so i dont feel bad that ive been listening to the whole soundtrack for a week now. love it love it. and to those bitching that it have any of wendy carlos' theme in it... then go listen to that soundtrack. it's called progression.

  • Nov. 30, 2010, 10:55 a.m. CST

Even if this movie sucks (which I hope it doesn't)...

by Shut the Fuck up Donny

it will have at least produced--in my mind--a fantastic soundtrack.
Glad to see some others are picking up hints of Moroder. It's amazing how many people have no fucking clue who he is, even though he was pretty much the go-to guy for SO many memorable songs and soundtracks for over twenty years.

    Having heard the entire thing....

    by Jared_Syn_City

I somehow got it through... nefarious means... but I think it is truly awesome. There is one HUGE problem that I have with it, there is NO tribute to Wendy Carlos' music anywhere. Not even a passing tribute to the music of the first film which at this point is legendary. If it only had that type of "Star Trek" Micheal Giacchino touch in there it would have been SO much better.

  • Nov. 30, 2010, 10:57 a.m. CST

    Early reviews say

    by kwisatzhaderach

the film is appalling. Not a surprise really, but still disappointing.

  • Nov. 30, 2010, 10:57 a.m. CST

    Sounds like generic...

    by ufoclub1977

generic stock retro techno/electro music... I hope nobody copies that for other movies! I swear it sounds like the end credit role to any number of early 80's tv show or movies. :( the original soundtrack to Tron sounds more unique and memorable.

  • Nov. 30, 2010, 11:24 a.m. CST

heard the leaked retail OST 3 or 4 days ago and...

    by justmyluck

I like it overall. Problem is, it doesn't have a signature motif except for particular loops. The orchestral side is mature, but doesn't have the color of the original TRON's score (well, its tough to top Wendy Carlos). I think DAFT PUNK did a good job, and its fine mood music, and it should really compliment the movie - at the least raise it up a bar. I'll buy the uncompressed physical disc for sure - it's a keeper.

  • Nov. 30, 2010, 11:35 a.m. CST

The sound track seems to polarise people.

    by ihatetalkbacks

I dont think it will win over people that do not like electronic music. People that are saying that its derivative... others would say reminicent. Dont forget that Tron had a big influence on the 80s and certainly on idents openings and credits - its no surprise thats what it sounds like... I think all credit to Daft Punk for putting so many nods and winks to old stuff but still keeping it all sounding fresh. Its called reflexivity. Wendy Carlos theme was not that ground breaking - she was just using instruments that the prog rockers had been trucking around stadiums for 10 years, I love the original score but some bits are very clunky. There has been a move in some sance music like the deap house and space disco (ie Lindstrom/Trentmoller) to using a lot more real instrumentation but still chopping it up. I thinkthis will push it further in that direction. For all the people that didnt what would they have wnated?

  • Nov. 30, 2010, 11:37 a.m. CST

    Boring, repetitive and generic

    by kafka07

I'm starting to get the impression the movie will be like that too. The beginning of the music sums up the thin plot with Bridges' voice.

  • Nov. 30, 2010, 11:48 a.m. CST

    The soundtrack has been...

    by Blood Simple

leaked for like three weeks. You can download it pretty much anywhere if you know how to search. It's really good too. I don't understand the people that are bitching about it. What is there to bitch about? There are cool, bold themes, with a really nice mixture of orchestral and electronic elements. There's nothing bad about it. People find a way to whine about absolutely everything. I for one think it's childish to take refuge from your monotonous, shitty lives by bitching on a film news site. You don't have to like it, and you can certainly have an opinion, but cheer the fuck up.

you speak true words. There is nothing to really hate here, the soundtrack is incredible and it is a testament to the studios for taking a risk on Daft Punk. It's not as if it's a simple low budget movie. This is a juggernaut for the studios and they're going to reap billions from it in the years to come (providing the movie is actually good that is).
You must agree though, it's fair game to hate Michael Bay!

  • Nov. 30, 2010, 12:44 p.m. CST

Wendy Carlos cut his pepee off, and this is the thanks she gets?

    by ricarleite2

Left out of the score? Blafesmous! Although Wendy Carlos must have died 5 years ago and we don't know about it yet - haven't heard anything from him/her in a long time.

  • Nov. 30, 2010, 12:46 p.m. CST

    I wonder if people

    by Shaner Jedi

were as polarised over Vangelis' score for Blade Runner all those years ago? When they could get their hands on it that is.

  • Nov. 30, 2010, 12:48 p.m. CST

    by Jared_Syn_City

I don't know if I agree with your logic on that. Wendy Carlos' score not as legendary as Star Wars, Indy or many others...but it is a part of TRON. The movie, the video game, the whole "franchise". They are selling this movie on nostalgia, they should have included SOMETHING of a throwback to it.

  • Nov. 30, 2010, 12:52 p.m. CST

Seriously though, Daft Punk is not what it used to be

    by ricarleite2

And Tron Legacy robbed us from two things. Yes, it robbed us from a final, majestic swan song soundtrack from Wendy Carlos, and it robbed us from a regular album by Daft Punk that was supposed to be released in 2009 and was scrapped in favor of this half-assed soundtrack. Daft Punk hasn't composed anything good since 2001, and it shows no sign to have improved. Composing for an specific soundtrack can be confining for some artists - Wendy Carlos did some terrific pieces of music for movies, Daft Punk should really have a clean slate canvas to create what they want, without having to worry about the movie content and the music matching it. This was a bullshit move by the movie producers and Daft Punk. The duo is dead - at least we still have Air French band.

  • Nov. 30, 2010, 12:55 p.m. CST

    Re: pushthebuttonmax

    by ricarleite2

I'm sorry, but it is. It is as well known as Tron. It's not as well known as the Imperial March as much as Tron didn't have as huge of an audience as The Empire Strikes Back did.

  • Nov. 30, 2010, 1:01 p.m. CST

    Re: KingOfMilwaukee

    by ricarleite2

The non-electronic part of it is very Hans Zimmer. Maybe he did some uncredited assistance to Daft Punk.

  • Nov. 30, 2010, 1:05 p.m. CST

    maybe im biased

    by KingusKong

I've always been a huge daft punk fan ever since interstellar 555. I love the score. Its not like daft punks music normally, but as a score its choice. Perfect decision. I dare you fools to think of someone better for tron. (Wendy Carlos can suck it as far as I'm concerned )

  • Nov. 30, 2010, 1:15 p.m. CST

    by D o o d

What's wrong with you man. Stop the hating. So there's a good bit in the soundtrack and you just can't believe that it's Daft Punk? Maybe you just don't like Daft Punk, That's absolutely fine, but credit where credit is due. Daft Punk composed the music and if you liked some of it, then great, give em some credit!

    Early reviews? WHERE???

    by Quake II

I'm sick of seeing people post shit about negative reviews of Tron:Legacy when I have in fact SCOURED the internet looking for ANY reviews and found nothing but one and 2 sentence excerpts from a screening they had in LA for the cast, a few critics and the crew. So where are these top secret "reviews" you're reading. Please post a link. And the Daft Punk soundtrack fits the Tron Universe like glove and should be even better in the context of the film. A true classic with hints of Tangerine Dream, Moroder, Vangelis mixed with a classic modern score. I dig it.

Not sure why all the hype?

    by notcher

Now that the actual plot is out, this movie feels like a disappointment already. The leading man is a weeny and the plot seems stupid. "I GOTTA SAVE MY DAD FROM THE EVIL COMPUTER." I hope it's good, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

  • The lead-in from Disc Wars to C.L.U is spectacular. And everything below The Game Has Changes is mind blowing, while the ones above it are also riveting.

    I've Been To Like 6 3D Movies Since . . .

The first trailer for Tron Legacy (real one) came out. I just saw Tangled last week. Not a single one of them had the Tron Legacy trailer attached. Why the heck not? Tangled is a frickin' Disney movie! No Tron Legacy? None with Toy Story 3D. I've been paying the extra for 3D more because I wanted to see the Tron trailer in 3D than Tangled or even Toy Story. Bah!

I'll see the whole thing in 3D on Dec 17th. Stupid Disney. ;)

  • Nov. 30, 2010, 3:41 p.m. CST

    Moonlight Drive

Not gonna happen. The next release of Tron is going to be a Blu-Ray combo pack, and that's not going to happen until just before (or after) Tron Legacy comes out on DVD.

Disney execs did a screening of Tron at Disneyland several months ago (as I understand it) and the tittering and laughing and commentary about the leotard based outfits scared the execs, who decided they didn't want to promote or even release the old Tron and have it dilute the brand of the new Tron, until after Tron Legacy has fully established itself.

  • Nov. 30, 2010, 3:44 p.m. CST

Fortunately, I Already have my Tron DVD

And I ain't gonna sell it. It's great. Of course, I love all the interviews and featurettes, etc. And the commentary. It's a great DVD.

That would make sense, but I have a feeling that Disney is holding of a rerelease of "Tron" in order not to scare away the potential audience for the new film. I suspect to see a blu-ray/DVD release around the same time as "Tron Legacy" hits video.

ihatetalkbackssays: "Wendy Carlos theme was not that ground breaking - she was just using instruments that the prog rockers had been trucking around stadiums for 10 years". Learn your pop music history, asshole. Rockers were just trucking around instruments that Wendy's playing revolutionized a years earlier. Ever hear of 1968's "Switched on Bach"? She was the Godfather/mother of Moog synthesizer playing when it was just a clunky box with patch cords, looking like a mad science project. Music on all levels has never been the same since. Learn a little history before making yourself sound like a prick.

    by LaserPants

It's not blowing my mind, but I like it. I just don't understand why nearly EVERY soundtrack has to have several themes that sound like they were lifted from THE DARK KNIGHT. I wish there was more electro stomp and synth on this and less Hans Zimmer riffs.

  • Dec. 1, 2010, 7:26 a.m. CST

    Anyone remember StreetHawk?

    by BobLoblaw75

There are many parts in this soundtrack that remind me of that shows theme.

  • Dec. 1, 2010, 8:01 a.m. CST

    by ihatetalkbacks

Yep; and that is a lot earlier than the Tron sound track. She did a lot of good stuff and she combined classical music with modern instruments, but she did that before the Tron sound track. The clockwork Orange did the same and that was before the Tron Sound track. Carlos was a moderniser and ground breaking but not all her music. People are fawning over it like it is a classic and ground breaking, where as I just think it is a very good sound track.

  • Dec. 1, 2010, 8:54 a.m. CST

For those who have heard it...

    by Phimseto

...are there any cues from the original Tron? Because if there aren't, that's a huge mark against both the score and the film. The music of Tron is as important as any of its characters and visuals.

  • Dec. 1, 2010, 9:48 a.m. CST

Phimseto I think in spirit it does

    by Spacezilla

I like how much of the music in the 1st Tron, had videogame-ish music. A good couple Tracks on Tron 2 have very 80's style videogame sounds and music. There is even 8 bit sounds weaving in and out of the music at times. I think the spirit of the score is actually very much Tron. I think Daft Punk actually kind of nailed it. But, impossible this is without actually watching the movie and hearing how well it actually complements what we will be seeing. But shit we all know that. It just sounds like some of the critics who are bashing it, are really being disingenuous because they have seen the movie yet.

  • Dec. 1, 2010, 9:49 a.m. CST

Haven't seen the movie yet, I mean.

    by Spacezilla

  • ...I just think that not incorporating Wendy Carlos into the effort or any of the first film's cues are inexcusable and poor creative choices.
