um... JURASSIC PARK 4 is shooting at Universal?

Published at: Jan. 9, 2011, 9:33 p.m. CST

Hey folks, Harry here...  and this is just... damn odd.   Over at "BehindTheThrills.Com" they have a very curious photo of the Universal Studios - Production Board on the 'lot' - which clearly states that JURASSIC PARK 4 is shooting on Stages 7, 10, 12 & 14.   As the scooper that sent me the link below states...   We all thought that Joe Johnston was directing JURASSIC PARK 4 after he finished CAPTAIN AMERICA.

Now, it is possible that he's been supervising and working on JURASSIC PARK 4 - and they're in the earliest stages of building sets for the film production - OR - perhaps these are stages shooting an initial teaser trailer that'll come out later this year.   Of course 4 full stages at Universal seems like overkill...   OR - a joker wrote it on the Chalk Board to fuck with folks.   So...  Who knows.   But we're looking into it...  UNIVERSAL is denying the existence of JURASSIC PARK 4 - so this brings in the issue of JOKE or PHOTOSHOP or the publicists being unaware of the chalkboard, which obviously knows all.

Hey Harry,
Long time reader and fan of the site. Just got word and pictures today of filming happening at Universal Studios Hollywood on JP 4. I thought Joe Johnston was directing after Captain America?
Here's the link.

    Jurassic Park 4?

    by HEADGEEK

Is JURASSIC PARK 4 gearing up over at Universal? Looks like it!

  • Jan. 9, 2011, 9:38 p.m. CST

I'll believe it when I see it, Harry.

    by Kamaji

There's been so much speculation on JP4 for so long, that it's hard to take it seriously now. Though at this point, wouldn't it be like flogging a dead horse? So much of the awe of seeing full-motion dinosaurs is gone.

    Ugh

    by KinjoAlcoholicNinja

Please no....Jurassic Park was the first grown-up book I ever read way back when I was a kid. Let it rest so we can pretend the 3rd movie (and most of the second) never existed....like we do with the Matrix.

    Jurassic Park III was hideous

    by Nasty In The Pasty

I'm baffled why so many people consider it better than The Lost World, which was certainly mediocre, but at least had some great setpieces and images (the raptor tails in the tall grass moving in on the humans from all sides in particular) along the way. JPIII had that inexcusably stupid moment (one of many to choose from) where the characters break into a vending machine and help themselves to the snack treats inside...a vending machine that has been ROTTING IN A SWELTERING JUNGLE FOR FIVE+ YEARS. I don't care *how* many preservatives they injected into those Cheetos...that shit would have been TOTALLY INEDIBLE.

There's a host of updates happening, but you have to understand the priority list. The big chunk of our tech time right now is spent load balancing and modifying a shit load of problems that cause blank pages to appear too often. SO. Meanwhile - at the same time, every one of your 'problems' is on the docket - and I'm told a bunch will cease to be problems by this time next week. But we'll see. No, it isn't too expensive, it's all about a series of priorities. The most important of which is to make sure the site can handle the traffic we get, which is not an easy thing. Especially when you're starting with a site that was MONTHS away from us wanting to launch it. Just wait till you see what we have in store in the coming months. So cool.

perfect example of "do we really even NEED this?" movie

    by TheSeeker7

I mean think about it. You had the original, based on a best selling novel, one of the defining movies of the 90's, in multiple ways. Yes, the sequel was partly cash-grab, but it did also have some redeeming qualities that still makes it a worthy own in your DVD collection. And Part III, well it was... it was fairly 'meh' at best, and frankly already was at the point of the "did we really need this?" So now, like what almost 10 years later from THAT (nevermind the original) the world's really clamoring for another visit to the PJ world? It's not like the CD dinos didn't already look mindblowing before. This is just like the epitome of an unnecessary sequel. C'mon already, enough.

whoops (so much for that wanted edit button)

You can see CGI dinos in toothpaste commercials these days

    by Nasty In The Pasty

Remember how MINDBLOWING it was to see Jurassic Park in '93 and see fluid, full-motion CG dinosaurs after decades of rubber suits and jerky stop-motion? Nowadays, that kind of F/X work is as common as pigeons, so continuing the JP franchise after the technology has become old-hat is stupid. It's like Jeff Goldblum said in the first movie, "Your scientists were so preoccupied if they COULD that they didn't stop to think if they SHOULD!".

    by locke815

I mean, aren't you the same losers who demand that the Transformers look "boxy" and that Kirsten Dunst was too snaggle-toothed to play a model, but a movie about dinosaurs must be killed in its infancy? The sad thing is that every Jurassic Park hater here would see JP4 on opening weekend, even if it were as bad as Indy 4 or Episode 1.

    "Jurassic World"

    by MattmanReturns

Anyone else remember rumors about a sequel called "Jurassic World" which took place decades later, after dinos had retaken the planet? Humans lived in the wreckage of cities hiding from the dinosaurs and looking for a way to wipe them out. That was an interesting idea. If they do another Jurassic sequel, it needs to be something more than just another island escape movie.

    That Transformers comment is spot-on

    by Lone Fox

JP1 was mediocre beyond the wow factor, which let's face it, wore off a long time ago. The acting throughout the film was terrible (you can practically hear Spielberg directing Laura Dern- "Drop jaw! Big dinosaur ahead!") JP2 was a far superior film, with the exception of the shoe-horned dysfunctional family schtick- thankgod! Goldblum's estranged daughter is a gymnast! The movie was a rollercoaster though, bigger, faster, and a lot more dinosaurs. JP3 was laughable. A rehash of 1 & 2, but with more annoying actors. An embarassment. Having dinosaurs on screen isn't enough anymore. DO something with the story!

and it's not true. there's not much filming happening at Universal now except Desperate Housewives and Parenthood (and two Top Secret movies involving puppets and a certain webhead), so someone added JP4 to the production board to get the guests excited to take the studio tour. it happens every once in a while when things get slow (in fact, i've seen JP4 on that board a couple of times over the years). my friend has access to the Universal production schedule and there's no mention of JP4 by name or by code name (which my friend would know). it's just Universal having some fun at the guests (and Internets) expense.

JP3 works better for a lot of folks than JP2....

    by daglesj

.....because simply it isnt such a mess as JP2. JP2 look like a movie that had 20+ minutes cut out of it at important points. Sure JP2 has some good set pieces but the film has way too many plotholes in it. The main one is halfway in. Just what exactly happend on the cargo ship? What ate the crew? The Trex? Then it just climbed back in the hold? A big chunk is missing there. Glaring. A mess. But thats what happens when you direct a major movie by video link on a 10" screen from a different country. JP3 just works as a more cohesive average Hollywood flick.

Granted, that's pretty faint praise. JP 2 is arguably The Beard's worst film. JP 3 completely dispensed with the sense of wonder and amazement that characterized the first film and pretty much made a big monster movie. Sure, it wasn't very good, but at least it didn't have any pretenses. JP1 and 2...

    by NightArrows

People who shit on JP1 can eat a bag of dicks. Experiencing that film for the first time in the 90's and seeing fucking DINOSAURS walking around was fucking awesome. Previously all we had was shit like 'Baby' with those rubber piles of ass. JP1 is in no way like any of the trash Michael "dead hookers and blow" Bay shits out. Was JP1 a great "film"?? No. But we got to watch a fucking T-Rex tear it up and THAT alone was worth the price of admission. Jurassic Park 2 was, ummm, yeah. Goldblume's black daughter was fucking AWFUL. The whole gymnastics routine with her kicking the raptor was one of the stupidest scenes ever committed to film. HOWEVER...the film did have a T-Rex ripping up a suburban neighborhood, and THAT was a childhood dream come to fruition on screen for me.

  • Jan. 10, 2011, 8:35 a.m. CST

    JP1 far superior

    by Tomarru

JP1 is just so well paced, has such a wide range of character types and the set pieces are delivered note perfect at exactly the right time. I've watched it on tv a few times over christmas and it's just as awesome as it was in 93, I don't see the criticism of the kids either, they're at least somewhat functional and don't particularly get in the way of anything. JP2 on the other hand just leaves me feeling numb, it has none of the magic, none of the tension and every character is completely one dimensional. None of the set pieces every did anything for me, the "cattle drive" at the start is just messy and is so one sided in favour of the humans that you just dont care. The attack on the trailer by the 2 rexes is just messy aswell, T-rexes come, T-rexes go, T-rexes come back again and the peril in the falling trailer is non existant cause all the characters are cunts and u know theyre gonna survive anyway. It also suffers for being far too long, they capture the T-rex and get off the island...that should be the end. But no the movie has to go full retard and let the Rex loose on the mainland which looks awesome but just serves no purpose in the narritive of the movie and conjures so many plot holes. It's also a movie where the family dynamic has been so badly shoe horned in with an attrocious child actress and as poor a scipt as possible that it makes you root for the dinosaurs more than anything. Essentially, it plays out and hits as many bum notes as TF2. JP3 at least has a couple of likeable characters, the set pieces work a bit more and it's a hell of a lot shorter. It isn't under any illusions as to what movie it wants to be, its a straight up monster movie, full of cliches and the odd retarded character that drags it down but nowhere near the depths of the 2nd movie.

What in the fuck did you want them to do at the end? Fight the dinos UFC style? I believe the "pinnacle" of the excitement in the film was a fucking Velociraptor escape, followed by a T-Rex taking on the Velociraptors.

at least with JP2 they did something with the T-Rex right? like, i dunno, in the Jaws where the hero did do something instead of packing up and moving with his family to live in a mountain and let the shark take on a whale or something.yep.

Soooo, it'll be on a third undiscovered island?

    by SithMenace

I would like to see the dinosaurs get loose on a populated tropical island, like Hawaii or Costa Rica. Basically the last 20 minutes of The Lost World fleshed out to a full movie, but still with the tropical island locale. <p>Although story wise I don't know how they would justify a third park being given the go ahead after the first two disasters, especially in a populated area. I just think it would be cool to see dinosaurs eating tourists. Imagine a bunch of T-Rex's running down packed Hawaiian beaches as sunbathers panic, run and get eaten, or Raptors hunting in downtown Honolulu. Good stuff.

Jurassic Park 4 will happen... in 3-D!!!

    by Johnno

They're not gonna miss out on the opportunity to have the audience see T-Rex come at them and try to eat them in 3-D... this will be a hit based solely on that reasoning, which is that kids love dinosaurs and 3-D and theme parks, and this will have all 3 of them available. D-box will also make a killing off of this.

Christ, what did u want em to do at the end of JP1? grab shotguns and run around the island exterminating everything they could? The only thing they could ever hope to do was escape with their lives, they were far outnumbered and taking on the rex with shotguns would probably only piss it off. Also, they did something with the rex in JP2? like what? put it in a boat then all die? put it in a boat and return it back to the island? What about the raptors etc they left alive? in essence didnt all they REALLY do amount to escaping in a helicopter?

    by Tassium

...Rather than yet another high concept dino-scare. Close Encounters.. was not about aliens, and in fact neither was ET. Great human stories is what they were. JP3 gave it a go but failed because who could believe William H Macy/Tea Leoni were even related never mind previously married? And the find their lost boy plot was lame. As was the actor playing him, written "old" for some reason.

    Jurassic Park was perfectly paced

    by MattmanReturns

Perfect amount of exposition and buildup. Spielberg made you afraid of those raptors long before you even saw them. Every action scene is expertly choreographed. The kitchen scene is brilliant. That final shot of the T-Rex after she kills the raptors still gives me chills. And even the quieter moments are well done... such as Hammond describing his flea circus, Malcolm at the dinner table, and Nedry stealing the embryo. Where's the blu-ray?

They should make a JP4 where everything goes right. Like, they clone some dinosaurs, put them in a theme park, opens it to the public and it's a tremendous success. It should be a nice feel-good movie about the awe and wonder of dinosaurs. Or y'know, we can have a 4th outing of running around.

  • Right now we have a great script (both steven and I belive this is the best script since the first film) and we are doing tons of pre-production work including lots of research and scouting locations. But No filming or even any casting has been done, we plan to start filming in late june early july and Universal has tentiveley set us in for an august 2012 release date I know it took almost a decade but jurassic park will be back in a big way next summer. Crichton's Novels into Mini-series

    by ENAN

I definitely love the idea of having the first two novels, which were considerably altered in the films, faithfully done as a HBO or Showtime mini-series. Holy cow, there is so much, especially in The Lost World, that goes untapped. The chameleon dinosaurs, the sonic weapon Datsun uses when collecting eggs across the island, no inexplicably black daughter for Malcolm. Then there is the adolescent T-Rex stuff from the first one, and much more formidably sized Dilophasauruses, and more Ed Harding! I guess Terra Nova has hope to be the dinosaur show I dream of, but I really like the ethical and consumer concerns Jurassic Park particularly deal with. Going back in time to deal with dinosaurs isn't the same, or as rich, as introducing them to our time.

Anyone who dumps on JP1 can eat a bag of floppy dicks. Yes, it's a popcorn movie, but it's a popcorn movie done RIGHT. And the reveal of that first dinosaur, the Brachiosaur, is one of those "it" moments for me in film. Few things have given me the chills in film like it did all those years ago. kilik wants it re-shot to show Sam Neil loading up on weapons and taking out the Rex single-handedly while the kids feed his ammo belt. I think kilik is Greek for "Michael Bay Jr."

    Hammond

    by ENAN

I could see them going the prequel route, and dealing with Hammond's early career and making his first batches, trying deal with the animals for the first time. There were a lot more deaths on the island before that opening shot in JP 1. Plus, it could even take place on Isla Sorna since that is where they manufactured the dinos. Adventureland meets Splice.

Get that put through the proper channels and onto a website officially and we might believe it. But in a talkback with no way to verify who you are...not gonna work. I'm lookin forward to a 4th movie, it's had time to gestate and provided they nail down a good script that avoids the pitfalls of the past 2 movies it should be great. Another thing they need to do is find the right actors, there has been so much miscasting in the series with the likes of vaughn and the 2 parents. Actors with as much gravitas and ability as a goldfish reading a script designed to create the most obnoxious vile unbelievable characters imaginable. No more kids, no crappy family dynamic shoehorned in, no characters that are thick as shit shouting and attracting attention all the time for no reason.

    I saw JP1 six times.

    by blackwood

I was twelve or thirteen. I had read the book and was completely jazzed about it. There was a preview screening the Thursday before it opened and my parents decided to take me to it. Theatre pretty empty, not many people know. I had never, and have never since, seen anything in the theatre that scared me on as deep a level as that T-Rex attack on the cars. It just felt so immediate and real and I believed, completely, that those kids were going to die. The whole film was such a ride. I loved it more than anything else ever. The next time I saw it, theatre was packed, I was with a friend and there was a row of college students behind us. They cut up the whole thing, snarking and trashing it at every turn... but they still screamed at all the screamy bits. I resented them so much. Couldn't they see how awesome it was? Dinosaurs! Fucking dinosaurs! But no, it was silly, and stupid, and unrealistic, and he wouldn't do that, and she wouldn't do that, and oh my god this is retarded, and AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH RAPTORS! but they don't look real, god, what a waste of time. Laughing at themselves for being taken in when they were. I have never felt for a movie how I felt for the original JP. A lot of it has to do with time, where I was in my life -- that precious window where I could still believe in things and be taken away.

Just figured out who you are....or are meant to be. Fair enough if what you say is true, but would still like to see it up officially before i start believing it's happening. Wish Spielberg would come back to direct and put his full effort in. He's been wasted producing stuff and rushing projects / doing too much at the same time. JP4 could really use the masters touch if he can find it again and proper financial backing to complete any script rather than cutting huge chunks out of it.

    by NightArrows

The ending of JP1 was what it needed to be. They barely escaped with their lives. No need for another chase or another action piece. They needed to get the fuck off the island and they DID. Having the T-Rex chase them to the helipad? REALLY? Good lord, talk about a contradictory post. Raiders ended on a down note. Based on the above logic, the Ark ghosts should have chased Indy and Marion all the way back to the U.S. I mean, all they did at the end was nail a crate closed. Talk about lack of wonder and danger...And yes, War of the Worlds ends abruptly, but so does the book (if I recall correctly, it's been a few years since I last read it), it fit the tone.

The ending of JP is anything but "dull"

    by MattmanReturns

You're the first person I've ever heard say that, in fact. Not sure what more you wanted? Not enough explosions? I don't get it. It was paced very similar to Jaws, in fact. Jurassic Park is anything but "dull". That's just a baffling criticism. The kitchen scene, the raptor's stalking the heroes... how on earth could you call that dull? As for escalating tension and danger... I was on the edge of my seat from the moment the Rex breaks out until the moment she saves the day at the conclusion. As far as popcorn movies go, it does not get any better than Jurassic Park.

with Cruise's relatives all being alive and well... that was too dark a story to end so brightly. Don't agree with you on Jurassic Park though. I don't think it ends abruptly (nor have I heard that complaint from anyone else)... it comes to its natural conclusion. The finale with the Rex tops everything else in the film, imo. It's a perfect climax... a final knockout punch. And I loved Grant looking at the flying birds in a new light. I can't imagine the film going on any longer without outstaying its welcome or becoming redundant.

No human emotion? Coming from the guy who prefers The Lost World?

    by MattmanReturns

I cared about the kids. I cared about Grant and Ellie. They weren't the strongest characters ever, but they felt like real people thrown into a terrifying situation and were therefore very easy to sympathize with and root for. They were likable and I wanted them to survive. I can say the same of the three men in Jaws. Can't say the same of The Lost World. Malcolm lost all his personality. His kid was annoying. Vince Vaughn was a dick. The morals were clouded: "You can't kill a T-Rex, that's bad!" But it's okay for the T-Rex to kill a bunch of faceless scientists? Who the fuck are we rooting for in that movie? And the Roland and Vince Vaughn characters vanish before the final act of the fucking movie.

    jdanielp wants Tyrannosaurus-vs-Triceratops?

    by jinste

Then, sir,i would suggest you watch the 60's Ray Harryhausen classic One Million Years BC,and you will see exactly that.In fact Ive noticed most of the folk posting opinions here never seem to mention any older movies, its all"JP1 pissed on JP2 which pissed on JP3"etc.While I realise you all have quite strong opinions on the Jurassic Park series,I think some of the younger ones among you are perhaps unaware that dino movies didnt start in 93.If you see interviews with Spielberg and many of the effects people that worked on the JP movies, they all acknowledge a huge debt to the great Ray Harryhausen. They all saw his movies when they were kids, and were stunned by what they saw in the 50's and 60's. If you like dinosaur movies I would recommend you see the aforementioned One Million Years BC.Yes,the FX arent as good as nowadays, and also the cavemen just talk in grunts and screeches. But theres some cracking dinosaur action, with big badass dinos fighting each other.Even better is my personal fave-The Valley of Gwangi.I saw this at my local(and sadly long gone)cinema in 1969 at the age of 10,and i was blown away by it.Even now, when I watch it on dvd,Im stunned at how good it is.Jeez-dinosaurs-vs-dinosaurs,dinosaurs-vs-cowboys,dinosaur-vs-elephant,dinosaur getting loose and eating people!Does it get any better?!!The climax in the cathedral is amazing-a spectacular end to a terrific movie. Then theres one of Harryhausens 50's efforts-The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms.Yes,its in black and white-but dont let that put you off.The giant dinosaur is good, seriously bad assed, killing and eating anybody who gets in its way. Also of possible interest is The 7th voyage of Sinbad, which features a giant dragon-not technically a dinosaur,i know-fighting a monstrous cyclops. Another much-underrated classic is When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth,a 1970 movie where the FX were done by Jim Danforth.Plenty dinos in this one too, although its another set in prehistoric times, with cavedwellers talking in gibberish. The stop-motion animation is terrific though. Finally, dino fans of a younger age should check out the daddy of them all-the original King Kong.Yes its ancient, yes the FX are creaky, but if it wasnt for this awesome classic, the Jurassic Park movies would never have existed. There is just SO much to enjoy here-the stegosaur is cool, the brontosaur that capsizes the raft is a bad mother, the Kong-vs-Pterodactyl is great, but the scene that blows you away is Kong-vs-Allosaurus,Boy,is that how to do a monster battle or what?Amazing stuff.Theres also a couple of dinos in the lacklustre sequel Son of Kong, but nothing really worth seeing. So-plenty for you youngsters(and some of you not-so-youngsters as well)to check out.All these movies are available cheaply from places like Amazon.Or you could-ahem-download them.Your call.But-ENJOY!

Spielberg killing a children onscreen? He could do that in 1975, back when he was single and not a father. Today, impossible.

For Jur. Park 4, i bet they will use those huge dinosaurs...

    by AsimovLives

... that were recently found by paleontologists. They have found even bigger dinosaurs then the ones depicted even in JP3, including predators bigger then the T-Rex. And least we forget, many paleontologists now believe that most if not all dinosaurs were covered in feathers, specially dinos like the T-Rex. Yeah, T-Rex was covered in (most certainly very coloured) feathers and looked like a giant turkey. I'd love to see an Holywood blockbuster having the balls to actually make a realistic depiction of the dinosaurs as they were, and stop showing them as big lizards wiht lizard skins but instead with the more realistic feathered covering they most certainly had. Feathered dinosaurs, think about it.

I understand, buddy. Thanks for keeping me in mind for when you can get it online. At this point, I'd be just happy to read the first page of the script.

Thanks for keeping me in mind! Read Jurassic Park in 5th grade and it rapidly consumed my life. When I heard about the script for the 4th film it sounded so insane. I've been dying to read it for years. If you do get a chance to scan it one day please don't forget about carnotaur3 and myself. We'd be in your debt. Anyone every play Dino Crisis 3? Now that would make an interesting (notice I didn't say good) Jurassic Park movie. Dinos in space!
