Nordling is curious, do Houstonians want AICN Screenings? How about GREEN HORNET this Thursday?

Published at:  Jan 02, 2011 11:46:38 PM CST

All right Houstonian fans of Ain't It Cool News... for so long you've heard of amazing screenings happening in Austin and Chicago and L.A. and you've wanted to be there in the worst way. Well, guess what.  Now Houston's on the screening map as well!  I'm so excited to be working my first Ain't It Cool screening, and it's for a movie I dearly love... THE GREEN HORNET!  In 3D no less!

That's right.  This Thursday, at 7:30pm at the Alamo Drafthouse West Oaks, we're going to be screening Michel Gondry's THE GREEN HORNET, a really fun movie that I has a blast with when it played BNAT in December.  But unfortunately for me, I didn't get to see it in 3D. Well, it's 3D all the way this time, baby!

First 200 entries get in the screening.  You need to send me an e-mail that says, "IT'S NOT EASY BEING GREEN!" It needs to say exactly that, all caps, otherwise it's going to fall through the cracks and I will not receive it.  Also, don't contact me through Twitter for passes - you must send an e-mail if you wish to attend.  Put your full name and you may bring one guest, and we will need their name as well.  Seats are limited and Drafthouse screenings fill up, so anyone who asks for more than one guest will not be able to bring them.

Send all requests to my e-mail at thenordling@gmail.com by Tuesday night, 8:00 PM.  I will have the list up shortly after that, so check back at Ain't It Cool News later Tuesday evening.

Can't wait.  This will be my first AICN screening and I'm really excited to be sharing this with all of you.  And with luck there will be more screenings in the future!  Keep reading!  And thanks!

Nordling, out!

    Nordling...

    by ufoclub1977

    is in Houston???

What's the background? Working at the Alamo at West Oaks?

Too bad I moved to Ann Arbor (home of the fictional Dharma Initiative, a founder of Photoshop and a major player at ILM - John Knoll, and the setting for the bookends of "Men Who Stare at Goats"...

Get some stuff going here! It's a huge college town. Much like Austin.

Houston's not that bad. I live here. It's not as cool as Austin, granted, and I'm sure Harry can attest to that; but it's not the Road Warrior scenario you paint it as.

Forbes just ranked Houston #2 for best places to live for young adults. Four Texas cities are in the top ten, dipshit. You might know that if you ever pulled your head out of your ass long enough to acquaint yourself with the facts about the Lone Star state.

Kiss my Texan ass, and have a nice day.

    ACTUALLY, WILFORD

    by aka_gern_blanston

At least Houston has professional sports teams and doesn't have to pin all its hopes on college ball. Plus, we may have a lot of gang problems, but in Austin you guys can't fart on the street without it hitting a self-centered yuppie. And if you don't hit a yuppie, you'll hit a douchebag fratboy that will protest things he doesn't understand just because it makes him look involved.

However, you DO have Amy's Ice Cream and Barton Springs and about half my relatives, so you're not all bad.

Oh, and Houston also has amazing food from just about every nation you could think of, we've got teenage spanish fly spots like the waterwall, a world-class theater district and orchestra hall, world-class museums, a world famous rodeo, and a hell of a lot less smarmy politicians walking the streets. Yes we have crime, murder, gangs, and police corruption. But as one of the largest cities in the country, that's kind of like an entry fee (just like Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, etc.).

A quick pro and con Houston tutorial

    by mjgtexas

Pros: (1) No zoning, which lends itself to affordable housing prices. (2) A multicultural choosing of hot Houston women. The Indian women are particularly stellar. (3) Homemade breakfast tacos that come to your work. (4) The first openly (and effective) lesbian mayor. (5) The Heights, perhaps the coolest neighborhood in Texas. Cons: (1) No zoning, which lends itself to building low income apartments and as Lewis Black puts it: "Two Starbucks facing each other." (2) A multicultural choosing of asshole teens who scare off whitey to the suburbs. (3) A line of illegals next to the breakfast taco stand who wishes to jump in your truck cab even though you stressed that you don't need your roof repaired anytime soon. (4) A lack of manners and incessant talking at concert venues, driving Jenny Lewis to stop playing in midsong last year. (5) The Woodlands, a suburb so plastic, vain, and Tea Party crazy that former scarred resident Win Butler released an entire album about it.

    Hope these screenings continue

    by djbmike81

I live in Houston, and as a film buff, I'm not a fan of Houston. Yes, the Alamo is awesome, and I literally live less than 5 miles from the West Oaks Alamo, but with the Angelika closing earlier this year, the only other art house theater seems to be River Oaks, and that venue can only host a few movies at a time. Hopefully I made it in time to get a ticket for Green Hornet. Curious to see Gondry's take on a superhero movie. If these screenings continue, it'll make Houston a little more awesome

    CHOPPAH reviews The Green Hornet

    by the_choppah

Like any good Rogen and Goldberg movie The Green Hornet is best viewed as a platonic buddy romance, and the scenes between Britt and Kato are the best.

I can't give away too many details yet, but I'll say this. Jay Chou is so funny, even without a full command of the language, that he clearly has a big future in the U.S.

Been begging for Houston AICN screenings for years

    by big_daddy_nero

Well, I have heard good things about this flick, and I used to go to the West Oaks ADH all the time until I moved out of Katy, so this is a good chance to get back to it. AICN: Also consider Studio Movie Grill, they do a lot of screenings in Houston as well..

Just read your post. Funny stuff. To wit: Cons: (1) No zoning, which lends itself to building low income apartments and as Lewis Black puts it: "Two Starbucks facing each other." That had me ROFL. Thought about over by the River Oaks Landmark Cinema where there are literally two Starbucks facing each other. Hilarious.

Isn't that often that there is a good screening in Houston. Hoping I got in on this early enough.

Good Luck Nordling, hopefully we can see more of these in Houston soon!

    Houston Alamo Drafthouse Fanboy

    by unblinkingeye

We've had the Drafthouse at West Oaks for almost a decade (and the one in Katy for a few years too), which I have been a fan and referred many friends and co-workers. The location has provided guess like Jim Kelly, Lou Ferigno, and Stephen J. Cannell; beer tastings with Real Ale Brewing Co.; Spaghetti Western with Spaghetti; and many more features in addition to 1st run flicks. I am all for additional screenings at the Houston and Katy locations or for more Drafthouses to open in Houston (North) or for it to move into the now vacated Angelika Theatre in Downtown Houston. AICN and Alamo keep those screenings and marathons (perhaps a half-ass-numb-a-thon to it older butt-numb-a-thon brother?).

    Was Very Surprised

    by hermestrismestigus

Saw the flick at an advanced screening 2 weeks ago, and I can't stand Seth Rogen. But really enjoyed the flick..it was an old school buddy action movie and was pretty funny. In fact I haven't seen a movie that was just fun for I don't know how long that didn't have dark hero angst and wasn't dark and even more dark and depressing.

I've been to Houston a few times and I will say this -

    by professor_monster

The women there are FUCKING HOT! And I mean HOT HOT HOT! Hotter than Austin - Hotter than LA (which by the way is packed with pretty ugly ones - go figure?). Take a stroll through the Houston Galleria and get ready to welcome your dick back from the dead. Ignore the imported fat ass New Orleans blacks and the extremely high quote of Rio Grand tri-atheletes and you'll see some girls that will make you wish you had duct tape and rope in your trunk. That was the first place I ever had Blue Bell ice cream and man, that shit has to have cocaine in it - it's as addictive as cigarettes.

    by spiderdan

You guys should count yourselves lucky to even get screenings! I live in Idaho, where we VERY rarely get screenings, and if we do they are usually ran by radio stations. Ugh. On a side note, I will GLADLY submit movie reviews and host screenings in Idaho (we even have an Imax! ha ha) if someone at AICN wants to set me up! I'll do it for free (okay, for free movies)!

Oh, and we've been named by Esquire as one of the top 10 food cities in America. Suck on THAT, Austin! ;)
