This is not a boat accident! It wasn't any propeller, it wasn't any coral reef and it wasn't Jack the Ripper. It was The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!
As the year winds down I find myself going over some of my favorite movies and figured I’d have to include a picture from Jaws… especially since the celebratory 35th Anniversary article on Jaws, with a ton of behind the scenes images, is what planted the seed of this column to begin with.
So, here we have a nice shot from my favorite film, with the crew filming Bruce off the coast of Matha’s Vineyard. Correct me if I’m wrong, but that looks like Spielberg actually manning the camera off the bow of the Orca, doesn’t it?
The photo comes from reader Steven Johnson and originates with an upcoming book JAWS: MEMORIES FROM MATHA’S VINEYARD, which sounds amazing… it’s an account of the filming from the locals on the island comprised of personal photos and even comes with a DVD featuring 8mm home movies of the filming. If I get a chance to check out that book you better believe I’ll review it here. It sounds like Edith Blake’s Making of Book that came out upon release, but times a thousand. Check out their Facebook page for hopefully more teasing pictures! Click for a Super Sized Version!

Tomorrow’s pic begins our Christmas themed BtSPotDs featuring classic Christmas movies. Featured is a cowboy and an exceptional thief. See you then!

I'm trying to think of any recent movie that compares to JAWS, in sheer entertainment and exhilaration... Anyone?
-
Those pesky New Englanders.
-
Not as suspenseful as the first but there were some nice quality kills!
-
Just so you know. Bishes.
-
Where is it?
-
It's hard to tell, because the picture doesn't blow up, but it does look like Spielberg. The man behind him looks like the DP, Bill Butler, followed by the regular operator, Michael Chapman (DP, Raging Bull). I've seen other BTS pictures with Spielberg and Butler wearing those clothes, on set.

Under the pic on the right there is a "Download in High Resolution" link.
-
Thanks for the link, lappe767. I'm pretty sure that's Spielberg, behind the camera.
-
...notice the upside down red boat? Looks like they are filming the Estuary victim's attack - severed leg with tennis shoe and all

Sad & missed opportunity! Crashed Server or No Crashed Server! Out of HARD DAYS NIGHT, HELP, YELLOW SUBMARINE, HOW I WON THE WAR & MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR, You guys could have come up with something to honor the man. HARD DAYS NIGHT is a CLASSIC! This goes down with the lack of an Ed McMahon Obit! :(

Spielberg holding the camera, Butler behind him, probably asking for him to give it back.

It's Spielberg holding the camera, here's how I know:

there's another closer photo of him wearing the same jacket and jeans...that's how I know. i think it's the one where he's in the mouth of the shark, smiling.

I'm all for remembering John Lennon and his death was a tragedy. But to be honest, I'm getting a little sick of the deification of John Lennon. Dude wasn't MLK, he was just an entertainer. And he wasn't even the most talented Beatle, Paul was.
-
is not some kind of milestone...sure we miss him, and we hate how he went out, but let's find something serious to bitch about
-
Best Christmas movie EVER. The best work, IMHO, of a number of people -- McTiernan, Rickman (and that's sayin's something), and Willis too. "Come out to the coast; we'll get together, have a few laughs..." Classic. Merry Christmas, all.
-
Looks like Teddy Grossman hanging onto side of Zodiac.
-
Love this shot! From this distance and resolution, it looks like they're filming a real shark to me! More of these please! :) p.s. People need to shut the fuck up about BTS Lennon pics. If you love the guy (as I do), then go and celebrate his life in some other way. Stop wasting your time bitching that a movie website didn't put a picture of him up on a certain date. John would think you were a right dick!
-
Wrong. Spielberg is operating.
-
It was a lucky day.
-
yet people still were swimming and playin in the water in that movie and then they cry when they see a shark.
-
I wouldnt change any of it. As for Lennon - Miserable excuse for a human being and a nasty piece of work.
-
Amazing how low-rent the behind-the-scenes Jaws stuff looks. One young director shoots handheld footage of a robotic shark that doesn't work, and turns it into one of the greatest movies of all time. 35 years later, he has hundreds of millions of dollars, his own studio, and infinite special effects at his helm, yet can't turn out anything better than Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
-
on tmz they said that spielberg chose to keep the sharq filmed the way it was beqause it kept malfunctioning and he couldn't show it too much....don't know how accurate that is but if so then spielberg should be kissing his csulb late graduating a$$ because I dare say it wouldn't have had as much impaqt if they showed Jaws more in the fliq.
