Capone lets loose his Best & Worst of 2010 lists!!! Plus a few other honorees…

Hey everyone. Capone in Chicago here. It's the last day of 2010, soooooo…

Wow, I watched more than 400 movies on the big screen on 2010. That's not a record for me, but it's damn close. This was one of the most difficult "Best Of…" lists to compile, because so many of the films in the first 20 or so are separated in my mind by a micro-fraction of greatness. As I do every year, I conclude with my "Worst Of…" list, and it becomes painfully clear that I took enough bullets to save a small army of a medium-sized nation. I also created a new category that seemed necessary. I selected my 10 favorite films that I'm pretty sure never were released in the United States outside of a festival setting but will more than likely make their way into theaters in 2011. Consider that list you starting point of films to get very excited about seeing in the coming year.

I've spared you lengthy write-ups on every single film on these lists--just the first 10 on my main list and only the top choice on the other ones. Oh, and if you think 40 is too many for a Best Of list, keep it to yourself and simply stop reading when you've had enough. Prologue done. Let's get to the lists, and allow me to bathe in your loving reactions!

Best Films of 2010:

How is it that a film with no violence, blood, gore, action, martial arts, grotesque creatures, or perversions tops my list? No, THE SOCIAL NETWORK doesn't have any of that, but I still found dozens of reasons to love it immensely. Aaron Sorkin's writing, the acting, and the steely visual style that director David Fincher has been perfecting for most of his career and has found a completely new and original way of applying it to a film that, at first, may not seem like a perfect match for his abilities. But Fincher loves a challenge, and with THE SOCIAL NETWORK, he set himself the goal of providing a stunning backdrop for his note-perfect actors to deliver fully-loaded dialogue. It sounds simple, but it isn't. And it's the reason this film triumphs. I'm ready to see it again right now. Who the hell cares how historically accurate it is? Fine, let's assume it's 100 percent fiction. Guess what. That doesn't lessen its greatness in any way.

A film that is ripe for intellectual analysis and also contains some tremendous, physics-defying action sequences, a great deal of humor (much of it from Hardy), and a real sense of mischief--after all, this is a story about criminals, technically. And then there's that must-own Hans Zimmer score that has already won an Oscar in my head. I particularly liked the bizarrely (yet perfectly) timed horn blasts that almost sounds like a Tuvan throat singing concert performed at the gates of hell. INCEPTION cleared the decks of a terrible summer for movies and set the bar higher than it has been in quite some time--maybe since SHUTTER ISLAND (see below); one day the two films will make a double-feature that will melt your brain. Every once in a while, expectations are exceeded.

Sometimes, filmmakers put together something that is so strong, so perfect, so abundantly great that they make it look easy, and you wonder why everyone making movies can't produce something this close to flawless. Ethan and Joel Coen's TRUE GRIT is just such a film, an effortless work of perfection that captures a sense of place and period so convincingly that you are taken aback by how effortless it all seems. TRUE GRIT is sheer joy for film lovers, from Roger Deakins striking cinematography to Carter Burwell's lovely score to each and every perfectly cast extra whose dusty, sunken faces add character and authenticity to every scene. The Coens have always excelled at selecting the perfect faces for every role--big and small. The story is hardly a complicated one to follow, but there is so much going on in every scene that it takes two or three viewings to really soak it all in, which I was happy to do.

In 2004, director Debra Granik gave the world one of the best films of the year, and almost nobody knew it. The movie was DOWN TO THE BONE, starring a relative unknown named Vera Farmiga in her first lead role. And while many critics praised the film and Farmiga's work, the film got terrible distribution and the general public barely noticed it even existed. In 2010, the world got the chance to make up for this glaring omission by seeing this equally gripping new film by Granik, based on the Missouri Ozark woods novel by Daniel Woodrell. Again anchored by one of the best female performances of the year--Jennifer Lawrence as 17-year-old Ree Dolly-- WINTER'S BONE also benefits from its desolate setting, which is not just a its own character but an overwhelming, often oppressive force that stands to smother Ree and destroy her world. With only her second feature (which won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance), Granik has again succeeded in diving headfirst into a culture and setting that does everything necessary to set the tone and establish atmosphere. It's an extraordinary work that sometimes feels like a kick to the gut, taking all the wind out of you with note-perfect performances that never lapse into cliche or stereotypes. The people and homes feel authentic, and as a result, the danger faced by Ree feels inescapably real. WINTER'S BONE come out in the middle of the summer, and it was as solid a reminder as their was that good films are out there year-round, you just have to look a little harder sometimes.

This is a devastating work of power, style, and unfiltered tension. It's about the psychological price of personal accomplishment. It's about having your soul crushed and having it set free. And most importantly, it's about the differences between breaking free and being broken. Make no mistake, the almost-constant look on star Natalie Portman's face is fear. The challenge I put to you is figuring out what she is most afraid of. And after you've compiled your list of possible answers, the correct choice is "All of the Above." BLACK SWAN will rattle you something fierce, and it firmly establishes director Darren Aronofsky as one of the greatest living filmmakers of his and several other generations.

Sometimes, when you don't expect something to be truly great, it goes and surprises the hell out of you and turns out to be just that. Director David O. Russell's THE FIGHTER is engrossing entertainment and a triumphant underdog story that is certainly one of the greatest sports movies in my lifetime. For hours after seeing the film, my brain was battling itself trying to figure out which performance I loved the most or what my favorite moments were. I eventually gave in and realized that I loved every second of and every performance, from Wahlberg, Bale, and Leo to the wonderfully scary ladies with the out-of-control hair who played the Ward sisters. The film is as inspirational as it is heartbreaking, as tough to watch at times as it is one of the most watchable films I've seen all year. Prepare to have the earth move under your feet. This is the film that had grown men weeping at Butt Numb-a-Thon, people.

How is it possible that the folks at Pixar keep managing to surprise me? Did I expect to like TOY STORY 3? Well, yeah. What about Pixar or this franchise would lead you to believe anything else? After about 10 minutes, I realized that this third installment in the adventures of Woody, Buzz, Jessie, Mr. & Mrs. Potato Head, Slinky Dog, Hamm, Rex, and those weird little green rubber alien dudes was going to be the best one yet. Let's get the hyperbole out of the way right now. This is the best TOY STORY movie, period. This is the best 3D experience I've ever had, period. And I pity those of you that didn't have the opportunity to see TOY STORY 3 in IMAX, because the opening action sequence alone--which appears to take place in a Grand Canyon-like location--was worth the IMAX and 3D upcharges. More than the other two TOY STORY films, this one's most unforgettable moments are not loaded with chases or danger or humor--although all three are in great supply. The scenes you will cherish are more haunting, mature, the product of the human characters and the audience growing older and able to handle darker shades of drama. This is the gold standard of filmmaking.

Martin Scorsese still has a few tricks up his sleeve. There was never any doubt in my mind that the guy was still in one of the most creatively vital periods of his long career, but that didn't prepare me for what he gives us with SHUTTER ISLAND, based on the novel by Dennis Lehane (GONE BABY GONE; MYSTIC RIVER). Borrowing a bit from some of the great mental hospital-set films of old, with a dash of Hitchcock mind games, Scorsese has given us a true mind fuck of a movie that I think needs to be seen at least twice to be fully appreciated. I'm willing to bet that even if you don't buy into everything that happens in SHUTTER ISLAND, you'll still appreciate Scorsese's kind of crazy. It's so complete and visually warped that you can't help but be impressed. It's tough to go into detail about the film without ruining some of the splendor of discovering it yourself, so I'll shut up and just unwaveringly recommend that you check it out a couple times, if only to be sure you saw what you thought you saw.

9. 127 HOURS
This is a film that is so perfect as both a visceral and sensory experience that it's almost impossible to say anything more than, if you think you can handle watching a guy cutting his own arm off to escape certain death, you're going to love Danny Boyle's magnificent 127 HOURS. Condensed to a 90-minute package of unwasted moments, Boyle hands us not only one of the greatest performances of the year--James Franco as real-life mountain climber/guide Aron Ralston--but also something that goes far beyond simply retelling the facts of Ralston's accident that had him pinned by his arm in crevice well out of the reach of any potential rescue. The movie is meant to shake you up, but not because of the gore. It's the total experience. Both Boyle and Franco are master craftsmen who are giving us the best work of their career, and they put us deep inside Aron Ralston's fractured mind and force us to wonder how we would have held up under circumstances. 127 HOURS is meant to blow your mind, and give you an experience you so rarely get these days in a movie theater. Without resorting to 3D or vibrating seats or whatever, Danny Boyle puts us in that hole in the earth. You will squirm, but you will be a better person for having seen 127 HOURS.

I can't think of a recent science fiction film that felt less like sci fi and more like a quaint love story set largely in the British countryside. But music video director extraordinaire Mark (ONE HOUR PHOTO) Romanek's latest work, based on the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, shifts effortlessly from haunting to tragic to mysterious with such precision that the film is constantly making you question everything you see and hear. The simple fact is that the most shocking things contained in NEVER LET ME GO are presented with little fanfare, and the consequences of bigger questions about what defines humanity and the soul are given much more weight than you might expect or be used to. In the world established in this film, we are not looking at events as they took place. Instead, we are presented with events as they might have taken place if one very crucial medical discovery had been made in the 1950s: a cure for most known diseases--a shift that resulted in the average human life expectancy somewhere around 100 years old. But NEVER LET ME GO isn't overtly about what defines life or humanity, and by keeping events and emotions at such an even keel, Romanek is, of course, demanding that we pay that much more attention to both. Carry Mulligan is our guide and narrator through this story, and even her Kathy seems to understand perfectly what her lot in life is, and it's this accepting that makes us weep for her. NEVER LET ME GO is powerful, crushing material, and you should give it your total and immediate attention.



34. IRON MAN 2

Best Films I Saw in 2010 That Won't Get Released Stateside Until 2011 (I Hope):
South Korean director Kim Ji-woon's latest plays host to ideas and images that have burned themselves into my eyes and brain. These are the building blocks of nightmares, both because of the stylish way the film is shot and the utter distortion of humanity on display. This is one of the few films of true brilliance I saw in 2010, but agreeing to see it may result in eliminating some of the good parts of your soul. The film is set for a limited release through Magnet releasing on March 4, but I really would love to see this roll out for a nationwide arthouse release, just see see how much it messes Americans up.


Best Documentaries of 2010:
It's been too long since a documentary made me as angry at and resentful of the powers that be (or powers that were, in this case) as THE TILLMAN STORY does. In a desperate attempt to create heroes in early days of the Iraq War, the U.S. government and military concocted a story about the death of the most famous man to enlist in the Army and fight in that war. Patrick Tillman gave up a multi-million-dollar NFL contract to fight, and did everything in his power to keep his reasons for doing so a private matter between him and his tight-knit family. But when he was killed during a skirmish (according to the sanctioned story), the Army myth-making machine saw an opportunity to turn the body of this man into a recruitment poster. Knowing that her son would never have allowed such a thing, Tillman's mother, Dannie, tirelessly embarked on a campaign to find out exactly how her son died and how far the knowledge of the nature of his death went up the government food chain. This film is her story.


Best Reissue of 2010 and Possibly of All Time:
I've had many great moments watching films over the years. I'm not necessarily talking about just seeing great movies, but thanks to memorable one-time-only screenings in Chicago or dozens of trips to Austin or living in a New York City for a couple of years, I've had access to some great "event" screenings that make the film I'm watching all the more special. But right now, I'm hard pressed to think of a place I would rather have been in early June than sitting in the same screening room with Roger Ebert watching the most complete version of Fritz Lang's METROPOLIS in existence.

This reissue was either the highlight of your year or it wasn't. You were either prepared to take the journey to wherever this restored film is playing near you or you're not. Roger Ebert called this re-release “The most important film event of the year!” before he ever saw it, but it doesn't take someone with his expertise in cinema to know this. METROPOLIS is a film you must see and acknowledge as a masterpiece before you can even attempt to gain access to the riches of filmed science fiction. The influence and impact this film had on movies that came after it are impossible to count, although I'm guessing that many of your favorite sci-fi works involving a city of the future were touched in some way by this movie. But, that's not the reason to see it. No, you should see METROPOLISbecause it's a powerful piece of cinema by a great director. Amen. The end.

Worst Film of 2010:
The godawful 3D only underscores a much, much bigger problem with this late-term abortion of a film by the often-masterful Andrei Konchalovskiy. This film is so horribly ill-conceived that I am truly shocked it was released at all. Weirdly enough, the movie only seemed to be released (at least in Chicago) in theaters outside the limits of major metropolitan cities. Hope you kids in the 'burbs like crap. If you're one of the great unfortunates who live within driving distance of this movie, please stay far away from it, for your own safety. I just posted my original review about a month ago, so there's no reason to rehash, but this film seems to have been put on this earth to terrorize children and scar adults. I know it may not seem fair to pick on a holiday film, but don't worry, THE NUTCRACKER IN 3D is a shit sandwich for all seasons.

    I was kinda surprised to see Hot Tub Time Machine on there though. It too surprised me when I saw it as not being the piece of shit I expected. I totally agree with The Social Network. I'd say hands down that was the best picture I saw this year! Crappy New Year everyone!

    ...but I kind of have to take issue with "You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger" on your worst list. It's not a top tier Woody Allen film by any means, but its funny and gets a few weird performances out of some high-end talent. And I loved the film's message: only the passively delusional will ever find true happiness.

My top 3 movies of the year would be Inception Black Swan True Grit Another vote for I Saw the Devil... visceral as hell, if not a bit long.

    I was let down by True Grit

    The acting was great and the characters really strong, but the villains were weak as hell and Cogburn and the girl didn't nearly face enough adversity to show their "grit". The whole thing felt like it was going to escalate to that next level of intensity and it never did. Wasted opportunity to really make a western epic instead of just a quaint western with enjoyable characters.

Because if just about any other director (notice I said "just about") had made it, it wouldn't have had a fraction of the aesthetic genius or human touch Scorsese brought to its, yes, relatively derivative, B-movie story. Not to mention that Scorsese drew from DiCaprio the actor's best performance since THE BASKETBALL DIARIES. Yes, actors can be good, even great, no matter the director, but great directors get the RIGHT performances out of their actors most of the time.

    If it were the EXACT same movie by a different director... I know that's not possible, it's a hypothetical. My point is it was NOT that good. The "twist" was predictable (my wife figured it out at the very beginning, I did half way through), the story was meandering hokum. It was utterly forgettable and I don't know a single person that saw it and rewatched it. Overrated -- if I had to guess why I'd say the names attached.

    I have to disagree with any list that suggests Inception is one of the best movies of the year. I remember having a GREAT time watching it in July... but then rewatching it makes it lose whatever charm it had.<p> It completely does not hold up upon second viewing. The buildup and the pacing is wonky if you know exactly where it is going.

  • And I still enjoyed it. Once upon a time, people went to plays and performances knowing that they'd be seeing a "tragedy" or a "comedy" or a "history," i.e., they knew what the end result was going to be. What mattered was the telling. SHUTTER ISLAND worked for me and a lot of others because of how it was told, how it was performed, etc. The ending may have been predictable, but the path there wasn't, and it was some of the best visual storytelling I've seen in years.

    Inception and The Dark Knight

    Nolan took what are basically genre movies, the heist thriller and the superhero movie, and added adult sensibilities. There is nothing campy in either of them. Nolan took the notions of a science that can infiltrate your dreams and a vigilante crimefighter that dresses in costume, and placed them in the real world. Then explored the possibilities and consequences. And I would still not put either in the top 10 of the year. But lets not shit on them and call them overrated.

    They sound the exact same as everyone elses. This is for the talkbackers that feel the need to shit on Shutter Island by the way. Give me something that I haven't heard Winter's Bone being an overrated movie, or True Grit being nowhere near as good as 75% of the stuff the Coen brothers have their names on. I'd have alot more respect for people who throw something on their top 10 that may have not gotten a 80% approval rating on rotten tomatoes.

    I'm not saying that Inception is overrated. Again, I thoroughly enjoyed it the first time round.<p> What I AM saying is that there are other movies that can be rewatched again and again that were released this year that didn't make the top ten.

  • If a writer or filmmaker can pull off a truly great twist at the end of a story, and the movie can hold up on subsequent viewings, then I'm all for it.

    Absolutely right. The ability of a movie to have a twist and then "hold up on subsequent viewings" is critical to having a lasting presence. A second or third viewing allows the audience member to take a very sober look at what made them enjoy it the first time round. Was it just the shock factor of the twist? Or was it something beyond that?

    If you check my comment above my Shutter Island comment you'll see I did say True Grit was overrated, and yes I would add it's not as good as a lot of their other work. Look, I can't help it if Shutter Island was overrated dreck. Did it really come out this year? It felt like it came out two years ago, that's how much impact it had on me. But since the year is ending you'll probably not have to hear about it again.

    An example of a great twist in a movie.


    Faye Dunaway's revelation in Chinatown. You're not expecting it, but when it happens, it shakes the movie and the viewer alike to their very foundations. It elegant binds plot and character, and Dunaway's eccentric and haunted performance until that point comes into sharp focus. Also, it doesn't come at the very ending of the movie, effectively drenching the denouement with soul-numbing cold water. I can watch Chinatown many, many more times.

    Wouldn't you have alot more trust in someone's opinion who has some stuff on their Top 10 list that stands out as something that shouldn't be on a top 10 list? I just find it hard to believe that the same 7 movies are on EVERYONEs Top 10 lists out there. That's why I like a list that has something on it like Never Let Me Go or Shutter Island. These were looked at as disapointments in most critics eye's which shows you that Capone doesn't give a shit about what the talkbackers think about his list. And I guess I'm all alone with my opinion of Winter's Bone. I saw it and liked it. I'd go as far as to say that two people in the movie should get Oscar nominations. But for the life of me I don't understand how this movie is so critic proof. I'd truely like to know if anyone is going to watch it more than 2 times in the next 10 years.

    True Grit was good, but not great

The acting was good with great characters, but the movie kind of meandered aimlessly and stumbled upon key plot points in a very lazy fashion, relying on coincidence and hero-shows-up-just-in-time. The ending was predictable and limp. I liked it, but it doesn't stand up to Inception, The Fighter, or Black Swan.

Forget that it's a remake of a somewhat beloved classic movie starring perhaps the biggest movie star ever and that people may be curious to see how a remake made by some very talented people would stand up to it. Forget all that. It's just a "western," a genre nobody has ever liked, that was recommended by "a critic," and that's enough to put butts in the seat. Braindrain's handle is as apt a description of his/her intelligence as the Harry animation is of the state of this site and Harry's career. CHOPPED.

    Toy Story 3 is my #1 for 2010

    And it's not because I'm a PIXAR fanboy (even though I spent 2 days in August wandering around Pt Richmond, Emeryville, and into Oakland to see the 'Art of' exhibition), but because they pulled it off. They made it one of the most emotional and entertaining '3' films ever. PIXAR did something that Hollywood studios would never dream of doing: they brought 'closure' to the world of Andy's Toys. One can only wonder what would have happened if the Eisner-era Disney had continued with their plan of non-PIXAR-involved sequels. Word was they were planning to do Toy Story sequels for as long as it took, most likely trapping Andy (like Disney had done with Christopher Robin) in neverending childhood. I still have a bitter aftertaste in my mouth after 2007's 'Summer of 3's' that all just sucked royally (Spidey 3, Shrek 3, Pirates 3). But much like Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale said "3 Back to the Futures" was enough, I agree the same with "Toy Story." PIXAR gave the film that put them on the map a fitting ending, as they move on to new adventures.

    My reasons for liking this movie have nothing to do with the twist ending. I'm kinda done with twist endings that aren't that hard to predict. But everything leading up to the twist ending was solid, insane fun. And by the way, there is no such thing as "the exact same movie by a different director." Idiot.     There's little argument that the film is brilliantly shot and incredible to look at. I saw the twist ending coming 5 minutes in (this wasn't my first rodeo), but kept hoping I was wrong or that there was more to it, but that's not a deal breaker in a film like this. For me, the film lost me in the all important third act reveal when it seemed to spend 45 minutes explaining the twist. That's when I wanted to check out. It's still a great film, but not something I want to revisit again and again.

    True Grit = huge disappointment.


    It's a by-the-numbers western and Hailee Steinfeld's performance is not particularly good. KIDS CANNOT ACT. It's that simple. They don't have the life experience to pull it off. Steinfeld did nothing but show good memorizational skills. The way she spits out her lines is obnoxious and overbearing, but I suppose that's how the character was written. The performance just screamed "high school theater" to me. The Fighter, however, is pretty incredible despite some bizarre musical choices and Wahlberg's sleepy demeanor. My top 5 (in no particular order): The Fighter, The Kids Are All Right, Inception, Exit Through The Gift Shop, The Social Network.

    but I'd say my favorites of 2010 were: 1. Inception 2. Black Swan 3. The Expendables 4. Agora Honorable mentions: Iron Man 2, Centurion, The Town, The Social Network, Wall Street 2, True Grit, and Tron Legacy. Basically, for me to consider a film a Top Film of the year, means it needs to be something that I could buy and re-watch frequently over the coming years, without getting bored or tired of it after 4-5 viewings of it. Worst/Most disappointing film would have to be Predators. What a missed opportunity. True Grit was good, but not nearly as great as I was expecting with all the massive heaps of critical praise it has gotten so far. Although, I felt the same with No Country For Old Men a few years ago. I'm beginning to find the Coen Bros. more recent films less enjoyable in recent years. Their most recent film that I thought was exceptional has to be Oh Brother, Where Art Thou.

It should have gotten a major release, while shit like Gulliver's Travels gets all this hoopla and money behind it. As for The Expendables, I grew up on a healthy diet of Rambo, Commando, Predator, and other action films (Missing in Action, Delta Force, Uncommon Valor, Running Man) in the 80's. The Expendables just clicked with me. It is one of those films I would put on my list of films to be stranded on a desert island with.

Also, didn't How to Train Your Dragon come out this year? It may not have the emotional impact of Toy Story 3, but it was nevertheless an amazing work, especially considering it's Dreamworks Animation who almost seem to get off on putting out shit nine times out of ten.

  • This year, more than any in recent memory, seems to have a predetermined list of the best films. will any decent critic have a top ten list without The Social Network, True Grit and Inception on it? Then, to a SLIGHTLY lesser extent, The Fighter, Toy Story 3 and Black Swan? there, now you've just named 6 movies that will be on 95% of the Top Ten lists from this year. (I suppose Winter's Bone will be on a hell of a lot of them as well) So was this a great year for movies? Or was it an average year, but with 8 or 9 undeniably great movies and the same amount of average dreck we're used to, thus making the Top Ten lists all more or less the same? Maybe I'm crazy, but it feels like this year, more than any other I can remember, makes "best of" lists fairly redundant. It's kind of an odd phenomenon. I mean, here's Capone's list: The Social Network Inception True Grit Winter's Bone Black Swan The Fighter Toy Story 3 Shutter Island 127 Hours Never Let Me Go Here's Nordling's unranked list, which I've put in a similar order to Capone's for ease of comparison: The Social Network Inception True Grit Winter's Bone Black Swan Toy Story 3 127 Hours Exit Through The Gift Shop Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Jackass 3D I don't know, maybe I'm crazy, but it seems like this year there have been like 20 good movies, 10 great ones, and a heap of garbage. So, a lot of these lists are virtually the same. The only excitement is who is going to swap 127 Hours for The Kids are Alright, or swap The Fighter for The American. Or throw in A Prophet or Four Lions to show they're cool. Or throw in a decent but not great foreign flick (Last Train Home seems to be the favorite thus far) to show they're artsy and/or politically correct. I also think the Oscars this year are pretty well pre-ordained-- Social Network gets best picture, best director and original screenplay. True Grit probably gets cinematography and adapted screenplay. Inception gets original score. Portman gets best actress, Bale gets supporting actor, Bridges might win if he's nominated for actor rather than supporting actor. Supporting actress for Hailie Steinfeld (I don't think she was a "supporting" anything, but she's fifth billed, so I think the academy would consider her a supporting actress...and it would be a cool win) So am I crazy? What do you all think? And how about you, Mr. Capone, sir?

    Or is it just me? (spoilers spoilers) How does she dance the black swan and white swan finale with a piece of glass in her gut for the black swan and bleeding profusely for the white? And as for the bleeding, they show her backstage pull the glass out, and she gushes blood. Gets dressed in her white swan outfit apparently, no bleeding for the entire finale. And then magically, shes bleeding again and dies. Thats silly movie bullshit. Beat me over the head why don't you. oh wait, already happened when she LITERALLY TURNED INTO A FUCKING BIRD. I love Aronofsky. it's not a bad movie. It's wonderfully made, pretty creepy, incredible performances, all of it. But it made no fucking sense. She just went crazy. That doesn't make her a superhero for the last ten minutes.

    Only saw 30 films this year (and NONE of which were on your "worst of" list, i might add...) and i didn't see 10 great films. Not even close. So here's my top 5: 1. Inception (Not a perfect film, but in this year of epic dissapointments it is most definitely the top film. Big ideas, lots to digest... great execution in terms of acting, editing, pacing, cinematography, etc... A note-perfect ending/final shot. Fucking AWESOME score by Hanz... what's not to like?) 2. Monsters (Underdog pick. Fucking loved it. Perfect tone/atmosphere/ambiance, minimal and realistic dialogue, good performances from a couple of unknowns... and amazing effects considering the budget. Along with a nice score and fantastic cinematography... beautiful film) 3. The Town (Solid film all around with a stellar cast - fuckin Pete Postleelelthwwait! Affleck's confident direction and fluid pacing helped make it a top film contender. However, the relatively simple script and weak ending - a little too neat and tidy for my liking... keep it at #3) 4. True Grit (Quality flick - great performances all around - especially from "The Dude" and the little girl making her feature film debut... Matt Damon in one of his best roles, and Barry Pepper was fantastic with his minimal screen time. However, like The Town, it suffers from a weak 3rd act with too much reliance on coincidences and contrivancies...) 5. The Social Network (Solid, albeit overrated film. Great acting all around - especially from our new Spidey, Mr. Garfield... Great direction and cinematography and a fine score by Trent Reznor. But ultimately a little too derivative and cliche, and lacking any emotional or psychological depth, it fails to make a strong connection with the viewer...) Overall, like last year, a very weak year for film. And don't even get me started on Black Swan... lol Fingers crossed for 2011 :-)

    Predators and Catfish are tied for the worst film of the year. I'd probably lean towards Predators. Catfish just pissed me off more as i expected much more from it... Other honorable mentions would be Youth in Revolt, Edge of Darkness, and Daybreakers. Again, there are plenty of terrible films that i intentionally skipped, i.e. clash of the titans, jonah hex, prince of persia, when in rome, the wolfman, nightmare on elm street, saw vii, skyline, last airbender, etc... so those are just the worst that i have actually seen. Biggest dissapointment? Too many to list! People can yap about how it's the "journey" and not the "twist" that's the point of the movie until their heads cave in, but the fact remains that the film's narrative played as if it was building up to a big reveal. As such, it's a huge failure. I haven't read the book, so I can't say if it's the original story itself that's so obvious, but Scorsese fell into some pretty obvious cinematic traps. <p> I did enjoy the final touch (SPOILER: DiCaprio pretending he was still nuts so that they'd knife his brain and send him into oblivion rather than live "healthy" with his guilt), but it was too little, too late. <p> Shutter Island is a ham-fisted "mystery" which would have been lambasted by all and sundry if made by anyone else than Scorsese. It's a risible effort by one of American cinema's greats. Deal with it.

    I love that line: "Which would be worse, to live as a monster or to die as a good man?" I love that (Spoilatron) Ruffalo's character plays along, essentially helping his friend commit suicide. The twist was weak, exactly the kind of film student "it was all a dream" bullshit that I dislike, but that final scene pulled me back in and I loved it.

Secondly, there is no reviewer comments (braggadocio) that allude to their ability to see every film ever made this year. Third, whether you agree with the choices or not, they are concisely written and reflect the reviewers opinions and not statements of fact, as if the reviewer knows what is best for everyone. This is the first reviewers "best of" lists I have ever read, (EVER!!), on AICN that was not condescending to the readers, that did not make us feel "less than zero" because we, the great unwashed public, could never come close to seeing the number of films the reviewer did. For that, thank you, Capone.

How to Train your Dragon had so much emotion in it, especially when he is first bonding with Toothless. Every moment of Scott Pilgrim, just a joy. Being creeped out by Black Swan and realizing that Vincent Cassell will finally get some western recognition for seducing the audience. The trailer for Your Highness...driving my girlfriend nuts quoting it. The Thin Red Line coming out on Blue ray... the trailder for Tree of Life... sorry...meandering now..

    The Tillman Story is NOT a documentary...

    ... it has a very biased point of view and preys upon our weakest emotions (much like the Bush Administration tried to do in the early parts of the war in Iraq). Bar-Lev created a film with more truth than a Michael Moore "documentary," to be sure, but he gives little to no time or energy to all sides of this story, and how the creation of Tillman as Hero was more the doing of the MEDIA instead of a concentrated effort of anyone in the W Administration or the Pentagon. Bar-Lev is a smarter Michael Moore. He has an ideologically biased story he wants to tell, but he doesn't come out and revel in his ideology as Moore does. But that still means that this is NOT a real documentary. It is a good film, and it does what it sets out to do, make you hate Bush, the military, and what they "did" to this poor family... ... but in doing that, Bar-Lev and his film do an even bigger disservice to the memory of Pat Tillman, because the truth is must less insidious that he has us believe. Again, the media, not a political administration, did more to create the myths, half-truths, and lies about what happened to Tillman. And the absolute WORST thing Bar-Lev does in this film, the absolute and most ISIDIOUSLY EVIL thing that he does (which is totally driven by his anti-military prejudice) is plant the seed of the idea that the military and the men in his unit actually murdered Tillman. For that, Bar-Lev deserves to burn in hell. Bar-Lev doesn't care about Pat Tillman's death, Capone. He only cares how he can USE Pat Tillman's death to promote and advance his personal biases and ideology.

    What a shallow overrated film that is. It's incredibly well made on a technical level, but it's not aiming for greatness and failing to recognize that it doesn't even come close to achieving it make your entire perception of film get called into question. And I'll say it if no one else will, Aaron Sorkins dialogue, while fun, devolves into cleverness that shoots it right out of the range of the way people actually talk. The heralded opening scene of Social network walks right on the edge of Sorkin becoming a parody of himself.

    I watched the movie three time and it just kept getting better. Inception took huge risks and they paid off for all concernd. I highly doubt anyone thought the movie would be as big as it was. I would like to think hollywood would take the lessons from it to heart and mind. 1) Take your time with the screenplay. Even if it takes nearly 10 years. 2) Take your ideas and characters seriously. 3) Integrate the effects into the story. 4) Don't worry about 3-d. 5) Respect the intelligence of your audience. Turns out if you build it, they will indeed come. Congratulations to all involved with the best movie of the year.

    but here is a shuddering thought the biggest grossing film of 2010 was a movie that starred a bunch of over the hill and washed up 1980s action stars. that didnt even have a plot of any kind. Harry knowles didnt even like inception and admitted that he went to the toliet during the movie and hyped and raved about the film with the 1980s over the hill action stars. Harry didnt bother writing a review for inception for months. inception was the best film I saw during the summer. 2010. it stayed atop the box for weeks on end. but the film with 1980s action stars was the biggest grossing film of the summer. and guessed which film Harry liked.

    Worst of the year

    Gamer - culturally offensive to the very people its supposedly aimed at. Scott Pilgrim - never have I hated a film so much. I'm a big fan of Spaced, I love Shaun of the Dead, was indifferent to Hot Fuzz, but I was at least interested in this. The characters are unlikeable, the fight scenes are so far removed from reality as to have no drama to them, and the constant ADD-infested, ultra-super-look-how-cool-we-are pacing just did my head in. I was counting down the evil Xes just to work out how long was left. I simply don't understand the love for it Shutter Island - as said above, the twist is too integral to the story to be so obvious, and while the cast was great, it is essentially just a silly B movie with a crazy overblown score Biggest Dissapointment Iron Man 2 - opening is good. Then it becomes a muddled mish-mash with too many characters, a middle section where Mickey Rouke spends something like 30 minutes looking at a suit, and Tony and Pepper's banter did my head in. Its the definition of a lazy sequel I loved Inception and KickAss. Haven't seen Social Network but that would make the list I'm sure, I do love me some Sorkin.

    dosent mean it wasnt one of the best films of the year. and also shutter island was absolutely fucking spellbindingly amazing. almost anything scorsese does is incredible (except for cape fear, oh god). some movies i didnt see mentioned were 44 inch chest and harry brown. these movies were just absolutely incredible and easily in my top 5. if you havent seen them, watch them immediately. be warned that harry brown is pretty fucked up. and capone, hot tub time machine? really? the doorman was the only funny part. and i love craig robinson and rob corrdry. they werent that good. and a team was awesome. just awesome.

    My Best and Worst

    My best was "The Town". Affleck did some stellar work as both actor and director on this film. I compare it to "Heat", but I found Hamm and Affleck more relatable. Their characters were not just the archetypes of great cop/ great criminal that Pacino/De Niro were in Heat. I bought Doug MacRay and his reasons for robbing banks (him basically having no other skills to make a good living). I loved how Hamm's FBI agent did some good solid police work as well, not just pulling Sherlock Holmes style leaps of logic to figure everything out. Hamm pulled off a quiet desperation under a stoic facade wonderfully. My worst was Resident Evil Afterlife. Paul W.S. Anderson is the worst director, getting a substantial budget, working today. Yes, even worse than Boll. Incompetently shot, acted, directed, and scored. Seriously how much make-up did he slather all over Ali Larter and Milla Jovovich? 6 months after a zombie apocalypse it will be nice to know there are still lots of beauticians around.

Ghost Writer True Grit 44 Inch chest- Micmacs Cyrus Get Low Animal Kingdom Never Let Me Go Leaves of Grass Catfish The Social Network Let Me In Four Lions 127 Hours The Kings Speech I Love You, Phillip Morris The Fighter The Tempest Tron 13 Burke and Hare Conviction The Illusionist The Killer Inside Me The Last Exorcism Monsters Rabbit Hole Red Hill Restrepo A Serbian Film Special The Troll Hunter Tangled So of the movies that I saw, here is my top 15 of 2010...this list might change by the time the Oscar's come around. 15- How to Train Your Dragon= A wonderful, heartwarming story and the finest 3D I've seen so far. 14- The Town= Taut and intense but marred by a slight fizzle in the last ten minutes. Wonderfully directed and acted. 13- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part one= Perfectly paced and expertly directed, this was one of my biggest surprises of the year. 12- Valhalla Rising= The Thin Red Line meets Conan the Barbarian. THE most iconic imagery of the year. 11- The Secret In Their Eyes= One of the best mysteries I've seen in years with the best foot chase since Tell No One. 10- Kick Ass= Intense action married to hilarious dialogue with my favorite Nic Cage performance in years. 9- Toy Story 3= Lovely. Pixar completes this masterful trilogy with one of the most moving parables about growing up I've ever seen. 8- Winters Bone= Ozark Noir and John Hawkes playing a character named Teardrop. Nuff said. 7- A Prophet= A crime saga so dense it feels like a season of an HBO show instead of just a singular film. Powerful and epic. 6- Mother= A Korean masterpice about a mother's love and the lengths she'll go to to protect her child. 5- Black Swan= An old fashioned melodrama with Cronenbergian body issues and Natalie Portman earning herself an Oscar. 4- Inception= Proof that a film can be thought provoking and a blockbuster at the same time. Savor Tom Hardy and Joseph Gordon-Levitt's performances. 3- Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World= If I have to explain myself then I'm sorry for you. 2- Exit Through the Gift Shop= Banksy's ode to the culture of celebrity is either the best documentary of the year or best prank...and I love that I can't tell which. 1- Buried= 90 minutes of tension that could be cut with a knife featuring the best male performance of the year and the best direction. Hitchcock wishes he could have made this. I missed True Grit and Social Network and many others, so I'm sure this list will change eventually, but for now, this is it. Jared Rasic

    Anyone who thinks INCEPTION is a brilliant piece of film-making probably thinks "American Idol" is a great cultural event. INCEPTION only re-inforces my view that Nolan peaked with MEMENTO and has proven several times since then that he is nowhere near as skilled in the craft of storytelling or film-making as he thinks he is. The love-fest for INCEPTION not only confuses me, it disheartens me. If that is what passes for "brilliant" in the eyes of the American public, we are in real trouble.

    INCEPTION: not terrible, just mildly disappointing

    It looked better than almost any other film this year, had a great performance by Marion Cotillard and it was definitely an above-par blockbuster. Its biggest crime was not to make more of what was a very interesting idea. Why did every dream look like a video game? Films like ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND or even UNCLE BOONMEE this year did dream imagery and the subconscious so much better than Nolan. But the hate for the film is overblown just like the praise is. It's not a revelation, just the best big budget blockbuster of the year, well above others like AVATAR or IRON MAN 2.

    It's a straightforward movie about a nut in elaborate therapy. If you haven't figured out he's crazy 10 minutes in you're retarded. He's got a bandage on his head and is having halucinations from the beginning of the movie. Waiting for the doctor to explain at the end isn't the point of this film. And none of you predicted how powerful and fucked up the reason for his insanity was. Perfect movie. The big problem I have with this list is that I've seen social network but not much else on the list. I wasn't what I'd call entertained by it so much as it happened. Solid all around but not much to say other than this guy fucked over his friend for absolutely no fucking reason and now they're both billionaires. Best soundtrack of the year

The film was very easy to work out. once you saw the bandage on leo's head. people may not like or love Martin Scorcese. the departed is the exception in that its his most commercial film,the man makes great looking films and I love his attention to detail. shutter island was no exception.

    SHUTTER ISLAND is utter dreck from one of cinema's legends who simply cannot do horror/suspense. Kubrick could (THE SHINING), but Scorcese cannot. It's not his bag. How SHUTTER ISLAND keeps finding itself on "best of" lists can only be explained byincessant, mindless Scorcese stroking. It's a lazy, surprisingly bad movie. Bad CG, bad green-screens, ineffective frights and a boring, predictable twist, a twist so obvious that it was even revealed by the copy on *the movie poster*. Scorcese tried to do horror/suspense once before with CAPE FEAR. Aside from a wildly fun and over-the-top performance by DeNiro, it's an unintentionally funny pile of crap, and like SHUTTER ISLAND, an unfortunate, forgettable misstep by the great director.

Scenes that are emotional mind fucking can be shot with grace, but since it's "Scorcese" he can do no wrong. Great movie till that point, but 7/8ths of a good experience with 1/8th that gut punches you a good movie experience it does not make.

    I just saw TRON LEGACY last night in 3D and think it deserves to be on any list of the years best. How can you have a list of 40 films and not include TRON LEGACY. I understand why some people didn't like it, but I tended to side with those that found it pretty amazing to look at at least and I loved the soundtrack. You can include somewhere in your list 40 films of the year. Also... I would like to say that I have not seen Shutter Island. But in the trailer when it is mentioned that there was a mystery patient somewhere... a missing patient... I immediately thought, "Leo is the missing patient." So should I still see it??

However, I had skipped some that I could have seen just because I didn't feel like it, like Toy Story 3 and The Social Network. I would wait for TSN but I'm actually still not interested. I'm going to have to force myself to watch it. This week I've seen 3 Oscar bait movies that didn't do much for me. TRUE GRIT seemed unnecessary and I haven't seen the original. RABBIT HOLE was really contrived. And THE KING'S SPEECH was "nice" with an Oscar worthy lead performance. I think I'm old enough to know before I see a movie how I'm going to feel about it, and I could have guessed with those definitely. My 2nd favorite movie of the year so far, is #25 on your list. And my #7 movie hasn't shown up on any list I've read: BROOKLYN'S FINEST. Am I the only person who saw it?

    Killik already said what I was going to say - show, don't tell. That's fundamental to good storytelling, that's how you respect the intelligence of your audience and, consequently, avoid boring them, which I was for most of the first hour of Inception. Seriously, I felt like I was being read an instruction manual. The audience would be better served observing how the characters enter and interact with the dream world than to have it spelled out for them, ad nauseum, before it all happens. And the movie is not that intellectually stimulating either. It was entertaining, hardly illuminating. It did stand out from the crowd, but the fact that it gets an automatic "A" from so many people simply points to what a dud the 2010 summer movie season was. Speaking of which, I saw Scott Pilgrim last month. What a pathetic attempt by Edgar Wright to stay in touch. And talk about characters you can't connect with, and an utter lack of narrative. Was anyone rooting for Pilgrim? A douche with a douchey hat, and a douchey smile who plays in a band that pumps out tired, subgenre bullshit. Yay, go Scott.

    I gotta throw in my two cents on this issue. First, Scorsese is one of my all-time favorite directors. Second, even a bad Scorsese movie is still far better than 90% of most other films out there. However, I'd say Nolan's "Memento" explored the very same idea - a man who chooses to live in a fantasy because he cannot accept his reality - in a FAR MORE interesting way. Ingenious. See that movie again, twice even, and then tell me Shutter Island is a great movie. That A.O. Scott review linked above did indeed nail it. (That scene in the caves with Clarkson (sp?) was fucking endless...)

    1. Black Swan was abusive in just the right ways. Tight, claustrophobic shots, escalating paranoia. No B story. No back story. Just desire heaped upon desire. And Fear. (Do I need to use HTML still or will this line break naturally?) 2. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World was the first live-action movie to the beats of anime/manga right. The humor spoke to me. Every time Knives Chau was on screen my heartbroke for her a little. The music was right out of my teenage years. 3. Winter's Bone gave me the most memorable moments in film this year and the most memorable heroine in film in many years. At one point in that movie, after she gets beaten to a pulp, her response to her tormentors cements her as someone you want very badly to succeed. The finale was difficult to watch. 4. Inception is a movie that works on all levels. If you strip away the dream within a dream structure and heist film aspects, it's an art film about a man whose mistakes in love and life are eating away at his subconscious. Like a deathwish personified. 5. I dunno... it all becomes fuzzy after this. The Social Network was good but played it safe, True Grit was fine but lacked the filmmakers signature, Somewhere was another heap of Sophia, Blue Valentine... I didn't get to see. Toy Story 3 was more of the same but had some fantastic moments, Tangled was nice, but the music number in the bar made me want to die and it was clearly built from other better Disney films. The King's Speech was a good film but I didn't stand up and cheer when it ended. Kick-Ass I liked better upon a second viewing but it's really flawed. Easy A was good, but not even as good as Mean Girls and the end was too neat which was the same problem The Town had minus the Mean Girls part.

    Shutter Island was a decent suspense but not worth a second viewing. The jury is still out on Inception, since I didn't bother to finish watching the film. It just didn't grab me like some of Nolan's previous films.And yes, Bale's performance in The Fighter was the best thing in that overrated film.Speaking of overrated, Black Swan is the instant cure for insomnia. As for IM2, Disappointing? to a fault, but I loved the Monaco scene (sans Rourke's missing legs.) in which Stark dons the suitcase armor with the dramatic/superheroesque music in the background. Oh, and Rockwell's performance was much better than Rourke's IMO.Jeebsus, Jeff Bridges' Obadiah Stane is still the best villian from the Movie series. Both Skyline and Saw3D should be on anyone's top worst. Predators was disappointing to say in the least, but it easily beats out the AVP Shitfest. BTW best new TV Series of 2010: Spartacus, Bitches!

    CHOPPAH reviews True Grit


    Like any good Coen and Coen movie True Grit is best viewed as a platonic buddy romance, and the scenes between Cogburn and LaBoeuf are the best. I can't give away too many details yet, but I'll say this. Hailee Steinfeld is so funny, even without a full command of the language, that she clearly has a big future in the U.S.

    I love the pretentious bullshit "best of" lists on here every year. A bunch of films no one has ever heard of as well as the "must love" fanboy flicks. True Grit and Social Network were good. Shutter Island was ok. Inception was just ok. Tron was fantastic (dare I say future classic?) and judging by the 20 million third weekend it's getting a LOT of repeat business (139 million domestic so far). Toy Story 3 was pretty good. Iron Man 2 was an abomination and one of the saddest sequels to a great first movie I've ever seen. Scott Pilgrim was great...if you're a 14 year old virgin. And I loved the series Spaced btw. Black Swan is basically an exploitation movie in disguise (which isn't a bad thing but let's not call it great art). Hot Tub Time Machine was fucking garbage. Not even close to funny. Just a bunch of 80's references and cum jokes thrown together with no actual humor. I don't know why I even read what "critics" have to say anymore. It usually just proves how completely out of touch they are. Those who can, DO. Those who can't, teach...or become movie reviewers. End of line.......

Neither film was amazing but if given the choice, I would own Shutter Island. Inception was slow, repetitious, done better before (Dark City, Matrix, Dreamscape etc) and had the most poorly edited chaotic action sequences (snow base anyone?) since The Bourne series. Shutter Island has a creepy Bioshock vibe and some strong performances. And True Grit is not nearly as great a western as The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford. Shit, I'll take The Outlaw Josey Wales over True Grit any day. I love how critics are like moths to a flickering light. They all crowd around the same lamps for warmth.

    Black Swan is the most overrated movie of the year

    It's basically what Showgirls would have been if it were directed by David Cronenberg. That stupid scene at the beginning where Vincent Cassel is explaining the story of Swan Lake - no director would ever give a speech like that. Natalie Portman is seriously one note, and I never once believed she had become the bad girl "Black Swan". Mila Kunis seemed to be acting in a different film. I like Aronofsky but this was his worst film.

    Nolan sucks at narrative

    Let's face it - the Christopher Nolan sucks at storytelling. Of course Inception was all wordy exposition giving you a bunch of bullshit rules that are promptly ignored to serve the story. Naturally there are characters like Ellen Page's who have little to no purpose in the badly shot action sequences. Watch Dark Knight again- it doesn't make sense either. It was a magical villain who could do anything at any time, hatching elaborate schemes at the drop of a hat without any motivation to do any of it. Nolan figured he could just throw a bunch of pieces in the air and expect the audience to cobble together a narrative that makes sense. They would come up with some excuse for how the improbable crap he is throwing at them actually works. It excuses him from coming up with a story himself and makes the morons feel smart. But there is no hidden key that unlocks the Nolan puzzle box. The box doesn't actually work - it's just for show - you have to imagine a working mechanism yourself. Nolan can't be bothered.

    Nobody gets the movie

    I figured out that it doesn't make sense, and that fact makes Nolan a bad storyteller. That's the point, fool - the emperor has no clothes, and all the apologists always hide behind "you don't get it." You don't get it either. There's nothing to get. It's too half-baked for that. It's classic "make shit up as you go along" storytelling - it makes up rules and explains them in a clumsy fashion, then tosses them out the window to create false conflict. That's weak. I get the time shift of the reality layers, but it's not thought out well. The shoddy rules they apply to them are set up then abandoned to create a false sense of danger. And Nolan pays little attention to them in any case as he shifts from locations (do the deeper layers feel longer? not really- action on level three seems contemporaneous with two, both of which are completely divorced from "tedious falling van" world). And the falling physics thing is dumb. I would get it if it applied to your actual body in motion affecting the dream bodies, but then should be happening in all layers - but it's not. That's bad screenwriting where arbitrary rules are applied to the convenience of plot. And what of these layers? Conceptually they are weak - especially "bad 1990s video game ski level" layer, where the action is dumb and badly edited. And that yuppie city purgatory level was just sort of ugly and felt flat. Again, why is Ellen Page here there or anywhere? You would think she would be able to create crazy stuff on the fly- but she mostly just sits around explaining shit. The Dicaprio and wife plot is maudlin and weepy and the reveal of her true fate rang false and script-y, character motivation-wise. Likewise, the Cillian Murphy daddy plot was equally wet with cheap emotional histrionics (although all the acting in the film is uniformly very good). Using that Callas song is going to bring a lot of viewers out of the film, because of Cotillard's righteous Oscar win - that's sloppy and pointless. Umm... nice cinematography - but that's not enough. I know the man can make a glossy film - lots of people can do that. It just doesn't add up to anything approaching competence, much less mastery. I get it, I just don't like what it got.

    What a stupid list. Not that your choices are bad, but all you did was take every mediocre to shit movie of the year and put them in a list. Anyone can do that. In a sense it doesn't even feel like one persons opinion, but a statistical gathering of the all "rottens" from RT this year. I mean, if you want to actually have some interest in your list, pick your 5-10 worst movies and give us a quick read as to why. When I look at your list I want to see what you as a reviewer thinks, not just a lazy bunching of every middling film.

    Inception was good, not great though. It seriously had potential to be mind-blowingly awesome, but then we get James Bond 2.0 while a guy floats around trying to tie people together. And despite hoards of clunky exposition, the first act presented a lot of cool ideas and concepts, but the film never really took them anywhere.

Why set up a splashy special effects exposition sequence to set up the rules of the dream world and her ability to bend those rules, then later in the movie have that explanation pitched and reduce her dreamworld power to sitting around asking plot questions? That's basically like having a superhero movie where you tease that someone has a power, but during the action they just hang out making plot points and asking dumb questions. That's bad storytelling. If she built this world, give her some agency or purpose in it. I don't buy "oh, it's a crazy sci-fi dream thingy so anything goes". As a filmmaker doing a sci-fi movie, you have to commit to a set of rules for your world, both in the construction of the concept and in the execution. Saying "if you die in the dream world you just wake up", then suddenly deciding you need some danger in your phony movie plot so suddenly that rule changes to "you will go crazy in an endless purgatory if you die" just sucks. And expecting your audience to fill in the gaps of your concept with vague "it's a dreamworld/ new technology" is spectacularly lazy. Did you buy "the island is magic" on "Lost"? How about "Starbuck is an angel and God did it" on BSG? Why do you think "it's all a dream" is considered the laziest plot device in the universe? Because "it's god/magic/an unknown quirk of science/a dream" is not good sci-fi. You need ideas, concepts, rules for your story. Inane? At least I'm making specific points and not some half argument, an appeal for someone else to make my argument for me, or playing it off like I am just too put out to bother. You can't commit to a point any better than Nolan, so you're evading. Talk about a shallow "surface" reading of the film. You can't see past the surface, so you assume there is a great depth.

    And there's not much to add about Inception. It was truly one of those films where the fans were rabid and anyone who didn't care for it was "too shallow/dumb" or "just didn't get it". How about it was just an average movie and not terribly original. It took previously explored ideas from other film and novels and expanded upon them in an action film. Unfortunately there's no real replay value in it for me. I've seen the first two Matrix films several times but have no desire to see Inception again. It was really slow and tedious at times. I enjoyed it as a one time viewing and that's it. And <halfbreedqueen> I did enjoy True Grit. I'm a Jeff Bridges fanatic. Dig the Coens as well. But as a western, True Grit wasn't the amazing game-changer that some of the critics are making it out to be. Still really good for a western and definately in my top 30 of all time. I'm still reeling from the severe Tron Legacy bashing that a couple of the AICN critics gave it. I've seen the film 3 times with my 9 year old son and it's almost perfect as far as I'm concerned. It's more than I could have hoped for as a sequel to Tron. I consider Tron Legacy an overall better film than the last 4 Star Wars films. That includes the acting, action and visuals. Not a single stumbling CG character stepping in shit to be found.

    I had similar problems with The Dark Knight as you and have been bitching about all that since I saw it. I think where it really lost me was when the Joker inexplicably has that massive pile of money that was supposedly taken to China. They actually make a point of setting up that only the accountant could get to it and probably left the country with it- but no, the Joker gets it. How? Nobody knows - he's a magical villain so we just have to assume he did somehow (fill in the blank, moviegoer because Nolan is NOT omitting the plot information due to lack of coherent ideas - he's challenging you intellectually). But that's one instance of MANY. Good to see not everyone is buying this crap.

    Hey I might not agree with your list but it's great that you ranked Never Let Me Go high up. What a superb film. Bravo for recognizing. I quite enjoyed Sorcerer's Apprentice and Jonah Hex. Maybe I was in a good mood, I don't know, but they're hardly worst of the year. I would've thought Get Him To The Greek would rank higher. That movie had me literally on the floor. I couldn't believe how funny it was. Puff Diddy was goddamned hilarious. I'm on record as saying Inception is overrated, but it actually gets better on repeated viewings. Mostly I guess the story just makes sense to me now. Regardless, it's a great accomplishment.

    Torn Between Winters Bone and Shutter Island

    Capone can appreciate the excellence of Winter's Bone, yet extolls the non-existent virtues of the boring, self-important, fake-emotions of Shutter Island. Not saying it was the worst, but Shutter Island was definitely the most disappointing movie I saw in 2010. And I went to it because of this damn site telling me the previews didn't show the whole movie...then I went and wasted money, only to learn that the previews had, indeed, shown the whole movie. Boo! God, I love Winter's Bone, though. It feels like real life.

    You read my mind in regards to Shutter Island. Enough of this bullshit defending the weak storytelling and atmosphere. What is a mystery-thriller that is neither thrilling, nor a mystery? It's a wasted opportunity. Im a big fan of Scorcese's work but some people have their hero-worship cranked up beyond reason. Let's just call a spade a spade shall we? And I did "get" the bit at the end with him playing crazy and believed it to be one of the few redeeming qualities of the story. Just too little too late. It was either the writing or the directing, because the acting was good. Either way, it just fell flat.

Then HE went to China so nobody could get to him to get the location out of him. This was pretty fucking simple and yet THAT is where it "lost you". The joker simply it ahold of the accountant once he was back and tortured the info out of him. That warehouse was where the money was all along and the joker set it all on fire with the accountant still tied up on top of it. That's simple and logical and yet you couldn't follow it. No "magic", no mystery, just simple storytelling. Excuse me I find it hard to take your opinions seriously. Your comprehension is questionable at best. While Inception definitely had some internal logic issues, half the shit you bitch about was either already explained, or easily discernable with the information given. The Dark Knight was almost perfect, however I do agree with the bit about Batman shooting cars.

    Loved your post about TDK. Overrated flick that is! If you have ANY kind of ability to deconstruct film (ala the amazing Plinkett), than you'll see that the dark knight is in no way even CLOSE to a "perfect film". At best, it's simply "good", if not mediocre. I'll side with the latter... And if it wasn't for the awesome heath ledger, it would be downright poor.

    I agree with you in many respects that "Personally, I liked the idea that it was all a dream, but that the real world was simply the top dream layer", if think DF's review over at Chud is a very spot on reading up to a point... i do not agree that that its literaly an entire dream on Cobbs part, no inception or his job actually exist but, but to a degree i think its more the right way of going about reading inception ....<p>.... but Page & Levitt his kids? Jeez... some early Star Wars like antics going on there then, except they were both aware!? Twisted! Bridges the Darkcity connection furthur back to The Crow!... Did Dom fuck up bad in the end!?
