The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day plays catch up!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I took a little unintentional break on this column as the new site launched, warts and all, but now’s time for shit to get real. No, I don’t have any Bad Boys images for you, but you catch my drift.
By my count, I owe you guys 5 days of pics, so below you’ll get five different BTS images. Let’s do dis.
At the end of the last BtSPotD I promised the next one would be kinda creepy and kinda sexy. The one I was thinking about was a shot from the behind the scenes of the Spanish flick REC, which was remade (uninterestingly) as QUARANTINE. I’m a big fan of the first and second REC flicks and think the reporter girl, Manuela Velasco, is absolutely adorable. So, adorable and creepy man-in-suit together means this picture is here.

You’re welcome. Let’s go to the opposite side of the film spectrum and throw in a behind the scenes shot from JJ Abrams’ Star Trek. There were a few to choose from, but I really liked this pic featuring a great view of just what goes on behind the camera during a shot that is essentially an over the shoulder on one actor. The one actor in this case is Chris Pine receiving a Vulcan smack down.

I quite enjoy Bruce Willis’ Western take on a Samurai tale LAST MAN STANDING, directed by the great Walter Hill and I love this photo of cameras seconds away from rolling on Willis’ double-fisted gunslinger about to lay down some lead.

While we’re still with the manly men theme, who’s more manlier than Indiana Jones? Although this isn’t a particularly manly shot. Who knew Sallah and Indy didn’t lift that big fucking ark for the great silhouette shot down in the Well of Souls? I apologize for shattering the illusion.

I’m not 100% positive what this pic of Kubrick is from, but I’d hazard a guess that it’s from THE SHINING. It could just be Kubrick sitting around at home for all I care, it’s just a plain great shot of one of our most iconic filmmakers.
UPDATE: This pic was taken during the filming of A Clockwork Orange by photographer Dmitri Kasterine and has quite a story behind it. Check out this Guardian article for the whole rundown. Thanks to Douglas Kirk for a heads up!

Now that we’re all caught up the BtSPotD will continue as normal. Tomorrow’s pic features a sweet transvestite… No, not Tim, Tony! See you then!

What the fuck is that?! Can anyone post a clip of this ...thing in action in the film it's from?
-
Very much wanting to see REC 2, but have no idea when it comes out in the U.S. Been on my saved queue for months.
-
What the fuck is that in the fifth pic? Can anyone post a clip of this ...thing in action in the film it's from?
-
That pic is from the set of A CLOCKWORK ORANGE. Here's an article by the photographer who took it. http://www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/2010/aug/11/dmitri-kasterine-best-shot-photography

That Manuela Velasco is nothing to sniff at, either.
-
You can see the guy, in the back next to those red shirts, holding one of the lights that were intentionally pointed at the cameras to create the constant flare effect. I have nothing against the movie, or lens flares in general, but when they are naturally created from a regular light source. Not when there is a specific guy who's job it is to stand there and create them.
-
She's so cute! Guess I'm gonna have to see REC now. Does she make out with that zombie?
-
docbosch, are you TRYING to awaken AsimovLives from his hitherto peaceful, non-"Jar Jar Abrams Shit Trek" slumber? Great.... Just great. Good job, asshole.
-
Just kidding lol, assumed you were taking a break until the site got straightened out. Thanks for posting to make up for lost days. Your BTS pics are the main reason i visit this site anymore, between the bitching in the forums & the "reviews" done by people that are clearly on some studio's payroll this place has become background noise. Thanks again.
-
Some sort of fancy light meter? Or I am foolishly mistaking a made up toy for a piece of filmmaking equipment?
-
BLOOD AND SOULS FOR MY LORD ASIMOVLIVES!!!!
-
The slate identifies the movie as "Gundown". Must have changed the title after shooting. Either way I thought that movie was terrible. The action sequences were badly staged and the script was unremarkable. Can't hold a candle to "Yojimbo"or "Fist Full of Dollars".
-
I've missed this column more than the inane articles about whoever Harry happens to be blowing today (Jackson, Rodriguez, Del Toro, et al.) Quint can you answer me a real question? Why did they update the site. What is supposed to be improved about it?
-
Of course you mean Anthony Perkins, and of course you mean hello my honey, hello my baby, hello my ragtime gal, and of course you mean China Blue, and of course you mean Ken Russell and Kathleen Turner's best performance, and Steven Hill and and and and CRIMES OF PASSION.

light meter
-
If you're talking about what I think you're talking about, I'm pretty sure that's to pull focus on the camera by remote.
-
the thing in the first pic isn't real?
-
That is all.
-
It'd be cheaper to go up to the effects tab in after effects and select "lens flare" than pay a dude minimum wage to stand there and hold a light at the perfect angle to get that affect, so don't get too bummed dude, I don't think that's what they. looks like a remote pull focus to make sure you could see kirk's pores at just the right time vs. the back of spock's sexy ears.
-
You've ruined Raiders.

I watched REC by myself in my apartment in the middle of the night in 2007. The final scene where that thing is shambling about in the dark fucking freaked me out so much I got sweaty and was afraid to make any noise. Then in the summer of 2008 I was nailing this chick who was fairly skinny and tall with big boobs. She had a messed up foot this one time, and I was sitting on the couch when she came out of the bathroom at the end of the hall. Her skin was so white, and she was walking all fucked up from her foot, and the light was all dark and blue... for a second I thought the creature from REC was coming for me. It was terrifying for a minute and then hilarious. I was never much into that chick after that.

Missed this column while monkeys are tinkering in the back room of AICN. Missed "REC" (went out of my way to miss the "Quarantine" stateside remake) and it's sequel, but Miss Velasco will have me brushing up on my Espanol this holiday break. The Raiders shot blew me away...had NO idea that's how they got that awesome shot. Nobody films shadows better than Spielberg. I work in After Effects and a few other "Lens Flare" generating CGI apps, and you just cannot mimic the type of flare effects Abrams captured "in camera" with any of them. I had no problem with them at all...but, I imagine they went through a LOT of takes getting those flare shots right. BTW...That is a focus puller remote control in the foreground of that shot. The two red shirts in the background look like Patrick Stewart & Avery Brooks! "Man, Picard...Fuck these young punks...with their fancy new bridge and lens flares!! Let's go find the bar before someone kills us in these red outfits!"

I saw this a couple times when it came out. It just sort of intrigued me as I wasn't used to such stylized stuff in theatres. I was really going to the movies a lot in those days and this movie stuck out a bit from other movies of the mid-late 90s to me. This movie gets unfarily dogged for some reason. It's nicely filmed and does exactly what it says on the tin. It creates a mood and sense of atmosphere that sustains and remains true to itself. It's just not reaching for any new or higher ground. It's another telling of Yojimbo, with Bruce Willis as the self-serving samurai. If you want to see someone get gunned down in slow motion every few minutes, this is your movie. It's got Christopher Walken playing a one-eyed maniac!
-
Walken's character (Hickey) seems to have both eyes.
-
.. put into having Spock act as little like Spock as possible. I'm not AsimovLives, overalll I liked the movie, but JJ Trek did piss me off in a lot of ways.

muldoon, they did indeed have guys creating flares on-set
by Inexplicable_Nuclear_Balls
I'm assuming the way you worded that, you thought they just added it in post. Watch the BTS footage on the DVD, they talk about the guys holding the flare lights.
-
Love this BTS PIco of the Day Catch up!
-
...look like any light meter I'd ever seen. Thanks Quint. Keep up the good work.
-
I think you know what I mean. I almost do.
-
Hollywood used to make great films designed to make lots of money. Now they just make lots of money. Only the real film fans are buying DVD's and Blurays. Kids are downloading-watching-and-deleting, the material means almost nothing to them. A momentary diversion from their game consoles. :(

-
like he was just dropped off on a planet with a bunch of idiots that he had to endure. Just can't see him enjoying things like apples, or sunsets, or blowjobs. What a great pic of the master tho. Hadn't seen it before.
-
I have no way of knowing this, provead, but I'll be El Kubricko wasn't above a blowjob, or a sunset, or apples. Barry Lyndon springs to mind. Damn, now I want a blowjob. I wasn't even thinking about it until YOU brought it up.
