An Art Department First Look at the RED SKULL from CAPTAIN AMERICA!
Hey folks, Harry here...
This time with a look at The Red Skull, by way of our awesome hermanos de MundoHype, who managed to infiltrate the super secret lair of MARVEL to retrieve the following awesomeness. Now - here's the big surprise, RED SKULL looks like the comic character. And yes, what we're all curious as hell about, is 1) How well does this translate to LIVE ACTION and 2) How much time do we get with the RED SKULL looking like THE RED SKULL and not looking like Hugo Weaving? Because as much as I love Hugo Weaving, I actually have no desire to see his face for longer than about 3 minutes in this movie, cuz I've waited my entire life to see THE RED SKULL on screen. And with the Cosmic Cube ta boot!!! Here ya go...

I do love the look of THE RED SKULL & his Uniforms!
-
But no swastika armband. :-(
-
Can't wait for this one.
-
I'm looking forward to seeing the real thing.
-
But the Nazi logo is more menacing than the HYDRA one.
-
This is how you do it, Hollywood. It is a new version of the character for film, but it LOOKS LIKE the Red Skull. Well done. Let's see if the director, the producers, and the film studio screw it up.
-
Nicely drawn, guy or gal who drew these!
-
seriously...Harry is now a permanent first?

Cool concept art. Hopefully they make quality toys for little kids and big kids.
by Stereotypical Evil Archer
You know, good action figures, like what GI JOE and STAR WARS have. So far Marvel hasn't made actions figures of that size of comparable quality.
-
What is more annoying? Harry, in general. Or Harry posting first in Talkbacks. Has anyone explained why he started doing that? Does it have to do with keywords or Google or some bullshit? Or did Harry make a resolution to be more douchey in 2011.
-
"I lost money on a flesh skull (or Hagler!)"
-
Johnston might not be the most exciting director in other films, but he sure knows how to make the WWII era beautiful. If this thing looks half as good as the Rocketeer i'll be a very happy man.
-
...Squid armband on Red Skull = Flames on Optimus = nipples on the Batsuit!
-
Haryy says he has waited his entire life to see the Red Skull on screen. Wasn't he in the Matt Salinger movie version? I know it wasn't popular, but he was there Harry, he was there. Wasn't he?
-
It's still too cartoony in that picture to get a sense of what it will look like on screen. And is that the All-Spark (or generic movie mcguffin equivalent) he's holding?
-
...it's not Harry posting those. It is most likely someone he knows and with his permission; Yoko, his nephew, but it's not him.
-
Do you think he's shaved his face off again? Samuel L Jackson in Iron Man is taken from the Ultimate range of comics.. looks like ol'skullface could be too..

Harry's a nice guy, let him have his first posts...
by HarryKnowlesNonExistentInceptionReview
...He never uses his "black posts" to bitchslap anyone (even if they deserve it) like some other contributors to this site who shall remain unnamed.
-
"You know, good action figures, like what GI JOE and STAR WARS have. So far Marvel hasn't made actions figures of that size of comparable quality." Yes they have. The Marvel Universe line.
-
Scriptflags.com has been forwarded a Dark Knight Rises script! Why aren't you on this Harry??? Read all about it here: http://www.scriptflags.com/2011/01/batmanthe-dark-knight-rises-script.html

-
You actually believe that nipples on the Batman's suit to be PC? Really? That they appear to be a wink to gay men everywhere–as did Schumacher's Batman in general–really strikes you as PC (which I assume you mean as politically correct)? I don't believe in the term, particularly as it is used commonly, but I am curious.
-
OK. It's been a long time since I read a Captain America comic but if my memory serves me correctly he fought NAZI's in WWII. Am I wrong? If that is the case, this is terrible if they're gonna make the big bad of WWII hydra and not the nazi's. I know they did it for their recent Avengers cartoon but I would think the movie would have more balls then that. Please someone correct me if i'm wrong about cap fighting nazis.
-
Word on the trailer is that General Joe is waiting on the effects to be perfect. It is cut and waiting on those digital wizards to get up to Joe's standards apparently. SO - I'd say that's probably anywhere from a couple weeks to a couple of months from now.
-
While the art department sketches are nice, why did AICN not post the ACTUAL photo of a pre-Skull Weaving holding the Cosmic Cube that's been circulating the net? http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=73105
-
They actually followed the comic! What a novel concept in an industry so rife with the ignorance of "improving" something classic. Bravo Captain America design team.

The MASK returns! I can't wait for the Red Skull to go all Fritz Lang on us
by Centauri
-
Fuck him. As if 'first!' is the hardest thing to deal with on this site. Anyways, yeah. The Red Skull.
-
What's he's holding is the Cosmic Cube. It's no MacGuffin and has been a part of Marvel lore for as long as I have been aware of comics. Look it it. The All-Spark from Transformers wants to grow up to be the Cosmic Cube. As long as they somehow manage to have Arnim Zola as as a set of legs with a monitor for a torso, I'm there. Who are I kidding. It's fraggin' Captain America. Nothing short of a total cluster-frak will keep me away.
-
...because his first posts are links to his social media outlets.
-
Perfection. Can't wait to see him on the silver screen.
-
could be cool though.
-
he actually cares about talkback on his site. it shows he takes time to read our comments and reply to them, he gets the ball rolling so to speak. Keep it up Harry, we appreciate your comments! P.S Red Skull looks cool in those pics!
-
Thanks for the info, I looked it up. I'm hoping they stayed away from that in Captain America movie, it'll just seem too close to the recent Transformers movies if they're after some all-powerful cube, regardless of which came first.
-
Yes, it's goofy but there's a charm to it. And that sequence where Cap fights the Red Skull just before being tied to the rocket is great in an 80’s action TV series sorta way.
-
I gotta look up the back story on this one. I've heard of him, but don't have any idea what his deal is. Hopefully it won't take the entire movie for him to get and red and skully.
-
Face is obviously looking very good. Here's hoping this movie turns out as awesome as it seems so far. Hugo Weaving has to bring something special to this, which should be easy for him. Don't want to want to think of Agent Smith or past characters he's played while I am watching the movie. Same goes for Chris Evans btw, don't want to even think of FF. One note, kind of wish he just had the simple green jumpsuit from the comics. For me, the materials and the patterns look a bit too slick and modern on the Red Skull's and Cap's costumes. Anxiously waiting to see how it registers on the big screen.
-
The Red Skull creates Hydra as an offshoot of the Nazis for his own world conquest agenda. By making Hydra advanced beyond anything that actually existed, it creates a villain that only Cap can respond to and defeat. Hate to drop the spoilers on you, but we didn't need Cap to win WWII, so the stakes of the clash would have to be considerably less if they went with the Nazis alone. It *is* PC, to the degree that it's kind of a dick move to tell the people who actually fought and died to defeat the Nazis that some fictional guy in a blue suit was more instrumental to bringing Hitler down. People freaked the fuck out when U-571 dared to depict a fictional American mission to retrieve an enigma machine, although Inglorious Basterds seemed to meet with much less criticism for completely rewriting history. Mostly though, this creates a villain group that can follow Cap back to the modern day for sequels. I don't think modern Nazis ever really recovered from "The Blues Brothers". Johnston has described in interviews scenes with the Nazis trying to claim the cube for Hitler from the Red Skull. It's not ignoring that Nazis were around... just setting up its own original threat.
-
red skull had red hands? his red hands dont look very boney to me.
-
God damn... the fan dickheads will never, ever be pleased. FFS. This looks awesome. I would piss on my bed if I wanted a wet blanket.
-
Or deformed in an accident? I always thought it was mask...
-
"he actually cares about talkback on his site. it shows he takes time to read our comments and reply to them, he gets the ball rolling so to speak." No he doesn't. He posts repetitive drivel to be the FIRST in every talkback. Look at the obit for the KRULL director. He just writes "Harry writes the obit for Peter Yates" or some nonsense like that. Posting a FIRST that's just a recap of the same story we just read does NOT prove he cares about the talkbacks on this site. Fixing the talkbacks and actually engaging in them shows he takes time to read our comments and reply to them. Because FIRSTing is a reply to no one but himself.
-
Is a 2 year old designing this film..? Those illustrations are just pure amateur!
-
Yep, for all it's flaws, the Matt Salinger Captain America is still great fun. And yes, that fight, as short as it is, is freaking awesome. At least they stayed true to the Cap's comic book look. I love that movie even if it is mostly crap.
-
That's funny. I'm still laughing about that. "I hate Illinois Nazis..."
-
I'd say one of the more obvious reasons is that the marketing department probably had qualms with making an action figure with a swastika on it. The Hydra symbol simplifies that.
-
too similar for mainstream audiences, and kindof me too.
-
...is a way to keep all the rest of you homo's from writing"First!" like you're all original or something. THANK YOU HARRY!! As for the Skull, looks great except for the Hydra which he had nothing to do with and it better be a mask and not be a "Hugo Weaving face" be the mask dealio. That would be Ghey.

s it obvious to everyone that Black Widow is going to betray Shield?

Hugo Weaving as Johann Schmidt!!! Baron Strucker going to be in this?
-
your face is annoying

“The power within the Cube allows whoever wields it to literally reshape reality around him. Virtually anything is possible, from the raising of mountains and commending the power of the elements to opening dimensional portals and transforming your enemies.” An army which carries the cube before it, is invincible.

thats all i see is agent smith in a red mask.

Where... the fuck... are my NAZIS?!! Goddamn it, Hollywood.

..to the roster of characters in marvel vs capcom 3. but then again, he'll be easily overshadowed by dorammu, super skrull and wesker.

-
http://tinyurl.com/39sx7p8 Best red skull design i ever saw. He'd give the kids nightmares, a truly scary looking villian for once...
-
Have him in a secret ceremony which is also attended by his inner circle associates and where they appoint RS who uses a blood oath, as the official successor of Hitler who will secretly continue to fight for the 3rd Reich's vision using all its assets, technology and money through the secret Hydra organization, in case Germany loses WW2 and Hitler is killed. then have him go and see a captured Cap because he wants to see in person this new super weapon of the allies. and gives him a short speech about how the world needs someone like him (Hitler) to save it otherwise it's doomed to its self-destruction and that even if he loses the war,his dream will never die but will be embraced by thousands of new followers around the world in the upcoming years and that it will eventually be fulfilled through his secret Hydra organization. Cap swears to him that as long as he is alive he will fight Nazism and all the bad guys who are monsters like Hitler. the end. anyway you gotta have to have Hitler somewhere there.it was cool in Raiders, funny in Basterds.so do it.
-
I consider myself a fan of superheroes but never really read comics or followed Captain America...the actor playing him looks really young to me, and I'm wondering if people think he's too young and that they should have cast someone in their 30's or early 40's. Thoughts?
-
It's a lot cheaper than braces.
-
Jan. 10, 2011, 7:01 p.m. CST
my liege , I disagree, those figures are not up to the same standards.
by Stereotypical Evil Archer
I'm talking detail, articulation, articulation stiff enough to hold poses, lots of accessories. I find that line to be very loose, awkwardly articulated, and the detail is tacky. I have some Iron Mans, Gray Hulk, Juggernaut, and Thor. They don't stand up (pun intended) to the Star Wars and G.I. Joe lines.
-
Steve Rogers was a young man trying to enlist in the army to fight in WW2, but as the proverbial 98 pd. weakling, he's 4F. That's why they select him for the super soldier program. So if anything, Chris Evans is a bit old at 30 to play an 18 year old wannabe army private.
-
before bodybuilding was even a sport.
-
It looks like his V FOR VENDETTA character as he emerged from the fire. Been there done that!
-
Actually, it looks fine. I just thought that this TB was way too positive.
-
Think he should be a Nazi, though.
-
That's got to be one of the funniest comments I've read in awhile.
-
Looks like Hollywood wimping out on the swastika thing again, to appease the Euro censors.
-
...leaks and AICN doesn't even mention it ?????
-
Hence New York rather than Gotham, etc. It does seem like they are taking the easy way out by excuding the Nazi's. I always figured that since Skull and Baron Strucker just built Hydra from the ashes of the third reich after WWII. But whatever, I'm just as psyched for this as I was for the last Captain America movie. Hope this one actually makes it to the theatre!
-
or shiny or something negative for negative sake. Actually it looks A-Number-1.
-
Shut up.
-
Thanks, that helps.

Sweet! Now we can have an idea of what he looks like in the comic book!
by IceTitan
Oh wait..
-
C'mon use your fuckin' brain. They WILL have Nazis in the movie but you can't cross market the MAIN villain of the movie to media and merchandising, especially tie-ins to child related products, if he's adorned with one of the most hated symbols in the history of mankind.
-
red skull + nazi + kinky ftw.
-
by that I mean underutilize a coo' actor with a great role by not executing a potentially great combination of actor and role.
-
Is a mask. He's not scared underneath either.
-
I wonder if they got Hugo Boss to design it, that would be all kinds of ironic! (Hugo Boss designed Nazi uniforms, hence they were the best dressed evil bastards in history)
-
C'mon, guys...an art dept. release is NOT news, for christfuckingsakes! Lots of shit looks good in artistic rendering and then falls apart on screen (like the awful Superman Costume in SUPERMAN RETURNS).</p> <p> Call me when there's an actual photo of Hugo Weaving in Red Skull makeup.</p> <p> donlogan...your photo was wicked...thanks for the nightmares, dude!
-
Let's hope that the movie shows Hydra pulling the strings of the Nazis. Remember, they (the Nazis) started out as a simple political party that then went rampantly fascist and genocidal.
-
So we're getting Cap's origin, the Red skull's origin, the cosmic cube, his "demise", a modern day awakening PLUS the kitchen sink all in a 90 minute movie? Fantastic Four anyone?
-

The HYDRA starts as a special department of the Nazis, that's why it has its own logo
by RedLeaderStandingBy
Just like the SS.
-
Historically, the script it's pretty accurate.
-
I have a feeling that everything this could have been will be toned down to the max because of selling toys. I'd be ok if Red Skull has a swastika armband until he gets appointed as successor to Hitler and Hydra is installed (and then armband changed). Once Hitler is dead, Skull could go back to the swastika or keep the Hydra band as a sign of a new, better Nazi regime. I just hope Bucky gets his arm blown off at the end.
-
Cap/Steve Rogers, like most of the men who fought in WW2 was young - early-mid 20's. He wasn't an Army lifer or grizzled veteran who'd signed up before the war - he's a struggling artist/illustrator who's moved by the Pearl Harbor attacks and Nazi aggression to enlist. The Super-Serum made him bigger and better, it didn't age him. Assuming he's 25 in 1941, gets selected for porgram, survives, trains and is active in late 1942 and is blown up and frozen in 1945 - Cap's no older than 29/30. Evans is the right age. Cap's leadership abilities isn't tied to his age - its tied to how he's a kick-ass soldier and American.
-
For years and years, Marvel had a rule that the only characters who can't come back from the dead are Uncle Ben, Gwen Stacey, and Bucky. Screw that Winter Soldier retcon nonsense. Bucky's death is one of the main motivating factors for Captain America's continued fight against evil. Having him somehow live would only invalidate his sacrifice.
-
The man most responsible for the creation of Hydra was Baron Wolfgang von Strucker, the Prussian aristocrat who served as wing commander of Nazi Germany’s infamous Death’s Head Squadron, and later as leader of its Blitzkrieg Squad of commandos. Infuriated by Strucker’s defeats by American commando Sgt. Nicholas Fury, and by Strucker’s refusal to execute the entire population of a French village, Adolf Hitler ordered the Gestapo to find and assassinate him. Strucker escaped Germany with the help of some of its men, and more importantly, with that of the Third Reich’s second most powerful leader, the Red Skull. The Skull eventually intended to challenge Hitler himself, and assigned Strucker to build a power base for him in the Far East. The embittered Strucker had no intention of serving anyone but himself, however, and severed ties with the Skull on becoming the Supreme Hydra. On arriving in Japan, Strucker made contact with Japanese subversives who informed him that they were forming a secret society bent on world conquest. Strucker rapidly became the mastermind behind this society’s rise to power. He planned and led raids on major war plants and military equipment storehouses throughout the world. Although the Hydra uniforms bear something of an oriental look, Hydra’s organization along fascist lines attests to Strucker’s role in shaping the society. Hydra’s very name is the clear mark of a Westerner, and its salute, “Hail Hydra!” is an obvious variation on “Heil Hitler!” Upon building Hydra’s army and arsenal to what he judged to be a maximum strength, Strucker eliminated the original Supreme Hydra, who was Japanese, and became Supreme Hydra himself.

i hope captain america kills hitler-rothschild in the flick!
by shogunshin
man i hate the nazi-rothschild regime, cause im sick of rothschild rule. i sure hope captain america smacks the shit out of hitler-rothschild during the course of the movie, like in inglorious bastards! rewrite history, like the rothshcilds do, and have hitler die! captain america should find hitler's grandpappy rothschild, and smack him too! ha.
-
The one with Salingers's kid. Hope they reprint it with the new Cap movie on the way.
-
or movies for that matter... The Red Skull is an old old comic book character from the 40's. Captain America comic books are that old. And the theme of many of those comic books revolved around fighting the Nazis and Cap beating up Hitler. One of the main super villains was called "the Red Skull". So, this is not a new concept. This is a recreation of an old concept. BTW I love the make up! It really does look like the Red Skull!! :D I wonder if the Red Skull story and Cosmic Cube ties in at all with the Avengers storyline or the Infinity Gauntlet.
-
That would be really badass.
-
who is always drawn. Look! It's Red Skull! His skull! It's RED!
-
Someone call Joel Schumacher to fix this.
-
Cap's looks like crap.
