I’m just a Black man trying to keep my Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day hard in a cruel and harsh world.

Published at: Jan. 12, 2011, 5:07 p.m. CST by quint

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!

Spike Lee makes his first appearance in this column with this look behind the scenes of Do The Right Thing. It’s about time really and I very much enjoy this shot, which seems fairly ordinary until you realize Danny Aiello and John Turturro are messing around behind a deadly serious looking Spike Lee.

I always know I picked a good image when the shot makes me want to rewatch the movie. I get that feeling from this one and I hope you do, too.

Enjoy and click to embiggen!

Tomorrow’s pic really likes Gene Kelly… and plants!

    I'm sorry guys...

    by SebastianHaff

But my all time favorite Spike Lee joint is and always will be Summer of Sam. That movie blew my mind when I saw it in the theater the summer before eighth grade. It also sparked my life-long obsession with 70's era NYC, which explains a huge chunk of my love for 70's/80's Italian splatter flicks, which always shot exteriors in grungy ass Manhattan before Giuliani turned it into NY Disney. My affinity for New York punk and the CBGB crowd starts here with Brody's band. Plus, I was already obsessed with serial killers, so the whole bit with Berkowitz (which is actually more of a subplot than the focus of the movie) was just icing on the cake.

Also, it was the first time I ever saw an orgy, and that meant a lot to me when I was 12.

That said, Do the Right Thing is definitely my number two Spike movie. Would be number 1 if not for my nostalgia for SOS.

  • I find a lot of people call it a racist film from time to time..but he got on blacks and the actions of the the black characters majorly in this film. They definetly did not walk away unscatched!

    I met Spike Lee once

    by KnightShift

Was in college at the time. Lee came for a day to shoot some scenes for HE GOT GAME (I didn't know until a few years ago that I can be seen walking around in the background, LOL). I didn't even know who he was: yeah I'd heard of his name but didn't know what he looked like until a friend said "Dude that's Spike Lee." Anyhoo, his presence on campus was a DISASTER. All kinds of fringe kooks came to exploit his being there. It was so bad that my school instituted a policy to never again allow anything but students to shoot a film on campus (something I learned a few years later when I tried to use the library to film a scene. Not even alums allowed, no thanks to Spike Lee...)

Black Activists have always been hated in America.

    by ganymede3010

Despite the fact that America looks back at MLK through rose colored glasses, the fact of the matter is he was the Al Sharpton of his time. He was largely despised outside of the Black Community and one of the most hated men in America, as was Muhammad Ali. Even todays Black activists are revilled, being accused of being racists themselves just because they dare to speak up for the historically disadvantaged. I asked one of my friends who hates Spike Lee, and thinks he's a racist, to name me one racist thing he's done or said. And let me tell you, he was completely tongue tied. Spike Lee, isn't a racist, if he was, he wouldn't be able to cast the premiere white actors like Ed Norton, Clive Owen, Adrien Brody, Jodie Foster, etc.

    Everyone suffers from "racial guilt"

    by ganymede3010

Example, whenever I turn on the news, and some mad man has committed a henious crime, I always say, I surely hope he isn't my race. That's because there's always going to be someone who'll take advatage of it and use it for political gain. It's fair to say that everyone has racial guilt, because everyones race/people/culture has committed crimes against hummanity. That's why Xeno-Morphs despise human beings..JK.. For real though, I beleive everyone gets my point.

    New Harry animation

    by Nasty In The Pasty

    Huh?!

  • Jan. 12, 2011, 11:31 p.m. CST

    Spike

    by Darth Thoth

Is one of the great living directors working today. And history will remember him as such. It's a shame that the minute his name is mentioned on this site certain people feel the need to call him a racist and try and polarize everything. 1) Name a single racist movie he's ever made. 2) As was previously mentioned, if he's so racist then why has he worked with some of the best white talent out there over the years? 3) Why do I even dignify such foolish acusations with my post? Spike's work is important because race is so important in this country. And the only way we're ever going to move forward TOGETHER, is by wrestling with these issues through dialogue. As one who believes in the power of film, I for one appreciate Spike's attempts to push these conversations forward.

  • Jan. 12, 2011, 11:48 p.m. CST

Phifty2, by your definition, the entire AICN is racist.

    by ganymede3010

How many times was rumored that Captain America was going to be played by Will Smith, and all of the Talkbackers came out of the wood-works saying "Only a White man should play Captain America". Or all of the dumb ass nerds complaining that Heimdall is being played by a Black man. So by your definition, 95% of AICN is flat out racist.

    by SirBiatchReturns

You really can't argue against this. It's in the canon. Some of you idiots know this, right? Of course, the same old symptom of name-calling someone racist when a Black person actually aims to address racial problems in America. He/she becomes the problem, lol. Ironic and sad at the same time. Just like some of the people in this talkback.

    by Mostholy

Lee has made lots of great movies -- DO THE RIGHT THING, CLOCKERS, MALCOLM X, HE GOT GAME, SUMMER OF SAM, BAMBOOZLED, THE 25th HOUR, INSIDE MAN, WHEN THE LEVEES BROKE. And even his misfires -- MIRACLE AT ST. ANNA, SHE HATE ME, GIRL 6 -- are much, much, much better than atrocities like THE HAPPENING, LADY IN THE WATER, and SIGNS. That dog don't hunt.

    truth?

    by deelzbub

I knew an old veteran who had fought in WWII and Korea, and he would tell us war stories, as old men will do. He said they had black soldiers in his regiment, and when they came under fire, all the black soldiers ran away. I have often questioned and tried to rectify this with Hollywood's depictions of blacks in Glory and the Tuskegee Airmen. Old time racists would paint all blacks with one brush as being sorry individuals, lazy, unsanitary, scared of cats and trees, prone to theft and violence against one another. Abraham Lincoln himself doubted whether the "Negro race" would ever contibute positively to society. Contrast this with today's realities, my doctor is black, my congressman is black, the mayor of the capital of my state is black, the President of my country is black. But Haiti, a black country run by black politicians, is and has been in disarray for how long? How about post-colonial African countries run by blacks? Not the best rack record. As a white man living in a black city, I am more than willing to give black folks a fair chance, but I often wonder what is truth.

    PETER FRANKS

    by BringingSexyBack

I'm not racist. I just don't buy the premise that terrorizing a man and destroying his business, livelihood and life's work is 'the right thing'. It seems to me that only a demented psyche cannot see that Sal and his sons were the ONLY good people in the entire movie and didn't deserve what they got. Sadly, they gave Spike's character a job despite his incessant laziness and hook-ups while making a pizza delivery, and in return the guy instigates the destruction of his business. Is that really the right thing? As for Radio Rahim ... he got what he deserved. You don't resist a police officer and not expect to get the horns. Society was better off without him, I think we can agree on that.

And since the most virulent members of the Teabaggers have hijacked the Republican Party, and only the most conservative candidates get their support...I still tend to believe that if she does run, she'll get their hooded nod. A landslide of historic proportions awaits such a nomination. The woman won't get more than 35% of the popular vote in a general election. So it is with great enthusiasm that I proclaim... Run, Sarah, Run!

I mean no disrespect to you or Peter Franks and I try not to paint all blacks with the same brush, but you cannot deny that the prevailing behavior among blacks is abhorable, and it reflects on the rest of the black community at large. I'd like to judge black people by Barack Obama's example, but you have to admit, that's downright impossible. Look, I have to stand by what I said about DTRT. It's absolutely painful to watch this Italian family being harassed, cheated and then finally destroyed by the community they are trying to serve. Were there some blacks who were decent and good? Yes, I recall there was an old man who tried to talk sense to the mob but was practically trampled for it. I happen to think that DTRT is, regretfully, an honest and accurate portrayal of black life in America - still to this day. I am dumbfounded by how blacks continue to embrace ghetto culture rather than move away from it. It does the black community no good and it is a cancer afflicting our nation. My biggest problem with DTRT - and this is in line with why so many people view Spike as racist - is that the message of the movie, embodied in its title and climax, is that it's preferable to destroy the 'other' (meaning non-blacks) than to change yourself. It's why the mob didn't burn down the Korean deli only when the owner screamed "I black, you me, same!".
