BNAT: THE DIRTY DOZENTH Standby Situation... There's a little hope.

Hey folks, Harry here... having just returned from the PrePreParty at PINBALLZ ARCADE and the PreParty at the HIGH BALL. As a result, I am a bit tipsy. Giggle. And I'm so happy about how BNAT is going to go tomorrow.

The good guys won, and pretty much every battle was won... except the battle I most wanted to win, but I figured I literally had next to no chance of scoring SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO... but I came close, which only counts with hand grenades and atomic weaponry. I don't have or operate either, dammit.

Anyway - THE STANDBY situation.

The standby line will be over on the Patio with the benches. Before going there though - you'll need to come inside the ALAMO SOUTH and get a raffle ticket.

Now - We intend to begin BNAT at 11am - filled. SO - I would recommend getting to the ALAMO SOUTH - no later than 10am. Honestly - have the rest. Take that morning shower, just in case.

KRISTEN - the Alamo South Manager - will be running this. She will not take bribes or sob stories.

There's a guy that'll be there that flew from Ireland on the chance to get in. There's two lovely ladies that drove from Mississippi on the chance to get in. And those are just 3 of the stories I know of - I believe there's one guy that game in from New York - on the chance of getting in. But I'm here to tell you they have no more chance than any other Austinite that just wakes up - gets down there - does a good deed and waits in line.

I truly wish all of y'all the best of luck.

How many tickets are left? Well - only 2 people have had to cancel this year. That's the least ever in the history of BNAT. Last year there was 23. But I guess last year's line-up blew people away and they expect me to deliver like that again. They're crazy. But probably right. Wink.

Get some good sleep - and I'll see you in the morning!

    23 last year?

    by Stubbadub

I was in the standby line and only two people got in. Harry's posts last year made it sound like it was the best year for standby hopefuls, but then they came out and called two numbers. At the time we were told that the rest of the tickets had been picked up by their owners, but from Harry's number conformation it doesn't sound like that's what happened. It sounds like 21 tickets were given to people other than those of us in the standby line. Ultimately it's a private party for Harry and they can give out the tickets however they want, but it is a little disappointing to be told both online and in person that there are tons of tickets available only to end up with two.

    My Theory

    by honestlylincoln

The application was viewed as tough and there weren't that many who applied. The people who got in are the hardcore geeks that wouldn't miss BNAT for anything.

Harry, I'm a fan of the site and I follow you on Twitter. As a fan, I have one request. Please stop writing "giggle." Anymore, you write it in EVERYTHING you post, be it on AICN or Twitter. It's quite annoying.

    Standby is brutal.

    by Rustle

I've attended more than one BNAT, and I've stood in three standby lines. And I with Harry would try and discourage people from coming from out of town for standby. Your odd's are not good. Often it is over 50 people going after 2 seats, and they're probably going to be two of the worst seats in the theater. Front row off to the side, or folding metal chair. If you're in Austin, sure, why not? But buying a plane ticket for standby is pure folly. If you want to attend a BNAT take the time to put your effort into a great application, and take it on the chin if you don't get in. Just some friendly advise. One thing that has puzzled me since BNAT's have moved to South Lamar is why they don't hold it in the largest theater there. I'm not sure what the seat count is, but if they moved it to screen 3, they could probably get 50 to 100 more people into the theater.

Done standby twice and got in both times.

    by Ozy

Been to three BNAT's and got into my last two from standby line, and I drove out from Miami all three times. It didn't matter which seat I got just as long as I got in I would have sat on the floor. Also as much as I love BNAT I also love visiting Austin and seeing friends and fellow AICNers so even if I didn't get in I would have had a good time visiting. Sadly I couldn't make it again this year due to unforeseen circumstances but I'm going next year even if it's back to the standby line.

  • Dec. 11, 2010, 2:25 p.m. CST

    did standby twice as well.

    by Michael

Back when I lived in Austin. Made it in for BNAT 7, which was amazing. Wasn't so lucky for BNAT 8.

Toho will regret not letting Harry screen YAMATO.

    by thethedew

What better way to get any buzz going than an exclusive screening at Geek Movie Christmas? Dumbasses. I was dead-on right in my prediction that Harry was trying to get the show into BNAT, though. Yay me.

    I have a feeling...

    by justmyluck

...the lowdown on TRON: LEGACY being eye/sound candy and short on substance is stifling BNAT review posts (returning the fav for the arranged BNAT IMAX preview). Would be nice to at least get a rundown on the swag contents pimped here with that bag-stuffing time-lapse video. So, TRON:L is currently 64% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes : [imagine a paragraph break here] I don't think I've seen this much pre-release marketing since WB's for Burton's BATMAN (1989). TRON:L will thus pull huge opening number of course and with even so-so reviews will probably last longer than that. That and the advance merch toys with the light-up stuff et. al. for the kids. Yep, tots and moppets will drag their parents to this in 3D in droves. [imagine a paragraph break here] When the original TRON arrived in '82, Disney was still taking the odd risk in it's PG RATING period with THE BLACK HOLE, THE WATCHER IN THE WOODS, BLACK CAULDRON and, yep, TRON was even a bit of risk. TRON:L seems now more to be a hole-in-one than a gamble, from the simple executive deduction that re-dressing the TRONIVERSE in 2010 CGI will bring at least the fans, the kids and the curious to theaters. That's more than enough to haul-in plenty of loot, and especially factoring all the eventual video releases down the winding road. Welcome to "Safety Net Cinema". Welcome to the GRID.

I think I've put the finger on what's been bugging me in the various advance clips and trailers for TRON:Legacy. In the original TRON, for the computer world, NOTHING LOOKED TACTILE. Not even close. In 1982, Disney had transferred the filmed character footage to 70mm-formatted black & white transparencies for rotoscoping and backlighting "animation". It created a luminous, otherworldly flickering effect that was sort of retro and future at the same time. In TRON:L, it's obviously rubber costumes and plastic discs stuck on people's backs yet again with neon glows - but it's just not a cohesive vibe. You could argue that everyone in TRON:L's computer world should be some digi-stylized motion capture job to give everything that electronic vibe once again. Choosing a clear and tactile look for the human characters in the digital realm may be Koskinski's big faux pas here - especially trying to pull off the Jeff Bridges "CLU" bobblehead.
