A Full Report on DREAMWORKS' Animation Slate! Heavy on SHREK and SPIRIT,

Published at:  Nov 30, 1999 10:27:58 AM CST

Hey folks, just got in a notice from Jawad Mir from WWW.Spielberg-Dreamworks.COM that he had received an excellent report on Dreamworks' Animation Slate. Of special notice is the information on SHREK (the second PDI film) and SPIRIT (Dreamworks' first Cinemascope Animated Film). Why is this so cool? Because it's the most extensive information yet on the films. I've included the text below, but you really should check out WWW.Spielberg-Dreamworks.COM today for not only this but a report on THE LEGEND OF BAGGER VANCE, that Spielberg 18 minute documentary 'UNFINISHED JOURNEY' that will be shown to herald in the next century, millenium, etc... Great job Jawad!

Shrek........done by PDI ( Antz) seen line up of characters & storyboards............sorry cant seem to remember character names right now..lol but Mike myers plays the title character the Orge ........ he looked across between Disneys Hunchback quasimodo & that Orge from ' The Goonies his side kick is a donkey voiced by Eddie Murphy........the donkey is really awsome looking with the big mouth & jutting teeth........A real Jackass Saw scene where they are waking through a Field with high Sunflowers taller than them..........really beautiful stuff the girl the orge falls in love with is a gypsy girl voiced by Cameron Diaz.... Linda Hunt i believe plays an old fortune teller & john Lithgow is the villian.

NOTE: HARRY HERE! THERE ARE SPOILERS ABOUT THE STORY ARC FOR SPIRIT BELOW. IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO KNOW THE BREADTH OF THIS STORY... IE WHERE IT BEGINS AND WHERE IT ENDS... THEN DO NOT READ. YOU MIGHT SERIOUSLY NOT WANT TO READ THIS... SPOILER WARNING!!!!

Spirit looks Incredible....yes its gonna be in Cinema scope.......What i saw about it was Character model sheets, Storyboards & concept art........This one looks incredible...........................the story is about the life of Spirit is a wild horse who can not be tamed.......i saw a scene by scene profile of the character through its life.....,,,,,,,,,
these might not be in exact order ...but this is what i recall...

1) in the wild

2) Captured & attempted to be broken by the indians...he had indian marks on his body...you know like handprints for battle/war

3) Captured by the calvary when they defeat the indians......drafted into the calvary...branded with an US marking on his hide & his Mane is trimed to a buzz cut

4) unable to be broken sent to the Rodeo

5) Sent to work the mines.......were he looks defeated & weary

6) free in the wild again

this is a break down on Spirits life......i might be missing a section but cant think of it right now

saw lots of characters designs...............the Calvary.......wagons, guns, uniforms, flags model sheets 2 other horses i seen as major characters were...........

Granite...........like a wise old horse..i think the generals horse in the calvary......but not entirely sure

and i think a female horse is named " Rain"

now i've heard there was not gonna be any dialogue at one time but then again i've heard there was gonna be????? i was told in March that the only voice cast at the time was.............Robert Redford.............Narrator maybe? Granite maybe? all i know is this movie looks incredile beyond belief & i cant wait myself :)

    UGH!

    by irie

Dreamwork's better do something quick. For christ's sake, even DISNEY isn't doing these kind of films anymore! They both sound like extended tampon commercials.

    Horse Whisperer

    by dehayd

Wonder what tone of voice Redford will use as the narrator? Stupid me, when I saw Spirit, I thought Will Eisner! (Though any screen adaptation of his classic strip would likely be a travesty.) This Shrek thing has been around a while, but I can't figure out what's so special about it. Sounds like a Hunchback retread.

    Those who used the FORUMS

    by retrop

I don't have anything to say on this topic, and I fully expect this post to be deleted rather quickly... But since Harry and his crew seem to be ignoring our inquiries into the status of the Forums I'll post here... For those of you who used to use the forums, to talk or just read and miss having it around we have set up a "temporary" one until Harry gets them back up...if he gets them back up. Most of us intend on returning if they are put back up, but until then we're using a forum at hostboard, so if you want, come on over and join in.
It's at hostboard.com in the film section and the name is "Our Forum".... Biddle

After seeing the (minimal) production work from Square on the Final Fantasy movie, it's going to take A LOT to impress me now.

    Lookit All The DreamWorks Haters!

    by anton_sirius

I guess it doesn't matter that Antz was better than its Disney clone, or that Prince of Egypt pushed more boundaries tahn Disney's done in decades, or that they put out brilliant films like American Beauty, or that the studio is rapidly becoming a haven for talent like Zemeckis and Crowe and Ridley Scott; nope, they're just a bunch of hacks and rip-off artists. Of course, none of that is any excuse for The Love Letter, but nobody's perfect.

What's your freakin' problem with Dreamworks...

    by flmlvr

...They're finally getting their shit together after a slow start and all you people want to do is bitch...Look, finally they're starting to follow up on their promise to be the creative stuido....where creativity thrives...Just wait and see....I for one think Spirit sounds pretty cool....it's a different take on your average animated film...but I guess if you want crap like Tarzan and Hercules the rest of your life keep bitching...

Gotta Say I Preferred A BUGS LIFE to ANTZ

    by mrbeaks

But I'm a sucker for that SEVEN SAMURAI plot. Being a huge Woody Allen fan, I thought ANTZ would be right up my alley, but I only found it intermittently clever. Also, I really don't think we should give Disney credit for Pixar's triumphs. It's clear those boys are working on a much higher plane than the Mouse House.

Now, now, Flmlvr...Tarzan was actually pretty good and Hercules' heart was in the right place (wrong music). Anyways, I don't understand what all the Dreamworks bashing is about. All that stuff about how they copied A Bug's Life with Antz is biased towards Disney. I read an article that insinuated that Kat...whatever his name is spelled...took the Antz/Bug's Life idea with him to Dreamworks when he left Disney. All of it was his idea that he didn't think Disney was going to do...or so he said. And so what if Antz was made with Bug's Life in mind...it was retalliation for the poor treatment by Disney execs and also the better of the two films, IMO. I say it's about time someone put Disney in check regarding its animation. (we all agree Pixar gets the credit for Toy Story and its sequel) Look at how they aren't just sputtering out a cookie cutter formula on their animated movies...note, Tarzan had only one song "sung" by the characters. (I don't count the mother's lullaby.)

    Cavalry

    by jaygarrick

I know I'm just being a nitpicker, but it's cavalry. Calvary is where Christ supposedly died. The Cavalry is mounted soldiers. I'm sorry, I just couldn't handle it, especially after being disappointed the movie would be about a horse and not the comic book character.

You're always wanting to mess with me on TB and expose me for the wuss I am....like that time we we're all talkin' eighties flix and well I fucked up and you pointed it out (fast food)...so you all could laugh at little flmlvr...fine laugh all you want All Thumbs...JK...Okay here's my deal on the statement on Tarzan and Hercules....Maybe I was harsh in calling them crap...I used the term as an extreme example....Let me say it this way...to me Dreamworks is trying to put out different animation...something we haven't seen before and so on...where as Disney...up to Tarzan is satisfied with putting the same mold of animation on screen...pretty animation..heroic/ underdog story, and slap in a couple of songs and it's ready to be served with the happy meal....Now granted Tarzan was a step forward...I actually liked it...it had one song...different style of animation...and was a bit darker then their average film...not including hunchback...where imho dreamworks is trying to do more adult/children fare with different stories...oh well...I'm just freakin' ramblin now....Hope you got your paper done on time.....

Flmlvr, I would never point out you are wrong...often...JK

    by all thumbs

Yeah, I did...but that was just the first draft and I have three more due. Ah...I love the smell of the last weeks of school in the winter. Anyways...I totally agree with you on the fact that Dreamworks is working towards putting animation out there that appeals to both young and...older. I've just seen a lot of the Disney films (while still in dire need of improvement) that are still pretty good quality lumped in with certain other popular kiddie series on television that will remain nameless because I can't spell their names correctly anyways...

Hey damn't there is nothing wrong with Pokemon...I sport a Pokemon wallet...and I'm 21....hell all the little kids think I'm hella cool...Man, you can smell winter in the air...shit it's barely getting cold yet here in Tempe....It doesn't even feel like winter....but yes winter break rules as well as do the holidays...Kay here comes a bunch of questions for you....Hey so what did you think Of Sleepy Hollow? Did you see Dogma or Toy Story 2...And speaking of animation did you catch Princess Mononke yet? Anyways, if it wasn't Pokemon you were talking about...I will be expecting you to humilate me in front of everyone in TB.....

Yes, I meant Pokemon, among others...

    by all thumbs

...like many of the Ren and Stimpy rip-offs and those "new" lame-ass Tex Avery ones. Anyways, I did see Sleepy Hollow and I was a bit disappointed in it. Johnny Depp was not as good as what I read, but Christina Ricci was far better than I expected, so it made up for it in the end. The Horseman was perfect and so was the gore...I didn't know blood could be so beautiful. I still haven't seen Toy Story 2! I tried to get people to go when I was home for break, but no one wanted to see a kids' movie. See? This is the problem with animation not being accepted into the mainstream...I have to go alone to a movie in my hour of desperation. (Actually, I have a friend who loves Disney who will go this weekend if she's not busy.)

    re:Christ DOA

    by uncle cracky

I always heard it was at a place called Golgotha. And as far as animation being accepted by the mainstream: how else does one account for Disney's undeserved success? Now, GOOD animation, that's another ball of wax. Then again, maybe GOOD animation is GOOD because it hasn't been bastardized and dumbed down for the public. And don't gimme that "the public isn't given enough credit" excuse. If they're so smart, why are so many of them dead? :-)

    disney molds

    by nm8tor

first off disney does not produce the work that PIXAR does. toystory 1 and 2, and a bugs life were all created and written by PIXAR. Even though i respect the rich animation history and the skill Disney brought up, i cant respect them for making cookie cutter movies. It seems like Disney has brought the artistic, and inovative ideas side couple of notches down, and brought marketing to the top. I was hoping P.D.I. whould bring innovation to animation back. Even though i enjoyed ANTZ very much, it is lacking in animation compared to BUGS LIFE. One thing PIXAR has done is improve with every film. They have also become better story tellers and inovators. Im hoping P.D.I does the same for SHREK. Right now John Lasseter is the new Walt Disney in my book.

    bad info

    by sfilichia

I happen to work on Spirit and can tell you that this info is almost a year old. Nost of it is incorrect and has changed drastically. I can't say anymore because I do work on the show, but I thought I should set the record straight so that people know to question the reliability of the person whosent in this tidbit. I'm not saying that this wasn't true at one point, but not anymore.

    Actually, Golgotha is correct too.

    by 7777777

Matthew, Mark and John said the place where Christ died was Golgotha (which means The Place of the Skull). Luke said the place was called Calvary.
