Merrick here...

A few days back, rumors/suspicions were borne out when we learned that a major STAR WARS-related announcement would transpire at CES in Vegas - today.  Details on forthcoming Blu-Rays were a safe bet at the time - other possibilities (a 3D conversion of the theatrical films?)

Sure 'nuff, Dart Vader and his Stormstroopers just showed up at the Panasonic Booth C9408 to spread the word.

The following will be updated with more information as more comes in, but here's the gist of the matter so far...

THIS just in from our reader Ivo, via iPhone (thank you!)

Just announced from ces starwars blu ray trilogy. Available September 2011 pre order available now. Whole set 140. Or each trilogy 70. 30 hours extra features plus deleted scenes. just a heads up.

    Fuck off, Lucas

    by Dharma4

Seriously, fuck him. I ain't letting no more of my money to go into that fucker's back pocket. First this shit and then re-releasing them in 3-D? Pssh. George Lucas = king of fucking hacks.

  • Jan. 6, 2011, 1:56 p.m. CST

    Only if ...

    by timmer33

The only way Lucas is getting more of my money is if he makes the final three films. (But I may also buy the live action series on DVD if it's any good, LOL.) But Eps 1-6 ... I've spent enough.

  • Jan. 6, 2011, 1:56 p.m. CST

The real question on all of our minds has yet to be addressed..

    by AzulTool

How much cheese does GL create between his folds on a daily basis? Oh yeah, and the whole thing about the original cuts as well...

will the teet ever go dry?

    by bagwanbob

How many more hours of deleted crap is Lucas sitting on. What's in the next set? Security footage of the pizza delivery guy getting a hummer in the parking lot? With a re-edit of that to follow in yet another set for next christmas? Methinks I hear the obligatory mooing of the cash cow. . .

  • Jan. 6, 2011, 1:58 p.m. CST

    Done with Star Wars

    by TheBigDogg

I will still always love what those original movies were (and I'm currently loving Rinzler's Making of ESB book). But the Star Wars I loved is just a memory now. Everything good has just been sucked from them now. If anything, now that the Family Guy ones have been made, I can watch those and get some laughs while not constantly being reminded by the pricking about and slow murder of the classics so the actual movies are pretty redundant.

  • Jan. 6, 2011, 2 p.m. CST

There's, like, space battles and stuff, right?

    by WriteForTheEdit

Because I like movies with spaceships and "Pew! Pew! Pew!" laser fights. And space monsters, too. Those are cool.

  • Jan. 6, 2011, 2:02 p.m. CST

    Spec Edition or original?

    by vicmackey1268

Besides the extra Han Solo bit with him walking around Jabba and the better exploding planets/death star shots I couldn't stand the level of fake that Lucas acheived with the added content....and i speak for everyone when I say young anakin at the end of jedi made me wanna force choke someone. So, will these blurays be back to the awesome original content and ending we all liked better, or will 1080p hayden gay up my bluray player?

  • Jan. 6, 2011, 2:02 p.m. CST

    Seriously, though...

...except, you know, the fans of the original Star Wars trilogy. Before the second trilogy of Special Editions. Those were decent too - I'm not one of those hardcore "original or nothing" people, but some of us really liked the effects from the original trilogy, and HATE HATE HATE the new song in Jabba's palace in the third movie.

No more of my $ to Lucas, ever. Unless...

    by Kremzeek

And I mean it. I know a lot of us nerds love getting on AICN and proclaiming how we won't go see something or won't buy something when it's released. Admittedly, most of this ends up being BS - not that any of us weren't sincere about our boycotting, but when it comes down to it, the nerd in us usually wins out in the end (which is why I own X3... and a few other shameful films). However, I gave away my prequel trilogy awhile ago as I get absolutely no enjoyment from them. Hell, I'm likely to watch Batman & Robin again before I watch one of the prequels again... so why keep them around? My point is: Lucas will get NO MORE MONEY from me. I'm sick of it. Did my childhood get raped? No. But I'm sick, sick, sick of shelling out money over and over again for shit that's mediocre at best (and that's being really generous here). The only Blu-ray product that would get my money would be the OT - and the "O" in that very well known acronym is ORIGINAL. Which means I don't want this retconned, "fixed' CRAP. I used to defend the SE's, but I just can't anymore. He should've just let well enough alone. Hey, George, OT on Blu and I'm in. Other than that... go F yourself, pal.

  • Jan. 6, 2011, 2:19 p.m. CST

Just fix Boba Fett's voice and I'll buy these fuckers.

    by Onin Solstice

I was patient with the CGI in the classic trilogy, I thought it did enhance the overall atmosphere of places like Mos Eisley and Bespin. But then ol' George pushed me too far. Making Boba Fett a New Zealander? Hell. To the No.

  • Jan. 6, 2011, 2:20 p.m. CST

If the musical number is still in ROTJ

    by SithMenace

I'm not gonna buy this. That is the single most offensive thing Lucas has ever done, even worse then ruining Vader at the end of Sith.

    Hold on...

    by FloristGump

'Dart Vader and his Stormstroopers' Did your spell-checker die over the holidays? Do you type Hans Solo and Princess Liea as well? i think it's great news, this and the extended LOTR are the must-have's for the format, so bring it on!

  • Jan. 6, 2011, 2:21 p.m. CST

    I'll get the whole set

    by MattmanReturns

Episode III will look awesome on Blu. And hopefully they'll clean up Episode I's print... that has always looked like ass.

Please give us the original Unaltered films

    by eric haislar

In HD. Please! I am sure it's not going to happen. And if you are going to give us the altered one. make the following changes. Han Shoots first. No young Anakin, Correct saber colors, remove the lame song in jabba's palace. Also if you want return the nub nub song.

  • Jan. 6, 2011, 2:23 p.m. CST

For those asking re: "The Original Trilogy"

    by Merrick

My understanding is that there will be no release of the "The Original Trilogy" (un-revised, original FX, etc.) on Blu-Ray at this time. "The Special Editions" seem to be what're coming out via these newly announced sets. As far as I know, at least.

  • Jan. 6, 2011, 2:25 p.m. CST

    I'll wait then

    by SithMenace

Shit in Hi-Def is just clearer shit.

  • Jan. 6, 2011, 2:25 p.m. CST

    I'll wait for Adywan's versions

    by HollyW00d

Adywan's cuts will be the best way to watch these anyway. None of this Greedo shoots first CGI enhanced bullshit.

  • Jan. 6, 2011, 2:25 p.m. CST

    Special Edition? No thanks.

    by Heckles

Would probably buy them if it was the original. Lucas can shove the "Special Edition" up his ass.

    Hey Idiots

    by Mr.Stiggs

What is the point of stating "Fuck Lucas...he's not getting my money!". Do you go to the G.E. site and complain when they release a new model of toaster because you already own one? If you don't want to purchase the Star Wars films on Blu-ray then DON'T. No one is holding a gun to your head (other than yourself) and forcing you to add to Lucas' fortune. I just don't understand the "outrage" that some of you profess to harbor over the materialization of Star Wars. It's a film franchise which is aimed at children, despite what many of you believe, and has shrewdly marketed itself to appeal to each new generations of kids. Commercialization, for better or worse, has been part of the original films since day one so stop acting shocked that the trend continues with the release of the films on Blu-ray. Star Wars is one of the oldest film franchises in existence and therefore has been released in different forms as the home video market evolves. It will probably be released again in Super-HD in ten years. Did some of you actually think that Lucas was going to just stop releasing the films once they hit the DVD format? I can just here some of you whine “But I want the ORIGINALS in HD. I want them for FREE. Lucas owes us!”. SHUT UP and stop crying like spoiled children. Either buy them or don't. But don't act like the franchise means nothing to you...it obviously means a great deal or you wouldn't get so riled up about it.

    Hey Stiggs

    by Kremzeek

This a TALKback, right? It's for expressing opinions, whether happy or full of rage. GE doesn't have a talkback section for each of it's products, so it's apples and oranges. Nice try though. And, I can't speak for everyone of course, but I DO care about these films - I care that some of the greatest, most influential films have essentially been ruined *forever* (according to Lucas anyway). And that's exactly why I'm expressing my issues with this release. Hence, bringing us right back to this being a talkback - a place where both you and the rest of us can express open opinions... much like your post. Hmm... =)

  • Jan. 6, 2011, 2:36 p.m. CST

Star Wars talkbacks are always the longest

    by MattmanReturns

With a bunch of people re-emphasizing how much they don't care about Star Wars, and how they'll never give Lucas another dime, blah blah blah. If you really didn't care, you wouldn't care to post. For most of you, Star Wars seems to be the ex-girlfriend you claim to hate, yet never stop talking about.

I get it, I like some of the special editions changes for instance. ESB was great with what was added. I have no problem with it. But some of the stuff in Hope and Jedi is just wrong and Lucas knows it. he is just to stubborn to change them back. Making young Anakin appear at the end of Jedi is just wrong and makes no freaking sense. I mean if he could just find a happy medium between the two everyone would be happier.

    Discontinuing the term "Special Edition"?

    by Dasinfogod

At what point did Luca$Land Inc. discontinue using the 1997 term "Special Edition" for the revised versions of the OT? Official party line now only refers to the Original Trilogy and the Prequel Trilogy. I'm going to guess it was around the time of the 2004 release, since even the so-called "Special Editions" were themselves altered for the DVD release. Heck, even Episode I was altered from the theatrical print in the initial DVD release (not enough, if you ask me!). <b> With the advent of the 3-D "upgrades", no doubt these just-announced Blu-Rays will be officially unrecognized farther down the line by the corporate entity of Luca$. When does it end? When does he squeeze the last fucking drop of blood out of the levitating stone?

    More ships=good

    by Thunderbolt Ross

I don't have a real problem with fixing up the original trilogy. Having more ships in the Star Wars space battle was cool. The "humorous" background nonsense on Tatooine was not. The redundant and silly Jabba scene was not. Also the fact that the boxes remained around starships is lame. Why they couldn't fix that I have no idea. Anyway I'd like to someday show my children the original ones. I don't know why Lucas and company can't just clean them up and not really CHANGE shit. That being said Return of the Jedi's musical number sucked anyway. Yeah the SE version was twice as bad but I can't cry too much about that.

Star Wars version 2.5 is great!

    by Quake II

But I also like version 1.0 as well (no Jabba, Han shoots first). Version 2.0 is decent with the ugly bug-eyed Jabba that looks too skinny but you gotta love version 2.5 with the improved Jabba. But my favorite is the upcoming 2.5 with original puppet Jabba from Jedi and Han doesn't shoot at all! Greedo's blaster actually explodes in his hand and kills him. It's what Lucas always had in mind but in 1977 they couldn't afford the stunt.

If the ORIGINAL films are included...

    by Peter Franks

You know, the ones that actually made George Lucas famous and a mountain of goddamned cash, then mark me down as SOLD. If no, and instead we're getting George's "Special Editions" again, then Lucas can keep his shiny new release. Hey, George, seriously, how about having some respect not for us, the fans, but for THE FILMS? How and why these masterpieces have not been preserved for the ages, cleaned up and restored in beautifully glorious 1080p is simply astonishing. Christ, not only did Alien and Aliens get the proper treatment, Alien 3 and Resurrection...FUCKING ALIEN RESURRECTION...did. Respect your own films, you bloated ass.

    Original versions

    by POST

I'm generally cool with what happened to ANH and ESB, but ROTJ is the one that I really think got abused the most. The new dance number and Hayden at the end just ruin the hell out of that movie. Though the green saber in ANH really pisses me off. I really hope they correct that for the bluray (dont fool yourself, you just KNOW that they have made even MORE changes) With that said, I wont lie like most of you and say "I will never buy these!" I know most of you have already preordered no matter what you say, and I have too.

    complaining

    by vicmackey1268

...i see no reason why people shouldn't complain about some things...star wars was a huge hit everywhere when the original source material came out and some things are what fans of those originals love... now for me, i really dont care if certain special effects were altered or greedo shot first blah blah, what really bugs me is that anyone felt the need to change things. Sure I can see where someone would say "i never liked it and budget didnt allow my verison"...fine, make it better, but dont just change central parts of the original to fit in with a younger crowd. I just got the back to the future trilogy and it is as close to perfect as any box set i could have. The movies were improved visually and with the sound but things didn't change. Old Biff didn't dissapear after returning with the delorian, the original nuclear power plant ending wasnt thrown in anywhere, additional scenes were shown in "deleted scenes" not added as a "spec edition extended cut!"...it was source material and its passed the test of time. Star Wars is one of the only movies that beats B2tF with original fanbase and to see the Bluray versions using an altered form is just sad...in 10 years when my kids watch them I want them to see the films I grew up watching and that will most likely never happen. We get five or six different versions of raunchy comedies, an obscene amount of Avatar releases, a zillion different cuts of Blade Runner, every movie has to have a theatrical, directors, extended, and ultimate edition....and yet fans of the original Star Wars can't get a simple release of basic films....to me that's the real dissapointment.

Talk about dated. They were dated in 2002, now they look slightly above a first generation Sega Saturn game. Remember Dooku on the Speeder? Remember the awful first gen 24 fps Digital camera look that made it appear like a made for Sci-Fi movie. Remember the crap effects in that first chase scene? I mean hey some of the effects in the original cuts of the OT look bad now, but I'll take puppets and matte lines over Star Wars meets Virtua Fighter.

That some people are going to refuse to buy these movies in beautiful high definition just cuz of, what, 2, maybe 3 minutes of "offensive" material added in 1997? re: OT vs. Special Edition OT

    by Darth Thoth

But see, personal preference and nostalgia aside I'm going to argue that there ARE bigger and more socially relevant issues at play here. Lucas represents the alluring/ tempting nature of unregulated capitalism and the insatiable greed of empire. He used to be anti-establishment. Now he IS the establishment. Star Wars used to be about art. Now it's just pimped out to make more and more money. His use of technology employed the best of innovation, artistic creativity, and movie magic. Now, his use of blue/green screen technology is cold and emotionless- just like the Empire. And anyone who disagreed with Lucas or stood in his way was jettisoned like an escape pod (i.e.- Gary Kurz). Furthermore, Lucas is employing revisionist history here, trying to pretend as if the previous versions of these films did not exist. They did! His stance is an assault on film preservation in general and any film enthusiast who respects the medium should be up in arms regardless of which version they prefer. Finally, to reference Julian Assange... if we stand in support of democracy and what he is trying to do with wikileaks, on a fundamental level we are saying that freedom of information should be just that- free, open, and democratized. I have no problem with Lucas making the Special Editions. But just respect the people who lined your pockets in the first place and give us a chance to view whatever version we like instead of trying to systematically control and erase history. Blu-ray technology allows us to view multiple versions of a film. Why not utilize this to respect your fans who want to see the non-special edition films? In short, this non-special edition vs. special edition debate means more than just personal preference or nostalgia. No, at its core it represents Lucas' downfall- an unbelievable parallel to Vader's. Now I believe in redemption and I hope, that like Vader, Lucas will ultimately wake up and eventually do the right thing. But if he decides to be a Darth for the rest of his days then I have no problem telling him to stuff it. Personally, this man and his work has meant so much to me in my life. To see how he has changed is heartbreaking. It really is. I want to love Lucas but he forces dislike. He really does. But you know what? He'll no longer pimp me out. He'll no longer be able to drain my wallet on a whim. Keep the blu-rays if the non-special edition OT is not included. I'll stick with my old VHS's and DVD bootlegs. I'm outta here!

I'm sure nobody has missed the fact that...

    by jimmy rabbitte

...the only way to get the added features is to buy the whole set. It kind of mirrors what his buddy Francis Ford Coppola did with The Godfather set. Initially it was not possible to purchase the first two without shelling out for a set that also included the (largely unwanted) third film.<p> Even though the two trilogies are being sold in broken up sets; if you don't shell out for both you miss the archive material. It's typical and not at all surprising. I'm also not going to try and fool anyone into thinking I won't be looking to purchase the complete set; but I'm going to hate myself a little bit the next morning. This better be the last damned time these films get released like this. It should be as Blu-Ray is the last new physical format that will be developed. Although if there's a way to drain our wallets digitally, I'm sure Uncle George already has ILM working on developing the tech behind it.

Re-watch the prequels. The CGI has aged poorly, and sadly with no story or decent acting to hang onto the prequels are now on par with something like Congo, bad racial sterotypes and all. If you still think the CGI in the prequels look good, you're drinking the Lucas kool aid that said it was okay to over look the story/acting/directing flaws because the effects are so mind blowing. I mean come on, the Pod Race scene watched now looks barely better than the Nintendo 64 game it spawned.

    Needs vs. Desires

    by Dasinfogod

"Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release Star Wars in three distinct sets to meet the <i>needs</i> of every Star Wars fan"<b>No press release goes out without a careful choice of words by the corporate entity distributing it. In short, what they are saying is that you only <i>need</i> what is being doled out on the new Blu-Ray. Star Wars fans clearly <i>desire</i> more, and a vocal few have stated the original cuts as a desire. <b>FHE and Luca$Land Inc. are the controlling body that determine actual needs, though. Those needs will change, of course, as determined by each re-issue of films over and over again - tweaking it just enough to justify the cost/profit ratio. <b>For those who are defending the revised versions of the films (no use calling them "Special Editions" anymore, as even the 1997 SEs have been superseded by later editions), more power to you. Your needs will be provided for aplenty by this Blu-Ray release, the eventual 3-D releases in the coming years, and whatever alterations are performed in the decades ahead in a money grab for Lucas' "original vision" that has apparently yet to be manifested... <b>As for the rest of us who'd just like to see the point of origin again, our desires are inconsequential... They aren't "needs", as the press release says.

    These aren't the Blu-rays you're looking for...

    by Mr. Pricklepants

Come on, George. Don't be such a pain in the ass. This Star Wars: The Complete Saga Blu-ray set will not be complete without the original theatrical versions of the Original Trilogy. That's what the real Star Wars fans want. Not your tinkered versions. Just include both versions on the Blu-rays. They did it with Apocalypse Now. They did it with Close Encounters of the Third Kind. They did it with the Alien movies. They did it with Blade Runner. They did it with Avatar. Spielberg will do it with E.T. (if he has any sense). Need I go on?<br> <br> In short, George, you, as the creator of Star Wars, have absolutely the right to tinker with these movies until they match your vision (or whatever). But you also have an obligation to the many Star Wars fans out there and also to history. These movies are cinematic landmarks. Well, the Original Trilogy is, anyway. To not put the Original Trilogy in their original theatrical versions on Blu-ray is like rewriting history. I mean, who cares if the visual effects are a bit dated by today's standards? So what? Toy Story looks a bit dated compared to Toy Story 3, but it's still a wonderful movie. Why? A great story and great characters. Just like the original Star Wars trilogy. <br> <br> But I'm guessing you're probably saving them for a later date. Twice the opportunity to make a lot of money, right?

Original Trilogy: original recipe or extra crispy?

    by blue meanie

Like KFC, everybody wants the original recipe, not extra crispy. Is this the original trilogy remastered (cleaned up picture wise) or that fucked up, CGed basterized, Greedo shoots first Special Edition shit??? Cause if Lucas is pimping the Special Edition shit again, it's over. I'm just going to hang on to my OT DVD set and forget this Blu Ray nonsense. Fuck Lucas, fuck your Jar Jar Binks ass to hell!

Great point. Of course I agree that there are plenty of talented artisans who worked on the prequels. No doubt. My point was only to focus on Lucas' shift in priorities. Something tells me that he is less interested in the possibilities of computer graphics as art and more so in its cost-saving abilities. The prequels were less to tell a story than they were to reboot the profit making abilities of the franchise. Anybody can see that.

    by THE_CHOPPAH

You ALMOST got it, so I'm going to help you out a bit. Don't forget this, though. There will be a test later. The prequel trilogy was indeed a cash grab. No doubt about that. But so was the original trilogy. You need look no further than Lucas' early insistence to own the rights to everything related to Star Wars, especially the toys. Lucas may not have known Star Wars was going to be the monster hit it was going to be, but he calculated, correctly, that at least kids would go for that shit and would want the toys. It extends to the whole original trilogy, even The Empire Strikes Back, which is deservedly recognized as one of the great Hollywood movies ever made. Hell, look at Return of the Jedi. Lucas alienated Gary Kurz on that one because he saw more possibilities for toy revenue than he did for wrapping up the story. So, just because something's a cash grab doesn't necessarily mean it's bad. It's all in the execution, and Lucas couldn't execute on the the prequels. That's that.

For whatever reason, right when it feels like I haven't seen Empire in years- boom, it's on TV. While I have no desire to buy the SE again, seeing it on Blu Ray would be great. However, I can't justify dropping a hundred bucks on a movie I've seen over and over since birth and will only view a handful of times until the next generation of technology sends Blue Ray packing.

Will these be better than the European/Sky HD Broadcasts???

    by The_Credible_Hulk

I have my doubts, at least for the original trilogy. My thinking is that Lucas and or Fox could screw something up in the remastering process. Possibly over process the source with DNR (Digital Noise Reduction) or over sharpen the picture. The european broadcasts looked better than most blu-rays out today. I sincerely hope this blu-ray set bests it in the picture department (I know it will for sound). As for the prequels, TPM is the one I'm most interested in. It looked like shit on all the HD broadcasts I've seen. It was shot on film and looked as though it had never been remastered. The other two prequels were shot on digital so I'd suspect they're going to look great in this set (as they did on the HD broadcasts.)

There is a difference between business and greed. I think Lucas' decision to own the property rights was a business decision- nothing wrong with making money. But I think this grew to something else which makes my entire point. He allowed greed to take over. We see it begin with the OT- thank goodness Kershner directed Empire and kept Lucas at bay, and see it take real form in Return, i.e.- Ewoks. The Prequels are the natural extension of Lucas turn toward the end of the OT. Regardless, I think we can agree that Lucas failed to execute on the prequels. And again, there are parts of the prequels that I enjoy. But I feel that they could have been better had George had better priorities. Furthermore, his decision to keep fans from having the non-special editions on blu-ray is him trying to spite us because we don't feel what he's done to his creation.

Hey why does't Coppola do a Godfather SE?

    by Kremzeek

You know you all want it. Sollozzo shoots first! Hey, but at least they cleaned up those matte lines, eh? Seriously, though. Fine, clean up the matte lines and the saber goofs and all that good stuff. That's cool. ...That's what some people in the industry call a "remaster" or "restoration". And I'm all for that. But why can Coppola (and lots of other filmmakers) do an actual restore without fucking things up, and Lucas can't? (And, no, I don't believe this whole "the originals are ruined forever" crap either.) Hey, I'm a perfectionist. I re-do shit constantly over and over and until it's perfect. And then I still fix stuff. So, I completely get where Lucas is coming from in that regard. But why remove the originals from existence? It makes no sense. Have 100000000 versions of the OT, I don't care. But at least leave us the option. Lucas would make SERIOUS BANK on those. Search your feelings. You know it to be true. Ah well. Whatever.

Practical explanation for only one version.....

    by OldDickLemon

As large as a bluray disc is, there is still a good amount of compression occurring when a film is placed on disc. Multiple versions means more compression. Include extras on same disc as movie, more compression. It's pretty much the same deal as the old school Criterion Laserdiscs. Largest file size possible means less compression means the best overall picture and sound quality possible. I'll leave the "it's not the version I want" complaining to everyone else, I just want the best looking copy of this series possible.

    Hey Flesh

    by Kremzeek

It's kinda funny that everyone brings up how kids all love it. My 11-year old thinks the prequels look like cartoons and says the OT is much better, even if it gets "a tiny bit boring in a couple spots". Keep in mind he's had no influence by me whatsoever as I'm kinda sick of SW these days and I never took him to those films when they came out as he was too young at the time. And I also find it funny that the "age" of the OT keeps coming up. I find that the PT has not held up well over time AT ALL. Esp. the first 2, but over time, I can guarantee Ep3 will look bad too. And that's all fine. Movies age. I'm just saying that pointing to the OT matte lines as worse than the PT ... is hilarious to me. Hell, even the CG they added for the OT SEs looks outdated now too. Yeah, and I'm sure they've vamped them up yet again for the 1080p transfer, but how long until those effects look bad? Pick your evil. They're all going to age. I'd pick old school production values - even if they're hokey now - over the N64-fest known as the PT. But to each their own.

The DVD versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy

    by jack black

are referred as George's Unaltered Trilogy aka GUT.They are based on the Unaltered OT movies found in the 2006 SW Bonus DVD release and there are various editions of those DVDs which all aim to improve only the technical quality of those films in the DVD specifications level, better image quality, better sound, better subtitles, etc I have downloaded DarkJedi's edition which is considered the best and indeed all the 3 movies look marvelous in my home cinema.Until that greedy bastard Luca$ comes to his senses and releases the OT in its theatrical version in the Bluray format,i will stick with the fan-enhanced DVD versions. You can find them in the usual places titled as GUT editions.

  • Jan. 6, 2011, 7:56 p.m. CST

I think we have to face the fact that

    by lv_426

Lucas is never going to let us have the OT in any form beyond VHS quality. Myself, I can deal with the special editions. ESB is fine, and actually some of the improved effects elements are actually better. ANH is fine once they leave Tatooine. ROTJ is fine once the stupid alien song and dance number is over at Jabba's Palace. Sure the end with ghost Hayden Christiansen is a bit annoying, but I can live with that one. It also sucks that they changed the Ewok's celebration song from Yub Nub, to the new one, whatever it is called. I am not a huge fan of the Prequel Trilogy, as I despise Phantom Menace, like Attack of the Clones well enough, and actually enjoyed Revenge of the Sith pretty well. The thing is that if you are not in the mood for any of the prequels, you can still start out with ANH as the whole OT stands up on its own. I would still like to have Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith in HD. Phantom Menace though, that is a complete waste of time. I definitely want the 3 discs-worth of extra features, which at this rate is fine by since I don't plan on buying Star Wars in 3D (I'll see the 3D OT in the theater) when they are inevitable released in a 3D Blu-ray set. For around 90 bucks I am cool with the big set, even though I'll probably skip Phantom Menace.

    canuflybobby

    by CeejayNightwing

No I'm not joking, Adywan's version of ANH makes intelligent improvements on the original that make the special editions that Lucas delivered look like a bad experiment. Adywan's versions do not insert silly aliens and goofy screwball comedy just for the fun of showing you what digital effects can do. He makes intelligent improvements like the inclusion of the planet Yavin into the background of most of the battle scenes as it should have been in the first place as they are in fact fighting infront of a planet! He uses the digital technology to fix things like bad jump-cuts for example when R2 switches from two legs to three. Even simple things like the Death Star plans being displayed at the Rebel assembly before the last battle is redone so that it no longer looks like it was done on a 4bit microcomputer from the 70's! All the stupid Jawa's faling of Ronto's and comedy droids Lucas wasted time on and this guy simply does a decent clean up job and colour correction with his own money that doesn't regress the picture to kindergarten comedy. And his battle between the TIE fighters and the attacking rogue groups in their Y & X wings is ten billion times better than Lucas's final delivery! So YES, unless you've compared Adywans's version to Lucas's special edition, you have no idea what an intelligent and far superior version it is!

Changes that need to be made...

    by performingmonkey

    1) Either cut Hayden from the end of ROTJ or reshoot his appearance to make it look less like what it really was - a makeup/wardrobe test shot from ROTS. 2) Do new edits of TPM, AOTC and ROTS, cutting out the worst-delivered lines, the fart jokes in TPM, the most pointless scenes etc. Re-integrate some of the deleted scenes. 3) FIX ONCE AND FOR ALL the shitty lightsaber shots in the OT as well as all the backgrounds they didn't bother CGI'ing in the special editions. Why do half a job?? 4) Cut the Jabba scene from ANH. Cut the stupid song from ROTJ. 5) Add brand new CGI to the OT, replacing more of the original model shots, making things blend seamlessly across all 6 movies. 6) AS WELL AS THESE VERSIONS GIVE US THE ORIGINAL CUTS OF ALL 6 MOVIES.

Yeah some things look great in the Special Editions (Bespin is vastly improved), but more often than not they are intrusive (added Jabba in E4, dance number in E6) or add nothing worthwhile (new Ewok song, Sarlacc tentacles). It's a mistake to think that the original is somehow unacceptable for HD - it projects just fine onto a big screen. There is zero chance of me seeking out the Special Edition. If that means I'll only ever be able to have a copy of the OT in DVDs then I can live with that.

I have bought and re-bought that movies over the year on VHS twice, laser disc and then DVD so having had a chance to grab these for free in nice 1080p versions that play on my HD direct into my Samsung that has a media play option via USB is total win.

    of course...

...you have to shell out for the full set to get the three extra discs (will those be HD?). Will there be the 1977/1980/1983 originals RESTORED from the elements Lucasfilm HAD TO HAVE USED to create the 'special editions'? I would never purchase Blu-rays of the prequels...it seems Lucasfilm/FOX Home understands I'm not alone, otherwise it would be something like two 3-disc packages at sell-through pricing. I am not spending ANYTHING on ANY Blu-ray set unless the restored and pristine 1977/1980/1983 versions are in there. There's no 'winning me over' otherwise in that regard.

Don't want the "special edition" OT movies

    by Keith

I just don't. Most of the new stuff is, to borrow Plinkett's phrase, "fucking offensive". There are a few nice shots, but much of the SE work is for stuff that really didn't need it. When I think about the scenes that actually could have benefited from a re-do, the most obvious ones to me are the "space slug" in Empire, and the destruction of the Executor in Jedi. The latter in particular is a very, very weak piece of FX by Star Wars's high standards. And NEITHER of these scenes were addressed in the SEs! We had dancing bloody muppets instead, and pointless tweaks to scenes that were absolutely fine as they were. Only stuff I remembered liking was the more dynamic X-wing vs TIE stuff at the first Death Star battle. And I guess the enhanced Bespin corridor shots were okay.

Apparently his ex would get some of the cash if he released them properly, and Luca$ can't have that can he. I mean, that's his cash, he needs it. Fuck the ex, fuck the fans. They're kids films anyway, it's like poetry, they rhyme, reverse angle, got my seat got my coffee, lets roll. It'll be great..

...Luca$ will keep screwing the fans over and over again. If NOBODY was to pre-order or buy this he'd finally take the hint, pull his finger out of his ass and remaster the original trilogy prints for release. I'm going to stick with my low resolution DVD versions from a few years back as they're so much more watchable than the special, special editions.

    mattmanreturns, Most Fanedits are bullshit..

    by CeejayNightwing

But not Adywans, all this talk about the film makers vision is one thing, but in the case of George Lucas its not about vision, it's about what else he can use SW to experiment with. No film in the entire history of Hollywood has gone through as much cosmetic changes as the SW films and that's only because the film maker claiming to do it out of his need to capture his original vision, actually has no vision at all and only wants to see what he can change for the hell of it to promote his digital technology. Are you gonna argue that Greedo shooting first was impossible to do in 1976 while they were shooting so he had to wait 20 years for digital tech to catch up so he can get that right? You gonna argue that he always wanted to show a younger version of Anakin's ghost at the end of ROTJ but couldn't cast a young actor to do so so he had to wait till he made the prequels to do that? Do yourself a favour and don't be so narrow minded, Lucas is not a born director nor is he a prolific natural film maker, he's a guy who got very lucky with a lot of help on a film in 1977 which made him into a millionaire and that's it. He had no vision o SW, they were making these stories up as they went and always started shooting these films before they ever had a final script except in the case of TESB. Lucas had no vision to plan the entire series of films let alone plan how the stories are going to unfold otherwise someone like Count Dooku would have been seen on the Jedi Council in TPM before he decided to make him up in AOTC and just state he was on the council 10 years ago (yeah, the same ten years ago when TPM happened!). Fan edits may be at most parts just versions that cut stuff they don't like out. But Adywans are nothing like that, he generates his own FX to remake the conception of scenes and he corrects the unbalanced colour that has been lost from the original transfer as well as re-editing some scenes the way they were in originally before silly changes were made. His version is very professional looking becasue he spent a fortune and over a year making it so. Infact, he's spent more time on his edition of ANH than George did on his special editions of all three OT movies and the difference shows!

Some of Adywans edits, judge for yourself!

    by CeejayNightwing

1 - Star Wars Logo: originally it receded way too quickly so this has been slowed down to match the speed in the rest of the saga. 2 - The crawl appears slightly earlier now, as it did pre ANH, so it appears at the correct music cue that Williams’ intended, and how I remember it. 3 - As the camera pans down to Tatooine you now see the 3 moons instead of just 2 4 - Tatooine now rotates slightly as the ships fly overhead 5 - Re-coloured all lasers 6 - Removed the horrible blue hazing as the stardestroyers engine come into view 7 - Changed the explosion as the Tantive IV is hit to remove a lot of the smoke. 8 - Added a jerk to the motion of the Tantive IV as it is hit 9 - Speeded up the star field in that shot so the Tantive IV seems to be moving as fast as it did in previous shots. 10 - Colour correction of the whole film to remove the blue tint. The Tantive IV’s walls are now white. 11 - Re-coloured R2’s dome lights throughout the movie so they match closer to the rest of the saga. The front light now blinks from red to blue. 12 - Re-edited the Tantive IV corridor battle to fix continuity issues where troopers die more than once. 13- Added blaster flashes to all blasters that have them missing as they fire. 14 - Added blast flashes to the troopers where they are hit 15 - Corrected issues where the blasters flash as if they were fired on set but no laser bolts were present. Added the lasers to fix this throughout. 16 - Fixed the jump cut where 3PO & R2 cross the corridor on the Tantive IV & the doorway explodes. 17 - When Vader enters the Tantive IV a Stormtrooper lets go of the head of a dead trooper but that you can see that the actor slowly lowers his head. This has been fixed and the troopers head now drops at speed more like a dead body. 18 - Added blinking lights to Vader’s chest plate 19 - Vader’s eyes re-coloured to remove the red tint. 20 - When 3PO is looking for R2 a trooper falls to the floor behind him as if he has been shot but there is no laser fire. Added some lasers & a flash as the trooper is hit. 21 - Smoothed / fixed the jump cut as R2 extends his third leg and heads for 3PO & the one where he leaves 3PO 22 - Fixed the error in the scene where Vader is strangling Antilles the trooper in the background changes position in one shot. Originally his legs are closed and his blaster is in a totally different position. 23 - Fixed an FX issue when Leia is hit by the stun blaster the glow effect is missing on part of her dress. 24 - In the scene where R2 presses the button to open the pod door you now see his arm retract 25 - Re-coloured the interior of the escape pod to blue due to continuity issues in this scene. 26 - As the escape pod blasts off it now begins to rotate as it does in the rest of the shots 27 - When the imperial commander says “hold your fire” the trajectory of the escape pod has been changed so it is heading downwards and away from the ship instead or just heading straight which caused a continuity error in the next shot as we see the underbelly of the stardestroyer , which means it was heading downwards. 28 - Changed the stars & stardestroyer view from inside the pod so the ship & stars now recede at different rates 29 - You now see the escape pod enter the atmosphere of Tatooine. 30 - Every FX shot has been either touched up or redone in some form or another, but too many to mention every one. 31 - On Tatooine the escape pod canopy has been re-coloured to remove the odd blue colour 32 - In the some scenes the sky has been changed to match other shots. 33 - Added the sandcrawler from the OUT to replace the static shots when 3P0 thinks he is rescued 34 - Completely new canyon wipe so the rocky surroundings that R2 travels through matches closer to what Tatooine looks like in the PT. Also brightened the scene slightly 35 - Fixed a shot of R2 after he is captured where you see the mark of a restraining bolt before it is attached. In some previous shots it is also somewhat visible but I was unable to fix this. 36 - Fixed a placement continuity error with the restraining bolt that the Jawas fix to R2 37 - Added a battle droid to the scrap inside the Sandcrawler. Also brightened up the inside scenes Fixed 38 - Fixed R2's eye dome in the shot inside the sandcrawler where it looks like you can see Kenny Baker inside. 39 - Inside the sandcrawler 3PO's eyes blink as he stands. Fixed 40 - Re-coloured the sky in the SE shots of the sandtroopers & Sandcrawler so the colour the sky is less saturated and closer matches the sky we see at the homestead. 41 - When Beru calls to Luke as they are about to inspect the droids, bushes appear & disappear from shot to shot. Removed the bushes from the shots of Luke to fix this error. 42 - Removed a wire visible coming out of 3PO’s neck while Owen talks to him at the sale 43 - Removed the repeated shot of R2 & the red R5 unit to fix a continuity error. Replaced with a new shot. 44 - Fixed the pink sky effect just before this scene fades out. 45 - Added the missing glow from R2's holo light in the garage. 46 - Brightened & desiderated the sunset scene. 47 - Fixed the colour problem in the shot where 3PO jumps as Luke activates the restraining bolt in the garage. In the 2004 DVDs this shot was sepia. An example of some very bad colour problems with these DVDs. 48 - As Luke races out of the Garage to use his macrobinoculars I have added 3PO running out of the doorway to fix an error that he suddenly appears out of nowhere. 49 - New macrobinocular graphics that add in 3PO. All other macrobinocular graphics changed too. 50 - Removed the droids tracks from a previous take make it look like it is being pulled along by a cord. 51 - When Owen shouts Luke the Treadwell droid is in a totally different place than the previous shot and a fly lands on the camera lens. Fixed both issues. 52 - In the shot where the Tusken raiders see Luke’s speeder travelling through the canyon the speeder suddenly seems to speed up towards the end and looks unnatural. Recomposited the speeder to fix this. 53 - Re-coloured the sky in some shots when Ben rescues Luke so it is more blue instead of very grey/ white, which it isn’t in the shot where Ben scares the Tusken raiders. 54 - Smoothed the jump cut where Luke ignites the sabre in Obi-Wan's hut 55 - Added the missing ornament on Ben's table in the shot of Leia's hologram. 56 -Added the missing cloak on the wall behind Luke as he ignites the sabre. 57 - Re-edited the whole “Ben’s Home” not only to fix the continuity errors but also because the conversation about the force and Luke's father is now all together and flows better instead of being split into 2 separate conversations. It now starts off with the viewing of the hologram and fixes the continuity problems. 58 - Added a new death Star sequence prior to the conference room scene to give the death star a better reveal. It now orbits a planet in all shots up until it is reported that it is fully operational. 59 - Changed the torture droids syringe arm. Removed the writings and added a laser effect. 60 - Mos Eisley approach re-edited. Removed some of the creatures on the first shot & extended the path of the landspeeder so it now fully enters the town. 61 - Completely removed the Ronto/ Jawa sequence. 62 - Removed the probe droid hit but the worker droid. 63 - Removed both Rontos from the checkpoint scene. 64 - Removed the probe droid from this scene also 65 - Fixed the ship that flies in front of the vaporator making it look tiny. 66 - When Luke looks over to the cantina it is heavily cast in shadow but as they approach there are no shadows. This has been fixed. 67 - Added facial movements to some cantina creatures. 68 - In the shot where you see Ponda Babba's severed arm I have removed the blood & replaced the hand with the hoof like one we see him with in other shots (XVID workprint version only) - This was replaced by the hand of Dr. Evazan for the DVD-5 & 9 versions as he was the one holding the blaster. 69 -More facial movements & blinks for Greedo 70 -HAN SHOOTS FIRST!! Greedo no longer shoots either. 71 - Removed the Jabba scene 72 - As they approach docking bay 94 you see R2 at the side of 3PO but as the camera pans and he goes out of shot you suddenly see him appear again from a different direction, which would be impossible for him to appear so quickly. Fixed this error 73 - Re-added the fade wipe as they approach the falcon. 74 - Added the falcons dish in the docking bay shot and expanded the docking bay. 75 – Slightly re-edited the docking bay shootout to fix some continuity issues 76 - Fixed the issues with Hans “wobbly” wrist as he fires 77 - Added the missing middle strut to all the Falcons cockpit window scenes. 78 - Added the blue glow back to the Falcons engines. 79 - As the falcon escapes Tatooine it now actually does some manoeuvres instead of “listing lazily to the left” 80 - New Alderaan for all the viewscreen shots 81 - New Alderaan explosion 82 - Re-rotoscoped all lightsabres and fixed Luke’s green & wobbly sabre during the training session. 83 - Re-composited the holo chess character so they look more like holograms now. 84 - In close-up shots of R2 the background has the control light from the Death Star interior. These shots now have the correct background. 85 - Fixed the jump cut as Luke turns off his sabre. 86 - Added the colour to the remotes laser that was missing from the 2004 DVD's 87 - In the scene where Vader says "I told you she would never...." he gestures after he has stopped talking. This has been fixed. 88 - More asteroids when the Falcon reaches the Alderaan system 89 - New docking bays for exterior shots to match the new interior ones. 90 - Removed the blue screen pole that is visible as the Falcon enters the docking bay and the girder crane in the top left which isn’t there when you see the interior of the docking bay 91 - Added a glow to the shield light to all shots of the docking bay interior. 92 - Added the censored shot of the officer being hit as they break into the control room. 93 - Re-coloured the displays in the control room so they are no longer black & white 94 - The Death Star's interiors are now metallic grey instead of the horrible blue. 95 - When Han, Luke & chewy wait at the elevator a trooper walks past them wearing a light coloured uniform but in the next shot it is a dark uniform. Re-coloured the light uniform to fix this. 96 - Added the censored shot of the officer being hit in the detention cell shootout. 97 - In the final shots of this sequence a trooper falls down the stairs but only the scenery was hit. The trooper now gets hit. 98 - In the scene where the stormtroopers are about to blast their way into the detention cell, the elevator door has visible signs that it has been rigged for to blast apart and looks a mess. Fixed this issue. 99 - New tractor beam matte shots. 100 - Recomposited the SE shot of the many stormtroopers as Han chases them to look more natural 101 - New wider shot of Luke & Leia as they swing across the chasm. They now look to be a lot higher up. 102 - Re-edited the lightsabre duel to give it a faster pace 103 - The lightsabre impact flashes cover both characters even though it should only be visible in front of the character closest to the camera. This has been fixed 104 - Removed the visible power cable from the lightsabre up Ben's sleeve 105 - As Han & chewy reach the docking bay you can see the shadows of Luke & Leia awaiting their cue. Removed the shadows. 106 - Replaced the dummy of Ben as Vader kills him. You now see his face and Vader actually slices through him and you see him disappear. 107 – Removed the bar holding R2’s legs in place when the droids head for the falcon 108 - When Luke blasts the control panel the door blast door closes, but in the next shot it closes again. This has been fixed. 109 - As the Falcon leaves the docking bay it originally left very slowly even though the engines ignite and it should have accelerated faster. It does now. 110 - Fixed the wobbly holotable as Luke gets up to head to the gun port. 111 - Removed the horribly bad motion blur from the shots of Luke & Han in the gun port as the TIEs approach 112 - Redone the TIE battle sequence so the falcon no longer appears to be just sitting there and added a few new shots. 113 - Brand new explosions for TIES in this sequence 114 - Added a faster moving star field to all interior window shots of the gun port including shots that were missing a star field. 115 - When 3PO is entangled in the wires after the battle, again the close up of R2 has the death star interior background. It now has the correct Falcon corridor background. 116 - After the battle you now see the falcon enter hyperspace.9 no longer in the edit. decided that it didn't need to be shown due to vader 's line in the following scene 117 - Added the Hyperspace wormhole to the cockpit sequence. 118 - The Falcon now can be seen exiting hyperspace as it approaches Yavin. 119 - In the shot of the Falcon as it flies over the trees on Yavin IV the clouds have been changed to matched the rest of the sequence. I've also added the falcons shadow on the trees as it flies over. 120 - New interior shot of the Hanger bay. Removed the cardboard fighters and given the hanger greater depth. 121 - Fixed the following flip shots as they step off the transport vehicle. 122 - New Death Star schematics. 123 - Darkened the rebel briefing scene and once it is over the lighting becomes brighter. 124 - New up to date briefing room graphics for the display. 125 - A lot of the Rebel pilots have Blue insignias on their helmets but there is no blue squadron in the final draft. Re-coloured all blue insignias to red. 126 - The shot of Yavin & the Death star following the briefing room scene has been changed so that Yavin matches the SE Yavin 127 - When we see Han loading up his reward the Y-wing in the background is missing one of its engines because only half the ship was built. This has been fixed. 128 - Fixed the horrible jump cut of R2 as he is loaded into the X-Wing while Luke talks to Biggs & Red Leader. 129 - Added an extra stripe to one of the high view X-Wing shots to remove the repeated red leader X-Wing shots 130 - As the X-wing lifts off it now flies forward and not just straight up. 131 - As Luke leaves the temple you can now see the exterior of the temple from the rear cockpit window. 132 - Re-edited all Rebel command centre shots to fix issues where the image has been flipped (you can tell because 3PO's dent on his head keeps swapping sides) Also Leia keeps changing position. 133 - Added Yavin to the rear cockpit windows of the fighters as they report in and to various shots throughout the battle. 134 - Ships engines are now again red and not pink. 135 - Re-coloured R2 so his dome is now blue and not black in all space shots. 136 - Fixed few flip shots of various pilots during the battle (the microphone keeps swapping sides) 137 - Added new shots throughout the sequence including a whole new TIE battle sequence 138 - The rebel command centre table now includes holograms 139 - The death star countdown clock & viewscreen is also a brand new updated display. 140 - The window at the back of Vader's cockpit has been blacked out because there should be no window. 141 - Fixed issues where ships were missing in numerous scenes in the trench run when they should be in view. This includes both TIES & X-wings 142 - Fixed the issue with the Trench approach where the shots clearly change from a flat matte to a model shot after the flash and really jumps out at you. It flows together between both sources better now. Also both times we see it they used the same shot. Each one now has slight differences to them. 143 - When Vader fires at Luke and hits R2 he is actually firing beneath the X-wing but then next shot he hits R2 which would have been impossible. This issue has been fixed 144 - When R2 Is hit the next shot you can see no smoke or damage through Luke’s cockpit window. This has been fixed 145 - Added damage to R2s body to match the shot where he is unloaded from the X-Wing later. 146 - Re-coloured bit X-wing & TIE targeting displays 147 - A lot of shots throughout the Death Star battle the cockpit shots just have a plain black background. All cockpit shots now show what should be visible outside. 148 - When Red Leader is killed I’ve you see an explosion but nothing makes it. I’ve added the x-wing hitting the surface. 149 - Removed all of the “swinging TIES2 seen in the rear cockpit windows. The TIEs now more naturally according to the scene 150 - A very slight edit to the Biggs death scene. Luke now reacts better to the death of his friend. 151 - When the Falcon comes to the rescue and hits the left hand TIE fighter the laser both never actually hits the TIE fighter. This has been fixed 152 - You now see the death star begin to fire as it explodes 153 - New death Star explosion shot that integrates brand new footage and OUT and removed the shock wave ring. 154 - When Vader spins out of control you can now see stars through his cockpit windows. 155 - Chewie now gets a medal

Adywan does not exist in this dojo

    by Cobra--Kai

Ceejay, nice job pointing that out.<p> Even with the added clarity of blu ray it would be hard to go back to Lucas's version after seeing Adywan's incredible edit.<p> Anyone interested in seeing it - don't watch it on shitty youtube. You can download it at DVD quality over at fanedit.org. First you have to check their faq and download a little program called jdownloader, then you can download any movies from their archive (legally too, as long as you own a copy of the movie already).<p> It's the definitive version of STAR WARS imho.. and of course Han does shoot first!

I hope they put more shit in the background

    by travismays

If there's one thing I wish they would have done when they released the Original Trilogy, it's to put more shit in the background. As a child I remember watching these movies, utterly distracted by the complete lack of shit happening in the background. I hope George Lucas finally succeeds in bringing his original vision to the screen, and putting lots of shit in the background.

  • Jan. 7, 2011, 5:47 a.m. CST

    by Cobra--Kai

Shit in the background is great as long as their's interesting stuff in the foreground... which is where the prequels fall down.<p> But shit in the background... lots of detail on screen... think Terry Gilliam movies, think LOTR trilogy, think Ridley Scott... the amount of visual information, texture, and detail on screen is fantastic. It adds to a movie not detracts... provided the shit in the foreground is there too!

    jettl1993 ...

    by justmyluck

I have no doubt the HD versions of the OT 'special' editions will be strong sellers, even with new effects. However, if you wanted modern visual effects, you would re-do every single explosion on the Death Star surface, every puff of fake snow from the AT-AT explosions. Would that be STAR WARS anymore, for even the most casual fans? No. The 1977-1983 visual effects and creatures need to be preserved in HD, along with the 6-track and matrixed theatrical soundtrack mixes. This is American film heritage...scratch that..GLOBAL. There is no way the OT will look 'modern' to new fans, no matter how much CGI gets dolloped-on. Using computers in a 2D manner to remove the garbage matte shapes, fix optical composite opacity and matte lines is fine by me, but for other fans film buffs even this is sacrilegious. The heavy use of CGI made the SW prequels look one step removed from reality - which one does not take seriously, dramatically - unless, I suppose you are very young. Do kids notice the finer details of visual effects...many are engaged by 2D cartoons and practical puppet shows. 3D conversion will make the practical miniatures look small and 'miniature'...do these models get replaced as well at that stage? When does STAR WARS stop trying to be modern and finally appear to be from A LONG TIME AGO? Imagine the OT circulate casually through repertory theaters from new digitally mastered prints - un-fussed with CGI - as classics.

you should use it to your advantage and ask/beg for the original trilogy to be finally made available in HD. Perhaps if enough dying people use their last requests it might be enough to guilt him into it. What do you have to lose aside from your self respect?

Lucas should release a "Make-Your-Own-Star-Wars" app that includes the footage from original releases ... special edition releases ... AND on-line bootleg stuff (like Luke at Tatooine with funky hat) and let fans compose their OWN preferred version of Star Wars. Even throw in alternate audio clips so fans can chose which version of Fett's voice to hear, etc. I'd buy it!

    What a greedy bastard!

    by The_Motorcycle_Boy

So people have to buy the Prequels if they want any extras? Hopefully the Rebel Alliance will put those bonus discs up a torrent to bring down this Empire... I am actually surprised that he is allowing the OT to be released seperately at all. Still, they'll probably have even more stuff that comes across as comical (Boba's new voice, mate!) or just ruin previously good scenes (Vader talking to the puffy faced Emperor about the son of Skywalker). Am I the only person who recalls Lucas talking about the little personal films he was going to make after ROTS? What's he done since? An Indy sequel and Star Wars TV shows!

Fucking grown men and women with endless tears and feeling of betrayal over about 1.5 seconds of film. Motherfucker. I'd like to see CGI Yoda for PM, but if not, oh fucking well. Guess what, I'll live and get the hell over it.

Yeah, concerning yourself with the ammount of effort taken to preserve the historic original films is obviously the thought process of a juvenile. It's not like any of the films in question were recently inducted into the National Film Archive for future generations recently... plain kids stuff.

    Make your own anamorphic OT!

    by darthwaz1

ok, take your unaltered dvd's, run them through Handbrake (free download), so the file is now an MP4. re-burn this file onto a blank dvd, (toast, idvd, ect) make sure your burning software is set for anamorphic and there ya go!

    by darthwaz1

This process is in no way illegal if you already own the dvd's.

    by Subtitles_Off

BING BING BING We have a winner. Congratulations! You're in Star Wars heaven, now. Can we shut up about this generations-long crap-fest, yet? Nope. I forgot the 3D re-releases will come. Gawd, they're never going to shut up!

    Cant wait!

    by Kakii

I love all of them, including ep1! The new trilogy was never gonna give me the same feelings and awe I had as a child, just like the second time with crack doesnt beat the first time. So I will buy the full saga boxset, but my only concern is ep 3 looks practically BR when upscaled, so that ep could be dissapointing from a picture point of view. I really hope they do a really cool digipack boxset and not just stick seperate BR's in a box like a lot of boxsets. Note: I do however now understand and sympaphise with those that hate the prequals after I made the mistake of wathing X-Men Origins:Wolverine

    Fucking Whiners!

    by Chief Joseph

How dare you ask for a quality release of the original editions of the Star Wars Trilogy on the latest home video format!!! You should silently and without question just hand over your hard-earned cash to Master George and just accept whatever is given to you!!

  • Jan. 7, 2011, 7:32 p.m. CST

Sorry Jorge i will wait for the super-bluray ultimate

    by jack black

I'm sure Palpatine had an alternate plan for him to die in captivity had Anakin not acted, I think the novel may have mentioned this...

    Both Versions?

    by liam

I wonder if the discs for Episodes IV, V and VI will contain both the original theatrical versions AND the Special Edition versions? Crossing my fingers they do. I'm a fan of the Special Edition versions, but occasionally I like to go back and watch the unaltered editions too. Counting down to September.
