See Craig Ferguson's Bizarre & Unaired Musical Opening For His DOCTOR WHO/Matt Smith Episode!!
Merrick here...
A few weeks ago we referenced Matt Smith's appearance on Craig Ferguson's LATE SHOW. Smith is, of course, the current "Doctor" on DOCTOR WHO - introduced on the now-concluded, mostly excellent fifth season of the series
.
Those who tuned in to THE LATE SHOW may've seen this "cold open", in which Ferguson explained that his plans to begin the episode with a dance number set to Ron Grainer's DOCTOR WHO theme music had been thwarted - the legal clearance to use said music had, evidently, not been obtained.
Well, his lost DOCTOR WHO musical opening has now been leaked via YouTube and appears through the embed below. In the number, Ferguson & Co. dance and sing their contextualization of the DW mythos for those who may not know much about it.
It is, predictably, bizarre and glorious madness. Take a look.
Thanks to my man Robogeek (his Twitter's HERE) for pointing us towards this.
On a related note, Murray Gold's extraordinary, enormous score for the series' fifth season is now available on CD or MP3 download from Amazon UK (HERE). 'Tis some of the finest music you'll currently find, or may ever find, on television. Here are a few samples…
This is, by the way, pretty amazing music to spin while playing CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS. Just sayin'...

This guy is hilarious on a regular basis. What's it going to take to get this guy on earlier?
-
Craig Ferguson is great!
-
I'm not a big Craig Ferguson fan, but that was pretty cool!
-
I was bummed right along with Mr. Ferguson about not being able to see the dance number open. So glad it was posted online. Loved it! Also, you are right about the soundtrack to the fifth season of Doctor Who. I have never enjoyed a television soundtrack as much as I did for this past season of Who. The I Am The Doctor piece you posted, I have loved that piece of music ever since I heard snatches of in the first episode.
-
and he has no budget for that show
not sure how they couldnt get clearance when they are promoting the show

-
ORBITAL and is called "Doctor ?" its on "The Altogether" album.
-
Amen to that notion! The videos were really funny.
-
Craig's a genuine fan and bloody hilarious!
-
TV shows feel like they have been too conservative with music for too long ... it's wonderful to have a show that really lets loose with the orchestra. Each season has had one theme that absolutely floored me - the "something blue" scene was did it for me in season 5.
-
And on a personal note, I am going to marry that girl in the white hat. Oh yes, somehow it's going to happen.
-
that entire show was great, with a little added edge because you could tell Ferguson was genuinely pissed for the first half hour of the show they couldn't show the cold opening. And while I may feel a lot of naustalgia for other hosts, Ferguson's interviews are hands down the best on television. Nobody comes close.

Dr Who Theme music............................................
by blackflowerX
Actually DRUNKROCKERS the Orbital track is a cover (all be it one of the best versions) .
The origional was made by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop in 1963(They did some amazing shit)

Check out;
http://tinyurl.com/yrqcb8

(Don't hate me ...I'm just a tragic nerd lol, Delia Derbyshire is one of my musical heroes, as are Orbital....)

;P
-
And that was a fuckin' great opening...
-
'The triumph of intellect and romance over brute force and cynicism.' That's brilliant. Gotta share this with my friends over in England.
-
for the link to the Murray Gold soundtrack, I had no idea this was out. Some great Doctor Who music there.
-
Can be found on whomix.windbubble dot net. It's all original mixed in various genres of music. I've got like 10-15 cool ones on my Mac. I've recently written Harry a long diatribe on why he should be watching this show. It's really been a solid run since coming back on air. I wasn't a huge fan in the 1980's, but caught a few back in the day and love the new series. If you're a fan of the show or this tune def check out this site for more fan-mixed versions.
-
..."White Lines" cold open.
-
IN YOUR PANTS!
-
I love Craig, but then I admire most of the late night hosts... Minus the ones on NBC.
-
I don't watch his openings or monologue.
-
...is the only thing I watch on network TV on a regular basis. He actually seems to give a damn about his job and entertaining people.
-
Like, genuine comedy laughs. And he does it on a pretty regular basis. Best of the late night guys by far, imo. I still love Dave, but he's just regular old Dave these days. Craig DOES try hard and his IS a great interviewer. I love that he mentions what the person is on the show for during their introduction but then RARELY lets them shell or promote the product during the interview. Just goes off on some random line of questioning. Great stuff.
-
...is FINE!
-
"The triumph of intellect and romance over brute force and cynicism." That sums up everything that is Doctor Who and why I've been watching for nearly 30 years. Thank you Craig!
-
Only Craig would dare to do something like this-- which is why I prefer him to all the other late night guys. Plus I'm a Doctor Who fan from way back, which makes it twice the awesome.
-
But then the two babes showed up, so that was okay.
-
and that the whole "we had an awesome musical number" was some kind of meta gag or something. But that was quite cool
-
Bit of trivia for those who like that music... In the first River Song appearance, the episode in the library, you can hear bits of this theme. Nice bit of foreshadowing for the eleventh doctor.
-
without question. He does tons of improv, and is consistently smart and very funny night after night. I'm really surprised more people haven't picked up on how good he is. Oh and the Doctor Who cold open - fuckin awesome! (and not just in my pants!)
-
the word is 'albeit'.
-
That was truly incredible. Now I understand why Craig was getting so angry that they couldn't use it in the show.
-
It really pisses me off when folks say that Murray Golds score ruins Dr Who..the man is a fucking genius! His score are a gazillion times better than most movie scores these days. Take "Amys theme" if that had been written for the new Harry Potter movie by a well known composer everyone would have raved over it. I bet a few yrs down the road this guy will be scoring a hollywood flick..no doubt
-
criticising. They are complaining that his loud and bombastic music frequently overwhelms a scene, and even dialog. But this is not Murray's fault. It's the fault of who ever is mixing the sound. The sound engineer, or whatever the TV equivalent is.
-
I had the pleasure of watching Doctor Who Live recently. Simply stunning!
-
They have all of the cool shit there.
-
wonderful chaps...both of them! FANTASTIC!

Glad to see what in the hell Ferguson was talking about...
by Shut the Fuck up Donny
I, like V'shael, thought it was a meta-joke when I watched the episode.
I really need to start DVRing his show. I am always entertained by him. His stand-up is a really quite good, too.
-
of Craig, his show goes up on Youtube regularly, split into 5 parts. Some of his all-time classic episodes are still getting regular traffic.

I'd recommend - any time Kristin Bell is on the show, they have a great relationship - the episodes where his mother died, and where his father died, just incredibly moving - any time he has British guests on, or even better, Scottish guests, though any episode with Eddie Izzard is a gem.

Personally, I think he's the best and most genuine chat show host out there. David Letterman, for example, always gets on my nerves. I find his laughter can be SO fucking insincere, and when he doesn't know a thing about the guest, or their show, he's terrible at even feigning an interest. Craig never gives me that impression.
-
That's the beautiful Paula Van Oppen. She was also one of the zombie bikini girls in the "Monster Mash" opening of the Halloween episode.
-
I am grinning like a kid on Christmas day. Happy, happy!
-
I too wasn't certain if Ferguson was just doing a bit or actually had had to cancel it do to music rights.
-
CBS has the easiest decision ever. Just move Craig Ferguson up one hour. No drama necessary. I don't think Letterman should retire completely though. He would be great with a weekly prime-time Ed Sullivan-type show (he's got the theater for it)
-
Ferguson is the best talk show host today.
-
Loved it!
-
...people have attempted to mix EVERY version of the theme together into one song.
Some mixes work better than others, but they're all interesting in their own ways.
It's a tricky thing to do, since some versions are in a different key or a different tempo. Some are longer than others. Some have the extra "middle eight". Etc.
I don't think anybody's really been able to nail it, but they keep trying.
Someday, maybe there will be a definitive remix.
-
It literally sent shivers down my legs.
I'm not kidding...
-
She's so cute
-
Nuff said
-
Go to You Tube and watch him interview Lauren Graham.
-
Ferguson is the best late-night guy on tv, bar none. This was silliness that's right up his alley, and the fact that he dedicated this much to The Doctor makes him The Man.
-
He is just that awesome. Just when I think he couldn't get any better. Intellect and romance over brute force and cynicism.
-
he joked on the show like 4 times that this might just happen to get accidentally leaked and that would be a shame. bbc probably okayed it though, bts, just not for on air.
-
over brute force and cynicism. Now THERE'S a t-shirt I want.
-
I do not mean that in a Platonic sense.
-
Jesus Christ that made me cringe with embarrassment.
-
Thanks for the tip.
-
she's dropped some muscle mass in her arms and legs
-
It's fucking weak.
-
I guess we can pencil you in on the side of 'brute force and cynicism', then? :)
-
HILARIOUS!
-
HILARIOUS!
-
sorry but its true
-
sorry buts its true! ONeillSG1 you must agree with me here
-
On last nights show, which featured Kristin Bell, and was really really good, he had a Tardis on the desk. At the opening of his segment after the monologue, he picked it up and started playing with it, humming the Dr. Who theme. Then said "Craig, what are you doing?" and then said "Oh, the ones who know, know..." That's as clear an admission as we're going to get folks.
-
Don't know how much of a dent Orbital made over there, but if you liked that cover of Dr Who then can I recommend you get hold of the albums "Insides" and "Orbital 2". IMHO the Hartnoll brothers are the leaders in the field of electronic music you can both listen and dance to. Impact (The Earth Is Burning) is simply epic.
-
but didn't see them at the CBS.com store. Get on it CBS.
Kristen Bell is always a great guest, but last night's was probably her best appearance. I loved the cold open with the two of them just goofing around for a couple of minutes, and later her coming in riding Secretariat.
-
awesome. awesome. awesome.
-
...and then the utterly boring Matt Smith emerges. No wonder they cut it. Now imagine if Tennant or Eccleston had been there - now *that* would have been great.
