Here be the first trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. The big launch party at Disneyland was this morning, I believe, and as luck would have it the internets (meaning us lowly land-lubbers) get to partake without too much of a delay. The trailer is below and even comes with a welcome by Capn' Jack hisself... which is a reworking of his Comic-Con shout-out, but we'll let that part slide.
Don't know about you salty seamen, but this Captain loves the world of Pirates of the Caribbean and is happy to see Depp back in the role... and I can't wait to see more of Ian McShane as Blackbeard!

Wow, came out earlier than I expected!

This trailer looks almost as shitty as the new AICN layout.
by AzulTool
Hehe, just kidding. I didn't even watch the trailer.
-
I dont know what i'm doin'...
-
I think it'll be a lot of fun, especially since we get some new people on board and dumped some of the older ones.

So glad they got rid of the dead weight of the last two films. Lets hope it is good. I do enjoy this character.
-
did this work?
-
...why it was necessary for AITC to go dark for an entire week (without redirecting to an "under-construction" page, mind you) to produce this slight variation of the already existing no-frills layout AITC already had.
-
agreed. Does this work?
-
Good job harry. Developing live is always the way to go;)
-
seconded
-
Brought back the feeling of the first one.
-
I think it will be fun the see the pirates in London as opposed to only the New World. Although, the cross "tear drop" scar is a little distracting on Depp's face. What could give a scar like that?

Could be good. Ian McShane is a great choice for Blackbeard
by Sardonic
And dropping some of weight from earlier films, along with the over the top magical shit (monsters and such, even though there are apparently zombies and mermaids in this one) should be an improvement.
-
i miss gore verbinski already
-
Hate these ill conceived good for nothing movies. What's the bullshit with him talking at the beginning too? Depp needs to go back to acting school!
-
Looks dull. I only saw the first one and wasnt particularly enamoured with it, but I thought there might be at least the odd interesting visual in this trailer...
-
ahahaha
-
They are good examples of "mindless fun", and there's nothing wrong with that.
-
jonny be a greedy mofo

He just flat out cannot act.

You do understand that's just to get you to the Quick Talkback Form, not for threaded replies, which aren't going to happen any time this decade, right?<br><br> That having been said, may I pimp my 100% free AICN Extra Stuff Talkback Mod (for Google Chrome or Firefox running Greasemonkey)? It restores some of the old formatting (while preserving new features), adds "Ignore" and "Hilite" buttons (for naughty and nice talkbackers, respectively), puts the title of the article in the actual window or tab title (which makes it easier to organize, if you keep multiple AICN articles open at one time). There's a preference to turn moderator comments pink, to reverse the sort of order of the talkbacks (if you would prefer them last to first--doesn't move the Quick Talkback form, though) . . . AND it keeps a running count, so each comment, in the same field as the date and time (put back where it's supposed to go) features something like "20 of 36", so you know what number a comment is. It might not sound like much, but when you're participating in an ongoing conversation, it's kind of handy.<Br><br> Oh! You also have the option to automatically expand all the talkbacks, so you don't have to click them open one by one or click the "Expand All" button or anything like that. They're just automatically open when you hit the talkback.<br><br> And it converts BRs and Ps and HRs into actual formatting, for those running the mod.<br><br> http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/92278
-
the rest of it looks like more of the same, but hopefully it'll entertain me.
-
But I sure have a lot of fun in the world. Each POTC movie has successfully drawn me in to the pirate world for a time to hang out and have fun - just like the Disney park ride does. I really do love it.
-
she's great. ian mcshane is great. dunno about captain barbosa...it's like he and sparrow are becoming more like a dynamic duo type rather than fellow enemies....

weight, Bloom and Knightly, and added a major talent with McShane.
-
No need to say more. Plus no more wasted time on the Orlando/Kiera plot lines (Oh noes, they got separated ... again.) Though, I am sad to see no more Davy Jones and his ridiculously awesome CG.
-
My initial reaction was an overwhelming sense of "been there, seen that". But given the bazillions that parts 2/3 made, I guess there's a market for it.
-
but that's about the only positive I see in this trailer.

Dunno if anybody who plays World of Warcraft is reading this but there is a nice little video for one of the areas in the game which is pretty much a copy of the scene from Pirates 2 when Orlando Bloom is in the water and sees the Kraken for the first time underneath the ship.
-
Seeing the title hit the skull at the end of this trailer, along with the iconic music just made me want to cheer! The last movie was bloated, I don't give a shit, I love these movies and look forward to seeing this one. And no Bloom! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Which I enjoyed mildly, but not to the extent of the first one.
-
I actually really liked the Will character in the first one, and he had great chemistry with Depp. But his and Keira's arcs were completed. They may have had a cameo in the sequels, and that would've been enough, but no, they wanted to make Sea Star Wars and brought them back, making half the movie about silly soap opera bullshit, spending time on them doing irrelevant things. Pirate stand alones are the way to go here. Looking forward to this.

They went from an English lady who speaks proper English with an English accent to a Spanish woman whom you can't understand when she speaks English. From a skinny young lady to a plump old woman. And I don't see any cleavage in there.
-
Catching something before it's post, especially with the new Ajax mega-posting, is tricky. A little beyond the scope of my talents. I need to spend more time learning Ajax.
-
Sorry, this shit bored me halfway. Marshall was a poor choice for director.

Love Depp as Captain Jack and McShane is always good value but there was not one stand out moment in that whole trailer. Blu-ray rental at best.
-
for this thread. Keira's absence is really felt. Orlando can go back to being an elf, I don't care.
-
that's what the others were right?

As long as it's a totally standalone complete story...
by IndustryKiller!
I can't believe the idiotically made the sequels serialized overwrought incomprehensible nonsense when they had a real opportunity to explore a totally different story and tone with each successive film ala the three Indiana Jones films (there's only three right)? This could be fun if it stands on its own and they drop expendable characters and bring in whole new ones for the next film, there is ZERO reason for Penelope Cruz to be in any more than one of these films. Depp and Rush are the only actors that ever need come back.
-
is no keira or orlando bloom, Happy to see Ian Mcshane, Will be interesting to see how this turns out has the same look the previous three had but searching for the fountain of youth?
-
Look, I loved the original, but like many of you, liked the second chapter less and basically hated the third chapter which became bloated with sea gods, magic, alternate realms and gobbledygook. This trailer seems to recapture the lighting and general ambience of the ride itself, which was part of why "Pirates" worked so well to begin with. Ian McShane looks and sounds awesome. Johnny's Captn' Jack is always welcome, however I'm betting that he and Penelope Cruse fail to generate any chemistry.
-
I love these movies, and it looks like this will be a worthy sequel. Capt'n Jack Sparrow is the new Indiana Jones.
-
But is it a good movie, or just Disney's superior trailer-making skills? I mean, those dudes made me kind of want to see The Sorcerer's Apprentice! (Don't worry; I didn't.)
-
capt jack vs barbossa vs blackbeard = cant wait.
-
It will still make boat loads of money! ;)
-
Seriously, the third one was mostly unwatchable. If they just scale it back a tad, it will already be better. With the inclusion of McShane, it should be a fun summer movie. No more, no less.
-
Did you miss the two young kids clearly in love that seem to be the substitutes? The boy even kinda looks like a younger Orlando Bloom at a glance.....the only love interest I'm interested in seeing onscreen is Penelope Cruz, because I'm excited to see a woman that can sort of stand up to Jack.
-
I've never seen on e of these films all the way through... Caught bits of it on TNT a few times. Couldn't tell which movie was on, even... This seems like it would be a good place to jump in. I won't need to care about returning characters, and will (possibly) be able to enjoy it as a stand-alone adventure. Doesn't that seem like the proper course? Retain loyal fans and attract new ones?
-
i<br>just<br>want to<br> see if the line break tag works
-
You describe Penelope Cruz is a "plump old woman" ?? What the fuck is wrong with you?
-
So how come there are line breaks in some of you guys' posts??
-
Did they throw him in to try to fool teenage girls into thinking Orlando was still in the movie? Whoever he is, I hope he dies 20 minutes in.
-
I hope AICN remembers the only reason people still come here is talkbacks... if we leave, this site has got nothing.
-
These movies are fun and you cant beat the art or set design in any of the previous movies. (well you can but you know what i mean)
-
Hope this is better. I really don't understand what the hell they were going for in the 3rd movie. 1 was great, 2 was pretty good..and 3 was all over the place and just too weird..
-
Good to see Keith Richards back!

After watching the trailer I put my laptop in the toilet and...
by HopkinsBalls
took a big shit.
-
They were going for what they're always going with movies such as this, MONEY! Trust me, there is no creativity or intelligence involved when they make a movie that makes hopkinsballs flush his brand new Mac Pro into the toilet and take a big shit on it! Personally I'd rather watch 2 Girls 1 Cup in 3D!
-
As long as it's better than the absolutely god awful third movie I will be seeing this. Honestly that movie was bullshit. They spent half the movie going to get Jack and then gathering all the damn pirates together. Then voodoo mama joojoo randomly became a malestrom that divided two giant fleets of ships that I was geared up to see battle it out. And then only TWO damn ships battled and it wasn't even that exciting. It was fuckin retarded from start to finish. But I'm not bitter ;)
-
Oh, he wrote 'salty seamen',...never mind.
-
But if they were permitted to finish the screenplay before filming began, there is hope.
-
I was skeptical until I saw the trailer. Depp is mincing about a bit much, but hey he is STILL Jack Sparrow and I fucking love that guy. Everything else looked good, including the lady pirate. Damn. I am so effing hungry for a fantasy adventure movie with STYLE, with a world you can really get into, and Pirates generally nails that for me. Can't wait for this one.
-
just feels...weird. why even put them in the trailer? why not write the characters out entirely once it became clear they weren't coming back? just...weird. am I the only one that feels that?
-
The first film was pretty good, but the second and third movies just plain sucked.
-
How, when you have movies with pirates, epic battles, sea monsters, cannibles, zombies, witches, etc, how come all these movies have the same effect as one watching paint drying? These films are BOORING to the 100000th Degree. Good lord, I have sat through 3 of them and I'll be damned if I get caught up in the pre-release massive add campaign and celebrity buzz on this one. They look great when you can clip out the exciting parts and make a preview, but watching them? Tedious in the extreme. Some good actors, and some good effects (at times), but the screenplay and direction are friggin bland.
-
Eh I was hoping for some more zany ass fun like part 3 (the only one I liked just because its when I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb) but that just looked painful.
-
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...shit. Is it over yet? (Yawn).
-
Theoretically? I mean this is what I never quite understood from the moment of first hearing about this months ago. Wasn't the huge council meeting in At World's End supposed to be ALL of the existing pirates? why wasn't he there?
-
ENOUGH with the 3D! For the love of God, can we just make normal movies again? Must we keep releasing the kraken?
-
Everything else looks good, except that. Looks like a distraction. I could be wrong, we'll see I guess.
-
First one was pretty boring. Second one was pretty awful. Never saw the rest. This one looks like a flop.
-
Completely awkward and cringe inducing. Why even include that? Since when does Capt. Jack break the fourth wall??
-

-
I'm sure it'll be fun, but I am a bit disappointed that this likely forgoes any ACTUAL adaptation of Tim Powers' truly excellent historical fantasy "On Stranger Tides."
-
I know the site's all fucked up, but that's some bush league shit right there. I apologize.
-
At any rate. Less bloated without a zillion subplots banging into each other. I'm there.
-
It's way better than these fucking pirate movies. Certainly Dead Man's Chest and At World's End. I'm surprised to see so many people on here getting so psyched for what appears to be another load of crap.
-
But I always thought The Anubis Gates would make a better movie anyway. I heard that they had a Last Call Movie in the works. Whatever happened to that? My dream Tim Powers project would be an HBO miniseries adaptation of Declare.
-
I liked the first one a lot. It was fun. The second one was a bloated mess, so much so that I didn't bother seeing the third one. This one looks scaled down, leaner. It might be okay with Ian McShane as Blackbeard, but I will let other people tell me what they think of it before I consider seeing it. The young romantic couple look like ridiculous added on dead weight. 86 those two, Bruckheimer (if you're even involved this time)! Pirates do not need assistance from some bland pretty boy and some Keira Knightly wanna be.

Johnny Depp just did this so he could afford another island
by Rupee88
can't blame him..he earned the right to do so from past performance.
-
"Do It Better Or STFU" ... it just fits so perfectly so often for so many opinions from people who, to be blunt, haven't even seen the fucking movie yet
-
Which is no surprise since part I and III sucked royal monkey dick. Only part II was entertaining.
-
I nearly puked all over my keypad.
-
Wasn't the fountain of youth in Florida? Werent the Spanish the ones going after it? It needs more Spanish crews, they were the true badasses of the carribean. Indigenous tribes? Fuck you! Where's your gold! Well they got Cruz at least.
-
Keira and Bloom fit nicely into the first film, but their story was done and dragging those characters through a trilogy really...sucked. I mean 2 sort of lost me and 3 I didn't even care anymore. I can't even really remember what happened with them, Will becomes the new captain of the flying dutchman for some reason and Swan goes...and...does other things?
-
Oh, okay... okay, new Pirates of... the... zzzzzzzzzzz
-
You probably also thought Return of the Jedi, Godfather Part III, Exorcist 2 and Indy 4 were the best of those franchises.
-
Incredible Lame Pun!!!
-
Dramatically Reduced Budget. Not that I miss the overblown bullshit of the second and third Pirates movies. This is the first time I've visited AICN since it became all this weird looking shit. Time to leave again for awhile and wait for this ugly computer disease to be cured. Is this seriously the way the site is going to be now? This is just a temporary problem, right?
-
Penelope Cruz old? She's 33, you silly boy! You wish you could wake up next to a girl like her every morning!
-
No, there is only 2 Indiana Jones movies. Some say they made two more sequels in 1989 and 2008 but i don't believe it.
-
After the awesome Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse Of The Black Pearl I always wished they would make a sequel, and now the trailer is here... <br> <br> oh just so you know I don't count the other 2 films as Sequels or as part of the franchise as they were clearly rushed and a big pile of shit. and I have erased them from my memory.<br> <br> But why's Barbossa back? thought he died at the end of the first film

The 2nd and 3rd films had amazing sfx work and nothing else. They were dumb, boring, overblown and lacking in the humor which made the first film a success. I won't be suckered into paying $18. No way. Piss off, Captain Jackoff.
-
How the fuck does she still get work?? She's fucking awful and brings everything she's in to a screeching halt. That fucking voice of hers sounds like a high pitched fart and is a knife in the neck when you have to listen to it. The first film was really fun, but because of the dreck that was part 2 and 3, the decision to skip this one is easy.
-
her accent drives me nuts...oh, and thats an awful trailer, looks as boring as the first. however, I loved the 2nd one and applaud what they did with the third...but cruz? couldnt sit through it
-
the internet has moved on, people's attention spans are even shorter. they aren't going to have patience to wait for AICN to fix what must have been the most basic of codes to begin with. if you guys can't handle this site, how will you ever adapt? i'm hoping you'll launch with some slick, new effective format, but i doubt it. i've been checking back, and what is up to read isn't even comfortable to look at, so i pass by. it took me some trouble to even log in again and post this. it'll probably be my last until the 'reveal' (fingers crossed) of the new site. this is just poor form, fellas. it's embarrassing. i hope the site lives through it.
-
Tim Power's awesome novel. Get it!
-
Cruz speaking in her native spanish is one of the most beautiful voices in world cinema. She is immensely talented, and her work in Pedro almodovar's movies have earned her accolades and awards all over the place. You americans know almost nothing of Cruz's work, and the characters she has played in american movies belittle her real talent. Whenever an american speaks ill of Cruz's talent as an actress, they literally don't know what they are talking about. Really.
-
Oh, the terrible foreign accent! How dare people not speak perfect american accents, specially the foreigners. Foreigners are such whacky people, speaking with their weird languages and weird dialects. How dare this foreigners with cultures that are thousands of years old not completly subject to the loony demands of some geekoid from the neck of the woods of Assville, USA!
-
No CGI creatures, no Kraken, no epic sea battles. is their budget lower this time or are they just working on the CG effects?
-
Sorry but I don't think even a McShane Blackbeard can save this.
-
were basically one big comic book crossover or series done as movies. Not a adaptation, but with just every last bit crammed onscreen short of one-shots of each Pirate Lord and another appearance of Anna-Maria. Gotta say I'd like to see her pop up again.
-
I'm guessing Sparrow's been to the fountain before?
-
Way to many random jump cuts. You can do better that that, hollywood. Terrible Trailer.

Trailer looked <br> ok
-
The additions in the cast already look better. The direction looks off though. Still it has to be better than the third film. How do you have a British armada face off with a pirate fleet and not have them fight! Fuck that movie.
-
Vincent Dinofrio will reprise the Kiera Knightly role.. you KNOW you want it!
