First pics, now video! THE BEAVER trailer has hit!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. We had the first official studio picture release from The Beaver up earlier today and now the trailer has hit iTunes. Looks sharp, I gotta say... I'm not surprised they're focusing on the lighthearted angle and ignoring the pitch dark fucked up comedy aspect... or maybe they toned that down from the script I read. Hope not, that's one of my favorite parts of this particular story. But Gibson looks to be in fine form here and if nothing else we can feel confident that Jodie Foster has created a beautiful looking movie. And I think it looks awesome.
-
looks very promising. i have to say i like the concept for this movie. i thought the design for the puppet itself was a bad choice, but actually it grew on me as i watched the trailer.
-
But by the time I saw the whole trailer, I was quite impressed. Seems incredibly heartfelt for a movie about a guy who only talks through a beaver puppet.
-
looked a whole lot better believe me!! Such a lovely girl!
-
You shouldn't deceive people with the "Academy Award Winner" tag if you didn't win it for the field the ad is promoting you in. Gibson doesn't have an acting Oscar, dangit. HE HASN'T EVEN BEEN NOMINATED FOR ACTING, for crap's sake.
-
is the first on the internet to feature Beaver.
-
this was a role for tom hanks<p>everyone knows that gibson is a nutjob...so not so hard to sell him as a nutjob<p>so foster took the ez way out<p>now give hanks the role...that would be a hard sell
-
Good to hear a tune from them show up in a trailer, terrific band. Also, this looks like a nice movie, I'd pay to see it.
-
But it's hard not like him even the tiniest bit from seeing this trailer. I hope the fucker turns his life around.
-
yeah right! "turner and hooch but hooch is on my hand"
-
I will always see his movies. Appocolypto is the fucking shit.
-
Is this made by Hallmark...? God the amount of sickly mush in that trailer it was on par with Kramer vs Kramer but more predictable and less believable!<p>I'm out!
-
... Mel Gibson is nuts and everybody hates him. But what if he found a Beaver puppet that made it all better? Smart.
-
...and i look forward to seeing this. His movies almost never disappoint.
-
and Mel has his hand sticking up his ass
-
...from now on. Much safer.
-
...that the beaver personality would be vulgar? I just assumed, without knowing much about the movie, that a puppet gimmick in an adult movie would be used for adult humor. That trailer makes it seem like the puppet is suppose to represent the kind of person he can become, but he needs to become that person without the puppet. Yeah, as Quint (or whoever wrote the article) said, either the trailer does a great job of hiding the movie's dark side, or they did away with the dark elements from the script. Seeing as the trailer shows more of the family members than Mel Gibson's character, it's too early to think we've figured out the finished product.
-
That shit never works for me.
-
First comment is basically all I'd say as well, lol
-
Some crafty editor takes this trailer footage and has Gibson talking in the movie, then cut to the beaver puppet and you hear the audio tape audio speaking...

In Chrome. I have to use Firefox, which has become so bloated it's almost as bad as the Internet Explorer it was supposed to replace (which, ironically, in its latest form, is a much sleeker browser than the lot of 'em!). <BR> Also, this looks "meh". Still like Gibson, though. I could care less if he's a racist. So was my grandfather. I liked him, too.

Men Who Hate Women, & The Closted Lesbians Who Love Them!
by Merlin_Ambrosius
, is what this movie should have been called instead of Beaver! No wonder Jodie Foster was so quick to defend 'Moral Mel'! I for one have always been sick of his hating anti-Semitic, misogynistic, racist, and homophobic rants, not to mention his religious moralizing which has gotten increasingly worse over the years. This a guy who (like his father) left the Catholic Church (way too liberal since Vatican II) to found his own religion, hired a Priest who left the church for similar reasons and makes his whole family attend masses where women and girls have to be veiled and covered from head to foot (burkas)ans spends his life drinking, drugging and cheating on his wife finally leaving her for his mistress with whom he has a child beats her and shakes the baby and tells her he hopes she is "Raped by a pack of ni____s!" not gang... not group... PACK! (I wonder what Danny Glover & Chris Rock must be thinking) Also while his mistress is pregnant we hear that he gets the boot from the hooker he has been cheating with on both his mistress and wife for wanting 'too violent sex'. All of this while he is still married. I am so sickened by this man I can't even watch and of his movies any more and I won't waste my money supporting him in this one. Tell this woman-beating anti-Semite to move to Saudi Arabia or Iran where he would be right at home. Never forget that his father moved to Australia to keep both his sons out of Vietnam. But when Mel came of age he was in no hurry to return to America and sign up. So Mel makes up for it by making lots of war movies with him as the hero culminating with a film called: 'We were Soldiers' but might better have been titled 'We Were Actors'. This John Wayne, Ronald Reagan Hollywood studio lot warrior is like all bullies: A big coward! Jodie Foster has one thing in common with 'Moral Mel': They both like to cheat on their wives and divorce them. That is one fucked up Hollywood friendship!

Nowhere near as good as the Mel Gibson produced "PAPARAZZI" in which a movie action star actually gets to murder a bunch of paparazii.

u just know the mashup of the beaver talking like mel on the phone is coming.
-
...I just stumbled upon an article about the movie that spoiled a major moment, and I now realize why everyone keeps describing the script as having dark elements to it. At least one moment in it won't be warm and fuzzy.
-
even if Mel wasn't in it this would still suck...Mel might actually help sell a few thousand more tickets...looks boring and stupid...a guy talking to a beaver puppet?...Jodie Foster made this crap?
-
but it's with a weird puppet and a racist. Yet a movie called "Black Swan" contains no racists OR puppets, yet two beautiful women having sex.<p> seems a little backwards, doesn't it?
-
Damaged man redeems himself, wins back his family and his life...well that's money that's staying firmly in my pocket. He's still a racist, woman-hating, homophobic nazi-minded nutjob.
-
If it's actually as painfully earnest and overwrought as this trailer suggests,..it's going to suck. Sorry Mel,..back to the padded room for you.

but a fair comment. You reap what you sow!

Man,Jodie hasn´t aged a day!

They should've just showed people's initial reactions to the beaver puppet and that's it.

Watching his racist, bipolor shenannigans would be box office gold.
-
To hell with the haters!
-
beaver? seriously? hello!

that if every actor was wire tapped and their privacy was constantly being invaded we would hear far, far worse shit from other actors we may respect more than we ever did Mel. Everyone on this planet says stupid crap that may be racist or hate-filled but lucky for us ours doesn't get recorded. You should hear me when I'm driving in traffic, far more vile stuff comes out of my mouth than we've heard from those Mel calls.
-
I'm not sure if I've ever read an entire script before, and I'm not sure where the strong curiosity came from, but I just spent the past couple hours reading the script to this movie. I'm on page 76 of....I think 110 pages. I couldn't stop reading. It's not that it's brilliant by any means, yet it's an easy and entertaining enough read. The best thing about this script/movie is that the idea seems silly and possibly-not-capable-of-making-a-good-movie, but there's also something strangely appealing about it. The script is definitely more dramatic and dark than this trailer is showing, but it's not really dramatic or dark. Just enough of both to give it more of a serious tone than a humorous tone. The story is surprisingly grounded, like it has the scale and budget of a tv show rather than a movie. As a result, even if they do a great job filming the script, I don't think this movie was ever going to win awards, even if Mel didn't land himself in controversy. The movie simply doesn't dream that big. In what I've read, there aren't hugely dramatic or comical scenes. It maintains this quick moving, steady pace of small moments. I'm liking it so far, though I'm not sure it's the kind of movie that people should highly anticipate. It seems like it could be the kind of movie to watch a little skeptical of it, and you might end up being a little impressed.
-
Her newly prominent cheekbones didn't grow in naturally! :}

I'm Jewish and detest his hypocrisy and poison. He's a disaster of a man but I must admit - he is compelling and alert. He is a ruinous human but possibly an aware actor and possibly an artist. I'm conflicted as to where art is enough and where art leaves us begging for some human decency. Leni Riefenstahl is the last person I can recollect that made me feel such things and I'm not the better for it.

Like she really had a good reason to name this movie this, and I am not buying the puppet?
-
I would love to seeing Mel film a movie about himself, one which depicts him going crazy with an increasing megalomania...and paranoia.
-
Here's a guy who's actually done his research. Nice Post. I will add however, that I believe Mel was abused by his Father. Yes, I'm counting forcing his religious beliefs upon his son as mental abuse. There was probably some physical thrown in there for good measure too. Mel has always had issues and left untreated, and combined with alcoholism have turned him into the man we see today. However, the strange thing about talent is that it is the last thing to go (like the old boxing adage that a 'Punch is the last thing to go.'). Mel is undeniably hugely talented, however, talent like that always comes at a price.
-
I made a really clever joke above, and got no reaction whatsoever. performers need audiences!!!
-
Two great Posts. Intelligent. All too rare on here. There's an old boxing adage that says 'a boxer's punch is the last thing to go'. Essentially saying that talent is independent of a person's belief system, age and perhaps even mental health.
-
I wanted to like this when I went to see it at a screening, but it's one of the worst movies I've ever seen. The tone is all over the place, there's zero chemistry between the actors, and what could be a great idea just falls flst. A real shame.
-
Mel Gibson is the fucking man and fuck that fat little bearded fad Galiafanikis if he caused Mel to lose his Hangover 2 part. If Danny Glover says he's racist I'll buy it till that day give Mel a fhucking break.

Everyone needs to get over this racism business. All human beings are inherently racist. It's part of our natural make-up. And if everyone's a racist then no one is. You're welcome.

by ISleptWithKathyBatesAndAllThatIGotWasThisStupidTalkbackName
I just made that up to annoy anyone scanning through the TB titles. But it would be awesome if that was true. The second half of the movie could be Mad Mel ranting at a jury that "the Beaver grabbed the Jew around the throat and wouldn't let go!"

I still don't get how Rapist Tyson was okay for The Hangover
by ISleptWithKathyBatesAndAllThatIGotWasThisStupidTalkbackName
But Racist Mel WASN'T okay for The Hangover 2. Is rape a lesser crime than racism?
-

ISlept etc...: no, the reason Tyson was cast and Mel wasn't...
by Chewtoy
...is because in the first Hangover the powers that be could give a fuck who the cast wanted to work with. In the second, they had the power to say "I don't want to work with him". That's it. No big conspiracy of political correctness. Hell, the same people who cast Tyson were the ones who had no problem casting Mel until someone further down the chain objected.
-
That if passing on one's religious beliefs to one's offspring counts as abuse, then there are four billion or so victims around. Atheism is also a belief system, and also virulent in some cases. What is the source of this "religion=evil" mentality around here?
-
The trailer makes it look like a cross between Death to Smoochy and Forrest Gump. Nice.
-
at the beginning. The film looks good, except for the cliched beaver toy plot. Can't wait to see this film.
-
First, this movie looks like another sappy feel good redemption movie so I will NOT see it unless it turns out NOT to be one. Second, fuck you brabon300. Gibson has every right in the fucking world to say whatever the fuck he wants just like you have the right to say whatever you want about him. GROW THE FUCK UP.

I'm not defending Gibson at all...but there seems to be a big do
by bames_jond
...he gets kicked out of the Hangover2 because of his racist and anti-semitic comments and generally wacked out behavior. I don't doubt he has major issues and I have serious issues with him, however, the Hangover stars have no problem working with Mike Tyson who is a convicted rapist and violent mofo; and Hollywood stars also have no problem working with Woody Allen who is now married to the women he helped raise as a child (no one sees a problem with this?). Not to mention all the actors clamoring to work with Roman Polanski who is convicted for raping a teen. This makes my head spin and stomach turn. So we live in a world where words in the media are damning but acts of rape (and other acts of turpitude -- yes I am looking at you Woody Allen)are forgiven? Now that is fucked up. Lets think this through a bit more. Hollywood should take a good look at itself before condemning Mel for being a racist because it's casting practices are historically racist in the extreme and continue to be so. Just look at the recent fiasco regarding the Hobbit. Apparently, there was a bit of a p.r. band-aid put over the fact that the casting person was telling agents and actors that hobbits could only be white. That was apparently never the case according to Peter Jackson, but I will bet money that we won't see any hobbits "of color" in this prequel the same way we only saw white Hobbits in LOTR. Fuck'n hypocrites, everyone of them. So the way I see it, Mel is partly a product of the system he works in, but Hollywood just doesn't like the look of its own reflection.
-
Everyone keeps saying that the stars couldn't object to who they worked with in the first film, but now they have the power to say who they will and will not work with in the second film. Okay, fine. Mike Tyson IS in the second film, so in essence, yes, they are saying that it is okay to rape and beat people, but not okay to be a nut or racist. Fuck the Hangover 2 and Galweonfpoienakis! If Gibson would have been allowed to go ahead and do his cameo, I would have been all over that shit. Now? Fuck the movie and Todd Phillips. I'll go see The Beaver (if it is ever released) just to support Mel and Jodie. I don't condone what Mel Gibson did, but there are much worse things done by most of the people judging him, so fuck them too.
-
Mel Gibson may have said some racist rants but he made a movie like Apocalypto with an all native and non english speaking cast. that act alone did more for minorities than anything hollywood has done in years.
-
Aside from the obvious Beaver jokes and the man-hating Jodie Foster this has problems. SERIOUS PROBLEMS. He looses his family, but his wife still loves him and wants him back? Right. 'I know, let's have pain, but not too much pain!'. And the whole, 'he works for a toy company and the beaver toy becomes a big hit'. Christ, what a feeble movie-of-the-week ploy. I thought this was going to be intense, weird, something different. Instead it just looks like the same old shit we've seen a hundred times before. EPIC FAIL.
-
He hires minorities, he works with minorities, he doesn't beat up or kill minorities (that I know of). Mel Gibson is just Angry! There's a big difference.
-
Would you please explain your reaction to the film in a bit more detail? I'm not questioning the authenticity of your statement ("I saw it") but your analysis is too unsubstantial to be taken at face value.
-
..period. I plan to see this movie.<br><br> I've always had a crush on Jodie Foster. She's also an awesome director. Only one of three....so far.

It's not my disgust for Gibson that'll keep me from seeing this
by gamerawangi
It's the fact, like most trailers these days, I was just shown the entire movie in less than 3 minutes!!!! Paying 10 bucks to sit there and think, "Okay, next comes..."? One word: Netflix.
-
Life long fan.<p>Damn the lies.
-
I saw it at a test screening at the Arclight in Sherman Oaks, CA back in march or april. At the time, they told me the movie was basically done. My problem with it stems from the tone. It's pretty dark throughout, especially with the family relationship (Several scenes where Anton Yelchin bangs his head through a wall because he's becoming like his dad), but then suddenly it'll be a light, breezy comedy and totally take me out of the movie. It's not a case of being a drama with comedy elements, it's a complete tonal shift from dark comedy to light comedy. Gibson's performance is pretty good, the problem is that despite the good stuff in the script the movie just doesn't work, a lot of that falls on the direction. Also, the reactions to the Beaver puppet just didn't work for me. He's the CEO of a toy corporation, and when he shows up with a Beaver puppet on his hand that says "I'm calling the shots now" everyone's like "ok cool." There's also B story with Yelchin selling term papers that goes nowhere. It also felt way too long, I don't remember the actual runtime but it felt like it went on forever, simply because it was so much of the same thing over and over again. Once the movie enters the midpoint, it's just the same scene of "take that puppet off your hand" and the puppet arguing with them over and over and over. Really, it's one of those great ideas that makes a great script but just doesn't work as a movie.
-
the same dolts who wont work with Gibson for his anti-semitic rants when drunk are the same ones who will work with Polanski, Woody Allen, and the rest of those wrecks.
-
...that I would compare to the script of The Beaver. In Good Company keeps coming to mind because The Beaver has this low-budget yet still Hollywood scale to it, and they both address dark-ish stories while maintaining the kind of mainstream movie appeal that won't alienate viewers. I like the person that mentioned Stranger than Fiction because both scripts have a little drama and a little humor, never fully committing to one over the other. Someone could also use American Beauty as a reference point, but only because The Beaver also has the dad's storyline going on for most of the movie and a separate storyline for the dad's child (in this case: the son), who has met someone at school.
-
whats up with that? they have you on the take?

Have you considered what the least common denominator is in your examples? Tyson, Polanski, Allen... They're all liberals. That makes what they did okay. Mel is a conservative. That doesn't make what he did okay.<P>Doesn't matter what Tyson did was proven and what Mel did is only alleged. Doesn't matter that Polanski was extradited and what Mel did is only alleged. Doesn't matter that Allen appears to perhaps have problems when Mel appears to perhaps have problems. You dig?<P>Oh, sure, Hollowood gets their hackles raised about Mel being an anti-semite. Meanwhile, their messiah makes the Israeli Prime Minister enter and exit the white house by the service entrance where the trash is piled up. Doesn't matter that Code Pink enables the flotilla gorillas. Doesn't matter that Israel is under attack day after day. Mel, the conservative, said something awful about Jews, dammit!!one!<P>Liberals love "diversity" ...only on the OUTSIDE. Never on the inside. Doesn't help that Mel is an eeeBUL Catholic either.

It starts like a house of fire and then fizzles beneath the weight of a premise it can't pay off. I've never really understood the hype surrounding it.

<p>I hate to admit, that as much as Mel Gibson repels me, and as little as I care about Jodi Foster (I don't hate or like her; just don't think about her at all) this trailer interests me enough to see the film because I suspect that Mel could use a friend like that beaver puppet in real life. </p>

Now, I'm not rushing to Gibsons defense or sympathizing for him, but isn't Gibsons scandal pretty low on the totem pople of awful/stupid/fucked up things celebrities do sometimes? I mean look at it, Mike Tyson, accused rapist, Michael Jackson, accused child molester,O.J Simpson, accused murder, Charlie Sheen, accused drug user and hooker beater upper. I know you can't judge too soon, and they've maintained there innocence, but that still doesn't shake the controversies. Gibson losing his shit and saying the things he did is not cool, but compared to those other ones, seems kinda low if you ask me. And the truth is, no matter what, life goes on.
-
as in low on the totem pole. But what he did was pretty low too.
-
Looks like a combination of shitty kids movies meets shitty hallmark/lifetime movie. Jodie Foster could have made something much more better. I mean, she's been in the buisness long enough and worked with enough talented people, Scorsese and Demme for instance, to have picked up on something. Can't say this is a must see for me, although, after seeing him as Chekov in Star Trek, I like Anton Yelchin and think he's been a pretty good actor so far.
-
Fuck that russian gold digging cunt that is trying to bring him down. In the old days Mel would never let her blow him, he could have fucked any chick he wanted. But alas as you hit the mid 50's and the looks start to fade your dick is a lot less picky and you get stuck with some cunt from hell trying to rip you off.
-
And how he only talks through it, sort of remind you of Danny Torance in The Shining with Toby and all that? What are some other movies with mentally damaged/disturbed characters who only talk through puppets or imaginary freinds?
-
atheism is not a "belief system". Theres no belief involved. Its based on evidence.

His movies are awesome;Passion,Apocalypto etc.The Viking movie can still be made without Leo, He can get a better actor other then Leo. Leo is a little overated!

You all remember when passion of the christ came out right? That was then this is now, religion related issues will always strike up debate and the like. Well, remember all those idk, assholes let's say, I mean that in past tense, how they all came out to it's/his defense, and they all said "Oh,he's such a good catholic! He's not an anti-semite,oh,this is just the religously bigoted media attacking him and us and our faith", and then those tapes come out, and so does the trurh. Now, I don't mean this to be against religion or catholicism or anyone who is catholic, however, there is one person out there who I hope is really feeling like an asshole after all of this, and that's Bill Donohue of the catholic league. Why do I hope he feels like an asshole? I'll tell you. When Opie And Anthony came back on the air after getting fired for the second time, the sex for same in the st.patricks cathedral, which I gotta say, wasn't too cool for them to do, but I don't think they should have been fired for it, well, Donohue led the campaign to get them kicked off of over that, which isn't why I'm upset with him. When they came back on in 04, O and A actually had the decency to apologize to Donohue for what they did,he accepted, and they made nice. But at some time after that, Donohue went on a moralistic campaign against them, after they apologized and made nice. So I'm pissed at him for being a back stabbing little weasel of an s.o.b. I can provide clips to back this up if you want to hear it.

First of all, Woody Allen was Mia Farrow's long time live in boyfriend/basically husband while she was raising Soon Yi Previn, so to think they had no contact or role in bringing her up even though she was not his legally adopted child is just naive and idiotic. The fact that he started dating her after Farrow suggests the opposite. In law enforcement it is called "grooming" when an adult does this. There have been many instances of teachers who have been prosecuted for starting a relationship with a student when they come of age. It is highly suspect and creepy behavior and Woody Allen's sexual relationship with his quasi adopted daughter definitely raises a host a questions about the nature of his relationship with her and his intentions while she was underage.

Mel is back. Not Edge of Darkness back, because it wasn't a great movie, but back back.

IT'S NOT MORALLY WRONG TO HOOK UP WITH YOUR ADOPTED DAUGHTER?
by BringingSexyBack
Are you for real?
-
Her adoptive mother's husband. What more clarification do you need? He violated a clear line of decency and, yes, morality.
-
Let me say first that I more-or-less agree with your point-- yes, there is racism in Hollywood-- but are you really going to bring up the absence of "black" hobbits as an example? I really don't know if all-white hobbits are a good idea or not-- you could make some good arguments on either side, I think. (
-
Hit reply way too soon. Anyway, what was I saying. Oh yeah, HOBBITS. Always seemed to me that Hobbits of the Shire were a small, rather homogenous community that did not often intermarry with outsiders (Look at those family trees-- everyone is somebody's cousin). Also, it's always seemed to me that medieval Ireland/Britain were obvious inspirations for the Shire. So no, not entirely unreasonable that all the locals should be pale-skinned. You can disagree with that but let's not call Jackson a racist simply because of this disagreement.

"Have you considered what the least common denominator is in your examples? Tyson, Polanski, Allen... They're all liberals. That makes what they did okay. Mel is a conservative. That doesn't make what he did okay. Doesn't matter what Tyson did was proven and what Mel did is only alleged. Doesn't matter that Polanski was extradited and what Mel did is only alleged. Doesn't matter that Allen appears to perhaps have problems when Mel appears to perhaps have problems. You dig? Oh, sure, Hollowood gets their hackles raised about Mel being an anti-semite. Meanwhile, their messiah makes the Israeli Prime Minister enter and exit the white house by the service entrance where the trash is piled up. Doesn't matter that Code Pink enables the flotilla gorillas. Doesn't matter that Israel is under attack day after day. Mel, the conservative, said something awful about Jews, dammit!!one! Liberals love "diversity" ...only on the OUTSIDE. Never on the inside. Doesn't help that Mel is an eeeBUL Catholic either." I'm not liberal or conservatice, I'm a realist. Obama is not my messiah and I don't hold my breath for politicians, that's another story for another time, but, double standards and bullshit are double standards and bullshit, and people are now wisening up more and more and realizing this. They're right when they point out how Polanksi,Tyson and the like get a free pass, and Gibson, while I disagree with him on alot, and I really have little to no sympathy for him, get's the way he's treated, and the others have the luxury of everyone else looking the other way. I mean, maybe that's just the weirdness of hollywood. Code Pink is very, very bad btw.
-
Yes Tyson served time for his crime. As much as if you or I were convicted for sexual assault? Probably not, but he was behind bars. It's the producers and director of Hangover and its sequel that cast him, and wanted another "hot button" celeb to cameo in the sequel. Remember they played with the idea of casting Tiger Woods for a cameo? So now they have to settle for a former President who is unfortunately best known for being caught with his goo on a chubbie's dress.
-
I mean, do I care that Gibson didn't a cameo in hangover 2? No. Would it have really really bothered me if he had been, no. But, it is a good point when people point out, well, they looked the other way when Tyson, a convicted rapist shows up in the first one,and no one says anything. I know he's maintained his innocence, but that still doesn't shake the controversy. I mean, if we're gonna hold out celebrities up to a certain higher standard, which is total bullshit in so many ways, then let's make it across the board? No, Polanksi hasn't gotten off easily, but when you have people petitioning to let him back into the country, and they say things like he's such a nice man this and that, and Gibson becomes a public pariah, well, my b.s detector flashes code red. And it probably is as Immoral_fish said, it's a political double standard. I'm not defending Gibson or sympathizing for him, but a double standard is a double standard.

I FEEL EMPATHY FOR MEL BECAUSE HE WAS CLEARLY PROVOKED
by BringingSexyBack
Provoked by the ADL crowd over Passion, provoked by a skank gold digger. You know, provocation works. <P> We all know from Mel's supporters that his real persona is very different from his public one. It's clear that all the provocation took a toll on him, and that's why the vast majority view him rightly as a victim of circumstances. <P> Here is a man wrongly persecuted in the public eye. In the name of decency alone we should rally against that.

Maybe what I've said has been taken the wrong way. But, like as has been said, it doesn't raise and eyebrow or two when for Tyson,Polanski, and Simpson, for the murder case, not his robbery one,or Michael Jackson, and people look the other way. But Gibson is now made into a pariah? I know why he is with the whole religion thing, and the problems that go with that, believe me I can the bullshit that's there, but for them to not hold everyone to the same standard makes me go whoa.
-
His own fault. He's been in the industry long enough to know and how to tell and how to spot em coming.
-
You just don't get it. Mel is not being victimized. It's hard frame anyone with his money and privilege as a victim. I would hope even Mel would agree he created his a mess through his behavior. Or maybe he's a total ass an doesn't accept responsibility for his words; who knows. Who cares. I don't. I think me and a few here are merely pointing out a media bias exists in this instance. It is in fact a double standard, and a bizarre one at that. My examples of those, such as Jonny Depp, Harrison Ford and others who have no problem working with Polanski (a rapist pedophile) (-oh yeah, lets not forget the Academy that embraces his work and gave him an Oscar) as well as those who are willing to work with Tyson on the Hangover 2 (a convicted rapist) but have a problem working with someone, like Mel, who has made drunken slurs against Jews and black people...it comes off as a little bit sanctimonious, warped, and inconsistent considering it seems to condone criminal behavior but at the same time objects, and takes the high road toward bigoted attitudes and speech. That to me makes poor sense. Mel, was given a role, then had it taken away from him based on the outcry and sensitivities of the stars of that film which were offended by his employment. Again, to my mind, it's preposterous to employ a rapist and then reject someone based on some moral sliding scale that deems "drunken hate speech" the greater crime. Why not get rid of both of them and cast two other guys who could use the work, who aren't rapists or racists if you have a problem with it? As for Woody Allen, he was acting in the capacity of a father for some 17 years with Soon Yin, even though she was not legally adopted. So his relationship with her is, in fact, inappropriate in the extreme. If you can't see that, I feel sorry for you because you, my friend, are a fool.
-
Oh, yeah, sorry for all the crappy run on sentences and dropped words -I was writing quickly.
-
As someone who has a few female friends who have been the victim of rape, I don't think I'd be willing to forgive a friend who raped someone or perpetrated violence against any group or individual. I also don't condone hate speech either, but I could forgive someone who had said something without thinking it through or meaning it, or in a drunken state. I, however, also don't have a value system that operates on a sliding logarithmic scale. And yes, I have been forced to work with those who have uttered hateful speech toward my ethnicity. I also don't defend them. I am not defending Gibson but people often say things they don't mean and regret. Gibson has said he was sorry for his remarks. Like I said Faulkner -I am just pointing out a media bias. And, as I said before, Hollywood is a racist system to begin with, just go to any video store and you will see most visible minorities are relegated to minor roles in American films. This is not an accurate representation of the diversity that exists in America because it is often only white males who are leads. It is what we call structural racism when all the opportunities are only available to one very privileged group. So, as I said before, Gibson and his remarks are partly the product of the cultural context he lives in as a privileged white male.
