayne. That's why she's a great character.
-
Are going to fill out that cat woman costume so nicely...I can't wait!!!!!!!!
-
First Kate Holmes, then gyllenhal, and now this?
-
I don't think having Aaron Eckhart in TDK diluted Heath Ledgers performance at all, i thought it brought the acting up a notch. Look at the casts assembled in both films so far, strong isn't the word and excluding Katie Holmes none of them have put in a poor performance. I personally think the better quality cast you have , the better the performances you will get
-
Honestly since Nolan is re-interpretting these characters, Bane/Hush/Dr. Strange/The Riddler (to a lesser extent, Black Mask) are all essentially are the same character: a rival to Batman/Wayne who can figure out his identity. He can basically intrepret him to what he wants and needs for the plot. (Like how all comic characters have changeable backstories to suit a particular book.) Although with Bane, you have some potential Scarecrow and LOS connection. I'm not worried, because the character "Bane" is essentially a placeholder name for the character of "Batman's rival that can kill him." Nolan will interpret him into something useful for the plot.
-
Is he still alive?? we were never really given an answer. And for that matter what about Ra's?? He should technically still be alive too.

darthwaz1, Aaron Eckhart explained in an interview once that he personally asked Chris Nolan himself if Two Face is in the movie, Chris said no. Like Two Face is done for good.
-
But Tom Hardy is nails. Good casting.
-
If you all think about it, Bane is a perfect choice. Bane was the only villain to ever break the Bat and destroy him. Maybe at the end of "Dark Knight: Rises" Bane actually kills Batman which how the trilogy ends???
-

Sounds good and finally someone to go toe to toe with Bruce physically
by shutupfanboy
I am hoping Anne's outfit is a little bit more sleek then Michelle's in Batman Returns. Bane is also pretty damn smart as well. Strange just seemed boring and we have had enough of the psychological shit in the past two movies. Lets see Batman kick ass.
-
as the main Bat villain instead of Bane. He would fit much better in the Nolanverse than Mr. Steroid user. I still can't believe that horseface Hathaway is going to portray Catwoman. FUCK!
-
I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO REASON TO DOUBT YOU THUS FAR, BUT YOU AREN'T MEETING MY OWN MADE-UP SCRIPT AND CAST FOR YOUR FILM SO I'M TURNING ON YOU!
-
Selina Kyle is an alias for Talia (al Ghul) Head
-
Because when Hathaway smiles she looks like Venom.
-
I'm in. Balls deep, even. I'm more glad at this point that there's only 2 villains instead of clustering it up with people just for the sake of sating the studios and whatnot.
-
I just noticed the press release only says Anne Hathaway will be playing Selina Kyle, it doesn't say anything about Catwoman, while it explicitly says Tom Hardy will play Bane. Wonder if Selina Kyle will be in the movie but never as Catwoman?
-
http://unrealitymag.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/anne-hathaway-havoc-splash.jpg Suck it.
-
Seriously...Hathaway? WTF?!!! And Bane isn't even vaguely interesting. Oh well, Spider Man 3 -- all over again.
-
So, this means the movie will still be great, but could be epic. But it won't cause he always cast's the wrong females. Just like the last 2 Batman movies he made. Anne has too much teeth and doweyes! She looks like a fucking clown, she could've been a semi-lame harley quinn.
-
I have never been a fan of Bane in the comics. Hope that Nolan changes it up. Same with Catwoman. While I was never a fan of Hugo Strange, the possibilities for that story sounded so incredible, I was really hoping they'd go in that direction and get rid of love interests, a marketing ploy that is absolutely unnecessary and abused by the Hollywood system to cheapen stories. Dark Knight surprised me with their use of this industry standard, especially for such a mainstream product, and I hope it is just as necessary to the story in this film. At the same time I am excited about the casting for Bane. Tom Hardy has a great screen presence and I am definitely looking forward to what he does with the character. Nolan's Batman films have not disappointed me so far and I hope the finished product for this film is just as enjoyable. Best of luck to Nolan and his team.
-
So... my least favorite villain is going to in the last batman movie by my favorite director? Mixed feeling, but oh how I trust Nolan, and oh how I fucking love Tom Hardy with a firey passion. Calling it right now: Bane's a cop and his venom is a daily (then hourly then three in his heart at the end) injection rather than the silly tubes. This is the first villain that's a physical threat to batman, and I can get down with that, especially now that we know Nolan can knock out some great fight choreography. Anyways, I'm getting more and more intrigued and less disappointed. Just got to remember that Nolan's smarter than me. Also Hathaway as Kyle? Fucking bring it. Sure I wish it was Mila Kunis or someone more.. catty? But Anne is another of my biggest crushes and she's talented as fuck. You'll see. Best love interest casting yet. The best news here, really, is that THEY ARE STAYING THE FUCK AWAY FROM TALIA AL GHUL! That's fantastic news.
-
Nooooooooo!
-
I was rooting for it to be Bane all along. Hardy is gonna kill it too. I guess if the only knowledge of Bane that I had was from Batman and Robin, then yeah, I'd be pissed too. I think this is gonna be cool. I'm not big on Catwoman...but I'm glad we have someone who can act in the role even if it's not my favorite character.
-
not disappointing, more like exciting and intriguing***
-
Seems like a perfect choice. Not sure on Hathaway but...
-
Was great in The Dark Knight. I was so disappointed to see her go, I don't understand all of the hate for her.
-
Fuck me this is going to be so great. Wasn't this trilogy supposed to end on a positive note though? Bane breaking Batman's back and nearly killing him doesn't make for a very cheerful ending.
-
I'll be spanking it in a theater near you....
-
I was really hoping for Calendar Man.
-
I love how everyone immediately speculated Catwoman will be in the movie. Did you just read the press release carefully? She's casted as Selina Kyle, Catwoman's name wasn't mentioned at all. Doesn't mean Selina will be in the Catwoman costume in the next film.
-
She did fine, but I think alot of us think it could be someone so much better.
-
Is that Batman has faced numerous villians smarter and stronger than himself, so Bane was nothing special. The only villian worthy of truly hurting Batman is the Joker. <p> There's really no way I wouldn't go see this movie since the other two were pretty great. And I'm sure Nolan will bring a certain level of believability to Bane. Still though, TDK should have been were the series ended. Batman hunted and coming to terms with Joker forever terrorizing the city just to make a point, but unwilling to finish him. Now anything else just feels like something tacked on. We saw how he becomes Batman and faces his greatest enemy. And now we get to see him fight...Bane. Oh. And maybe Catwoman is in there, stealing stuff? <p> It's a hard sell to get really excited for this. The one thing they might have as an ace in the hole is some footage of Ledger they can piece together.
-
Then watch GET SMART. I'd buy that for a dollar!
-
They Casted Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent and we all saw how that turned out. There not going to do Selina for the last film and not have her be Catwomen at some point.
-
Or could be badly injured in the beginning by Bane after he gets caught off guard. As he heals he may go after a simple cat burglar and finds her useful for reconnaissance on his new enemy. Both are unrealistic enemies if taken at face value from the comics. However, i have confidence that Nolan can put a semi-faithful spin on them and still have them come out as awesome. Anne Hathaway as catwoman does kinda seem like it could be a problem though; Noemi Rapace would've been perfect. Nolan isn't as great of a filmmaker as people make him out to be. He has a lot of unique problems with his movies; his editing is so quick at times it actually detracts from the pacing. But he's damn fine at creating convincing and interesting, if not totally believable characters.
-
Judging by your post i guess you did not know that this is the last film in the nolanverse. He is ending it. He has said many times that it will have a ending for batman and he is done with the series after that.
-
But I am very nervous at this stage. I must admit I am disappointed with the character choices that have been made but Nolan hasn't let me down yet (well maybe a little with Prestige). Fingers crossed this is either bullshit or Nolan pulls the rabbit out of the hat for his finale.
-
This news came at just the right time. I may have testicular cancer, and I feel like crap. This news makes me a little bit happier.
-
...comes from a talkback on the Batman forums at SuperHeroHype.com. In reference to a bunch of fanboys already calling Anne Hathaway "ugly" and a "butterface," a poster retorted with this bit of brilliance: “One of the most hilarious/sad/pathetic things on the Internet is geeks nitpicking female beauty. You'd think they kick supermodels out of their beds.” ROFL!

Again, all you idiots citing that Catwoman isn't explicitly named:
by THE_CHOPPAH
If there's not going to be a Catwoman appearance, why bother making Selina Kyle your lead female character? Nolan says he isn't making another Batman movie, so why would he set up a character with no payoff within this movie? Literal-minded fucktards ... My bet is that she's "revealed" as Catwoman later in the movie, or becomes Catwoman, and WB is trying not to "spoil" it, even though anyone with a modicum of knowledge of Batman will know who the fuck Selina Kyle is.

That's what they should call it. Am I right?

Selena being used as a catalyst for Batman losing his purpose... Rachel was set up by Nolan in the first two movies as Batman's conscious, and now that she's dead and Batman has become hated by everyone in Gotham there's definitely the opportunity for Batman to be vulnerable. Along comes Selina Kyle to push him over the edge. Batman tends to flirt with the darkness in his own soul more then most super heroes, which was always one of the purposes of Catwoman. She appeals to him on a very primal level, and one of the best things that came out of Batman Begins I think is we see Bruce Wayne's struggle with his own darkness. What's more it fits in well with the theme of both movies, that there's a thin line between being a hero and being a villain as both Ra's al Ghul and Two Face are emblematic of (both in a twisted way consider what they are doing as a form of justice). Tom Hardy's a great choice, Bane should be interesting and hopefully Nolan will wash out the horrible taste of how he was portrayed in Batman and Robin. And I've long since forgiven Tom Hardy for Star Trek Nemesis... it wasn't his fault the movie sucked and killed TNG, and he was fantastic in Bronson and my personal highlight of Inception. I'm not a huge Hathaway fan, in fact I generally try to avoid movies she's in... But hopefully she'll be able to pull this off.

Selina kyleand/or Bane will be bounty hunter on the hunt for Batman
by MajorTierce79
10$ says they will be bounty hunters (maybe more Catwoman) on the hunt to catch batman since he's a wanted man now...and Bruce and Selina will hit it off not knowing who each other are (Kinda like Batman returns)
-
Nolan knows what he's doing and you don't. Coming from a Batman fan of 46 years, this is awesome news to me.
-
thank you for not disappointing with your outrage about Anne Hathaway. Sincerely, men who have actually kissed women.
-
I believe Batman will die in the film. The people of Gotham will take a stand for what he stood for. Hence the title "The Dark Knight Rises". I still have hopes for Talia being in the movie and being linked to Bane. I'm hoping it's Eva Green. Selina may never become Catwoman in the film.
-
Just wanted to say that.

Meanwhile, Peter Sarsgaard will be playing Gallagher in Green Lantern.
by THE_CHOPPAH
-
I agree that we must give Nolan and Co. the benefit of the doubt; given the past two films. That said, I still think it's not only bad casting--Hathaway--but also bad villain choices. Horrible. I love Hardy, but him playing Bane does nothing for me. Bane sucks. The possibility of Nolan's 3rd DK installment being a Suck-Fest is real, people. We must brace ourselves...
-
Sargaard steal GL's ring and use it to form a giant green Sledge-o-matic.
-
Remember that Raimi had pretty much lost all control of where SM3 was going. He never wanted Venom to begin with. In a case like this, Nolan has complete control of what he wants to do in the Batman universe. I have complete faith in what he does. If you'd have described Batman Begins to me before the film came out, I'd have been cynical and rather disinterested, but look what Nolan did with it. And then TDK. Can't wait to see Hathaway in a catsuit too.
-
Not that it wouldn't be interesting. I just don't see Warner Bros. allowing it to happen. I don't see Batman getting his back broken either unless one of two things happen. 1) it happens early on in the film and he recovers from it or 2) it happens at the end of the film and Nolan decides to come back for another run.
-
Just as long as he squashes the Earth like a watermelon. The movie can be in 4-D, and we'll all have to bring plastic sheets for protection.
-
then you find out the alternative villains fanboys wanted like Penguin, Riddler, and Black Mask. Ha! Now Bane and Catwoman don't sound so bad. Do they?
-
The one villain nobody wanted to see :/.
-
...would have made a great Catwoman...

Penguin and Riddler? Nah. I wanted Bookworm and Egghead.

Maybe King Tut.

-
You'd have to be a fool not to realize that. Alot more potential than The Riddler, The Penguin or whatever loser you guys really wanted for this movie.
-
they probably didn't name-check Catwoman just to screw with the fanboys. Either way, i'd much rather have her introduced without an origin story Joker-style, so she can get right into the mix. As opposed to Harvey Dent, where we got Two-Face for like a couple minutes of film. The story should be the dynamic between Batman and Catwoman and how that plays into the story. How she became Catwoman should not BE the story. Takes too much screen time.

When Eckert was cast didn't they say he was cast as Harvey Dent, not Two Face. Remember who Harvey Dent became 3/4 through the last Batman movie? So saying that Hathaway is cast as Selena Kyle is basically saying she's cast as Catwoman, or at least the Nolan version of Catwoman.
-
...would also have made an interesting, and boner-approved, choice for Catwoman...
-
but appearantly that ship has sailed.
-
only know him from the back breaking in Knightfall... which was admittedly a bit cheesy... but they did great things with his character as the comics went on. he broke out of prison and went after the drug lords who manufactured the drugs he was addicted to. good story too. he refused to use the drugs anymore and tried to prove himself superior without them. batman just gets in his way.
-
Just kidding. This sounds awesome. I will totally watch Bronson v Batman v Catwoman.
-
I'm aware that sitting here in my pj's fapping to the wonder that is the internets i may not be in a spot to talk...but still...she just doesn't do it for me.
-
they don't want people's mind to wander to the Halle Berry disaster. They use the name "Selina Kyle" and "excited to work with Anne Hathaway". It's a triple checked press release to give all the information at once in the most positive way possible. Read it out loud with a radio voice and you'll see what I mean. It suppose to sound upbeat and exciting because it's released in massive amounts to the press who will report it by quoting it. PR people!
-
Shouldn't someone have slapped together a hastily photoshopped picture of Hathaway into a Catwoman suit and mask by now? Let the fapping begin! (then immediately get denied with the claim that she's ugly).
-
that any consideration the Producers of the Spider-Man reboot movie to include Black Cat will be dropped. There were rumors floating around for a long time that in the new movie Spider-Man would cross paths with the Black Cat, but with the confirmation of Cat Woman in DK Rises, they will not likely want to compete as both movies are coming out the same year. Besides Cat Woman is a far better and more established character than Black Cat, and more generally accepted. As far as Anne Hathaway goes, I really can't see her in the role, but, Nolan has never given us a reason to doubt him. We might be pleasantly surprised.
-
Hathaway isn't as hot as Olivia Wilde, but she's a much more talented actress (so far anyway). Even her strange performance in Alice in Wonderland was impressive (one of the few good things in that film). She will look awesome in a catsuit though, mark my words.

The comic book Catwoman never died and came back to life because some felines breathed into her nostrils as the celluloid Catwoman did. Catwoman is essentially a female Batman, just not as noble. That said, I find it interesting that it's mentioned that Hathaway is playing Selina Kyle, no mention of her alter ego. I'd imagine that we are likely to seee a different take on Bane than we've seen in any medium. Wonder if Bane is taking Hugo Strange's place in an adaptation of the 'Prey' storyline that has beeen posted recently?
-
...calling The Dark Knight "over-rated" and saying I'd ask you this: What, in your eyes, IS a great comic movie? I'm extremely curious....
-
She was good in The Devil Wears Prada because she played herself. I know I'm in the minority on that. Bane??? If someone can pull it off, Tom Hardy can. This film is getting very interesting.
-
The studio made him do it. He didn't have the same power or influence then.
-
Never thought of that for some reason.
-
He's really no different than Arnold, or Vince McMahon.
-
Batman Returns. Dark Knight is more of a great crime film, with very little "comic book" in it.
-
BULLSHIT!
-
Check her out in Rachel Getting Married, she can do crazy without much effort. To me, the definitive Cat woman is the Jim Lee 'Hush' Cat Woman and she matches that perfectly. Say what you will about her physical attributes but you can't deny that she's got a great pair of beautiful eyes that should look amazing looking out those big cat goggles. I trust Nolan in that he tends to make good casting decisions. I'm sure screen tests with Hathaway and Bale showed that they had the right chemistry with each other.

I just can't see it. But, I trust Nolan thoroughly at this point, so I'll give her the benefit of the doubt. She was very enjoyable as The White Queen in Alice in Wonderland... she may surprise me.
-
Two more characters for Nolan to take their names and bastardize anyway he wants to. Bane? Who cares. One note nothing of a character. Catwoman? Jebus! Here comes the hooker with a heart of gold version. At least Talia and Hugo Strange would've been something "else."

-
Ah, maybe a truly great comic movie has not yet been made. But among comic movies, TDK and Superman are closest to approaching greatness. On a side note, I'm still waiting for America to stop correlating comic books with superheroes.
-
Gotta keep telling myself that. He hasn't let me down yet. But Anne Hathaway as Catwoman? That sounds as bad as Katie Holmes as Rachel Dawes. I was hoping, if Nolan did Catwoman, he would cast Juliette Binoche, but oh, well. We'll see. I'd feel better if this wasn't part 3; but part 3 in live-action movie trilogies almost always suck. Oh, well; fingers crossed. In Nolan we trust. In Nolan we trust. In Nolan we trust.

People who use the word "realism" to describe Nolan's Batman movies don't even know what it means.
by Timstuff
Nolan's Batman movies are not realism. If they were realism, then they wouldn't even be about Batman. Nolan's approach is called NATURALISM. It means you take a subject matter that does not necessarily exist in real life but you approach it and film it the same way you would something that is real, even if it's not real. Including Catwoman in this movie does not undermine Nolan's "realisim" because his movies aren't realism in the first place!
-
wow lotsa griping all over the net about anne (also Brokeback Mountain) hatheway. My reasonable Casting grades for the Nolan BATfilms based on look and performance: Batman/ Christian Bale = A Alfred/ Michael Caine = A Gordon/ Gary Oldman = A+ LuciusFox/ Morgan Freeman = A+ RasAlGhul/ LiamNeeson = A Falcone/ Tom Wilkinson = A- Scarecrow/ Cillian Murphy = A- Rachel Dawes/ Holmes = C+ Rachel Dawes/ Gylenhaal = B+ Joker/ Heath Ledger = A+++ HarveyDent/Aaron Eckhart = A SalMaroni/ Eric Roberts = A- Gambol/ Michael Jai White = extra credit Bane/ Tom Hardy = ? SelinaKyle/ Anne Hatheway = ? With the exception of Katie Holmes, who was adequate at best, these were all arguably fantastic casting decisions, with some (Ledger,Neeson,Wilkinson,Roberts) not the obvious choices. Anyone whoes seen BRONSON knows what Hardy is capable of as BANE (both characters are hulking psychopaths.) Makes sense now why he was cast so early- to bulk up bigtime. Great actor and excellent choice. As for Hatheway lets reserve judgement till we see the film. If Nolan's track record is any indication he just may pull an awards-worthy performance out of her ass.
-
Who cares. His Batman films were visually dynamic, unlike Nolan's. I think Burton catches the spirit of a comic book much better than Nolan has. Nolan has taken Batman to a different place, and where that place is I'd say is more in line with the crime genre than the comic book genre.
-
we basically had the same training as batman and he grew up in a spanish prison. (where he was highly schooled as well.) there are plently of cool ways to go with Bane.

I like it too. It's beautifully gothic and I appreciate it. But as a lifelong Batman nut, I have to go with Nolan's versions. He gets the characters. And the crime genre style fits nicely with Batman. I love Burton's movies (especially the first one), but for me they are like Elseworlds tales.
-
Hey, it was going to work when Hathaway was cast as Felicia Hardy.
-
thank you. I couldn't agree more.

A little too much like the Joker. It would have just been some guy trying to outwit Batman in every scene instead of a bad guy like Bane who can not only outwit Batman, but take him on in a fight too.

Should Have Got Rosario Dawson and Done Year One Catwoman
by Autodidact
Since so much of Batman Begins resembles Year One I thought they might go with the bi-racial punk catwoman from Batman:Year One. In my mind that's been Rosario Dawson since seeing Sin City. In that series there is no Catwoman, just a very capable Selina Kyle who wants Bruce's dick but also is a thief/vigilante.
-
A young Sela Ward as Catwoman is a fantastic & inspired choice. She's still hot, but in her younger years she was a flawless beauty. That said, I think Hathaway will do quite well also.
-
I trust Nolan, but seriously, how often do you beat off thinking about Anne Hatheway? Catwoman should be someone you pull the goalie for on a semi regular basis. Be honest gents, listen to your cocks. They won't lie. Come to think of it how often to do you beat off thinking about Hilary Swank, Katie Holmes, Maggie Gyllenhaal, or Ellen Page? Nolan's got some weird taste in chicks. Tom Hardy on the other hand...
-
????
-
and is also incredibly beautiful...not sure what else people are looking for...
-
even though the press release says selina kyle that's not to say she won't be catwoman, but why try to read between the lines and say that she is going to be catwoman? They announced before the release of the dark knight that two-face would be in it so i think im gonna do the smart thing and not judge this movie till it's released and i see it with my own eyes... no excitement based off a press release, no hyping this film up as the next coming, just gonna have some patience
-
Let's not have a repeat of 2007 and that nonesense. Nolan cast Anne Hathaway for a certain role and he cast Tom Hardy for a certain role. They're not the roles that everyone on the internet has decided they should be, so we're all going to bitch and moan and second guess and decide he was wrong and start throwing around words like "Fail" and "Meh" and other oh so hip turns of phrase as we count down till July of next year. We did the same thing in 2007 when Nolan cast Heath Ledger as Joker. Dear God did people bitch and moan about that. That turned out okay in the end, so before we tear apart Anne Hathaway, lets take a minute and remember Heath. And before you say "Anne is no Heath" just remember that Heath wasn't Heath until The Dark Knight. I think after The Dark Knight and Inception, Nolan has earned a break from the fanboy bitching. The man hasn't failed us yet, I doubt he's gonna start now. Just chill.
-
These villians are purrrrrfect.. (Get it?) No, but seriously folks... I can see the plot now. Take the storyline from Vengeance of Bane comic, raised in a prison, smart as fuck, can beat the shit out of anyone, and is addicted to an experimental Venom that makes him stronger. (Basically Bizarro Batman) Catwoman is a thief who is robbing from the rich ala Robin Hood. Batman knows what Catwoman is doing is wrong but she's helping people. Enter Bane when Gotham hires someone to capture Batman. He makes more trouble and destruction than necessary. Bane finds out who Batman is and so does Catwoman. Catwoman needs to redeem herself for the crimes she committed, helps out Batman, beats Bane, and Gotham forgives Batman because they realize what a great hero he is. The Dark Knight Rises....end credits. You're welcome.

I think Burton's films work much better as comic book films due to their imaginative integration of fantasy elements which I think most people would associate with the comic genre, and Nolan's films work much better as crime films due to their more down and dirty nature and very little emphasis on fantasy elements. To put it in Bond film terms: Burton made the Batman equivalant of Goldfinger, whereas Nolan made Casino Royale. Which would mean Schumacher made Moonraker.

And Bane's background story is pretty fucking interesting and not completely implausible: Spoiler: Bane was born in the fictional Caribbean Republic of Santa Prisca, in a prison called Peña Duro ("Hard Rock"). His father had been a revolutionary and had escaped Santa Prisca's court system. The corrupt government however decreed that his young son would serve out the man's life sentence, and thus Bane's childhood and early adult life are spent in the amoral penitentiary environment. Though imprisoned, his natural abilities allow him to develop extraordinary skills within the prison's walls. He reads as many books as he can get his hands on, builds up his body in the prison's gym, and learns to fight in the merciless school of prison life. Despite his circumstances, he finds teachers of various sorts during his incarceration, ranging from hardened convicts to an elderly Jesuit priest, under whose tutelage he apparently receives a classical education. Bane murders this priest upon his return to Santa Prisca years later. However, he commits his first murder at the age of eight, stabbing a criminal who wanted to use him to gain information about the prison. During his years in prison, Bane carries a teddy bear he calls Osito (Spanish for "little bear"), whom he considers his only friend. It is revealed that Osito has a hole in his back to hold a knife that Bane uses against anyone who bullies him. Bane ultimately establishes himself as the "king" of Peña Duro prison. The prison's controllers take note and eventually force him to become a test subject for a mysterious drug known as Venom, which had killed all other subjects. It nearly kills him at first, but he survives and finds the drug vastly increases his physical strength, although he needs to take it every 12 hours (via a system of tubes pumped directly into his brain) or he would suffer debilitating side-effects. --- I hope Nolan uses at least in part the initial Bane-storyline, which includes Spoiler: Bane outsmarting/stretching Batman to his breaking point by releasing ALL the really dangerous psychos from Arkham Asylum, causing a slew of carnage (and causing Bruce to become overly tired and sloppy, thus inadvertently revealing to Bane his secret identity). Then of course there's this memorable moment: Spoiler: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/8a/Bane_breaks_Batman.png

Sorry, I just don't see Anne Hathaway as a bad-ass Catwoman. She strikes me more as more the campy 60's TV versions of the character. Hope Nolan and Hathaway prove me wrong.
-
Really. Tom Hardy as Bane is a great choice, and Bane was no joke in the comics. Hathaway is fine, and we'll still have Hugo Strange concocting the venom serum. Jesus, Nolan's earn some good faith, no?
-
Seriously, who can forget Dylan Baker's tour de force performance as co-lead in Spider-Man 1, 2 and 3?
-
Then you shall poop well!

90 minutes of origin and thirty minutes of catwoman. Which is the best way to do it if you want to effectively have someone become a villain.

Seriously wtf? Can't the man cast a hottie for a change?
-
both accolades from THE CHOPPAH and a rich, clean, satisfying shit.
-
Chris Nolan hasn't directed a bad movie yet, so until he does, I'll keep the faith. Anne Hathaway is hot, btw and a very good actress.

Nolan won't disappoint.
-
I'd bet you'd want to cast Malin Akerman or Carla Gugino as Selina. I'm right, aren't I?
-
It seems they are going to film some scenes around March. He visited an old city hall building in Bucharest and a salt mine in Transilvania.
-
I have seen all of Nolans' films and I have loved all of them! He is becoming one of and could become the greatest director of all time! He has not failed me yet and from the sound of it has not failed most everyone at all! So I like his choices for the film. Remember we all wondered how Ledger would do as the Iconic Joker and it is now forever gone down as one of the greatest movie villains in the history of cinema! I look forward to this amazing movie to be.
-
Not by a long chalk. Indeed, by certain metrics she's quite beautiful. But she is not sexy. She's a woman's woman. Kind of like Audrey Hepburn.

Marry Hathaway, Fuck Holmes, and kill Maggie G.

"Beautiful to the point of deformity." That's what she is. And that's sexy. Remember--as Catwoman she'll have everything on her face covered but those huge eyes and luscious lips. And Audrey Hepburn is a woman's woman? Jesus Criminy. What planet are YOU from? Hepburn was THE piece of ass in the mid-Twentieth Century for my money...

We all said said WTF when he cast Ledger as The Joker. We all had a bad feeling and were sure that he would fuck it up. I actually shed tears when I saw The Dark Knight because Heath's performance was a Joker for the ages, and we would never get to see him as that character again. I trust Nolan implicitly.
-
seriously, I don't get the appeal of this woman. Why can't we get a Catwoman who is hot like Julie Newmar was back in the day? As for Tom Hardy playing Bane, I'd have preferred the Hugo Strange character instead. But Nowlan will probably make it interesting.
-
Hey, Nolan hasn't come this far with two superb gritty superhero films to fuck up. I'm sure if the fanboys and media don't hype the film up to ridiculous standards, then we will all be in for a delightful treat and hopefully some closure to this trilogy of cinematic perfection. Ironically, I just started re-reading the complete Knightfall saga which (as you all know) involves Bane and the eventual deterioration of Bruce's well being for the sake of keeping Gotham safe as crime escalated and all hell broke loose. If anything, I'm more interested in seeing if Marvel shuffles the release date for The Avengers to avoid going head to head with this film. Anne Hathaway is a talented actress and you can't go wrong with her in a leather catsuit, as for Tom Hardy playing Bane, we can't really judge any of it until more details on his character are released, but I wouldn't be surprised if Nolan has a surprise trick up his sleeve and Bane isn't the featured villain. With approximately 18 months until this film is released and they haven't even started principal photography, it's a surefire bet that we won't get an inkling on the main baddie until the teaser trailer at Comic-con this summer. That's all I have to say...oh yeah, peep my blog at http://kungfutreachery.blogspot.com !!! Kid tested, motherfucker approved!!!
-
Anne should be on her knees thanking god spiderman 4 was cancelled. And as long as she's on her knees.......
-
Don't sell yourself short. You're an asshole. Just kidding. (no I'm not)
-
Hathaway has her moments, but I could honestly give or take. Tom Hardy though: one of the most under-recognized actors today! I'm almost upset that he's going to be in such a high profile role, because it'll become like Gary Oldman; still great, but at some point his success hindered his ability to disappear into a role.
-
If the implication of Bane carrying out his motif from Knightfall on The Bat, logic dictates that this is where the gymnast Barbara Gordon would come into play. Barbara would be about 13-14 by the time Gordon is made Commissioner. So Bane breaks The Bat and rules over the city whilst Wayne is in traction getting healed by Cassandra. Then one night weeks after the attack he sees a shadow of a cape at his window and the sound of a brash teen girl saying ironically the exact words he said to Gordon in the office during their first meeting : "NOW WE ARE TWO"!... Then we see Batgirl start her epic journey attempting to take down Banes organisation whilst Wayne heals himself at the end of the movie.
-
They are apparently casting a love interest AND a female villian. The press release only says Selina Kyle, which leads me to think we might still get Talia. It depends if Selina is the villian, or the love interest. Afterall, they could have Selina is a cat burglar, but NOT a supervillian, just an actual female burglar, who batman is trying to catch, but then begins to flirt with, and he decides not to turn her in, she could even end up a sidekick before the movie is over. I'm not saying that would nessesarily be good, but just a way the movie could go. I trust Nolan, but I'm not a big fan of Hathaway. But I also couldn't of imagined Ledger as Joker before seeing how well it worked, so I have faith. To me the title is so far the most lame thing about this project. Too many titles have 'rises' in them, and it just seems weak compared to how good a title The Dark Knight was. I'm still holding out hope of Eva Green as Talia al Ghul. I'm also in the crowd that got interested in Hugo Strange from the Arkham City trailer. I'd only ever seen the early 1990s cartoon version of him where he was a short loser, so this new version seemed Nolan approiate and a good fit for Hardy, and the idea of Batman being hunted on all fronts. I guess one advantage with Bane over Strange is they don't have to justify a comicbooky name. Like the odds that a guy named Strange, would end up being so... well strange. I could see Hardy as a smart, brutal assassin or mercinary, who's last name happens to be Bane, or just goes by that as an alias
-
Tricky verbiage. Maybe they are both one and same. :)

Batman: Arkham City is coming out this fall. It should at least keep most nerds quiet until next july lmao!! http://kungfutreachery.blogspot.com

What the hell? This sounds (like it could be) badass. Anne Hathaway (who some of you don't know her acting range that well) should get themselves to see Rachel Getting Married to see how well she could act. Hell, she was in Brokeback Mountain (where another Batman actor acted, and where many of you had doubts about him -- where are those doubts now?) Catwoman can be a badass. I have read enough of the comics, seen enough of Batman: TAS and Batman Returns to know she can be nasty, strike an E. Rekshin when needed, and knows how to fight. Knowing that Hathaway is a legit actress give sme confidence she will surprise us all the way Heath did. Tom Hardy for Batman. All I say to you is - go on Youtube RIGHT NOW. Now type in "Bronson Trailer". Watch the trailer in its 2:30 entirety. Enough said about him being Bane. AND Bane... Why the hate? I read one of you was looking forward to Hugo Strange? Look, for the most part Strange is like The Penguin, Falcone, and Rupert Thorne. A great villain who doesn't really have to lift a finger. Look, these are great long-term villains, but for a shoot-em-up action flick with a lot of money, I would go for the guy with the muscles. And this isnt Croc who is a dumbass. In the comics, Bane FIGURED OUT WHO BATMAN WAS BECAUSE HE WAS A G (for Genius). Smart and ripped? This is the end of a trilogy you guys... He isn't breaking Batman's back. Please show some intelligence and forethought before commenting. Thank you.

I hated what Bane was reduced to in the previous Batman movie. To see his character given the respect it deserves, portraying his high level of intelligence and physical prowess in a realistic fashion, and given his history as villain and ally of Batman (and Ras al Ghul) - this is one character that I can't wait to see what they do with.
-
Look at roles like Warrior and Bronson, the guy is committed into whatever role he plays and seriously will make Bane come to life.
-
Same level of talent. Jesus, I can't stand Anne Hathaway. At the very least can Nolan CGI her fucked up Disney character eyes down to normal size?
-
But I guess Anne Hathaway works too. I'm sure she'll look smokin' in the outfit.
-
this type of casting makes no sense. The Batman fans may love their beautiful women, but Anne Hathaway? Really? She will be too much of a detraction from the movie and the rest of the cast. The only other casting I despised was Katie Holmes. Remember the outcry because she was cast? Hathaway is in the same boat as Holmes. She may not kill the movie, but she won't fit in.
-
Not even Christopher Nolan. I loathe Anne Hathaway. I am not a fan. Any bum can think of a million other choices to play Selina Kyle. Does anyone seriously see Anne Hathaway as a hooker? That's where my Year One mind goes, even when I was watching Batman Returns. Michele Pfiefer, even though the character as portrayed wasn't a hooker - totally could have been. It comes down to perception. Catwoman, above all else, needs to be sexy. The more slutty sexy she is the better, because that speaks volumes to what Batman is comfortable with in a relationship. Anne Hathaway is not sexy. She just isn't. Maybe in a nun I'd like to fuck sort of way, but Catwoman is no nun. However, I am totally intrigued by Tom Hardy as Bane. I really liked Bane in the Legacy storyline, and I love Finch's allusion to the Venom drug (via Killer Croc) in Batman: The Dark Knight comic. Nolan is no idiot, obviously. Also, I have not heard squat about this production. I still have faith, despite the casting of Hathaway, whom had an indirect hand in totally fucking Raimi's Spidey 4, but I am oh so totally biased on that point, true believers. If anything sinks Nolan's Batman legacy, it will be the casting of the deplorable Anne Hathaway - she has no business being in a Batman movie, let alone being cast as Selina Kyle. Hell, give me Amy Adams over Anne Hathaway any fuckin' day!
-
What a load of shit. Probably no Talia either. Fucking wank Nolan.
-
Not Selina...
-
I admit, I'm a bit ambivalent about the actual character selections, but they do make sense, in a way. Besides the rumors that have floated about for weeks now saying this exact same thing: 1. Nolan always insisted that this would END his story, and beyond that, he stated that his Batman would not be like the comic book and just "keep going," which, to me, implies that HIS Batman will be out of commission by the end - not dead, I don't think, and probably not gone for good, but as in Knightfall, unable to BE Batman for a while. 2. Someone HAD to replace Rachel Dawes, a character whose function really kind of failed her even in TDK. I mean, given they were always following YEAR ONE and LONG HALLOWEEN, in TDK, she just became a replacement for Gilda Dent, albeit without the whole Holiday Killer Persona meant to save her husband, which Dent WOULD have been had she lived (she says so in the letter and he proposes 40 minutes in). She also couldn't have survived long, anyway, because she would always be Bruce's single biggest incentive to give up the cape and cowl. Catwoman, then, really becomes the only logical replacement, as it allows him KEEP being Batman while still having the love interest - at least, until the end of TDKR. That being the case... 3. Anne Hathaway is a really good choice for the Selina Kyle of THE LONG HALLOWEEN. Someone mentions her connection to the Falcone family, either in Talkbacks or the article - that's valid, of course, although I don't remember her being BLOOD kin. But Hathaway makes sense as, perhaps, a slightly less athletic, but no less cunning jewel thief whose goal has become sort of parallel to Batman's, such that she could concievably take his place at the end of the film, battling the remaining mob by STEALING from them! 4. Last, but not least, while I still have a sort of bad taste in my head about Hardy, I'll admit, I've only ever seen him in the last of the Star Trek TNG movies as the Picard-clone villain Shinzon. That said, I trust Nolan, particularly his casting instincts, and since Bane of the comics and the animated series was something of a mercenary for hire (not unlike one of Spidey's villains!), it makes sense that, with Batman on the run for Dent's crimes, someone... someone HIGH UP... would hire Bane because the logic would be that only someone of Bane's caliber could stand any chance of actually catching Batman, the "criminal," and doing him in for good.
-
I was hoping the villains would be Hardy would be playing Hugo Strange and the someone playing Talia ah Ghul. Throw in Vicki Vale for the love interest. Was I not the only one thinking that's where The Dark Night Rises was headed? I am not happy about this news.
-
hopefully this will elevate him above the 'largely unknown outside of industry circles' status he has now. Either way... Bronson... wow.. just watched that. That movie sucked. His performance was fine enough, just the movie was a real tosser. I will say this, though. If he tries to Bronson-ize Bane, wow.. this is a real trainwreck headed our way.
-
Bane? i mean, i guess some bloke in a roid rage for a while but bane as the main bad guy? that's gotta not be right....it's gotta be PREY! we need hugo strange!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! unless they're using bane in place of the bad cop in the Prey comic book story line, Sgt. Max Cort? which would be a great substitution.
-
all the original press releases about the shortlist of actresses being looked at specified they were casting for 2 characters.
-
I can't see Hathaway playing Catwoman, but I'll wait to see it. But, Lame? I mean, Bane? A mexican fighter? Oh, come on...
-
Selina Kyle just an alias, like Duchard was for Ras. She could also be in the league of shadows, and so would have the same training as Batman, making Catwoman a badass ninja babe

Selina Kyle is not a name you merge with another character
by MattmanReturns
She's too big for that. Duchard was easy because the general public had no idea who that was. Do it with Selina, and you'll fuck with too many people's heads. "Wait... where's Catwoman?".
-
amen.
-
...well, one of the creators anyway. Is Graham related to Christopher Nolan too? There are no details on IMDb. Wikipedia shows Bane was created in 1993 by Chuck Dixon, Doug Moench and Graham Nolan. No big deal but I find it interesting another Nolan Begins
-
You fucking whiny PMS having fanboys are insane. Has Nolan made a bad movie? You all bitched when Joker was cast, and now you whores cant get on your knees fast enough to praise that as the best interpretation. That said I wanna feel Anne Hathaway from the inside.
-
There's some hardcore misogyny goin' on around here.
-
Almost as lazy as Patrick Stewart as Prof X. I like it though. Tom Hardy is great to watch. I wonder how big he's going to get for this role.
-
If you've been paying attention to the news on this, Nolan has full control over script, characters, and casting. If it sucks, we'll only have him to blame.
-
Anne Hathaway is sexy as hell, and Bane is a great character(in the comics) who REALLY didnt get his due in Schmuckmachers film. Read some Secret Six by Simone or ANYTHING by Denny O'Neil featuring Bane...awesome,awesome character.
-
Anne Hathaway can just drop dead. <p>This is already lackluster. We'll be wishing this was never made, like Highlander 2.

Come on, Catwomen again. I never bought that villain, the character bombed in her own movie, and its been done twice now. Have to say I am disappointed in Nolan, but then again I also was when I heard Heath was gonna be the Joker. No way I thought he could pull that off and I was dead wrong about that I guess
-
A lot of people don't realize Selina Kyle is a schizophrenic. Good catch, thatswhatshesaid.
-
Hollywood really needs to stop raping poor Catwoman...the campy 60's t.v. version to Halle Berry's to Anne FREAKING Hathaway!?...They need to bury the whole Catwoman character, until they can get it right.
-
I couldn't agree more...
-
Are you Catwoman insisters the same ones who said the Lizard had to be in every Spider-Man because his alter ego was there? Sure its supposed to be a trilogy but I'd rather see Selena Kyle as a female lead than make up a lame female sidekick like Batman forever or B&R
-
I'm talking big, meaty donkey dick here!
-
Do you mean Batgirl?
-
sorry, premature enter...
-
Cat Woman is OK with me as long as there is no supernatural element to the character. I think the character would would work if she was not quite a villain and just a talented cat burglar. <P> Bane I am less sure about, although Nolan has surprised many times in the past. Case in point: I was really leery about his casting of Ledger in TDK, but that worked out quite well. I am just not sure the Bane character... is there enough there to make it interesting? <P> Also, I have the feeling that they could have used the Penguin, even if they do not use his alias and called him Oswald Kobblepot. Or even the Riddler, but make him a kind of Zodiac/Cryptographer criminal. <P> Anyway, that's my 2 cents.
-
This movie is already retarded...I fear Nolan has lost his touch to the taint of Hollywood...
-
after consideration - yeah Batgirl is included in that description. and Robin too.
-
I think Anne is pretty, but she's a far cry from "Hot"..almost a little plain & bland actually...I'm very bummed about this casting choice..
-
Yeah, I figured that's what you meant, since Catwoman wasn't in either of the two Batman movies you mentioned.
-
when he was first cast people hated it, Hardy will be a great Bane. Nolan won't Bane a cheesy villain like in B&R. As for Anne shes ok, not my 1st choice but she does have a sexy-ass body!
-
What role did billy dee williams play in burton's batman? According to many of you , he played two face. And you'd be fucking wrong . You have no idea what the DKR plot is and you hate it already, you want different villains and different actors to play them. If this is your case, you suffer some sort of mental illness. Get help. Nolan's track record speaks for itself. Dont give me the "I don't like what Nolan has done with Batman so far...blah blah" excuse . Dont fucking post then. Naomi Watts as Catwoman.... jesus . Naomi can do sit on a bullprick.

Did Olivia Wilde, Jessica Biel, Kate Beckinsale, Mila Kunis, Marion Cotillard, Rebecca Hall, Natalie Portman, Moon Bloodgood, and Yvonne Strahovski all have the flu the day of casting?
-
Nolan's earned my trust with the first two films so I'm prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt. Not sure about the casting of Anne Hathaway, it maybe out of her usual rom-com comfort zone, but I'm sure Chris knows what he's doing. I'm not the least bit worried about Tom Hardy. He could convincingly play a fucking 90 year old great-granny if that's what the script called for.
-
Damn. Was hoping for pretty much anyone else for the role. Noomi Rapace, Emily Blunt, Rachel Weisz, for starters. Apparently, Nolan has a thing for the more animated, cartoonish features of women like Katie Holmes and Anne Hathaway. Anne, in my opinion, is simply too awkward and "girly", if you will, to pull off Catwoman. She's cute,..even pretty I suppose, but not sexy in the way Catwoman needs to be. I see this as a big disappointment and a lost opportunity. I trust Nolan and I hope to be proven wrong. But,.....just damn. As far as Bane goes,...eh,...whatever.
-
Hell yes. Me likey.
-
It is not a safe choice that is stirring up the nerd fan base. Reminds me when Ledger was cast as Joker. I think Anne will be great in the role. Hardy, man that casting it just amazing... If Nolan gets to shoot this in IMAX entirely, we are looking at one hell of a film. I can't wait until July 2012!

Not the final art mind you, but test pieces for the film. You blew it, Harry - you could have broke this story before anyone else but as usual, AICN is running late to the party.

Wow!!...Wonderfully put..I would've loved to have seen all or any of those casting choices more so than Anne Hathaway

Just as Ledger did. She's probably aching for an edgier role at this point.

It's early April Fool's Day!

Hardy as a 90 year old great-granny, I love it. Whiners need to shut up, seriously. Everyone bitched about Ledger, and now, even if Nolan has to drag you kicking and screaming, in the end you will thank him.

I'm surprised they're trying to tackle Catwoman in the Nolanverse. Bane is doable but he was never a very complex character. I really liked the thought of someone like Hugo Strange taking on Batman but whatever I'm sure Nolan wouldn't do it unless he had a cool idea for the characters. If I have learned anything from Nolan's taste it is that Catwoman will not have cat ears as part of her outfit.
-
it's about time someone posted a picture like that. I requested, nay, DEMANDED something like this at 3:18:38 CST. Thanks for not disappointing.

Bane looked okay in the comics and Knightfall arc was quite a blast to read in the mid nineties. Not too sure whether the character translates well into screen (never mind the B&R fiasco turd) but the combo with Catwoman makes this last part of the trilogy seem a fizzler instead of going out with a bang..... Was interested in the Hugo Strange storyline ... could it be Nolan was pissed that it was leaked and he changed the villains?? Anyhow, hoping this is a good GRITTY film like the TDK was and not a wimpish Bane.....
-
so she can win an oscar.

Very happy with Hardy but just imagine Anton Chigurh with a luchador mask vs Batman!
-
well it's not my favorite pairing for villains but I'm sure Nolan knows what he's doing

As chuffsteruk said, the villain choices are crap.</p><<p> Nolan, Nolan and Goyer should have gone out on a high note with Harley Quinn introducing the first act as a woman scorned, and then follow that with the return of Ra's Al-Ghul and the revelation that Bruce Wayne had a son with Al-Ghul's daughter, Talia, in an off-screen romance.</p><p>Talia, Damian Wayne as Grant Morrison's Robin and Al-Ghul's League of <s>Terrorists</s> Assassins would have made a good 2nd and 3rd act.</p><p>Catwoman may not make for a good spectacle, especially with Hathaway as Selina Kyle.
-
Man, I love it how people bash this when the movie haven't even came out yet. Tom Hardy is perfect for Bane because Tom is built and massive like a rock, just what the Bane character needs.Wait until the trailer comes out, and then you can fucking judge. Bane is the most dangerous Batman villain, so we'll get a really good action movie.
-
He's related to Batman's last love interest and will have fucked two of his enemies. There is just something wrong about him not starring in this franchise somewhere.
-
She looks very feline like here: http: //unrealitymag.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/anne-hathaway-havoc-splash.jpg And there's no question she's getting hotter and naughtier with age.
-
Now that we finally have the Batman villains, Warner Bros. and Chris Nolan will tell us the "Superman" villains too, which shall be interesting.
-
As much as I love what Nolan has done to reinvigorate the franchise, Hathaway is just plain wrong. Yeah everyone had doubts about Ledger but with all the makeup the main requirement was acting ability since you could make most actors look like the Joker. You cant hide Hathaway behind a mask or make up for the entire movie. It wont work. In a world where Angelina Jolie, Kate Beckinsale, and even Rhona Mitra were floated we get Hathaway. It will stick out as badly as Katie Holmes did in Batman Begins.
-
What is Nolan thinking? I reallt can't see this being good right now and I was really enjoying this new incarnation of Batman. I was hoping Catwoman would not be in it. My only hope now is you have the character Selina but not her Catwoman alter ego. You can't take that character seriously on the big screen.
-
Out of all the potential choices and rumours Hathaway was who I least wanted. I could have beared anyone else. The only thing that makes sense about this choice is that she looks like a cartoon. Man she is hard to watch on screen. I really hope they don't use Catwoman and just keep her as Selina. That's my only hope now.
-
I'm not for this or against it, it just makes me curious to see what Nolan's take on these characters is going to be. And would it be sacrilegious for a Batman film to introduce a major villain that is completely new and original instead of adapting existing ones to fit? With two villains per film couldn't one be a new guy (or gal)? I wonder if such a thing is ever even considered.
-
The character of Bane doesn't seem like a formidable enough of a villain. I am admittedly ignorant to the character and I like the actor and what they have done with this series so far so I am expecting it to be good. It's the Hathaway/Catwoman news which has really kicked me in the balls. Very disappointing.

Right casting choices? Yes. Right characters? Not sure.
by PureAgression
This is the rare occasion that I like the casting choices better than the characters they'll play (is that even possible)? I think Anne Hathaway would make a great Selena Kyle/Catwoman. I think Tom Hardy would make a great Bane. I'm just not sure if Catwoman and Bane are appropriate characters for Chris Nolan's Batman universe. Admittedly, this stems from what was seen in "Batman Returns" and "Batman and Robin" - it's difficult to get those out of my head. Now, I'm not asking for something better than "The Dark Knight" -- to ask the Nolans to do so would be asking for way too much. But if they can give me something that's consistent in tone and grit with the tone of the first two films that finishes off the story -- while raising the stakes even higher -- then I think I'll be happy.
-
The storyline will pick up with Bane having stepped in to fill the void left where Batman left off as he is officially a wanted fugitive of the law. Naturally he's exacting justice in a way that is over the line and conflicts with Batman's ideals. Bane winds up hurting someone close to Bruce Wayne/Batman. This is what will likely motivate BW to pursue Bane directly. Ultimately this showdown is what will vindicate Batman. As the first 2 films opened with a 'bang', Bane will be the centerpiece for the opening sequence. He'll be involved trying to shut down a crime in action. The action will be shot fast and not until the end scene of the opening will we know it's Bane (and not Batman) in action, ala TDK & the Joker removing his mask at the end of the bank robbery. This would be a great way to show how Bane fits into Gotham and will display a bit about his motivation for being there. Instead of explaining how he got there he just will be. Can't wait to see it all play out on screen!
-
Hey there! Long time fan of comics and lover of the Nolan films here. I just wanted to point out that Bane is actually, in origin, a great idea for the movie. He's the anti-Wayne, imprisoned for sins of the father, but like Bruce, trained and well educated, in an opposite way. He becomes a drug addict in Venom, a turbo-steroid. Also, Catwoman is a very grounded character if played as a decadent Cat Burglar-Thief minus any super heroics. Trust me, I think he can make this work. Is he going to do Knightfall? Break the Bat's back?
-
Knowing Bane's origins, it seems more to me as if he will have Gotham Mafia ties. Likely to fill the role that Deadshot was mentioned to have, broken out of prison internationally by the mob to kill Batman. Your idea would be great for the Reaper, but I doubt we'll see Bane as any type of "hero".
-
....that the much maligned Dark Knight Rises title was selected as a foreshadowing of Batman rising again after Bane breaks his back???? ......WHY PINTO????
-
Anything Nolan does turns out being fantastic, so I have no reason to believe otherwise on this. I have no idea how he's going to pull off Bane in his realsitic universe, but it'll happen.
-
I'm really enjoying the irony of Nolan's biggest fans simultaneously trashing him for his choice of characters. According to these fanboys (aka nerds) he's a genius and a moron all at once! LOL They've lavished praise on Nolan's 'realistic' vision while complaining about Bane being selected over Penguin, Riddler etc...wtf? All along wanting the third act to play out with characters whom would never fit into this universe...unreal. Did people seriously think that Hugo Strange, Deadshot, etc...were ever going to make it into this movie? Not to mention trying to refute the character with Schumacher's B&R version...please! Go back to the drawing board with that objection as it doesn't wash 13 years after that movie was released! It's long overdue that Batman had someone capable of challenging his physical capabilities. Like him or not, Bane is an iconic character and has recognition. Fans were going to line up no matter what...but even those who don't like the choice can't wait to see if Nolan will 'break' that Batman or not. Whether you like Nolan's take on Batman or not he'll make it work for his story. He gave Scarecrow a mask, Two Face a deformed face & the Joker a purple suit and 'war paint' so I'm certain he'll have Bane wearing a mask at some point in the film. I'm more excited than ever to see how the film comes out and the conflicting arguments along the way! : )
-
But cobra-kai has that covered. I'll take a brunette over a blonde any day!
-
Dude, Bane is not iconic, sorry. Walk up to any random person on the street, ask them who Bane is, and they will give you a blank stare.
-
You people still don't trust Christopher Nolan? Reading this thread makes me very happy that this is the interweb. I probably won't have to meet you.
-
Heck, she has even done tons of nudity now. I just don't think she has the graceful athleticism that Catwoman displays. I've mentioned before that I've seen Hathaway in person and she's super pale and super skinny with really exaggerated facial features. And the reaction to her casting is nothing like it was for Ledger. When he was announced, it was a WTH? reaction since it was just so out of left-field and unexpected. Anne Hathaway is a pretty standard mainstream choice, imo, and doesn't really even make you curious about the movie.
-
Why not Rebecca Hall or Emily Blunt?

And look at how that turned out? Saying an actress/actor is unfit for a role based entirely on their previous acting jobs is kind of silly, at least in the case of a younger one. It wouldn't be the first time someone stepped out of their comfort zone and hit a homerun, and in my opinion that generally draws out a much more unique performance then if someone "obvious" had played Catwoman (or the Joker before her). I also don't get why people are pissed about Bane. I mean you all do realize Nolan's interpretation we'll probably be radically different from the typical portrayals of Bane we've seen, right? Just look at how different Ra's and Scarecrow were from their comic adaptations. Whatever though. Nerdrage is as nerdrage does.
-
Remember, he was sure that Hardy was Hugo Strange? I guess Strange still could be in it, just not Hardy. Also, the one part Hathaway did that makes me accept this was Get Smart. I thought she seemed physical enough, and not so goofy. Pretty easy next to Steve Carrell though.
-
She hasn't done A N Y T H I N G.
-
It sounds like Bane won't be a straight comic to movie adaptation. Nolan said they have a new interpretation.
-
They both technically never died!!
-
Christopher Nolan understands Batman better than any other director so trust him. Bane is shocking but that is what I love about Nolan you never know where he is going. Examples: Prestige, Memento, and Inception. I have been a Batman fan for over 40 years I even named my daughter after Catwoman her name is Selina and she is a big Batman and Catwoman fan. Last month when I heard they might put Catwoman in the next Batman movie I was thrilled, and when they showed the list of actresses that might be cast, Anne Hathaway was the only choice in my opinion. I was thrilled about the casting news today. So Trust in Nolan.
-
Talkback for the Ledger announcement looks a lot like this one, a mix of "trust in Nolan" and "THIS WILL SUUUUUUUCCCK!". Talkbackers never change.
-
Never been done in a movie. Or even a good version of Mr. Freeze.

She looks good naked in that last movie. Nice curves. If that's an illusion, whatever. It worked.

The outrage over casting Ledger is different than the outrage over casting Bane...
by ArtisticGrief
...in that when Ledger was cast, people were upset because they felt he wasn't the right person to play a character they REALLY wanted to see on screen. With Bane, people aren't upset about Tom Hardy being cast. They're upset about Tom Hardy being cast for a role that they find completely uninteresting. They're not interested in seeing the character, regardless of how good the actor playing him might be. So comparing the whining over this casting news (at least for Bane) with the whining over Ledger's casting isn't exactly a fair analogy. Personally, Bane's not who I would've picked, but the more I think about it the more I think the Nolan brothers could do something awesome with the character.
-
Am I the only one who thinks you could bring up the old talkbacks of when Heath Ledger was first announced as the Joker and all the Brokeback Mountain hate that ensued and see a parallel with the A. Hathaway hate now? Maybe its me but Nolan seems to have a pretty good track record with Brokeback Mountain actors he has cast in the Batman movies...
-
Read up on the guy.
-
she looks certainly looks the part.
-
Oh hell yes. If he plays Bane as conceived in the comics: Evil Doc Savage -- born in prison, raised by psychopaths, it could be Batman Vs. Bronson. FECK YES.
-
Did Anne Hathaway rape you or something? You seem to be taking this pretty personally.
-
I don't know if this has been mentioned but the press release says nothing about Catwoman. It says Ann Hathaway has been cast as "Selina Kyle." If she was Catwoman, it would say Catwoman, no? And yes, she was revealed to be Carmine Falcone's daughter in Long Halloween/Dark Victory. Nolan has been playing with that Year One continuity and in Year One Kyle was first introduced as a prostitute. I've never wanted to see Catwoman in this series, but I'm intrigued. I really wanna see what Nolan and company have in store.
-
as in "rises from wheelchair" after having a snapped spine. Ohmigod. Is this actually a Harry Knowles biopic?
-
And the press releases/official synopsis' for Dark Knight never said the name "Two Face" either, just Harvey Dent. Selina Kyle is in the movie for a reason.
-
You're confusing this with Stargate Universe.
-
One the best episodes was the introduction of Bane. He was probably the most Intelligent of all the villian save for maybe Ras'. hpefully Nolan can pull some ideas from that.
-
that Nolan does a Blade Runner-inspired showdown in a decrepit building. Batman = Deckard, Bane = Batty. "Like tears... in... rain..."
-
No less than General Zod et al were before Superman 2 successful release? Right? Beyond what's been done already in the movies i.e. Riddler, Penguin, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, Ras, Scarecrow the other names i.e. Deadshot, Black Mask etc...have even less public awareness than Bane. Nolan only wanted to go back for one character (catwoman) and forward for another for something fresh to further separate his trilogy from any past work. Any attempt to hybridize or develop a 'new' character as some have suggested would turn out as bas as Nuclear Man from Superman 4...lol Aren't fan boys always raving about 'staying true to the comics'? Well that's what you are getting from a director that has already delivered. Your getting what you and others hollored for since the B&R fiasco.
-
It will certainly be interesting to see how Nolan twists this story...Bane's origin, motivation and physical prowess into the film. I'm not seeing him as a 'hero' but rather Nolan will be 're-inventing' the character by playing off the mixed relationship Bane & Batman have had STRAIGHT OUT OF THE COMICS. As Spawn, Venom & Bane have evolved in the comics into 'anti-hero' status I can see how his relationship could really twist in the film. I really think Bane will be portrayed as more of an opportunist in the sense that coming to Gotham is his chance to rule the city...which includes knocking off mob bosses, rather than working for them. Sure he could be a merc but considering the Bats on the run why would he get 'hired' by the mob? That didn't work out in TDK according to "plan" the way they wanted now did it? : ) I really want to see him hold Batman up and yell out "This city is mine!" than giving him a good toss. Time will tell!
-
Remember when she was trying to court Burton to be catwoman and all that wacky shit? She has a similar look.. attractive but scary and not in a good way. Almost feels like shes vindicated by this casting.
-
He is nothing like they portrayed him in B&R he is actually extremely intelligent, in fact he was able to figure out Batman's identity in under a year and after he did that Bane defeated hum in a fight and ended up breaking Batman's back
-
Imagine him as a brilliant tactician and bodybuilder of sorts that basically spends all of his time analyzing Batman's fighting style and training himself to counter it a la most boxers and UFC fighters these days. That could be cool, though Hardy as Deadshot will be my "if only" casting forever now.
-
Seeing as how she's pregnant.
-
What is the fascination with Bane? He is about as exciting and as important a rogues gallery villain as Zassz. Tom Hardy is wasted on a 10th tier villain as this. Penguin, Riddler, Dr. Hugo Strange, Mad Hatter...any would be better than frikking Bane again. Insane to think that in the Hollywood Batman films that Bane is featured as in as many films as Joker and Catwoman...that's just nuts. Bane just doesn't rate. He is not in the same league as the Joker, Catwoman, Penguin and Riddler...or even Two-Face and Ras Al Ghul. Blame for this is layer squarely on frikking Joel Schumacher's shoulder for ever elevating that wannabee douche of a villain to the big screen. Nolan wouldn't have considered Bane in the pantheon of Batman's rogues for his final film if Schumacher hadn't made it okay. Knowing this is Nolan and Bales final outing with Batman makes this creative choice seem extremely wasteful of opportunity. Tom Hardy with an A-lister like Penguin or Riddler....that would've been something. It's a shame.
-
I really don't see how he fits in Nolan's Batman. Catwoman I undestand, she's unavoidable and a character, that will work easily, but Bane is direct opposite of what Nolan has done.
-
I kind of like the ideas of these two in the movie. Although, wasn't Talia announced to be in the movie as well?
-
If I knew how butt hurt you were going to get over my comment I would have thrown some sugar on top GEEZ, but since you just had to be such a nasty little shit about it I won't so there. I shouldn't have to explain to you the challenge of pulling catwoman off on screen in a Nolan movie. Yes, cat ears look dumb I'm sorry, but Nolan knows it too, promise. Batman's ears are like horns so its different, and he made a 3 hour origin movie to justify having them and the rest of the outfit so it wasn't easy.
-
Didnt' we learn anything from the 2nd film with the Penguin and Catwoman? Devito and Pfeiffer. Each MAIN villain, or character is owed at least one full length movie to be introduced, or re-introduced. Look at the Avengers plan! Bane is one full comic intro and Catwoman several. When will Hollywood learn. I've seen Hatheway's dark side, although I can't remember the movie. Although her performance was more than adequate, time will tell if she was cast well. I just saw snippets of Princess diaries 2 and that character is etched in my brain. And I thought Chris Nolan had stepped down to an advisor on this one?
-
...Here's my nerdly thoughts on this: Bane will break Batman's back at the end of Dark Night Rises which paralyzes Batman/Bruce Wayne. As a result, we will get that awful "new Coke" Batman covering for Bruce like we did after Knightfall in the comics which will likely start a new movie trilogy with (likely) both a new director and a new actor playing crippled Bruce Wayne (who will conveniently also have his face bashed in to the point of lacking recognition and making it easier for a new actor to come in to play him). Here's what I think a new trilogy could entail: The first in the theoretical new trilogy likely focuses on new Batman getting his new role as "the bat" while Gotham gets overrun with crime at the command of Bane. Likely Selena Kyle will become Catwoman at this point likely as a non-villainous stealthy spy simply trying to uncover the truth about this new Batman. It is more a story about Catwoman at this point with an almost literal "curiosity kills the cat" context to the story which eventually leads her towards crime. The second film focuses on new Batman starting to lose his focus as a crime fighter and starting to become violent possibly even killing bad guys (likely Bane as one of them) by the end of the film which Batman is never supposed to do. It is possible that Catwoman has started to go bad at this point (feels the power of the mask?) and uses her seductive headgames much like a temptress to manipulate new Batman which may also be the catalyst for new Batman going bad. Morality will be a key theme here as both old and new Batman are really defined in this story. Presumably the final movie would have Bruce Wayne recovering following some sort of miracle surgery and having to take out new Batman who at this point is worse than the criminals he's supposed to stop and is doing nothing more than tarnishing batman's public image. The two will face off to decide once and for all who the real Batman is... Stay tuned... :-)
-
Nice. Although I don't remember the "power of the mask" bit? I got out when Superman died and variants ran amuck.

Bane from the comics is very different from the version everyone hates
by theblackvegtable
I think the problem is most people are thinking of the very bad batman and robin version of bane, the comic version is actually very different. As for Anne Hathaway they didn't just give her the role she had to test for it, so I'm sure Chris Nolan must know shes capable of what he wants otherwise he would've given it to someone else

and then chose the cast at random. This is the finale of his Batman Trilogy, and the success of this film will determine how the trilogy as whole is remembered (for the most part). I mean what do you think, he didn't bother doing any test-runs? Script readings with Bale to see if there's chemistry? These movies are so big for WB they probably spent months figuring this shit out. Sometimes I think a lot of you people just like bitching about something. Sometimes.

Queue the attempted plots from nerds who think we care “I see Bane defeating a disillusioned Batman at the halfway point, Catwoman takes over the blah blah blah”. Queue Nolan ringing up WB's “Hang on lads, forget that script that took me months and two other people to write, I’ve found the perfect story on a talkbalk” “But Chris we’re due to start shooting soon” “Don’t worry about that, this is too good to pass up, this nerd is a genius!”
-
Dress her in a tight leather outfit and I may not have other options but to furiously masturbate in the theater, but Bane is a weird choice. Granted though, I know very little about Bane, so who knows, maybe he'll work out.

Jesus Christ.
-
i hate this. having catwoman destroys Nolan's realistic world. having another fucking superhero turns the universe into pantomime. the whole reason batman works on his own is that we could believe that one man could hone himself into a perfect war machine, especially with years of training but catwoman wont have a backstory of years of training..of being a genetic fluke like Wayne... Oh and Anne Hathaway SUCKS too. I can already see her in that tight leather trying to be seductive, trying to be Michelle Pfeiffer but with a awkward body and bug eyes... I hate this news so much....fuck

So Bane is the villain, and Hardy is playing him!! Completely happy with this announcement! Nolan again surprises us all , after all the Hugo Strange, Black Mask, Riddler talk it turns out that Bane will be the chief baddie. This makes sense, in the Knightfall storyline Bane basically breaks Batman in a very methodical manner, he figures out his identity, plays all sorts of pyscholigal mind games with him, drives him to pysical exhaustion by releasing all of the Arkham inmates before finally breaking Bats back in the Batcave and tossing his almost dead body onto the streets of Gotham. This character is Batman's equal, phyically & mentally and with Hardy playing him should be a very different kind on cinematic Batman foe from what has gone before, and that can only be a good thing. And of course I'm delighted to hear that Selina Kyle will be in the movie. She's bound to put the Catwoman suit on, the fact that Catwoman is not mentioned in this announcement just means that they've done the same thing as when A Eckhart was announced as being Harvey Dent but no mention was made of Two Face! It's Nolan's last Batman movie!, he's hardly going to have Selina Kyle in there but no Catwoman! This is all great stuff indeed!
-
the press release says 'selina kyle', not catwoman...I live in hope then that Nolan will not resort to tight leather, impossible reflexes and a whip to represent that character.
-
...knows that the chick who plays Magdalena Kopp (Nora von Waldstätten) was the only choice for Catwoman. Just like when Eva Green went from The Dreamers to Casino Royale.
-
Nolan made The Dark Knight! It was a tremendous comic book film! Apart from a small noisy minority, you all loved it and have seen it multiple times, no? You all hated the casting of Heath Ledger and he went on to win the bloody Academy Award! So, why the fuck are you even starting to bitch now? Seriously, there isn't even a film yet and you're ready to bitch and moan already?! And what the he'll is with this Hugo Strange fetish all of a sudden? Nobody has ever mentioned him as a possible villain until recently and all of a sudden there is some huge disappointment because Strange isn't in the movie? Did I miss the press release that announced Strange as the greatest Batman villain of all time? What I do remember was everyone moaning about how Batman needs a strong physical opponent after the first two films. Bane certainly fits that mold. And let's not forget that Bane may be one of several villains in this film. We might end up with Deadshot, Strange and or Black Mask as well as Bane! I still argue that thus film should be set over the course of five years to a decade so that multiple villains can be introduced, Batman can break his back and then rise up after years of being paralysed. I predicted this story a year ago and still hold on to it becoming a reality! In the meantime, why not get excited about one small thing in your lives instead of assuming the worst. It could be worse if they went with some idiotic fanboy fantasy with the Riddler as some Seven-like serial killer. What a shit idea after we had the Joker play games with the lives of everyone in Gotham! But, yeah, a serial killer is a great idea for a sequel...
-
Bane: who the fuck he is? never hear of. Anne Hathaway is sexy as a tent pole. This movie will be a sad end for Nolan trilogy.
-
The end of the TDK left it nicely for that storyline whereby Catwoman becomes the vigilante in Batmans absence I would bet my bottom dollar the rest of the story plays out like this.. Hugo Strange IS involved as Banes Doctor or Psychologist or whatever, Bruce Wayne starts banging Selina Kyle behind the scenes, both initially unaware of each others secret identity. Bane breaks out with the help of Strange, Bane unleashes a load of crooks from Arkham (Bet this is where the Joker would have come into it) but instead of Penguin, Riddler and all the big names, its all Falcones crooks causing the problems. Catwoman is struggling, , Batman comes back to help her, Bane breaks his back at Wayne manor, Catwoman saves him and kills Bane, they kiss. The cheesy end,
-
So shut up. You all whinged when Heath got cast. Then it came out and you shut the fuck up, dincha?
-
oh hai, i can haz batman?
-
Wait
-
.... Bane was in Batman and Robin?!!! I know I have never watched the whole movie but seriously can't remember seeing him it it.
-
THE TOWN certainly proved it.<p>Without a doubt, Batman/Bruce Wayne would be defenseless in her presence. :-)
-
Agree with you. I think some people have a problem with Bane because he's been tainted by Batman & Robin and in their mind he's just a big, lumbering hulk. Nolan will undoubtedly give him more layers. I wouldn't be surprised if he spliced Bane and Hugo Strange. Selina Kyle I'm perfectly fine with, but Catwoman (if she is in fact in the film) is the one I have the problem with. I just have a hard time seeing her in the Nolanverse without it seeming gimmicky. I mean we already have one dude dressed up as a flying rodent in this "realistic" world. Then again when I read about the multiple Batmen vigilantes and that The Joker discusses how he got his scars, I thought both of those ideas sounded retarded, but they all worked out in the end. Nolan's track record so far has taught me to be less cynical, but I still remain cynical nonetheless.
-
The press release does NOT say Kyle is Catwoman so it'll be interesting to see how Nolan's take on her unfolds.
-
Then Anne Hathaway should be no problem. Anyone who thinks that she is not hot must be gay. I hope that Cillian Murphy returns, but other than that as long as no more villains are announced to clutter the cast and dilute the story we have no reason to be any less optimistic about DK Rises than we were for TDK.
-
First: I laugh at those calling Hathaway "ugly". Beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder, and while some may not find her attractive, calling her "ugly" is fucking ludicrous. Most of you are speaking of hot as though you get it on a regular basis, when in reality the only thing you get is sex from Palmela Handerson. Hathaway is pretty, has a great body, and can act. 99% of you fucktards wouldn't be able to control the swift and, most likely, tiny erection that would befall you were Ann Hathaway to approach you in a real life setting and thrust her womanly ways upon you. She's what's called "real life" and not the Maxim-created fairy tale of "hotness" that most of you pathetically cling to. Yes, there are some incredibly beautiful and insanely near "perfect" women out there, but guess what fellas, they are in the fucking minority. And "perfect" is as subjective a term as there is. Second: Tim Burton's Batman films have not aged well and for the most part are pretty laughable. Visually I love them, but man, what a pantload at times (yes, what a great moment when a single bullet from a hand gun takes out the mighty bat jet). Third: If you don't like what Nolan's done, that's cool, it just means you're a horse rapist and most likely a closet fart sniffer and cross dresser. And finally, I thank God™ that the assembled crew here doesn't have the ability to add input to film in terms of scripts and stories, because while you may often have legitimate gripes with what is presented on screen, most of the time your ideas to replace what is up there are fucking retarded.
-
**DITTO** How easily they turn indeed. One day they're sucking Nolan's ass and the next they're kicking it! Fuck! He (Nolan) knows what he's doing. He was spot on with his Joker casting (when some of you knuckleheads were up in arms) but after wards you were calling him God. So,just shut the fuck up, and let those know what they're doing, do. Personally, I think Nolan is a bit overrated, but he knows how to make a Batman movie. I'll wait to see it, before I say anything.
-
I do like the fact that Nolan uses characters not actually known by the populace. Except for the Joker (we don't know if Selina will be Catwoman or not...I'm sure she will, but who knows). That's what gives it, it's realistic feel.
-
There better be a fetish suit.
-
Hey, Nolan. --Are you absolutely...sure...that Kelly Brook couldn't act the part? She can have hired coaches for every line. She can do it. Really she can. You gotta believe! (tee, hee)

Hathaway was mentioned for Black Cat in the Spidey films
by amrisharmpit
So this was destined to happen. I like her, but I don't really see her in this role (she seems more like Lois Lane). Although truth be told, Catwoman is one character I wished Nolan hadn't used at all. Of all the villains from the Burton/Schumacher batch of films, Catwoman was done the best. Michelle Pfeiffer was amazing and set the bar incredibly high. I was really hoping for Nolan to go with Talia al Ghul, helping to connect TDKR to BB. Bane is a surprise, since it didn't seem to fit in the world Nolan established, so he must have his own idea of how that character can work. FYI - by using Bane and Catwoman, Nolan has now officially cancelled out all four movies from the Burton/Schumacher series.
-
but I can't believe there's a country anywhere in the world that would send a kid to prison to serve his father's sentence. Smacks of US 'Yeah that's probably what those evil foreigners would do.'
-
His past films have all been exceptional. Hathaway was testing with Bale all last week according to insiders, I'm sure she has chemistry with Bale. And I'm certain Nolan saw something in her that convinced him she'll be a great Catwoman. This movie is most likely going to be brilliant, and most of the naysayers will be eating crow in July 2012.
-
Catwoman is perfect for the whole theme of escalation. What more natural than some ballsy chick deciding to be a Batman copycat, only using a cat motif. And, according to insiders, the film will have lots of other freaks in cameo roles. The film will depict Batman's battle with the freak element that takes over Gotham after it was devastated by the events of TDK. Bane will be the ultimate freak. The Joker tested Batman mentally, Bane will be both a physical and mental challenge(the cpmic book Bane is a brilliant man, unlike the Schumacher bastardization). I predict that THE DARK KNIGHT RISES will be the greatest geek film released in the next three years. Better than THE AVENGERS, and probably as good or better than THE HOBBIT.
-

I'm surprised Nolan didn't cast Sarah Jessica Parker for Cat Woman
by THE_CHOPPAH
Still pretty close on the horse face front, though. The man has an interesting taste in women.
-
Even he doesn't want to touch this one.
-
Like Julia Roberts (another that doesn't look good in person), she has really distinct features that either you like or don't. Go to any college campus and at least half of the girls are far naturally prettier. It didn't help that Hathaway lost a ton of weight when she didn't have much to spare to begin with. Rebecca Hall would have been a good choice, imo. Ashley Greene wouldn't have been bad, either.
-
I was watching her new movie Sex and Other Drugs on Tuesday and I thought too bad she isn't in the running to play Catwoman she would be perfect. I too believed that false rumor about Talia and Hugo Strange being in the film. So color me happy when I came to AICN and saw the Warner Press Release about the casting. As far as Hardy goes I think we are going to get a smart dangerous Bane who is Batmans' equal in every way. So July 2012 can't get here soon enough.
-
Would be interesting if the League of Shadows had Hugo Strange in their employ, setting him up as a consultant for the GCPD in the capture of the Batman, so that the League of Shadows could either convince Batman to join them and/or kill him.. Bane would be in Gotham to kill Batman in order to establish himself as the Kingpin of the crime world. Catwoman, well, she finds Batman fascinating and wants to cross path with him being the jewel thief she is. .. So many ideas.. But still.. Bottom line.. Nolan has created 2 great Batman movies and built enough trust to see a 3rd one in the making.. So, it's good enough for me.
-

All you have to do is google Julie Newmar Catwoman and any picture that comes up will tell you that that IS Catwoman. You don't have to be old, you just need an interest in history. And have a set of balls. Even gay guys know that's what Catwoman should look like.
-
Then Anne could have reprised her role as the White Queen.
-
Bane was never really one of Batman's more interesting villains. He was basically a one trick pony who amounts to very little in the overall scheme of things of the Batman Pantheon. Personally, I think that there are plenty of other routes you can take.
-
...it's a long one. Bet Warners are loving this. Still, its keeping me amused at work so carry on with the moaning. Re: Catwoman, wish they had gone for Lily Cole, can't really act but would look great in the suit. And she has got those bonkers cat eyes. Save some cash in the make-up dept.
-
it's the only way to go
-
And he coulda kept Batman distracted with his deadly mind games having Bats run all over Gotham City solving riddles in order to save the citizens like in Die Hard 3 while he and Catwoman pulled off some huge heist together.
-
furry batsuit? Or, furry catsuit? Both would work!

It was eyebrow raising about Heath Ledger as the Joker, but that worked out and hopefully this does too as far as Catwoman. Tom Hardy as Bane sounds coo' to me. I thinq he was picked because he was so buff for Bronson. I bet he's beefing up for this role as we post.

by DarfurOnTheRocks2
Mmmmmmmm Hathaway

I'm still holding out for Ra's al Ghul rising from a Lazarus Pit to manipulate Bruce even more. Given this news, it can't be any more implausible. More seriously though - Nolan keeping Bane realistic is going to be interesting to see in execution. The character is tailor-made to outrageous comic book villain specs so should this press release turn out not to be a complete steaming load, I'm curious to see what he'd be molding the character into for his take.
-
seems about as inspired as casting Danny Huston as Clock King.

I remember the day when it was anounced that Heath Ledger had been cast as The Joker. I followed that news at IMDB and the reaction form most people was the same: they fucking hated it. The usual jokes of Brokenback Batman flew left and right. I admit that for me it was a leftfield decision, but because of MEMENTO, BATMAN BEGINS and THE PRESTIGE, i didn't felt any bad about it because IN NOLAN I TRUST. The man always gives me good reasons to trust his judgement. And is ee history repeat itself again. Back when nolan anounced that Ledger was The Joker and most hated the isdea and mocked it. And how later they ate crow. And i see the same shit repating again. What mroe cdoes it take for people to start trusting Nolan a bit more? What more great movies the man needs to do to earn the respect and trust he deserves? Or does the AICN's geek only trust the untalented hacks who fucks up established beloved franchises like Jar Jar Abrams? IN NOLAN WE TRUST, idiots!
-
The dumbness of the Anti-Nolan brigade is too fucking distracting.
-
The Riddler is too obvious an choice (always a bad thing), and he would look like a copy and paste of The Joker from TDK, anyway.
-
J. Jonah Jameson that is!

Keeping the title in mind, the plot will (hopefully) be...
by Cletus Van Damme
Batman being run ragged by Bane orchestrating a siege upon Gotham. Bane, being Bruce's intellectual equal, knows that Batman's obsession will not allow him to rest, sleep or eat until the siege is stopped. Somewhere during Batman's battle with the multitude of villains, he and Catwoman form an uneasy alliance. The siege is stopped, and Bane appears and challenges Batman. Bane easily wins, breaks his back, and Catwoman and/or Alfred gets him back to Wayne Manor to recuperate. He recuperates, kicks the shit out of Bane, and the Dark Knight Rises...after all, if you can bounce back from a broken spine, what CAN'T you do?
-
Hey friend, how you been? I understand your enthusiasm for Olivia Wilde. I saw TRON LEGACY too. But i'm quite happy with Anna Hathaway. She's beautiful, but more importantly, she is a very good actress. And in all of Nolan's Batman movies he has been quite careful in casting good talented actors evenfor smaller cameo roles. Well, you could say that Katie Holmes is not all that much, but then again it was not Nolan's first choice and she was imposed on him by the studios. Originally Nolan wanted Emilie Blunt to play Rachael Dawes, but back then she was a nobody as the studios were concerned.

The Riddler is an entirely different character than Joker
by THAT_SAID_THE_CHOPPAH
He is not chaotic like the Joker, but the complete opposite. His criminal insanity is methodical and controlled like Jigsaw in Saw. It would not be uncommon for E. Nigma to set up an elaborate trap years in advance. The Joker would never last more than a minute. He needs instant gratification. The Riddler should have been the next movie villain. Yes, it's the obvious choice, but I would have loved to see what Nolan did with the character.
-
Olivia Wilde is both very beautiful and she's a damn fine actress, as testified by HOUSE and yes, even TRON LEGACY, where, in my mind, she did the best acting of the movie, or at least played the most sympathetic character to perfection. And she's gorgeaus. Worth mention that again.

... is the stuff of comedy. I get many laughs reading the inane nonsense of the anti-Nolan crowd. Iyt's as if it now became uncool to love good talented filmamkers and their movies. It's the street kewl shit to gom agaisnt th talented filmmakers and support the shitty ones like Mickey Bayass and Jar Jar Shit Abrams. This shit is weird beyond belief. But damn funny.

Asimov, Hathaway definitely has the acting chops
by THAT_SAID_THE_CHOPPAH
She also has the body. I'm just not sure she can pull off the sexiness and sultriness that Catwoman requires. I've never seen her do it. She always comes off to me a little tom boyish, which is absolutely wrong for the role. Catwoman is strong and can kick most men's asses, but she is completely feminine.
-
I have encountered few on the Internet more immature or irrational than this person. He just keeps coming back with repeated hatred for Nu Trek at every corner on these TB boards, ad nauseum. As if to shore-up any possible weakness in his argument that JJ Abrams and Nu Trek have ruined his life. It's pretty clear it has ruined your life, okay? We get it. I like steak but I don't go into continuous tirades because someone else is a vegetarian. It's called differing opinions. It's called life. Move on Asswipe. Not everyone is going to like the same thing. Get that through your thick, stupid Limey head. When it comes to these Talkback boards, you've become nothing more than a tired act with your venom against Abrams/Nu Trek.
-
They both have poor taste when it comes to casting female comic book characters that are supposed to be HOT (Selina Kyle and Mary Jane Watson).
-
I was hoping he would reprise his role as Mr. Freeze! And why isn't Jim Carrey involved in this?! What are you THINKING, Nolan?!
-
I'm of a mind to make some mookie!
-
That's a great quote, man. You can actually "hear" him say it when you read the words.
-
At the risk of defending Nolan or Raimi, I am glad they are smart enough to know that there is slightly more that goes into casting a character than an actors level of attraction. Their actors look exactly how they are supposed to look. NORMAL. Neither Holmes, nor Gyllenhaal are especially gorgeous women. This is good, as the character they are playing is not supposed to be. Dawes is a DA, not a supermodel. I may not be a fan of either actress, but at least the part is cast to character, and the movie is better for it. It's BELIEVABLE. So to say that the director doesn't know how to cast women is preposterous. Having said that, Dawes is a stupid character and the best scene of Dark Knight is when Dawes explodes. Well done, Nolan. You made of for the entire first film with that one.
-
This is also very much in keeping with Nolan's 'realistic' Batverse, to cast 'normal' looking people. Gorgeous women just don't dress as cats and run around at night committing petty crimes. They may in the comic books, but not in a film that is continually seeking to maintain as much realism and believability as possible. Does a supermodel Catwoman really make sense in Nolan's Gotham? Even Burton made Selena look like a dork...
-
but I heard wb is about to pass the bat baton to Darren Aronfski.
-
Batman gets Bale, The Joker gets Ledger, Bane gets Hardy and even Lucius Fox gets Freeman! Do you mean to tell me yahoos want Tom "can't act out of a paper bag" Welling as Superman? Armie Hammer FTW. Seriously.
-
Bane can be made into a fantastic character. Batman's true nemesis in the sense that he is the mirror-image of Batman (an aspect Nolan clearly seems interested in exploring, as he did with the Joker) in that he is a victim of tremendous hardship from an early age, and he used both his brains and his obsession to forge himself into something formidable. I like that Bane. Also, I don't see Batman getting broken and then recovering to beat Bane. In fact, I think it would fit Nolan's interest in Batman as a person to have Bruce Wayne in a wheelchair overcome his obsessions and find an exit from the whole Batman thing (which Nolan has always portrayed as having a negative impact on Bruce's life), and going on to grow and to find fulfilment in his life through healthier means. Also, if he is indeed going to go down the sidekick route, I think Barbara Gordon will be a female Robin. I mean she may be called Batgirl (or something less ridiculous) in the movie, but she'll basically be Robin. Perhaps based on The Dark Knight returns comic.
-
even if Nolan decides not use the Cat ears so don't worry your little head off about it.

Nolan (unlike fanboys) refuses to cast with his penis
by trojanwilliams
I guarantee right now that Hathaway will be the best part of Dark Knight Rises. Nolan tends to get fantastic performances out of his actors and anyone who saw Hathaway in Rachel Getting Married, Devil Wears Prada or Brokeback Mountain knows the girl can act when given sufficiently adult (read: non princess-related) material. Also since when have the performances in any of Nolan's movies been the problem? All of a sudden he makes bad casting decisions? Anne Hathaway will run away with next year's holy shit film moment. I'm calling it now.
-
Nolan resurrected the franchise with Batman Begins and with The Dark Knight he set a bench mark that perhaps only he can surpass with The Dark Night Rises. Nolan is, more than anything else, an incredible storyteller and his track record with his take on Batman should only inspire confidence. Tom Hardy will be great as Bane. He's a fantastic actor with incredible prescence and his Bane will be cunning and physically imposing. And Anne Hathaway? Nolan casts actors and Hathaway is versitile. She auditioned, as did a number of others, so I'm sure that Nolan has seen something in her during that process to convince him that she's the right choice. She will amaze as Catwoman.
-
films Hathaway has been in other than Love and Other Drugs, because that whole "have you seen her act?" rebuttal wasn't holding water when you cite ONE FUCKING FILM. I'd have left The Devil Wears Prada out though. No one involved in that deserves praise for it. A dog doesn't shit on a carpet and get thanked for it by its owner after all.
-
and it's interesting casting, certainly. I put all trust in Nolan.
-
The joker stated at his core he was about chaos but think about it. Everything he did was a well calculated plan, from the bank robbery to the arrest, and break out, to the corruptioin of Harvey Dent. The anticipation of chaos played a part in his planning but it was well conceived and calculated plan. It would be hard to dream up and even more complex scheme without it being too convoluted.

I really HOPE TO GOD this news CHANGES in the VERY NEAR FUTURE
by MrMadScience
-
MAYBE Anne Hathaway will go into a sugar-coated diabetic coma, and the movie gods will prevail this go-around!?...One can only hope anyway...
-
Unfortunately, I couldn't agree more..
-
I truly hope to God you're right and that this press release has BAD, BAD INFO and that Megan Fox will, in fact, be Catwoman; while I know that a lot of people will/would bitch about that casting, as well, I firmly believe she would make a MUCH, MUCH better Catwoman/Selina Kyle than Anne Hathaway:-D
-
I have LEARNED MY LESSON..I KNEW I shouldn't have seen "Batman Forever", but I DID..I KNEW I shouldn't have seen "Batman and Robin"..but I DID...well, I think I've finally learned my lesson, and since my gut is telling me that this will be terrible and that I ABSOLUTELY SHOULD NOT SEE IT..I am not going to..(sigh)..it's simply time to let this one go..
-
..At least it would be more INTERESTING than Anne "Lane Bryant Salesperson" Hathaway!?..good Lord..
-
She's a British actress who is 1000 times more "exotic" than Hathaway. Don't get me wrong, Anne is a beautiful woman, but errs on the "frumpy", "cutesy" side for me... like Meg Ryan from the 80's and 90's. Catwoman deserves to be portrayed as a bad ass chick, in a realistic fashion or not. I believe Arterton's looks ALONE gives her that edge. Plus I'm sure she's done stage work with Tom Hardy before. A far less obvious choice than Angelina Jolie, who could "potentially" bring the same amount of edge she would... more than Hathaway, anyway. But like someone has already said, casting is done, and the ship has already sailed.
-
..either that, or Nolan was drunk!?..What ELSE could POSSIBLY EXPLAIN THIS CASTING DECISION!?..
-
I thought the Knightfall storyline was lame. It was just a money-grabbing gimmick by DC. I haven't really read anything else with Bane in it, so I can't speak too much more to his character, but I'm not excited about it. Tom Hardy is a great actor, however, and I'm curious to see what he does. Anne Hathaway is gorgeous, but I can't see her playing Cat Woman. Whoever said that she's more Lois Lane is 100% correct IMO. I trust Nolan. I'll reserve any harsh criticism until I actually see the movie.
-
I have seen lots of photographs of Anna Hathaway where she pulls the sultry bvery, very well. She never had the chance to do so in movies, due to some typecating she's been subjected. So far we have been privy of her acting (and singing) talent and she has played the pretty nice girl ingenué very well. But i say, she can be sexy. Her promotional photos are a testement to that.
-
There are no weak arguments agaisnt Jar Jar Abrams's RETARD SHIT TEREK. The only weak arguments are form the supporters of that shitty movie whose whole argumentation is based on the bullshit from the movie's advertizement. Or from the stupidity of the fans. And if you have a problem, talk to the hand and stop sucking Jar Jar Abram's man-tit.

I can't believe people are chosing Megan Fox over Hathaway!!!
by AsimovLives
Who are this people, morons? Who does this people think Christopher Nolan is? Michael Bay? Since when Nolan hasn't favoured talent in his movies? Nolan is not like Michelle Bay, who only casts according to his dick. Nolan actually takes the movies he makes and the audiences who watch them seriously. Nolan is in the job to make good movies. And hiring good actors helps to achieve that. Hardy and Hathaway are very good choices, only morons would disagree. Only retards would favour Fox over Hathaway.

mrmadscience, you have absolutly NOT learned your lesson

"very talented actor" should read "very talented director" (director Christopher Nolan)
by AsimovLives
Nonsense like that mess up my reasoning.
-
I also think that Gemma Anterton is a very talented and very lovely actress. i would had also loved if she had been cast as Catwoman in Nolan's 3rd Batman movie. But Hathaway was cast, and i also like her as Catwoman as much i would had loved Anterton. My own personla choice would be Emilie Blunt. But frankly, i'm loving this casting news. Nolan has cast very talented actors for his next movie... again.
-
Many couldn't also see Heath Ledger playing The Joker and look how it turned out. Trust in Nolan.
-
Carrie Ann-Moss, Hilary Swank, Katharine Isabelle, Katie Holmes, Scarlett Jonanson, Piper Perabo, Rebecca Hall, Maggie Gyllenhall, Ellen Page, Marion Coutilard and Anne hathaway are now not considered pretty women? Who the hell thinks like this? Are you gays or something? You would be so lucky if any of thos fine looking women would even bother to look in your direction, dickwads! Jesus, some people! It takes a moron to think that female beauty starts and stops with the Megan Fox type.
-
Gay asses of the dumb kind.
-
Obviously, my criteria for female attractiveness is far more open minded and wide then your. I'm not immune to the charms of young Megan Fox, but if i had to chose between merely apretty woman like fox or a pretty and talented woman like Hathaway or any of those i aforementione above, i go for the later. And Marion Coutilard is a goddess. She out-charms Fox anyday of the week. Fox had that skank slut look down pat. Coutilard is beyond elegant, and thus, gorgeaus. Hathaway is also an extremely elegant woman as well. Megan Fox doesn't have a beauty that matches the elegant style of Connelly. No, Megan Fox's beauty style can better be called skunk white trash chique. Don't insult Connelly by comparing her with Fox. The only revolutionary thing that Jar Jar Abrams and his his two assclowns Bobby Coño Orcito and Alex The Klutz Kurtzman did was to turn Star Trek into complete retardness and idioticy, they made Star Trek for retard illiterate rednecks. As revolution goes, it's shit. I never claime dthat Nolan is the second coming of Kubrick. Nolan is the first coming of Nolan. Nolan is his own man. and nolan makes movies for people who actually understand and care and truly enjoy cinema. Those who don't understand that are in the wrong. Small wonder those same people enjoy Jar Jar Abram's retard stupid dumb ass movies like his SHIT TREK. You aren't immune to the pleasures of multiposting yourself. Yeah, try hide under the excuse of "i was just joking" nonsense. As for my argumention why Jar Jar Abrams's movies are crap and why Nolan's are grat, i already wrote DOZENS OF THOUSANDS OF WORDS ABOUT THE SUBJECT. Too bad you came late to the party. Mila Kunis, Kate Beckinsale, Olivia Wilde, Amanda Seyfried and Sienna Miller are all obviously pretty woman with acting talent (the british disagree on Sienna Miller, though, because they know her more for her love and personal life then the movies she makes). Eva Green and Naomi Watts are stunningly beautiful woman and very talented. Eva Green would had been a brillant choice to play Catwoman. i have agree with that before in older talkbacks about this subject. Fate wanted that Nolan went with Hathaway instead. You know what i think? I think Eva Green was approached to play the part. She's a logical choice and i bet she was, at the very least, considered and contacted for that effect. Hathaway is a great choice, and i know Nolan can make magic with her. The same way when he did with Heath Ledger for The Joker in TDK. And to say nolan is an untalented filmmaker is just stupid. No two ways about it.

I do agree with Viggeo about the Riddler in next movie
by THAT_SAID_THE_CHOPPAH
My imagination runs wild with the possibilities of what Nolan could have done with the Riddler instead of the one dimensional Bane. Batman would have been required to do some actual detective work which I very much would have liked to have seen. I don't know much about Bane except he looks like an S&M version of a Lucha Libra wrestler, so I'll reserve judgment.
-
I understand the appeal that THe Riddler has to many of the fans. I also share that. but thing is, The ridldler in another Batman movie would just look like a carbon copy of The Joker. The Joker's gambit in TDK had many similiarities to the way the Riddler did his modus operanti. It would look like repetition. I agree with Nolan's decision to go for another villain.
-
Like most people, I don't know anything about Bane. And I can't get excited about the idea of Anne Hathaway in a catsuit either, and I should be excited!
-
Obviously, you have never seen any of the more alluring promotional photographs done on Hathaway. Because if you had, the notion of Hathawaty in a catsuit would make your little batman rise. As for Bane, a smany have said, he's not how he was portaited in BATMAN & ROBIN. He was created to be an intellectual equal to Batman while be even stronger, with lots of cunning and single-mindless. Nolan can go to town with that. And always remember what the geeks said about Ledger and the crow they ate afterwards. History, man, you can learn from it
-
Always gets a laugh out of me. Ha Worst. Idea. Ever.
-
In all of Nooan's movies, it has always been a prerequesite that an actor has to have acting chops to be cast in one. And not just ordinary acting talent, but to be damn good at it. Megan Fox might not be as terrible as many claim, but she isn't good either. She's at best, banal. Not good enough for a Nolan movie. As it should.
-
Nooan's = Nolan's

The one thing Fox has is the waistline for Catwoman
by THAT_SAID_THE_CHOPPAH
Asi, I've been checking out pictures of Hathaway as you've suggested and she's definitely a hotty, but they're gonna need to get her a serious corset. Also, I can't find a good picture of her derrière. Catwoman MUST have a Grade A A$$!
-
at least as a character in a Chris Nolan film. I never cared much for him in the comics, but he did do more than just break Batman's back. He took apart Bats' life piece by piece first, ran him ragged, and even discovered his true Identity. That seems like something that Nolan could run with and turn into something great on screen (although Nolan already did the mass Arkham breakout in Begins). Plus I doubt that Nolan would use the breaking of Batman's back to close out his trilogy (as someone suggested earlier), especially in an installment called The Dark Knight Rises.

Shut up both of you AsimovLive & ViggoMorg pair of tools
by Smack_Teddy
you both sound like a bunch of Morons with no real clue, insight, imagination or knowledge into what makes anything from good entertainment or art... just what sounds like a good bitch in words. <p>Asi i only tag you because you wont shut up about JJs Trek & now your bringing gay into it.
-
But lazy prick that I am, I didn't look. Does anyone remember that flick Hathaway got the Oscar nom for? Could that be what drove Nolan to pick her? Also, Princess Diaries? Not that bad a flick. Funny little kid's movie, and while the 'glasses = ugly / no glasses = hottt' cliche is old, Mary Poppins gives an awesome ice queen performance, and Hathaway was good. Sorry, it was watchable, in my opinion. Also, she was mega hot in that flick where she goes down on that frat guy, and gets nude...Frantic? Yeah, that flick was Cinemax GOLD! But she was nominated for an Oscar. Hell, who knew Tom Hardy had 'Bronson' in him when you watched Star Trek: Nemesis, and saw him as the femmy Picard/Romulan clone? Nolan rarely fucks up, is my point.
-
A tool like you tell me to shut up? Funny that.
-
Indeed.
-
The more I read your posts, the more I realize what an idiot you are, someone who wouldnt have comprehended asimov's stories if he tried.<p>Abrams Star Trek was far truer to the original characters than Nolan's Batman series has been, for starters.<p>Yes, Hathaway will be sufficient as Catwoman, she simply wont be as amazing as heath was as joker, for reasons people have pointed out already.<p>Hardy as Bane could be fine, except Nolan is going to diminish the fucking character, ignore the origin story and give him all of 20 minutes screen time.<p>Le Sigh
-
You have no concept of irony, do you? Because for somebody to accuse others of idioticy and then make such a dumb claim that Jar Jar Abrams's SHIT TREK is true to the classic Trek characters... you really don't understand what irony is, do you? You do not accuse others of idoticy and then say something very idiotic. It ruins the point of the insult.
-
One who supports the Jar Jar Abrams idiotic shit while put down a truly talented and imaginative filmmaker like Nolan.
-
We can thank asimovlives for anthropomorphizing the very concept of an argument from emotion. Again, a very good reason why his posts are nothing but an insult to Asimov. As for Nolan, he is an amazing filmmaker, and all his films are amazing, evern with the complete lack of male/female chemistry. His Batman films, while great in their own way, are not true to the characters at all. I understand asimovlives is not a batman fan in the least and just a Nolan groupie, so this also can be forgiven.
