Would A TRON Holiday Spcial Have Kicked THE STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL's Ass??

Merrick here...

Longtime STAR WARS fans may recall and revile a particularly dark moment in the franchise's history - THE STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL - from back in 1978.

What's going on with Han's hands between 2:03 and 2:13?  Really, now that I think about it, that HOLIDAY SPECIAL kinda portends "The Prequels"  in many ways.

Anyway, Funny Or Die has posted a TRON-themed riff on the same conceit.  And, as horrendous as a TRON Holiday Special probably would've been had one actually been made, this does make one imagine that the TRON Holiday Special probably might've worked out better than its STAR WARS counterpart.   Or, maybe not.

Thanks to our reader Brad for pointing us towards this...

....I had never seen any of that Star Wars special before. While it was kind of cool seeing our favorite characters again after all these years....Blech.....I wish I hadn't. Did Lucas have anything to do with it? Even just approving it would be bad enough. I need to shower now.

I am very happy to inform you that reports of David O Russell casting Mark Wahlberg as Nathan Drake for the Uncharted movie are FALSE. Uncharted 3 game director Justin Richmond confirmed this in a recent interview with joystiq.

I've only seen bits of this

    by James_Camera_On

I' fine it unwatchable after a few minutes. I'm no Star Wars geek but this thing is just a travesty. My understanding is that Lucas was contractually obligated to do this and has over the years tried to destroy all copies and memories of the thing. Too late now. The notion that this anticipates the prequels is a good one. Replace the trader guy with Jar Jar and it might have worked at least as well as the Phantom Menace. I wonder what the 1978 SW holiday special's rating were? Is there a reason the holiday specials - movie tie-ins never caught on? We could have had the Transformers Megan Fox Holiday Special, the Avatar White Guilt Earthday Special, The Inception Dreaming of the Holidays Special. There seems to be no limit to the possibilities. Where did it go wrong?

Lucas had nothing to do with the SW Holiday Special and I read he told a fan in an autograph signing line that he would track down and destroy every copy of it if he had the time.

    by alienindisguise

That special should be used as an interrogation weapon. Even the Fett 'toon sucks monkey nuts. The Holiday special does seem like it's Lucas directed though and will instill a hatred of Wookiees for anyone foolhardy enough to watch the entire show.

The Holiday Special is Like everything after Empire..

    by Cagliostro

Made for kids. As a kid in 1978, lusting for anything Star Wars, it was the bomb. It can only be appreciated in that light. Glad that I saw it when it first aired, it'll always have fond memories.

  • Despite how much he Lucas the production, the HS is still canonical in the SW universe. One HS parallel to the prequels is how the droids are split up. 3PO is with Leia as he was with Padme, and R2 is with Luke as he was with Anakin. This is also basically true in TESB, but particularly in the HS we see 3PO working officially as a protocol droid in Leia's office, in his element very much as he was in ROTS. ROTS is also the only film to return to Chewie's planet as seen in the HS, and Ralph McQuarrie's illustrations for the HS were referenced.

    by darthwaz1

SW and Empire no exception... I know we older fans sometimes forget that, but I was born in 77 and my love of star wars comes from loving it as a kid. Star Wars and Empire have some depth but they aren't exactly Hitchcock movies..

I guess AICN has been busy...

    by Keblar

Too busy with other matters to have come across that as it's been crammed down our collective throats from facebook posts and every other outlet imaginable for the past 10 days, or at least to have bothered posting before now. I'm not one of the innumerable acerbic smarmy schadenfreudians that are too prolific on this site - REALLY I'm not - but if you miss a story, JUST LEAVE IT. Or at least acknowledge the tardiness and inability to help oneself from posting. Crawling up from behind just feels like lame ass 6 o'clock local news filler.

    by tintab

Yes it was crap but...the cartoon was the coolest part of the show and it was the first time Boba Fett was shown. I always hoped they would do the Clone Wars idea back then as a cartoon. Show what happened between ANH and TESP.

I think little more needs to be said about why the SW special exists or why it fucking sucked. Still..I bet they had fun shooting this shit. Getting paid a load of cash and during breaks they were doing rails off Fishers giant fucking jugs while most probably working to make her air tight.

I watched the SW Holiday Special when it first aired

    by GeneralKael

I remember liking the special alot - keep in mind however that at the time I had not seen Star Wars. I read the novelization but when Star Wars came out, I distinctly remember being in a department store and my parents discussing whether to take me or not - they decided not to, but in the fall bought me a Star Wars lunchbox for school. I give the Star Wars special some slack because it was made in the late 70s, when Donnie and Marie were popular and evening variety shows were what was selling(and which were probably fairly cheap to make compared to dramas). Star Wars was everywhere at the time. I remember that there was even a Star Wars themed episode of The Price is Right, which used a winnibego in place of the Falcon(something I feel that Spaceballs stole the idea from) - I remember one of the prizes was the entire line of action figures. I think maybe everyone felt a Star Wars special would be kind of fun and nobody really stopped to think about what it would look like a few years down the road.
