Theatrical Trailer For Pegg/Frost/Mottola Alien Road Comedy PAUL Uncloaks!
Beaks here...
If there was a slight disappointment at last December's wholly wonderful Butt-Numb-A-Thon, it's that the appearance of a certain Universal publicist didn't translate into an surprise screening of the Simon Pegg/Nick Frost/Greg Mottola sci-fi road comedy PAUL. One of my friends who's seen the movie assured me it would play brilliantly if programmed in the KICK-ASS slot (i.e. the penultimate film of the twenty-four hour festival). But it was not to be.
Watching the new theatrical trailer that just premiered at Apple's trailer site, I can certainly see the potential. It's got the zany/heartfelt tone of SHAUN OF THE DEAD and HOT FUZZ, which is obviously a good thing. The trailer plays a bit broadly, but that's just to hook the folks who aren't pre-sold on a Pegg & Frost road movie. People I respect really dug the screenplay, and I can't think of a better director to tackle whimsical material like this than Mottola, who's an impressive three-for-three thus far in his career (with THE DAYTRIPPERS, SUPERBAD and ADVENTURELAND). Don't mean to be pushy, but I'd like to see this now, Universal.
PAUL opens theatrically March 18th. Between this and YOUR HIGHNESS, Universal is looking at a terrific spring.

Love Pegg and Frost, glad to see it has an "R" rating...

...still gonna wait for some real reviews... I mean, Netflix, for sure. $11 at a first run theater? Not so sure.
-
but his voice just doesn't seem to quite fit here. That said I still had a few laughs with the trailer, I'm optimistic on this one.
-
I think Harry's Top Ten films mentions Edgar Wright though, if you're looking for a place to bait people.
-
Edgar Wright isn't involved. But I wouldn't mind if he was.
-
Looks sorta stupid but the fact it's basically Roger from American Dad the movie I'll probably have to see it...at home. That said Pegg/Frost/Mottola all rock serious socks
-
...I get the same vibe.
-
It's been out for a while and I even included it on our article for 'Most Anticipated Movies of 2011' http://tinyurl.com/32wb3ln back on January 1st. Doesn't look that great but for Seth Rogen being involved, not bad.
-
His voice just doesn't fit that character at all. Therefore I'll just rent it instead of seeing it in theaters.
-
...is there a plot point that might why Jason is aiming down the sights of a pistol with no round in the chamber? Just asking. Might be fun. Probably see it. MT
-
the live-action American Dad movie, and decided to put Roger in a buddy-film about two (presumably) English guys going on a road trip to see UFO stuff in the US. I'm there.
-
Except for one bit (the "He'll be OK") scene, he looks far too cute & cheery. He needs to fit the emotion behind the voice - a dim-witted slacker.
-
but i dont think its going to be good. there's one part where paul does something and nobody reacts right away. cause hes all digital.

Totally digging the entire concept, these blokes can do no wrong in my nerdverse.
-
but I forgive them...
-
I think I'm gonna likey.
-
That he looks like your typical grey alien but he IS a slacker. If he had a slacker face, he'd look like a caricature of a human instead of a stereotypical alien.
-
Not a single gag in the trailer was even remotely funny. This doesn't bode well.

I heard it was a real alien. No CGI in this movie.

The Highlander blu-ray is a waste of money.

The Last Starfighter is good though.

i have almost universally liked seth rogan's movies, but this could not be farther from my comical interpretation of alien buddy comedy. this is only based on a generic trailer, but i would have preferred pegg/rogan as the buddies with frost as Paul. I dont know; ill see it, and im pretty sure it will be entertaining.
-
That trailer was deadly unfunny. In fact, so unfunny it should be illegal. Seriously though, trade Seth (I'm so fucking lucky to have a career to pay for my pot because I'm really not that funny) Rogen's voice-over with Seth (I'm so fucking lucky I made that 100 million dollar deal with FOX before people saw The Cleveland Show) MacFarlane imitating Paul Lynde and this could be an origin episode for Roger before he meets Stan. And it still wouldn't be as funny as American Dad...which is not hard to be.
-
and not the good kind.
-
That wasn't even close to well done.
-
That made me laugh out loud. I vote "yes".
-
I think it's often much funnier than Family Guy, as a matter of fact. So sue me.
-
but I usually enjoy his movies... his voice is just irritating and his personality is so unbelievable seeing as he looks like a Caucasian Shrek... in short, someone who looks like him would never talk the way he does to people/women (but I guess thats the point) but he is funny, I just cant stand that voice!
-
Of course, so was Adventureland...the parade of talentless tits in Hollywood continues.
-
that looks remotely entertaining. At first I just held it in mild disdain without much thought given to it's chances of success or failure. And now for some reason I can't fully explain my feelings are starting to turn to outright hate for this film. It looks stupid and insipid on so many levels and doesn't even appear to be a funny take on road movies, buddy movies, sci-fi movies or alien road buddy sci-fi movies. It just looks terrible and I wish for it to fail. Quickly.
