Terrence Malick Consulted With NASA For TREE OF LIFE!

Beaks here...

We've still got five long months to go before Terrence Malick's TREE OF LIFE arrives in theaters (Fox Searchlight currently has it scheduled for release on May 27, 2011), and when I read a cool article like the one Steven Zeitchik just posted to the Los Angeles Times, the wait only gets more unbearable.

In an interview with cinematographer Emanuel "Chivo" Lubezki, Zeitchik confirms something that's been out there as rumor for a while now: Malick consulted with NASA for the film's space footage (some of which is glimpsed in the beautiful trailer - which is always worth watching). As for how this footage was shot, and cinema pioneer Douglas Trumbull's role in capturing it, that's still something of a mystery. Last year, Trumbull told Rebecca Keegan that he suggested Malick utilize old-school f/x on TREE OF LIFE. Did he? Guess we'll have to wait until May to find out.

The bulk of Zeitchik's interview with Chivo centers on Malick's aesthetic, which is "meant to trigger tons of memories, like a scent or a perfume." So this is Malick's REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS PAST? Um, wow. Head over to the Los Angeles Times to read the whole article.
