Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!
I’ve been holding on to today’s shot since the very early days of this column. It’s definitely not a candid shot, but it gives such a great insight into the mindset of one of our best actors in one of his most iconic roles.
You’ll see Marlon Brando in full Col. Kurtz mode goofing off for the camera.

And this coming from a guy who just loves 2001. So the pace is not the problem. Maybe it´s just not for me. I respect it and appretiate it, of course, this movie is a monster and the making of is gigantic. It just bores me, sorry.

The buffallo was for a feast for a local tribe, not for the crew of the film to eat. The film crew shot part of the ritual where the buffallo was killed and inserted it in the movie with clever editing.

Spielberg had Jaws and Close Encounters, Lucas - Star Wars, Altman came close with the most output and consistancy, MASH, McCabe & Miller, Nashville, California Straight...but Coppola had 3 bonafide classics, The Godfather, Godfather 2, The Conversation, and one near classic Apocalypse Now... And which is more remembered now? The Deer Hunter or Apocalypse Now? How a brilliant career went so far off the rails is amazing...Robin Williams in Jack, anyone?

However did the resampling job on that did a piss poor job. They should make people earn a license before letting them loose on Photoshop. I think thats the movie that took Brando's career off of the rails...for heavens sake the movie had Robert Forster riding a horse buck naked,full frontal Liz Taylor Nude Scenes (before the fatness set in)...Julie Harris cutting off her nipples & Brando getting bitch slapped with a riding crop...after making a film like this no wonder Brando & Elizabeth Taylor chose to drown the last of there careers in cheesecake & vicodin

For example, Quint's "The Time Machine" talkback was completely hijacked by confused/annoyed people after he titled the post after a very famous James Bond line from, "On Her Majesty's Secret Service". We try to cut Quint slack because he is admittedly young, but you'd think he (and AICN) would be more careful after his repeated goofs.

They should require everyones age to be posted next to their screen name.... I think it would solve a lot of the mystery around the ridiculous problems we sometimes have in here... BTW, I think Apocalypse Now is the greatest Vietnam movie of all time.. With The Deer Hunter 2nd and Full metal Jacket 3rd , Platoon 4th..... All great movies and any sort of order you want to put them in is personal preference stuff. As far as Brando is concerned.... He was always hit or miss with his performances (see Mutiny On the Bounty! (the one where he's Fletcher Christian and Trevor Howard is Bligh) he plays him as a dandy and it's just bizarre) Yet the same man was brilliant in the Godfather, On the Waterfront,Last Tango in Paris...etc In AN, I think he did a decent job being that his character had to be re written every day.... It's amazing to me that Coppola didn't murder him in his sleep to be honest.

For years I have heard the stories of Keitel walking off this picture forcing them to start over with Sheen in the lead role. Has anyone ever seen any of the original Keitel footage? I know Coppola's wife made a documentary called "Heart of Darkness" but I have never had a chance to see it. Do they discuss Keitel at all in her documentary?

@openthepodbaydoorshal : Platoon is one of the most overrated movies around. At the 10th time Adagio for Strings restars over, I felt the urge to turn off the screen. all the other movies you listed are better.

Alien is boring...Apocalypse Now doesn't interest him...calls Jaws tired and lame..the list goes on.. Not surprising his favorite films - Star Wars, The Wrath of Khan, Fellowship of the Ring, Apollo 13 and Raiders of the Lost Ark, while all excellent entertainments, are all like the sweetest desserts on the buffet.

Braindead claims to like those movies you mentioned above - like Star Wars, The Wrath of Khan, and Raiders of the Lost Ark - because not even he has enough guts to badmouth them and suffer the universal scorn he would get. He lies about loving them, because those movies are are as "boring" as the ones he doesn't like, like ALIEN and APOCALYPSE NOW, but there's so much he will admit until he follows what he thinks to be the partyline. I have seen this before in here. For people like Braindead, movies only really started when Michael Bay started to shit onscreen, and those are only the movies he can enjoy.

Always interested me because it seems that he was always trying to find what he was trying to say in the movie through his editing. Is he done with Apocalypse Now yet? I remember in 1981, I was having a re-edit on an original negative of a movie of mine and the editor who did it had worked with Coppola on an edit that he did literally hours before a showing in Atlanta. He told me about how Coppola was constantly experimenting, examining different aspects of the tone and story. He's quite an artist in his work, esp. now. Maybe that's where Lucas got his sense of incompleteness with Star Wars and keeps mucking around with it, "improving it."

His hate of "Shit Trek" has become legendary. Whether you like him or not, everyone knows of his hatred of JJ. I gotta respect that. Much like the ever devoted Star Wars fan who will never give up any opportunity to spew why they love the Star Wars films so much. Asimov never gets tired of bitching about Star Trek.
