There's A New FIRESTARTER Movie Coming, With Reinvention And 'Edge'!!
Merrick here...
THIS piece in Variety says that the Dino De Laurentiis Co. and Universal are teaming to reboot FIRESTARTER, inspired by Stephen King's 1980 book (which was previously adapted by director Mark L. Lester back in 1984 as a film that starred Drew Barrymore).
Mark L. Smith will script the new version, which Variety says is...
expected to be loosely based on the original King book, but the main character is to be reinvented with a little more edge.
While The Powers That Be hope to get the project rolling next year, it's still being scripted and has yet to go out to directors. So, who knows?

if somebody is typing at the same time as me.. BITE ME. Anyways... More Edgier.. more urban.. darker.. let the remakes schenanigans go!
-
Bring it on.
-
wow, thanks to this new format I can't tell whether videos/links didn't load on the page for whatever reason or whether the abnormally large breaks between the paragraphs are naturally occuring
-
Bring it on.
-
They need to redo The Running Man, that could totally work with todays reality TV culture.
-
Fuck off.

It's always a bad sign when they want to make a movie "edgier"
by Sardonic
When has this ever worked out?
-
This time there will be more fire. And it will start faster. Make the girl a boy and limit his abilities to natural gas flame.
-
Morgan Freeman could hunt her down. An animated cat could help her out of some tough scrapes. The Situation could make a cameo. The CG will be amazing in 3D with this film.
-
MEYERS: No, no, no! He was supposed to have attitude. SILVERMAN: Um... wh-what do you mean, exactly? MEYERS: Oh, you know, attitude, attitude! Uh... sunglasses! EXECUTIVE: Can we put him in more of a "hip-hop" context? KRUSTY: Forget context, he's gotta be a surfer. Give me a nice shmear of surfer. EXECUTIVE: I feel we should rastafy him by ... ten percent or so. Silverman redraws Poochie. They're still not totally satisfied. MEYERS: Hmm... I think he needs a little more attitude. Silverman blackens in Poochie's sunglasses. EXECUTIVE: Oh yeah, bingo. There it is, right there!

With the greatest respect, where the fuck are all the BNAT write-ups? Thanks to Nordling for his, but that's it? Those of us who can't make it wait for the Monday morning to hear all about it - what gives, guys?
-
And as I was reading it I kept thinking what a great movie it would be if it was done right. But the "loosely based" comment doesn't really sound promising.
-
An eight year old girl going apeshit with fire, destroying the C.I.A. operatives that experimented on and killed her parents needs to have a little more edge? Sure, why not? Make a Charlie a 15 year old bi-polar transvestite that lost all her money when AIG imploded. And don't call her Charlie...call her C-Bones. Have her start fires with her "lucky" book of matches. That edgy enough?
-
This sucks. But yeah, that first Firestarter movie was week...lots of room for improvement.
-
What could be more edgier that that?
-
He says he has no problem with this remake as long as it sucks worse than his novel.
-
a certain girl with a certain tattoo. No. Nothing at all. Hollywood can choke on my pubes.

The TB is afraid of me. I have seen its true face.
by Le Vicious Fishus
The horror is this: In the end, it is simply a picture of empty meaningless blackness. We are alone. There is nothing else.
-
the chick is going to look like that cunt from the dragon tattoo series..PASS!
-
And Cloe Morentz agent IS waiting for that call.
-
This is one of them. Pet Sematary is another. Please go ahead and make it so, Hollywood

It's not like the first version was some kind of classic
by Thunderbolt Ross
If I remember correctly, the book was actually very cool. Too bad they won't just follow the book.
-
Cheers
-
it'd be more cool to follow it up, with the original story as historical background. Especially if its "based-on" rather than an actual script from the book.

That's What It Needs! A Book About A Little Girl Who Can Start Fires With Her Mind
by kevinwillis.net
And a Native-American assassin that wants to make friends with her so he can kill her, and a guy convinced she can eventually spawn nuclear explosions and "crack the world like a plate"--that's what it needs. More edge. Like the guy clawing his eyes out or the Shop pulling out her mother's finger nails or . . . I'm sorry, where's the edge going to be again? We the feds roll up to the farm and start shooting and she sets them all on fire? . . . <br><br> Should go the Tron Legacy route and do a sequel. What's our 30 year old Firestarter doing, and what kind of trouble is she having with her kids?

Well its not like the original movie was decent or anything.
by HollywoodHellraiser
It was terrible in all regards. A remake should be better, right?
-
Was better, i bet the new one they cram down our throats with uneven cgi and a stupid plot. When the first was very effective with just plain VFX.

I was expecting the life story of Lisa Left-eye Lopes!
by paralyser-pro
That's the funniest quip ever posted here. Officially.
-
Not even close. In fact, it's not funny at all
-
Mind you, this remake will be shit as well, starring some chick with tats and a nose ring for "edge" and shot in crappy 3D so they can have flaming cars hurtling off the screen, but even with all that it'll be miles better than the earlier film.
-
I wonder what the over-under would be on these "film-makers" using the "edgy" Prodigy song of the same name in the first trailer for this? And - no - even if you think the original was terrible, it doesn't mean that this remake will automatically be better. It could just be terrible in a whole different way. Also - what do you think the producer of the Charlie's Angels movies will have to say about this?
-
Good luck with that.
-
Good luck with that.
-
just for George C Scott's performance alone it is worth watching, it's not a great story a little predictable but i though it was a pretty fun movie. Also Tangerine Dream made the score who are fucking awesome, some of the best movie scores of the 80s, if not by Goldsmith or Williams were by Tangerine Dream
-
I may be a bit biased as someone who has read quite a few of his works, and enjoys his writing... but I honestly think that some of King's material could be served really well with a modern revisit. The biggest plague about King's monumental success was the blatant hyperdrive that Hollywood went into with King's work in the 1980's. Stephen King could've sneezed in 1985, and Universal would've made a movie based on it. That lead to a lot of rushed, uninspired film adaptations of some otherwise really ripe material. A more faithful adaptation of "Cycle of the Werewolf"... who wouldn't be down for that? How about getting together 5 or 6 separate, unique genre directors and letting them have another go at "Creepshow?" Another crack at Pennywise the Clown with an "IT" remake doesn't sound too bad to me, either.
-
"Exorcist 3." He is fucking bombastically awesome in that movie. One of the most over-the-top, random performances the horror genre has ever seen.
-
i liked the old movie though, Tangerine Dream!!
-
It's like when someone says duck tastes "gamey" or when anyone other than a doctor works the word "bypass" into a sentence. That being said, George C. was badass as Rainbird. And if there's any chance of them sticking to the book, he could be even better.
-
But I don't think it'll be the same without an R rating and a Tangerine Dream score.
-
Perhaps they need to cast Eric Roberts as the David Keith Dad roll and Jon Voight as the George C. Scott Vietnam wackjob roll. Perhaps put Giada in a tasty TandA roll. They could film it in the nasty swamps outside of Wilmington so it would be close to the Di Laurintis property. It would also kick all kinds of ass if they did that.
-
I'm guarantee that some talentless Hollywood Pitch Dick who's never had an original idea in his life got the notion for this when he heard about "The Girl Who Played with Fire.": "Oh, someone must be doing a remake of that movie from the 80's, the one with that ET shorty....She's who?... No way! The one from Charlie's Angels! No Way!... It's what? Fuckin' Swedish what?... So It's not that Movie? Oh, we should Totes pitch that then. We could get Charlie's Angels to be her Mom! And she's rockin like tatts and shit. Dog, there are SO many movies that we can remake, we've got our entire career set!"
-
The kids these days, you gotta give 'em grit. Edge is SO last decade.

The original won't be half as pretentious as this new one sounds..
by CeejayNightwing
The original movie was at least pretty faithful to the source material as opposed to the emo crap they intend to deliver!
-
As long as he gets fired, I guess I'm fine with that.
-
I think they've got their hands full trying to salvage that Spider-man mess...j/k.
-
Seriously, folks, let me tell you what the original was about: A young girl is born to two parents who were part of a drug experiment, and has the ability to start fires. That's right, not fart glitter and unicorns, start fires and burn things. The mother is tortured to death. The Father goes on the run from a secret, conspiratorial govenrment operation called the shop. He has the ability to force people to do his will and see what he wants to see, but every time he uses that ability, it weakens and harms him. One day, it will kill him. Long story short, they get captured. The guy forces a doctor to kill himself by dressing up in women's clothing and forcing his own hand down the garbage disposal. A scared Native American Hitman with decidedly pedophiliac impulses is going to kill her at the end, after they do all these experiments on her. The end of the book has the father fatally forcing his will on Rainbird, the assassin, and dying. The girl, then, goes on a brutal rampage, essentially torching everybody and anyone in vengeance. And they're worried that the movie isn't edgy enough? I do not think they know what that word means.
-
the original SUCKED! just follow the book; this isn't hard, the book (as it was written) was successful - so a film that actually follows the plot of the original, successful, book, should also succeed. FIRE anyone who says otherwise. OK, what's next?
-
Honestly, is there a more meaningless phrase out there? All it means to me at this point is that the trailer for this will, inevitably, have The Prodigy on the soundtrack. Pass.
