More Details On Disney's TRON UPRISING Animated TV Series!!
Merrick here...
...with a few tidbits on that TRON animated series we've been hearing about.
BoxOfficeMagazine talked with Adam Horowitz - a writer/Executive Producer on LOST. He also scripted TRON LEGACY and is one of the shepherds of the new TRON UPRISING toon that'll show up on Disney XD.
We already know that the show's amazing voice cast will include Elijah Wood, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Mandy Moore, Paul Reubens, Nate Corddry and Lance Henriksen, with Bruce Boxleitner reprising his TRON character, but Horowitz offered further details in THIS piece at BoxOfficeMagazine.
"...we're treating it very seriously."
[EDIT]
He explained that the events of the show will take place in between the events of TRON and TRON: Legacy. "This animated show will take place from when Flynn is in a safe house. It's from when Clu takes over the grid to before when Sam comes in. So if you were wondering what was the grid like before that, then watch the show."
Which dovetails nicely with Variety's previous report report that Wood's character would be called "Beck", and lead "a revolution inside the Grid's computer world."
Hmmm. Could be quite interesting - I wanna see that. Guess it's a good thing Time Warner just bumped Disney XD into HD on our local cable system...

we give a fuck about third string peripheral characters.
-
FIRST?
-
I really liked the new Tron I am down for this.
-
Just bring back that show. No need for a Tron series...
-
If this can be proportionally better to TL like Clone Wars is to the SW prequel trilogy, this could be pretty good. After all the negative reviews on this site, I still liked TL.
-
Wrote Tron: Legacy and was an Executive producer on Lost?
-
The clone wars animated series was one of the worst things I've ever seen. I can't even make myself think about it for long enough to write a decent criticism.
-
I can't argue with that logic. Everyone thinks they've got the next Boba Fett.

I don't know if I'd call Tron a "peripheral character" in Tron
by ChimpanzeesTalk
Idiot.
-
Are you talking about the 3 minute shorts from years ago or the current Clone Wars? If the former, those were very hit and miss. If the latter...well I guess those have been hit or miss too. But the good ones have been better than the prequel movies by far.
-
So i guy names beck leading a revolution from the inside? hmmm...sounds like another Beck i know!
-
But i had to look it up!
-
...Is it that dude with two turntables and a microphone?
-
Hmmmm...
-
wasnt the GRID destroyed by the end of TL? whats the point of this animated series then? and now that the film has turned out to be a big flop, are Disney supporting this cartoon fully or they are just showing the already created material (the toon was in production a long time before the film's premiere) before they can the whole property permanently?
-
Tron Legacy kicked ass so this should be fun. My main criticism was the massive under-use of the film's titular character. I'd like to see him battling CLU or some $hit like that.
-
The film's making a ton of dough . . does a film need to make $100 million its opening weekend and go on to gross a billion dollars to be considered a mild success these days?
-
"wasnt the GRID destroyed by the end of TL? whats the point of this animated series then?"<br><br>I haven't seen Tron:Legacy yet but i did read the article above which read:<br><br>"He explained that the events of the show will take place in between the events of TRON and TRON: Legacy. "This animated show will take place from when Flynn is in a safe house. It's from when Clu takes over the grid to before when Sam comes in. -
It was more "Tron" than Tron ever was.
-
This should be really fun. I would love nothing more then to set a series recording on my DVR for a motherfucking Tron cartoon. How cool! Seriously, when the hell is this cartoon going to air? I have Disney XD in HD too!
-
I went with my buddy and took my 9 year old son. We all loved it and as we walked to the car from the theater, my son asked when we could see it again. He's NEVER done that before. My girlfriend's 10 year old hasn't stopped talking about TRON since last friday. The kid is obsessed with it. This movie did exactly what it set out to do. Become Star Wars for a new generation. So the vocal minority that is slamming every second of this movie needs to give it a rest. TRON is a winner for the intended audience. And as an adult, I think it's a very intense, slick and sometimes moving film. When Kevin Flynn says "So long kiddo" at the end, I felt a tug on the heartstrings. The disc battle and Light Cycle chase was JAW DROPPING and better than any action scene I've seen in years. Well edited with asense of geography and danger. Eat it Michael Bay and John Favreau! Even CGI CLU didn't bug me. After seeing the trailer for The Green Lantern, if CLU bugs you elitist pricks, you're gonna hate the rubbery animated cast of aliens in Green Lantern!
-
Expand the TRON world and push the fucking Clone Wars away for good! If you count the movies and both animated shows, we've had over 40 hours of Clone Wars stories. Give it a rest Lucas. No one cares anymore. I'm ready for something new and fresh and I think ths new generation is as well. And yeah, I found Inception pretentious, repetitive and boring. The editing during the snow base scenario was hoffific and almost unwatchable. Like Michael Bay took over the last 30 minutes of the film. There was nothing in Inception that the Matrix didn't do better a decade ago. And I have no need to ever see Inception again. Tron Legacy will be a MUST OWN on Blu-ray as well as the definitve show off disc when people come over.
-
Most enjoyable big budget sci-fy movie in YEARS AND YEARS. But the tv show is a prequel? Fuck. I am so tired of prequels.
-
I wasn't referring to TRON as a peripheral character, although the writers turned him into one in a film bearing his name, I was referring to the black guy with a scar on his face. I didn't walk out of the theater consumed with a desire to learn the origin of the scar - I just assumed he got it on the game grid. Do we really need that story or is this Jack's Shepard's tattoo all over again? Reading is fundamental.

No. Sam saved a copy at the end before talking with Alan.

Elijah Wood is really coasting now, isn't he?
by CHRISTIAN_BALE_TRASHED_MY_LIGHTS
Since the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, he's really not done much at all. Other than EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED, SIN CITY and ETERNAL SUNSHINE most of his movies have been pretty sub-par and now he's resorting to voice acting in cartoons and video games. I guess it's still work, and so at least he's doing something, but his star seems to have fallen quite swiftly... Perhaps he's the new Mark Hamill?
-
The first review was so vague that I couldn't even tell if he really liked Tron Legacy or just the IDEA of Tron in general. Half the review was written about seeing Tron as a kid. The other half was scattered thoughts about Legacy with no real details on what he liked/didn't like. I thought it was 100x better than I expected. After reading these boards for a week I expected a film worse than Bio Dome. What I got was a home run that honors the original movie while updating the look and style. Tron Legacy will definately become a classic.
-
I have been torturing myself with anticipation for the movie, then when the reviews came out I nearly didn't go. Another terrible reboot, I assumed. Then my friends insisted I check it out-- it was fuckin' GREAT! It was an old-school sci-fi movie, which means it's more about cool visuals, ideas, action than characters and plot. It means weird things will happen that characters have to explain. And it's extremely fun and cheesy. Kind of like a similar movie from the 1980s. (spoilers:) My only suggestions would've been to make all the programs 'digitized' like CLU-- to be consistent. And Tron should've changed color the moment he said, "I FIGHT FOR THE USERS!" Otherwise I just loved it. The Matrix can shave Tron's balls.
-
That was the one thing I didn't enjoy-- I think the 3D effect looks shitty, and actually takes you out of the story-- especially toward the end. Some critics said the 3D was the one good thing in the movie-- for me it was the one annoying thing. Stick with 2D.
-
Don't forget about Green Street Hooligans. If you haven't seen that movie, check it out. I'm not a soccer (football) fan at all and I loved this movie.
-
I really didn't like GREEN STREET HOOLIGANS. I'll admit that Elijah was pretty good in it but the movie itself left me cold. Which is strange because the director also made PUNISHER WARZONE which I love.
-
A vocal powerhouse like David Warner played the villain in the original film, and is still alive, and they're signing up Paul Reubens instead?!? Bad form. I admit that Lance Henriksen almost makes up for the oversite, but not quite.
-
interested in the property.Jeff invited him to return for TL but he refused.
-
maybe they're subtly trying to ride the coattails of The Dark Knight Rises? or maybe I'm looqing into it too much. Anyway, I love the cast line up, and I would love to hear chriqui in this so it can counter act the utter disappointment of The Crow Wicked Prayer which she participated in.
-
One of those actors that no matter what he does I seem to always find irritating. Maybe his voice matched to an animated character will be tolerable though.
-
They ought to find a way to incorporate him somehow. BTW was there not a Sark figure in Sams bedroom in the beginning of TL?
-
this better not be in 2D. Tron IS 3D.
-
Seriously. you can't really get more subpar than the film. I didn't hate it..but I want it to dissapear from sight and memory already.Like the GOLDEN COMPASS.So talk of a waterdown, kid friendly ANIMATED spinoff makes me wanna groan. Except I don't groan. I wait patiently for Harry to make sense of his bewildering post on Kevin Smith.

It seems like every franchise these days has prequels clinging to it like bloodsucking leeches. Hey idiots, if you have an interesting story that continues the narrative then tell it! Don't tell me about Grandma Trons adventures in in a tape drive on a Vic 20, or the thrilling tale of how it was decided that the dominant fashion colour should be blue. And Tron and the Grid are gonna be the main character and setting and presumably he'll have adventures, some of which will put him in peril? Guess what assholes, since I know his eventual fate any scene will have zero dramatic impact. Same with any story that threatens the Grid, any plan to thwart the rise of Clu, any scheme to contact the Users! Argh! Either continue or end the story, that's your role as a storyteller. Don't bash me to death with your franchise.

What's sad is this will probably get more attention on this site than Game Of Thrones will.
by castor778
The AICN staff will probably be swimming in shit to get any info about a fucking Tron TV series, but HBO is about to unload one of the best shows we've seen on TV in a long ass time - and we'll keep getting "haven't read the books" and lame ass remarks barely acknowledging it.

I take it that AICN is doing a big renovation???

'The Matrix can shave Tron's balls". Bravo. I need a new monitor now.

It'll be interesting to see if there's enough interest to sustain a Tron spin-off cartoon series. I like that Disney is trying to develop slightly older brands with appeal to boys, but I note that they've already moved the truly fun Avengers cartoon off of primetime Disney XD in favor of more of those god-awful live action "Saved by the bell" style sitcoms for children that clog up the regular Disney channel. I don't know that Tron is going to pull in more audience in that age range. Cartoon Network could probably make a show like that work, but then the audience is already there... You just have to avoid turning them off. I don't know that enough people switch channels to hunt out a Tron show. Speaking of the Avengers, it's a shame it didn't secure its primetime place, because it really is a lot of fun and a great introduction to the entire Marvel property that Disney bought for a few billion. Of course, my cable company doesn't even get Disney XD, so I only watch it on YouTube anyway. As for the Clone Wars, even though I keep hearing about how good it is, I only seem to be able to catch truly awful episodes when I give it a try. More bullshit from the prequels about Padme in the senate which is about as exciting as CSPAN with worse acting, or I catch some kind of child empowerment episode with spunky young characters defeating villains which are supposed to be menacing. Now, that 2-D Clone Wars cartoon actually made Star Wars seem kick-ass again, with villains who were truly scary (until the prequel films ruined them again.) I still love cute-as-a-button Shaak-Ti and that Hammerhead guy fighting Grevious for an entire episode. That was awesome.

by buggerbugger
It's the journey what counts, not the destination. If you're only interested in the destination of a story and its characters, you should probably just skip directly to the last chapter of the book or last ten minutes of the movie.
-
I'd like to hear the British viewers' take on it.
-
as this has happened every year of the series, i believe that showtime is doing it in order to get buzz for the show and addison timlin has spectacular 19 year old boobies

Can we get a thread for DOCTOR WHO, Herc?
by CHRISTIAN_BALE_TRASHED_MY_LIGHTS
Pleaaaaaaaaase?
-
I suggest contacting Herc on twitter and asking directly.
-
a Doctor Who thread. As the go to guy for all things having to do with television on this site, he should have set it up this afternoon. For the first time ever, a Doctor Who episode gets broadcast first run on the same day in the UK and the USA and this fucking site doesn't have a thing about. Oh, that's right. Like everything else on this site, he'll get to it in about a week, when its old news. That's why this site has gone downhill over the last five years and why so many of us have jumped to slashfilm and hitfix. Better sites altogether.
-
When I was in LA a few months ago, I visited my friend at Disney Animation. He showed us an HD clip of TRON Uprising. Visually SLICK.
-
Anyone know if it will be no there eventually?
-
that was indeed a great who xmas... mr gabon makes a heck of a scrooge
-
Is Lance Henriksen voicing Kevin Flynn (and maybe CLU too)? Paul Rubens is Caster? Just throwing out some guesses.
-
I assume they're saving him for an appearance in the sequel to Tron Legacy, if Disney of course greenlights one. (As for the sequel's premise, I think it's fairly obvious it would feature the Grid world invading the real world -- imagine Recognizers raiding through downtown Los Angeles.)
-
Or: Tron Beyond The Grid, or maybe just Tron Beyond
-
Dropped down to third place this past weekend, under Fockers and True Grit. It's gotta do major business overseas if it's to break even. Too bad.

Memo to naysayers: Tron Legacy has already made $150+ million
by Prof. Pop-Cult
Check out its daily updated entry at boxofficemojo. The movie is well on its way to breaking even on its $170 mil budget, and will do so by New Year's weekend, perhaps by Wednesday. Also consider: There will be no major movie releases this New Year's weekend. The next major genre category movie release will be January 7, Season of the Witch. But the next major movie that will be in 3D will be The Green Hornet, the following weekend. This means, Tron Legacy has the next week to two weeks to sell tickets to this genre demographic. And Tron Legacy is also in IMAX 3D, which will help give it legs for its total overall box office for the next 6 weeks. Tron Legacy is in no way the next Avatar, but Avatar was a unique situation and truly a ground-breaking movie. It was in its own category, and the box-office performance of Tron Legacy needs to be evaluated on its own, not compared to Avatar or another movie. The fact is, the movie *will* make a tidy profit for Disney -- way before it leaves theaters domestically and internationally. But the ultimate question will be whether it will make enough to warrant a sequel -- Tron Legacy itself cost $170 million and frankly that figure strikes many as too much for what it is.
