TRON-itize your Favorite Vintage Film Moment to win a seat at BUTT-NUMB-A-THON 12!!!

Hey folks, Harry here... I don't know if you're excited about TRON LEGACY quite like me. I'm a hardcore fan. Had ALL the toys as a kid, and thought way hard and way strong about the concept of TRON, the implications of a Buddhist style digital belief system that's existence could change everything we understand about reality at a fairly intense level. Eastern belief systems believe in affecting objects, that everything you drink from, everything you touch, you affect for all time. The notion of creator rights, whether it be how you raise your kids, how you live your life, and what happens to your creative endeavors - and how there's a part of the creator in those things. Thus... Whedon is in this new BUFFY - and there's nothing that the folks messing with it can do to separate Whedon from the Buffyverse... It is mainlined. They'll try change it, but the reality is... We'll always see not only what Whedon created when we see that film, but the new input of the new creators - and we'll either reject or accept that. I'm not sure why I'm going into my weird TRON religious beliefs - but the film is out there now. It's is barreling towards us all and I really wanted to do something creative and fun regarding TRON LEGACY with the site, and I proposed a contest that got shot down, because it couldn't get approved. SO... Out of the sheer fucking love of TRON... I'm doing the contest, because I really want to see the entries, and I think people will have a whole lot of fun doing this - and frankly... it ties into how my brain and hopefully some of your brains work too. What I'm asking is not easy. BUT - for one individual - this could be your chance to go to BUTT-NUMB-A-THON: THE DIRTY DOZENTH. Take your favorite film moment & TRONITIZE it. It can be long enough for a single line of dialogue or moment of action. But with a little dedicated ROTO work and maybe layering a bit of DAFT PUNKs score... You could be sitting for what I feel is probably the strongest vintage programmed BNAT I've done. I'm giddy about it. I was trying to get killer cool TRON Merch for the contest, but when I couldn't - I thought - what's the most valuable thing I can give away right now - and well... A seat for BNAT this coming December 11-12th - Noon to Noon at the Alamo Drafthouse South in Austin, Tx. Seems right. Now, because talent needs a challenge, the deadline for submission is this Saturday the 27th at Midnight. Now, I know there's some of you awesome talented geeks out there, without plans for the Holiday - and you're thinking... I could totally do this. Well do it. Drop me an email at Hk at AintItCool.Com - with the Subject line: You Speak Treason. Fluently. Exactly like that. Then a link to your YouTube or other Video Sharing, but embeddable content. I will post several of my faves, but in the tradition of HIGHLANDER, there can be only one. NOW - if you can't make it to BNAT, but you still want to compete, include your mailing address, and I'll make sure I have 1 BNAT GOODIE BAG filled with the amazing Goodies from BNAT.

The original "Tron" 35mm has played BNAT before,

    by The Reluctant Austinite

so unless there's some secret special edition with extra scenes that were deleted that is currently in the pipeline for Blu-ray, I doubt "Tron" will play BNAT this year. I don't think any film has ever played BNAT twice. As for "Tron: Legacy," I might be crazy but I doubt that plays BNAT either. Why? Well, my reasoning is that it opens only a week or so later so Harry will have likely already seen 2 or 3 times by then, and since he's been so involved in the promotion of the film, I'd expect a HUGE announcement any day now about an exclusive AICN/Alamo/Austin "Tron: Legacy" Tron premiere screening with all the stars and director, special Alamo Tron-burgers, etc. I'll just say "I told ya so" now.

You know the scene in "Abbott and Costello

If I were a digital editing wizard I'd have Lugosi throw his cape out, start to transform, but instead grab a handlebar and transform into Gothy looking Tron cycle. If someone wants to steal this idea and guarantee a seat at BNAT 12, be my guest. Just say a prayer for the Reluctant Austinite.

    by Rustle

I could Photoshop the shit out of some old movie images, but video is a whole nother ballgame. For the hi-end graphics guy you could do full on CGI, but 3 days isn't going to cut it. I'd suggest grabbing a sound clip from your favorite flick and making a quick Flash cartoon. Or filming toys held by hand, and then using aftereffects to paint in some cool glow fx. All more work than I could manage over thanksgiving. I'll be curious to see what kind of submissions Harry gets.

    by The Reluctant Austinite

I'm just guessing, but my guesses are educated by some degree of experience. I love trying to crawl into Harry's programming head; a dangerous place to explore to be sure. My guesses are as follows: Big closing film will be "True Grit." They'll likely see "The Green Hornet" as Seth Rogen was a past BNAT guest and Alamo friend. I expect a screening of "Don't Be Afriad of the Dark" around midnight. It's produced by Guillermo del Toro. I'm gussing that one of the films Harry is sweating bullets over getting is the mysterious, Joss Whedon penned "Cabin in the Woods." I bet he's also trying to get Johnny Depp's "Rum Diary," which has been delayed long enough that it was in my BNAT predictions for BNAT 11! As far as vintage films go, I only have one guess. Since Harry is in full on "Tron" mode, but won't actually be showing "Tron" (?) and he needs to progeam at least one vintage musical, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see "Xanadu" in the lineup. That is all for now.

Phantom of The Paradise would be the better choice. Or Alice in Wonderland: An X Rated Musical Fantasy. Has Bnat ever played a X rated film? There is both an R and X rated cut of the film. If X is too out there- R is an option.

    "ALL" the Tron toys

    by IndyCollector

Fatty makes it sound like he had some massive toy collection based on Tron. The original Tron toy line consisted of four action figures (Tron, Flynn, Warrior and Sark) and two light cycles (a yellow one and a red one, which WERE ripcord). Hardly anything to brag by saying "I had ALL the Tron toys." He doesn't know what the hell he had.

  • Nov. 24, 2010, 9:45 p.m. CST

You didn't have the Master Control Program playset?

    by The Reluctant Austinite

It was a big, swirling red clear plastic vortex with two faces (one side angry, one side worried) that stopped and turned blue when you threw your Flynn figure into the top.

  • Nov. 24, 2010, 10:11 p.m. CST

The reason it is fuzzy - is I also had all the MICRONAUT stuff, which I thought was an extension of the TRON universe, till I started reading the comics.

I made one of those out of a toilet paper tube & Lincoln Logs. I also tried my hardest to make TRON tanks out of LEGOS.

I had about 10 of the Warriors, just one Sark, but I had a few Flynns, I used Model paint to do em different. Indy, you have to understand... I had over a hundred Stormtroopers, multiples big vehicles, I also had all the Major Matt Mason, Captain Action, Mego and Mego playsets. I had the SPACE 1999 toys, including both rayguns. Same with STAR TREK, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA... Longed for LOGAN'S RUN stuff, seriously. I pretty much had every raygun, spaceship, robot, action figure (all scales), Western toys, Marx Playset, tin windups... My parents were Vintage Collectibles dealers that understood the value of stuff, and how investment vs return was tremendous, but they also believed in letting me play with the toys. Because the value even damaged and out of the box was enough, that - well, why not let the kid enjoy it, they taught me to respect and enjoy my toys. When I sold all of my TRON toys and most of my direct childhood toys to pay for College books and stuff, I hated seeing the things go away. I don't believe I'll ever be able to afford all the toys and items I loved growing up. So now, I pick up an item or two from each thing, as well as picking up my favorite Old time wood, mechanical & battery operated toys & automatons. It's why I'm a fan of so much. When you're raised by Pop Culture Memoribilia Dealers that sold something to every corner of proto-geek culture... and you become a Dealer that sells the toys he played with... Well, you end up with someone like me that collects Animation, Original Art, Weird Oddities, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Horror, Noir, Historical & Culturally diverse memoribilia... Well that's me. The reason it gets difficult to remember it all, is I lived in a Toy Store, my parents were the focal geek presence in my city growing up. Throwing the first film festivals and comic conventions. SO - I've had so many things come and go in my life that I spent a bit of time playing with, before selling years later at an awesome mark up which allowed me to go to college and learn enough to know how to do exactly what I do, which is play with, watch, hear, look at and share with all of you, what makes me giddy, makes me think... COOL.
