Sam Mendes Still Directing BOND 23 (Says Kate Winslet), Project’s ‘Back On’ Per Composer David Arnold!!
Merrick here...
As we’ve previously mentioned, the next James Bond movie has been perpetually delayed by MGM’s recent money woes. For a while it looked like said delays would last indefinitely, although recent indications…and word of MGM’s impending recovery…suggest another 007 production should finally be ramping up sometime next year.
Leaving a significant question: would director Sam Mendes (AMERICAN BEAUTY, JARHEAD) remain on the picture given how long it’s taken to get the project rolling? We knew he’d been talking about the next 007 installment with The Powers That Be, but that didn’t necessarily mean his association with the show would weather delay after delay, and even a full-on shut down.
Now comes word that Mendes is, indeed, still with the movie. Over at the Daily Mail, Kate Winslet (who separated from Mendes last year) says that ’Sam is doing the next Bond film’ and reveals her intent to move to England with their children for a while, to reduce Mendes’ commute from New York to the film’s U.K. shoot. Find more details HERE .
Interesting.
This dovetails with a new interview with current Bond composer David Arnold, who said ’We only just got the news that we’re back on…’ and pointedly asserts Daniel Craig’s continued involvement in THIS interview with Film Music Magazine.
So, it sounds like BOND 23 (working title only) is coming together again…at long last. More as we know more.

I was beginning to doubt those immortal words: "James Bond Will Return."
-
At last! Wonder if I'm the first to say that ;-)

Bond in a robe watching the sunset cooling his balls = gayest Bond scene ever

ist must be made, it's to important for MGM studios. Bring it on.

Asimov... getting a little testy over Bond's testes are we?
by zillabeast
Sorry, couldn't resist.

No problem, because it was funny.
-
to be holdin onto this opportunity for so long. Del Toro certainly didn't need The Hobbit. Then again, GDT is a good director who has only gotten better as he's gone on.
-
Yes! Another Bond theme tune to add to my playlist.<p> The Dojo never heard a Bond song it didn't like. Yes, even the wussy ones.... "On an all time hiiiiiigh...."<p>
-
... am I still allowed to like his film when I want to bang his ex?
-
...I'd almost agree with you, but I can't stand Die Another Day. but who should sing the next one? I'd love a real powerhouse woman to sing it. Annie Lennox, Adele, or maybe that gal from AI, Melissa Doolittle.
-
Sweet, David Arnold's back. That's news in and of itself.<p> Also Merrick, yes, we realize that is a working title.
-
Would be to write down some random words and then draw them out of a hat. <p> Words such as, Kill, Killing, Die, Death, Gold, Golden, Always, Never, Forever, Tomorrow, Yesterday, Only, For, You, The, In, Of, Quantum.
-
Now let's have some more action with QUANTUM.

could be right??

Quantum Of Solace is brilliant if taken with Casino Royale

as one epic James Bond flick. <p>But as a stand alone film it was definately lacking.

David Arnold has certainly earned the right to stay on as compos
by The_Genteel_Gentile
I would never begrudge the man that. And I'm a big fan of Arnold's work. But man I'd LOVE to here a Thomas Newman 007 score. If Mendes were to bring Newman along for the ride I would be even more over the moon about this. But I'm hyped as is and David Arnold really does deserve to have first rejection rights. At least we know the music will always be safe as long as it's in Arnold's capable hands.

-Comprehensible camerawork.<BR><BR>-A decent title song that's actually utilized throughout the underscore. Where are John Barry and Shirley Bassey when you need them...?<BR><BR>-A completely self-contained plot. Have QUANTUM pulling the strings, but don't have it be a direct sequel to the last two films. Goldfinger had nothing to do with SPECTRE, unlike the other Connery Bonds of the 60's, and it's the best damn one.<BR><BR>Women who are sexy, competent AND interesting. Olga Kurlyenko was hot, but was one of the most BORING Bond Girls in history. At least Denise Richsrds and Halle Berry made me literally mad. Kurlyenko made NO impression on me whatsoever.<BR><BR>Don't edit the movie down to 90 minutes (minus credits) and just have the plot skip from one poorly-shot and edited action setpiece to another. Casino Royale spread out its action, and thus those scenes had a lot more impact when they did occur.
-
I do agree, solo film experience? Not so much. The third act of Casino Royale? Pretty decent. It's basically all the action sequences, and makes Casino Royale a, what, 4 hour bond movie?
-
I would actually like if it turns out that a minor league Quantum baddie like Mr White turns out to be the big cheese. Slow reveal, underneath your nose the whole time. Anyway, this movie really should deal with Quantum, if only they built it up so damn much in the last 2 flicks.
-
getting this film finally moving,Craig will kick even more ass! Third should be a good one!
-
Or Sade AND Joe Cocker for that matter! <p>Or... <p>Annie Lennox <p>Rod Stewart <p>Mick Jagger <p>David Bowie <p>Dolores O'Riordan <p>David Gilmore <p>Nick Cave <p>Elton John <p>Roger Daltrey <p>AC/DC <p>Radiohead <p>Travis <p>Mark Knopfler <p>Jeff Lynne <p>Peter Gabriel <p>Phil Collins <p>Sinead O'Connor <p>Robert Plant <p>Roger Waters <p>Ozzy Osbourne <p>Bono <p>Adele <p>Damien Rice <p>Def Leppard <p>George Michael <p>Sting <p>Seal <p>Tears For Fears <p>Van Morrison <p>Peter Frampton <p>Florence And The Machine <p>Natasha Bedingfield <p>Oasis <p>The Verve <p>Dido <p>Joss Stone <p>Gabriella Cilmi <p>Jet <p>Coldplay <p>Franz Ferdinand <p>Robbie Williams <p>Des'ree <p>Duffy <p><p>Bring in a heavy hitter this time and no yanks. Ideally Bond should be sang by a subject of her majesty the queen, I mean he is BRITISH! And let David Arnold and Don Black write the song or at least collaborate with the artist, no more Madonna or Jack White and Alisha Keys original pop songs on my 007 movies! If the song's not going to be a part of the score themes as well then just forget it. And for pity sake at least get someone who can really sing this time!
-
Just on the personal front, mind you, he's an exceptional filmmaker. But to allow it in any way not to work out with Kate Friggin Winslet, the most beautiful woman in the world. You do ANYTHING to make it work with her.
-
The one big fault with QoS was the action. It was too fast. A rewrite of the script wouldn't have hurt either. There are some great ideas they can go with the third of what we can call the Quantum cycle, and hopefully they can keep Craig for some time to come. Excellent Bond.

I'd be down for Murphy belting out a Bond song. Have her shadowed face and silhouette in the opening credit sequence, too. As far as the movie goes, get on with it like, last week! I'm so ready.
-
From what i understand, she was supposed to have done the theme for Quantum.
-
That was a joke, right? Heh.
-
I haven't seen that happen in a good long while. But I obviously can't make an Amy Winehouse crack joke before Dreadlock has posted his comment. Weird.
-
You have to put a fucking list together of unreliable UK newsrags.
-
I was hoping Mendes had passed on the project or was too busy to return to it. He's a solid director, but is completely unproven when it comes to action. And well, when you hire a non-action movie director to do a Bond flick, Quantum of Solace is the pathetic result. They rely on shaky-cam and quick-cutting as a crutch to mask their lack of knowledge of what makes for enjoyable action, car chase, and fight choreography. Why, oh why won't EON hire Pierre Morel to direct a Bond movie? He would be PERFECT. Or better yet... bring back Martin Campbell.
-
I believe he worked on a theme for Quantum with Amy Winehouse. I don't know if it was ever completed. I'd love to hear it if it was.
-
Already mentioned it.

I thought Quantum was fantastic and the first direct sequel
by Nomoredirtyanything
If you take it in one sitting with the sublime Casino Royale it is merely the icing on the cake.

Didn't have any problems with it, if it was taken as what it was intended to be: episode two of a longer story arc.

The action in Quantum Of Solace was too fragmented.
by The_Genteel_Gentile
There was little fluidity or established geography. It was too much a case of "directing by inserts". Just a bunch of close-ups rapidly cut together.
-
First of all Road To Perdition and Jarhead both had extremely well executed scenes of violence. <p>Second off, Sam Mendes doesn't need to be an action director. That's what Bond staple 2nd unit action directors Vic Armstrong, Alexander Witt and Simon Crane are for.<p>I think the problem with QOS's action was that Marc Forster obviously fancied himself an action director which he clearly is not. I can't imagine QOS 2nd unite director Dan Bradley is behind the choice to shoot everything as incoherent inserts.<p>I truely believe Mendes is a perfect choice. He's a brilliant director of drama and has an elegance to his filmmaking craft that QOS sorely lacked. Mendes has a genuine eye for structure, momentum and fine acting. I'm excited he's still on board.

Guys, if you want to hear the REAL QOS title song...
by The_Genteel_Gentile
Look up "No Good About Goodbye" by Dame Shirley Bassey from her 2009 album "The Performance". it was written by fellow 007 veterans David Arnold and Don Black and was clearly their song written for Quantum Of Solace.<p>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEAWlUKRHHk (remove spaces)

And she's not ashamed of it. We need more women in Hollywood like her so that young girls know you don't have to look like the next America's top model to be attractive. Which, btw, if you're a 6' woman and weigh 103 pounds, you're gross.
-
but I remember a piece I saw about the writer's strike mentioning several films severely affected by it; one of them was Quantum of Solace. As I recall, Paul Haggis was racing to finish a first draft by the deadline for the strike; then no one could do any work on it for months, and when the strike was over, whoever did the second draft was racing the start of filming, not a situation usually conducive to fine screenplays. (On the other hand, they were rewriting Casablanca as it filmed, and didn't know who Ilsa left with till the night before the scene was shot, so sometimes it works. But in general, not.)<p> The other film I remember being mentioned in this connection was Transformers 2, which would have been lousy anyway, but maybe only as lousy as the first one if they'd had a completed script. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who knows more about the strike's impact on other films.
-
isn't Diamonds are Forever a direct sequel, with Bond chasing Blofeld all over the world to take revenge for his killing Bond's wife? Admittedly, it's my least favorite Connery Bond, so I haven't seen it in quite a while. (Come on, jewel thief Tiffany Case knows who Bond is after finding his wallet, and tells Connery, "You can't kill James Bond and get away with it!"? What part of "secret agent" did they not understand? Objection #342: collect them all!) Still, I seem to recall some remark referring back to OHMSS; is my memory playing me for a fool?
-
You're right; I'd forgotten that. Thanks for reminding me.
-
(pressed the post button too soon) the Russia With Love references establish it happens after Dr. No, but wouldn't make it a direct sequel, since it doesn't continue any plot threads from the previous film, whereas if Bond is chasing Blofeld in DAF seeking vengeance for Tracy, it arguably would. That is, DAF doesn't continue any other plot elements from OHMSS, but Bond's motivation would carry over. Clear? (I hope...)
-
I consider QOS about as direct a sequel as you can get, both plotwise and in the emotional arc Bond follows. After the apparent killing of Blofeld at the beginning, nothing in DAF suggests any continuing emotional baggage from OHMSS, and the broad humorous tone of it contradicts its predecessor. There was more genuine sorrow when Moore goes to Tracy's grave in the opening to FYEO, and I'm not a big Moore fan (though I do think FYEO is his best Bond film, and that scene is part of the reason).
-
Would be sick. Search your feelings, you know it to be true.
-
...and since he consummated the marriage, clearly it was legit. But do you think they celebrated any anniversaries? I think it's pretty clear the only women Bond has deep feelings for were Tracy in OHMSS & Vesper in Casino Royale. (Though his feelings seem to run a little deeper than usual for Sophie Marceau in TWINE, perhaps. Perhaps)
-
there's not way in hell mendes would be doing a 007 film if he didn't have an actor of craig's caliber in the role.
-
would make a great theme song. Especially with the darker, more serious Bond. Maybe Muse or Massive Attack would work but I can't see either of those artists getting asked.
-
Nice round tits do not constitute a well rounded news source.

Kate Winslet is not a Bond girl. She is destined to play M 20 years from now.

Seen them recently and they perform the Bond Theme as a band before Live & Let Die. Would love to see what they could do with a Bond tune.. YCBM was as much a part of T2 as Arnie!

...Kate Winslet is back on the market! She's a dimepiece!

How is the prospect of Sam Mendes directing a mumbling, morose Daniel Craig in a Barbara Broccoli approved Bond film a good thing? And I use the term 'Bond film' in the loosest possible sense of the word.
