First pics from Malick's TREE OF LIFE hit the net!

Published at: Dec. 3, 2010, 10:25 a.m. CST by quint

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here to share a couple of pictures from Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life. This seems to be the day of studios releasing pics from their perpetually delayed releases. First it was the Mel Gibson dark comedy THE BEAVER and now Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life, starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn and, I’m sure, some amazing Texas scenery. The first photos just seem to be there to show everybody that famous people are in this movie and as such aren’t exactly show-stopping images, but worth a look dontcha think?

More than dazzling us with the beauty surely contained in the movie this release more marks the first step of a marketing campaign, which means the road to release is less of a mirage in the desert and suddenly more real. The film is finally coming, folks. And the villagers rejoice. -Quint quint@aintitcool.com Follow Me On Twitter

    Sounds interesting.

    by Ironhelix

Too bad I won't see it because of the two pieces of shit that are headlining it. Sean Penn in particular is so stupid that he's dangerous.

The name "Terrence Malick" should be all the motivation you need. You know, the guy who directed "Days of Heaven," "The Thin Red Line," and "The New World."

Ironhelix, where do you get off calling Sean Penn stupid?

    by Stifler's Mom

If you were to say you don't agree with his political views, that's fair enough. But stupid? I suppose you think you're smart enough to write a film like The Crossing Guard or direct a film like Into the Wild? Ha.

    Terrence Malick

    by Kammich

A few months ago when Beaks was talking about "Tree of Life" on this very website, I commented that I had never seen any of Malick's films, and many of you suggested that I rectify that fact. And I have... to the tune of watching all 4 of his films in the last 2 weeks. And I can honestly say that I feel like a better film fan because of it.
From the outset, I knew Malick had his detractors. Almost 50% of the people who've seen his films write them off as plot-less, slow "photography exhibitions." His reliant use of narration in all of his films also seems to be bother some people, even being labeled as "lazy storytelling." But, for my money, sometimes a slow-moving picture with absolutely jaw-dropping photography that tells the story through visuals is just what the doctor ordered. You have to be in the mood for the slow burn, I guess. Sometimes I'm just in the mood for a "High Tension" slasher, and sometimes I'm in the mood for a whiz-bang action comedy like "Scott Pilgrim." But the last 2 weeks, I've been in the mood for Terrence Malick films.
Perhaps what surprised me the most was that the film of his that I was least looking forward to, ended up being my favorite work of his: "Days of Heaven." Easily one of the most lush, gorgeous films I've ever seen. The dialog is so limited and sparing, but the striking imagery and hypnotic score by Ennio Morricone help tell one of the most compelling romantic thrillers I've ever seen, using few words at all. THAT is a testament to great filmmaking.
"Badlands" is another gorgeous film with two great lead performances. "The Thin Red Line" weaves a huge cast of bombastically talented actors and manages to tell a great, contained war story. And "The New World," while my least favorite film of Malick's, is a great, fresh take on a classic story(and he actually coaxes a good performance out of Colin Farrell).
Anyway, I'm rambling and I don't think anyone gives a damn around here, but hey. All of what I've said in this post amounts to exactly why "Tree of Life" is one of my most anticipated films of 2011.

Just that one post of yours is enough to balance out all the "Malick is boring" bullshit that Malick-related talkbacks usually prompt. DAYS OF HEAVEN is my favorite too, but the man hasn't made anything short of a masterpiece yet.

    by chainsaw_shawn

Oh wait they said tree of life, not tree of might! my bad. it would make a nifty movie though.

I really hope this doesn't tank

    by justmyluck

I don't want to see Malick doing "Silver Surfer 2 : waxing poetic" for street cred. Damn, this "The Tree of Life" seems to be precious, labored and esoteric. The supposed involvement of Douglas Trumbull is promising. Good luck, everybody.

    by Ironhelix

Sean Penn is an idiot. Period. Have you ever seen an interview with him? He's borderline retarded. I will credit his ability to direct movies to some sort of Idiot-Savant syndrome. Let's not forget he is a fucking traitor, and should face a firing squad. And while we are on the subject, fuck Jane Fonda too.

What's up with the rocks and wood pole...

    by Jaka

...to the right in the Penn image?

Don't actually care about these images because I'm seeing this in a big ass theater no matter what. Nothing short of it not being released is going to stop that.

  • Dec. 4, 2010, 12:07 a.m. CST

Oh it WILL likely tank, but who cares?

    by Jaka

Those of us who take the time to see it in a theater will always have that memory. And then over the next ten years it will slowly become acknowledged as a classic on Blu-Ray. *shrug*

You know it's Malick when -

    by justmyluck

    - the natural light cinematography looks gangbusters even through a misaligned cam phone. Thanks to whomever did the honors. I mentioned Douglas Trumbull up the thread and "The Tree of Life" trailer reminds me a bit of his film "Brainstorm", with the 'memory-bubbles' and reminiscences cross-cut with all the 70MM out-of-body spectral visual effects. I guess Malick is trying to flip perspectives between the gritty/human foibles of family life against THE BIG COSMIC PICTURE. At least, I hope that's it. "The Tree of Life" better reference a schoolbook lesson the boy reads or something...the movie title is pretty bloated considering the galactic stuff.

    So tempted!

    by Kammich

I'm really tempted to click that link and watch the camera phone capture of the trailer... but alas, I'm going to wait. "Black Swan" doesn't hit my area until next Friday, so unless an HD-quality version of the trailer hits the net before then, I'll just see it before "Swan." Either way, I'm relieved just to hear that the trailer really does exist.
