H.R. Geiger On The ALIEN Prequel??
Merrick here...
I'm not exactly sure how to credit the following information, so I'll just throw it all out there and let ya'll sort it out.
THIS article, presented in German, apparently contains a quote from H.R. Geiger's wife (Carmen Scheifele) in which she reveals that Mister Geiger is reteaming with Ridley Scott for the upcoming ALIEN Prequel (prequels?). Geiger, obviously, was hugely instrumental in creating the "biomechanical" vibe of the titular creature (as well as other settings) in Scott's 1979 progenitor movie.
I don't speak German (if you do, and if you're actually able to post in Talkbacks at this point, please feel free to provide a pointed translation in the TBs below) - so this detail is per THIS interpretation over at AvPGalaxy, which was initially referenced in THIS piece at ComingSoon.
This development feels highly probably, but there's a margin for error here so I'd suggest treating it as a rumor until we learn something more concrete...

Space Jockeys!? FTW?

not Geye-gerr. I found out years ago.
-
Scott should do whatever it takes to get him on board.
-
New talkback meme? "We have some highly probably information that Shia Lebeouf will be the lead in Episode 7!!"
-
Unless he's going to check for radiation levels in and around the electronic equipment, but I bet H. R. Giger will be. Afterall, Giger is the swiss artist who designed the original Alien creature. I don't know who this "Geiger" person is.
-
Unless he's a device to measure radioactivity.
-
I must have been typing it at the same time. Great minds....
-
That reminds me of when there's a news anchor thats of Latino descent, and between speaking with a perfect American accent will stop and over-pronunciate a name or word with a spanish accent if it's of hispanic origin. <P> "Good evening, I'm Christina MEN-DOH-zah with eyewitness news. Tonight our top story is the controversey regarding Oh-skar dey-LA-HOY-a...."<P> Gets me every time.
-
God, I really, really, REALLY hope so. Alien would not be nearly as amazing a film if not for this man's mesmerizing design architecture. Between his design and Ridley's direction, I could watch the original movie - hell, I HAVE watched the original movie dozens of times. Pure magic.

Ihr Mann sei “on board”, also dabei, sagte Scheifele. Es werde sicher einen 3D-Film geben, wahrscheinlich aber zwei. Geplant sei ein Prequel, das die Geschichte vor dem ersten Alien-Film erzählt. TRANSLATION Giger, creator of the Alien creature for the ’79 Ridley Scott film will again team up with the director. This is confirmed by the Swiss artist’s wife Carmen Scheifele in an episode of Glanz & Gloria on Swiss tv. Her husband is ‘on board’ says Scheifele. There is definitely going to be ONE 3d-film, perhaps TWO. A prequel is planned that will tell the story of the events prior to the first film. A note The final sentence is a bit difficult to translate. The word 'Geschichte' means 'story' and 'history' as well. However in this context it means 'story'. And literally the sentence would be: 'Planned is a Prequel, that [depicts]the story before the first Alien film'. Hope this is helpful.
-
the movie will be brutal and nasty, the movie will be set in 2085 about 30 years before Alien.
-
that's a must. The only gripe I had with Aliens was (and trust me it's hard to find a gripe with that film) that Cameron redesigned the Xenomorphs ever so slightly. I preferred Giger's shiny chrome dome look to their heads. Cameron designed them with small indentations. Small gripe, but all the same.
-
with the look of the jockey "growing" out of the seat, or vice versa.
-
I'd be surprised if Giger wasn't involved

Someone in charge of a movie's production seeing sense for once! Consider me interested.

at what the concept artists they hired cheap are doing. They'll tell the artists not to pay any attention to what he says and just humor him. At least that's exactly what they did with Syd Mead on Tron Legacy. If you're listening Syd- that's what that shrimp director said 2 minutes before you walked in to look at the designs. Funny how nothing was really better or added anything new to the Tron universe and the costumes for many characters paled to the orig They can hire a kid out of art school and pay him cheap to add a cool, hip accent to giger's designs and they most likely will. But then Ridley is not the Disney machine so who knows how he'll handle it.

HR Giger, creator of "Alien"figure for the 1979 film by Ridley Scott will be incurred once again work with the director. This confirmed the wife of the Swiss artist, Carmen Scheifele, in the TV show "Glanz & Gloria" on Swiss television. Her husband was "on board ", that is it, "said Scheifele. It would certainly be a 3D movie, but probably two. The plan is a prequel that tells the story before the first Alien movie.

He's standing right over there.....

HR Giger, creator of the “Alien” - figure for the 1979 film of Ridley Scott, developed, will co-operate again with the producer. This confirmed the woman Swiss of the artist, Carmen Scheifele, in the transmission “gloss & gloria” Swiss of the television. Their man is “on board”, thus thereby, said Scheifele. It will give surely a 3D-Film, probably however to two. A Prequel, which tells history before the first Alien film, is planned. <p>the woman swiss, the woman swiss!

Ridley, don't forget to get the winner of Academy Award for best screenplay this year to take a pass at the script. These "moves" will calm the investor doofuses. Oh, and play up the FAMILY angle. The investor doofuses love that part.
-
here goes... Mount Geiger created in 1979, Ridley Scott's Script "foreign" reunion with the director. The artist's wife, Switzerland, Carmen stsheifele, shows "Law Glanz and Gloria" has been approved by the Swiss television. And, of course, called to say her husband stsheifele "the Commission","A 3D movie, but the two projects for the transfer, the film tells the story of the first foreign. Happy to clear things up.....

A startling discovery has been made in the uppermost reaches of the UK. Teams of cultural forensic experts have ploughed up permafrost at a farm in the lower Hebrides, where 16 minutes of colonic evacuation believed to have been deposited by the deceased auteur director Stanley "Caked" Kubrick has been discovered. In a tense five hour operation, cinematic archaeologists were all in a tizzle, overjoyed that such a hidden mother-lode could be discovered in such an unlikely place. The director of MOMI, who was on hand to carefully manhandle the dessicated blow-out, praised the teams thoroughness, fine tooth combing every scatter shot particulate, saying this is probably the least known work of Kubricks, and there is no doubt he agonised over this one, at least as much as all his other celebrated works.

I piss blood all over this movie. I might rent it if I smoke some crack and drink anti-freeze for three days while shoving ginko biloba pills up my ass.
-
Do that mr Scott and i will be the first one in the world to buy tickets for the movie's premiere.
-
Makes total sense for Ridley to get him involved again. His visual style was Ridley's inspiration in the first place. I'm still not sold on delving into the whole backstory of the "space jockey" from the first film but with this talent involved it's a must-see.
-
I'm slightly impartial lol. but have been waiting for this news since the prequel was announced. Even if its crap there will be a nice art book at the end of it with some new Giger designs so it's all good for me. I think the Alien films play better to us Europeans anyway (box office seems to back this up) Maybe we are more open to that hard Science Fiction Metal Hurlant thing they have going on lol.

Is that true about Syd Mead on the new Tron? If it's true, obviously you had something to do with the art department, but maaaann.... that is fucking sad and totally disrespectful. Syd Mead is a genius... as are people like Giger and Ralph McQuarrie. Are there any up and coming concept artists in that league? There's that one guy who has that 'Please hire me Neill Blomkamp' website, and he's got a couple or original pieces that I like, but the other people I mentioned are artistic giants in my book. Most of the stuff today feels like something from the cover of a role-playing game book, rather than a unique and extremely detailed vision.
-
I laughed!
-
Fix the typo. His name is spelled GIGER. Pay your respects and do some fucking research before your fat sausage fingers pound out another awful post.
-
and some newer concept guys doing stuff that would fit into the Alien universe: Carlo Arellano, Ryan Meinerding, etc...
-
alien 3 SUCKED, pass it on
-
It's almost too easy sometimes. It's like a high-school kid and his buddies made they very own fanpage, and we're all like "Hmm...Well it's a good start, but you spelled 'Giger' wrong. Make sure to check your sources and use a dictionary or else no one will take you seriously." But I guess that's exactly what's happened to this site isn't it?
-
I can troll too, bitches!
-
Agreed. Ridley Scott is the sole reason this film has only the slightest chance of not being dog shit, like everything else connected with this franchise post 1986.
-
Thus, I pronounce myself the coolest guy on the Internet.
-
H.R. GEIGER? Do you guys post from your cell phones? do you even bother to google anything or proofread? Do you even care? Do you realized how much credibility you lose when you profess to be a "movie nerd" site but can't spell one of the people you hold in high esteem right? I mean, a post or talkback? Sure, thats just off the top of your head. But in an article please just take a few extra minutes to raise the quality by 100% I am frankly surprised anyone in the movie industry even takes this site seriously. They obviously don't peruse it, their handlers just tell them to "please talk to AICN" The forums here are full of knowledge and good ideas. Hell, the ideas for "Predators" were gold, and the movie criticisms (in the TBs) are usually valid. But those running the show are no better writers than some of the trolls.
-
Ironic post of the day.
-
I watched the original Alien waay back in a first run on HBO; it creeped the shite out of me. I am sure that Giger had a ton to do with that. I really hope that this prequel sets a high-water mark for what has been a HORRIBLE idea by most accounts. The 3D thing scares me....but I am hoping that the substantial braintrust here delivers.
-
MJs_Cold_Dead_Pale_Corpse LIVES AGAIN

Right on, Utamoh.

It's actually pronounced GHEE-GRRR. Good grief, people...watch a little BTS of Alien before you post. Do a little research...I find it inexcusable that all of you people have access to a computer, but you don't take advantage of it except to post sarcasm & drivel on an entertainment news site... ...and seriously, Merrick? You haven't corrected the title or body of the article yet? I'm disappointed. One more time for clarity... "H. R. Giger" or "Hans Rudi Giger" Pronunciation: GHEE-GRRR Class dismissed.
-
Thanks. Up to now, I've been pronouncing it "JAI-JEER". Would've made that one hour oral presentation on his work I did more understandable.

What. The. Fuck?

Haven't logged in here for ages, but this has bought me back
by Lost Jarv
Anyone remotely think this prequel is a good idea? Seriously? <P> Fuck this film- we need Neil Marshall directing Alien 5. Survival Horror set on ruined Earth after the Auriga crashes.
-
And this people call themselves movie geeks? What an epic fail as a movie geek! Small wonder ABRAMS TREK got so much love in here, due to this example of crass ignorance!
-
PASS. I couldn't stand that over-praised P.O.S. The Descent. Shit, i preferred his first film "Dog Soldiers" to The Descent... Seriously guy, Neil Marshall? Over Lord Ridley??? That's just crazy talk, man...
-
Yes, i think this could be a "good idea", Jarv... It's fucking RIDLEY SCOTT. You know, the director of the ORIGINAL FILM?? The only problem i have with this project is the Uber-Hack, Damon fucking Lindelof is in charge of putting this shit on paper. That scares the living crap outta me. That Moby lookin' bastard ruined the best show on TV. I'm crossing my fingers for this one...
-
Sorry, I will disagree with you on The Descent. The tension and claustophobic atmosphere he generated was excellent. If you want to question how two of the women became warriors supreme, I can't argue over that. Generally, it's a fault of that genre...always a hero who somehow fights back. Dog Soldiers is quite good. No argument there. Centurion I quite enjoyed. For me, on par with the previous two films. And while in the minority, I really like Doomsday because that movie is just pure fun for me. So yeah, I wouldn't mind seeing a Neil Marshall directed Alien movie. And NOT a prequel.
-
Sorry bro, gonna have to respectfully disagree with you on The Descent. You said that The Descent featured "tension and claustophobic atmosphere". I tell ya, i keep hearing that from people but i absolutely do not see it. Hell, Event Horizon had more tension and claustrophobic atmosphere. And do you know what the greatest tension/claustrophobia movie of all time is? ALIEN. THAT is how to do it right. The Descent simply pales in comparison to that masterpiece. The main problem being that i absolutely HATE all of the characters in the film. Good GOD they were annoying. And irrational and simplistic... So i'm sorry man, i just don't get the love for that flick. But i agree with you on Dog Soldiers (a guilty pleasure of mine...) and Doomsday, to a certain degree. I somehow kinda enjoyed that flick too lol... I can't really defend it rationally or logically, but it was pretty fun. I enjoyed the Mad Max-ian vibe ;-)
-
The fact that you enjoyed Doomsday, I will overlook the dislike you harbor for The Descent. :-) Have you seen Centurion?
-
that Giger is back onboard, presumably he wants his creation to go out with a little more dignity than the Newborn.
-
And no, i haven't seen Centurion... what's it about again?
-
Some Roman survivors trying to escape from the Picts and make it back to their lines. It's quite good.
-

Misspelling Giger is a serious faux pas for this entire site.
by LembasEater
And not instantly fixing it is pathetic. I'm not a hater and I don't use the Talkback lightly but... wow. Giger or Geiger: for the standard of Geekdom this site has set, to put it simply, you should know this. And more importantly - someone, I'm naming Harry first, should have changed it themselves or told you.
-
We don't agree with each other often, but i completly agree with you about Neill Marshall and his movies. Even his "bad" movie, DOOMSDAY, is still superior to most stuff made today. And of all the directors to be chosen to make an ALIEN movie, his is a name i would gladly welcome. And unlike many others who just do lip service, with Marshall i'm very sure the man really loves and adores and respects the ALIEN movies, specially the first two, as his career is filled to the grills with loving hommage references to them.
-
Centurion has something to do with romans.
-
Now i have heard it all. Now i have heard it all indeed! I just don't know which bullshit in that movie upset me the movies. Was it either the "science is evil" shit, or the "undestructable wisecracking odious comedy relief black dude" stuff, or the "final kill twas but a dream" ending that was a repetition of stuff that's been done to death since CARRIE and FRIDAY THE 13TH. I do give it to the movie and it's writer-director that the first 1/3rd of the movie and the presime ideas are solid, but they descent into dumbed down crap by the 2/3rd mark. Or it wouldn't be an Paul WC Anderson movie.
-

I cant believe the naysayers...this is fantastic news...
by moosetutters
I know Ridley doesn't read his press, but I'm sure there's an army of market-men doing this for Fox anyway, - THIS IS VERY PROMISING NEWS - trust Scott to do the right thing for his baby, and get the right visualist for the alien side of things, Ridley and Giger getting back together is like Bernini and Carravagio collaborating. Art as pure brain candy, spectacle, atmosphere and things hitherto unseen by the human eye. Take as much time as you need, fellas.
-
I seriously think 1st film - prequel, 2nd film conclusion to the series starring Sigourney Weaver as Ripley!! This is DEFINITELY the way Scott should go. He should wrap up what he started in a neat bow and bring back the series' true star, Ripley. The aliens are just the window dressing. The story for the conclusion would connect to the prequel in that they are both set on the alien homeworld. The main character from the prequel is STILL alive after hundreds of years!! Ripley learns of this and goes to meet him/her and they strike a deal to wipe them out forever, but it's NOT marines that go in (because that would be too same-y), it's JUST Ripley and the prequel hero.
-
underrated genre gem which happens to be one of the best space horror movies ever made.No it is not in the Alien level (but which space horror movie is?),it has its flaws but it is an undeniable fact that it has gained a cult following,it has been positively re-evaluated by many movie critics and it has been ripped off in some occasions.(The videogame Deep Space is the best example of that). Event Horizon is a fine mixture of Hellraiser,Alien,Solaris,Gothic Horror and Science Horror from the coffin-looking spaceship to the shocking ending of the BLACK hero of the movie. and i strongly believe that if the name of Paul WS Anderson was replaced with the name of Sir Ridley Scott you wouldnt even dare to use such biased and unjustified criticism.
-
Jesus H Christ. What corporation in their right mind would hire those imbeciles to pilot their multi-million dollar spaceship? That was the biggest stretch of all. Poor investment.
-
The only thing it has going for it is some very elegant production design and a promising set up that it then utterly fails to deliver on. It's badly cast, poorly written and not even slightly scary. But worst of all it has nothing original to offer - the writer and director simply lift very recognisable bits of other, better films and crowbar them into their screenplay, so we have the flood of blood (The Shining), the hammering noises and the flexing door (The Haunting 1953) as well as elements taken from the already mentioned Solaris and Hellraiser.<p>I wouldn't mind so much if Anderson had managed to achieve anything effective with his steals, but he doesn't and most of the eerie atmosphere that is initially created (in part by that stunning production design) is flunked by lousy direction. And Sam Niel hamming it up worse than a squad of pigs.<p>Plus any director who thinks that suitable closing music for a what is in theory an atmospheric horror should be 'Funky Shit' by the Prodigy needs a clip round the earhole.<p>Kilik I think you were groping for the title of 'Dead Space' earlier. A game which I suspect would actually make a decent horror except for the fact that you just know somebody would end up making it like 'Resident Evil'.
-
What are the do's, don'ts and tech specs? I don't want to be making any more posts like the one above....
-
my bad. Was thinking of Supernova, not Event Horizon. Event Horizon is a masterpiece next to Supernova.
-
Even though it is simply a "horrorized" version of Solaris.
-
What about the fucking entire art department? The talent here was fucking off the charts.. (as per IMDb) José María Alarcón... assistant set decorator Jonathan Amberston .... assistant art director Eddie Butler .... modeller Ron Cobb .... concept artist John Davey .... head painter Shirley Denny .... modeller Benjamín Fernández .... assistant art director Chris Foss .... concept artist Jean Giraud .... concept artist George Gunning .... head carpenter Dave Jordan .... property master Dan O'Bannon .... visual design consultant I remember the Heavy Metal issue with the insane concept art, these guys were gods.
-
Did you really interpret my post as saying that EVENT HORIZON was a masterpiece?!? Why don't you go re-read my post you doofus... ALIEN was the masterpiece i was talking about. What i said about Event Horizion was simply that it was BETTER than The Descent, in terms of creating a claustrophobic atmosphere and tension. Holy moly... glad i could clear that up lol
-
If EVENT HORIZONT had finished at about it's 30 minute mark, then yes, it could be considered a good movie mostly because Sam Neill graced it with his presence. But because the movie extents beyond that running time, it becames more and more dumb and crappy until the unsufferable ending which turns it into the typical Paul WC Anderson dumbed down crapfiest. There's nothing underrated about EVENT HORIZONT. If anything, and given the responses here, the movie is overrated.
-
Sorry for the mix up. but it's still insanity to say that EVENT HOROZONT is a better movie then THE DESCENT. Because it is insanity. I can't even beging to compreend how can anybody mistake that dumbed crappy shitty EVENT HORIZONT for the much superior, tense, scary and dramatic THE DESCENT. THE DESCENT, even in it's much inferior american version, is still a much better movie then that dumbed down idiotic EVENT HORIZONT crap.
-
You are a fucking clown with awful pretensions and no fucking clue whatsoever. <P>
-
I'm not opposed to Scott doing another Alien film, but a fucking prequel? Have we not all learnt our lesson with them? <P>I rather liked the Chronicles of ripley thing he said he wanted to do- that was a much more interesting idea than explaining the Space Jockey. <P> And goatfucker- this "THE DESCENT, even in it's much inferior american version, " is a prime example of you talking out of your arse. Do you actually know what the difference between the American and British version is? It's not that great. The British one is better, obviously, but it's deluded horseshit to say that the American one is "much inferior". <P>You really are a cunt
-
And yet you offer no argument whatsoever, only vituperation. You sound like Don Murphy.
-
... of THE DESCENT are isgnificant. It might just be a few minutes more, but they change the ending considerably, and also, the mood and the theme of the movie. Were it anybody but me saying this and you would be in full agreement. But because you are stupid and a retard, you just say shit, any dumb shit, just to be a contrarian. You are an idiot. Which is not news.
-
...PWSA's best film (which aint really saying much.) and at worst, it's a guilty pleasure. At best, it is somewhat underrated. Speaking of which, cant wait till Dead space 2 comes out this january.I'm loving the demo on XBL.
-
Exactly my thoughts. Well said. And to Asimovlives. I could barely decipher your inane ramblings there... were you drunk or something? I honestly don't recall your grammar/sentence structure being that bad... I mean, everyone knows you're off your rocker, but i thought you at least exhibited some basic level of intelligence.
-
Good god man, what happened to you?? lol
-
I must say...in all honestly...I'd watch a German Pony Fucking Fetish Video if it was done by Ridley Scott...I just love the way the guy go balls out on a production. Still...another Alien film makes me worried. The first film is just such a classic film...and the sequels mostly fail to recapture the feel of the first. I say let it lay...move on to something else Ridley.
-
okay guys I'm german so this one was actually real easy his wife was on a swiss gossip show and confirmed that her husband is working on one 3D movie for sure. There is the possibility that it's going to be 2 movies. planed is to do a prequel to the first Alien. and for all of you idiots who are talking about how his name is pronounced: forget it. gemran version is geeger and possible would be a french or italian pronounciation because Switzerland is devided in 3 languages. but I guess that's to much for americans :P Tschoe
