The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day? I thought it was dead.
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!
I intended to run this pic a couple of weekends ago when we were hit with that crazy string of actor deaths. I believe I replaced it with a Leslie Nielsen shot from Forbidden Planet… Anyway, it’s another pic from Escape From New York. I know, I know, we just ran a great shot from that film and this one isn’t as pretty, but it features one Mr. James Cameron hard at work putting paint on glass, doing an old fashioned matte painting for the New York skyline, so I couldn’t resist.
The talent that dude has. I wish I could display half the creativity as that man… from drawing to painting to miniature building to directing to submarine piloting to just being a smart motherfucker, that dude is kind of freaky talented. And this is coming from someone who was lukewarm on Avatar.
So, I hope you enjoy this look at a young Jim Cameron… I have another one from the offices of Battle Beyond the Stars that I’ll run sometime in the future, by the way. In the meantime, here’s today’s pic:

Tomorrow’s pic gets us in the holiday spirit as we see a look behind the scenes of a movie about a man obsessed with a sled.

That's a great photo, and I'm not a huge Cameron fan either, but you gotta respect his energy and story pacing.
-
Ah, it's awesome, that's what.
I miss matte paintings.
-
that's pretty fucking sweet, gots to agree with my brother stuntcock
-
... the time when James Cameron made movies I wanted to see. That time being about 15 years ago.
-
Can't argue with that. Avatar was cool to look at, but it's not his best movie. His best work was in the 80s and early 90s.
-
Matte paintings are neat.
-
he could also write a great storyline...
-
... with the horizon's waterline. He was one of a few VFX photographers on ESCAPE FROM NY, and one of three matte painters. So, perhaps he worked on that particular painting. His ingenious work for that movie was painting a "Manhattan" model black and trimming it with computer-like grid lines for the glider's landing readouts - since an actual large scale computer model of the city wasn't feasible.
-
My bad - Cameron isn't lining up the glass to the waterline, but the horizon line. It's the shot with the choppers arriving over Central park.
-
More Jim Cameron BTS pics please!
-
Viva El Cameron!
-
And still no Snake??!!
-
With that headline. This is still great - that Cameron fella can draw like a motherfucker.
-
NOW EMPEROR OF THE UNIVERSE. Quint many thanks for this cool BTS since Big Jim is my cinematic GOD.thank you.
-
Cool pic, but fuck the matrix....Wheres the pics from Terminator , and T2???? I cant fucking believe theres no T2 pic yet. All the love Cameron gets on this site and no T2??? Wow...and fuck off to the Robo daddy bullshit, that film is so badass its not right.I read people bitching about "Who Framed Rodger Rabit" the other day so ive made peace with the the fact that some guys on the talkbacks just love to bitch.
-
Was True Lies.
-
suck it haters.
-
He really is talented. Maybe not the best writer but still better then most directors. Wonder how many directors can do a matt painting. or a painting in general
-
...Cool Runnings!!!! A man obsessed with a sled? Has to be Doug E. Doug!!!
-
However, I did love it the first time I saw it...when it was called "Fern Gully."
-
The man can do fucking everything. Let's get him to sort out the economy.
-
io9 just posted an article about this, you can read it here: http://io9.com/5714832/gale-anne-hurd-come-with-me-if-you-want-to-live-terminator-franchise
-
your clichéd post offends me.
Be more interesting.
-
It was a solid movie with amazing effects. Complaints about the unoriginal story are valid, but it is well done.
-
...but kinda hoped it would be Big Jake. We need some behind the scenes with the Duke. Wait, the Duke? Carpenter remade Rio Bravo as Assault on Precinct 13. Big Jake is about Wayne as a character who seems to have a checkered past, going after the men who kidnapped his grandson. He keeps running into people who thought he was dead. Wayne was called the Duke. hmmm...coincidence?
-
is a huge fan of the western genre and many of his movies are inspired from them.i didnt know though that there was an indirect reference of Escape to an older western with Wayne.thanks for this info.
-
I do not think it means what you think it means. :)
-
FACT: mattmanreturns has questioned your use of the word "fact."
-
Is it from Citizen Kane?
-
Good call.
-
Specifically Jennifer Connelly being fitted for her white dress. Ahem.
-
Sorry Mr. Cameron, I didn't know you were here reading the talkbacks...I thought you were off making more of your awful films. My bad.
-
painting really? more like checking on the perspective or something, but with Jim , who knows..
-
This is the first E.F.N.Y. behind the scenes image I've never seen. Nice job. I really hope Kim Gottlieb-Walker gets her Carpenter bts photo book out soon.
-
Cameron is an artist. He did all the drawings in Titanic. When you see Jack drawing Rose, that's actually Cameron's hand (which is why it looks strangely much older than DiCaprio's hand).
-
have no fucking clue how they're done these days. Are the matte painting credits in films these days a typo? They're still done by matte painters who know how to paint traditionally AND digitally. The biggest difference is that they're now done with simple 3d perspective that doesn't tie the camera down unnecessarily and interrupt the flow the way it used to by having to lock shots down and mess with the type of shots the director had been using throughout the body of the film. The idea that the "computer" does it all now is idiotic. If you're gonna slag something off, at least do a bit of homework first. Even the guys that do the best stuff and go further 3d-wise than most are actually the best of the oldschool traditional matte painting guys. Like when Phil Tippett went digital and brought all his oldschool skills along, Matte World did the same. The people that throw this stuff around are about as bright as those that can go no farther than Ferngully for their references… doesn't anyone remember the 60s?
-
For Battle and Titanic respectively did he? I guess Alec Gillis and the famous Skotaks were sitting around twiddling their thumbs huh? More stupidity from Braindrain. Mattman's "all" the drawings for Titanic is just as lazy and stupid.
-
mattmanreturns doesn't know what he's talking about. Kilik is correct. Carpenter honestly believes ALL movies are really westerns in disguise. I've heard it straight from the man's mouth. Sift through the behind the scenes docs on Carpenter films and you'll eventually find it. Infinitely cool pic, Quint. That's one I don't believe I've seen before.
-
I always get a chuckle when I read online comments on how Avatar was ripped off from "Ferngully" or "Dances With Wolves". Saying things like that just show how spectacularly uninformed you are. There is a very popular scifi movie that mirrors Avatar's plot almost to a scene. Just a little thing, you may not have heard of... DUNE. ... an outsider comes to a new world where the natives have adapted to live in harmony with their otherwise deadly surroundings. Outsider falls in love with local girl, and becomes "one" with the native peoples. He is deified and is able to magically summon and control the planet's fiercest creatures to aid the natives in overthrowing their evil opressors. Yeah. Sounds just like Ferngully to me.
