The AICN Situation!
WELCOME BACK
this is a hurried launch migration and we realize some of the obvious problems with the font and formating issues. be warned that some of the categorization is awry, so articles may appear in the wrong places on homepage at first, until we've stabilized everything.
...and the talkbacks are in a different configuration. We will address that when we get through a few other pressing items.
...and as some have noticed, not all the talkback history is there... it will be loaded back into the system in the next few days. to speed up the migration, only the first 50k talkbacks were loaded.
...and we need to apologize to the members of the ZONE. one of their cache servers they used for images was removed from the DNS. Not exactly the congratulations for your 5 year anniversary of being online. the fix is imminent.
...Apologies to the AICN Power Mod users. unfortunately the fix cannot be from us.
... There is/was an intermittent lag and synchronization problem with the servers. It is less evident now. It may be worse during daytime traffic. symptoms would be articles listing on the homepage disappearing, then reappearing, and delayed talkback posts.
thank you for your patience.

Holy crapo !

HOLY CRAP AN EDIT BUTTON!
-
I expected a bigger change tbh, but at least it's something. Now the site feels like it's from 2001 rather than 1996.
-
Is this the new design?
-
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, for shame! People don't have to be accountable for their ramblings anymore!
-
This is the big huge change? It's almost as pathetic as Billy Faulkner.......
-
Now we are in the 20th century
-

NOOOOOOooooo. The ability to delete! Now people aren't accountable for their insane rants!
by iamnicksaicnsn
Now people aren't accountable for their insane rants! Let's see what functions are available right off the bat... Length of Subject change? Auto paragraphs?
-
Hmmmmm
-
...an edit button for AICN talkbacks could be a very good thing. We'll see.
-
Does this work yet?
-
The site looks good.
-
other than the horrible talkback look. Its pretty rough on the eyes trying to separate posts... most places and charts use alternating colors to differentiate different items, here they're using it to split the header from the body of the post, but have no real delineation between posts (at least in Firefox, haven't looked in anything else). I did notice that there seems to a very slight line between posts, but its almost invisible and doesn't help. There also seems to be a LOT of dead space in the talkback. *shrugs*
-
It looks kinda different. Other than that...no big changes.

So the changes are no capital-letter screennames & a bad font
by SpyGuy
Not really feeling this, guys. Sorry.
-
So what changed? You kept the horrible design, and just made it uglier and still not edit button either.
-

-
I swear I came on and thought I had accidentally hit the zoom button on my browser.
-
I refuse to ascend.<p> I'm a descender by design. Pls tell me this shit is just a temporary fuck up?<p> It's like reading a book from the back page through to the front.
-
You mean actually going to be reporting news that isn't ripped from other news sites??
-
Only one of these words is correct.
-
It's bright and shiny.
-
Alls I gotta do is scroll. RIP witty talkback subject headers. Also I think I lost the capitalization in my name. And it just kinda looks the same to me, but I do like the new format. Also, lemmie see if there's an edit function...
-
scratchmonkey, haha! In an ascending thread the laugh comes before the joke.
-
I don't want to post many comments but would love to Thumbs Up or Down talkback comments.. something!!
-
During your crash(es) I managed to view some of your website source code. Drupal is a good way to go. I'm rebuilding several of my sites in Drupal; I'll try not to steal too many of your site design ideas. Perhaps I'll take only the good ones...
-
Of whatever the hell it's supposed to be. It's always just looked like a rorschach test to me.
-
...you could scan hundreds of posts in seconds before diving in. I LIKED THE WHOPPER THE WAY IT WAS!
-
This is not enough. Where is the like Button? Or DIGG? Come On Harry!!! Do or Die!!! Look at my log in!! I have been reading AICN for YEARS!!!!!! You and I used to kick it in the AICN Chat... Dude!! You need to do more than this!!
-
It feels like it.
-
UPSIDE DOWN GODDAMMIT
-
Check check. Pfffff.
-
Is it?
-
I am a web developer, and this is such a simple thing to add. I don't understand.
-
and has been replaced with a mid 90's site design.
-
But.... Guess what? Mesa Luved It!
-
I honestly don't know why the fuck some websites list comments newest to oldest. It doesn't read easily. CHANGE IT!!!
-
I thought we were all banned the last couple of days
-
gross
-
Like the new layout!
-
Always, always bad. Well it is for a couple of hours until you get used to it and can't remember what things were like before the change. Just wait it out.
-
and upside down comments!
-
..than to others, lil' AICN. If not basketball, then how about accounting, hm? Doesn't accounting sound exciting, too?<p> *consoling shoulder pat*
-
Test test
-
Dammit.
-
...this is VERY UNNERVING...
-
test
-
Ok Warp Factor 12
-
Well, at least the site is loading today and not taking 10 minutes to do so.
-
But this talkback format is really atrocious. Not trying to be a hater, but it's hard on the eyes and seems like a big step backwards. I truly hope this is not the final product.
-
It DOES ascend. I really, really don't think thats very cool. It's not natural!
-
...I'm gonna use this account again. :)
-
History gone...change fucking sucks.
-
THIS IS EVEN UGLIER THAN BEFORE. AINT IT UGLY NEWS
-
...if worse comes to worst, there's always shelter.
-
Be interesting to see what is new when you've got rid of the gremlins. Can we paragraph without HTML like, you know every other website out there? Can we? Just testing....
-
My lord, this could go on and on; my lastness. What power...
-
Gone! All gone!
-
Holy shit. If this IS it... well, goodbye 1997 and hello 1998. <p> <p> Only just managed to get in but... Posts listed newest to oldest? That's just plainly... wrong. <p> <p> The whole site format is still antiquated beyond belief. <p> <p> Oh and the TBs were far better with just subject headings to glance through before diving in. <p> <p> And if there is a "DELETE POST" function... fuck that. It may have just neutered the one thing that made AICN worth hanging out at - talkback wars, insane meltdowns and general shitkicking fun! <p> <p> This IS a halfway house, right? This isn't the full, done, "revamped" deal?
-
I'm gonna test this out.
-
Told you so.<P>No more time stamps? Bye-bye simu-po'ing.<P>Pedalback killed this bitch.
-
gone!
-
First!
-
Harry, kudos for attempting to join the 21st century but what is the point of Twitter and Facebook integration if you can't even auto paragraph? And NO edit button. It means that people can't go back on what they say without admitting they were wrong in the first place.
-
That's a blow to the ego.
-
Fucked.
-
Main site better be fixed by then!
-
Get rid of it now!!!!!
-
can we edit now?
-
Still frikken wonky.
-
Harry, people will forgive you ANYTHING if you make it so we can EDIT our posts before posting! <p>Love & Peace<p>.Fish x
-
My anti-change rant never showed up.
-
They got rid of time stamps? <BR><BR>And paragraph breaks too? <P>Really? <BR><BR>And new posts go to the top? Ugh.
-
I thought it might be part of the world wide wikileaks shutdown.
-
That truly suxx.
-
My post just disappeared. It was there, and then it was gone. Oh, and HTML line and paragraph breaks don't work. Nice step backwards, AICN.
-
Edit and Delete magically appear. As someone with HTML knowledge might have something to do with the re-vamp. Ooooooohhhh exciting times.
-
He'll never get it. For the majority of the people who come to this site, there is nothing more "pressing" than Talkback. Nobody comes here for Harry's reviews or Herc's ratings fetish. They come here to call Pazuzu an asshole.
-
...goes from 1999 to 2002! Way to catch up!
-
Seriously. Huge chunks of this thing keeps disappearing and reappearing. I've a feeling this isn't what it is going to end up as. Maybe we should all just come back next Monday.
-
It's like internet 1997
-
yeah, just "ehhhh." I'll wait until all the dust settles before I start crying mutiny.
-
Gone baby, gone.
-
Too bad we can't write more than three sentences without it becoming an unreadable mess.
-
... just like it always was.
-
shut down the site. This is like inviting people to dinner while your house is being renovated.
-
lame
-
Everything is simply fucked up at the moment.
-
with the AICN community for a few days?
-
Looks like they are restoring them as we speak
-
I saw something about Newsradio in the "news" column and got excited. You tricked me.
-
these Talkbacks fail on so many levels, I really hope someone gets fired over this or i'm not gonna renew my membership when it expires
-
Yay! I was worried it might actually start looking good. This is a load off my mind.
-
Weird. I don't know if it's a good idea, but I'm not going to be able to get used to it. I know that. Wow. Just, wow.
-
Ha ha what a clusterfuck
-
The Talkbacks are now listed chronologically in reverse to what they were before. . The primitive HTML codes which worked before ( <br> <p> etc... ) are no longer parsed correctly. . The Maltheus mod (which was damn cool) is obviously broken. . There's STILL no edit function, or PREVIEW function. So basically, we're still about 10 years behind every single website out there. . Well done fellas.
-
Until someone else posts. Then they'll be first.<br><br>Ha-ha! Also testing for line breaks. I see that <b>just hitting return</b> still doesn't work. They didn't want to fix that?
-

for the win!
-
yay! And I tried to edit an old post, and it failed. Yay! So, anyway. <blockquote>Are there blockquotes now?</blockquote> . . . no? What about Horizontal Rules? <hr><br><br>No. Fine, I'm bitterly disappointed.
-
...BAAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCCKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Or did the talkback posts lose their time stamps? Not that it matters much...
-
live by the sword, die by the sword.
-
Right now it just seems weird, but that could be just because it's different. I was expecting...more?
-
For a site that was so ahead of its time in terms of concept, it's bizarre that it seems to be stuck somewhere in 1997 in terms of functionality.

...but it doesn't actually work. How's that for progress? So, non-functioning edit button, reverse order posting, and now we don't even have HTML BR and P. This is worse than the 1998 posting we had before. Now we're back to 1996/7.
-
To whom it may concern, please to the oldest first layout. This layout is against the laws of god
-
What's the point of having sleep deprived 4am online rants if you can edit or delete them and not have someone point out what an arsehole you were being?
-
Is the fonts. Everything has got extra kerning. It's making my head hurt to read anything. Anyone want to guess what this is a preview for? . . . Theming. Not for us, but for advertisers. So they can sell a theme up for Tron legacy and then make the whole site look like a Tron Legacy site for a week or something. Re: AICN Power Mod--yes, a new format will break the mod. Maltheus can either re-write the mod, which he may, or something. I might create an AICN mod, with the caveat it will be more limited than Maltheus's, because I want it to work with both Greasemonkey in Firefox and Chrome. The mod I write will fix anything they don't fix. ;) If they design it so you can still display HTML instead of removing it, the way old Talkbacks did, I could write a mod to parse <font color="red">I am a geek!</font> into actual displayed HTML. Just a thought. How do long URLs display now? http://www.wooteam.com/albums.php I would also make (some) links clickable. Assuming they aren't now.
-
Roll your mouse over your subject line.
-
This new update is pretty spare. <br> <br> But Kurt Russel laughed so it's OK.
-
THIS IS THE SEPTEMBER 11TH OF WEBSITE DESIGNS
-
I think I see vagina.
-
A lowly floor moppah, but sooner or later you dance with THE CHOPPAH! New shitty format calls for a new shitty handle.
-
Nice retro. Oh, that's not what you were going for? Sorry.
-
testing... testing...
-
That reverses the sequence of the Talkback, if there's a demand for that.
-
GET YOUR FUCKING MONEY BACK! Seriously. [p] I'll code you a fucking site for a reasonable fee. [p] This looks like it was put together by illiterate Indian contractors, working from the toilet-free slums of Mumbai for 10 cents a week.
-
just to "TRONITIZE" the site for Legacy's release. That's a relief! As for the EDIT button...looks like if you are in a flame war with someone...ya better copy and paste their ORIGINAL posts for future reference....lest they go back and "edit" the bullshit they were flinging around later, once they have been proved wrong. They can't edit YOUR re-post!
-
all I read was "wagga wagga boom boom goo goo."
-
This is really fucking ugly. Every line of text is an eyesore and now you've got me contributing to the collective headache. WHY HARRY? WHY?!? The site was fine as it was. The unique thing about this site, to me, has always been that it never seems to change, because if it aint broke then don't fix it... Well now it seems that it has changed... And now that it has changed, it seems that it has broken. Lame, Harry. Very lame news.
-
...with more than 13 years of experience in launching large scale media sites, I'd say you need to start dealing with professionals, Harry. This should've been seamless. No need for this type of interruption of service. Even if you had completely changed the site's server environment, back-end, and front-end design, there's no reason for it. I love this site, and many times over the years I've thought of offering my services just to have a hand in it's day to day operation. This shit is amateur hour.
-
This is hilarious.
-
Looks fine to me. I, for one, am glad we finally have an edit function. I hate it when I make a really good point but somehow spell 'point' wrong.
-
It sucks guys. It sucks.
-
is it me you're looking for?

He wants to know when Talkback will be fixed.

i just got off the phone with the new aicn, this years skinny tomboy beanpole little miss sunshine that has a beer and cheets on his wife. in closing im loving this redesign clusterfrak!!! who are the ad wizards who came up with this new tb.
-
Agreed dude, I to am a professorial as well and I would be shot at my job if I rolled something out in this manner. I mean unless his database is completely fucked up, i really don't see how it takes this long to do any of this.
-
really big spaces everywhere!!
-
WHERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
did i break this?
-
I didnt think that was possible. I expected some redesign making the site join the 21st century... instead it's a slightly different format, actually a step DOWN from what it was before...ugh.
-
Yep. Ugly -- and poorly designed. If this is not the finished product, please go offline for a few days till you get your shit together.

I'm not sure I'll get used to posting ABOVE the talkbacks...
-
Amen. Clusterfuck.
-
because I mouse over the subject line like someone said and nothing happens. Is this some joke I missed? Or does this fuction not work in IE9 or Chrome. Because if not epic fail right there.

1...2...3...

Harry you got to fix that. Thats a big one bro.

T'would be quite a feat!

-
...make sure you have Javascript enabled. Don't worry about it though, it doesn't actually work.
-
There's a lot of meaningless code in the mod itself, due to I was originally developing it for the old AICN format. Most of what it did is moot now . . . but it does one thing right now that some might appreciate. It will turn the <br> and the <p> you see right now and turn it into it's appropriate HTML equivalent. It will also convert an <hr> if you want. It will do more in the near future. That being said . . . find it here: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/92278 . . . <br><br>It works with Greasemonkey and Firefox, or as a native user script in Chrome.
-
I asked Santa for it.
-
And I'd like to try and fix the formatting. Anybody have a screen shot of the old AICN? Or maybe I'll just use the Internet Wayback machine. Repeat: AICN Extra Stuff Mod restores <br> and <p> in the Talkbacks (and ads <hr> ) for anyone running the mod. <br><br> http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/92278
-
....What. The. Fuck????? <p> No really; What? <p> You're paying money for this Harry? Ask for a refund..... <p> <p> <p> .....NOW!!!
-
ITS THE END OF TIMES!! THE BANNED HAVE RISEN FROM THE GRAVE!!! <p>FORMATTING FAILING US!! MODDERS EVERYWHERE!!
-
<script> alert("This better not work") </script>
-
This fucking sucks *smash* fucking sucks *crash* fucking sucks *bash!* I would have left it alone, nothing was wrong with the site before.
-
Uhhhhh, how did I get here?
-
i feel like a child. hey its d. vader !
-
So Orcus can read this on the crapper

BATMAN BEGINS sucked! Everything I ever typed about it before it was released turned out to be EXACT. Suck me now, you fukks!
-
would have been my top addition. I never log into shit with my facebook account (begging for trouble) same with twitter. With Disqus I can be randomly annoying on multiple sites without ever having to login. Plus if you register it has edit and built in validation with a like button. That's web 2 point whatever the fuck the future is.
-
D.VADER?
-
We don't say "retards."
-
It seems everything is reversed in the new bizarro talkbacks. The first post is the last post and "Last" is the new "First".
-
so weird
-
LAST
-
it's the new FIRST
-
I like that.
-
"Recent"
-
I like that.
-
Did you hear? "unfortunately the fix will cannot be from us!" Darn..I think Just rubbing your rhubarb Knowles!
-
Shit better get real and my mind better get blown when this is done. Coz right now - Clusterfuck.
-
For a moment there i thought they were actually going to improve things around here. Glad to see the more things change, the more they stay the same.
-
Suck it, Faulkner.
-
But when I tried to edit my post it wouldn't let me. Suffice to say maybe AICN is about to join the 21st Century with an EDIT button.
-
It's part of a global cover-up to prevent BNAT speculation that this year's offering will be a runthrough of all seven POLICE ACADEMY films in reverse order.
-
My head hurt! Me not understand why first comment at bottom? This make no sense. Me hungry
-
Lots of extra white space and let's see if paragraph returns are automatic (hits return). Instead of those big "spoiler" boxes why not just have spoiler headlines the brown color? The bars are distracting. Just too much white space all around, IMHO.
-
I started talking about the EDIT button first but my comments didn't post.
-
Its coming up pretty soon, aye? Hopefully all of this shit with the site doesn't hamper the running of BNAT. Couldn't be there this year, but I always love reading about it.
-
Every other post either doesn't post or they disappear after being posted.
-
The site looks and functions worse than ever. Who's coding this website anyway, someone who has a "How to.." book in one hand? You're getting jipped Harry, JIPPED! And why the hurried launch? What's the rush? These so called "changes" don't excite me and doesn't make me want to come back.
-
i genuinely feel like i'm in the twilight zone
-
Posts keep appearing and disappearing. This is fun.
-
is as wide as Harry.
-
TEST.
-
nooo!!!!!
-
One minute there's one set of talk backs then after posting or a refresh it's a completely different set of talk backs. It's like the Twilight Zone of talk backs.
-
hello?
-
I just refreshed and there were no posts in the talk back but now they're back.
-
Every other time I refresh. There are no posts in the Talkback.
-
Why does it automatically post if I hit the ENTER key while typing in the SUBJECT line but not in the COMMENT box? As long as we're fixing the site. How about dealing with that too?
-
and the last shall be first. These truly are the End Times for AICN. I don't think I'll be staying after this.
-
EVER to happen on AICN. Welcome back, D. Vader.
-
that homely 'baby shit on the walls' look.
-
It's still there. :(
-
If AICN isn't running properly I can't waste enough time in a day. I have to resort to doing productive things. I tried visiting Mori over at HitFix; but that damn page is just too busy for my eyes. So now I'm stuck lurking an AICN page that more often than not hasn't even been loading, for the past four days.
-
so <p>this? or this? <i>this</i> this
-
ola?
-
work?
-
test. test. test test. test test. test test. test test. test test. test test. test test. test test. testtest. testtest. testtest. testtest. testtest. testtest. testtest. testtest. testtest. testtest. testtest. testtest. testtest. testtest. testtest. testtest. testtest. testtest. testtest. testtest. testtest. test test. test.

Please take this ugly shit down while you're working on it. The longer you allow us to witness this travesty, the more users you lose. Oh, and consider a new web designer. This one sucks ass. Thanks for your attention.
-
Harry, there are two issues I hope will be tended to. First, the backwards talkback is terrible. I don't post much, but I prefer reading this stuff like one big conversation. Now I'll be reading the responses to posts before seeing the original post! Lame lame lame! Second, there's way too much space in the subject bar and the actual comment section. Slim those down a bit, please! Other than that, great! Good luck with BNAT.
-
just to "TRONITIZE" the site for Disney's benefit!
-
JUST FUCKING WORK!!!
-
anyone else notice that there is like 4 billion miles of lateral space? is this where the kiddie pron will go?
-
Not only did it work, but all my new posts came up. That's the power of swearing friends.

Best thing to happen to AICN in... ever.
-
We need to keep this TB going FOREVER.
-
This is my third attempt at posting. And I'm not gonna bother with the line breaks, 'cos they don't work. This is kinda hilarious. Trumpeting a big overhaul of the site and it comes back as an even MORE badly designed version of its former self... and crucially - it's clusterfucked the Talkbacks. The only reason ANYONE comes here anymore, and the one thing no other site can offer in quite the same way. Uncensored, unexpurgated, unmoderated rantings and ravings and grudges and meltdowns. FUCK edit buttons and the ability to delete posts. No one was asking for those. Just like no one was asking for the facility to log in via FB or Twitter. No one in their right mind does that, it's an open invitation for your Facebook or Twitter accounts to be spammed to fuckery. <p> <p> Awww, Harry man. You've been ripped off in a major way, you poor sucker.
-

that pops in to tell us we're all whiners; that the site looks fine; that we should be thankful for what we've got; that this is a private site; etc? William Faulkner, where art thou?
-
I will stay the fuck away from this site until you can properly revamp it - just so I can keep my lunch down!
-
Literally.
-
some font and formatting changes, and a few tweaks to how the comments work? I love the site, been coming here since right around November of 96, but I gotta say it's looking a little long in the tooth, despite these minor tweaks. I was expecting a pretty big overhaul...
-
You could have two dozen short posts on your screen at once in the old version. Now you have like 5 one line posts filling your screen. Constantly scrolling now! Also the formatting is way off as the comment box is narrow and the actual posts large.
-
That reminds me. Let's see if <b>bold</b> works. How about <a href="http://www.aintitcool.com">URLs</a>? We already know that line breaks <BR> and paragraph breaks <P> don't work, and you demonstrated that <i>italics</i> don't work. Ohh, how about <s>strikeout</s> and <u>underline</u>? <BR><BR> <blockquote>What about blockquote?</blockquote> <BR><BR> <code>Or code?</code> <BR><BR> <pre>Or pre?</pre>
-
Let's see how the TB is working now?
-
AGAIN The TB that is. I have to explain this since my other post may or may not ever appear.
-
It looks like that's why the comments are changing. You post on one server, reload the page from another server in the cluster, but they haven't been synched, so your post doesn't appear right away. God damn, this is a fucking MESS.
-
The future... is bleak. :(
-
"THIS IS IT?!" Get the fuck over it. The construction is still in progress. This is exactly the same reaction as when there's some dinky teaser trailer released. Quit being an impatient infant. And this site should just be shut down for the time being. I don't think anyone needs to see this.
-
...but it also ain't finished. As stated by the creditless God-text above, and your eyeballs. My expectations have been tempered, but not defeated. NASA may not be announcing contact with intelligent artificial life anytime soon, but AICN will cardiac arrest over the millennium finish line and make it strange jowl-beard first into the 21st century, if only barely. I believe?
-
Get AICN back on track soon. I need my geek fix. :)
-
50% of opening screen useless space
-
Says that this is not how the site is supposed to look. Rollback man, roll it back.
-
This is an improvement?! Ah, AICN, u makes me LOL once more...
-
This is awful.
-
I am no expert on internet revenue (actually, I know fuck all about it) but I do know that it relies on page/ad views. Now that the article and the TBs are on one page wont that effectively halve the amount of page views, and therefore, revenue? Or are only unique visits counted? Or am I completely wrong altogether?
-
Maybe soon. We'll see.
-
And in case no one else has mentioned it....this BLOWS!!!
-
Harry, why didn't you guys just go with Disqus? It worked well enough for Engadget.
-
But at least it's not CHUD. I guess that's something.

-
You can't tell everyone on one hand to get over it and not complain about the look and then say in the next breath that they need to just take it down til it's done and no one needs to see it. They're putting this out there, therefore they should expect reaction (i'd even go so far to say they did it intentionally to gauge what peoples' reaction would be). If this isn't what the end product is gonna look like, then they should say something to that affect to assuage everyone's concerns. Would be a really easy thing to do. But you are right that the gen public shouldn't be seeing this. I can't believe whomever is in charge of this doesn't know that you do the migration on a test server and get it fuckin tested and finalized before you put it into production. Hell, you could even keep the old one going up until the new one is ready, then capture any minor delta that happened in the meantime late at night once the new one's in production. I hope Harry isn't spending any money on this...
-
It really needs more tweaking
-
Fuck him for apparently giving you a reason to exist. Fuck him for providing you witha forum to vent your vapid pointless vomit. Fuck him for enabling you to waste the precious time of those much more worthy of that oxygen that you so cavalierly waste. None of which ever cost you a dime. Yes FUCK HIM, otherwise you'd be wasting your time fantasizing about a plot to kidnap the cheerleader that lives next door, instead of posting here. Sorry if this has already been addressed elsewhere. Feel free to cut and paste where appropriate, just be sure to give credit.
-
seriously harry why is this being updated like its hosted on geocities. all of the new stuff should have been ready to roll out.

New version of AICN looks horrid. It's harder to read and harder to navigate. Hope improvements are coming soon...

This new font/layout hurts my freaking eyes. Might as well go comic sans, or that goofy font Avatar used for the Na'vi.
-
The dojo feels like it's just snorted a monster line of Charlie and now it's seeing things in a different way. Harry, you've signed off on this? Pls tell your web designer politely NOT to put the most recent posts on top. I know it kinda makes sense from a logical perspective but as a long time talkbacker believe me it makes NO sense from a conversational perspective. Quite simply you reply to what someone says and you're response is read before their question. It really damages the 'conversations between talkbackers' element of this site. It's a big difference to what you had going on before. A BIG difference and not for the better imho. Pls properly weigh up the pros and cons between an ascending or descending thread before making your final decision - it's a seemingly subtle change that will have majorly negative ramifications on the coolness that is 'aicn talkback'. If you ONLY want the talkbackers to comment in isolation upon the article then put the most recent posts on top. If you want the talkbackers to ALSO be able to bicker, argue, debate amongst each other then put the recent posts at the bottom. Your call (cool)?
-
I don't know how/why, but I like to blame her.
-
My "my colon sucks" account was banned, like, half a decade ago. Why? Never could figure it out, truth be told. I posted a bunch of speculative titles for the fourth Indiana Jones, went to sleep, woke up, and discovered that every post I'd ever made on AICN was gone. I never made no inflammatory remarks or nothin'.

...just about everything about the old format was perfect. I guess you can add some stuff if you have to, but otherwise I liked everything about it. I liked that you could choose between full talkback and subject only pages for easy scrolling, I liked the compact look that allowed you to see dozens of posts on the page at the same time for easy scanning, I liked the more natural feel of the conversation flowing down instead of up (essential), I liked the reply box at the bottom of the page (allowing you to see the last several posts while you type). It all worked together to make for the best full contact talkback melee around.

The AICN Situation? We get to see your new six-pac, Big Guy?
by BadMrWonka
I keed, I keed. I'm sure once a few glitches get put through, AICN will be back to normal in no time. <p> Personally, I would be in favor of a preview option if people really want it (although I always wonder why people can't just read what they've wrote BEFORE clicking 'post'), but NOT an edit function. People say outlandish shit in the talkbacks, and they need to be called on it. if you could go back and change what you said, it wouldn't be the same. <p> as for other options like threading, or specific replies, I don't know...I mean, AICN talkbacks being one huge heap of yap is part of the charm. when I hear someone say, "I don't want to read through this whole talkback to see if this was addressed already or not, so I'll just say it..." then I know they're not a REAL talkbacker, in my book. I've waded through it all, if I have anything to say. that's the deal. <p> a better search function for the site is a MUST, though. really, you should be able to quickly search by author, topic, title, date...hell, even by talkbacker name, right?<p> and I agree that a simple talkbacker profile thing would be pretty cool. maybe make it so you have to have contributed to like 100 talkbacks before you get the option for a profile, to prevent spamming nonsense, or just plain bullshit. it would be a great way for talkbackers that have the same interested to easily connect outside of AICN, and share other projects they're working on, without littering the boards with links.
-
And you too Cobra-Kai. How goes it one and all? This is, ah... interesting.
-
The new TB interface is inexplicably horrible. As a sometime IT expert of sorts and web designer of past years, I can say in all honesty that there is NO WAY this should be some sort of "real time" work in progress. This development should have all been done offline and the transfer should've been made seamlessly. But the old site began falling to pieces, so they panicked and pushed the migration date way up. Someone fucked up. Big time. Observe the latest TWITTER post from Harry: -- headgeek666 Harry Knowles What I've seen of the new site on my phone looks completely wrong, from the version that was offline, changes coming to the atrocity -- That was six hours ago. Someone done fucked the FUCK up.
-
I mean.... That's right. Dot. Dot. Dot.
-
Watch out though, Vades. Ol' Billy Faulkner has it in for ya! He wrote, "One of the current glitches.... ...is that d.vader is back. Don't worry.....we'll fix that glitch and remove that crybaby....hold on, folks....." Oh--now all of a sudden he IS an AICN mod. We'll see about that. CRAZY ellipses, huh? That nutty Faulkner...

-
'scuse me - how about a muthafuckin refresh button?
-
...but man, having the tb form at the top of the page, and the posts listed in reverse (without timestamps) is gonna take A LONG time to get used to. <br><br> Also, the subject line is too large. Having the date on the same line as the handle looked so much better. Really, the old setup was much better.....that is, everything BUT the quick talkback form. This new one? Fucking sweet. I can't tell you how much I hated posting long responses in the old cramped box. And looking them over was even worse. This is a HUGE step up, thanks gang.

My AICN Extra Stuff Mod has been updated. It now resorts the talkback, back-to-front, so the latest posts appear at the end, just the way nature intended. It also converts <br> and <p> and <hr> to HTML for display. And it changes the color and text size/kerning so it is more like it used to be. This is a very alpha-ish beta, but it works. Plus, User Scripts are easy to turn off. <br><br>Works with Firefox and Greasmonkey, or just works in Google Chrome. Give it a try! <hr> http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/92278
-
If it's only going to be font changes and shit, might as well don't change anything at all.

"Also, the subject line is too large. Having the date on the same line as the handle looked so much better. "<br><br> Fixed, if you're using Chrome or Firefox with Greasemonkey. I couldn't stand it either.<br><br> http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/92278

OMG...it's like the Obama Administration of Talkback "improvements"...you didn't think things could get worse, but they did...<p> Wait a sec...<p> Oh yeah...it's worse.
-
Starting at the bottom and scrolling up is like learning how to read right to left. I don't think I've ever seen this crappo setup on any messageboard. I guess this will make AICN more special... that is to say, we should all start wearing helmets and carrying drool cups.
-
LOL...OMG...WTF... It's like going from MS-DOS to Windows v1.0. It takes a while for it to sink in how bad it is...
-
I love that you've been preoccupied with me so much that you've come up with theories about how I must read every talkback, every post, and that I'm pretending to return? Are you daft? When's the last time I posted? 3 months ago, yeah? Then this IS a return, buddy. But the best part is that you think I've been using multiple nicknames. Dude, if you knew me at all, you wouldn't even consider it. Do you have any proof? Any theories as to who I've been playing as? If you know me, you know I like keeping the same name I've used since I started coming here. I don't play games. I've got no use for other names. But, if it pleases you that much, please continue to think of me in your other fantasies as well.
-
It's like you wrecked your site for the sake of that ubiquitous "Bookmark & Share" button...

-
New: converts upper case <BR> and <P> into proper paragraphs. Fixes the posts of jerks who type in crazy long text in title or message. And it still reorders the talkbacks and makes them look the good old fashioned way.<br><br>That being said, next I'm going to put the Quick Talkback form back at the bottom (where it belongs) and I'm also going to work on adding an ignore button (that may take a little more time) so certain talkbackers can just be removed from your view altogether. ;) <br><br>I'll entertain any feature requests, but it has to be something that can be done with post-processing. I can't restore the capital letters to the TalkBack names, for example, cuz that info just isn't there in the page.
-
EDIT buttons... are not needed. If Harry is never going to edit his own writings, then we should not be able to edit ours either.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA oh my god,the site now is even worse than it used to be.HAHA well done mr Harry, well done.Dont be surprised if your traffic decreases after this "improvement".

Via my AICN Extra Stuff Mod. Want to make sure I still post, just the same, and nothing got screwed up. If working, I will go ahead and update it at userscripts for anyone who wants to use it to get a somewhat more traditional AICN look going on.

With the Talkback Form, as is both natural and proper. If you too would like to have AICN looking a little more like it used to (but still better) feel free to download my AICN Extra Stuff mod. And see if it doesn't make life a little better. <br><br> http://userscripts.org/scripts/review/92278

Funny guy.
-
Has the clown(s) behind this "redesign" ever hear of a test server? You know, to test out the new layout and iron out any bugs? You don't put up a hurried and half-assed new design to the public and conduct your testing. That's web development 101...

So, this is what the Internet looked like in 1996, huh?
by Mr. Pricklepants
Oh, well! I guess it's time to go back to the future!
-
This very well could be the end of AICN!
-
Dead Talkbackers, I mean.
-
I don't know if you've ever tried scrolling down a long ass talkback via a PS3 browser to get to the latest post, but it's not exactly fun. Also trying to quickly click on a tb post to get to the actual talkbacks in stories that contain a fuck ton of Amazon linkage as each pic loads and continuously pushes it down the page is no more, or at least no longer as problematic as it once was. The Subject line though, like I said, needs tinkering. TIMESTAMPS NEED TO RETURN. I can't stress that enough.
-
...and if kev can do it, they should be able to...is offer an option to switch the tb post order in our user settings.
-
guess it's time to kick the tires on this here new fangled deal
-
this is it. I can get my nerd news from a hundred other sites two weeks earlier anyway, and I sure as hell don't need to read anymore of Harry's dumbass reviews. Peace!
-
check check paragraph check.
-
Why did you not do the testing of the new site off-line? You could have kept the old site running along side the new one until the new site was ready to go live. What a fuck up from a bunch of fucktards.
-
Yes there is. If you guide your cursor over the header of your comment, the options 'Edit' and 'Delete' appear to the right of your user name.

Harry knowles knows nothing about web developement. He created this site by using frontpage for dummies. He brought in a tech guy for a very limited time and we never heard from him again. with the net has allowed anyone to become a film critic. Harry likes movies, no harry loves movies. yet he has no enclyopedic knowledge about them. his reviews are refrence free. I have spoken before about philip french, the great film critic from the observer. before doing that he was the literary editor of the observer. He has to twin loves literature and cinema. He and harry knowles are very different people. Harry reviews Harry potter films by saying that he has never read the books. I have read all 7. and have seen all 6 movies. Books and movies are different. a film review is a personal thing. you either like a film or one doesnt. but as been stated here many times, you leave a harry review not knowing whether he likes a film a not. But these days, you can see a one line harry review when you go to the cinema, cause they are there above the poser! apologise for the length of this post......

If you don't have Greasemonkey for Firefox installed already, you can't use the Mod. So, if you're using Firefox, go install Greasemonkey, and then go install the AICN Extra Stuff Mod. With Google Chrome, all you should have to do is install.<br><br>It doesn't work with Internet Explorer or Safari. <br><br> https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748/ Then the script: <br><br> http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/92278 <br><br>If it's still not working for you, maybe it's a bug? Is it installed but just not doing anything?
-
It is beta, after all. I'll try and get it fixed in a couple of hours. Then . . . then you'll see!

incredibly unprofessional, there are 12 year old kids doing school projects more professionally than this In fact if this was a school project the kid would be getting a "you tried hard" sticker

I love this place.
-
Is working, but it seems to gag on these huge talk backs for a minute. Will throw up an "unresponsive script" dialog, but it will complete. Will see if I can fix it, but the slow, bloated pages with hundreds upon hundreds of talkback posts may be too much.
-
You're right - Harry loves movies. But he doesn't have any interest in FILM. There's a difference. But honestly the name of the site - "Ain't It Cool" - should be disclosure enough of this fact.

Two of the most pathetic TB'ers are still at their trolling little bitch best......little Billy Faulkner and man ass loving Kobe.....yea I crossed the line. Oh billy, make sure you respond by telling me what a cry baby I am when in actuality this site is basically a joke, just like you have always been....On a different subject, this new TB format is really total shit, it's no way an improvement.
-
I never claimed to have "left" the site. I don't know how or why you would assume getting banned from the talkbacks means one would never, ever come back to read the website. But that's a foolish proposition. Besides, once I saw that the site was going to go through some "changes", I wanted to see what they entailed. I saw the talkbacks were fucked up and thought I'd experiment and see if I could get in and voila, here I am. There's nothing magical about it. I know you'd love to believe I've been trying to log in every day for the past 3 months, that I've been reading every single post, but dude, its just not true. Not sure why you'd like to think that anyway; I have no clue why you have this agenda against me. I've never talked to you before today.
-
I'm afraid it wont be coming out here this weekend.
-
Not the best idea to try to emulate the style of the old site. It's dated and hard on the eyes anyway. Would have been easier to start from scratch. I'm a fan of Drupal. I'm not a fan of out of the box Drupal sites. But the formatting inherent in out of the box Drupal sites is much easier on the eyes than what you guys got going on right now. Hope it works out. Good for you supporting Drupal.

by The_Floating_Skull_of_Robert_Loggia
If you're using Drupal for this site, you're going to need the premium package. The talkback will become a spammer/hacker paradise without it! Hell, my site probably gets 1/100th of AICN's traffic and Mollum catches around 1000 attempted exploits, hacks, and spammers a month.

After 14 years, there's an EDIT/DELETE button at last
by Mr. Pricklepants
Sure took a long time. I suspect that in 2025 this website will look like how a modern website looked like in 2010.
-
I've always loved AICN and it's bizarre adherence to a 15 year old format . . . but this utter mess of an upgrade impresses even me as being . . . amazing. It's like what happens when I update the code for my personal website that very few people ever go to and doesn't and never has made a single cent of money . . . And the oversights bewilder. The ugly, hard to read font sizes and formats, the lack of any way (in this day an age) for users to format anything . . . wow! Add to that, it's slower and more lethargic than the old site and adds nothing significantly modern, and whatever infrastructure they are using can't put articles in the right place (how is that even possible?) or display all the talkback posts . . . yeesh!<br><br>BTW, my AICN Extra Stuff mod is working, but it starts to drag on huge pages like this (because it may surprise you to learn that AICNs talkback code is kinda bloated) and on older machine will warn you that a script is making the browser unresponsive. <br><br>At some point, I'm going to add some preferences that will allow you to have the script only process the latest 100 talkbacks, to avoid the extra added slowness of a script post-processing the already slow and bloated AICN news page.

killikikilli: Talk to Maltheus. I Could Try and Edit It, But . . .
by kevinwillis.net
I want to take another approach. But I'll add similar prefs as I add features (in a strip at the bottom of the page). But I also want my script to work with Chrome, as well as Greasemonkey and Firefox (AICN PowerMod Only works with Greasemonkey).<br><br>There will be some updates today. Soon.
-
*sniff*
-
"...and if kev can do it, they should be able to...is offer an option to switch the tb post order in our user settings. "<br><br>Because it would run a lot more efficiently. Post processing is a very elaborate, resource-consuming way to do it, although I think they kind of want to force a format on people. But user preferences and theming would make a lot of sense for a heavily talkback driven site like this.
-
Rest in badly-formatted, buggy, retrograde, laughable, self-sabotaged pieces. A sad day.
-
Pure crap. All you've managed to do from my end is change fonts (in the case of Quint's BTS PotD, one that's too big and in bold making it look amateurish) and slow things down to a crawl. So far, whatever you're trying to do isn't worth the effort. This sucks ass. So much so that I'm tempted to get my info elsewhere. Perhaps if your "web designer" would do what PROFESSIONALS do and try out the new version of the site, testing for bugs, etc on a private server or sub-domain before subjecting us to this horror, there wouldn't be such rebellion. Oh, and a word of advice? How about all the writers for AICN try using SPELL CHECKER so they can at least sound professional.
-
Classing up the joint, old friend. Good to see you back. How have you been?
-
Did you add an edit function?
-
This site became a John Carpenter wasteland overnight.
-
Somebody had fun..Welcome back D.Vader!!
-
...and all we get is an apology for screwing up with the cache servers? Well, that's more than we got in the years before.
-
I've tried it about 50 times so far and nothing.
-
There is an intermittent lag and synchronization problem with the servers because we fucked up. It is less evident now although not really. It may be worse during daytime traffic but probably just as bad whenever you try to log on. symptoms would be articles listing on the homepage disappearing, then reappearing, and delayed talkback posts. In other words we fucked the whole site up but please don't leave because if you did we'd get no moneys :-(
-
Where's the talkback posts?

by FlickaPoo
...every time you refresh. <P> (I insist on honoring the name of <P>, even in these dark times) Every post is like a message in a bottle...a delicate message of love, hate, or indifference...dropped fearfully or cast carelessly into these uncertain New Talkback seas...
-
And I'll never believe that anyone got the last post in on the old site other than me. Damn, I totally messed up this grammar, but it's because I've been drinking and the goddamn site isn't saving talkbacks accurately. So that means this will probably be obsolete when I wake up. So if I could paragraph, I would say "Flickapoo, it's all good if you were truly the last one, since I remember your screen name, probably because I've respected it at some point if not others."
-
Again and again the same situation... For so many years... Tethered to a (fukked-up Talkback)... In a room full ot mirrors... A pretty girl in your bathroom... Checking out her sex appeal... And the Lord on death row... While the millions of his lost and lonely ones... Call out and clamour to be found... Caught in their struggle (to be first or last or whatever)... And their search for (posts) that stick around

Making it actually WORSE than before makes me wonder if Harry just wandered outside with a 20 and asked the nearest guy "Hey, you good with computers?"

I notice he has a black box but I don't recognize the name?...

Now that "No Subject" appears when you leave the subject bar blank, he won't be able to do any more of his infamous blank subject posts!

I can't believe how wrong this has gone. I almost feel sorry for Harry in a way. This is perhaps the most unprofessional behaviour I've ever seen when it comes to 'upgrading' a website.

New Website Design By Uwe Boll And Stevie Wonder
by CHRISTIAN_BALE_TRASHED_MY_LIGHTS

The upgrades are pretty damn miserable. 1 out 7 times I try to go to the site works. All the other times it just goes to a blank white screen and says "done" at that bottom of Firefox. And when it does load, so many graphics are missing and when you click a link it's super slow in responding. And the format (spacing between items) reminds me of being in first grade again, it's SOOOO large! Every time a site upgrades, it sucks. Unless things get fixed soon, I'm finding a new entertainment site. Sorry.

Actually this is like something from FRINGE
by CHRISTIAN_BALE_TRASHED_MY_LIGHTS
One minute you have one talkback and, if you hit Refresh, you have one from an alternate universe.
-
With all that talk about edit buttons, I thought you guys were just joking around and debating on the subject of including one, I didn't realize they actually exist. I'm actually surprised to see them.
-
I have no idea if this is anywhere near the final look, but I'll join the chorus of jeers if it is. However... I FINALLY might get some actual work done more often, so thanks for that! All this time, whodathunk it'd be something as simple as layout and font that'd turn me away for good. I've always said the talkbacks are the main draw of the site, and it was a huge mistake to fuck with them without testing and asking the people who actually use them what they think. Maybe I'm wrong... anyway, for me, I don't think I'd stop coming here altogether, but I'll definitely be on the lookout for a real alternative now.
-
To my AICN mod. Going to add "hilite" and "ignore". Should also be able to get the edit and delete buttons working on Chrome (if you're running the mod). Alas, nothing I can do about how tragically and crazily slow the site is moving, or the weird randomness of the talkbacks. But I can clean up some of the formatting back to the classics. I'm also going to add a feature that will change moderator black boxes to bright pink so they don't seem so bad-ass anymore.
-
And in more ways that one. The code is crazy fat. It looks like there's bits of edit code and what not that don't apply to every talkback, but basically duplicate every talkback post for a potential edit window, making these talkbacks twice as large for the same amount of comments as the old one. Makes no sense. But there they are. But, I've seen worse. Still, the way it's structures, a 1000 talkback discussion becomes frickin' gigantic. I'm not sure moving away from the "titles only" display was such a great idea. Even when the talkback that is titles on is displayed, all the text, comments, etc, are all still in there. Again, since my Mod is a post-processor, there's nothing I can do about the huge bloat of overweight data the site produces. But I'll try to make it prettier. And who knows, maybe you'll see this post . . . in an hour or three.

I mean how hard is it to hire a good webdesigner? It's not like the site is complex!

...I was going to say I didn't like the new layout, but once I found the expand all button I think I changed my mind. ... still not 100% on that. It's been the same, or close to the same, for so long that it takes a bit of getting used to. But the comment field is starting to look cleaner to me already. Kudos.

The site is an EPIC FAIL of Harryesque proportions. Here's why...
by Cervantes
Apart from the fact that this whole farce should have been done properly offline seperately in the first place, the one remaining strongpoint of this site has now been totally ruined - namely, the 'talkbacks'. The whole thing has been REVERSED now so that everyone's responses/answers now come BEFORE the comments that they were responding/answering to! Who's the ad wizard that thought it would be a good idea to make us have to scroll all the way down to start things off first? And on top of that, it looks like we're going to have to click on EACH and EVERY comment title to see what people have posted! WTF? Life's just too short for this additional, time-consuming hassle. And worst of all, it seems that there's now going to be a 'delete' function too, which will make a mockery of the whole thing, and give an easy 'get out of jail' card to anyone who's been an complete asshole... I don't know if these are your own ideas Harry, or those of the dufus that's muddling their way through this whole mess, but they've spoiled things big time. It's just a little thing compared to these other problems, but it would be nice to have 'clickable' links, as it's still a pain trying to work out if someone has typed a capital i or a lower-case l, since they both look the same in this font! Personally, I just go to the likes of the Darkhorizons site for decent regular movie news updates, and Trekmovie for their excellent weekly 'roundup' (who thankfully KEPT their style of 'talkback')...and just check in here for everyone's talkback comments on the stuff you eventually catch up with! Gotta love ya Harry, but seriously...I wonder how many here had the same feeling as me that this was gonna end up going tits up once again? Too bad.
-
Dec. 10, 2010, 2:41 a.m. CST
Okay, I've just noticed the 'expand all' funtion on the 'READERS TALKBACK' header...but...
by Cervantes
...only because it was mentioned. Thank goodness for this option at least, but can I suggest the 'expand all' wording gets moved to beside the 'READERS TALKBACK' wording, so that it's far more obvious to see.
-
....this was an emergency migration. get over it.
-
I'm fine with getting used to a new site layout. It happens, we'll deal. But I will not sit around waiting for each click to take affect. This isn't 1998 AICN powers that be. If you moved to a new server, keep moving. This mess is WAY too slow.
-
Without wanting to reveal too many secrets I can tell you the Dojo operates from a fiber optic equipped super computer powered by unrefined hot magma from beneath the Earth's crust. Yet whenever I visit this new improved aicn website it RUNS LIKE A COMMODORE FUCKING 64! In the words of Mr McEnroe, you cannot be serious.
-
christian_bale_trashed_my_lights, I will simply have to take 'no subject' to mean my status in life. The Dojo remains unruleable (is that a word, it is now).
-
D.Vader, good to see you back - even if it is just a technical fuck up rather than the good grace of our chubby host. It might just be a hello goodbye tho, this site is such a chore at the mo that I might take a sojourn until the work experience kid who's handling the coding gets his act together...
-
Or is it just another glitch? Damn you, whoever forced AICN to update this way. :(
-
about the feedback Harry. Final Crisis has been adapted into AICN form, and thats the soundtrack baby
-
you are not, Sir.
-
Yeah, the 'Edit' option has gone for some reason. We can delete our comments, but are unable to edit them? Who came up with that bright idea?
-
...is so awesome you have to click it twice before it expands all. The first click results in nothing, not even a frustrating "Are you sure you want to expand all?" message (although I wouldn't have been surprised if it did, to be honest).
-
Seeing as they're the most important part, right?
-
Shit.
-
Well?
-
What do YOU think of the "new, improved site," you sexy beast?

Please add in some code to automatically expand the talkback if the browser has their javascript disabled. I'm not enabling javascript for this site.

Dec 10, 2010 6:30:41 UTC... Site Update... by headgeek... Is nowhere near complete. The Ruby On Rails version of AICN was at least a month and a half off from being where we wanted it to be, to debut it. However, due to some problems that developed with our Drupal version - we had to aggressively move forward with the new version and do live development, which I and every other web person loathes. But it was that, or shut AICN down for a month & a half.

So, let's all quit our bitchin' (at least about the site problems) and agree to meet back here after the first of the year. It was funny for a day or two. Now, we all just sound mean, like Sarah Palin when her staffer brings her the wrong shade of lipstick.
-
It is unreadable and hard on the eyes. Whoever made that decision ought to rethink it. BOLD face for headlines, regular for everything else. That said, the font is way too small everywhere on the site.

Market it when it comes back up. This is excruciating, and I'm about to give up, d.vader or no d.vader.

by therightclique
You do realize you forgot to say what the point of all of this is, right? Why is any of this happening? If you were good at communicating, you would have started with something like "As you know, we're migrating our site to another server or "..... "You may be aware that we have been receiving DDOS attacks" or "Just so you know, we're changing the site for the following reasons:". But instead, you decided to make a post that falls somewhere in the middle of the story, leaving people confusing and alienated. Bravo! You run a site visited by dozens of people. Please have the courage to make your posts complete and all encompassing. Some users don't spend every waking moment on this site. Get your head out of your own asses for just a minute, please.

I urge all of you to install Kevin Willis' Extra Stuff Script

It makes the new TB tolerable (and makes HTML tags work for formatting purposes).

is not even the word i would use to describe how bad this site is. I think i will be back next year, when things are worked out. It takes 10 mins to do anything at all on this site.
-
I'm sure Herc is pissing his pants with the desperation at not being able to post two or three articles this week consisting of nothing but Amazon referrer links.
-
This has to be the most amateurish stunt ever pulled on this site. What happened, did you offend wikileaks? A simple explanation of what the fuck is going on might help you out guys. As it is , the garbled nonsense from a panic stricken moron doesn't cut. Whats happening, when will it all be fixed...its not hard to COMMUNICATE. Fucking Incredible
-
Seriously, you want articulated communication from Harold? Have you ever read one of his "reviews"?
-
and extremely well versed at all things computers. Way to completely obliterate those stereotypes, Harry. It's looking more and more likely that your success was a fluke as opposed to your possessing any real knowledge or talents to speak of.
-
So to read all comments, we have to click on each one individually? I hope that's an error and not someone's concept of a good idea...
-
Haha...love it! The fact that "First Users" can't post anymore is well worth the site update. Lame fonts, lag, whatever, well worth putting first users out to pasture.
-
Because it is literally uglier then a baboon's ass.
-
Should be featured on Failblog.
-
AICN is changing things up a bit, eh? Interesting. Interesting. Gonna take some getting used to, but we're trying new things, and that's the important part.
-
The reply box on the top really makes no sense. You have read a post and if you want to respond you have to scroll back up to the top? Geez. C'mon Harry. Get a decent web developer for once.
-
and believe me they know how to suck change the order back to allow us to scroll down
-
Beaks is drooling at the thought, he just reads "rape" and nothing else, but calm down beaks this is more like those GL raped my childhood comments
-
Jesus Christ Harry, listen to your fucking base! The reverse talkback DOES NOT work!! Can you honestly sit there and say it was a good change? Was it a change people were honestly clamoring for? Do you talk in reverse in real life? Listen to the people Harry. You know, the people who make your success possible here at AICN. Think about that long and hard.
-
Yes, clusterfuck. Slow. Agonizingly slow. Maddeningly impatient. Short fuse temper tantrum at slow-loading board. <p> I tried different computers, latest hardware. Even at Apple Store, this AICN site downloads slllllooooooowwww, especially with long-ass talkback board within the story. And have to click on every comment to read instead of scrolling to read open thread comments. Fantastic.<p>1998 AICN web design is good enough, and 2010 re-design is taking it back to the slow & shitty 80's.
-
...and I don't actually care. I just want the site to go fast again. : ( Maybe Harry could post a response in this thread so we don't need to torture ourselves trying to view the others.

Why did you let the Situation redesign your site, Harry? WHY?
by MrMysteryGuest
-
I think you're doing a bang-up job on the re-design. I think it will be just SMASHING when it is all said and done, kinks worked out and polished like a witch's knob.
-
What can we bitch about tomorrow?<P>?
-
If you cave on every single thing we bitch about, we're just gonna think you pay attention to us! it reinforces bad behavior!...I actually WANTED the delete button, and the bitching about the order of the posts was just silly, "I don't like change" my-pussy-hurts-isms. Swear to Jebus, some of them will be complaining when they have to scroll through hundreds of posts, no matter which direction they're scrolling...All whining aside, the last couple of days have added up to a fairly entertaining reminder that AICN is still just a geek in a basement. (I mean that as a compliment, for once.)

Hopefully a shorter subject line is in the works.

I FUCKING LOVE YOU GUYS!!!
-
...it keeps the post you just wrote in the form and you gotta manually delete. It'd be nice if there was a "clear" option off in the corner if possible.
-
Y'all added a reply option too??? Wow.
-
But it does reload the page and clear the form out. I just wonder if you reply to an older talkback post, if that will move your response under it? Lemme check...

DO SOMETHING about this "Reply To Talkback"
by CHRISTIAN_BALE_TRASHED_MY_LIGHTS
Change the font, change the color, move it to the right. Do SOMETHING. At the moment it's fucking annoying to have it there under the main body of the message in exactly the same font and color. It looks like it's part of the post. Also: can we get paragraphs now?<p>I'm thinking probably not. If not then you better sort that out too. There's no way I'm reading through a million words in some of these fuckers' posts without spacing.
-
....and we're going to change the reply-to-talkback. maybe both font and color.
-
Good to hear that the unwashed masses of the AICN talkbacks are being heard.
-
Not sure about reply-to-talkback though. <P> And please reactivate paragraph spacing.<P> Thanks.
-
and it's just not the same. Oh sure I will go there for actual STORIES from now on, which they seem to come fast and furious over there... it's fucking awesome if you're jonesing for actual information. But I'm not even sure yet about their reviews, I bet they suck a lot more than the AICN ones... even Harry's are at least somewhat entertaining, if unreadable. For a quick comparison, read their set report of COWBOYS AND ALIENS and then read the one over here. Hands down, their's is so boring as to be almost unreadable and Quint's makes you feel like you're actually there experiencing it all right alongside him. The only parts of their story that I enjoyed was anything regarding the use of practical effects and the bit with Sam Rockwell saying his character is a bit like what he played in Galaxy Quest. And the comments section... fucking forget it. FORGET IT. Everyone writes barely a sentence, although I do like the threading, it seems to be for naught since most people hardly post anything worth reading anyway. Do they delete long rants or something? If you go off the rails as people do regularly in here, is it just removed? I knew the TB's were more fun and entertaining, I just didn't realize to what degree they are indeed the best game in town. My last complaint is I HATE having to go through pages of comments. Keep it on one fucking page... you guys really did capture lightning in a bottle with the talkbacks.
-
...when Tim Kring and company made needless changes to the direction of the storyline and completely train-wrecked the entire series. Every time they tried to repair the damage, they only made it worse. I think the most aggravating thing about "the situation" - aside from the fact that at present it takes about five times longer to navigate through the site - is that there has been no real formal explanation about why any of this is occurring (unless possibly I missed it). Except for the odd, brief techno-babble from mysterious sources, there's been little to no communication to readers about what's been happening to AICN. It just seems disrespectful to the readers not to keep them informed.

"you guys really did capture lightning in a bottle with...
by FlickaPoo
...the talkbacks".<P> A few people complained a lot, but I've always said the old AICN talkback was perfect. There was a reason it was the best game in town. I suspect most of the simple efficacy of the setup was accidental, but it ended up making the site what it is...or was.<P> I recommend mimicking the original design as closely as possible. The things that make one interface feel more natural and effortless than another are very subtle. Add a few features if you have to, but it was obviously working...why mess with that?

come on guys,do you expect that they are going to listen to the talkbackers and fix this problematic layout?.My impression so far is that the changes that they did aim mostly to eliminate the unnecessary net load of their server in order to cut down the costs, rather than the convenience of the talkbackers with their posting/reading of the site.

You've read one of Harry's reviews, right? As COBRA-KAI might say "Spellchecker does not exist in this dojo".

-
When I log on to AICN, I usually open separate tabs on the stories I'm interested in and now all the tab headers just say the same thing, Ain't It Cool News: The Best in... All the Tabs should be individually titled so I know which ones to go to in the order of my interest. A minor complaint, but.. I'm anal. FIX IT!! Lol!

Yeah, where is everybody. There was nothing wrong with the old site, as you said. Sure, a bigger comments field to type in, and auto-paragraphing was all that was needed, but nobody was complaining. I hope more fixes are in the pipeline because this is not working out.

Used to be able to stay logged in forever if you visited the site regularly, now you have to log in all the time. Otherwise, things are shaping up very nicely. Thanks for keeping us informed on your progress and plans.

BSB: Yes, You Have To Refresh. Yes, They Call it an Upgrade.
by kevinwillis.net
My version (AICN Extra Stuff) is better: <br><br> http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/92278 <br><br>Adds ignore and hilite for users, restores much of the old formatting, adds a count for number of posts. Makes the "Reply to" button more distinct. But the ignore and hilite are really handy. For instance, you are hilited for me, BSB, so I always know to pay attention to your posts. Ignore and hilite are handy, but so is the linkify--all http links are turned into real, clickable links. Fairly groovy. And I'll try to keep it updated as they constantly change their formatting. Just a suggestion. Could also potentially add to the confusion. But what's life without a little challenge? I know, I use it all the time. ;)
-
I don't even
-
I tried using your upgrade but I kept getting the message about a script slowing down the website, and had to disable it. Any ideas what I did wrong? Not that it really matters, I guess. With the lack of articles here (seriously - does everything stop during BNAT?????), the lack of talkbackers and the carcrash of an upgrade occuring, I might not be coming back here that often anyway.
-
Or even just a backup. I mean I guess whoever scragged this place doesn't have a path back. Because there's got to be a whole lot of people associated with the site who are throwing quite understandable fits at losing their audience and livelihood. See, what professional developers do is, we start with a prototype. We don't just start hacking on a production site and hope it will work out. We make a little new site and we start adding the new features to it. And we do that one feature at a time, making certain each new feature is bedded in before we try to create another one. We do that by writing tests - automated tests - and we run all the tests all the time in a thing called a continuous integration server. That way we know if an old feature gets broken by a new feature. And when we migrate an old database to a new front end, we write code that does that migration. And we do that test-first as well. So that way we never lose anything. And we version control everything so that if one of us screws something up, we can always roll back to a known state. Google "git" for a good way to do that. Oh, and we keep the source-code open so that everyone else who likes us can get stuck in to help us out. Google "github" for an example of a bunch of professional devs who work this way. But whoever is responsible for what has happened to this place can't have done any of that. Which makes him or her a dipshit. And whether this dipshit is in fact Harry Knowles, or is just employed by Harry Knowles, at the end of the day the whole giant diphshittiness of the exercise still comes back to Harry Knowles' decision to not employ professionals to do this kind of work. Which is to say, yep, you suck.
-
WHAT THE FUCK?
-
"NOT the BEES! NOT THE BEES!!!!" "HOW'D THE CODE GET BROKE? HOW'D IT GET BROKE???!!" "WHY ... IS .... THERE ... SO ... MUCH WHITE SPACE???!" (side-kicks Harry against the wall ...) "WHY ... DO I HAVE TO ... LOG IN ... EVERY STINKIN' TIME??!" (sucker-punches Harry while dressed in a bear suit)
-
Heh, just kidding. Had ya goin' there though didn't I?
-
Didn't he bash out the original version 1.0 of the site, way back when? Maybe he thought it was fitting, for him to do the same years later. It's the only way to explain such terrible terrible work. Who ever did THIS version of the site, hasn't coded properly in at least 10 years.
-
You did nothing wrong. The code for AICN is now very large, and my script, to reformat everything and ignore people and hilite them and replace <BR> and what not . . . well, it goes over everything painstakingly. Which means on my G5 at home, I get the same "script is slowing down" message on this Talkback (but not all of them). If you continue it once or twice, it will reformat, but that is a pain in the butt. But as long as the code generated by the site is crazy fat (indeed, last time I checked, it was including the code (and the text of the talkback) for the edit function for every comment, not just the person logged in, making each Talkback (code wise) twice as large as it should be. If you have a speedy computer (like a solid Macbook from last year that I've tested on) then you shouldn't get the message. Also, there is a preference (preferences are at the bottom of the page) to limit the Talkback to the most recent 100 posts. Which needs to be fixed (I did it originally when it was posting everything in reverse). But I'm going to go back and hit that, and see if that can stop the message. I'm also going to add a preference to "not run on large talkbacks". So it will run the basics, but not the painstaking message-by-message process. <br><br>Last run on my G5, I got the message twice. Limiting the run to 100 messages stops it . . . unfortunately, right now, it's actually the 1st 100 messages, which kind of defeats the point. But I will fix that, and also add the "don't run on large talkbacks" option, which will avoid that script message.<br><br> Problem is, the code is too dang large. This page, for example, is almost 2 mbs in size (just the text). That's a large text file, and even larger if you have multiple looping processes running over it. And it could be at least half that size.

AICN Extra Stuff Updated Once More. Ignore Spammers! Hilite Favorites!
by kevinwillis.net
Now, limiting Talkbacks to last 100 Posts works in correct order. This can help with older or slower machines, or any place my AICN Extra Stuff script makes the browser throw up "script in slowing down site" errors. Also, in that vein, I added a "skip huge talkbacks" option. In that case, the script just won't run on talkbacks with more than 600 posts. Only necessary for people who run into that particular problem in normal usage. <br><br> Also added the "turn moderator comments pink" option. Very important. Most importantly to this version, I added an "Auto Expand All" option, so that when you load a Talkback, all the messages will display automatically, instead of having to click on them one by one. If you want them to. <br><br>The old stuff is still true. breaks and paragraphs are converted, hilite or ignore certain talkbackers, hilite all your posts, the format is more like classic AICN . . . etc. Anyone who uses it (and there are apparently about 40?) let me know if you like it, and let me know if you run into any problems. Works with Google Chrome and Firefox + Greasemonkey. <hr> Horizontal rules are also supposed to work, btw. <br><br> http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/92278
-
Thanks bud, I'm eager to give your script a try. Sounds like you put a lot of effort into it! Harry should hire your ass.
-
Can you be any more of a loser if you tried? Your little "insults" are nothing of the kind, you truly amuse me, you are one of the most entertaining children I have ever come across. Just be careful, don't let mommy catch you being naughty on the 'puter.
-
Whatever our private/political/philosophical dispositions, we can all agree that this site "migration" has been an unmitigated disaster for AICN.

How are you, my brethren? Kevin, you rule.

Wow. It looks like we're getting content again. Amazing. I'm glad that there are new articles to read but, guys, you really should have had someone here updating the site whilst you were all at BNAT. It's crazy that an entire website stopped for two days so the staff could enjoy free movies.

With the AICN Extra Stuff Mod, and they'll go away. Eventually. As far as being hired by AICN, I'll freelance. Give me access and a paycheck! Does look like they are trying to load balance, or have different servers serving up the same content . . . I dunno about all that. I just know how I want the damn page to look.<br><br>Also, I know they wouldn't have to be so worried about traffic levels if they didn't have so many outside websites that each page had to wait on for ad serving and site metrics and summer-fresh douching and about 50 other slow-ass sites the current stuff is calling out to. What I can do is recommend--and this free--that they not have invisible edit code that duplicates the content of every comment, for every comment, for the edit feature that doesn't even work. And, if they ever get it working, just have that content for the person who is logged in--not every frickin post in the Talkback! . . . <br><br>In all fairness, I'm sure there's a good reason for that. Anyhoo, I got a lot of PHP experience, but haven't messed with Ruby on Rails yet. But I'm open to anything, if there's a paycheck attached. ;)
-
And started listing posts Last-to-first? I wish they'd make up their mind. That breaks my "show last 100 posts" thing, which I just fixed to work with posts being sorted the right way . . . argh! I'm gonna have to add a checkbox that says "Is AICN sorting Last-to-First?" So it knows which way they decided to do it today. Ugh! For the time being, I may make it pick the last 100 posts based on whether or not you're sorting in reverse order. Jeeze louise.

This Is a Cross-Post, But I Thought Orcus and Others Might Appreciate It
by kevinwillis.net
And that's this: I added a "Clean Up Article" preference box, at the bottom of the screen. So, in addition to all the other stuff (ignore, hilite, auto-expand, etc) it also cleans up the article so there not such much goddammed whitespace. <br><br> It's a preference item. As is the "count" preference, which puts a count of how many posts a particular talkbacker has contributed to a particular Talkback, right by their name. But you don't have to use that. It's just there if you want too. <br><br> Of course, you have to go update to get the "Clean up article". Not perfect, but they look better. http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/92278

Hello My name is Scott and I am a flash designer and animator and also a very long time follower of your talkback movie news site. Well I noticed last week that you’ve updated your site and since your updating I thought of something I would like to do totally free for you, if you are interested. I would like to create a flash animated header for your page, and this is an idea that I have which would incorporate the weekly gif animations you have running at the top of your current page (though I would be happy to create an idea that you have). The top of the page (so above where it says HOME COOL NEWS COAXIAL etc) would all look like a cinema room, so you would see a row of cinema chairs with people sat in them and obviously a big cinema screen at the front. When the flash animation begins the curtain would be down on the cinema screen, and on the curtains would have the AINT IT COOL NEWS logo on it. Then Harry would appear as an Usher (the cartoon design would be based on the image you use weekly for your own animations) and a projector would appear, which would be switched on. The cinema curtain goes up, and we then see a count down and then you would see your weekly animation play on the big screen. While this is happening Harry would be reading a comic, which he would open, and you would see is called AINT IT COOL NEWS. So it would be a cool animation that ties in with the theme of your site, it would look impressive on your page, but not be too loud or in your face either. This is what I do for a living, I've emailed you my contact details if you are interested . I hope you like the sound of my idea, I think it would fit nicely for your site, but if you think you have a better idea, and would like me to do this, let me know. Cartoonscott

the talkbacks are notably puny. no one cares anymore. talkbackers- the backbone of the site- have probably moved on to other sites that aren't based on 1988 code. the internet has moved on, people's attention spans are even shorter. they aren't going to have patience to wait for AICN to fix what must have been the most basic of codes to begin with. if you guys can't handle this site, how will you ever adapt? i'm hoping you'll launch with some slick, new effective format, but i doubt it. i've been checking back, and what is up to read isn't even comfortable to look at, so i pass by. it took me some trouble to even log in again and post this. it'll probably be my last until the 'reveal' (fingers crossed) of the new site. this is just poor form, fellas. it's embarrassing. i hope the site lives through it.

I know someone must be watching. They deleted a few of my posts, and at least one of lostboys that I've noticed. My posts were just saying 'fuck this shit'. They asked us to say what we thought originally.. and so I did. Was going to delete them myself if that function had stayed around and if this revamp had ended up being successful. I'm thinking they really don't want us to attempt to play with the formatting at all. Why not?

It's like he never existed. You are a prince among men, sir.

I'll try to keep it updated as they break it with format changes. Tweaking my cleaning up of articles as we speak. Then I think that's about it. I don't know how to catch posts so that I could auto-add < br > or < p > or whatever from returns in the post. Although this is an insanely easy thing to do on the backend (hey, AICN It guys: commentText.replace('\n','< BR >') or $commentText = str_replace('\n','< BR >',$commentText) covers the most common structures. Copy and paste. It's free! Just take out the spaces) I can't imagine why it's not been done.<br><br>Sticky, your posts may have disappeared because of technical glitches, which they are clearly having plenty of. Or you may have been randomly chosen for testing back-end editing tools, which are also probably new and not ready for prime time, we just don't know because we don't see them.

Good work, Spammongs

First time here since the changes. Not sure what the point was since they don't seem to add much of anything. Not being able to do paragraphs anymore would pretty much be a dealbreaker for me though. As for the AICN Power Mod, I'm too busy to work on it this month, but I might be able to revisit it in January. I probably won't even attempt to make any changes to it until things calm down here first. Usually, when a stale site changes after many years, it changes continually for a few months and it's not even worth trying to keep up with it. Especially when the web developer(s) is particularly atrocious at their job. It also doesn't help that the coax section of this site won't report on the shows people want TBs on (and after so many other shows have been canceled). I find myself posting here less and less each year just because the moderators are so out of touch with the talkbackers. I mean, really? No Dexter season finale talkback? I don't come here to chat about the latest DVD releases you know. It looks like kevinwillis.net has picked up the modding slack. I'll have to give that script a shot. But I can already see the hassles he's going through with shifting sands, so I may wait a bit there too.

BTW, There Was a Bug In Some of My AICN Extra Stuff Mods
by kevinwillis.net
That didn't save prefs and hilites and ignores in every situation. That should be fixed now. Always open to feature requests that I can actually do, BTW.<br><br> http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/92278

Check out my AICN Extra Stuff Mod. Coding wise, it's a mess, but it gets much of the job done. Cleans up stuff, adds hilite and ignore, auto-expanding comments, translates the hardcodeds breaks and paragraphs into the appropriate HTML (and does HRs, too, until they change something). Adds a running count to the comments. Anyhoo, I like it. Some other stuff. Check it out! And, yes, the constant changes to the site oft breaks it, so I have to fix it.
-
You should ask CHUD, Hitfix etc or some other neutral party to have a forum post which will alert people to when AICN is back up (of course they may just want to capitalize on the situation). The site is basically non-functional now. I’m pretty surprised based on the fact you should have plenty of nerd/geek web design expertise at your disposal - this would be like the "New Coke" of web redesigns if when they shipped the casn they forgot to provide an opening for people to use.
-
Well, except for the stories being in the wrong categories, it works all right for me. ;)
-
This is my fourth attempt at posting. 4th times the charm.
-
That worked.
-
I see how the talkback now works. it is space limited. all you can type is a line or two or three lines. the ability to comment has been limited. so no long winded posts. i guess.

What's everyone else's take? I've said it until I'm blue in the face, but I continually find it amazing that no other site has thought to copy the TB style of one page of continuous comments without too much separation... just add some kind of profile pages for TBers and you have facebook for film geeks. Maybe this is what AICN is doing now, but I think they also need to pay more attention to what people want, like in coax, it's almost an insolent resistance to the endless complaining of TB's missing for certain popular shows and TB's for shows nobody gives a shit about showing up like clockwork (I'm not one of them, but I can see where they're coming from). Is it really that difficult to code and host a discussion board that looks like this? Because this is the formula for a site's success on pretty much any subject... if you want to keep lively discussions going on your site, TB style is like Colonel Sanders 11 herbs and spices... or the formula for Coke.
