Get Hammered!! Here's A THOR Trailer...

Published at: Dec. 10, 2010, 7:02 p.m. CST

Merrick here...

A trailer for THOR has gone online over at Yahoo, containing much of the same material seen in the famously leaked Comic-Con reel we enjoyed a few months back (there's some new here stuff as well).

This is my first embed posting via the site's new architecture.  Hope it works...hope you can see it...hope you can Talkback about it...hope the article doesn't disappear completely for no obvious reason.  Hope...

P.S. I have no idea why the paragraph spacing on this article looks dopey.  Looks fine when I'm entering the story into our admin fields :-(

    Damn....

    by ninthconfiguration

Kind of a make or break trailer. Iron Man's 1st trailer felt the same way, too.

  • Dec. 10, 2010, 7:11 p.m. CST

    Same old Same old

    by drdoom_v

Same old thing--again--of course they are not going to stick to the comic--or the great Walt Simonson series and just when it could not get any worse There is Natalie Portman! (yeah I know she is good looking) but the only halfway decent acting she ever did was in Leon/The professional--she straight out sucks ass acting wise. Then comes the 3D! man this really sucks!

the end of comic book movies

    by Titus05

trailer started out decent enough but went downhill quick after Hopkins appeared...don't have much hope for this...Green Lantern and Thor prove that not all comic book heroes translate well into movies

    Thor

Okay. Looks good to me. Looks fun. Get the original Iron Man vibe. BTW: Change the talkback please. Oldest to newest. Come on people.

    by Titus05

too bad I still can't edit it...maybe in another 10 years AICN will add that functionality...does it take a website crash for AICN to update their site?

  • Dec. 10, 2010, 7:21 p.m. CST

Much better than the previous trailer...

    by bubcus

... still not sold on this though. It looks like a "typical" origin story which is getting a bit redundant now. The AICN website sure looks like a formatting war zone. Went from work where the fonts were huge to the fonts being tiny on my home computer and tons of spacing everywhere.

  • Dec. 10, 2010, 7:21 p.m. CST

    super dopey!

    by yabory

does look weird. the paragraph spacing, but it's how we roll. we find, we see it, we bitch about till our noses bleed. or snort too much of the white gold. as for the trailer, other than the fact it's another goddam movie in 3D, it looks fucking awesome!!!

  • Dec. 10, 2010, 7:23 p.m. CST

Looks like something from Flash Gordon!

    by HollywoodHellraiser

UGH!!! The set, The costumes, and The background look like scenes from the 80's Flash Gordon movie!<p>And the opening of the trailer look like they used some of the XMen2 set design.<p>I dunno its looking like a Syfy original to me, folks!

  • Dec. 10, 2010, 7:30 p.m. CST

Damn, I think this might tie the GL trailer.

    by HollywoodHellraiser

One was hockey looking, had an EPIC FAILED line readings by Blake Lively and overplayed humor by Ryan Reynolds, whereas this one is just plastic costumes, bad sets, and way to modern looking!<p>I think DC and Marvel might have some turds on their hands.

AT least Helmsworth is acting the part with some "gravitas".

    by Linguo_IS_Dead

And damn is he jacked. The sleeves still look too "rubbery" to me....but I'll check it out in theaters. Captain America on the other hand is not getting a cent of my money. Fucking Chris Evans!

    by bobinnova

They remade Highlander II - The Quickening! Hemsworth is playing the Lambert role and Hopkins in the Connery role. Let's hope Captain America saves Marvel.

    Reynolds v Hemsworth

    by Miyamoto_Musashi

I am more confident with Hemsworth being a convincing Thor than Reynolds as GL. Both I think will be much better than Captain America with Joe "Consistently mediocre" Johnston at the helm and Chris fucking Evans

  • Dec. 10, 2010, 8:04 p.m. CST

Considering how infamous this website is...

    by Linguo_IS_Dead

...these technical issues with the redesign are pathetically unprofessional. Seriously AICN, beta this shit before you switch over!

  • Dec. 10, 2010, 8:04 p.m. CST

    Oh, it's alright.

    by Subtitles_Off

Looks like they finally got to re-use those X-MEN sets. "This is Ughth," might catch on (with slightly challenged people). Agent Coulson is a bad-ass now? Other than that...it looks better than anything called THOR has any right to look. At least the kid went to a gym. First time any of 'em have done that since Christopher Reeve.

  • Dec. 10, 2010, 8:05 p.m. CST

    Absolute WANKERY

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

That goes for the new format of the site as well... <P> Glad to see most of the people on this thread shitting all over this epic FAILure of a trailer. I remember getting ganged up on by a bunch of rabid, tasteless fanboys in the comic-con footage thread. I called out this abomination and all i got was resistance from a bunch of clowns, saying how "awesome" this looked. <P> God, this looks like pure garbage. Everything from the casting, to the set design, to the dialogue and acting, to the cliche and AWFUL music selection in the trailer. This POS movie looks like a sequel to The Chronicles of Fucking Riddick. <P> Count me the fuck out...

  • Dec. 10, 2010, 8:06 p.m. CST

    Hhhmmmm...

    by dr sauch

Marvel is hitting .900 on these movies. Where did they lose some points? IN NOT KEEPING ERIC BANA AS BRUCE BANNER. Fucking Ed Norton was all wrong, and as for Mark Ruffalo, I can't see it. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

    origin movies

    by enya_mouf

I think the problem with the multitude of marvel comic book movies is that they don't have an established story arc to follow. All we get is yet another origin story. I think that's what went wrong with Iron Man 2. It was more of a teaser for the Avengers than a story. I would've liked to have seen 'Demon in a bottle' (never happen) or 'Armor wars'. Hopefully Spider-man will recap the origin like the Hulk did in the opening credits and then just start a new story.

  • Dec. 10, 2010, 8:15 p.m. CST

    Marvel is hitting .900?

    by Subtitles_Off

Where can I get some of THAT gas? I suppose you're not counting SPIDER-MAN 3, X-MEN 3, FANTASTIC FOUR 1 & 2, INCREDIBLE HULK, IRON MAN 2, any of the PUNISHERs or WOLVERINE as Marvel, huh? Marvel properties aren't even batting enough to get them a seat in a major league dug-out.

    I guess it looks nice

    by Kraven Morehead

I just never liked the idea of Thor. A god slumming on earth always seemed a little far fetched (and that's saying a lot considering the genre we're dealing with).

  • Dec. 10, 2010, 8:27 p.m. CST

JettL, just got done reading the script for RISE.

    by Subtitles_Off

I don't know how you did it, but you managed to squeeze in Firefly, Bane, Orca, AND a female puppeteer with a scar on her face. Gotta hand it to you, bro. I didn't think you could do it, but you did. I'll never doubt you again.

  • Dec. 10, 2010, 8:35 p.m. CST

    Fareal...I agree 100%.

    by Sulla

This is political correctness gone crazy. We're talking NORSE mythology here people. Sorry to burst the pc bubble, but black Heimdall is just fucking stupid, and an Asian Norse god as well? Give me a break. By the way, I'd complain just as much if they made a movie based on Chinese mythology and added white actors to play the gods. No difference, just stupid and unnecessary.

  • Dec. 10, 2010, 8:35 p.m. CST

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

I think the Spiderman reboot may be in good hands... Finally saw The Social Network last night (good flick, a bit overrated though. Not my favorite Fincher film, not by a long shot...), but Andrew Garfield was fucking FANTASTIC. First film i've ever seen him in. My anticipation for Spider-boot just increased 10-fold.

    Um, yeah, that looks shitty

    by Gungan Slayer

I'll be honest, it does look better than I anticipated, but man, this looks awful. They also basically showed the entire movie in the trailer.

because the web designer isn't the amazing professional Harry believed. It sucks, and the guy should be fired. I hate the new formatting. It's annoying, slow and looks amateurish. It's also annoying beyond comprehension when as I'm typing, I'm getting... o...n...e....j....e...r...k...y.....l...e...t...t...e...r.....a...t.....a....t...i...m...e. As though the browser now has to play catch up. Same thing happens when deleting, only worse. Those other online sources of info are looking more and more intriguing...

It's all finally coming together, and looks great!

    by kevred

With each new epic comic film from this point on, I think we'll need to start getting used to the idea that no matter the technology, it simply isn't possible to recreate the worlds and action we have in our minds on screen. There will simply always be the disconnect. It's an unreachable goal. That said, this looks like a great amount of fun, and all the new bits are spot-on. You can tell there's a lot of love for the source material going on in so much of this. I mean, c'mon - remember, folks, we have Kenneth Branagh directing a helmed and hammered Thor fighting the flippin' Destroyer and Loki, with his classic Asgardian buddies along for at least part of the ride! Quibbles over details aside, who would have thought that this would be possible just a few years ago? We know it's not going to be all of our wildest fantasies about an unbelievably large-scale Asgardian epic - Hollywood just isn't set up for that right now. Maybe later. But this looks terrific in the meantime. Hopefully this, Cap, Mountains of Madness, and Hobbit will all hit the right notes, and if so, it could be a great ride of a next few years. After the last couple years of rubbish, we could sure use it.

  • I think this will be a nice walk down Magic and Avengers set up...and it is looking like Hulk will be the baddy based on some tidbits from Mark Ruffalo...So we could expect some Thor on Hulk fisticuffs which would be...epic IMO...

    by Dr. Samuel Loomis

I was pissed when I saw that but then I realized, there's an option to see it in 2D. If people are seriously going to dip out on this movie because of that, then this series of films is going to drop in making money, ultimately, it could lead to some very dark places with The Avengers and what comes after. So seriously, all you pissants ranting and raving about it being in 3D, just fucking watch it in 2D and support Marvel Studios. Goddammit you people piss me off.

As far-fetched as the idea of a God slumming around on earth is, I think like 1/3 of the world's population believes it actually happened, what with that Jesus guy and all. Granted, you might think they're crazy, but it's certainly a popular belief, if not a plausible one. Also, that trailer was. . .kind of good. I was grinning through the whole thing, which hasn't happened since the first Tron Legacy trailer. I'm just really, really eager to see what a Branagh adaptation of a Thor film will be like, considering his pretty extensive history in Shakespeare stuff. Everything looked decent, too--the rubbery suits and silly sets look much more convincing in motion than in the stills released months ago.

    Race/Magic Issue

    by Michael Stern

First off, the story over on Yahoo mentions that old Clarke riff on technology unknown to us would seem like magic. Also, it explains the Asgardians in the film simply as an advanced race of beings who can travel between dimensions. They came across Earth a few thousand years ago in Norway, and were worshiped by the locals as the gods they seemed to be. So they are not actual gods per se, just the inspiration for a myth created during their first visit to our planet. Thus, their race and use of "magic" works fine in the established continuity of the Marvel Movie Universe. Personally, I think it can work fine that way. Anyone bitching about skin color or magic needs to grow the fuck up.

None of these mass market superhero films will every be great. They have to dumb them down for the masses and paint by the numbers so they can bring in the max amount of money, which is all the suits care about. But this does look like it has some good production values. Thor was never one of my favorite characters though, so I don't have much invested in it. At lease it looks like he won't be another wisecracking superhero.

    Terrible trailer!

    by DonRivella

The scenes in Asgard look like cut-scenes of a low budget video game. I have my doubts that the story and the direction will have enough weight to make me overlook just how ridiculous the set and costume design is. After all, this is from the director who made the funniest Frankenstein movie of all time (sorry, Mel).

Last Update of AICN Extra Stuff for the Weekend, Probably

    by kevinwillis.net

It's here: <br><br> http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/92278 <br><br> And you'd be able to click on that link and have it open up in a new document, if you were running it. Quick feature list:<br><br> Turns all links into clickable URLs! Hilite or Ignore certain posters right in the Talkback. Hilite your own posts. Reverse Talkback order. Restores the old format of the Talkbacks (colors and everything) and includes a running count of messages beneath the date and time stamp (now sent back to the right where they are supposed to be), in a format showing message "15 of 400". Like that. More stuff I don't remember because I'm tired. Works with Greasemonkey + Firefox, or just install as a userscript under Chrome. <br><br>Also, brings back the edit and delete buttons (if they exist) under Chrome.

    by Tandemar

It's not War and Peace or Shakespeare for pity's sake...it's a comic. They were called comics because they were mostly humourous at the beginning...so unless you come up with another name for the damn things, you can't expect anything overly deep and meaningful.

...but I see a movie where 1/4 of the content is kickass, Asgardian fantasy, and the other 3/4 are generic, Earth stuff. I very much want this movie to be good, but after watching this and the previous preview, NOTHING outside of Asgard looks interesting.

Terrible....? No way. It's not the best I have ever seen, but it's not terrible. I too thought that Asgard looked liked something budgeted from a BBC Doctor Who episode, but shit- there's plenty of time to put things right before it's locked. As a trailer it did what it said on the tin- whetted mosts appetites to see more Thor/Destroyer/Loki action come 2011.

I completely agree with jimdigriz37. For a start this isn't a factual historical epic and why complain that they're not all white but not that they aren't speaking in Scandinavian accents or that the dialogue is all in English? In this version of the story they're another race, they're not from Norway, they were worshiped by them. Remember that bloke that did that speech about people being judged by the content of their character not the colour of their skin?.... Anyone? IT'S SECONDARY CHARACTERS IN FICTIONAL TALES.

Apple's policy on crazy restrictions to their devices means you can't play Flash content. Trailer plays fine on my Samsung Galaxy S so blame Apple, blame Steve Jobs, Blame yourself for buying into the insane Apple lifestyle but do not blame Marvel! Trailer is tighter than the comiccon version and has some nice fight scene additions. Love that shot of Molojnir being thrown at the Ice giant and then returning to Thor's hand!!! This could do as well as Iron Man. I hope it has a good Soundtrack to give it some soul!

I won't even try to guess what deities they're supposed to represent, because judging by this sleep-inducing trailer, that giant shit pile of a "movie" has about as much to do with the myths as a TV series with "Xena", anyway (and it looks like a cheap TV series, too) - but still... yikes.

Thor doesn't have an origin, you stupid fucks

    by Chewbacca_Khan

This isn't an origin movie because Thor is a god and has always been one. Now, if by origin you mean the mere mortals have to figure it out, then you're just misusing the word. The trailer looks right. Show it to someone not familiar with the comics and see what they think. Then do the same with the GL trailer. I did that and the GL trailer generated a "That looks stupid. What's it about?" because there's no explanation of the Green Lanterns or what the Ring does. This trailer got a "That looks cool. I want to see that." because the look and feel of Asgard is recognizable, not necessarily as Asgard, but as a mystical realm of super-beings.

But for the love of ygdrasil, put conversion resources into movies that can use it. Take old footage from silent films and show me chaplin and keaton in 3D. Show me that cowboy from Great Train Robbery in color 3D with surrounding sound and his peacemaker's bullets flying into my face. Another thing that bothers me is that according to actual Norse Mythology, Heimdall is called "hvítastr ása" which translates to "whitest of the Æsir".</p> <p></p> <p>Hogun, according to the comic books is not Æsir nor Asgard by birth but is a warrior whose homeland was destroyed by Mogul of the Mystic Mountain. In fact, he usually looks Mongolian or Asian in the comic books. This was an evolution from Stan Lee's original intent to base Hogun on several of Charles Bronson's film characters.</p> <p></p> <p>The only part I disliked was Hemsworth's Aussie accent when he said "Oh no, this is Earth, isn't it?". Perhaps he said Earth because he knew the two human females wouldn't know what Migard was.</p> <p></p> <p>I'm looking forward to seeing this in 2D.</p>

    by Subtitles_Off

I told the old blue-hair scanning my groceries for the beep Happy Holidays, and she CORRECTED me! "Merry CHRISSSSSSSSSSSSSTmas," she hissed...So I told her to get over herself and asked where her manager was. I wonder if that gave her the spirit of the season...Blue-hair: "Why do we even have to let the Jews and Hell-bound into our store?"...Manager: "I know, I know. If the government would just leave us alone, we could have a good American Christmas like The Founding Fathers wanted us to."...Blue-hair: "I over-charged him for pears, too, just like you told us to."...Manager: "You're doing a fine job."...Over the intercom: Clean-up in Aisle Four. Aisle Four...clean-up, please...Manager: "Ah, fukken liberals!"

Heimdall is black, Jane Foster is a Jew

    by happyboy

Tony Stark is a Jew. Natasha Romanoff is a Jew. Samuel L Jackson is LOUDMOTHERFUCKER. On one hand, it's stupid as fuck that Norse Gods aren't Scandinavian especially if it's stunt casting motivated by $$$ or a misguided sense of multiculturalism. On the other hand would you all have such an issue if you weren't conditioned to look at everything with "black v white" hypersensitivity? Isn't Jane Foster WASP in the comics? She's a central asian/middle easterner in the movie as represented by the ethnicity of her actress, using your reasoning. She's also no longer a nurse. OH THE HORROR/ Obviously Hollywood isn't going to show us a black Moses or black David Ben-Gurion any time soon but if the biggest issue with this movie turns out to be a black Heimdall, your estimation of this POS vastly overshoots mine.

    COULDN'T RESIST...

    by RowKseat25

Is there someone in Hollywood who reads scripts and then says "you need to make the delivery of that dire-logue even worse that it was written"... "This is Earth riiight?"... I'm praying there is a Wikilalalandleaks website up and running in 2011 that is actually critical of the current studio system... anyone game? coz you won't find any crit of the studios here folks! That used to happen... many 'dark of the moons' ago... before the rot set in... and from what I'm reading from posters of late... there is something rotten in Denmark... You know, a site that doesn't just fold because they got a glowing green piece of shit merchandise... or a desperate exclusive screening... I'm a film geek, always will be and I still love my Superman Returns glowing green Kryptonite shard... but I paid for it... and wouldn't waste your time writing an article about it... Trafalgar Square (that's were the last London student riots took place) is this site... worthy of getting trashed... Camp 2 keep wasting your dimes... then bitching... then paying more dimes to see the follow up... in Hologram 3-Dzzzzzz because the trailer looked so cool... Camp 1 I salute you! I love you man! See you on some other site.

    Aint It Cool Schadenfreude...

    by Zounds

Numerous other sites dedicated to films and or comic book movies have a ratio of about 7:1 in favour of this newest, Thor trailer. Perhaps the problem of AICN Talkback are the participants creating a negative environment who are actively looking for deficiencies. It seems once "they" do, a mob mentality envelops the thread despite evidence to the contrary. Not to say that there aren't actual trailers, movies, reviews that clearly present as deficient, but the examples of the same which are clearly not definable in negative terms, somehow find themselves under this AICN Schadenfreude, perhaps an activity worth of it's own section on the site. As a fan of the title, for about 30 years, through it's ups and downs, it's horrible live action incarnations, infrequent animated appearances, and recent media overflow in anticipation of the major motion picture, I'm happy just to see certain sequences done well. Ideally, I would like the movie to be devoid of certain studio drawbacks (ie Rushed effects, executive mandated plot lines, miscast roles, etc...). But for what it is and what it could be in the context of film history, I'll look for the good and err on the side that before I experience the whole thing in a theatre of hopefully like-minded movie-goers -- with a few generations introducing and being introduced to the mythos -- Ill reserve judgment, good or bad and do my best to incorporate the suspension of disbelief in this overly shameless, over stimulated, authentically uninformed cynical mass that seems to to do it's very best to spoil as much as it can, when it can and where it can.

Predators was sooo hot... until we saw it (I never did)... Transformers 2 was shit hot (never saw it)... until you saw it... countless movies the owners of this site said you'd dig... but you didn't... begs the question... what service are AIC providing?... apart from sucking up to studios? We are all film geeks that's why we were here right?... but we are geeks for a reason... we know more than anyone what makes a film worthy of movie geekdom... quality... plot... characters... as well as the eye candy...find it yourself... don't rely on this site... it's sown up with studios... or go watch Transformers 3 and then bitch about how bad it was... this site has become tooo self-indulgent... not serving us... the film nerdoids... of which I am one... Honestly, what were the last geekout 'classic' movies you can remember? I'd say Rings trilogy... if you say Transformers you are not a film geek... you are lost.

And it does look better than Green Lantern so far.

Empire or Phantom? I rest my case.

I'm not sure why, but Natalie Portman seems wrong for this kind of fantasy movie (kind of like she felt wrong in the Star Wars movies). It'll be interesting to see how they make this positioning of mythological gods into regular action Hollywood universe feel plausible. Hopefully it has a good story, the kind of story you you could recount the parts of and tell someone. Speaking of Hopkins, I've been seeing parts of The Wolfman on cable... they had a lot of fun tearing people up.

all twittered up and shit. to paraphrase heinlein, one does not criticize the donkey when it flies, one wonders that it has sprouted wings. anyway, that trailer, holy shit. Was into the Norse Gods early because of Marvel, loved Donald Blake and Thor and Loki and the whole thing without really quite ever understanding it, except that Loki was like having a cool, weird, bad cousin. It was always a complicated, alienating and incoherent book, with one of those story lines that you get in the second tier books (like The Flash) where they keep changing shit around to try to sell more books. I lost patience with it early on (in the 1960s), without ever falling out of love with the character. Looking forward to this.

    by RowKseat25

I think movie geekdom... or filmnerdom has spilt into two camps... those who used to love film so much they could resite cool dialogue and character moments from movies as well as awesome effects scenes... and those who just get excited about effects scenes and 3-ZZZZZ D... and can't even remember the dire-logue... or don't want to... and dont even give a shit about characters... or a decent script... I am, will always be in camp 1... oldschool... AIC is camp 2... and from what I've read lately of posts... AIC are in a dwindling monority... the last few days of Bay ass-licking and that Green Lantern ring article by Harry has killed it for me... but I guess that's what you're best at... I'm going elsewhere... you know the places that AIC used to be... Merry Christmas to all Camp 1 movie geeks and to all those a Merry Christmas... Camp 2 have a great 3-D CGI characterless, plotless empty 2011 movie experience.

    He doesn't say "Midgard" because...

    by Chewtoy

...the trailer (and film) are intended to capture the interest of people who have no clue what the hell "Midgard" is. They needed to get the idea across that Thor is from another world and gets banished to Earth, not to some other world they've never heard of. It's possible that in the film they'll actually have an exchange that explains what Midgard is, but in the teaser trailer that's the last thing they need to spend exposition time on.

    by axelfoley

The movie itself made well over 100 mil domestically. But they should have made it an R instead of PG-13, not casted Affleck as the lead, and not made the trailer look like an MTV lead in. Those were among the many problems with that film. Oh and Mark Steven Johnson's a fucking hack piece of trash. Thor looked fine. But I still don't get why Marvel HAD to have Chris Evans as Cap. I don't even dislike Chris Evans, it's just 3,000 out of work, looking for work undiscovered blond guys in Tinseltown that are 21-32 years of age and they HAD to fucking have Chris Evans? I'll never figure it out. Even seeing his hair in those pics it's just sooooo forced. Steve Rogers is blond. Deal with it Marvel.

    Next summer: too much 3D

    by DiscoGodfather

We're hitting saturation point as it is. As of Christmas day there wil be five 3D movies in first run wide release (six if you count Megamind if it manages to hold on). Most 16+ screen multiplexes have no more than five 3D enabled theaters, the majority having no more than four. The studios will no doubt blame the theater owners for not upgrading fast enough, but that shit is expensive and the quality of the films is going to play a huge role. What's the motivation if studios keep shitting out post conversion "2.5D" that kind of makes money but shuts down repeat business? Sooner or later something's got to give. It'll be interesting to see what happens by next summer if theaters still aren't upgrading any faster.

    Looks great

    by Baryonyx

I love the trailer and I don't mind the look of Asgard: in the original comics Jack Kirby drew the place in a Flash Gordon-esque/sci-fi manner. I also don't care if actors of other ethnicities are used as gods. After all, they are meant to be super beings from another realm/dimension that were worshipped by Norsemen - but that doesn't mean the Gods have to BE Scandinavian-looking (That said, a non-Scandinavian Thor would've looked wrong.)

I like the Thor trailer and the new talkback!

    by Zardoz

I don't know why everyone's bitching about either one. The new talkback is pretty damn sweet: you can click on an individual post and see the hidden text, instead of having to scroll through hundreds of posts to find it, and you can reply to the individual posts, too! Very, very nice! And as I've said earlier, I thought this trailer looks much better than Green Lantern, which just looks silly and stupid. Thor looks serious, but fun, with just the right mix of action, drama and humor. (and good acting! cough!* Blake Lively! *cough!) Green Lantern looks like a hokey, jokey, kid's saturday morning cartoon show. (with a GAY, pedophilia-inspired costume!) When these movies were announced, Thor seemed like the dark-horse contender and GL seemed like the shoe-in, no-brainer film that would get it done right. After viewing the trailers for the two, I'd say the opposite is true and my money's on Thor, now.

    ** 1/2 stars at best

    by barboo2

Hmmmm...personally I'm having mixed feelings about the trailer. Actor is a little small for Thor, but otherwise looks the part...Dialogue seems pretty weak and the scene between 'Thor' and 'Odin' was just piss poor. Hopkins looks to be phoning this in for a paycheck. Odin should have deep gravitas and should make one piss one's pants just a bit. "Oh no...this is Earth?" Fail. This is Midgard to the Asgardians. Oh yeah...note to Hollywood PTB...Black comic fans didn't need for you to dip Heimdall in melanin...The Asgardians are Nordic! And we're ok with that. The good? Yeah...Seeing Mjolnir fly was tres cool. And the Destroyer was all kinds of awesome!

You are aware that they call them 'myths' for a reason? The first being that they aren't true. The second is that they reflect the mores, fears, desires and world-views of the people who created them, and since there are probably relatively few Norsemen working on Thor, I imagine, it seems logical that the film reflects our current reality. Which happens to include people of various skin colors.

  • Dec. 13, 2010, 8:21 a.m. CST

I've watched this trailer three times.

    by James_Camera_On

Once even in a theater, desperate to find something interesting. It wasn't there. The movie is a blank, a zero. I do agree that kicking Thor out of Valhalla or wherever he came from made a lot of sense, so the movie ended for me right there and a really short comic-book movie does have appeal. The lead actor (sorry, didn't catch the name) would make a good opponent for Stallone in Rocky VIII or whatever. But that's it. When the black transformer robot (I think that's what it was) showed up, I thought cool and if they had made the robot "Mudflaps" or "Skid" they would have had something. A cross-over with Thor Against the Transformers (that's right, T.A.T.) might have worked but as it is there's nothing. This is M3KST stuff. It writes its own laugh track. But wait. Remember that interactive movie experiment, "Mr. Payback"? I wonder if that idea could be revived (Better than 3-D!) and the audience gets to vote on whether to shove a cattle prod up his ass every time Mr. Thor appears. Yeah, I really hated this thing.

  • Dec. 13, 2010, 9:34 a.m. CST

The scenes in asgard look amazin and about Heimdall

    by knightriderzen

I dont think that heimdall' race was due to political correctness persay, but it may be due to that quote of the trailr, Asgard being the merging of science and magic. If you're a creationist, my heart goes out to you but Heimdal Ive heard from followers of these myths is supposed to be th scandinavian Noah and the father of the Aryan race. So Branagh is throwing this card at the scientific allusion to evolution. The 'Out of Africa" theory so-to-speak. I hope it remains an allusion and very sciencefiction, not something to club us over the head. Otherwise the asgardian scenes look straight out of Heavy Metal. Ozzie lent some songs for Iron Man, I wonder if its possible for Thor too.

To answer your question 1) Thor makes a snarling monster noise in the infirmary or wherever that place is, makes no sense 2) a classically-steeped, top-shelf, legendary, epic world should demand appropriate music, instead we get "du-du-du-du-du-du-DAA!" Beavis & Butthead guitar riffs. Who was in charge of making THAT decision? Talk about asleep at the wheel 3) I saw no sign of majestic, epic cinematography. This is freaking Thor, not Transformers. I'm not even a huge Thor fan mind you, but I know my comics well enough to know Thor deserves nothing but the HIGHEST LEVEL of treatment when put to film. As in "Rolls Royce" or "Bentley" treatment, not Lexus. Pisses me off.

  • Dec. 13, 2010, 12:41 p.m. CST

    Re: Astronut

    by MakNeil

Thanks for the reply, though, in reference to the snarling I didn't notice it, though it's hard to say what makes sense and what doesn't without seeing the film itself. I am not quite sure why the music irritates so much. It emphasizes action, which is what is happening in the trailer. This is probably why in one of the commercials for Tron: Legacy Daft Punk's track 'The Game Has Changed' is used, as opposed to, let's say 'Nocturne,' namely because it works for the scenes shown, though obviously does not determine what is used in the film in its entirety. I am sure there's plenty of sweeping, epic photography in the film, but do you really want to see it in the first trailer? It plays up the heroic angle, which–when you think about it–makes a lot of sense. When you're gambling with millions of dollars, scenery and breathtaking views are important, but you know that what is going to get arses in the seats is Thor kicking the shite out of the Destroyer, not the majesty of Asgard. And in reference to your last point, I am not sure that Thor isn't getting the "highest level" of treatment (though I am not quite sure what you mean by that because there are many crap movies that cost untold millions, it that's what you're judging by) because I haven't seen the film. And I am sure that you're aware that you cannot use a trailer to judge a film because the first two Transformers films had great trailers. Sure, they were crappy films, but their trailers were great.

    Black Heimdall

    by Hipshot

Makes more sense than the concept of Norse Gods, as a whole. Once you go down THAT rabbit hole, then I point out a simple fact: if these Gods exist, then they exist separate from the minds of the Norse bards who wrote about them. If this was a movie set in Asgard, pure mythology, then fine. But the minute these "Gods" interact with our world, then other interesting questions come to play: can someone please suggest the evolutionary forces that would create a humanoid species without also creating racial variation? I mean, you can't have it both ways. If they're a fantasy from the minds of the Norse, then sure, they'd all look like the Norse. But if they are "real" and live on another plane of existence, or are aliens, and the Norse simply managed to dream of their existence, and they look like humans...then, dammit, they can look like humans. You guys who think that the only reason to cast a black man in a movie is to please Al Sharpton are revealing yourselves. How about hiring him because he was the best for the job, and the casting director wasn't a bigot? Just casting "best" will sometimes reach outside the sacred halls of Caucasianland. And if you can't see that, the problem is in the mirror, not on the screen.

The trailer is not very good...

    by AsimovLives

... but it's a movie directed by Kenneth Branagh, who is one of my favorite actor and he has directed some movies i have quite loved a lot. So here's to hoping. Many times great movies had bad trailers. MASTER & COMMANDER is a case in point. If it had bween any other case, i might felt a bit more critical and pessimistic. but because it's Branagh, i'm hoping for the best. Meanwhile, i feel the need to rewatch WALLENDER.

Have you seen BATMAN BEGINS? Because Bale sure put a lot of musculature on him worthy of Arnold in his Conan days for the bat role.

  • If you feel the need to contrive issue for the sake of appearing authoritative, by all means, construct away. My comment spoke directly to the trailer,s_o. It spoke to it's perceived quality -- by much more than a 2:1 ration on other similar sites that somehow found it in their uninformed little hearts to render a positive response. The obvious thrust of my comment spoke to the absurdly disproportionate amount of negative reviews that seemed divorced from the overwhelming norm, everywhere else. Now whether it's the new architecture of the site, or just mob rules mentality, the amount of baseless (Though valid from opinion) negative commentary seemed something more than simple dislike. And if that isn't specific enough a comment to pass through your inspection on qualified Talkback merits, s_o then please, preface all of your replies with a definition of appropriate comment content. My comment was my opinion to the trailer's reception as something completely anomalous compared to other sites. I thought pointing it out for the sake of those that might enjoy the trailer, might be germane to the discussion. Where that advertises me in need of some educational appeal, is reaching isn't, s_o? Like really, dude...How ad hominem of you. Gumdrops to jelly beans, is about the difference between our two perceptions of my comment. It's not negativity per se, it was the amount. But if you actually read the comment and stopped trying to lure response with candy you might have picked that up, sport.

Incessant cynicism for it's own sake and enjoyment. And no, I'm not making a blanket statement that the genre is exclusively characterized as such. And yes, you should stop offering people candy...It's weird, man.

C'mon, Branagh, switch it up: use Peter Paul and Mary's "If I Had a Hammer."
